I would imagine many who work in or around downtown Vancouver are also going through this phase of planning their commute (if they haven’t taken two weeks holiday during this time).

Here are some transportation options you’ll need to consider over the next two months, according to TravelSmart2010.ca.

Taking Transit in the Lower Mainland
The West Coast Express, Canada Line and SkyTrain lines will have expanded hours of service. You will still be able to take transit around the Lower Mainland (it’s encouraged as opposed to driving) so you’ll want to explore all options with regards to times of service, routes and fares.

SkyTrain: A train every 108 seconds during peak periods every day, including weekends, from 5:00am to 2:15am the following morning during all 17 days of the Olympics.

Canada Line: Operating from YVR, Richmond and Downtown 4:50am to 1:15am during the Olympics.

SeaBus: All three vessels will be running from 6:00am until 2:15am.

There will be a third Seabus in operation and the free streetcar line from Olympic Village Canada Line Station to Granville Island will be available as well.

Transit buses will have extended day and night service although with road closures and pedestrian-only lanes, here are a few routes that will change to skirt them around the security zones:

#5 Robson / Downtown, #6 Davie / Downtown, N17, #17 UBC / Oak / Downtown, #15 Cambie / Downtown, #50 False Creek, C21 community shuttle and C23 community shuttle.

The North Shore buses that go along Georgia that will be re-routed include: 240, 241, 242, 246, 247, and 257 Horseshoe Bay Express.

<img src="http://www.miss604.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/detours-westend-1024x962.jpg" alt="" title="detours-westend" width="500 class="caption">
Click to enlarge / View all maps here.

Fare wise, souvenir 6-week monthly passes are available from Translink and will be valid February 8th until March 21st, 2010. If you’re in Whistler, Squamish or Pemberton you can also buy a souvenir monthly fare pass from BC Transit. If you have an Olympic event ticket, it serves as a day-pass for transit services such as buses, SkyTrains etc.

Taking Buses to and from Olympic Events
If you have tickets to an Olympic event and would like to book your transportation you will need to get your tickets ASAP. You can do so online and take note of the shuttle bus departure hub locations:

For Cypress Mountain: Capilano University, Simon Fraser University and Lonsdale Quay.

For Whistler Olympic Park: BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) and Lonsdale Quay.

For Whistler Sliding Centre: BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) and Lonsdale Quay.

For Whistler Creekside: Langara College and Lonsdale Quay.

Tickets to Cypress are $12 while Whistler is $25 and you may only pay by Visa online. NOTE: Prices will increase to $25 for Cypress and $50 for Whistler if purchased on or after January 11, 2010. All tickets are valid for a round-trip.

It is highly recommended that you take public transit to get to these departure hubs. If you would like to “park & ride” there is no cost but you’ll require a parking pass to leave your car there. This pass can be obtained online when you book you bus tickets. You can contact the Olympic Bus Network by phone Monday through Saturday from Canada and the USA for more information.

You can read about one blogger’s experience in purchasing Olympic Bus Network tickets here.

In General
If you need to come into work downtown (and cannot telecommute) see if you can carpool or take transit. Should you choose to carpool, make sure you can get to a parking space that is not in a locked down security zone or closed street / pedestrian corridor.

Transit alerts will be available online and if you’re traveling up to the Squamish / Whistler region remember they are serviced by BC Transit.

For more information refer to TravelSmart2010.ca as they have plenty of resources available. There is also a guide to getting around on the City of Vancouver website.

With all that being said, it’s best to leave the car at home and plan your transportation options well in advance. My best bet right now it to rely on my own two feet to get me around.

The Whistler Film Festival (WFF) seems to always fall at a strange time of year for me. Last year, it preceded a trip to see my ailing 95-year-old grandmother in Seoul (I had to race down the mountain like a madwoman to not miss my flight) and this year, the WFF preceded final exams. So, my apologies to Miss604 and to her beloved readers for not getting this post up sooner (though I’m happy to say, I think I aced my Korean Modern Fiction exam).

But timing of the festival (right before holiday season), and the compactness of the festival (both terrain-wise and time-wise) is exactly what makes WFF so unique, so intense, and my favourite festivals on the circuit.

The WFF always takes place early December over a four-day-weekend in the heart of Whistler Village, right below Whistler Mountain. It’s always been an amazing festival—incredibly tranquil and celebratory, kicking off the Christmas party season. But admittedly, at moments, one couldn’t really tell that a festival was even going on. Attendees often faded into the alpine landscape or got lost among the local skiers and snowboarders as they made their way down and up the mountain again.

But this year was different. Maybe it was because the village was gearing up for the Olympics (through fences, I could see the Olympic/Paralympic park nearing completion), because there was way more anticipation in the air on that mountain this year. Though there were about the same number of films (80 films, including 36 feature and mid-length films and 44 shorts) and about the same number events at The Forum at the Whistler Film Festival (an industry conference that runs in conjunction with the festival) as in previous years, attendance for the ninth annual festival almost doubled.

I don’t know exactly what it was, but there was a spark and intensity at the festival, one that was manifested by line-ups outside Village Cinemas, when Ivan Reitman (WFF held a special tribute to famed director), Kristen Kreuk, and Jennifer Bachiwal (she’s a personal hero of mine since high school) can be spotted in the same room, or when a swam of beautiful actresses leaving the annual Brightlight Pictures party at Araxi, intimidated and outnumbered snowboarders heckling them.

There was so much going on at any given moment, from the Forum, to the screenings, to the parties, that is was almost heartbreaking to choose one thing over another. But one this was for sure: it was all amazing. And the WFF is officially my favourite festival on the circuit. And it’ll continue to grow while maintaining that close intimate feeling one gets from being huddled together on a mountain.

Some highlights:

The key-note address of the Whistler Film Festival Forum by Christian Gaines (a former programmer of at Sundance and Director of various film festivals including Los Angele and Hawaii, currently at festival director at IMDb’s festival and networking community Withoutabox.com) about the history, evolution, and future.

The opening night film, Trotsky; a smart and charming film about a 17-year-old boy who thinks he is the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky. My chat with director Jacob Tierney afterwards he explained that he wanted to always make a progressive high school movie, a movie he would have loved to see in high school, that he would always” sacrifice a laugh for the truth”, and that to him, “the extraordinary is what’s interesting”.

Ali Liebert, Kristine Cofsky, and Michelle Kim

Brunch with actresses Ali Leibert (“Year of the Carnivore”-which screened at WFF) and Kristine Cofsky, as well as Pacific Artists agent Melanie Turner. We were a gaggle of giggling girls and I enjoyed our little shop around in Whistler village.

The Uptown Gift Lounge (a new addition to WFF). I really liked the Brazilian-inspired underwear I got from VIVVOS.

The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) party at Bearfoot Bistro where I saw women with painted-on clothes and challenged a guy to an Oyster-eating contest (I didn’t realize how sexy that was until someone told me later). I crashed too soon upstairs in my room because my friend who stayed said that those to closed the party got to go down to the wine cellar, where there was a DJ spinning and champagne was served until the wee hours of the morning.

The Whistler Film Festival takes place in Whistler, British Columbia annually in early December. You can follow them on Twitter (@@WhisFilmFest) for updates year-round.

Each year the City of Vancouver along with volunteers from the Lions Clubs in Vancouver provide Christmas tree chipping and composting services by donation (either cash or non-perishable food items for local charities).

Here’s where you can find the stations this weekend:

Kerrisdale Community Ice Rink Parking Lot (East Boulevard north of 41st Avenue)

Kits Beach Parking Lot (Cornwall and Arbutus Street)

Sunset Beach Upper Parking Lot (Pacific Boulevard and Broughton Street)

Trout Lake Community Centre (Victoria Drive and 15th Avenue)

UBC Botanical Gardens is also hosting a tree chipping event from now until January 10th. They’re open daily from 9:30am until 4:30pm in the parking lot at 6804 South West Marine Dr. Suggested donations of $5 will support the development of a heritage food garden for SPG Childcare / Quilchena Elementary.

Over on the North Shore there are a few locations as well:

Lynn Valley United Church (Mtn Hwy & LV Road) benefiting the 30th Seymour Scouts (Lynn Valley) – January 9th & 10th from 10:00am – 4:00pm

Ambleside Park, West Vancouver benefiting the Ambleside Tiddley Cove Lions Society – January 10th from 10:00am until 3:00pm.

Karen Magnussen Rec Centre or Edgemont Village Chevron Station benefiting the North Vancouver Host Lions – January 10th from 9:30am until 3:30pm.

If you can make it out to one of these event this weekend, that’s probably your best bet for safe removal. If not, the City suggests you can also take your tree to the transfer station or the landfill directly.

Last year I featured hotels, apartments, wintery scenes and even dogs in the city. I’ve come to the conclusion that the most effective “Then and Now” features buildings and streets, which are the easiest to research. Thanks as always to the Vancouver Archives and Google Street Views, the following is a collection of commercial buildings, then and now.

It’s filled with photographs along with Chuck’s commentary and would be great for a visitor, resident, history buff, or just to have around as a coffee table book.

We came up with a contest for Miss604.com readers and I timed it to coincide with my history piece about bobsleigh in St Moritz, Switzerland that was published this morning.

Birks is the official jewelery supplier for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, and OMEGA is the official Timekeeper for the Winter Olympics. Both have organized the Olympic-themed display featuring a sleek red fibreglass bobsleigh setup in the middle of the Birks flagship store on Granville and Hastings.

Visit this display and answer a skill-testing question on Miss604.com and you could win a Birks Collection for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Nature 8-Charm Bracelet, in Sterling Silver valued at $350.

Stop by on your lunch break, in the morning, or after work. The store itself is an amazing piece of Vancouver history and I’m sure the display looks great. Just make sure to stop by here after your visit to Birks and enter the contest using the form above: Is it a two or four man bobsleigh on display?

Entries must be received by 12:00pm January 14th, 2010 in order to qualify.
Birth of the Winter Sport
2010 marks the 125th anniversary of the Cresta Run in St Moritz, Switerzland. Back in 1885 tobogganing made its way there from Britain and people began to flock to the friendly winter destination to participate in the sport.

The Cresta Run itself is a 3,978 foot long natural ice run down the side of a mountain for tobogganing (or skeleton as many know it from the Olympics). Whether it was the head-first skeleton or the luge race, both evolved from “steerable sledding” that was invented by snowbird British guests at the St Moritz hotel, Kulm in 1870. Over on the Cresta run you can reach speeds of up to 140km/h on the track that has been carved over the last century. Originally designed to entertain and carry adventurously wealthy tourists, it soon became quite the competitive sport.

The Cresta Run is owned and operated by the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club (SMTC), also referred to as the Cresta Club which has been all-male since founded by the British Military in 1885. Women have never been allowed to sled down the Cresta Run and from what our guide told us, the excuses were many. Anything from it was too dangerous to telling them that laying on their front to head down the runs would give them breast cancer.

Rumour has it though that some ladies have managed to make it down over the years by cross-dressing, but that’s simply local folklore at this point.

The Bob Run
You take two toboggans, tie them together, add a steering mechanism and grab a couple of your friends and you have a bobsleigh. Since toboganning became such a hit, another run was built in St Moritz — the Bob Run.

Now according to most definitions, the sport is called bobsledding because you watch the riders’ heads bob as they go down the run. Alternatively, our St Moritz guide told us that a man named Robert (Bob) started up the Bob Run (his own run) across from the Cresta Run as a haven for those who wanted to tie their sleds together. Hence that new sled was called the bobsleigh, named after the run and thus named after a man called Bob.

I haven’t found anything online to back this up so I’m not sure if our guide was just having a bit of fun with us or if I might be documenting this for the first time. Regardless of its etymology, the world’s first bobsleigh club was formed in 1897 at the Bob Run in St Moritz.

With longer sleds emerging with spots for two or four men the Bob Run became the longest, fastest and only natural bobsleigh run in the world. Natural means that each and every winter the build up that non-refrigerated, u-shaped run down the side of the hill using tools, manpower, and only the snow and ice that surrounds them.

From where we stood after our walk over from the village, the Bob Run is basically “across the street” and up a hill from the Cresta Run. It’s not only the home of bobsleigh but also the site of the St Moritz Winter Olympics ceremonies in 1928 and 1948. Bobsleigh appeared in the first Winter Games in Chamonix in 1924.

The men who build the Bob Run each year aren’t even bobsledders themselves, however we were told they are very proud to be a part of such a momentous annual event, which is so important to the world of winter sports. When we visited in November 2009 they were merely weeks away from starting the year’s build, which would take about 3 weeks in total to complete.

The photo above shows the official starting place of the Bob Run so as you can see, they really do build it all from scratch with fresh snow and ice each winter. The photo below is the opposite view of that starting point.

Little-known bobsleigh fact, the brake man only does his job at the very end of the course — at no other time are the brakes used on the bobsleigh except to actually stop it. At the end of the season (usually around March) the run is so cutup from sleigh after sleigh that before they tear down the track some folks are actually allowed to ice skate down it. Sort of like the Red Bull Crashed Ice event each year in Quebec City.

Traditions and Oddities
The St. Moritz Bobsleigh Club owns and maintains the prestigious track and the President, Gunter Sachs, runs the lodge and the highly exclusive Dracula Club within. We took a tour but since it was so prestigious (and had a bit of a strange theme) I will respect the secrecy and privacy of the club and its member list. Let’s just say that strings of garlic hung from the bar, there was a bat skeleton on the wall, and apparently a coffin in the basement that – rumour has it – comes out on occasion for a few inebriated members to take a spin down the rushing Bob Run.

Unsure of the validity of said rumour, Sachs does operate a nighttime competition called Dracula’s Ghost Riders for which the grand prize at the end is shaped like a coffin.

The Dracula Club, known as quite the party destination has a restaurant and pub along with the members-only area. It’s open to new membership if you care to join, but even according to a Dracula Club’s Facebook page, you would have to abide by and swear to follow Dracula rules.

Bobsleigh Today
All history and folklore aside, at over 5,500 ft long the Bob Run finishes up in the town of Celerina and is also home to the Bobsleigh World Cup. The Bob Run is open for all nations and women who may also train on this amazing course.

The Swiss have built up a dynasty of champion bobsleigh traditions (literally, from the ground up) so it’s truly no wonder the Swiss Olympic Bobsleigh Teams excels so greatly in international competition.

The 125th anniversary of the original Cresta Run, which started it all, will take place in St Moritz February 5th until the 14th, 2010.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the run in Whistler treats teams this winter and how our Canadian team will compete during the Games which kick off February 12, 2010 in Vancouver. Just a few weeks ago our women’s team made bobsleigh history by placing first and second in a world cup event in Germany so it should be a great event on all fronts.

Copyright © 2010 Miss604. Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2010/01/disclosure-statements-for-bloggers.html.

Unless properly disclosed, motivation for reviews on blogs has sometimes been a mystery to the unfamiliar reader. Was the author paid? Did they simply feel moved to write based on their enjoyment a restaurant or product? Thanks to the CMP.ly service, bloggers and Tweeters now have an instant and easy-to-share way to add a disclosure statement to a post or tweet.

“CMP.ly provides bloggers and advertisers with a simple disclosure solution. We have created a set of easily identifiable disclosures and codes that can be used to identify any material connections in your blog posts, tweets or other communications. These disclosures give you flexible options and provide you with both short codes and full text disclosures that can be included in your posts.”

I know that often on my site I include information and events simply because a) I think they’re worth sharing b) my audience would appreciate it c) it’s Vancouver-centric. However, I am often accused of being paid off for sharing specific information, which is never the case unless I have specifically used the words “sponsored” or “commissioned”.

In the United States, “Mommy Bloggers” (or mothers that earn a living blogging from home) have been accused of being “corporate shills” as they write about products they have been given for review. Same goes for technology bloggers or any independent online writer who is sent product. This exchange is very prevalent in the blogging realm but as I see most often, the company supplying the product does so without expecting a blog post in exchange. Many are usually told, “if you’d like to blog about it after, that would be great but you’re under no obligation.”

Who we are in our blogs are real, but our blogs are just one part of us, sometimes amplified. Every page on your blog, right down to the most seemingly boring and mundane and possibly lawsuit-averting – like, ahem, a disclosure policy – is an opportunity to develop your character and tell your story. [Problogger]

Despite a disclosure statement being recommended, in the fall of 2009 the FTC in the United States amplified things… just a tad. They announced that it would be fining bloggers up to $11,000 for failing to disclose endorsement payments for review or sponsored blog posts.

The growing trend is fueling legal and social debate over how bloggers disclose what goodies they get. New guidelines released last month by the Federal Trade Commission say bloggers must divulge financial or product compensation they get in exchange for writing about a company’s products. The regulations go into effect Dec. 1 [2009] [NewsTribune]

Even though the FTC does not reach up into Canada, all bloggers should still consider having a disclosure statement. You can use the CMP.ly service or simply have a page on your site dedicated to disclosure.

Disclosure types:

CMP.ly/0 – No connection, unpaid, my own opinions.

CMP.ly/1 – Based upon a review copy.

CMP.ly/2 – Based upon a sample.

CMP.ly/3 – Paid post.

CMP.ly/4 – Employee / shareholder / business relationship.

CMP.ly/5 – Affiliate marketing links.

CMP.ly/6 – Custom disclosure.

CMP.ly also allows you to make disclosure statements based on specific campaigns.

Photo credit: Joe Gratz on Flickr

Going forward on this site, I’ll be using a CMP.ly link at the end of posts that mention restaurants or products as well as on my sidebars in the “sponsored” or “partnership” sections. This way readers can simply click the link and it will take you to a page that states the disclosure for the post (ie. “To read the disclosure on this post visit http://cmp.ly/0). Mind you, not everyone even cares about this stuff but for those who do (and eventually for the government) it’s here to stay.

I love supporting local businesses and offering contests, but I also love being transparent for my audience — providing truthful and responsible content. Hopefully this will avoid any confusion in the future and allow everyone to benefit from the sharing of information (and some pretty cool prizes to boot).

For the last seven years we’ve been talking about “2010″ an how it will change the City. Now that it’s here (and the Olympic Winter Games are mere weeks away) it’s a mystery as to what will truly happen in 2010 after Vancouver 2010.

However, what 2010 really means is that the “2000s” are over (even though that’s not as fancy a name for a decade as the “80s” or “90s”). Here’s what happened in my life over the last ten years…

2000
I became an auntie to the beautiful Alexis and at 20 years old, I started working for a streaming audio company – my first professional gig in the internet technology realm.

2001
I came into work at 6:00am and watched the big screens in the boardroom in shock as the two towers fell.

I worked hard, got a promotion and began building up a company that I had no idea would lead me across the continent and into a decade-long career in new media. The company also took a big trip to Vegas to celebrate the growth.

2002
I became an auntie again to the charmingly sweet Ethan. I also moved to Boston with my company, shutting down the Vancouver office and starting up production with a new team in Watertown, MA.

I went to New York for a weekend and never knew I’d be back seven years later… again for only a weekend. I only hopped over to London during American Thanksgiving to visit my friend Michelle who was living there and working for the BBC.

2003
My company became the world’s largest webcaster of financial audio. I listened to Canucks games online from my house (and then my loft) in Cambridge, MA and went to plenty of Bruins games. I also started using the handle “Miss604″ as my email alias. Went to Vegas again with Jenny who also visited me a few times in Boston and took my mom to Salem when she visited me too.

2004
Home from Boston, I became an auntie again as we welcomed baby Cameron on Independence Day. I bought a fancy new car and took a two week road trip to Napa Valley. I also visited my friend Anne in Toronto and started a little thing called a “blog” in the fall.

2005

I met a boy but he lived in Iowa. After several visits back and forth the pain of being apart was too much to bear so he joined me up in Vancouver. I then took him to his first NHL game.

2006

That boy from Iowa became my husband. A few weeks before we were married we went to our first Podcaster Meetup where we met folks like Tod Maffin, David Drucker, James Sherrett and Monique Trottier. A few months after that we attended BarCamp where I did my first liveblogging. We also started something called The Crazy Canucks podcast with some of our friends. I began writing Year in Review blog posts.

2007

We met Duane Storey at the Northern Voice conference and I began hanging out with a wonderful girl named Keira-Anne. Sean and Booth were welcomed into our family and thus I became an auntie again. I also started blogging for a cause (raising $800 for local charities that year) and I wrote a Year in Review blog post.

2008

I became an auntie for the fourth time to “Tornado” Jakob, started my own company, and ended the year in Iowa with family. I was blogging so much that I wrote two Year in Review posts (1, 2).

2009
I lost my baby Kitty cat (who died at age 19), I helped my mom start a blog for her Sherlock Holmes club, I traveled from the Swiss Alps to the tropics and already covered most of the year in this Year in Review blog post.

I don’t think I’ll be becoming an auntie again in this coming decade but I’m looking forward to seeing Alexis, Ethan, Cameron, Jakob and Booth grow into fine young adults. I’ll raise a glass to my sister tonight as I’m sure this coming decade will be just as busy for her as the last.

I am thankful to be able to start a new decade of my life with John and even though I’m missing my family back home, they’ll be getting a phone call from me at 10:00pm (since it will be midnight here). I’ll also see them soon enough as we have some cake for a certain annual celebration in my honor that is rounding the corner.

We’re thrilled to be here in Iowa once again to start the year off with loved ones and as the margaritas start flowing, here’s hoping that in 2010 we’ll be able to see them more often — before the year expires once again.

These are just a small sampling of events that made my 2009 memorable. I am truly thankful for the trips I’ve been able to take, the friends that I have made this year, and the difference Miss604.com has been able to make thanks to my dedicated readers.

I’m proud to say that events I organized in 2009 raised over $10,000 for local causes, I gave away about 60 contest prizes (about $5,000 in swag), I built websites for amazing clients including the Coca-Cola Olympic Torch Run Newsroom, and I wrote a book that will be on store shelves in about two weeks.

I feel as though I’ve worked the hardest in my life but what made it all worthwhile was being able to play hard as well. Here’s to a fantastic 2010 — it’ll be a big one of Olympic proportions for sure and I look forward to sharing it with you. Cheers!

I had the chance to speak to Recreation Programmer Ron Suzuki about Strathcona’s many programs and how they have built up such a strong bond in what is even referred to on Wikipedia as “Canada’s poorest postal code”. Working with the odds against them, they have cultivated an amazing support system in the Downtown Eastside, with the community centre at the heart of it all.

They have fitness facilities, basketball camps, floor hockey and piano recitals like most other community centres although they also host several specific programs to not only entertain, but help the entire neighbourhood, especially the children, learn invaluable life skills for themselves and their families.

The Downtown Eastside neighbourhood in which the Strathcona Community Centre lies consists of a “working poor” population where 78% are ESL (English as a Second Language) and 60% are single parents. This means they work to make ends meet and as such are just above certain income levels in order to get social assistance (although many would refuse this aid in any case). This also means that parents are working so much and so hard that they cannot be there to greet their children when they get home from school, and this is where the community centre comes in.

Fed by three public schools in the area the community centre is a place for children to hang out but also continue their real-world education. “The public looks to the Community Centre as the ’safe place’ in the community,” said Suzuki who introduced me to several of their programs:

Food Security
This isn’t so much as securing food for the children, it’s about giving them access to healthy food. Funding from Canada Place helps sustain the majority of this program, which began in 1999 (serving 75 children everyday). Connected to an inner-city school of 500 students, Ron said that as of last spring they have served over 250 breakfasts for children.

Once 3:00pm comes around, Ron says that “as many as 200-250 children are engaged in after-school activities that run until about 6:00pm.” During this after-school time, children tend to be hungry again so Canada Place’s funding also helps about 175 children with the “Healthy Snack” program.

Ron said it’s truly a community effort as the youth (usually grade 6 or older) learn how to wash and prepare the snacks to serve to the younger ones.

Holiday Safe Place
“The sad thing about children living in poverty or about children living in the inner-city is that the most vulnerable times of their lives are during Christmas and Spring Break,” said Ron. Right now is a crucial time for these children as parents continue to work yet they do not have classes to attend at school (or the school’s lunch program).

Teachers have referred about 120 students to the community centre who will receive a hot breakfast and lunch throughout the holidays. They also have about 35-40 youth volunteers who are helping out. Ron says this is such an important time of year as “hunger does not take a school break.”

Healthy Food Choices
The goal of the food programs isn’t just to make sure mouths are fed but it’s also to ensure that the children are eating right. It’s all about giving kids access to healthy food choices, not just “snacks” in general.

“We take parents, and we engage children with the parents about where to find good food, how to prepare good food and how to serve good food.” The community centre runs a “Cooking Fun for Families” program, also supported by Canada Place funding, that educates parents and children alike on where to shop for good ingredients, finding recipes, and looking at healthy and accessible/affordable options to eat right.

Ron drives home the point that “Food Security” also means access to good food and knowing where to find it. “It’s a lot of education,” he says, but it’s a journey well worth taking.

Seniors Program
Programs at the Strathcona Community Centre are for all ages and their highest population in the Downtown Eastside actually consists of seniors. “Many are shut ins because they are afraid to get out of their homes,” says Ron. This isn’t because they cannot leave, it’s because it is a scary neighbourhood for them. Every Wednesday the community centre has a luncheon for the seniors and Thursdays are luncheons for senior stroke victims.

Showing the true community spirit, parents from the “Cooking Fun for Families” assist in preparing the meals for these events.

Youth Culinary Arts Program
Youth from about grade 6 and 7 are shown how to wash, cut, food and make simple meals through the “Youth Culinary Arts Program”. Ron said they also offer the “Youth Culinary Academy” where up to 25 young people from grade 6 to grade 12 get to work with a trained chef who teaches them how to make broth, sauces, and how to prepare nutritious meals. This includes shopping for the ingredients and menu planning. The program started about a year ago and they have also started a catering program where the food served at community centre events is prepared by the Youth Culinary Arts students.

The Heart of the Community
“We’re a little community centre but we do big things,” noted Ron. “None of the programs are advertised in our brochure. These are all programs that came about because of need. We reacted to social programs so these had to (sadly) be created.”

Even though the families live in “one of the scariest communities” in the country, they look out for each other. “You will never meet a more appreciative, kinder, community than the people at Strathcona,” Ron adds, making sure to give credit to the parents that are doing their best.

“These are the best parents in the world,” says Ron. Working 15 hour days 5 or 7 days a week just to make sure your children are clothed and fed is enough of a task but all everyone wants is to have their child grow up safe, strong and healthy. Ron says he would actually challenge other communities to see if they are feeding their children food that is as healthy and nutritious as Strathcona’s.

The Strathcona Community Centre has a great collection of generous sponsors as they need sustainable funds to keep these programs running. I hope others can recognize the value in their initiatives so that they can feed, educate, and help many more children grow.

“We care for one another,” says Ron. “The strength of our community centre is a community and even though we serve so many people and so many families — even though the community doesn’t have a lot of material — what the people in the community have is that sense of community.”

Photo © Pivot Legal Society – 2010 Hope in Shadows calendars available now

The people of the Downtown Eastside live, work, play and do the best to live their lives to the fullest. They are children, parents, and families who are creative, dedicated, and fortunate to have each other through the Strathcona Community Centre. “No one should feel sorry for them,” Ron told me. If anything, it’s a sense of support, camaraderie and community that I think we would all be very proud to be a part of.

If you would like more information about the Strathcona Community Centre or would like to inquire about being a sponsor, you can contact them through their website.

You also still have time to donate to the Food Security program through the Christmas at Canada Place website. By donating through Canada Place before January 10th, 2010 you’ll be entered to win an all-inclusive trip for 2 to Jamaica.

Having a third Seabus means that sailings will run every 10 minutes but after the Olympics either the Burrard Beaver or Burrard Otter will be taken out of service and sold off.

At $3.50 during peak times, my friend Dave notes that the Seabus is the ultimate harbour cruise. Hopefully the new ride (on those silky soft seats) will prove to be a smooth one for commuters and visitors alike.

Life.com – August 1954, Photographer: Ralph Morse

Here are some historic events that took place in the old Empire Stadium, located on Hastings right near Hwy 1 in East Vancouver:

1954 – The Games – The stadium opened for the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, hence its name — Empire Stadium. 24 nations sent 662 competitors to compete in Vancouver for the Games. It was Canada’s largest stadium.

1954 The Miracle Mile – Roger Bannister was the first man to break the “four-minute mile” and his win is immortalized in a statue at the entrance to the PNE on Hastings and Renfrew. John Landy, the man looking over his shoulder in the statue, also ran it in under four minutes but Bannister beat him across the line. The CBC has a great video archive clip of this.

1957 Elvis Presley – A young Red Robinson from CKWX radio was there to emcee Elvis’ show at Empire. Elvis got one song in before the show had to stop because the crowd was too loud and excited, he later returned to the stag to play a few more songs. Robinson said afterward that it was the first time a performer stood in front of a crowd of 26,000 people in a rented stadium. No one had done it before, not even Sinatra. He also commented that as a result of Elvis’ appearance, “Vancouver was firmly established as a major destination for every Rock ‘N Roll act that followed.” [source]

1958 Stadium Ski Jump – A 165-foot high ski jump hill was erected for the three-day Centennial Ski Jump Tournament at Empire Stadium. Though over 20,000 people attended the event, it’s said that 60,000 more watched from outside the fence for free. [source]. Hat tip to Dave Olson for this info as well.

Stadium Ski Jumps

1964 The Beatles – Due to the screams of the wild a fanatic crowd, the Beatles show only lasted about 20 minutes before they had to stop playing – no one could hear them and people were rushing the gates.

The Whitecaps – In 1978 The Whitecaps were drawing crowds of close to 30,000 at Empire Stadium. [source]

Empire Stadium was also the first to have artificial grass in Canada, and towards the end of its run it seated 32,375. It also hosted the Grey Cup seven times between 1958 and 1974.

While BC Place is otherwise engaged in 2010 with the Olympics and major renovations, the BC Lions will play their games at a new structure built on the site of Empire Stadium. Adjacent to the PNE (just East of the Coaster) it’s a great location with a fantastic North Shore view. The Vancouver Whitecaps will also play a few games at Empire once again during their inaugural MLS season in 2011. Here’s what the 27,500-seat temporary stadium will look like:

Via News1130.com

I’m looking forward to its return, in whatever form the incarnation may take. As my husband said last night, imagine a warm summer evening up in the stands with the aromas of the PNE’s candy floss and fresh popcorn wafting over the crowd as you take in a football game with a mountain backdrop. Sounds like a great Vancouver outing to me.

With Christmas around the corner, and theatre tickets being a fabulous gift or stocking stuffer, here’s another roundup of productions this winters.

There are so many productions year-round and moving into 2010, especially with things like the Cultural Olympiad and the PuSh Festival, Vancouver’s arts scene will hopefully illuminate under one big spotlight. There are many more listings and community theatre groups in the City that I have not listed here but please check them out if you can.

Sometimes giving the gift of an experience, such as an evening of theatre on the town with friends or loved ones, can beat out the store-bought tangible gifts any day.
