Blood is the price of freedom. This is one of the core principles that drives Spartacus: Vengeance, the sequel to Starz's explosive Spartacus: Blood and Sand. We recently had a few words with the lovely Katrina Law, whose character is Mira: a slave, a rebel, and a fighter. Here’s what she had to say!
A lot has happened in the past year and a half since Blood and Sand! Can you tell us about what it's like to jump back into the role of Mira after fighting her way out with the rest of the gladiators?
Katrina Law: Jumping back into the character of Mira was a bit like re-learning to ride a bike. It took a while to remember the accent and her mannerisms and her point of view of the world but it all came back very quickly. This year, you watch Mira go from meek house slave afraid of punishment and death to fierce rebel slave that almost seems to invite death at every turn. She is free and she really, really likes it.
I think she is an interesting one to watch because she isn't flawless. She makes huge mistakes, she stands up for what she thinks is right, she is passionate, and she is loyal almost to a flaw. I also think the most interesting thing to watch is how she starts off desperately trying to prove her worth to Spartacus and ends up proving her worth to herself.
Anyone who has seen Spartacus: Vengeance can see the transformation Mira has gone through since she’s met Spartacus in the previous season. She’s been a slave for her entire life, and now she’s an important part of the rebellion. It's very exciting to see her share of the action when it's time to rumble with the Romans.
At this point in the story, what fuels Mira’s passion? How is Spartacus' own vengeance affecting her feelings towards him?
KL: At the beginning of the rebellion I think Mira was very naive in thinking that if they could all just run away, they could be free and happy and that maybe even she and Spartacus could go off and start a family. She very quickly learns that in order to be free you have to fight for it. She has spent most of this season trying to figure out her relationship with Spartacus and how she can be of use to the rebel slaves. Mira really hit her stride when she was taught to shoot a bow. Her sense of pride in herself and her self worth started to sky rocket. I also think that is when most of her anger and her own issues of vengeance started surfacing. I think Mira has fully come to realize how terrible her life has been under Roman rule and I truly do think that if she could she would kill them all.

We recently got the chance to sit down with the beautiful Katrina Law, one of the stars of hit TV show Spartacus, who answered a few questions about the show, what it was like to bare all on TV, and which superhero she would like to play…
UTF: You play Mira in the show, for our readers who haven’t seen it yet can you give us a quick overview of who she is and the role she plays?
KL: Mira is a former house slave of the house of Batiatus who was key to helping Spartacus start the slave rebellion. In Season 2 of Spartacus: Vengeance, Mira is on the run with Spartacus and the rest of the rebel slaves fighting Romans at every turn and on the hunt for freedom and revenge.
UTF: So far the show’s taken a fresh approach to the Spartacus legend, will we see any nods to some of the past iterations, or will you guys stay on your own, separate path?
KL: I think all of the nods have been made so far and from this point on the writers will probably stay adjacent to history. But, to be honest, I think this question is above my pay scale. You should ask Steven.
UTF: The show has a very stylistic feel to it, is it a challenge acting in front of a green screen?
KL: I didn’t find the green screen to be a challenge but I think a background in theatre helped me out a lot with that. In theatre you are used to having to imagine the fourth wall and embellishing the sparse scenery around into a full world. It did make it a lot of fun to see the final product after all of the post production was added. All of a sudden you realize exactly how massive that fire ball hurtling towards you was.

Katrina Law is an actress, singer, and former Miss Teen New Jersey USA who is best known for her role as Mira on Spartacus: Vengeance, a part which sadly came to a close by the blade of a flying axe in the great Season 2 finale on Friday. We were fortunate to talk with the charming actress just before the finale aired, and she shared some great anecdotes about working with castmates Lucy Lawless, Liam McIntyre, original Spartacus Andy Whitfield, Craig Parker and others. She also owned up to some mischief in extending a Nasir and Agron makeout scene. (And for that we thank her!) Read on for details.
AfterElton: Katrina, thank you so much for taking time to talk with us. I’m curious—how does a nice girl from Jersey end up on the bloodiest, sexiest, most violent—and most awesome—show filmed halfway around the world? How did you get the gig on Spartacus?
Katrina Law: Originally I did a web series called The Resistance. The Resistance was a guerrilla style underground thing we funded with our own money, did our own hair and make-up, and put it on the web. Eventually Starz and Ghost House—which is Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi's company—saw it, picked it up, re-funded it, and then had us re-shoot it. From there, when they were auditioning for the part of Mira, they looked in Australia and New Zealand, and when they couldn't find a girl there, they decided to come to the United States, and one of the producers from The Resistance said, " "Well, if you're looking for a girl, look at this girl 'first, because we really like what she's done on The Resistance." And that's how I got my start on Spartacus.
AE: In the first season of Spartacus, Mira is a house slave in the ludus where Spartacus and the other gladiators train. You've talked elsewhere about the "slave mentality" that Mira had then, and I thought that was very interesting. Can you elaborate on that?
KL: I think one of the hardest things about getting into this role was figuring out what the slave mentality was and believing in it because it is so different from the world that I live in now. Not having a choice of where you can sleep, or what you can eat, what you do, and not having that freedom of choice, knowing that if someone wanted you to stay in the house the entire day, you had to. There was no option for dreams. It was pointless to dream, it was pointless to have hope, even to love who you wanted to unless your dominus or domina gave you permission. I feel like sometimes the viewers have a hard time relating to that, and it took a while for the viewer to adjust to it as well.

As a slave in the House of Batiatus, there is no deciding what you will or will not do. You learn from a very young age and/or at the start of your involuntary servitude that you no longer have free will. You are told what to do and when to do it, and heaven help you if the task at hand is not completed to your master's satisfaction. That is the lot in life facing Mira, a beautiful young slave girl introduced in season one of the hit STARZ cable series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. For actress Katrina Law, taking on the role of Mira was initially very much akin to stepping into another world.
"In Blood and Sand, Mira is a house slave in the House of Batiatus. She was born a slave and has never known what it's like to be free," explains the actress. "Mira has always been told what to do, where to go, what to eat or who to sleep with, so she's never been able to make a choice in her life, Perhaps when she hit her teen years she rebelled a little bit, but I think she learned very quickly that the best way to stay alive and not get beaten, starved or punished was to just do as she was told and as fast as she could.
"So Mira was very much into the slave mentality, and as a modern woman it's difficult for me to understand that. I have freedom of choice. I can choose to do something or not. That's not a luxury Mira had, and as an actor that was the hardest choice for me to think, 'Okay, I have to sleep with this guy because I was told to,' and in Mira's mind she wouldn't even question it. She probably taught herself a long time ago not to think about it. I think there was also the fear of knowing that she might be punished or killed for something as small as not shining a vase bright enough. That was also a bit difficult for me to wrap my head around at first, because I'm not facing imminent life-threatening situations in my every day life."
