Let’s get something out of the way: MJ2 is a musical group made up of twin sisters, their mother, and her twin. And, yes, there’s a Mollie and Jackie in each set. Confused yet?

Team captain, at least where diabetes is concerned, is 22-year-old Mollie Singer, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4 and became a diabetes advocate practically overnight. By age 5, she and her twin, Jackie, who doesn’t have diabetes, had already raised $2,000 for diabetes research in one summer—on a lemonade stand. That’s small beans compared with what the twins have raised since then: about $750,000.

“The truth is, they felt a calling to do what they were doing, which was to be that active, that out in front of the disease, and to help however they could,” says Jackie Singer, the twins’ mother. As 6-year-olds, they were lobbying senators and Congress members. At 10, the girls founded Diabetic Angels, which has blossomed into an educational resource and community for people with the disease. And as if all of that weren’t enough, the girls, along with their mother and aunt, decided to take on Nashville.

After signing with a record label, the group joined its producer in a hunt for musicians willing to donate their time for charity. The result: “You Can’t Say Love Enough,” an MJ2 song featuring 18 stars, including Dolly Parton. With support from producer Dennis Money, who also has type 1 diabetes, MJ2 is donating the proceeds for diabetes research.

“I was just overwhelmed and humbled that all of these people could come together for one cause,” says Mollie Singer of their debut single. Next up: a television debut. The group’s turning on the camera for an as-yet-unnamed reality TV show. Though the show will focus on the family’s music, it also won’t hide Mollie’s diabetes. If anything, it will prove the importance of a support system Mollie relies on so heavily. “They’re just there for me,” she says, “even if I just need a hug.” —T.N.

The new Miss Rodeo America will be crowned today at the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand. Reigning state rodeo queens have been competing all week in personality, appearance, and horsemanship to become rodeo’s next ambassador. At rehearsals, I caught a performance of “She’s More than Just a Crown,” by MJ2. Mollie and Jackie and Mollie and Jackie, the two sets of twins who make up the group, wrote their new song especially for Miss Rodeo America. Coronation is just ahead of us, so we’ll find out very soon who reigning Miss Rodeo America McKenzie Haley will get to crown.

AT LAST…Studio At The Palms

A few weeks ago, we, the members of MJ2, had the pleasure of filming a special TV segment for HLN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade, called Breakthrough Women at Studio At The Palms, in the Palms Las Vegas…What a thrill!

George Maloof, of the Palms Las Vegas and Zoe Thrall, Director of Studio at the Palms, have surpassed all expectations by providing a world-class studio run by the most experienced recording industry veterans, who see to it that everyone is happy!

However, Studio at the Palms reputation as the ‘go to’ recording studio in the West is only surpassed by their love for Las Vegas and commitment to the community, which is how we met Zoe Thrall and had the privilege of recording and filming at Studio at the Palms.

We offer our deepest thanks to Zoe Thrall and her amazing staff, for their kindness, generosity and especially for helping to facilitate a wonderful day. Everyone involved in the shoot was thrilled with the professionalism shown the CNN camera crew and MJ2, but like all good things our special day came to an end, so we gathered up our equipment, gave and received some very special hugs and said hasta luego (MJ2 never say good bye)!

We left the Studio at the Palms, with our Daisy Rock Guitars slung across our backs, but we didn’t look back rather we focused on the future…a future that includes the next time we record at the legendary Studio at the Palms!

The “Diabetic Angels” are made up of two sets of identical twins who have set out to support people with diabetes and educate everyone. It all started when one of the angels was un-invited from a 4th grade party because the mom hosting the event thought that ‘diabetics were a hassle.’

CNN/HLN Films MJ2 as Breakthrough Women

MJ2 Filmed by CNN for a segment of Breakthrough Women that will exclusively air on HLN.

On Wednesday, September 7, 2011, CNN/HLN and ‘MORNING EXPRESS’ with Robin Meade, sent a producer and cameraman to our home in Las Vegas, NV, to film and interview MJ2 for CNN’s special segment, “Breakthrough Women”…WHAT AN HONOR!

It all started a few weeks ago, when we received a surprise phone call from CNN explaining that they were researching MJ2, regarding our music and years of volunteer work to raise diabetes awareness and funds for medical research. CNN explained that they were interested in us for a special segment entitled, ‘Breakthrough Women,’ hosted by Robin Meade of HLN’s Morning Express. About a week after that conversation we received another call telling us that the four members of MJ2 had been selected as ‘Breakthrough Women!’

CNN focused on the Diabetic Angels, our global online community founded by the four members of MJ2, truly a wonderful resource for both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics. CNN was equally interested in our music and our new album, ‘You Can’t Say Love Enough.’ With the help of Dennis Money, our producer and president of the record label ‘Sweetsong Nashville,’ we arranged to have the net proceeds, from the sale of the ‘Celebrity’ Single, which is the title track from the album, donated from the Diabetic Angels, MJ2 and Sweetsong Nashville, to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

This is pretty much the ‘back story,’ as to why CNN was at our home in Las Vegas and since many of our fans have asked us what was going on, we decided to write about this amazing experience! So…here is the pictorial Low-Down’ - an account of our incredible day, beginning with the four of us just prior to the interview!

Our morning began much earlier then normal, 6:00 AM…yikes! We got a quick bite to eat and one by one rushed to hair and make-up, praying that Araceli, our make-up artist would work wonders. We needed her to conceal those dark circles one gets, when they’ve only had four hours of sleep, because they were so excited they were up half the night! Somehow everyone finished on time and we anxiously waited to greet the CNN producer and cameraman.

As usual, meeting the four of us (two sets of red-headed twins), can be overwhelming, especially when all the members of MJ2 are named Mollie or Jackie and this morning’s meet and greet with Linda, the CNN producer, and Beau, the cameraman, was no exception. The bewildered look on their faces said it all! Luckily, both Linda and Beau had a good sense of humor and we successfully moved past the, “Who is who” routine that twins are so accustomed to. Linda began preparing for the interview and Beau secured our microphones.

Over the years we’ve been interviewed many times, but somehow it never gets old. As a matter of fact, we still have the jitters prior to an interview, especially a network interview and the trick is to remain focused and maintain control…NOT! :]

Even though being interviewed can be unnerving, especially when we don’t know where or when we might be thrown a curve ball, we try to maintain a sense of humor and enjoy the moment… Mollie J’s motto is smile, smile, and then smile some more! :]

Oh My Gosh…what a thrill! We were so fortunate to have not one but two exciting experiences on the same day! First CNN interviews us and spends the day following us around, then we spent a good part of the afternoon at the state of the art STUDIO at the PALMS, in the Palms Casino Resort, recording the vocal tracks for our next single, “If We Were Big and Rich”…THANKS ZOE! No wonder all the stars record there, this studio is awesome, truly world class!

It’s rare that the four members of MJ2 aren’t interviewed at the same time, but CNN decided to split up the ‘sets’ of twins, interviewing one person from each set, for the morning interview and the other twin from each set for the late afternoon interview. The funny thing is the audience frequently finds it more confusing when the sets of twins are split up, than when the four of us are interviewed together. In the end, there’s no way MJ2 isn’t going to be confusing to someone and in this case, the audience probably thinks the same two people did both interviews, but changed clothes! :-) haha!

One of the primary reasons CNN selected us as, “Breakthrough Women,” is because the members of MJ2 founded the Diabetic Angels, (@diabeticangels) a global online community intended to be a user-friendly resource, for both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. In this picture CNN is filming MJ2 in a meeting about the Diabetic Angels, with Mollie J. and Jackie J. on the computers.

The Diabetic Angels focus on empowering diabetics and giving them, their families and friends important information, intended to help them manage their diabetes with confidence. The Diabetic Angels also teach members and visitors to their website how to be their own best advocate and how to raise diabetes awareness and funds for medical research. Additionally, the Diabetic Angels stress the significance of NOT allowing oneself to become a victim of the disease…diabetes is not who you are, it’s what you have!

A very special thank you to Metro Pizza, who was kind enough to accommodate the needs of MJ2 and CNN’s film crew.

Thank goodness for METRO PIZZA! (Thanks Sam and John!) After a long day of filming, everyone was starving and Metro Pizza made us the best pizza in town! If you look closely you’ll notice that’s where we are, @metropizza on E. Tropicana Ave. in Las Vegas, having been served by our favorite waiter/screenwriter Ryan…can you figure out which one of us is Ryan! (More on Metro Pizza coming soon!) :]

We also are blessed to work with Michael Berk, who filmed CNN…filming MJ2! :] Michael, President of Programing, Director of the Players Network, has written and produced more than a dozen movies, several of which have won Emmy Awards and received Golden Globe nominations. Some of Michael’s work includes being the Executive Producer and Creator of the TV show Baywatch and the Screenwriter for the inspirational feature film and hit movie, Soul Surfer.

In addition to working with Michael, we are fortunate that Mark Bradley, Michael’s partner and CEO of the Player’s Network, also spent the day filming CNN…film MJ2. Both Michael and Mark interviewed members of MJ2 about the experience of being selected as, ‘Breakthrough Women.’ We are grateful to be associated with such creative and wonderful people.

When looking at the group category in country music right now it is arguably one of the toughest categories with the likes of Lady Antbellum and Rascal Flatts as well as newcomers like Gloriana and Eli Young Band making a splash in it. Just as with the duo category, you need to bring something unique to the table to help you stand out and MJ2 does just that. The group consists of two sets of twins that coincidently are all related. The release of their debut single “You Can’t Say Love Enough” has also helped to earn the girls some buzz much due in part to a few reasons. The first and most important is that portions of the money earned from it will go to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and secondly because of their guest stars on the track that includes country legends Dolly Parton and Larry Gatlin as well as Heidi Newfield, Cowboy Troy, Wayne Newton and more. This all-star single features all the guests as well as the girls in MJ2 lending their voices to the song all for a great cause. The downside to something of this magnitude is that it takes away from what could have been awesome family harmonies, but with the guest stars and the cause this is still an exciting single and a song worth getting behind. I look forward to seeing what MJ2 can do on their own but dig the vibe of the many different backgrounds that come together on this single as well.

Recently, we had the opportunity to be interviewed for the Larry King Special, “Unthinkable: The Alzheimer’s Epidemic.” They asked us to participate in this special because we have spent the past few years caring for our parents/grandparents, both of whom were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

This compelling special will air on tonight, Sunday May 1, 2011 at 8pm ET/5:00, 8:00, and 11:00pm PT and and will re-air on Saturday, May 7 at 8pm ET/PT.

CNN Presents: A Larry King Special

Larry King special “Unthinkable: the Alzheimer’s Epidemic” to air May 1 at 8pm ET

On Sunday May 1^st, CNN will air the first Larry King special, premiering at 8pm ET/PT and will be titled “Unthinkable: the Alzheimer’s Epidemic.” It’s being called the disease of the 21^st century as an estimated 5.4 million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It is the sixth-leading cause of death across all ages in the United States, but many Americans still do not know much about this illness. The one-hour special will look into Alzheimer’s disease, who gets it and why, the race to find effective treatments and a possible cure.

King will be joined by people who have been touched by Alzheimer’s disease and will include interviews with former First Lady Laura Bush and California’s former First Lady and Alzheimer’s activist Maria Shriver; actors Seth Rogen, and Angie Dickinson; TV host Leeza Gibbons; football star Terrell Owens and son of President Ronald Reagan, Ron Reagan. Neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta will explain what Alzheimer’s is and how this disease affects the human brain.

Seth Rogen, talks to King about supporting his fiancée and her family as they deal with her mom’s early diagnosis at the age of fifty-five. He wants the world to know this is a young person’s problem too, “More and more people in our generation are gonna have to deal with it,” Rogen said. “We’re dealing with it before most people have to,” he tells King. “But as you get older and you see it happening to your parents, and ultimately realize it could happen to yourself and your friends, it becomes much more real and not some imaginary old person problem, you know?” Shriver, in the first interview she’s given since losing her father, Sargent Shriver, to Alzheimer’s disease this year tells King, “I think anybody who’s not concerned about Alzheimer’s is in denial.”

In addition to visiting the Mayo Clinic, Larry King will visit the cutting-edge Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health at the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas, and he will be joined by Ron Reagan. While there, one of them will take a brain scan that will indicate if he is at risk for Alzheimer’s or other memory disorders, and one will opt out. Tune in and as they will share the results with the audience and talk to Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, Director, ClevelandClinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and Larry Ruvo, philanthropist and visionary, to see how doctors are treating patients and what people can do to diminish their risk for Alzheimer’s. Dr. Ronald Petersen, Director, Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, who treated President Reagan warned, “If we don’t do something about Alzheimer’s disease right now, Alzheimer’s disease in and of itself may bankrupt the healthcare system.”The special hour will also broadcast on CNNi and will re-air on Saturday, May 7 at 8pm ET/PT.
