More on Tuesday’s Michael Jackson Memorial, Plus Jackson Mom Removed as Administrator

The Jackson family has released a list of participants for tomorrow’s Michael Jackson memorial at the Staple Center in Los Angeles. More than 1.6 million people registered for a pair of tickets, only 8,750 names were chosen:

Representatives for Jackson’s family released a list of participants Monday that includes Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Kobe Bryant, Brooke Shields, Motown founder Berry Gordy, Lionel Richie, John Mayer, Usher, Jennifer Hudson and Martin Luther King III and his sister Bernice.

Contrary to previous reports, Jackson’s ex-wife Debbie Rowe will NOT attend the memorial. All of the major networks and cable channels will be covering the memorial tomorrow beginning at 1 pm ET.

Plus, Jackson’s mother, Katherine, has been removed as temporary administrator of Jackson’s estate:

A judge said Monday that Michael Jackson’s longtime attorney and a family friend should take over the pop singer’s estate for now, rejecting a request from Jackson’s mother to be put in charge or share control.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff backed attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, who had been designated in Jackson’s 2002 will as the people he wanted to administer his estate. Attorneys for the pop singer’s mother repeatedly objected to their appointment at Monday’s court hearing.

“It’s our desire to do everything we can to carry out Michael Jackson’s wishes and to maximize the estate,” said Howard Weitzman, who spoke after the hearing on behalf of Branca. Weitzman issued a statement later calling the judge’s.

Paula Abdul Optimistic About Return to American Idol

Paula Abdul tells the Associated Press that she’s optimistic about remaining on American Idol, pending the negotiation of a new contract:

ATLANTA — Paula Abdul says she’s optimistic about remaining as an American Idol judge and says the show has invited her back for a ninth season and beyond — subject to the negotiation of a new contract.

Abdul told The Associated Press in an interview on Monday in Atlanta that she’s been invited to stay for the duration of the show. She was backstage at the new television show Drop Dead Diva, which premieres on July 12.

Abdul’s contract, which expired after the eighth season, has not been renewed.

The 47-year-old singer-dancer says she hopes a deal can be arranged so she can return to the hit show.

Oh, Paula is coming back. Her peeps will negotiate a nice big raise, and she’ll return…

Kara DioGuardi Marries in Maine

Kara DioGuardi married fiance Mike McCuddy yesterday in Prospect Harbor, ME. In Touch has the exclusive:

American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi wed teacher-turned-general contractor Mike McCuddy on July 5 at 12:30 in the afternoon in Prospect Harbor, Maine. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter wore a Vera Wang gown for the small ceremony. The couple, who met when Mike, 34, built the house next to Kara’s in Maine, got engaged in December. They exchanged vows at the United Methodist Church, across the street from her house, in front of about 30 guests. “I feel great. What was most unbelievable about the experience was when I looked out at the church and saw all these people that were so important to me and Mike, who were there for us. It was pretty powerful. I was very emotional and I’m not somebody who breaks down and cries,” Kara, 38, tells In Touch exclusively, adding that the weather even behaved. “It’s been raining in Maine for 60 days. The only day that was nice was yesterday!”

Adam Lambert, Kris Allen Hit the Stage Again as American Idols Live Tour Kicks Off in Portland

Goth kids, soccer moms and diehard Idol junkies — including one superfan with Clay Aiken’s autograph tattooed on her shoulder — packed Portland, Oregon’s Rose Garden last night for the inaugural performance of American Idol’s summer tour.

The two biggest stars of the show — winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert — embraced what endeared them to millions of fans throughout Season Eight. “Glambert” was out in full force, with tight pants, his otherworldly wail and a tribute to the original rock androgyne, David Bowie. Wrapped in a plaid shirt and a pair of jeans, Allen kept it simple and real, embracing the stripped-down soul sound that elevated him from dark horse to worthy champion.

American Idol’s Top 10 Live Tour kicks off in Portland, Oregon, stops in Los Angeles on July 16

The 50-city Idols Live tour kicked off on Sunday at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. Each finalist got a solo set, from 10th place finisher Michael Sarver to winner Kris Allen.
The three-hour concert was a combination between songs from the tv series and material picked for the tour. The set boasts a 42- by 18 foot video-screen backdrop as well as four smaller screens, each receiving separate signals.

We’ll get to Kris later this week, but for now, let’s mull Allison, one of the most exciting female rock voices to score a major-label deal in recent memory.

Pop music review: Disney Channel star Demi Lovato thrills crowd at Superpages.com Center

The 2008 American Idol runner-up, wearing a red-white-and-blue-checked shirt that evoked a patriotic-farmboy feel, displayed exactly why he vaulted so high in the Idol stratosphere. His pure, strong pipes were in perfect form throughout the set, which included his hit “Crush,” as well as an a cappella version of “Como La Flor,” which he sang as a tribute to the late singer Selena.

The audience jumped and screamed for the squeaky-clean Archuleta, who seems to have found a perfect home within the Disney universe. No, he doesn’t have a sitcom, but he was on that other hit show way back when. That, judging by the fans’ reaction, seems to make up for it.

From stolen album to stolen hearts … This Idol’s in heaven

WE WERE supposed to be talking about his spotlight role in “Grease” (opening tomorrow at the Academy of Music), or maybe his current album, “The Distance,” or maybe his tell-some memoir, “Heart Full of Soul,” which recounts the guy’s rise from a humble Alabama childhood to the Season Five winner on “American Idol.”

But the morning I caught up with Taylor Hicks was a sad one. Michael Jackson had died the night before, and the shock hadn’t worn off. First, we had to grieve.

L.A. braces for a crush of mourners for Jackson memorial

LOS ANGELES — Legions of Michael Jackson fans learned Sunday whether they had been granted one of the 8,750 pairs of free tickets for the pop superstar’s memorial service Tuesday. The event is expected to tie the downtown area into a knot of fans, traffic, celebrities and media outlets.

Organizers urged those who did not receive the lottery-drawn tickets to stay away from the downtown Staples Center and the Nokia Theatre next door, which will host the event; a police perimeter will be set up for blocks around the venues. Officials recommended that fans — who filed 1.6 million requests for tickets on the Web — watch the service on TV.

Lambert, Iraheta Get Pumped for American Idols Live’s First Gig

Kris Allen looked visibly uncomfortable in the hours leading up to the American Idol tour’s kick-off show in Portland, Oregon. But it wasn’t because of nerves. “I just really have to pee,” he said, hoping for a well-deserved break in the midst of a series of interviews. The Idol winner and his nine companions were feeling more pumped than apprehensive about the show. After all, they’re playing for fans now. “You don’t have the whole judge thing, the cameras aren’t in your face,” Allen said. “You’re just playing for the crowd and you can feed off that energy.” “You’re nervous on the show because you have these four guys who are going to tell me how much I suck in front of so many friggin’ people,” added Allison Iraheta, the season’s youngest Idol. “With the tour, I know there are a lot of people out there who voted for me.”

Can You Duet: The Singles Perform

This this week’s Can You Duet had the judges putting together duos out of single contestants. The ones who survived, were the duos who managed to not only put together decent performances on a dime, but were able to muster up some chemistry, despite being strangers.

Former American Idol Season 7 contestant, Brandon Green survives on to the next round, in no small part to his incredibly talented partner, 18 year old Jonathan Cox. Their cover of the Dixie Chicks “Long Time Gone” was a highlight of the night. Another duo to watch out for are Ryan Larkins and Avalon Peacock, who performed a lovely “Tennessee Waltz”. They paired up early on, and the judges were so impressed, they decided to keep them together.

The other duo who advanced, Keeira Lynn Ford and Matt Boggs, ripped though Ray Charles “What I Say” and may be this group’s version of Soul/Country.

Next week, the three duos who advanced from last week, and this week’s survivors become the Top 6, and will be mentored by judge Big Kenny. At the end of the episode, a duo will be eliminated.

Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta — American Idols to dye for

Adam has blue highlights in his jet-black hair. They weren’t always noticeable under televison lights, but they’re very apparent when meeting him in person. “They’re a little punched up now from where they were,” he says. “The inspiration was one of those black feathers, you know, that are kind of iridescent? I took that to my hairdressers and said, ‘Make my hair look like that!’”

Allison Iraheta, who sported dyed-red hair all season, now boasts a veritable rainbow of colors — pink, red, blue and green. “I got a little bored of the red,” she says. The additional colors are all new, added just in the past week.

Matt Giraud and Michael Sarver give a show before the show

When the Idols first arrived in Portland a few days ago, Matt Giraud got back to his roots as a hotel lounge piano player when he and Michael Sarver ran across a piano in their hotel lobby and started an impromptu late-night set.

“We found an old rickety piano,” Matt says, “and, since I’m a piano player, I can’t help it.”

“And, since I’m a singer, I can’t help it, either,” Michael says.

Matt Giraud puts on his hosting hat

Matt Giraud has gone over to the other side. The fifth-place contestant on this season’s American Idol has signed up to help host and judge an online vocal talent competition on YOBI.tv - The Reality Contest Network.

“It’s a new web series called YOBISing,” Matt says. “They’re in their second season, and they hired me to be their Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell.” Matt says he recently taped a promo video, which will be out soon: “Then, after the tour, it’s going to pick up.”

Anoop Desai, getting back up to speed

Shortly before Saturday night’s dress rehearsal, Anoop Desai was nursing a hot tea, trying to pamper his voice after a week of being under the weather.

“Last Friday, we had a pretty tough rehearsal, then I went out afterwards, so that did a number on my throat,” he says. “I was on vocal rest for about four or five days — I didn’t talk at all. As I was getting over that — I guess my immunity was low, because of whatever medication I was on — I caught something else. I’m getting over being on that. Most of these bugs are about a week long, so I’m on the last leg of it, hopefully.”

Megan Joy plans on being in the best shape of her life by the time the American Idols Live tour wraps. “I ran around the arena, like, seven times today,” Megan said on the eve of the tour launch, “and then up and down the stairs until I couldn’t do it anymore.”

Susan Boyle Records First Song for New Album

Susan Boyle took time out from the Britain’s Got Talent tour to record the first track on her planned album with Simon Cowell’s team, who are clearly excited by what they heard.

“She sounds fantastic on record,” says Cowell. “She’s so good, the album is not just going to be show tunes. We’re going to take our time with this.”

Angels honor Gehrig on Fourth of July

In an effort to raise awareness and financial support for organizations leading the fight against ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the Angels will have American Idol Finalist Michael Johns sing the national anthem before Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Johns, an avid supporter of ALS research, has been involved in certain organizations to help the fight against ALS.

In December 2008, he released the song “Another Christmas,” with 50 percent of the proceeds going towards ALS research.

“Michael Johns embodies the spirit of this day,” Angels entertainment and production manager Pete Bull said. “He loves America and the opportunity he had with American Idol was able to show what we can provide as a nation. He truly loves our country.”

Kellie Pickler insists she’s not dating Kid Rock

Though a tabloid recently “reported” that Kellie Pickler and Kid Rock are dating, Pickler’s publicist protests, saying there is no truth to the story.

So … not dating, haven’t dated. That’s the official word.

Dreamgirl’s nightmare run

THE past year for singer and Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Hudson reads like one of her on-screen plots, but things are changing.

Riding high on a wave of movie and music success, Hudson’s fairytale life was shattered in October when her mother, brother and nephew were shot and killed.

Distraught, Hudson released a statement to fans thanking them for their support, but has never spoken publicly about the deaths.

Nine months on, the 27-year-old is pregnant with her first child, to her fiance, actor David Otunga, and her career is firmly on track.

There was a time when Lindsey Cardinale could blend in as a college student on any campus across the country.

But then she appeared on the popular television show “American Idol” and is now recognized nationally.

Cardinale, who performed Friday evening at Betts Park for the Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, was a finalist on the fourth season of “American Idol” in 2005.

Cardinale said Friday morning that she has been balancing singing and school in Nashville, Tenn.

The country singer said she is a journalism student with a minor in songwriting, and she has been fitting in shows between classes.

“I’m such a big school person,” Cardinale said, adding that she genuinely enjoys college and when she has a week off, she sometimes doesn’t know what to do with herself.

LA Ballet meets ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

Viewers of “So You Think You Can Dance” — now in its fifth summer season on Fox — were treated earlier this week to the competition’s first pointe-shoe performance: Contestants Ade Obayomi, 20, of Orange County and Melissa Sandvig, 29, of Los Alamitos were seen as literature’s most romantic (though unfortunately doomed) young couple in a graceful pas de deux from “Romeo and Juliet,” with Sandvig on her toes. The judges loved it.

And Culture Monster is pleased to report that the man who choreographed the pas de deux and coached Obayomi and Sandvig through their moves was none other than Thordal Christensen, who is co-artistic director of Los Angeles Ballet with his wife, Colleen Neary.

More On Danny Gokey’s Nashville Meetings

Brian Mansfield of Idol Chatter reports a little more on Danny Gokey’s meetings with record labels last week. Not only did he meet with Sony Nashville, but also with Word, a Christan Label:

When Danny Gokey was in Nashville this past Tuesday, he met not only with Sony Nashville but with Word Entertainment. But Danny has yet to make a decision about his recording career. “Basically, they were preliminary talks — where we could go and what we could do.”

The meeting with Word put Danny in touch with Mark Bright. He’s Word’s president and CEO, but he’s better known as a producer who has worked with Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts. “He’s someone I’m very interested in working with,” Danny says.

The only problem — Bright runs a Christian record label. “I told him, ‘I don’t want to be signed to a Christian label, because I don’t want to exclude anyone,’” Danny says. “I am who I am and I have my beliefs, but I don’t want to exclude anyone. I want my music and my message and my foundation to get out and touch as many people as they can.

“He was completely okay with that. He was like, ‘We can think in alternate routes.’ It was really cool.”

So, Danny could wind up on a Christian label, but not singing Christian music? Hm. Maybe an album of vaguely Christian “inspirational” music? In any event, the music Danny records will likely depend on what label signs him.

Although Danny has expressed interest in songwriting in the past, he’ll be singing mostly outside material on this first CD. “I’m not fully there yet in my writing skills,” says Danny. “There’s a level of writing that are just hits. I’m not there yet.”

Danny continues, “I want to be a hit. This ain’t about the money. I know I can make more money writing, but it’s not about that yet. That’ll come. I’m looking for longevity. I’m looking to get my foot all the way through the door.”

ETA: I think he’ll be better off with Word doing Christian music. He’s admitted to a) Not having a “twang” in his voice and b) Not knowing about the Grand Ole’ Opry before Idol. Country fans can smell a poser from a mile away. Danny, an experienced gospel singer, should stick to what he knows.

American Idols Live: First Reports from Portland

Richard Rushfield of the LA Times is in Portland to cover the American Idols Live debut concert in Portland tonight, and he tells a remarkable story of a very invested Idol fan. Security!

One of the group told of the particularly impressive depths to which she had gone to get to see her Idols. If she didn’t seem so nice, shy and non-terrifying, her tale might be a bit more, well, terrifying. As it is, perhaps it can serve as a cautionary tale to Idol security. This young woman admitted in our conversation that she is staying at the same hotel as the Idols. When asked how that happened, she nods and says that it took a lot of work. “Some of the them haven’t been too careful,” she says. Apparently since they had been in town, one of the Idols linked on twitter to a video he’d made of a few of them hanging out in one of their hotel rooms. The industrious young fan studied the design elements present in the video - the wallpaper, the room furnishings, and went to various Portland hotel websites, studying pictures of their room until she found a match. After which she promptly checked in.

Also, he posts a little bit of a tease about tonight’s show:

At around seven PM the full-dress rehearsal began for a crowd of about 30 people in the giant arena. I am barred from revealing specific details about the show, but can reveal that Idol fans are in for a very different sort of concert than they saw last year. Last year’s show delivered a great many crowd-pleasing moments, but seemed heavy in gigantic anthem arena classic rock vein. This year’s show - from its set to the band warddrobe to the songs - is, like Portland, more low key than in-your-face, but ultimately seems a much more contemporary, cooler shows - with this year’s singers representing the range of current styles that dominate pop radio today, heavily drawing from the alternative music territory that only Brooke and Jason ventured into last year. The entire production - and very especially the group numbers - seems geared towards a much far less schmaltzy, current sound.

Also, some fans sitting outside the arena hoping for a glimpse of the Idols got invited inside to watch the run through…

Jennifer Hudson to Perform at Michael Jackson Memorial, Madonna Pays Tribute

According to CNN, Jennifer Hudson will perform at the Michael Jackson Memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday July 7.

One more reason to tune into the memorial on Tuesday. Yep, you won’t have fly to LA to watch the service. CNN is planning on airing the event live starting at 12 Noon Eastern Time. I would expect other news outlets and maybe even the networks to follow. ETA: More coverage.

Also, Madonna paid tribute to Jackson tonight in the same arena where he was to stage his comeback, dancing along with a Jackson impersonator.

No Michael Jackson Tribute On the Idol Tour, Plus other Random Updates

Anoop Desai twittered late last night,

“so we tried to work in a short MJ tribute to the end of the show today during rehearsal but it didn’t work out logistically, unfortunately.”

That doesn’t surprise me at all, the show was already set in stone by the time Jackson passed last Thursday. The way the Idol show is devised, there’s very little room for improvisation. Even seemingly little changes are big changes that involve not only the Idols learning new material, but coordination with the tech and crew as well…

Also, no lazy 4th of July for the Top 10, they are running through the show twice today, according to Scott MacIntyre.

The American Idols Live tour begins Sunday July 5, and I need your help!

If you’re going to the American Idols Live Tour, I want to hear from YOU.

Here’s how it will work.

Each day, at around the time the concert begins, I’ll start a post that will be updated with links to videos, photos, recaps and tweets. If you send me your tour swag directly, you’ll get your very own post with a byline.

Third place is the charm for “Idol” Gokey

Danny Gokey finished third on the recently completed season eight of TV’s “American Idol.” He was voted off of the show in the next-to-last episode, leaving Adam Lambert and Kris Allen to battle it out for the title on the season finale.

So, it might seem as if Gokey was never really a central part of the conversation about who would win this past season.

But Gokey he suspects he was much closer to winning it all than many people assume. While most observers (not to mention the “Idol” judges) expected Lambert — with his big voice, flashy goth clothes and makeup and his strong stage presence — to win easily, Gokey thinks his main competition was Allen, whose smoother mainstream pop sound and boy-next-door image carried him to the upset win over Lambert.

‘American Idol’ Taylor Hicks turns to Birmingham pros to advance his post-’Idol’ brand

Taylor Hicks has moved beyond the “American Idol” title to become his own brand.

Hicks has picked Birmingham’s WilbanksElam Marketing & Public Relations to help him promote that brand in his home state - a state that helped make him an American idol and catapulted him to celebrity in 2006.

“With the American Idol phenomenon, people are personally invested in your career and future because of all the voting done on the show,” Hicks said in an interview. “Being from Birmingham, being from Alabama, I want to keep as many people as I can informed about what I’m doing because I feel like they have a vested interest.”

From ‘Idol’ to Teen Angel: ‘Grease’ is the New Word for Singer Taylor Hicks

Jul. 4–It may not seem that far a step from idol of teenagers to Teen Angel.

But when the former is “American Idol,” the massively successful Fox-TV show, and the latter is the elder statesman role in the musical “Grease,” there seems few personalities that could fill both.

Except Taylor Hicks.

The gray-haired, blue-eyed-soul-singing Hicks became the most unlikely, and oldest, “American Idol” in 2006. Then a year ago, he traded solo tours for Broadway.

Now he’s back on the road with the national touring company of “Grease,” which opens Tuesday at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia.

‘Idol’ alum Phil Stacey aims to comfort

“American Idol” made Phil Stacey one of the country’s most famous sailors when he sang as a finalist in Season 6.

On his upcoming album, Stacey pays tribute to those who are serving in war zones with much less fanfare.

The ballad “Old Glory” is among the most moving tracks on Stacey’s “Into the Light,” which is due out Aug. 25.

The idea for the song came to Stacey just after his band played for a ceremony honoring a command returning to Naval Station Mayport, Fla., from deployment.

While walking along the shore afterward, he said, “I looked up and saw a frigate going by with a flag waving … that song was written in about 15 minutes.”

LOUIS Walsh is set to follow Cheryl Cole - by appearing on a US version of The X Factor, TV Biz can reveal.

Simon Cowell is planning to take the hit ITV format across the pond next year and wants his two sidekicks to take part.

Simon, 49, is already talking to US channel chiefs about launching the show as a “friendly rival” to American Idol - where he is also a judge.

Talks are at an early stage but it is thought a deal could see the show being launched on Fox - the channel broadcasting Idol.

Whitney Houston’s long-awaited new single, “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” is streaming HERE. It was written by Diane Warren and produced by David Foster.

She sounds clear and strong on this simple R&B ballad–no vocal gymastics or huge power notes here. But I can’t imagine this old-fashioned AC power ballad getting any pop radio play these days. I also wonder if, after years away from performing mired in drug abuse, she can carry off her big songs live…

Michael Jackson News Roundup: Memorial Service Ticket Details

International peeps who are wondering why it’s so quiet around here today: A major US holiday, July 4th is tomorrow. So, besides the big Idol concert on Sunday, there won’t be much going on this weekend…

Thought I’d do another Micheal Jackson news roundup for those of you still following the circus –> that would be me….

Official details about the Michael Jackson memorial scheduled for Tuesday at the Staples center have been released. “…17,500 tickets free tickets will be provided. There also will be a free worldwide video feed…11,000 tickets will be for seats inside Staples Center and 6,500 will be for seats in the adjacent Nokia Theater, where fans will watch a simulcast. People who want tickets must register on the web at Staplescenter.com. After 6 p.m. Saturday, 8,750 names will be randomly selected to receive two tickets each. Notifications will go out on Sunday. Those selected will obtain their tickets via Ticketmaster on Monday.

Jackson was working on two albums at the time of his death. One was in the pop vein that made him famous and another consisted of an instrumental classical composition. Claude Kelly and Akon were working on his pop album.

Also, according to US, Jackson planned to duet with his oldest son, Prince, 12, during his London concert run.

US is reporting that Jackson recently had a cancerous lesion removed from his nose that precipitated many more painkiller scrips.

Debbie Rowe’s attorney says despite what she told NBC, she has “not reached a final decision about custody”. He says the Rowe camp will keep silent on pending custody matters from here on out. In other words, “I told Debbie to SFTU”

A bunch of music related stories from Billboard: Randy Phillips, The CEO of AEG Live, the concert promoters behind Jackson’s London concerts, speaks on the fallout from Jackson’s death. Insurance will cover much of the costs, but not if Jackson’s death is due to a pre-existing condition or drug/alcohol related. AEG will also earn revenue from the audio and video footage of the concert rehearsals. Also there could be an MJ tribute show to take place on the dates of Jackson’s concerts using his elaborate stage production.
How Thriller changed the music business. Pepsi and Michael Jackson made marketing history. Jackson on track for more Billboard Charts records, and Jackson music sales could last for months.

The AP is reporting that law enforcement officials found the powerful sedative, Diprivan, in Jackson’s home. “Diprivan is an anesthetic widely used in operating rooms to induce unconsciousness. Also known as Propofol, it’s given intravenously and is very unusual to have in a private home.”

Interesting So You Think You Can Dance post-show wrap up from FOX 11 LA. It turns out, Season 4’s Chelsie Hightower was chosen to be one of Michael Jackson’s backup dancers for his London concerts. Mia Michaels tells FOX that reports she heard from Jackson’s rehearsals were all glowing.

Also, Nigel Lythgoe talks about his brand-new Dizzyfeet Foundation, set up to help provide dance programs for underprivileged kids. And yes, it’s official, a Katie Holmes/Tyce DiOrio Broadway routine will air on the 100th episode of SYTYCD on July 23. Plus, there are short interviews with bootees Vitolio Jeune and Karla Garcia.

The Idols did a series of video interviews with Billboard nagazine, watch Adam Lambert’s interview after the jump.

There’s no discussion of the upcoming tour, but he does describe how he got “Whole Lotta Love” cleared for the show, despite Led Zepplin tunes never having been cleared before. It turns out the publishers’ kids were Adam fans.

Also, when he considered doing Cher for Hollywood Week, he thought for a second that it might be too “gay” but then decided it didn’t matter–that he’d just treat the song like a piece of music and not worry about what the audience might think.

Also, from ONTD: Adam will be Kathy Griffin’s guest when she sub-hosts Larry King Live next Friday.

Last but not least, it’s the Danny Gokey interview with Lindsey Parker of Yahoo Music.

Danny reveals 2 of the 4 songs he’s singing on the Idol tour–”P.Y.T” and “My Wish.” He also mentions talks he had with 19R and his upcoming meetings with record labels (already happened). He hopes to sign a record deal soon.

As far as his sound, he’d like to do a soul/R&B/Latin fusion, but is also considering taking on a modern soul/country sound. Danny admits, “I don’t have much of a twang, but I have that soul.”

Also, he’s OK with not making the Top 2 as predicted–Idol was a launching pad that has put him closer to his dreams.

Danny addresses the cultural aspects of this year’s competition. While he’s a man of faith, he says his is a message of love. He name checks Martin Luther King as an example, and says he’d like to start a movement with his music. Lindsey says she saw no strain or discomfort between any of the Idols, including between Danny and Adam.

‘Crying Girl’ Ashley Ferl Auditions For ‘American Idol’

Ashley Ferl, the little blonde girl who gained national fame by breaking down in hysterics after watching Sanjaya Malakar perform on season six of “American Idol,” made her own play for singing stardom yesterday.

Ferl, dubbed ‘Crying Girl’ for her uncontrollable tears over Sanjaya, turned 16 this year, making her eligible to try out for the competition. She and 11,000 other hopefuls hit the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California for round one of the season nine auditions. She was among the first in line outside of the Rose Bowl gates.

American Idol Record Deals: What’s Up With the Others?

So far, American Idol winner Kris Allen, runner-up Adam Lambert and fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta have all inked recording contracts. But what about the others?

We caught up with the top 10 at their tour rehearsals recently to hear the status of their post-Idol plans. And here’s what they have to report…

Danny Gokey: “I’m sitting down with record labels next week. I hope to sort it out before tour. But I don’t want to wait too long, the quicker the better.” In the meantime, he continues to grow his Sophia’s Heart Foundation, which he created in honor of his late wife. “We’re planning a food and clothing drive in Milwaukee. And we’re looking for a facility there or here in L.A. for the foundation’s events. We might have the L.A. facility running first before Milwaukee. It’s a turnkey operation, so I can start running programs right away.”

Simon Cowell has revealed he is delighted with the results of Susan Boyle’s first day in the recording studio.

The 48-year-old Scottish church worker - who became an overnight global internet sensation on YouTube after auditioning for ITV show Britain’s Got Talent - has recorded her first track.

Simon told The Sun: “I’ve cut one track with her and she sounds fantastic on record - she’s so good, the album is not just going to be show tunes, we’re going to take our time with this.”

‘American Idol’ hopeful finds auditions to be contrary to what show portrays

About a month ago, Brittany Philippi’s friend, Danielle Mann, convinced her to tryout for the next season of “American Idol.”

“I’ve been told that I should tryout before, but she (Mann) had gone online and said auditions were June 30, I didn’t have a choice, and she was getting off work to go with me,” Philippi said.

Auditioning was a two-day process.

On Sunday, Hemet residents Philippi, 21, and Mann woke up at 2 a.m. to be at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, where auditions were held, by 8 a.m. when they started.

American Idol: Where Are ‘Idol’ Performers?

The “American Idol” concert tour kicks off in Portland on Sunday, but some “Idol” performers are already in the Rose City.

FOX 12 viewers have spotted some of the performers around town.

Michael Jackson On Track For More Billboard Charts Records

After his record-breaking chart week, the late Michael Jackson will continue to shake up the charts next week, too.

According to SoundScan’s Building Chart data, more than 110,000 Jackson albums were purchased during the first two days of the new tracking week (June 29-30).

Billboard estimates that the seven merchants that report to Nielsen SoundScan’s Building chart — Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target and Anderson Merchandisers — make up about 60% of all U.S. album sales. Nielsen SoundScan’s sales tracking week runs from Monday through Sunday of each week.

Michael Jackson Music Sales Surge Could Last For Months

In the days following Michael Jackson’s June 25 death, fans flocked to record stores and digital music outlets to purchase one last memory. And merchants say they expect the Jackson sales surge to last for weeks—maybe even months.

“With the around-the-clock coverage and questions about his death, this story will keep going, with every development giving it a new bit of life,” says Kerry Fly, VP of purchasing and marketing at wholesaler Eurpac.

Jackson’s solo album sales in the United States skyrocketed from 10,000 copies in the week before his death to 422,000 in the week ended June 28, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

David Cook credits experience with ‘Idol’ win

Like millions throughout the world, 2008 American Idol winner David Cook grew up with Michael Jackson.

“Michael Jackson’s important to me in the same way that he’s important to music in general,” the touring Cook said Saturday from Aspen, Colo.

“Michael took pop music and made it more than pop music. He made it pop culture, he made it music history. You don’t earn the nickname ‘king of pop’ on a whim. His contributions to music are incalculable.”

I not only like it, I love it. And you will too…

Daughtry is not just picking up where they left off with their second CD. They’re actually improving on their first release by giving us a project that feels less like a collection of singles and more like a cohesive album.

That’s not to say there aren’t singles on “Town,” because there are—good ones. But sometimes it’s nice to hear more from an artist than just songs on the radio. And “Town” gives us that whole package…

‘Idol’ finalist Blake Lewis to perform at ’09 Rock ’n Blues

Blake Lewis, American Idol 2007 finalist, sang at the White House for First Lady Michele Obama in April. Now he will come to Novato to perform at the 7th annual Rock’n Blues By the Lake on Sept. 26.

Lewis is said to be one of the most popular Idol finalists. He’s the only idol that has a nickname because of his unique style, “the Beat-Boxer guy.” One of the most downloaded songs from the No. 1-rated television show is his version of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name.”

Rock of Ages Cast to Perform and Sign CDs July 7 at J&R in Manhattan

To celebrate the in-store CD release of the Rock of Ages original cast recording, cast members from the Tony-nominated Best Musical will take part in an in-store event at J&R in Manhattan July 7.

The 12:30 PM event will feature Rock stars Constantine Maroulis, James Carpinello, Adam Dannheisser, Mitch Jarvis, Michele Mais, Lauren Molina, Paul Schoeffler and Wesley Taylor.

The artists will offer a live performance, which will be followed by a CD signing.

Star singer Cook latches onto top horse at GP Downs

Kristy Lee Cook and trainer Brenda Estes have claimed Rabatash, the leading thoroughbred money winner at Grants Pass Downs this season.

“We’ll give him time off to eat grass and be a real horse,” said Cook. “Then we’ll take him to California.”

The 5-year-old Kentucky-born gelding ran this year at Golden Gate and Hollywood Park before winning his two outings here.

Cook, the “American Idol” singing sensation from Selma, was at the track Wednesday to see her racehorse Go Zags.

“He hasn’t broken his maiden,” she said of the 3-year-old gelding, who will run in Saturday’s second race.

Cheryl Cole celebrated an X-tra special birthday - as it was revealed she is set to front a US version of The X Factor.

Looking stunning in a partly see-through, frilly white mini-dress, the Girls Aloud singer turned 26 with a £60,000 surprise party thrown by Chelsea and England soccer star husband Ashley.

And the icing on the cake came when she learned she had been hand-picked by Simon Cowell to take his top-rated TV show across the Atlantic.

Senior US executives from NBC are due to fly to Manchester this weekend to see her in action at the live auditions.

Cowell signs fan’s boobs

The X Factor judge, 49, was bombarded by a group of adoring female fans when he arrived back at his hotel in Manchester, who got him to sign various parts of their bodies.

The rowdy middle-aged women - thought to be on a hen party - pounced on Simon and got him to sign one excited lady’s boobs - and another one’s stomach.

He willingly obliged - and seemed more than happy to be the centre of attention.

Holmes, Lythgoe team for Dizzy Feet

Nigel Lythgoe, co-creator and exec producer of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” has teamed with helmer Adam Shankman, “Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba and thesp Katie Holmes to launch the dance scholarship fund, Dizzy Feet Foundation.

Aimed at providing underprivileged youth the opportunity to participate in dance programs, the foundation also plans to award scholarships and grants to dancers, choreographers and teachers at accredited dance studios.

“I think it’s important for children to experience music and dance,” said Holmes. “Every child should have the opportunity to discover what it is they like and have access to the very best in that pursuit.”

Before I get to last night’s So You Think You Can Dance, a little housekeeping: First, I want to thank my colleagues Alynda Wheat and Kate Ward for taking most excellent care of this TV Watch while I was gallivanting through the (ridiculously gorgeous) Pacific Northwest. Second, I want to share (most of) your outrage about the Top 18 eliminations, although technically part of the fault for them falls on the shoulders of the voters for whom the Chbeeb can do no wrong — you know who you are! Third, I must confess that after a marathon DVR viewing of the Top 18 week and especially the torpid Top 16 week, I entered this week’s Top 14 feeling uneasy about the prospects for this fifth season of SYTYCD.

Ratings: ‘America’s Got Talent’ wins Wednesday

Repeating its chart-topping performance from Tuesday, NBC’s America’s Got Talent was the most-watched program Wednesday night. It helped the Peacock edge out the Eye for the title of the evening’s most-watched network by about 40,000 viewers, according to overnight numbers. ABC’s Wipeout took the 8 p.m. hour for the third week in a row, and was followed by Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, which held second place over the course of its two-hour telecast. (It averaged 8 million viewers in the 9 p.m. hour.) A repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY dominated at 10 p.m..

‘So You Think You Can Dance’: The kiss of death!

Vitolio Way to go, America and judges: Last night I couldn’t figure out who on “So You Think You Can Dance” should go home, but I couldn’t agree more with the decision.

Before we got to the unpleasantness, the dancers performed a group number to “A Brand New Day” from “The Wiz” as choreographed by Tyce Diorio, and it was a joyous Broadway number (and probably a mini Michael Jackson tribute).

As we got to the first part of eliminations, I was surprised to learn that Karla Garcia and Vitolio Jeune were in the bottom three instead of Randi Evans and Evan Kasprzak. The judges were lukewarm for Randi and Evan’s frug, and I expected the fun factor of Vitolio and Karla’s quickstep and the novelty of her quick-change dress would have had the calls rolling in.

WOW. So Caitlin and Jason were safe! If not, I think the judges would have eliminated them. Did America rally behind them after the judges dissed their routine? If I had voted last night, I would have thrown them a few, for sure, because I did not hate that routine the way the judges did, and I have a feeling America felt the same.

At least Karla and Vitolio were eliminated on a high note–their quickstep was one on my favorites of the night. I also loved Karla’s solo. And I agree with the judges, Jeanine’s solo was beautiful, powerful–Kayla’s not so much. Vitolio was visibly moved speaking about the folks whose lives he touched. Aw–his partner Asuka in the audience looking sad.

Happy to see and hear the fantabulous most awesomeous Idol evah, Kelly Clarkson sing her latest single, “I Do Not Hook Up.” Yay Kelly.

Back from break, we start with the girls. It’s a unanimous decision. Nigel tells Jeanine that hers was the strongest solo of the evening–and brilliant. She is SAFE. Nigel tells Kayla she is a favorite, but her solo tonight was static, not dancing from the heart. He tells Karla she is a very good dancer, but she hasn’t captured the star quality she had a the beginning. She is eliminated.

Now for the boys. Again, it’s a unanimous decision for the boys. Nigel tells Phillip he is “absolutely unique” and superb at what he does. But tonight, he thought his solo was a little desperate. He has a lot of hard work ahead of him in the coming weeks to master the other genres. He is safe. Nigel tells Vitolio he has great presence on stage, but he doesn’t deliver anything at the end of the day. He tells Kupono his solo was weak, that he expects more, and that’s what he’ll be expecting next week. Vitolio is eliminated. Asuka is in the audience getting a little teary. Vitolio tears up as he talks about the letters he got from people telling him he changed their lives.

So You Think You Can Dance 100th Episode Spoilers, Plus Who Is Going Home?

This was a week full of great dance performances on So You Think You Can Dance. If you ask me, nobody deserves to be in the Bottom 3, but of course, 2 dancers must go home. Who will it be?

After thinking about it, I picked Caitlin and Jason in the SYTYCD pool this week. They’ve been on the cusp for awhile, and I believe that other couple in trouble, Karla and Vitolio, both did enough to convince the judges to let them stick around for another week. I’ll be surprised if couples are split this week.

In other news, the SYTYCDism blog posted spoilers for the big July 23 100th episode show. Many old favs are coming back…hooray!

Travis Wall just tweeted that he is heading to CBS to film the Emmy-winning Bench piece with Heidi Groskreutz and Wade’s Ramalama group dance!

Jaimie Goodwin is also expected to be taping the Hummingbird Wade piece with Hok Konishi!

Also performing with Katie Holmes on the special episode will be Mark Kanemura and Joshua Allen.

I’ve also gotten word that Ivan Koumaev and Allison Holker will be appearing on the show, most likely performing in Ramalama.
