Hi, i'm starting a project about a MMO. As client side it's a ActionSctipt application that will connect to the server though XMLSocket (wich allows TCP connections, alredy tested that i can send data without xml format), but i think i can develop it with java though.

The server, by now, it's being developed with PHP, since it's easy to use, specially for the database connection. But i'm wondering if PHP is strong enough to hold a MMO. The users it has to handle it's expected to be something like OGame or those web-based MMOs, but it's required an open connection between the server and the client.

My other two altrenatives, which i can think on, are c++ or java. I have read a lot that those are the more common languages used for server programming, but i tried database connections, and i couldn't make them work :/

I try to avoid java, since i know it's considerably slower than c++ in algorithms.

So, my questions are: can PHP handle all those TCP connections simultaneously? Which language you think its better for server developing? Do you know any easy guide for TCP and Database connections of c++ or java?

Thank you very much,

The impact of 3D has been everlasting in gaming, and more than likely this is the reason why many have gotten into game art and design. Although playing 3D video games today is amazing the process behind it can be tedious and sometimes even frustrating. In this article Im going to briefly summarize how you could create 3D Game Models using any animation software.
The process of creating a three-dimensional character or object that is later put into a game sounds exciting (as it is), but in reality it is a static creation cycle similar to how an architect would create a building or design a city. Before you start the real video game work you define shapes, objects, and sizes and then proceed to insert your colors and textures. Of course everything comes alive once you insert the models into the game, because this is the part where the game starts taking its true form. But to create any model in the first place you will need animation software.
Some Popular 3D Modeling Software Applications:
1.)	Maya- Considered to be the application at the helm in industry work today, especially in larger video game studios. Like 3Ds Max its professional and also used to make other media forms like movies; the student version or scaled down version is the most affordable.
2.)	3Ds Max- As mentioned above, 3Ds Max is also popular in the game making world, and you could even say its widely known for competing with Maya.
3.)	Blender- Open source and completely free software package with great abilities, a good start for someone with no budget.
A generic overview to creating your Model:
1.) Much like your own body your bones and joints define how you move; this is what makes up the first step in the 3D modeling process, designing a skeleton for the model.
2.) Design a texture-less skin and colorless one around the bones and joints. It is not meant for appearances, just to see how your model will look in shape.
3.) Adding in detail is the next step, and this occurs as you color in the skin to get the look you want. Then you complete it by adding in necessary parts like eyes, clothes, etc.
4.) Telling the model how to behave by directing what bones and joints will move in what directions. In 3D modeling software this process saves you time because after you dictate the beginning and end locations, it usually automatically fills in the middle steps.
5.) Export the model into a video game design software compatible format. Most 3D modeling software programs have this exporting tool built in, and are able to export to a variety of formats for game development.
In short, creating a 3D game model is not a hard process, but still not a brain dead easy one; it takes dedication and a learning curve to work over. Once this is accomplished you can do this as a hobby or even do it as a profession. Nevertheless, it will take practice, persistence and developing creative talents as an artist.

What are the reasons people choose to follow a path in the video game industry? For the most part its the familiarity with the games they grew up with; in my case, I really enjoyed the Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 and the classic games they etched into history. The reasons may vary from being a devote fan to video games, art, or youre your favorite video game characters. Often, the same people who enjoyed games growing up may realize they now have a chance to create and ignite change in the same industry responsible for years of excitement.

Yet, with a passion for games its also important to know that developing and/or having multiple skills is a great advantage to have if you want a job in the gaming industry. This may come as a surprise to many people but positions in a video game studio are meant to be flexible. For example, a director may be responsible for helping the flow of creation in managing the workers involved, but may also possess the art skills or programming skills needed to handle certain emergency situations. Key skills that help aid personal or portfolio development are centered on computer programming, design, good writing skills and of course being an artistic individual. To give a clearer view on game design and an option as to the aspects of game design, I will try breaking down the topic into several areas so that you can see which ones you could excel at or are interested in.

Game Concept Design

Concept design is an early phase and is done primarily by writers and game concept specialists. This is the area where game ideas are thrown around and ultimately the foundation is established. The writers and concept specialists are responsible to create parameters for the game, such as the overall goal or objective in the game, and what type of skills will be used throughout. Most people have a game idea they would like to share or develop, and so those having an awesome game idea, or if just interested in improving upon some games youve played this is the area in the industry to become acquainted with.

Also the game play and rules fall under the concept area, since no video game can be played without guidelines or rules. The rules and guidelines though come with their own problems and are quite complex, and so another available field is for designers who are good at understanding and applying these regulations as well as developing new ones in a creative and rational fashion.

Layout and 3D Modeling

If someone enjoys Photo manipulation, Computer Aided Drafting, Design, and artwork then they would most likely enjoy working in layout and design. There are companies that even hire people strictly to do characters or backgrounds for games in order to give a game a certain style or in a way personality. This is the area that gives most games a distinctive look and feel throughout, while other games may just be dull and lifeless because they are lacking a distinctive touch. Its this distinction in look that inspires a great fan following.

To get more specific in regards to layout and 3D modeling, there is the process of object placement which is primarily associated with the proper placement of objects that may be significant in having special powers, revealing a secret to advancement, or providing a key to the next level. Larger companies are usually at the helm of hiring people to work on extremely specific tasks such as object placement; a sub-category branch in game design.

Plot Development and Scripting

An area in video games that is very important and known to the player but is sometimes overlooked or not fully developed in games is the scripting and plot development. Scripting refers to the dialogue of the characters in complex games, and this alone can either make or break the game because although games focus on game play it is the dialogue that provides the story telling and forward direction in a game. Therefore, unrealistic or awkward scripting can prevent a game from succeeding or even being published, since this aspect is so crucial and central to the design of the game. Scripting in video games could be compared to the writing of a movie script, so having great writing skills while understanding dialogue is necessary to have.

Plot development is equally if not more important than scripting, because the plot in a video game may be incidental to the action. Plotting the game right moves the story forward, and relies heavily on having an understanding of how human nature, character, and motives work. A challenge in plot development for video games is that it should be able to keep the player excited, interested, and driven to complete the game, and so the plot should follow an interesting thread, but also make sense.

Video game design isnt linear or static, but a complex and evolving media, and so attaining diverse skill sets is required not only for being open to a number of diverse job positions, but to ensure longevity in the industry as well. To help with having more skills, there are art colleges and online programs that offer specialized degrees that would enable someone to combine various disciplines ; such as scripting, art, story development, or 3D art, and into one degree. Doing a degree of this type would save you time and money and would also increase the chances of getting hired by a studio.

More Coming soon!
----------------------------
SYNOPSIS:
All of the nations are at the brink of an all out world war, while some are perishing without any support. * Despite their previous animosity, some of the leaders realize that it is in the best interest of the planet to ally, while some are stubborn and unwilling to change. *Political dignitaries from every nation are arguing and discussing about a reasonable agreement to ally. *This unsolvable dispute can guide the extinction of all life on Eldia.

After the impact, the highest threat available to every country was eliminated; the Animos were basically destroyed, but simply surviving in an imprisoned sanctuary. * The impact has caused solar radiation to erupt throughout the atmosphere, causing global illness, and an unrelenting cloud that blocks the sun. *The vegetation on the planet of Eldia is perishing, and it is becoming completely impossible to cultivate and farm crops. *The natural cycle of order has spurred into chaos, while cities and bordering villages collapse into mayhem.
*
The barren land of the Animos has been devoid of any forms of life. *After the impact, the land was stricken with a disease, essentially causing a global cancer that is spreading throughout the planet of Eldia.

The fate of Eldia resides in the dispute between allied nations, while the truth remains in an unknown area of the Animos. *Will the affliction inevitably consume the planet?
----------------------
COUNTRIES:
Emancia -> Emancipation = A free land, full of life and liberation. *Its known for its overwhelming popularity and singularity among other nations. *Fairly new and civilized compared to rival nations. *Its the most powerful nation of the continent, and has the most versatile forces. *However, this land has ultimately corrupted and spread a devastating veil over every foreign and outlying nation, furthering their strength in the land of Eldia.

Barbes -> Barbaric = A financially deprived culture, known for adhering to governmental policy and religious tenants. *Due to lack of resources, many of the individuals have turn to Cannibalism. Generally, they view life unsympathetically, and loathe their adversaries, the Emancia. *This is primarily due to the lack of culture the Emancia have, and the willingness to be free, while to them it is considered heresy and against the will of their creator. *A central reason for the savageness of this culture is the alarming shortages of resources available to their people and the brutality involved with natural selection. *Many of the citizens have contracted diseases; the majority is dying, while the minorities who enlist in their army are fed an over abundance of food. *Their morality is displaced due to lack of education and fundamental guidance through influential members of society. *Emancia has demonized this country due to the common horror of Cannibalism, and to sway public influence for the impending war. *Despite Barbes hostility towards Emancia, their government still trades with Emancia and continues allying discussions in private.

Collian -> Collosus = an authoritarian country that deprives its people from common liberties. *Its definitely the largest and most financially stable country in comparison to every other country. *Their people are common dissenters and it is a volatile situation, but their common love for their culture and background enforces adherence. *Collians Government inflicts a necessary draft to their citizens, all for the purpose of financial gain and military power. *The hostility is mutual towards Emancia, whereas Barbes considered indifferent, due to lack of sufficient resources and their ineffective population in the military.

Isotin->Isolation = the wisest and eldest of all the races, generally thought of and act upon isolationism. *They would rather risk being damaged than get involved with diplomacy or negotiations. *Their race is self sufficient, due to their fortunate location; they have plenty of renewable resources. Because they dont trade, currency is not required, the citizens have limitless work ethic, and each individual labors in relation to their needs. *Primarily, they avoid all discussion with Emancia, due to their nature of control and power. *The Isotins recognize that power corrupts, and their race appreciates life above all. *Unfortunately, despite the vast amount of resources the lush environment provides them, they cannot obtain precious medicines for their people unless they trade with countries. *This has left the country stricken with particular illnesses, beyond this, there have been rumors that these ailments were brought over and created by other nations, in vie of control and influence to trade.

Animos->Animosity= Weak and privileged, these sewer ridden scoundrels survive in the bowels of the earth. *Oddly, their contradictory factors make them one of the most unique races. *Their bodies resemble that of rats, directly in result of the solar radiation. *Their city is made of extravagant runic metals and alkaline, in order to block the solar rays from the sun. *This is due to the altering of earths rotation, and its incline towards the sun. *A year before the impact, the race looked angelic, almost god-like, and their traits resembled that of master craftsmen, able to create towering structures, and powerful machinery out of little resources. *However, their haughty and arrogant attitude posed them as excessive and dangerous, despite their kind hearts. *Instantaneously after the impact, 75% of their race was annihilated. *The remaining quarter of the race was inside an abysmal pit, mining for precious ore, in order to power their magical cities out of Alkaline. The mines inside excrete a mutagenic compound identified as DC-2. *This gaseous compound causes extreme hair growth, angular posture, as well as retracting of arm length and height. *The remaining citizens had issued helped signals through a common practiced called smoke-signaling. *However, their neighbors the Isotin refused to interfere, they called upon both the Collian and the Emancia, but due to their previous history, they also denied to intervene. *Due to this, this starving race is denied from contact and association with other nations, they have pledged to avenge their forsaken race and are working to cure their illness. *If this race prevails, it is a contender that will surely panic both the Collian and Emancia.

Hellians-> Hell = the strongest of the races, able to withstand a host of elements, resistant to fire, and exceedingly strong. Highly threatens both the Animos and Isotin, but generally regards them as expendable assets, towards the Emancia and Collians. *In previous years, before the impact, their homeland was in parallel with the Barbes, essentially enslaving them and committing a nightmarish genocide on this race. *After the impact, the quickly dying race of Barbes immigrated to the continent of Junica, but slowly repopulating. Generally, this race views hostility towards everyone, even their own people are murdered and enslaved for profit. *They consider themselves heretics for a greater cause, despite their evil actions and sinister agenda.
----------------------
ANIMOS LORE:
Seraphim was born into poverty in a tremendously rich nation, which is somewhat conflicting. *His family for generations has worked the mine, in effort to provide for the people, essentially inducing a self-righteous attitude to their situation. *His mother: an innkeeper for a run-of-the-mill tavern, located on the back-end of town, if she was lucky, she would have only 3 customers daily. *Seraphims father was the mine leader, an ex-military captain, and a private enthusiast for future war-campaigns, held by the Animos. *A unique trait bestowed upon Seraphim at birth was the capability of seeing brief lapses into the future, and these werent typical premonitions, they were re-creations in real-time. *Seraphim would truly live his destruction, he had felt what it was like to die, and what consequence would occur if he did not intervene.

Generally, Seraphim was reserved with his ability, due to the high amounts of religious activities and spiritual movement sponsored by the Animos culture. *He believed that if he were to expose his ability to his nation, then they would use him for pure profit, or would use him for religious fortitude. *He had played out the scenario in his head, it had always concluded with him being used in a particular manner, which isnt what he was, he wasnt a tool or resource to be manipulated by his country.

There is a prophecy of the Atlanteans, a god-like race of spirit-beings, which created the Animos through genetic engineering. *However, there was a specific genetic trait that they intrinsically planted within every Animos, and it is prophecy that a leader shall befall a barren landscape and instill serenity and relief. *This prophecy felt more like a religion than a superstitious premonition, large groups of Animos would build temples and pray specifically for the Atlanteans. *Primarily, they would pray for power and unleashing their potential. However, despite the Animoss ignorance, specifically the Atlanteans despised the action of worshipping, and looked down to the Animos as pathetic, due to their near massive capabilities endowed by their genetic tampering. They were light-years beyond most nations, engineering and advancing quickly to the industrial age. *Beyond this, they were much more intelligent and civilized.

After the direct impact, a blinding white light burned the flesh of the Animos, completely engulfing their entire country. *Their skin however resilient couldnt bear the temperatures. *Instantly, within a millisecond, the entire city population was incinerated. *The technology, history, books, education, everything about their society was obliterated, nearly destroying the existence of their culture. *Nearly 25% of the population were work-horses, which occupied the mine, and they knew their place, as over-bearing and authoritative as that sounds, they felt like they were advancing their culture, essentially providing themselves for a greater good. *After the immense impact, the ground trembled violently and caused many of the underlying caves to collapse, as well as the main entrance, certainly providing to the death-toll. *Their equipment was run on the power-generator near the entrance of the cave, after the explosion it literally melted and destroyed all electronic capabilities for the Animos. *They were stuck, abandoned, and left to die in a cave.

Fortunately, many of the individuals stuck in the cave were master engineers, and had a power source alkaline all around them. *But this mineral is highly combustive and mutagenic for the race. *Despite their worries and unthinkable mutation, they continue to live, barely surviving of the scarce materials available to them. *They now hope for the prophet, thats what they cling to; they have no purpose but to plead for the mercy of the Atlanteans. *As time passed, the mutation set in. *Initially the fingers and hands began to shrivel. *The tops of the hands started to grow hair and become feeble. *At first, it wasnt noticeable, and people werent considering it a mutation, but actually an illusion due to the darkness. *Then the hair of the Animos began to fall out, and it was apparent for some individuals that they were definitely mutating, while the majority was in denial. *Nearly everyone was morphing and having obvious changes in appearance, besides Seraphim. *He was the only Animos without any distinct alterations, and it was uplifting to most, even as some were envious and attempted to take Seraphims life. *Fortunately, his ability to see the future had caused him to react effectively against these assassination attempts. *While Seraphim was meditating on the future, one of the Animos tried to stab him in the neck with a sharpened stone. *Seraphim sensed and evaded the blow, and retaliated with an attack to the neck, instantly breaking the adams apple and fracturing his neck.

Interestingly, the people viewed that barbaric act as commendable, and Seraphim felt good about it, like he was treating himself to a well deserved luxury. *The wealthy animos commonly gawked at a young peasant such as Seraphim, but now he was the primary leader, a peon to a god. *He was unquestionably and undeniably their messiah, and the one they have been waiting for.

----------------------
GAME FEATURES:
I believe this lore and history will provide users with an inclination to uphold their moral beliefs. *This game is unlike any other mmo out there, it refuses to adhere to the traditional duality of "good" and "evil". *Furthermore, because of this, it has a realistic symbolism in relation to real world issues, even in modern day society. *All of the factions and countries within this game have shades of gray, and it is dependent upon the user to declare his morality with the inception of your character.

Primarily, another choice to factor into your creation is religion. *Currently, I'm attempting to develop 3 secular and theistic religions that are unique, even to modern standards. *I have no doubt that this game will be controversial, and even overwhelming and trivial to some, but the amount of lore that will be provided, will give users an emotionally charged and rewarding experience.

Things our development team would like and are currently working on.

-Update/Download Manager Completed! SOE ManagerX Can download and extract the SOE Client in secounds!
ManagerX2 is going to be the Actully downloader released to Public and will be able to Update it self and fix its self!

-Perpetual story line with deep symbolism to modern issues, such as war, religion, politics, morality, and culture.

-Custom graphics, GUI, and possibly a MYSQL database that ties in with client registration.

-Difficult to reach maximum level, requires dedication.

-Unique questing career for each nation.

-Many unlockable heroes, advancement to superior races. *Offers limitless replayability.

-Basic MMORPG features: Mailbox, Houses, Professions, Bosses / Group Quests, Guilds.

-PVP: Arena with ratings, possible castle-sieges, and a DOTA game-type.

-Runewords and rare runes to implement in items, and even possibly change them to rare and unique items.

-In game creation of books and reading material to view even more possible backdrops into unlockable heroes, runewords, and secrets to the game.

-Castle Creation

-Evolving political landscape, ability for players to vote and campaign for political status. *With political status you have the ability to influence the nation and form alliances in an advancing story line. *

-Initial in game cash shop, with a real world economy. *It is possible to obtain the in-game real world currency without paying anything, which will provide users with the ability to either buy the items, or trade them with users at a discount for real-world currency. ***Not sure if we're going to go in this direction**

Swords Of Eldia will have tons of mini games such as:
Capture the Flag
Dueling Area
Castle wars
Guild wars
Team Dueling
and hopefully the ability to bet on duels then watch as they fight.

All of these are features that haven't been implemented, and aren't promises, but just things we're thinking of at the moment. *We're currently building on the lore and developing tilesets / maps.

Video games are amongst the most successful forms of media; basically we all grew up on them, playing Atari (or Nintendo/Sega) as kids. Then Nintendo 64 & Sony Playstation 2 came along and now most of that generation is older and wants to get behind the process; like film fanatics wanting to direct. However, to get into the game industry; and succeed once youre in, means you should develop a range of skills, and master one (the saying the power of one means there is more strength in one main skill then in skimming multiple) that is to your liking. Todays employers are looking for a strong portfolio of work from game artists and designers alike.

The twist to the entire concept of making it into the industry is that its not all about your portfolio or even your work experience. Video games are mostly developed in intensive team environments, and so increasingly every year employers are looking for excellent communicators, both in writing and verbally. To stress this, you have to understand the power of teamwork, since you have to work well with others if you want to create a breakthrough game or any game at all by that matter.

Also, its very common to see people who want to get into the industry because they just love video games. There are a lot of people in the love category, but you also should have a deep understanding of game genres and can knowledgeably express yourself about the nuances of either the gameplay or art direction.

So some general qualifications recruiters are looking for in top candidates:

Game Artist:

-Handle different art styles & have a strong portfolio that could showcase a few strengths.
- Be familiar with 3d production tools like 3DSMax or Maya.
- Got to have an eye for lighting, surface detail, and color if your interested in texture art.
- Be ready to handle criticism; giving or taking, and prepare yourself (if not already having) the ability to work in a team environment.

Game Designer:

-	Be organized and communicate well (both written and verbally)
-	Have a good knowledge about game genres, and design philosophy, and constantly educate yourself about it.
-	Of course have a passion for games, but also a vision and passion for the process of making them.
-	Any kind of previous contribution to an already existing product, this could range from a mod, school project, or (if already in the industry) a previous retail product.

Knowing your audience and console will make or break your game, so 3 key questions to keep in mind if you want to be a professional Game Designer: What does the player do? Whos this game designed for? What platform is this game going to run on?

In short, the Game Industry is booming, but like any other industry your longevity and success ultimately comes down to who you are as a person, networking with other individuals, and what else can you contribute to the team, studio, and industry? If you want to succeed be passionate about video games and art/design for itself and not for big money or fame.

Hi, my name is Nick. The Game Industry can be very difficult to get into these days. The key to making it is attaining a diverse background in gaming knowledge, and understanding various software packages. Programs such as Maya, Photoshop, and 3dsMax are at the helm of the industry and are great to know for developing a portfolio or getting further into your business or hobby. In succeeding as a digital artist its vital to broaden your knowledge in regards to traditional skill, technology, and creativity. I hope to be of help to others in understanding digital art and the game industry.

Thanks for having me here, :)
