Global Search

Previously, mixxt users were able to search terms and keywords in some single modules, like the forum, members or content management. The new global search allows users to expand their search from one module to the entire community. In the search results, choosing “search the whole network” next to the search box leads the user to community-wide results. Users can show or hide the results from the modules ( members, forums, images, wiki, events, blogs, files, videos, content management, polls, groups) by clicking the respective icons:

Search operators:
Some operators are available to improve the results:
mixxt & Community – finds any content containg the term mixxt AND the term Community
mixxt | Community – finds any content which either contains the term mixxt OR the term community or both
mixxt -Community – finds any content containing the term mixxt but NOT the term Community

Wiki Editor

The wiki editor now offers a toolbar with formatting options. This makes the handling of wiki pages much easier for non-techie users and helps them with font sizes, bullet points, headlines, links or anchors.

Shoutbox

In one of our last updates, we have already added an administrators’ shoutbox to post directly into the lifestream. From now on, every administrator may add a shoutbox to the main page which – depending on the privacy settings – allows every member to post and shout some words (400 characters!) right into their community. The shoutbox is ideal for status updates, announcements and tips, to post links or even for short dialogues. Not only every network may now have it’s own shoutbox, but also every group can place it on it’s start page!

Your feedback is highly appreciated, have you already spotted some nice shouts in the wild? Stay tuned via our twitter updates!

According to the announcement in last week’s blogpost, mixxt has added global friendships to it’s communities! All mixxt users may now automatically become friends with all members they added as friends in other networks before. By implementing this feature, the flood of friendship requests and confirmations going along with joining a new network will be reduced to a minimum.

Activating global friendships

We have added a new menu to the mixxt-settings to activate or deactivate “global friendships”. If both users have activated this feature, they will automatically become friends in the networks (only for realname and public nickname networks) they join in the future. Of course, members will always be able to end friendships manually.

Bonus: User A has enabled global friendships and joins a network. User B, an “old” friend of A, already is a member but has not activated global friendships yet. User B then automatically receives a friend request from A, which contains a hint to activate global friendships. This helps us to communicate this new feature more quickly and minimises the amount of friend requests and confirmations for each user very fast.

BarCamp Power-User

As we have already pointed out the pros and cons of global friendships in the latest blogpost: Most of our users and admins hold a membership in only one network which means that this feature appears to be needless or might even irritate them. The desire for global friendships mainly arose from barcampers and webworkers, who actively participate in many of our networks. This feature has been a hot topic in many internal discussions and we finally decided to pay tribute and respect to the whole BarCamp and web2.0 scene by making their wishes come true ;)

Become a mixxt fan

mixxt would like to take this opportunity to ask our users, customers, readers, friends and supporters to become a fan of mixxt. We have set up a Facebook page to collect and organise various information about mixxt and the mixxt team. Do you like mixxt? Then click here and become a fan: mixxt page at Facebook. Thank you very much! Your Feedback is highly appreciated.

Some of our users have been waiting for this announcement for months: We will be adding “global friendships” to your communities! When joining a network, users will automatically become friends with all members they added as friends in other networks before. By implementing this feature, the flood of friendship requests and confirmations going along with joining a new network will be reduced to a minimum.

The desire for these global friendships mainly arose from barcampers and webworkers, who actively participate in many of our networks. But since the majority of our users hold a membership in only one network, we have postponed this topic several times.

BarCamp Power Users

One of our goals is to keep mixxt with it’s multiple features as simple as possible to use, even for non-techie users. On the one hand, both the administrator and the members of a single (non-barcamp) community would most probably not catch the importance of “global friendships”. For them, they appear to be just needless. On the other hand, feedback and wishes from the BarCamp scene are very important to us, we see ourselves and our software as part of this scene and have grown with it. That’s why we were looking for a solution which satisfies our power users, but is not too complex to build or to use.

Our “Global Friendship” Solution

After discussing different scenarios, we have decided to go for a system which we can implement with reasonable effort and that will surely make our barcampers happy:

In the mixxt settings, each user will be able to activate global friendships. If both users have activated this feature, they will automatically become friends in the networks (only for realname and public nickname networks) they join in the future. Of course, members will always be able to end friendships manually.

In addition to that: User A has enabled global friendships and joins a network. User B, an “old” friend of A, already is a member but has not activated global friendships yet. User B then automatically receives a friend request from A, which contains a hint to activate global friendships. This helps us to communicate this new feature more quickly and minimises the amount of friend requests and confirmations for each user very fast.

Fine-tuning and implementation

Our developers are already working on the concept and the implementation and we might even be able to release the feature by the end of next week. We are excited about the reactions from the mixxt community and keep you posted on any news and the release date here and via twitter.

The lifestream on the main page is the eye-catcher of many mixxt communities. It shows teasers of the latest events and recent changes and leads the visitor to the respective entries or member profiles. Until now – depending on the privacy settings of each community – it automatically displayed new content (like images, forum or blog/posts or wiki pages) as well as new members, friendships or member profile updates from a period of 14 days.

Since last week’s update, the new “Lifestream Administration” allows all admins who have created their own community with mixxt for free to determine what content (selected by content modules) and how many entries and/or days should be displayed. The “Lifestream” entry in the community administration leads to the following view:

Shoutbox

In addition to this configuration, we have added a feature which virtually revolutionizes our lifestream: We set up a “Shoutbox” for the administrator, who is now able to post urgent news, comments or instructions straight into the lifestream. This gives the community manager the chance to distribute targeted information to all members in a comfortable but unobtrusive way.

The shoutbox uses a WYSIWYG editor which includes the usual formatting options and even allows adding links, tables and images:

Delete entries

Another highlight: Via the new lifestream admin, individual activities can now be deleted from the lifestream. On one hand, this is useful to clean the lifestream from outdated shoutbox entries, but on the other hand it enables the administrator to influence the design and attractiveness of the main page in a new way.

Enjoy the optimisation of the main page in your community! And as always, the whole mixxt team highly appreciates our customers’ and users’ comments and feedback.

With today’s update to mixxt version “boogie”, we proudly present our new and often longed-for “groups module”. When you create your own community with mixxt, the implementation of this module provides entirely new ways of collaboration and organisation in the individual networks.

A community within your community
Within the privacy and rights management of each community, admins were given the opportunity to decide which users – “simple” members, moderators or administrators – are allowed to view or edit certain content. From now on, mixxt offers a module to create groups within these communities. Imagine many sub-communities within one greater community, where e.g. content and modules are visible and editable by group members only.

Configuration and employment of the groups module
Since configuration and privacy settings are based on the general network administration, mixxt users and community hosts will surely get on well with setting up a group.

Administrators can activate the groups module in the features from the admin panel. A new tab called “groups” appears in the menu bar, and a click on this tab leads you to the start page of this new module.

Create a new group
Find a “new group” button on top of the groups start page, click it and set up your first group on mixxt: First enter a few general settings, choose a logo and a description…

… and then decide about the privacy settings:

With the “group manager” we have introduced a new member role. This manager is comparable to the administrator of a community, but in this case responsible for the respective group.

Groups administration and settings
In the current version of the groups module, we integrated forums and images, other features will follow in the near future. Activation and configuration are also based on the common network features’ settings. This screenshot shows the top part of admin panel of a sample group called “Strategies”:

Search
Another highlight – in addition to all the community features – is the search within this module: You can search within one single group feature, but also extend the search to the entire group. This means, you will not only find forum contributions to one particular keyword, but also images or members (and – coming soon – content from other modules as well).

We are really excited about the first implementations in your communities and are looking forward to our customers’ and users’ feedback. As always, questions are more than welcome: Comments are open :)

Some of you may already have noticed, others may even have given their vote in one of the existing polls: mixxt has added a poll module to their community features. Administrators are now enabled to

ask for their members opinion on a certain topic

let them vote on any proposal

schedule events and find common dates

have topics or “things” being rated and

carry out statistical surveys or explore current trends

The polls can be configured individually, as admins can submit questions, answer types and options as well as the poll’s runtime. Votings can for example be helpful as a mood or opinion poll among the community or for making better decisions regarding current and community issues.

Creating a poll

Polls are generally shown on the community main page. To create an own poll, select the “Main Page” menu from the Admin Panel, choose “Poll” from the additional features and drag it into the desired column. A blank poll box will then appear on the main page and can be edited as follows:

At first, enter title (poll box title), question and (optional) a more detailed description. You can also determine whether the vote should be immediately activated, or will be unlocked at a later stage.

Setting answer options

Now decide whether users may choose multiple answers or only one, and add the answer options via the entry field. The texts may be edited and deleted, and their order can be changed by grabbing them by mouse and pulling them to the right position (drag & drop).

More options

There’s more to it than that! Polls can be specified via:

How (if at all) should the results be displayed?

Is it a vote of unlimited duration, or is there a specific deadline?

Can members change their decision and vote again?

Are comments (pinboard entries) allowed?

Poll box on main page

The poll is presented on the main page and catches the visitors’ attention straight away.

We are glad to finally have embedded this extension last month and have already spotted some nice polls in the mixxt-sphere. What are your ideas for your community’s poll? As always, questions are welcome and we are excited about your feedback!

Invitations

To win new members for a community, the founder – and, depending on privacy settings, other members – may send invitations to the email addresses or mixxt-IDs of the desired persons. Since the latest update, mixxt additionally provides a summary of all previously sent and accepted invitations:

As usual, an export as CSV is offered and on top of that, administrators can resend invitations another time. This feature is very helpful to politely remind potential new members to join the network.

Message Centre

The message centre has also received a small cosmetic treatment: The mailboxes (inbox, sent, drafts) now offer the option to “select all messages” with one click. By means of this mass editing, all selected messages can either be “marked as read”, “marked as unread” or entirely “deleted” at once.

Contact Form

In the footer of every community there is a short reference to their founders, such as “Created by Wile E. on mixxt”. So far, the founder has often only been reachable for members of their own community, but not for any external person. From now on, everybody can reach the founder by just clicking the link and reaching a “mini imprint” which states:

This network was created by using the social network kit “mixxt”. The network host is exclusively responsible for all published content in this network. [...]
mixxt does not accept any liability or guarantee on the correctness, integrity, quality or actuality of the provided information. The Terms of Service of the mixxt GmbH apply for this information.

Find a contact form below this information to send a message to the community’s host. Registered users just need to enter a text, all others also have to provide their name and email address.

In the past, we often received messages which were actually meant to reach the community host. Implementing this form, has especially fastened the request process by leading the messages directly to the responsible persons and avoiding a long way round the mixxt support team.

New Designs

Many of you will already have noticed, but the designs are very fancy and deserve even more attention: In addition to the creative, colourful or themed styles, administrators may now also choose from 8 very simple but elegant designs:

Stay tuned, since we will release some more nice features soon!

This means, every main page now offers more space for the boxes which display the network’s various features.

Three column trinity
We have added the menu “main page” to the network admin:

eine der drei

After choosing this menu, you’ll find die settings for dragging and dropping the available features to their respective destination. It allows you to change the main page’s look according to your wishes. Just play around and give it a try: Do you like the blog module better above the videos in the main column or do you prefer it to be shown on the left beneath the content management? You may always change these settings later on!

“For each active network feature there is a box available which can be shown on the main page. If it is not shown there yet, it is listed under ‘Active features’. Other boxes, which do not depend on any network features, are shown under ‘More features’.”

This new option for configuring your network reduces scrolling down and shows more information at a glance on the main page. Since many users expressed their wish to freely set up the right column, we are again glad to announce to have incorporated our community’s proposals by introducing this new feature

Network details
Network founders may from now on decide whether to show or to hide the network details’ box on the main page. In the main page admin underneath the “more features”, you can find a box called “network features”. Drag & drop it to the left or right column or just entirely exclude it from being displayed on the main page. This setting is especially interesting and important for private networks, where non-members should not be able to see information about the network founder, or the number of members.

Feature Administration
In addition, we have developed a more convenient administration panel for activating and deactivation network features by just one mouse click.

“Which features would you like to activate in your network? Best is to begin with features you already have a precise idea what to use them for, and then add new ones bit by bit.”

Consequently, the features that you activate here will be available for the arrangement on the main page.

RSS lifestream
Some of our users will be very glad to hear this: The public network lifestream (RSS) is no longer password protected! Activity streams from public networks (!) can now be read with the standard feed readers and do not require a password entry any more.

So if you don’t go our for celebrating carnival today (as many Germans do), go ahead and give it a try. Otherwise: Alaaf and Helau from the whole mixxt team :)

Have you already spotted such a widget on external sites? We are looking forward to your reading notes in the comments.

Promote blog posts on main page
But wait, that’s not all: The blog module has also undergone some minor operations. Besides some little changes on the wording, we have expanded the settings for the promotion of blog posts on the main page.

For every single blog post you may here decide whether it should appear on the main page or not. This helps you to generate attention and promote important and interesting blog posts by placing them on a more attractive position.

Have fun with mixxt and keep in mind that we are always glad to hear about your thoughts and wishes towards our social network kit.
