In light of Liquid's victory in the Race to World First: Midnight Season 1, Maximum and Scott interviewed Senior Game Designer Anthony Trejo and Lead Encounter Designer Taylor Sanders.

Belo'ren P3 Design Expectations

The original design aimed for mechanics to continuously ramp up, including a fourth wave of echoes and more intense healer debuffs affecting the entire raid.
After QA testing, these ideas were scaled back as they proved too much of a challenge. The final version instead frontloads difficulty at the start, with less escalation over time.
The encounter was designed to be completed on the third egg, with a berserk timer enforcing this.
The two-egg strategy used by Liquid was not anticipated and was made possible by Augmentation Evoker tech. Devs saw this as a creative and valid way to skip a phase.

Mythic L'ura & Encounter Journal

Based on internal testing, Blizzard expected players to take advantage of the crystal's extra time at the end of Phase 3 of L'ura. However, Liquid's damage ended up higher than expected to the point where they were able to skip this.
The Encounter Journal is intended as a guide, especially for lower difficulties, rather than a fully detailed breakdown of every mechanic.
Blizzard has experimented with making Mythic level mechanics more ambiguous, encouraging discovery and experimentation.
High end players tend to enjoy figuring things out through trial and error, making this approach well suited for Mythic content.
Secret phases and key narrative moments are often intentionally hidden to preserve surprise, similar to past encounters such as Illidan's appearance at the end of Mythic Gul'dan.

Visual Clarity

Visual clarity remains a major focus, with significant iteration to ensure mechanics are clearly readable and proportional to their importance.
Ground effects like swirlies and damage zones are being refined for better consistency and reuse.
The Lightblinded Vanguard encounter visuals are differentiated similarly to the Demon Hunter class. Each Paladin spec uses distinct color palettes: blue for Protection, red/orange for Retribution and yellow for Holy.
Blizzard is looking to apply similar visual differentiation to council bosses in the future, in order to help players distinguish targets.

Encounter Journal (Continued)

Not every mechanic is fully detailed in the Encounter Journal and this is by design.
The goal is to provide players with enough information to understand and solve encounters, without turning the journal into an encyclopedia.
Boss abilities like Grim Symphony reflect this philosophy, requiring players to learn through gameplay.

Healer Design Philosophy

The focus has shifted toward moment-to-moment decision making rather than raid cooldown planning.
Encounters now favor steady incoming damage over frequent burst damage spikes.
The team wants to see more classic "triage" gameplay moments, with mechanics like damage-over-time effects and healing absorption debuffs.

L'ura Secret Phase Reaction during RWF

Blizzard closely monitored the Race to World First and anticipated the secret phase as a key moment.
Initially, they assumed top guilds knew about it, but as teams pushed bosses to near 0% without triggering it, it became clear they did not.
This created an unexpected and impactful reveal, making the moment more memorable than a typical secret phase.
The team was very satisfied with how it played out.

Encounter Tuning & Nerf Considerations

Boss tuning is achieved through extensive analysis of player capabilities across different item levels.
Continuous playtesting with QA teams helps refine difficulty and ensure targets are met.
This iterative process builds confidence in encounter balance before release.
Some encounters, such as L'ura's Phase 1, raised concerns internally due to difficulty.
Blizzard considered additional nerfs, especially given the length of the fight and the secret phase.
Ultimately, they aimed to balance consistency and challenge without removing meaningful difficulty or invalidating player strategies.
While further nerfs were underway, top players managed to overcome the challenge as designed.

Sporefall Raid & Mythic Flex Difficulty in Patch 12.0.7

The upcoming Sporefall raid will be more approachable and feature a single boss encounter.
A Mythic flex system (15-25 players) will be introduced for this raid, making Mythic difficulty more accessible.
The goal is to help Heroic guilds transition into Mythic content and take on greater challenges.

Decor Duel: Prop Hunt Game Mode Overview and Rewards
Patch 12.0.5 brings Decor Duel, a new prop hunt game mode in World of Warcraft. Here's an overview of the gameplay and the rewards players can earn from participating in this world event.

What is Decor Duel?
Decor Duel is a fast paced hide and seek game mode set in Silvermoon City. Two teams face off over two rounds, with each team playing once as hiders and once as seekers.

How to Win?

Seekers win by tagging all hiders before time runs out.
If at least one hider survives, the hiding team wins the round.
If both teams get the same result, the winner is decided by total hiding time.
For example, if your team collectively hides for 6 minutes and the other team hides for 5 minutes, you win.

Hider Abilities

Disguise - Disguise yourself as another Prop.
Swap - Swap locations with a nearby Decor.
Trap - Cast one of the following traps:
- Trap: Song Bird - If no Seeker is within 30 yards, you toss a Summon Song Bird Decoy container within 5 yards of your current position. If there is at least one Seeker within 30 yards, you lob a Summon Song Bird Decoy container near the position of the closest Seeker to you.
- Trap: Sands of Time - Lays a Sands of Time area that persists for 1.5 min, applying Time Distortion to Seekers passing through it, slowing them down. Casting this while you have a Sands area active already will move that area to your current location and reset its duration. A second Sands of Time area is not created.
- Trap: Void Sphere - Creates a Void Sphere that persists for 30 sec. The sphere behaves differently for Hiders and Seekers. Hiders who make contact with the sphere are propelled forwards up to 30 yards. Seekers who make contact with the sphere are repelled backwards up to 20 yards.
- Trap: Smoke & Mirrors - Applies the effects of Disguise. Releases a number of prop decoys running in random directions for 15 sec. Blinks you between 10 and 20 feet away. Removes the Found condition and puts you back into a hidden state.
Eccentro-Magic Pulse - Stuns nearby Seekers. You become Found.
Make Decoy - Conjure a trapped decoy of your Decor.

Seeker Roles
Seekers can choose one of three roles: Arcane Ranger, Nullifier or Spellbreaker. All roles share the basic Tag! ability, along with their own unique set of skills.

Arcane Ranger Abilities

Anti-Magic Arrow - Dispel the illusions of Hiders in an area, marking them Found.
Clockwork Sentinel - Put up a Sentinel for 30 sec that applies Found and slows within the area when entered.
Stealth - Cannot be detected from a distance. Movement speed reduced by 30%.

Nullifier Abilities

Nullify Magic - Dispel the illusions of hiders in an area in front of you, marking them Found.
Nullification Field - Dispel the illusions of spellcasters in an area, marking them Found.
Riftwalk - Teleport a short distance.

Spellbreaker Abilities

Dispelling Focus - Dispel the illusions of spellcasters in front of you over 2.5 sec, marking them Found.
Dispelling Leap - Jump to a location, dispelling the illusions of spellcasters around the area of impact.
Swift - Spellbreaker's move speed increased by 30%.

Note that some abilities are unlocked through upgrades purchased with Illusionary Coins from Gamesmaster Fleurian.

Engage in new activities, experience more of the story in Midnight, and earn more loot as the efforts to push back the forces of the Void and their agents continue. You’ll undertake new Void Assaults, disrupt powerful Ritual Sites, get a boost with Voidforge, group up for Decor Duels, and more.

Stave Off Void Assaults

The forces of the Void are vying for position and control amongst themselves in a bid for more power. As they seek every opportunity they can, attacks begin in the Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman zones. [LEARN MORE]

Void Strike

Void Strikes take part in Eversong Woods or Zul’Aman on a weekly rotation. Once completed, a new one will begin in another part of the zone and continue to rotate through the zones.

Void Incursion

These larger scenarios occur when enough Void Strikes have been completed in the zones and will take the might of many of Azeroth’s champions to defeat them.

Disrupt Ritual Sites

Put a stop to rituals meant to empower the ambitions of power-hungry naga and Twilight’s Blade cultists in small one to five player instances. As you take on greater challenges, you’ll be able to receive greater rewards.

In Ritual Sites, you’ll choose some of the challenges you’ll face as you climb through the tiers. Players will also unlock Great Vault rewards for the World content row alongside Delves and Prey.

Players will earn Field Accolades from both Void Assaults and Ritual Sites as currency they can use to purchase Champion and Heroic quality gear and rewards. [LEARN MORE]

GET A LEG UP WITH THE VOIDFORGE

The Voidforge will provide new opportunities for players in Midnight to take their game further. You’ll help aid domanaar Decimus build a Voidforge to begin transmuting Nebulous Voidcores, which are transmutable into powerful equipment upon defeating powerful foes in Midnight Season 1 raids or completing Mythic+ dungeons, and Bountiful Delves and Prey Hunts on Nightmare difficulty.

After unlocking the Voidforge, Decimus will require additional assistance to craft the Ascendant Nilhammer, allowing players to upgrade their weapons and trinkets to new heights by collecting Ascendant Voidcores.

Nebulous Voidcore

Players can use Nebulous Voidcores to more easily obtain specific equipment whether they're chasing best-in-slot items on their main character or looking to quickly gear up their alternate characters later in the season.

Upon defeating a Midnight Season 1 raid boss or completing a Mythic+ Dungeon, Bountiful Delve, or Prey Hunt on Nightmare difficulty, players may choose to spend their Nebulous Voidcores to receive a random item appropriate for their Loot Specialization from that activity. After receiving an item in this way, it is removed from that loot pool until all eligible items have been obtained on a per-difficulty basis. For example, receiving the Ranger-Captain's Iridescent Insignia trinket from the Crown of the Cosmos encounter in the Voidspire on Normal difficulty will not remove it from consideration on Heroic or Mythic difficulty. The item level of Mythic+ rewards from Nebulous Voidcores is equivalent to Great Vault rewards from that Keystone level, i.e., Myth 1/6 at Keystone level +10 and above.

Decimus will offer Nebulous Voidcores to the player in exchange for a choice of valuable resources including gold, Voidlight Marl, and Veteran Dawncrests. The total number of Nebulous Voidcores available to a character increases by two every week for the remainder of the season. Due to the smaller loot pools and the exceptional power of raid items, these rewards will require two Nebulous Voidcores upon defeating a raid boss. Other endgame content, such as Mythic+, will cost only one. As a result, acquiring a particularly desired trinket, weapon, or ring is likely to require a similar total of Nebulous Voidcores regardless of source. For example, a player chasing a trinket from a raid boss with three total items matching their Loot Specialization is likely to receive that trinket in the same amount of time it would take to acquire a trinket from a Mythic+ dungeon with six total items.

Players can also purchase a Nebulous Voidcore from Vaultkeeper Elysa for six Thalassian Tokens of Merit. Nebulous Voidcores acquired in this way do not count against the weekly increasing cap.

Ascendant Voidcore

Following the Voidforge's construction, Decimus will ask players to assist him in crafting the Ascendant Nilhammer, a powerful tool capable of manipulating Ascendant Voidcores to empower worthy equipment. Upon completing this warband-wide journey, players may begin acquiring Ascendant Voidcores from Midnight Season 1 endgame content including raids, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare difficulty Prey Hunts.

Consuming an Ascendant Voidcore infuses an eligible weapon or trinket with additional power to increase its item level. Only fully upgraded Hero, Myth and maximum quality Radiance Crafted weapons and trinkets are eligible to become Ascendant Voidforged.

Hide Or Seek With Decor Duels

Amidst all the danger that swirls above Azeroth, there’s something to be said about having a little fun. Players can join in a team vs team hide-and-seek style game taking place in Silvermoon City through the Group Finder Tool (PvP tab) to either hide as various Housing decor items or seek out those who have donned the guise of an item. You’ll earn new rewards, including a mount, toys, and Housing decor, through this bite-sized event. [LEARN MORE]

New Activity: Abyss Anglers

Dive deep into the shimmering waters off Zul'Aman's rugged coast, where schools of exotic fish swarm just beneath the surface in a new repeatable event—Abyss Anglers. Team up to spear as many as you can and rack up points to unlock fishing rewards and upgrades to your diver gear, allowing you to venture deeper into the abyss where the greatest treasures await.

Seek out Depthdiver Jeju to suit up and enter the Depths. Zip through whirlpools, catch creatures with your harpoon, and discover treasures amidst the underwater steam vents.

Prove your mastery to earn dive equipment upgrades and cosmetics.

Achievements

Fixed an issue where players who already owned the Sun Darter Hatchling pet were not receiving Mind-Seeker progress and were required to loot the pet again.

- Frost
  - Chosen of Frostbrood (Rank 3) has been updated – When Frostwyrm's Fury is recalled, it now grants the full Haste bonus at 50% duration instead. The ability used to recall Frostwyrm’s Fury is no longer on the global cooldown.
  - Deathbringer
    - Echoing Fury secondary effect has been redesigned – Casting Reaper's Mark grants 1 stack of Exterminate with 100% first scythe and 100% second scythe effectiveness.
    - Exterminate has been updated – After Reaper's Mark explodes, your next 2 Obliterates or Frostscythes cost 1 Rune and summon 2 scythes to strike the enemies. The rest of the effect remains the same.
- Unholy
  - New Talent: Cycle of Death – Putrefy reduces the cooldown of Death and Decay by 1 second. Death and Decay reduces the cooldown of Putrefy by 0.3 seconds for each enemy it damages, up to 3 seconds.
  - Raise Abomination has been updated – Disease Cloud no longer causes enemies to take increased damage from minions. Now deals Plague damage periodically to nearby enemies.
  - Putrid Echoes has an additional effect – Putrefy now consumes up to 2 available charges on cast.
  - Lesser Ghoul damage reduced by 17%.
  - Scourge Strike now applies Virulent Plague in addition to spreading it.
  - Pestilence renamed to Blightfall and now overrides Dark Transformation instead of Outbreak.
  - Necrotic Coil's Shadowstrike damage now prefers the primary target.

  - Meteorite projectile damage reduced by 30%.
- Feral
  - Unseen Predator (Rank 1) now has an additional effect – Unseen Attack damage is reduced if less than 5 combo points and 50 Energy are spent on Ferocious Bite.
  - Unseen Predator (Rank 2) has been updated – Unseen Attacks increase your damage done by 8%/15% for 1 second per combo point spent to trigger it. Additional applications extend this effect.
  - Unseen Predator (Rank 3) has been updated – Tiger's Fury causes you to perform an Unseen Attack for maximum damage after your next 2 combo point generating attacks. Rip and Unseen Attack damage increased by 30%.
  - Unseen Slash and Unseen Swipe base damage increased by 25%.
- Guardian

- Developers' notes: As a side effect of squishing stats and item levels, Deftness scaled disproportionately faster than other professions stats, making it trivial to reach 100%+ Deftness in Dragonflight and Khaz Algar professions. This change brings Deftness back in line to expected values.

User Interface And Accessibility

Now you can shift click a feature's checkbox in Edit Mode to enable the feature directly. This applies to features including Cooldown Manager, Damage Meter, Boss Warnings, External Defensives, and Loot Window.

Building the Voidforge

Meet domanaar Decimus at the Howling Ridge in Voidstorm to undertake your first quest for him, “Building the Voidforge”. You’ll need to collect Elemental Voidcore Shards from Midnight Season 1 raid bosses, Bountiful Delves, and Mythic+ dungeons to begin construction.

You’ll need six Elemental Voidcores in order to complete its construction and will be able to track your progress when you visit Decimus.

Nebulous Voidcores

Players can use Nebulous Voidcores to more easily obtain specific equipment whether you are chasing best-in-slot items on your main character or looking to quickly gear up alternate characters later in the season.

Upon defeating a Midnight Season 1 raid boss or completing a Mythic+ Dungeon, Bountiful Delve, or Prey Hunt on Nightmare difficulty, players may choose to spend their Nebulous Voidcores to receive a random item appropriate for their Loot Specialization from that activity. After receiving an item in this way, it is removed from that loot pool until all eligible items have been obtained on a per-difficulty basis.

Example: Receiving the Ranger-Captain's Iridescent Insignia trinket from the Crown of the Cosmos encounter in the Voidspire on Normal difficulty will not remove it from consideration on Heroic or Mythic difficulty. The item level of Mythic+ rewards from Nebulous Voidcores is equivalent to Great Vault rewards from that Keystone level, i.e., Myth 1/6 at Keystone level +10 and above.

Decimus will offer Nebulous Voidcores to the player in exchange for a choice of valuable resources including gold, Voidlight Marl, and Veteran Dawncrests. The total number of Nebulous Voidcores available to a character increases by two every week for the remainder of the season. Due to the smaller loot pools and the exceptional power of raid items, these rewards will require two Nebulous Voidcores upon defeating a raid boss. Other endgame content, such as Mythic+, will cost only one. As a result, acquiring a particularly desired trinket, weapon, or ring is likely to require a similar total of Nebulous Voidcores regardless of source. For example, a player chasing a trinket from a raid boss with three total items matching their Loot Specialization is likely to receive that trinket in the same amount of time it would take to acquire a trinket from a Mythic+ dungeon with six total items.

Players can also purchase a Nebulous Voidcore from Vaultkeeper Elysa for six Thalassian Tokens of Merit. Nebulous Voidcores acquired in this way do not count against the weekly increasing cap.

Ascendant Voidcores

Following the Voidforge's construction, Decimus will ask players to assist him in crafting the Ascendant Nilhammer, a powerful tool capable of manipulating Ascendant Voidcores to empower worthy equipment. Upon completing this warband-wide journey, players may begin acquiring Ascendant Voidcores from Midnight Season 1 endgame content including raids, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare difficulty Prey Hunts.

Consuming an Ascendant Voidcore infuses an eligible weapon or trinket with additional power to increase its item level. Only fully upgraded Hero, Myth and maximum quality Radiance Crafted weapons and trinkets are eligible to become Ascendant Voidforged.

These changes are intended to increase the viability of a caster-oriented playstyle which involves applying damage over time effects and using Starfire, Wrath, and Starsurge.
- Wrath damage increased by 40%.
- Starfire damage increased by 40%.
- Starsurge damage increased by 40%.
- Sunfire damage increased by 25%.
- Moonfire damage increased by 25%.

Evoker

Preservation
- All healing reduced by 5%. This does not apply to PvP combat.
- Verdant Embrace mana cost reduced by 27%.

- All healing reduced by 5%.
- Sheilun’s Gift’s healing is increased by 5% per cloud consumed (was 10%).

- Atonement now causes spell damage to heal all targets affected by Atonement for 28% of damage done (was 35%). Does not apply to PvP combat.

We would like to maintain their identity of pushing the pace of games through adding damage and impactful rush-down utility, but their ability to trade cooldowns and their mana efficiency is more effective than we would like.
- Mana Tea now restores 50% less mana in PvP combat.
- Life Cocoon’s absorb amount reduced by 25% in PvP combat.
- Chrysalis reduces the cooldown of Life Cocoon by 30 seconds in PvP combat (was 45 seconds).

The forces of the Void are vying for position and control amongst themselves in a grasp for more power. As they seek every opportunity they can, attacks begin in the Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman zones. Succeed in putting a stop to them, and you reap new rewards.

Put a Stop to Void Strikes

Void Strikes take part in Eversong Woods or Zul’Aman on a weekly rotation. Once completed, a new one will begin in another part of the zone and continue to rotate through the zone as they are completed.

Completing Void Strikes provides a Field Pouch with each completion containing Field Accolades, gold, Voidlight Marl, and more, acknowledging your acumen in the field.

Brace for the Void Incursion

Void Incursions occur when enough Void Strikes have been completed in the zone in which they are active. A progress bar will show on the map allowing you to track when it begins. Gather your allies and head to the gates of Silvermoon City in Eversong Woods or Speaker's Rest in Zul'Aman to take part, as it will take the might of many of Azeroth’s champions to defeat them.

A Quest!

Ranger Captain Lilatha and Kul’amara the Fierce located on the second floor of The Bazaar will also have quests for you to complete rewarding a Ranger’s Cache for completion.

“Cache containing Field Accolades, Relic Coffer Key shards, materials for upgrading gear, gold, and more.”

Reap Your Rewards

When the dust settles and you’ve collected your just rewards, head back to the second level of The Bazaar in Silvermoon City to purchase a variety of items with your Field Accolades and Voidlight Marl. You can purchase new Housing Decor, armor appearances, Heroic and Champion level items, mounts, and more. Visit the Ritual Sites article to see the full list of vendor items.

Whether you’re working on your first character or an alternate character, Void Assaults offer a way to get up to speed and get into the action in Midnight.
