This post is by Andrew: die-hard Brewers fan and one of my favorite commenters of all time. He won our Home Run Derby Challenge contest, and since he's a writer, we gave him a post.
Batting Practice
It can be fun when you get in a groove. It can be awesome when you get a ball in the parking lot that can clear everything. It can also start fights if you see so many Happy Youngsters going after what's rightfully yours.

But only one night a year, Batting Practice takes it to the next level. ESPN takes control, and the mellifluous tones of Chris Berman and the general savvy of Joe Morgan take us to another place. State Farm gives us the Home Run Derby, and it allowed my giant Irish head to look as smart as it's been in a while!

For you see, I called it. Before the names were announced. Yeah, me. Give me a second.

Hear that sound? That's me patting myself on the back.

But for a full FIFTEEN MINUTES! I watched baseballs fly out of the park. And my guy! My guy! He had tied the game! I was excited!

But my heart...it just could not take the excitement. I had to change the channel to something less pulse pounding. And I missed the derby winner. Aren't I awesome?

So, yeah. The winner of the Babes Love Baseball contest won while watching exactly 15 minutes of it. Glorified practices announced by people who make my ears bleed and my head hurt are not high priority in the ol' parental basement.

I watched Pro Wrestling. Apparently Chris Jericho looks like the Hells Kitchen Guy now. And I won your baseball contest. What?

I am better than you. I am better than all of you. Especially Reggie. He stole my real pick. And that's why I won.

I'm going to take a victory lap!

-Andrew

Send me my hat and water bottle please.

Tomorrow night, Victor Martinez will take the field as the Indians lone member of the American League All-Star team. Last season in the Bronx, Cliff Lee started for the AL and pitched two solid innings, while striking out two batters. Grady Sizemore also participated going 1-for-5 and scoring a run in the American League’s 15-inning, 5-4 victory. This year will mark Martinez’s third appearance in the midsummer classic.

In his two previous appearances (2004 and 2007), Martinez recorded two total at-bats. But he will be remembered by Tribe fans for what he did during the 2007 matchup in San Francisco. With a slim 3-2 lead for the AL entering the 8th inning, Martinez came in to pinch hit for the pitcher’s slot, and promptly launched a two-run homer over the left field fence. This gave the American League a 5-2 lead, but also provided the deciding runs as the National League rallied in the bottom of the ninth to fall 5-4.

On the year, Martinez is batting .294 with 14 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 54 runs scored. With injuries to key players such as Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner, Victor has definitely had to pull more than just his own weight for the club this year. In such a trying season, Victor Martinez remains to be one of the bright spots for the fans, and the organization as a whole…hopefully for future seasons as well! Congrats, Victor!

There are no games tonight as the All-Star Break is upon us, but we do have the Home Run Derby, which is agonizingly still in the first round as I type this. Aside from Prince’s impressive first-round performance (11 bombs), which matched former Brewer Nelson Cruz, the most exciting part of the show thus far is a glimpse of ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews’ bruise that she got from a foul ball off the bat of New York Met Alex Cora. The incident was big news earlier this week, but I think this is the first time there is any visual evidence of the sideline princess’ wound.

The 27 y/o left handed hitting utility player has one more year of arbitration before he becomes a free agent.

This is almost starting to become a habit. Sunday afternoon I spent an hour with Joel Henard from Hoosier Fantasy Baseball Insider as he guest hosted the Johnny Archive Fantasy Baseball Show on Blogtalk Radio.

Jeff Erickson from RotoWire.com got things rolling for the first half of the show followed by yours truly heading into the second half of a two-hour show. We took the opportunity to review the latest edition of our weekly column The Wire Troll and discussed up and coming phenom Madison Bumgarner and the potential for Manny Parra to repeat his fine pitching performance from last week.

Lenny Melnick from FantasyPros911.com and Bob Sikon from FBTM.com joined in later on in the show and we got into a rather interesting discussion on auction leagues and the changing face of the game.

The full show can be heard here.

Since Omar Minaya took over the Mets after the 2004 season, he has traded approx. 53 players ( missing several PTBNL that I couldn't track down & some smaller deals), 19 of those players are currently on major league rosters ( indicated in bold) including the DL and only one has had an All-Star nomination since leaving ( Heath Bell).

Meanwhile, the Mets have acquired approx. 42 players ( again some PTNL maybe be missing and some smaller deals), 15 of them are either with the Mets or on another teams major league roster ( bold) including the DL and three of those players made the All Star team while with the Mets ( Delgado, Lo Duca, Santana).

When Omar was hired he had a reputation as a very aggressive GM who was willing to take risks. His early results, supported that reputation, as he was constantly wheeling and dealing. Now, I personally like an aggressive GM and am willing to accept the occasional mistakes. As long as the GM is a solid talent evaluator, which I believe Omar is, from my point of view the reward out weighs the risk.

But during the off-season of 2006, prior to the 2007 season, Omar made a series of three trades which have long been perceived as bad trades. In fact, many fans still clamour about these trades, as if the players lost were keys to our future.

While I agree that the Bannister and Bell trades turned out in favor of the other team, I hardly call either a Kazmir type of deal. At the time, the relievers traded were not seen to have futures in the organization or were injury risks and Bannister was pretty far down the depth charts, in regards to starters. In return the Mets thought they were getting a workhorse middle innings reliever ( Adkins), an upside outfielder (Johnson), a potential closer ( Burgos) and two young lefties ( Bostick, Vargas).

None of the trades seemed to work out in our favor and it seems like since those trades there has been a significant shift in the organizations approach. Since then the organization has been very Conservative, it has made five trades; Castillo, Santana, Ayala, J.J. Putz, and Schoeneweis (not including 2009). The deals made have been either blockbusters, due to injury out of absolute necessity or when they finally dismantled the pen.

Now, some will say that it's because Omar was finally satisfied with the roster and had used all the chips he deemed expendable from the prior GMs system.

But the team has had needs each season and the organization, since those three deals, seems reluctant, almost snake bitten to make a move. While I agree that the Bannister and Bell deals have turned out bad for the Mets, they are hardly moves that would change my philosophy. It almost feels like they need to shake off those deals and return to what seemed more successful, when they were more aggressive. Fans were brutal over those three deals, but I wouldn't consider those trades that significant and one of the deals I don't think you can call a failure anymore...

I think it's time that the Vargas/Bostick for Lindstrom/Owens trade be removed from the list of bad deals. The Mets were right about both Lindstrom and Owens, while having some success in Florida both have struggled with injuries and in addition to injuries, Owens also has been susp. for PED. Vargas never achieved much success with the Mets but he had enough value as a chip to be part of the J.J. Putz deal and was recently called up for a stint in Seattle's rotation. Bostick after several unsuccessful years as a starter is now making a great transition into the bullpen, in Buffalo he has 11 appearances with a 0.64 ERA, prior to that he made 11 appearances in AA with a 2.60 ERA.

If you agree with the a more aggressive GM, hopefully; Omar will be reminded of the intangible impacts of trades from the Castro and Francoeur deal. I feel it's no mistake that the team is 2-0 since the deal, and no, I don't believe Francoeur is an impact player who is carrying the team, but it's the energy of change, a spark and some new hope. As I've said before sometimes a team needs a trade just for trades sake, teams get stagnant and need a shake up...

As i've said before; I don't mind Omar being a gunslinger, in fact, I prefer it and if you look at his record he's pretty good at it, but the number of moves drastically dropped after those three deals and my issue is more with his recent conservatism...

Traded

2004-2005 -Mike Stanton, Vance Wilson, Ian Bladergroen, Jason Phillips, Pat Mahomes, Andy Dominique, Matt Ginter, Jed Hansen, Mike Cameron, Mike Jacobs, Yusmeiro Petit, Grant Psomas, Gaby Hernandez, Dante Brinkley

2006- Jae Wong Seo, Tim Hamulack, Kris Benson, Angel Pagan, Jorge Julio, Robert Manuel, Geremi Gonzalez, Kazuo Matsui, Jeff Keppinger, Xavier Nady, Evan MacLane, Victor Diaz, Heath Bell, Royce Ring, Henry Owens, Matt Lindstrom, Brian Bannister

2007- Dustin Martin, Drew Butera, Jose Castro, Sean Henry, Guillermo Mota, Lastings Milledge

2008 - Corey Coles, Ryan Meyers, Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, Anderson Hernandez, Scott Schoeneweis, Joe Smith, Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Jason Vargas, Mike Carp, Ezequiel Carrera and Maikel Cleto

2009- Ramon Castro, Ryan Church

Acquired

2004-2005 -Felix Heredia, Anderson Hernandez, Doug Mientkiewicz, Kazuhisa Ishii, Fernando Lunar, Benji Gil, Steve Colyer, Xavier Nady, Carlos Delgado, Tike Redman, Paul Lo Duca

2006-Duaner Sanchez, Steve Schmoll, Jorge Julio, John Maine, Orlando Hernandez, David Williams, Mike Adams, Eli Marrero, Ruben Gotay, Roberto Hernandez, Oliver Perez, Guillermo Mota, Shawn Green, Mike Nickeas, Jon Adkins, Ben Johnson, Adam Bostick, Jason Vargas, Ambiorix Burgos

2007- Luis Castillo, Chad Hermanson, Luis Matos, Jeff Conine, Johnny Estrada, Brian Stokes, Ryan Church, Brian Schneider

2008- Angel Pagan, Johan Santana, Trot Nixon, Luis Ayala, Conor Robertson

2009- Lance broadway, Jeff Frankcoeur

Are you happy with where your team is sitting in its division standings? Washington Nationals fans, feel free to ignore that question. The rest of you have four days rest to ponder.

Anyway, your All-Star starters have been named, and there's no surprise there. San Francisco Giants phenom Tim Lincecum (10-2, 2.33 ERA) will take the hill Tuesday night for the National League while Toronto Blue Jays righty Roy Halladay (10-3, 2.85 ERA) will start for the American League.

Little Timmy, who almost threw a no-no last week, didn't get to pitch in last year's Midsummer Classic since he was under the weather. Pretty sure starting this year will make up for that. He is tied for the big league lead with 149 strikeouts and leads the majors in adorableness.

This will also mark Doc's first All-Star start, but it's his sixth appearance. And judging from the rumor mill, it could be his last while sporting a Toronto uni. The 80th annual All-Star game will air on ESPN at 8pm ET. Make sure to swing on by Pyle of List for a MST3K liveblog experiment! It's gonna kick ass.

Also? This is just one of the many reasons we read RandBall.

[AP] | [Foul Territory] | [The Scores Report]

Originally I intended to write a normal, boring first-half wrapup, and to begin that piece I was going to briefly mention of all the injuries and unforeseen circumstances which have befallen the Angels this year.

After spending just a few moments listing all of these trials, it immediately became apparent that any explication of them would become an entity in and of itself: it’s hard to imagine things having gone much worse in Anaheim.

Nonetheless, it is July 13, the All Star break is upon us, and the Angels are in first place in the AL West with a record of 49-37, a game and a half better than the Texas Rangers. When one considers all the roadblocks that have already cropped up this season, this feat is borderline miraculous.

To appreciate just how improbable it is that the Halos currently find themselves atop the West, let’s look at everything that has gone wrong thus far, in no particular order:

-John Lackey: on March 15 the Angels get the news that their number one starter will miss at least the first month of the season. When Lackey finally does return on May 16, he lasts all of two pitches before being tossed from the game. Since, the impending free agent is inconsistent, giving up five or more runs in four of eleven starts for an ERA of 4.93

-Ervin Santana: early on in spring training the young All Star is diagnosed with a sprained elbow ligament. He returns a couple days before Lackey but makes only six starts before going back on the DL. Faring no better after coming off, Santana is largely ineffective even when healthy enough to compete, sporting a 7.81 ERA.

-Kelvim Escobar: diagnosed with a torn labrum in his shoulder during spring training '08, surgery causes him to miss the entire campaign. Despite the seriousness of the injury, his rehab progresses well and Escobar looks to join the team’s rotation in early 2009 before suffering a setback in April. After working his way back to the team and making a start on June 6, Escobar reports soreness in the shoulder and subdequently feels the same pain trying to play catch on flat ground weeks later. He remains on the DL.

-Nick Adenhart: a replacement for the aforementioned disabled pitchers, Adenhart dies April 9 in a tragic accident hours after throwing six shutout innings against the Oakland A’s in just the third game of the season. At the time of his death Adenhart is the youngest pitcher on an MLB roster.

-Vladimir Guerrero (part I): the lineup’s focal point goes down with a pectoral injury on April 16, eight games into the year. He subsequently misses 35 games but, like Santana, is a shell of his former self even when in the lineup. Despite showing signs of life before going down again (more on that later), Guerrero carries a .415 slugging percentage through the season’s first half.

-Jose Arredondo/Justin Speier/Jason Bulger/Kevin Jepsen: little needs to be said about this foursome. While all but Arredondo, who now finds himself in Salt Lake, show occasional effectiveness, the ERAs of the group are 4.38, 4.64, 5.55, and 9.00, respectively. Though Jepsen and Bulger in particular pitch better later on, Bulger’s giving up two home runs against the Yankees Saturday does nothing to bolster confidence in him, nor does Speier’s inability to get a single out Sunday. Simply put, the Angels never find a reliable bridge to Brian Fuentes.

-Scot Shields: probably never healthy at any point this season, Shields adds to the aforementioned bullpen woes by limping to a 6.62 ERA in 17.2 innings pitched before going down for good in ’09 due to the surgery needed to fix his recurring patellar tendinitis.

-Darren Oliver: the only Angels reliever all year, aside from Fuentes, to provide any actual relief, Oliver succumbs to a strained triceps after making a four-inning emergency start April 18. Luckily for the team, his stay on the DL is only just longer than the minimum 15 days.

-Howie Kendrick: the young second baseman, expected to contend for a batting title and be a key part of the Angels’ offense, hits so poorly that he is sent down to Salt Lake on June 13 after posting a .231 BAA to that point. In addition to his batter’s box flailings, Kendrick has numerous inexplicable defensive and baserunning lapses, compounding frustration with him.

-Bobby Abreu: while Abreu is generally one of the Angels’ best and most consistent performers in the first half, the slugger who came into the year with 11 consecutive seasons of at least 15 home runs (not to mention the epic 2005 Home Run Derby) takes 148 at bats -- 41 games -- to hit his first of 2009.

-Torii Hunter/Vladimir Guerrero (part II)/Juan Rivera: Guerrero and Hunter, the Angels’ 3 and 4 hitters, are added to the DL July 10, the Friday the team enters a 3 game set against the red hot New York Yankees. Rumors circulate that the pair could each miss a month. During the first game of this series, Rivera injures his quad and hamstring running the bases and is pulled a couple innings later, forcing the team to play the remainder of the weekend without the entire middle of their lineup.

--

Take all this in.

While such turmoil would destroy any other team, the Angels have thrived and find themselves in position to capture their third consecutive Division Championship. Every time one player goes down, another steps up his game to ensure the team doesn’t miss a beat.

This may not be the Angels’ finest season but, thus far, it is undoubtedly their most impressive in recent years. Every challenge has been met with unparalleled grit and heart, and Mike Scioscia’s one day at a time approach:

True Angels Baseball.

--Zach Stoloff
zachariahmrs@gmail.com

The results during the chat were: 5 (15%); 4 (31%); 3 (38%); 2 (15%); 1 (0%).

Now that we’ve had a few weeks to digest the players taken in the draft, and, we’ve seen many of them signed, it’s time to revisit the draft to see how well we did. Before we do, though, it’s important to review what the Angels were trying to accomplish in this year’s draft.

With 5 of the first 48 picks, the Angels knew that they had an opportunity to setup the organization for the next 5 years or more. While their highest pick was 24th, they knew that they had several needs to address. And, with their first pick being the 24th overall, the odds of them catching a no-brainer type player such as Strasburg were almost non-existent. While the Angels are known for taking high-risk/high-reward type players, this year they knew they needed to focus on their core needs and strengths.

Given the choice, Eddie Bane and the Angels would prefer to draft a high school player over an equally rated college player. There are many reasons for this, including the belief that a similarly ranked high school player has more upside than the college player since he’s still maturing compared to the college player. Additionally, there is the notion that getting a player out of high school allows the Angels to develop in the Angels mold for a longer period of time.

Finally, the Angels believe that it is cheaper and easier to develop a quality pitcher than it is to sign one. The combination of the cost of signing a front-line pitcher and the risk of injury to that pitcher over a multi-year contract is much greater than trying to develop the talent within the organization. While the Angels have plenty of pitching in the minors (as the weekly Hot Prospect Lists can attest), as this season shows, you can never have too much pitching.

So, with their first two picks, the Angels went right after their needs. They drafted two premium high-school hitters with power: Randal Grichuk and Mike Trout. Both play the OF, and both have great track records for hitting with power. Both were ranked in the Top-10 for HS prospects and were considered rising stars. Both have been signed and are off to good starts as they make the transition to professional baseball.

After addressing their most pressing needs, the Angels went right back to their core strength: pitching. With their next 5 picks they took only pitchers. They went heavily after left-handers, with 4 of those picks being left-handed. They mostly went after college pitchers here, but did choose another high school prospect, Tyler Skaggs, with their 3rd pick in the 1st round. He’s got a plus curve and 92-93 mph fastball who reminds scouts of a young Barry Zito. He has yet to sign, but we’re hopeful that he does.

Things were moving along very smoothly when the Angels made a surprising pick befitting of their high-risk/high-reward philosophy. They drafted Jake Locker in the 10th round. He’s the starting QB for the Huskies. Although he sees himself primarily as a football player the Angels are willing to take a chance that baseball becomes a fallback career option. Scouts for many teams rave about his baseball skills. Hopefully the Angels can ink a deal with Locker that preserves everyone’s interests.

After the 10th round, things settled into a routine as the Angels drafted a variety of players and positions with no discernable pattern. Two notable later round picks include James Mallard (18th round) and Alibay Barkley (50th round). Both are big guys who play 1B and can mash the ball. Both draw comparisons to players like Prince Fielder and Ryan Howard.

In the amateur draft, every major league team is hoping to get at least 1 player who has at least a 5 year career in the majors. For most teams, that’s a solid draft. Let’s establish that as a rating of a “4” since that is still the hope of every club. Teams that let other factors such as signability affect their draft or failed to address their organization as a whole should earn lower ratings while those that appear to exceed that standard deserve higher.

In evaluating this draft, I’d give it a solid “5” so far. We targeted our needs (sluggers) and went after them. We knew our strengths (pitching) and drafted for it. With the way that Grichuk, Trout, Alibay and Barkley have started, it appears that they will be good players for a long time.

At the same time, we did not let money issues affect who we drafted or how we drafted. We took a shot at a very high-risk/high reward type. While no one unexpected slipped to us like Weaver did in 2005 (which might have given this a 5+ rating) my initial reaction to this draft is very positive. I believe that one or more of the hitters will make it in the majors as impact players and one or more of the pitchers will too, especially if the Angels are able to land pitchers like Skaggs.

Over the next few years, it will be fun to watch how these guys pan out to see if this draft deserves an even higher rating. It will be fun trying to work these players into our Top-50 Prospect list next year. For now, kudos should go to Eddie Bane and to all of his staff that made it happen. Good draft.

As if it mattered to Tribe fans, the All-Star Break is now upon us, and the Indians are still in last place…and worst in the American League. Barring something that happens in the movies, such as Major League (parts I or II), this season will go down like several others in Cleveland sports lore…a huge disappointment.

Sunday afternoon, the Indians (a microscopic 13 games out of first place) tussled with AL Central leading Detroit. The Tigers demolished Cleveland 10-1 in the rubber match to win the series.

As if facing Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander wasn’t enough to dampen the Indians lumber a bit, Detroit put up a combined 9 runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. Tiger rightfielder Clete Thomas, replacing Magglio Ordonez, homered, tripled, and singled on the day to drive in half of the Detroit’s runs. He also scored two of his own. All-Star third baseman (and Home Run Derby participant come Monday) Brandon Inge hit two homers, driving in three runs. Not to be left out, Marcus Thames had a sparkling day at the plate as he went 4-for-4 with an RBI.

Justin Verlander (10-4) recorded the win while pitching seven strong innings, striking out eight, and only surrendering five hits and three walks.

On the flip side, Grady Sizemore was the only Indian to have a multiple hit afternoon, with two. The lone All-Star from Cleveland, Victor Martinez, went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Starting pitcher Tomo Ohka (0-3) only lasted 3 2/3 innings while giving up five earned runs, aided by two long balls. The bullpen didn’t fare much better, but little was left in doubt at that point.

After the game, Ohka stated, “My fastball was up. I felt OK, but I kept making bad pitches.” Last I checked, leaving a fastball up in the zone usually doesn’t make any pitcher feel okay.

Eric Wedge countered with: “It’s been a disappointment. There’s a long way to go, and I still feel good about the lineup we are putting out there every day, but we’ve got to improve the rotation and our bullpen.”

Really Eric?

Even though the Giants couldn't complete the 4-game sweep of the Padres on Sunday, they still took 3 of 4 from San Diego, and enter the all-star break with the second best record in the National League at 49-39.

Once again, it was the starting pitching that paved the way for the Giants in the Padres series. Although it's kind of old news by now, we didn't get a chance to touch on Jonathan Sanchez's no-hitter Friday Night yet, and I wanted to do so. Sanchez was bounced from the Giants rotation at the end of June, do to his struggles at finding the strike-zone, but he went to the bullpen for a few weeks and had a couple of really nice outings in relief. He showed enough improvement to where Bruce Bochy felt comfortably inserting him back into the rotation in Randy Johnson's spot, and he did he best impression of "The Big Unit", no-hitting the Padres and striking out 10 batters in the process. Almost as impressive as the no-hits though, was the goose egg in the walk column. Sanchez has been averaging about 5 walks per 9 innings pitched, and that was really the area which was getting him into trouble. If fact, it was the only time this year in which Sanchez pitched 4 or more innings without allowing at least 3 walks. Only a booted ground ball by Juan Uribe cost the 26 year-old lefty the perfect game. Sanchez was probably also feeding off of Tim Lincecum's brilliant start from the night before. Lincecum carried a no-no into the seventh inning on Thursday night, but unraveled a bit in the 7th and ended up being removed from the game before he could get out of it. Nonetheless, taking away Zito's start on Sunday, the Giants pitching staff, both starting and relief, was nearly untouchable for most of the weekend.

Even though the Giants are really playing good baseball right now, and are one of the hottest teams in the league over the last 6 weeks, there are a lot of players on the roster who could use a three-day rest. Edgar Renteria, Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand are a few guys who have been playing a ton, and not taking many days off. Molina got a few days off in the Padres series in addition to the upcoming 3 day break, so Bengie should be nice and rested for the second half. Renteria's only had one day off over the last 15 games, and his average is starting to take a bit of a dip because of it. Rowand is the type of guy who will fight Bochy to stay in the lineup everyday, so the all-star break is about the only time that Boch can give him a rest without having Rowand in his ear about it. The Giants actually are off on Thursday as well, so their all-star break is essentially 4 days long, although they will be traveling to Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Update on Cain: Matt Cain, who was selected to his first all-star game last week, took a line drive off the right-elbow in the second inning of his start on Saturday, and his status for the all-star game is looking doubtful right now. The X-rays revealed no break or fracture, and the injury is being classified as a bruise at the moment, but its going to be swollen and stiff for a couple of days, and due to the fact that it's on his pitching arm, likely means he'll be unavailable to pitch for the National League on Tuesday. Cain will still make the trip to St. Louis and hopefully he'll still get to enjoy everything else. Either way, the Giants don't think the injury will keep him from missing any starts at the beginning of the second half, although they may re-align the rotation and have him start the fifth game after the break, which would give him about 10 days in-between starts.

Mike Burns has pitched OK for the Brewers as a fill-in starter, but he’s not the long-term answer for the rotation and a major trade acquisition for the starting rotation might be a pipe dream. Luckily, however, we do have one roster addition to look forward to. Dave Bush should be returning from the DL relatively soon.

Bush made a rehab start for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday and gave up four hits over 4 2/3 innings. His command was great as he threw 43 of his 55 pitches for strikes. He collected five strike outs and no walks in the game. Bush will make one more rehab start, most likely with Huntsville, and the Brewers hope to have him back for the July 20 game against Pittsburgh.

Bush has struggled for much of the season this year, but he had a 4.18 ERA in 185 innings last year, and he will be a big addition to the club if he can pitch like he did in 2008.

One of the 5,433 fans to attend the game at Fox Cities Stadium was frequent RFB commenter D’Amico’s one good year and he sent some photos of Bush from the game over to us for you all to check out:

The way Madison Bumgarner is handling Double-A suggests the majors can’t be far away for this young phenom.

It is that time of the year again, with the mid-season classic just around the corner, and the Futures Game, Home Run Derby and the game itself are events that should not be missed. Enjoy the festivities, but don’t relax too much as we are entering a very volatile period of time in baseball with the trading deadline fast approaching. The contenders and pretenders over the next several weeks will be sorting themselves out and making the required moves to shore up their weaknesses heading into the stretch run. One doesn’t want to be caught off guard from a Fantasy perspective as it can certainly either make or break one’s chances to claim victory.

Without further ado let’s take a look at this weeks recommendations.

Madison Bumgarner, SP, San Francisco Giants: The Giants are in the process of building one of the finest starting rotations in the game, and the next piece to that puzzle was recently promoted to Double-A Connecticut. Bumgarner, a 19-year-old phenom, has made the move without skipping a beat. Since the promotion he has a stellar 1.74 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 57 IP. That’s not too shabby for a kid that doesn’t turn 20 until August 1 of this year. He should be rostered in all keeper formats and a guy that everyone should be watching for down the road.

Guillermo Mota, RP, Los Angeles Dodgers: Jonathan Broxton is hurting with a toe injury and it appears that the cortisone injection he got back in mid-June has not gotten the job done. This explains the five earned runs Broxton has allowed in his past two outings. Joe Torre has given the All-Star the weekend off and Mota has temporarily been handed the job of closer for the Dodgers. Mota has been on a roll and toe injuries can be notoriously slow to heal, so an investment in Mota is a solid move in all formats for those Fantasy squads in search of saves.

Drew Stubbs, OF, Cincinnati Reds: The injury to Jay Bruce Saturday is being reported as a fractured right wrist, but we are still waiting for a timeline as to how long he’ll be missing from the lineup. The Reds have already announced that Stubbs would be the first guy they look at to replace Bruce in the lineup. Can you imagine an outfield consisting of Chris Dickerson, Willy Taveras, and Drew Stubbs? Not a lot of power potential out of that lot. Stubbs has managed 33 stolen bases at Triple-A Louisville with very little in the way of power. Jonny Gomes, who has stepped up his game recently, could also figure into the mix for increased playing time. If you’re looking at gambling in the stolen base category, Stubbs should be rostered awaiting, of course, further news on the Bruce situation.

John Grabow, RP, Pittsburgh Pirates: Matt Capps turned a non-save situation into a loss Saturday with one of the ugliest outings of his career. He allowed six hits, two walks, and was charged with five earned runs in one-third of an inning. Capps has already suffered through minor discomfort in his right elbow this season and missed some time at the end of May while missing seven weeks with bursitis and internal rotational deficit last summer. It appears that a trend has developed and Grabow is next in line for saves for the Pirates and a solid addition in all formats.

Kyle Lohse, SP, St. Louis Cardinals: Lohse has been sidelined since June 3 with a forearm strain and is scheduled to return to the rotation Sunday against the Cubs. In his last rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Memphis, he tossed six innings of two-hit ball, allowing no runs with six strikeouts. Lohse is pitching for a solid offensive club that will give him the opportunity to win every time he takes the hill. If he’s available in your league, now is the time to make a move.

Josh Willingham, OF, Washington Nationals: In his past 10 games, Willingham has hit three homers, driven in 10 runs, swiped two bags and, more importantly, is playing on a regular basis. The former Marlin has always had the potential to be a strong force with the stick, but with his defensive skills he is probably more suited to life in the AL as a DH. Are the Nationals showcasing Willingham as potential trade material? Elijah Dukes is at Triple-A Syracuse and Austin (lack of powers) Kearns is currently riding the pine and this should guarantee solid opportunities for both Willingham and your Fantasy squad to boost those power numbers in the immediate future.

Jose Contreras, SP, Chicago White Sox: A horrendous start to the 2009 campaign had many wondering if this might possibly be the end of the road for Contreras. He was sent to Triple-A Charlotte to get his game back on track and since being recalled at the beginning of June has pitched like the Contreras of old. In 43 2/3 IP, he has allowed only 10 earned runs and in his past three starts has an amazing 25/3 K-to-BB ratio. It is time to start believing and get him rostered in all formats.

Manny Parra, SP, Milwaukee Brewers: Those 42 walks in 64 2/3 IP pretty well tells the story for the poor start to the 2009 campaign for Parra and his subsequent demotion to Triple-A Nashville. He was recalled this past week and on Thursday, against a strong offensive club (the Cardinals), he allowed only three hits, one walk and racked up seven strikeouts with no earned runs in seven IP. It’s all about limiting the walks for Parra. The 147 strikeouts in 166 IP in 2008 had a lot of Fantasy owners anticipating a potential break-out year for the 26-year-old southpaw this season. Parra is certainly worthy of a pick up in NL-only leagues and should be on the radar in mixed formats.

Edwin Encarnacion, 3B, Cincinnati Reds: This situation caught me completely off guard. Encarnacion was sidelined for May and June with a wrist fracture and is currently available in nearly 60 per cent of the leagues playing at CBS. He returned this past week and hit a three-run homer Thursday against the Phillies. This is the same 26-year-old that hit 26 long balls in 2008. It’s worth a quick scan to see if he’s out there on your league waiver wire and, if so, make a move and get him rostered quick.
