On a side note, the biggest problem with the Android App store would appear to be the payment mechanism. The free apps are doing extremely well with in the 100,000's of downloads in their app store. However, the most successful paid apps are only experiencing a few thousand downloads.

By having to have a google checkout account, most are just walking away. Apple makes it easy with the iTunes store. Android has to find a simpler way to process billing. They can't just assume that everyone wanting a $2.99 download will take the time to set up a new account with them. This is simple not worth it to most folks.

A key to having microsourcing in telework scale up in poor areas may be to target the initial offers on communities that take steps toward self-funding uplift. Bundling microscholarships, online work-study opportunities, and telework "challenge offers" can spark local awakenings of dormant land and human capital. Visuals and background on this approach are here --

Openworld has some microscholarship funds available -- would welcome exploring ways to target these for market-sensitive grassroots ventures affiliated with TxtEagle and kindred intiatives such as TheExtraordinaries.

Well let's see:

30,000 apps
30 million iPhone and iPod Touch owners (as of the end of 2008)
800 million apps downloaded (as of Dec 2008)
Average of 27 apps per iPhone/iPod Touch owner

So that means an average ratio of 27,000 customers per app. Doesn't sound like a bad ratio to me.

Considering there have been 7x more iPhone apps downloaded in six months than the entire rest of the mobile industry gets in a year, I think the iPhone developer community is onto a pretty good thing.

I certainly haven’t heard of any Windows Mobile, Symbian or Blackberry developers becoming millionaires on the back of a couple of month’s sales.

To complain about the 30% cut is to show your ignorance. Just three years ago 40% to 60% was the norm and 80% wasn't unheard of. Apple changed everything.

Hands down the iPhone is easy to develop for and is a very strong platform in and of itself. The 30% tax is bollocks too because all the me too stores which are opening up for the other machines are all taking about the same percentage. Remember that before the iphone and the App Store you'd have to set up a store and a payment process to deal with your customers and unless you are a very big company covering those overheads would cost you a lot more.

It doesn't really work like that - really good apps win through either by word of mouth or by generally getting themselves noticed.

Be a moaner - it's much easier to do that than to actually get involved.
