And once it hits, there will be enough cold weather to go around.

But have you been checking out the progress on the docks????

Check out the webcams! Just do it during the day - I forgot and went to the site at night. Great lights but you can't see much of the progress.
Cause it was the place to be for the 4th of July celebration!

Kayaks, techs and Boston's on fire.

We saw Uncle Sam and the Statue of Liberty float on by. Went sailing on the river, dodging in and out of all those motorboats, kayaks, canoes and other strange floating devices - it was a blast.

What was the weather like? Good wind, sunny skies and then some ominous dark clouds with the sun glinting off the Zakim bridge and buildings in Boston. It's New England weather - there had to be a little drama. However, the storm never materialized, thank goodness.

A sincere THANK YOU to everyone! Matt, with all the staff and volunteers worked hard manning the door, keeping sailors safe and clear of the barge perimeter, and doing everything you didn't notice to make it a fun afternoon/evening for all.

Tom Rose from Testive was there, breathing in the smoke from the grill.

I was in the locker room when I heard the collective "Oooohhhh!" from the crowd on the dock. It wasn't dark yet so I knew I hadn't missed any fireworks - just a great photo opportunity and yes, there was Pat, drenched from the waist down.

Pat, after the mishap

He was moving a tech dinghy, which somehow managed to go one way while Pat went another. But with some quick moves, Pat was able to keep his upper half dry.

There were so many familiar faces on the dock. Ron Filosa sold me his boat so I could get a quick sail in, Peter S. was there to help out, alumni, sailing students, sailors, friends - it was really nice to see everyone.

The blue and red Prudential Center.

Finally the sky got dark and the concert started. There were tons of people on the dock with expensive looking cameras - but you'll have to make do with the few pictures I took with my ancient camera.

Come on down on Wednesday evenings (5:30). It's a three class series with all 3 classes offered every Wed.

The weekend would be better you say? Then sign up for the Sunday All-in-one class. These classes are extremely popular. The instructors fit in as much training and and beginning sailing experience as they can into one long session.

Then what, you ask? There are several options. Try dock hours. During "Dock Hours" our volunteers will be around to help you improve your skills, and if you're ready they'll give the Provisional Rating Test. Check out the calendar to see listings for dock hours, these are added "on the fly" when people have time.

What if you are a new sailor and a) have questions? or b) are looking for someone to sail with? Then try the Learn-to-sail mailing list. We also have some instructional videos on the site you might like to watch.

And now, this summer, there are intermediate tech sailing classes. Every other week on Thursdays, starting June 23. These classes will help you progress beyond the basic skills you learned in the Wednesday and Sunday classes. See the calendar.

What if you're into competition? Well, there's the Intro to Racing on Mondays. This class draws beginning sailors and racers as well as many long-time crews looking to move into the back of the boat.

Looking for more of a challenge? Try the catamaran classes! The catamaran is a fast boat and requires significantly more athletic ability than a dinghy. The boat easily reaches half the wind speed, and it is not unusual to match or even exceed the wind speed. Not only is the boat fast, it is very responsive. A quick turn can easily throw the skipper or crew off the boat or skewer another sailboat.

Or you could be looking to get into a larger boat, such as the Lynx, so you can sail with more friends?
Well, we have Lynx classes too.

Check out the website. We sometimes offer Laser and windsurfing classes too.
So, come on down to the Pavilion and learn more about sailing, it's various forms and get out on the Charles.

<georss:box>42.346646400000004 -71.1577713 42.3986334 -71.061534299999991</georss:box>

Wednesday evenings at the Pavilion

So, we had a great evening, on Wednesday May 25th, check out the class pictures on the site (Gallery), and then last Wednesday? Yes, 75 years of sailing! The pavilion opens on March 29th. So, find your sneakers, round up your sunglasses and dust off that bottle of sunscreen. Then grab a windbreaker and sweatshirt because while the sun is shining - it's always colder on the river in the spring.

What's going on even before we're open? The team is in full swing with practices and regattas.

The Sailing classes will start up in April with the 1st Wednesday sailing class on April 20th at 5:30. The Sunday classes start a bit later in the season, May, when the weekend regattas begin to taper off. Have you ever seen a weekend with a Sunday class AND a regatta in full swing? Organized chaos to say the least, all out there enjoying sailing or learning to.

The Pavilion and the river are our rewards for having survived this snowy winter! There's a lot going on this season so check out the web page or just come on down to hang out.

See you soon.

First Ever Motorized Lynx 16 Catboat Sail

Early Sunday the 19th found me on another pre-workshift sail into the harbor with our July 4th Sailing Pavilion bouncer Andy Carvalho and Linda Greene. Having two lifeguards aboard is great assurance if I fell in!

There's a saying a watched tea pot never boils but it might also extend to the wind. If you go searching for it, it might not be there. This was certainly the case, as the only wind we felt was from the apparent wind generated by our motorised movement. OK there was some, but so little that we would never have gotten past the Coast Guard station on it alone.

Instead, by firing up the 4-stroke, 4 HP engine we went south and then East of Long Island, through the Nubble Channel (still searching for wind). We found much evidence of wind...far away...cruise ships were making unexpected stopovers here to avoid the hurricane just several hundred miles to the east.

Linda Greene surveys the incoming Cruise ship while Andy Carvalho (sits) watch on the port side. (MS 1645 AW)

We did establish that you can do a motor trip on 4HP in four hours barring excessive boatwakes. Yeah, another 2 or 3 HP would've been great...better yet a twin engine mount!

I know I know...we didn't set sail but then again, I am told that these type of boats were primarily engine powered during the non-summer seasons when used as a workboat, so history partially had us covered!

Everyone is happy to return to the Home Waters - heading West on the Charles River. MS 1645 AW

The wind did finally fill in on the inner harbor - just as we were about to enter the Charles River locks to go back home (where there was barely any wind again)... Maybe that was Nature's way of saying, "C'mon again and give it one more shot!"

Harbor Trip: Herding Catboats

The wind was up on the harbor after a flat and calm river. We started off with one reef and the Lynx was loving it. Later the wind dropped a bit and we took the reef out.

It was a short morning trip so we only went out to Castle Island and stopped by to say hi to Matt Wall on our way back. Matt was out on Nevermore working on a repair. There were quite a few people out sailing, tons of kayakers and I'm pretty sure we saw every duck boat while on our way back up the river. So many were out enjoying the river and the day.

JoAnn got some great pictures of planes landing at Logan. with the mast down.

On August 28, we took two Lynxes on a harbor trip to Spectacle Island. It was marked by a lot of equipment failure, but we made it out and back safely despite the problems. It all started when our yoke broke. (The yoke helps hold the gaff to the mast.) We'd just stepped our mast and raised sail. We did a slow, gentle jibe in very light air when a bolt fell out of the yoke! It turned out that the bolts were older copper bolts, and were due to be replaced anyway.

We lowered our sail and started our engine. Since Tom's boat was also out on the harbor, we decided to keep going under power. We had another boat nearby if we had engine trouble, and that way we could help him out if anything happened. It's always nice to have backup! We motored down the Sculpin Ledge channel, around Spectacle Island and back to the docks. While we were waiting for Tom, we hiked up the South Drumlin, and saw his boat sailing towards the docks. They dropped their sail, but then raised it again. We heard on the radio that their engine had died! So we helped them dock their boat and had lunch together on the island to decompress.

After lunch, we decided to tow Tom's boat back. We rigged a towing bridle from side cleat to side cleat, and then tied the painter to the bridle. Someone had to manage the bridle the whole time to stop it from knocking the engine, but it worked pretty well. We made it safely back and certified Simon as a new Lynx harbor skipper!

Scuba Diving Underneath Nevermore

On August 18th, Ted Young and I dove underneath Nevermore and tied on a new centerboard line. We moored the boat by Rainsford Island. When we got there it was slack tide, and the current wasn't bad. But by the time we got suited up and in the water, it was flowing pretty fast with the tide coming in. So we ran lines under the boat to hang onto, and then it was okay. I jumped in without my fins on and put them on in the water, but I don't think I'd do that again with that much current.

We did it in three descents. First I tied a bowline through the padeye on the centerboard. I cable tied it down, and clipped off the ends. Then we surfaced and got the hose that protects the line from chaffing. We descended and put that on the line, and I tied it on with a reef knot. Then we attached the centerboard line to the wire that we threaded down through the mast. We signaled for them to pull the line up by hitting my dive light on the hull three times, but they didn't hear, after two tries. So we ascended, and told them to pull the line up. Then we descended once last time to check it, and everything looked great!
I attended a belated wedding reception yesterday for Miro and Elizabeth Kazakoff. (Miro is an MIT Sloan 2nd year.) Just prior to the event, the three of us took a spin around the Charles River in a luxurious Cape Cod Cat Boat. Of course, we wore life jackets for the majority of the trip, but took a couple of pictures without them for posterity.

The weather was perfect; the breeze was blowing an ideal 8 knots. One thing I learned is that boarding and unboarding (word?) a boat in high heels can be quite a challenge. Congratulations to Elizabeth, who made it look easy.

Gwen and Travis followed us in a chase boat and snapped photos the whole way. I think they came out great. The rest of the album is attached.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sailingblog.mit.edu/2010/08/kazakoffs-get-hitched-and-boat.html' title='The Kazakoffs get hitched!
