<p>I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Araxi&#8217;s <a href="http://www.araxi.com/profile_team.html">Executive Chef James Walt</a>, who also started up Yaletown&#8217;s <a href="http://www.bluewatercafe.net/">Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar</a>.</p>
<blockquote><p>Located in scenic Whistler, BC the show should shine a welcoming spotlight on the region, which is not only co-host to the 2010 Winter Games, but is also becoming a thriving culinary hot spot. </p>
<p>&#8220;Obviously it&#8217;s a ski town but we have a really good food scene here as well,&#8221; noted Walt. &#8220;We have a hundred restaurants and—Araxi in particular—we draw 70% of our produce from the Pemberton Valley, which is just behind us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Walt also noted that Chef Ramsay was &#8220;blown away&#8221; with the diversity of fresh, local ingredients in the area. &#8220;He didn&#8217;t expect we&#8217;d have this kind of product. The oceans are not far away, then we have the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan, and he did not expect what we had in our wines from BC.&#8221; &#8212; <strong>Read more in my weekly <a href="http://ca.eonline.com/uberblog/b133291_hells_kitchen_comes_whistler.html">E!Online article</a></strong></p></blockquote>
<p>As a bonus for Miss604 readers, I also asked Chef Walt what was his <em>favourite</em> dish to prepare. </p>
<p>&#8220;We have an incredible beef that&#8217;s coming from 20 miles away at <a href="http://www.pembertonmeadowsbeef.com/">Pemberton Meadows</a>,&#8221; said Walt. &#8220;I do two preparations, I roast the fillets then I take the blade and I make a braised croquette of beef to go with it &#8211; it&#8217;s a capsule of beautiful warm stew and then this really nicely warm fillet. That&#8217;s probably one of my favourite dishes right now.&#8221; </p>
<p>Looking at Araxi&#8217;s <a href="http://www.araxi.com/menus/main-plates">menu</a> you&#8217;ll find numerous local delights such as Qualicum Beach Scallops, Paradise Valley Pork, and Spinach + Ricotta Gnocchi (with BC Hazelnuts). Watch for the restaurant and the region to be highlighted throughout the season of <em>Hell&#8217;s Kitchen</em> which begins July 21st.</p>

I&#8217;m a golfer as well however I&#8217;ve probably played more <em>mini</em> golf courses across North America than actual courses. From West Edmonton Mall down to <s>Wonderland</s> Castle Fun Park in the Fraser Valley it&#8217;s always a good time with friends.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3702507194/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Paradise Fun Park"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3432/3702507194_624838e5ac.jpg" alt="Paradise Fun Park" width="500" height="374" /></a> </p>
<p>When you&#8217;re in the Parksville area on Vancouver Island the one staple of every trip is a cruise around the 18 holes at <a href="http://www.paradisefunpark.net/">Paradise Fun Park</a>. It&#8217;s been a personal favourite over the last decade and I think my first car still has score cards from Paradise sitting in the glove box (wherever it may be resting now). As it turns out my partner in crime on the <a href="http://miss604.com/tag/girls-getaway">Girls Getaway</a>, the lovely Ms Keira-Anne, also grew up with fond memories of Paradise and even knows the family that runs it all. With all of this in mind when we had some free time, it was a no-brainer to get into the car and head over for a round of putt-putt. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3702506426/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Paradise Fun Park"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2460/3702506426_067680c391.jpg" alt="Paradise Fun Park" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Right on the main highway, adjacent to a campground resort, you&#8217;ll see its towering castle and giant shoe &#8212; you know, where the old woman lives with all her kids (although they actually host birthday parties in there). Paradise offers two separate <a href="http://www.paradisefunpark.net/index.php?p=1_2_Courses">courses</a>, the <em>Turf n&#8217; Surf</em> and <em>Treasure Island</em> as well as bumper boats and a full amusement centre arcade (featuring kid-favourite, <em>Whack-a-Mole</em>).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3702508966/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Paradise Fun Park"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2667/3702508966_12d393990d.jpg" alt="Paradise Fun Park" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>The place was buzzing even at 8:00pm on a Thursday night so be prepared to wait a bit after each hole. We decided to do the <em>Treasure Island</em> course, which turned out to be lucky since Keira scored a hole-in-one right on top of the pirate ship. It&#8217;s also located further away from the main door so it seems to be less crowded then the <em>Turf n Surf</em> course.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3701697043/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Paradise Fun Park"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2564/3701697043_c0f649cdb6.jpg" alt="Paradise Fun Park" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Mini golf can&#8217;t really be compared to a <a href="http://www.miss604.com/2009/07/grotto-spa-at-tigh-na-mara-seaside-spa-resort-girls-island-getaway.html">world-class spa resort</a>, nor acres of <a href="http://www.miss604.com/2009/07/milner-gardens-and-woodland-girls-island-getaway.html">old growth forest</a>, however it is a timeless classic when it comes to good ol&#8217; fun times.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3701702691/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Paradise Fun Park"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2664/3701702691_cd65518521.jpg" alt="Paradise Fun Park" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Side note: There is a new mini golf course in Parksville near Tigh-Na-Mara called <a href="http://www.riptidelagoon.com/">Riptide Lagoon</a>. If you&#8217;ve played <a href="http://www.miss604.com/2006/07/its-all-in-the-hips.html">the course at Cultus Lake</a> it looks like a similar design style.</p>
<p><small>This week will feature a series of posts about our <a href="http://miss604.com/tag/girls-getaway">Girls Island Getaway</a> adventures. My photos will be <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/sets/72157620764759299/">available on Flickr</a> and you can also read Keira&#8217;s posts over on her<a href="http://www.keira-anne.com/"> site</a>.</small></p>

Kim guided Keira and I around the grounds as we continued our Girls Getaway over on Vancouver Island.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699288717/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2640/3699288717_31a442a427.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="500" class="aligncenter"/></a> </p>
<p>The history of the gardens and woodland is extremely fascinating, although experiencing what has being built up over the years with the help of a small army of passionate volunteers is even more astounding.</p>
<p><center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699301099/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2573/3699301099_bc43eebc15.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="240" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699290609/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2474/3699290609_dccea3f6a9.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="240"/></a></center></p>
<p>Ray Milner owned the vacation estate and worked on the garden with his first wife Rita until her passing in 1952. Veronica became Ray&#8217;s wife in 1954 and continued the work on the gardens. A descendant of the Dukes of Marlborough, Veronica Milner was related to Sir Winston Churchill as well as Diana, Princess of Wales. With an artistic eye and some impressive connections (Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip were guests of the estate) she helped transform and preserve the land. In the late 1990s, Veronica wanted to ensure her home would live on as a gardens and woodland so in 1996 it was trusted to Vancouver Island University where it would be maintained in perpetuity &#8220;for education and the community’s benefit in Ray Milner’s memory&#8221;. Veronica herself passed away in 1998.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700100230/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2539/3700100230_18be7c4f57.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>To say the land is beautiful is an understatement. When you first pull into the parking lot off the highway you&#8217;ll see nothing but towering Redwoods, Cedars, and Douglas Firs alongside the interpretive centre. After a self-guided stroll through the forest you&#8217;ll come to the garden entrance. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699288309/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2667/3699288309_5453a5ef77.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>The Milner gardens are not really show gardens as they are to be enjoyed leisurely for their natural wonder. They&#8217;re home to many native Island plants as well as some truly unique flora from around the globe.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700100726/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2614/3700100726_4cbf38b6df.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>

<p>On top of <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/special-events.asp#Christmas">holiday</a> decorations and displays, they also <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/special-events.asp">host</a> gardening workshops for kids, garden clubs, work parties, <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/weddings-and-rentals.asp">private events</a>, and they have <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/tea-and-shops.asp">a store</a> on site (in the old pool house) that sells all sorts of goodies from local artisans. Just a ways away, inside the main house, there is a lovely <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/tea-and-shops.asp">tea room</a> and <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/special-events.asp#art">paintings by local artists</a> adorn almost every wall. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700111718/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2652/3700111718_23e272149a.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Sitting out on the porch in front of the lawn, flanked by Dogwood trees, I peered off into the distance, out over the cliffs, and watched as the white-capped waves approached the shore. I suddenly longed to call this wondrous place home even though it would be an impossibility. I don&#8217;t think it was the lovely scenery, the china tea cups, or the yummy egg salad sandwich on a fresh croissant either (although they were all enjoyable). It was more so that I felt what I can only assume was but an ounce of the pride and love Veronica had for the land &#8211; if even for those few minutes. It&#8217;s something I felt emanating from every employee and volunteer we encountered that day as well. </p>
<p><center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699300757/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2465/3699300757_2491765ab4.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120"/></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700108744/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2471/3700108744_e770c83f01.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120"/></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700106480/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2472/3700106480_9d3a7ea9fa.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120"/></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699297015/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2520/3699297015_cf1b37681a.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120"/></a></center></p>
<p>We were treated to tea and lunch prepared on site by staff and dedicated volunteers and since we had to leave before we could enjoy dessert we were also given some delicious scones (with homemade jam) for the road.</p>
<p><center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699302059/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2457/3699302059_fea635e0e5.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700112704/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3435/3700112704_e27649ed77.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3699303893/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3499/3699303893_9fe7674693.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120"/></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700107856/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2665/3700107856_c515bc372a.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="120"/></a> </center></p>
<p>Coming up in August, Milner will have a <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/special-events.asp#BCDayPicnic">BC Day Picnic</a>, and <em><a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/special-events.asp#jazz">Jazz in the Garden</a></em> on August 16th. They also sell plants from their nursery and will host a <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/special-events.asp#fallplantsale">Fall Plant Sale</a> in late September. Admission is $10 for adults however they offer an <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/membership.asp">annual membership</a> for $25, which is by far the best deal since you&#8217;ll definitely want to check out the estate each season.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3700113436/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2603/3700113436_1ab7fba507.jpg" alt="Milner Gardens &#038; Woodland" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>I know I&#8217;ve been saying this in every post from our <a href="http://miss604.com/tag/girls-getaway">Girls Getaway</a> so far but <a href="http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/index.asp">Milner</a> is definitely a must-see destination on Vancouver Island.</p>
<p><small>This week will feature a series of posts about our <a href="http://miss604.com/tag/girls-getaway">Girls Island Getaway</a> adventures. It&#8217;s fortunate that we did since it gave us time to explore <a href="http://www.cheeseworks.ca/">Little Qualicum Cheeseworks</a> and sample some tasty Morningstar Creek Wines.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3698238152/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2499/3698238152_54ccc81af8.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Located in Parksville, BC the farm has been around for over a century however it wasn&#8217;t until artisan cheesemakers Clarke and Nancy Gourlay moved to Morningstar in 2004 (after making cheese since 2001) that it became <em>Little Qualicum</em>. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3697428769/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2540/3697428769_6da545362e.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Little Qualicum Cheeseworks is also home to a slice of local history, featuring Lowry&#8217;s cabin at its entrance. This 120-year old homestead was the home of pioneer and blacksmith, Jim Lowry and is also featured on their cheese labels.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3697421139/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2524/3697421139_6e4c1f6cf1.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>More and more people want to &#8220;see where their food comes from,&#8221; said winemaker Phil Charlebois as he led us on an impromptu tour of the Morningstar Farm. It&#8217;s a saying I first heard while doing the <a href="http://www.miss604.com/tag/circle-farm-tour">Circle Farm Tour</a> in Harrison &#038; Agassiz and something that is truly helping locals and visitors alike experience delicious farm fresh offerings.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3698231982/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2579/3698231982_0b3d85d099.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="373" /></a> </p>
<p>Throughout the farm they have also created a fun experience for visitors, where you can peer in on the cheesemaking room, grab an Island Farms ice cream, giggle at their <em>punny</em> signage, visit with goats, or take a 30 minute trail walk around the property to truly soak in the area&#8217;s beauty. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3697422613/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2596/3697422613_7b19592c15.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3697423965/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2648/3697423965_3fc61d5731.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3698234970/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2509/3698234970_6352b19bb9.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3697425345/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3471/3697425345_2066397a24.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>We ran into some piglets in the barns as well but it&#8217;s best not to get too attached since Little Qualicum also sells bacon and pork products in their on-site store. However, being <a href="http://www.spca.bc.ca/farm/littlequalicum.asp">SPCA Certified</a>, at least they&#8217;ll have a fine life in the shadowy valley of Mt Arrowsmith before making it to your plate. The farm also has <a href="http://www.conservancy.bc.ca/content.asp?sectionack=agricultureandconservation">Environmental Partner Certification</a>, produces <a href="http://www.dairygoodness.ca/en/consumers/organization/programs/canadian-quality-milk/programme-lait-canadien-de-qualite.htm">Canadian Quality Milk</a>, and offers <a href="http://www.cattlemen.bc.ca/vbp_default.htm">Verified Beef</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3697427163/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3498/3697427163_9664be70a4.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="373" /></a> </p>
<p>After our walk around the grounds (you can also pick up a handy self-guided tour map) we went into the shop to sample some cheese and do some wine tastings. There are cheese curds, feta, spiced creations, and fromage frais &#8211; perfect for spreading on a toasty bagel. If you shop at <em>Capers</em> or <em>Whole Foods</em> you may have been lucky enough to pick up some Artisan or Brie varieties from Little Qualicum Cheeseworks. These award-winning selections come directly from this working dairy farm that milks 50 cows, when they&#8217;re not out in the pasture. Almost 50% of the cheese produced by Little Qualicum is Brie, since it&#8217;s by far their best-seller.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3698239756/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3482/3698239756_89e63dff5f.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>We had some berry wine samples from Morningstar Creek Winery and I walked away with a bottle of their gooseberry wine (which was not too tart and not to sweet). </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3698240160/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3622/3698240160_2012752e24.jpg" alt="Little Qualicum Cheeseworks / Morningstar Creek Winery" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Morningstar Farm is located off Lowry Rd next to a truffle farm, which makes me wonder if they would benefit from creating an <em>Oceanside Circle Farm Tour</em> in the area. Being such a gem, I&#8217;m sure many wish they could keep the delicious offerings of <a href="http://www.cheeseworks.ca/">Little Qualicum</a> as their little secret, but something this good just absolutely deserves to be in the limelight.</p>
<p><small>This week will feature a series of posts about our <a href="http://miss604.com/tag/girls-getaway">Girls Island Getaway</a> adventures. <p>The Tigh-Na-Mara Resort features seaside <a href="http://www.tigh-na-mara.com/rooms/accommodations.htm">condos for rent, log cabin cottages, and bungalows</a> near <a href="http://www.tigh-na-mara.com/grottospa.htm">the Grotto Spa</a>. Our room was in the Ballenas condo facing the water and I must say, our photos don&#8217;t do this breathtaking view justice.</p>

<p>After checking in we hit <a href="http://www.grottospa.com/">the Grotto</a> for a soak in their 2500 mineral pool, which is fed by cascading waterfalls. The entire spa area is a &#8220;robe and sandal&#8221; zone, so you can wander from the pool to the treatment rooms on the second floor, and the <a href="http://www.grottospa.com/cuisine.php">Treetop Tapas &#038; Grill</a> restaurant in comfort.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3696665268/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Grotta Spa @ Tigh-Na-Mara Resort"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3508/3696665268_6bdb409377.jpg" alt="Grotta Spa @ Tigh-Na-Mara Resort" width="500" height="373" /></a> </p>

<p>Once we explored (and took advantage of) the mineral pool, we were invited up to the third floor to enjoy the Treetop&#8217;s <em>endless tapas</em> feature. Since Keira is a vegetarian I was able to enjoy a few more dishes however I was also very <em>very</em> full by the time the last course arrived.</p>

<p>From floor to ceiling the Grotto Spa offers a relaxed environment with soothing music, a relaxation lounge, plenty of refreshments (such as tea, water, and fruit) and all the amenities a girl could ask for in the dressing rooms.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3695855571/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Grotta Spa @ Tigh-Na-Mara Resort"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3633/3695855571_e72ea926a5.jpg" alt="Grotta Spa @ Tigh-Na-Mara Resort" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>We returned the next day for another soak in the mineral pool followed by the <a href="http://www.grottospa.com/body.php">Pacific Body Balancing Treatment</a>. This included a sea salt scrub, a thermal clay wrap, a hydrating facial, and finally a body butter massage. To say I felt calm and relaxed afterward would be an understatement. The staff at the spa were all very friendly, helpful, and made sure we had the very best time.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to returning some day, either on another <em>Girls Getaway</em> or with John &#8212; as long as we can land us one of the spa bungalows preferably with those copper soaker tubs I heard about.</p>

<p>Nestled between towering firs and limbering arbutus trees on the shores of the Pacific ocean, the <a href="http://www.grottospa.com/">Grotto</a> at <a href="http://www.tigh-na-mara.com/">Tigh-Na-Mara</a> is the ultimate West Coast spa experience. </p>

<p><a href="http://bcbikerace.com">BC Bike Race</a> wrapped up at Whistler’s Creekside on Saturday. The seven-day staged mountain bike race is billed as the epic single-track adventure of a lifetime. It brought together pro racers, riders of all ages and skill levels -including the weekend warriors, from countries across the Globe. </p>
<p>The journey began with registration for <em>Day 0</em> in the West End at the <a href="http://www.coasthotels.com">Coast Plaza Hotel and Suites</a> and a mandatory racer’s briefing, Here, BC Bike Race President and Founder, Dean Payne thanked the Coast Plaza for allowing BC Bike Race riders to “sleep” with their bicycles. An exception made for the BC Bike Race of the hotel’s strict “No Bikes in Rooms” policy. </p>
<p>Laughter erupted again soon after when Payne fondly referred to Vancouver’s North Shore Mayor as the “Mountain Bike Mayor.” A first for the <a href="http://www.nvchamber.ca/">North Shore</a>, BC Bike Race emphasized their appreciation to the North Shore community for allowing the BC Bike Race to camp on the North Shore with the erection of the first ever “tent city” in Lynn Park. </p>
<p>Original plans for the race start were at the Coast Plaza, with a scenic crossing of the Lions Gate Bridge to the North Shore. That vision was put on hold until possibly 2010. Riders were instead loaded onto shuttle buses to the North Shore for the start of Day 0. </p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janevictoriaking/3672314810/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2552/3672314810_85ef5a57b2.jpg?v=0" class="caption"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janevictoriaking/3672314810/">Jane Victoria King</a> on Flickr</div>
<p>The BC Bike Race, now in its third year showcases British Columbia’s diverse communities and forests and includes four <a href="http://www.bcferries.com/">BC Ferries</a>’ crossings. While the North Shore of Vancouver plays host to Day One, Day Two includes a race start at the Departure Bay Ferry terminal in Nanaimo with a finish in <a href="http://www.visitparksvillequalicumbeach.com/">Parksville</a>, where base camp and tent city is set up seaside. On this day, the wind challenged the great blow-up BC Bike Race finish shoot sending one crew member ten feet in the air in an attempt to hold things down! </p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janevictoriaking/3672327320/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2416/3672327320_09e51ffe85.jpg?v=0" class="caption"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janevictoriaking/3672327320/">Jane Victoria King</a> on Flickr</div>
<p>Day Three saw racers travel through the handcrafted trails of Cumberland near Comox, while Day Four included two scenic ferry rides, first to Powell River from Comox where riders ate up the infamous Sunshine Breakfast on board. Then another short shuttle ride to Saltery Bay, and the last ferry ride of the day to Earls Cove for the start of Day Four. Here, founding sponsor of the BC Bike Race, <a href="http://www.harbour-air.com">Harbour Air Seaplanes</a> saved the day by flying in a handful of racers who missed the ferry rides due to shuttle bus logistics. </p>
<p>The diverse Sunshine Coast played host for two days with the race ending on Day Four in <a href="http://www.district.sechelt.bc.ca/">Sechelt</a> and on Day Five at the Langdale ferry terminal. Another ferry crossing after that from Langdale to Horseshoe Bay and Day Six included yet another challenging day of mounting biking in <a href="http://www.squamish.ca/">Squamish</a> and finally Day Seven, a short day of pure single-track in Whistler to finish things up, beginning and ending at Whistler’s Creekside in front of Dusty’s. </p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janevictoriaking/3694363371/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3597/3694363371_0fd6028566.jpg?v=0" class="caption"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janevictoriaking/3694363371/">Jane Victoria King</a> on Flickr</div>
<p>Anyone can train up for the BC Bike Race. A training schedule posted to the BC Bike Race web site tallies in some weeks leading up to the race, 18-20 hours in the saddle. Although a commitment of time and energy, the race can be done in teams of two or more, with this year allowing for the first time ever a solo rider category. </p>
<p>Many of the riders commented on the diversity of the trails and on the scenery of British Columbia as the “Most beautiful place in the world.” </p>
<p>One BC Bike Race crew member announced at the finish line when the last finisher had crossed, “Now we’re sending you back to the easy life.” </p>
<p>An accomplishment for many, one solo female rider said the seven days of the BC Bike Race, “Made me a better rider.”</p>

<p>Wrapping up the awards ceremonies, BC Bike Race MC and Finish Line Host, Drew Bragg announced probably what many of the riders thought. “The guys from Johannesburg, South Africa have never seen single track like this before, they’ll want to grab some of it and put it in their luggage and take it home with them.” </p>
<p>What the BC Bike Race truly did was take almost 400 riders to places that many had never been before, both in scenery and in spirit. </p>
<p>But like North Shore’s, Andreas Hestler, Director of Marketing for BC Bike Race said, “You’ve got to nurse your bike and nurse your butt along the way!” </p>
<p>Registration is already open with a limited time reduced fare for 2010, visit the <a href="http://www.bcbikerace.com">BC Bike Race</a> site for details.</p>

Our time was action-packed from the minute I arrived at the Departure Bay ferry terminal and we headed up Island toward Nanoose for our afternoon kayaking trip.</p>

<p>I first learned to canoe and kayak in summer camp, over 15 years ago, so my recent refresher over in <a href="http://www.miss604.com/2009/06/deep-cove-kayaking.html">Deep Cove</a> came in handy when we faced strong wings and boat-rocking swells. </p>
<p>In Nanoose we met up with Jan Kretz of <a href="http://adventuress.ca">Adventuress</a> who runs a business offering wilderness adventures for women. Jan arrived full of energy and seemed encouraged by the fact that we didn&#8217;t shy away from the less-than-smooth conditions out on the water. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3693436570/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Kayaking"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2623/3693436570_11acc4b002.jpg" alt="Kayaking" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3692632605/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Kayaking"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2670/3692632605_ea53c9e495.jpg" alt="Kayaking" width="500" height="373" /></a> </p>
<p>After helping us load into our boats, she armed us with valuable information and safety tips, and then we were off to explore Craig Bay &#8211; just around the corner. Steering in through the choppy ups and downs of the ocean I knew my muscles would hurt for days after. </p>
<p>Jan pointed out the snow-capped mountain ranges, the names of Islands, and led us into the Bay as we drifted in calmer waters, trailing a family of geese that was also out for a little cruise.</p>
<p>Sometimes I think I haven&#8217;t found peace with the Pacific since I&#8217;m always hesitant to swim amongst its creatures, white caps and sea kelp however I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;d ever miss the opportunity to head out for a paddle. There&#8217;s just something about being out on the water that is empowering and at the same time brings peace. I can look back on land at all of the houses I wish I could buy, the mountains I could aim to hike, and the forests I&#8217;d love to explore, but at the same time sitting in that boat and experiencing the open water is amazing in its own right. My muscles did end up hurting for days after, and I blistered the inside of my thumb with the paddle, but it was definitely worth it. </p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/keiramellis/3688762061/"><img src=http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2623/3688762061_40268ef992.jpg?v=0" class="caption"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/keiramellis/3688762061/">Keira</a> on Flickr</div>
<p>One thing I noticed recently about kayaking tours is that the people who run them are truly passionate about what they do &#8211; and Jan was absolutely no exception. With <em>Adventuress</em> she offers anything from 2-hour <a href="http://www.adventuress.ca/kayak_tours.htm">tours</a> like we experienced to overnight escapes with either camping or cushy B&#038;B accommodations (which seems like the ideal plan for the next <em>Girls Island Getaway</em>).</p>
<p>Jan also teaches <a href="http://www.adventuress.ca/lessons.htm">lessons</a> and does themed <a href="http://www.adventuress.ca/trip_dates.htm">outings year-round</a>. These special tours include, the Sea Lion Paddle, the Full Moon Paddle, the Sunset Paddle, trips over to Mistaken or Newcastle Island, and coming up this month, a Gulf Islands Escape.</p>
<p>You can <a href="http://www.adventuress.ca/contact_us.htm">contact</a> Jan directly to make a <a href="http://www.adventuress.ca/reservations.htm">reservation</a> or to set up your next multi-day trip.</p>
<p><small>This week will feature a series of posts about our <a href="http://miss604.com/tag/girls-getaway">Girls Island Getaway</a> adventures. My photos will be <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/sets/72157620764759299/">available on Flickr</a> and you can also read Keira&#8217;s posts over on her<a href="http://www.keira-anne.com/2009/07/05/girls-getaway-adventuress-kayaking/"> site</a>.</small></p>

<p>I first heard Bif Naked back in 1995 when I caught <em>Daddy&#8217;s Getting Married</em> on CFOX and I was an instant fan. Over the years she&#8217;s become the queen of Canadian rock, proving time and time again that our country can produce strong, talented, a**-kicking female talent. She also write poetry (has two spoken word albums) and has done some acting.</p>
<p>We heard tracks from her latest, <em>The Promise</em>, as well as catchy hits such as <em>Moment of Weakness</em>, <em>Lucky</em>, and even a cover of Metallica&#8217;s <em>Nothing Else Matters</em>. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3681155478/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2624/3681155478_9fea481c00.jpg?v=0" class="aligncenter"></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3680339597/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2500/3680339597_75645c7308.jpg?v=0" class="aligncenter"></a></p>
<p>She drove the fans so crazy that an encore was inevitable so when she came back on stage she lit it up with <em>Spaceman</em>.</p>
<p>Last year Bif was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been in a constant battle ever-since. She&#8217;s pretty amazing as her show was as energetic as any other and she&#8217;s also just returned from a cross-country tour. How she finds the time and energy I&#8217;ll never know but the audience at Canada Day truly appreciated seeing her and watching her perform.</p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/audihertz/3681146792/"><img class="caption"src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2638/3681146792_a4a1d23572.jpg?v=0"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/audihertz/3681146792/">John Bollwitt</a> on Flickr</div>
<p>Bif also keeps a blog and is active on Twitter @<a href="http://twitter.com/bifnaked">BifNaked</a>.</p>

With so many streets, parks, and monuments dedicated to those who helped shape our region I decided to look a bit further into Burnaby&#8217;s past to see what made him rise above the rest.</p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/penmachine/2432162371/in/set-72157604661696982/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3024/2432162371_b975f60943.jpg?v=0" class="caption"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/penmachine/2432162371/in/set-72157604661696982/">Derek K Miller</a> on Flickr</div>
<p>Robert Burnaby was from Woodthorpe, Leicestershire, England and arrived in BC in the 1850s to survey New Westminster, upon the request of Col. Richard Moody (who also made him his secretary). </p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Richard has got Mr. Burnaby now as his &#8220;Private Secretary&#8221; which will I trust be a great comfort to him, as he had no help before, and the letters of all kinds were innumerable.&#8221; &#8212; 3rd March, 1859, From the Letters of Mary S. Moody [<a href="http://www.royalengineers.ca/BurnabyR.html">source</a>]</p></blockquote>
<p>He was a businessman, dealing with affairs in Victoria as well as exploring areas in the Lower Mainland, in particular the region around Burnaby Lake in 1859. In 1892 the municipality of Burnaby received its charter of incorporation, and was named in his honor by Moody. According to <a href="http://www.city.burnaby.bc.ca/visitors/about/hstryh.html">the City&#8217;s website</a>, &#8220;he has given his name to a city, a park, a <a href="http://www.penmachine.com/2008/04/burnaby-birds-beavers-bogs-and-boats">lake</a>, a hill, a Vancouver street, a mountain range in McKenzie Sound, an island and a narrows in the Queen Charlotte Islands.&#8221; Burnaby also spent time serving in the BC Legislature in Victoria.</p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/themarina/3640007827/in/set-72157619864718721/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3374/3640007827_8e465fa8e6.jpg?v=0" class="caption"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/themarina/3640007827/in/set-72157619864718721/">Marina</a> on Flickr</div>
<p>You can explore the various landmarks, including the city, or even <a href="http://www.burnaby.ca/cityhall/departments/departments_parks/Parks/Parks_and_Trails/prksrc_prksan/District_Parks/prksrc_prksan_rbrtbr.html">Robert Burnaby Park</a> to enjoy his legacy. The park features a baseball diamond, dog off leash area, casual picnic area, playground, outdoor swimming pool, tennis, walking and hiking trails, disc golf course. Also, according to entertainment podcaster <a href="http://rowthree.com">Marina Antunes</a>, the park was also the home to the &#8220;Cabin in the Woods&#8221; and various sets for <em>New Moon</em> and <em>Battlestar Gallactica</em>.</p>
<p>For more information about local namesakes, I would recommend checking out the book <em>Namely Vancouver: A Hidden History of Vancouver Place Names</em> or browsing the <a href="http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/whoswho_A.htm">Hall of Fame</a> on the Vancouver History website.</p>

We walk through forest trails that open up into sprawling sandy shores and rest for hours in the open air. Snacks include fresh fruit and water, while we either read books or use the headphone splitter to enjoy the latest sonic mixes John has on his iPod (from podcasts to our favourite albums). </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3672114952/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Beach Times"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2580/3672114952_196b70f5c0.jpg" alt="Beach Times" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>The other day we had our first official beach day of the year and we decided to shake things up a bit and head out to <strong>Cates Park</strong> in North Vancouver. We had access to a car, which made our decision to venture outside of downtown an easy one, but you can also get there by transit. This recreational area along the Burrard Inlet, across from Burnaby and just near Deep Cove, is truly a gem.</p>
<p><a href="http://maps.google.ca/?ie=UTF8&#038;ll=49.30968,-122.94096&#038;spn=0.087184,0.215263&#038;z=13"><img src="http://www.miss604.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/cates.png" alt="cates" title="cates" width="500" height="377" class="aligncenter"/></a></p>
<p>At first glance it&#8217;s a boat launch, grassy picnic area, concession, sandy beach (with small rocks), and trail network. However there&#8217;s also a lot of history at this particular location including signs of the <a href="http://www.findfamilyfun.com/cates.htm">old Dollarton Mill burner</a> (read a little bit about &#8216;<a href="http://www.miss604.com/2008/09/vancouver-history-the-name-game.html">Cates</a>&#8216; in one of my previous local history posts).</p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.deepcovebc.com/parkscatespark.html"><img src="http://www.deepcovebc.com/unjimages/imagesParksDeepCove/catespark/catesparktotem.jpg" class="caption"></a><br />Source: <a href="http://www.deepcovebc.com/parkscatespark.html">DeepCoveBC.com</a></div>
<p>First Nations tradition and culture is also highlighted through totem poles and a war canoe on site at Cates, whose ancestral name is Whey-Ah-Whichen (which means &#8216;faces the wind&#8217;). &#8220;Whey-Ah-Whichen is the Tsleil-Waututh name for this place which defines Indian Arm from Burrard Inlet. The Squamish know it as Atsenách. The point was named after Lieutenant Rocke of HMS Satellite, which patrolled the Northwest Coast in the 1850s.&#8221; [<a href="http://www.deepcovebc.com/parkscatespark.html">source</a>]</p>
<p>The beach seems quiet and calm even when the park is packed with groups and families having cookouts and picnics. Also, it&#8217;s a great shoreline for beachcombing and exploring tidal pools. One of my beach pass times is rock balancing (on a very small scale mind you) but it was also the perfect place for that.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3672115716/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="My humble rock balancing feat"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3022/3672115716_b162204582.jpg" alt="My humble rock balancing feat" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>There are kayak rentals, playgrounds, a <a href="http://604foodtography.wordpress.com/2009/06/06/wallys-burgers-at-cates-parkwhey-ah-wichen/">Wally&#8217;s Burger stand</a>, and I would highly recommend exploring the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Lowry">Malcolm Lowry</a> Walk. The park also has a dog off-leash area and in the summer it&#8217;s the home of a concert series, running every Saturday night this year from July 11 &#8211; August 22.</p>
<div class="caption-centered"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miketodd07/107913333/"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/45/107913333_e675059d6d.jpg?v=0" class="caption"></a><br />Photo credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miketodd07/107913333/">Mike Todd</a> on Flickr</div>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/miss604/3672118024/" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="View from Cates"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3633/3672118024_0d4567d60c.jpg" alt="View from Cates" width="500" height="375" /></a> </p>
<p>Exploring more of the beaches the Metro Vancouver area has to offer made me wonder &#8212; which is <em>your</em> favourite <a href="http://www.miss604.com/2008/05/metro-vancouvers-ocean-beaches.html">beach in the region</a>? <p>I chose the photo for this post (by <a href="http://shithawksonparade.com/">Pat</a>) because it reminds me of the &#8220;<a href="http://www.miss604.com/2008/07/playland-in-the-rain.html">Blogger Day at Playland</a>&#8221; I arranged last year. It was <em>such</em> a good time &#8212; we couldn&#8217;t stop smiling and laughing. <a href="http://www.pne.ca/playland/index.htm">Playland</a> is now open daily until late September. Pat also recently took photos at the <a href="http://hastingspark.ca/">Hastings Park Conservancy</a> which includes the Opera Walk. I&#8217;ve listed this in my &#8220;<a href="http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/things_to_do/10_hidden_gems_in_vancouver">10 Hidden Gems</a>&#8221; post for Tourism Vancouver and I think it&#8217;s definitely worth exploring.</p>
