      <description><![CDATA[The same storm system that devastated communities in north Minneapolis heavily damaged the popular heron rookery in North Mississippi Regional Park this past weekend. As many as 180 herons were killed and approximately 36 nests destroyed by the storm. National Park Service staff members worked with a recovery team to extract wounded herons from the island and survey damages left by the storm. See links for additional coverage.]]></description>

Because of their potential to disrupt the ecosystems of rivers and lakes, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area is working on a plan to stop them as far down stream as possible.</p>

The commission was established by the 2010 Minnesota legislature and included community representatives, elected officials and representatives from federal, state and local agencies. The Park Service participated in the discussions as a non-voting member. Our comments are included as part of the full report.]]></description>
