Gadgets: Boon or Bane?

In this new era of science and technology, we have incorporated gadgets (such as cell phones, laptops, computers, iPods, etc...) in our everyday lives.

Many individuals especially students have gadgets together with them. The question is “Do gadgets help or distract students?” To answer this question I list down the advantages and disadvantages of gadgets to one’s life.

These are some advantages of gadgets:
• A faster way to research information (via internet)
• Sometimes a more effective way of learning (via educational computer programs)
• prepare students for globalized world where computer-literacy is a must.
• Easier way of communication.
• help students if they have difficulties on school work.
• More accessible.
• Gives students recreation.
• A larger source of information.
    And these are the disadvantages:
• Students tend to be lazy.
• Computer games such as online games divert the students attention from school.
• can be used for procrastination.
• distract students from school work.
• Students lose interest in school.
• Students waste their time in front of the gadgets instead of having family bonding.

          As a student, it helps me a lot especially in providing answers to my problems. Just one click on “uncle Google” and it will show me the answers. And as a writer it is easier to produce a newspaper using the advance technology not like before.

        Gadgets make many things more efficient, but like every other aspect of life; they have their own set of disadvantages as well.
If I were to ask, it will still depend on the purpose of the user that determines the usefulness or futility of innovations.

Reproductive Health Bill

First step: Always the hardest, but we MUST

If our homelands can merely be outstretched immensely, then we do not have to dispute about the passage of Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, that is, in a quixotic realm.

In year 2008, the Philippines population is approximately 92 681 453, with a population growth rate of about 1.73 percent. Now, evaluating the approximation, we are instantly around hundreds of millions. Our population is rapidly boosting and tending to block up every space of our lands, yet some of us still don’t bother this ilk of experience. This growth is compelling each of the Filipino to take an action – if not to stop, at least to control it.

Reproductive Health (RH) Bill has its main concern on Birth Control, implication of such methods to limit, regulate and not to END the existence of beings. The bill is trying to emphasize the reality that we need to find a way of resolving our difficulties in terms of rapid population growth and to incubate in our minds that abortion, which is a method of killing, is ultimately verboten. In Birth Control, the exploitation of various methods explicitly the barrier methods, intrauterine devices, hormonal contraceptives, surgical sterilization, emergency contraception, fertility awareness methods, withdrawal, and continuous abstinence, the development of an existence is therefore PREVENTED – these diversify birth control from killing since there is not yet an actuality of life.

The extent of land is definitely unchangeable, making the people dependent to it. We must adjust ourselves to the area we are living on, it is irreversible and impossible for it to fit itself to our number. We have estimated our consumption of land, if not there might be an instance that we’ll run off of spaces and eventually try to resolve as much as intensive difficulty. Perhaps, we are already in the state near to this cumbersome situation.

It is a matter of choice. Be pedantic, say NO. But be sure that you’ll begin scrutinizing for a means of terrain expansion, of you fail, simply start imagining yourself sleeping while standing.

DepEd, partners gang up against bullying in schools

The Department of Education has found an ally in Jesuit Basic Education Commission (JBEC) in its fight against bullying in schools.

JBEC, in cooperation with Solar Entertainment, has brought the acclaimed documentary “Bully” to the Philippines and no less than Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC has graced its premiere last night, November 13, 6:30 PM, at Robinson’s Galleria Cinema 4.

“It is important for us to stand up against bullying in schools. Enough is enough,” said Luistro before the screening of the film.

Luistro, who disclosed that he himself had been bullied when he was in Grade 4, noted that bullying is everywhere and its solution depends on how we act about it. “There is a bully in you and me but the solution will depend on how we address and overcome the bully in us, on how we allow the bullies around us to take advantage of us.”

The film, which was directed by Lee Hirsch, focuses on the alarming rise in bullying faced by teenage students in America. It chronicles various cases of bullying in high schools in Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Mississippi and Oklahoma, which two of the cases tragically ended in suicide.

Meanwhile, Fr. Johnny Go, SJ, JBEC chair, hopes this campaign will lead schools to adopt a pro-active stance against bullying, with each stakeholder committing and contributing to a nurturing and bully-free school environment that is the right of every student.

“We hope this movie can reach as wide an audience as possible, especially among our students,” Go said. “At the very least, it should heighten awareness of this issue and begin productive discussions and reflections about a real problem that can no longer be ignored.”

DepEd Undersecretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs Alberto Muyot presented DepEd’s Child Protection Policy and reiterated that “to stop bullying, we have to act now because for our children, it may be too late.”

JBEC will use this powerful documentary to launch the anti-bullying campaign, “Not in Our School,” endorsed by the popular sportsman, Chris Tiu. The advocacy is aligned with the DepEd Order No. 40, series of 2012 or the “Child Protection Policy.” This seeks to defend the student from any form of abuse, including bullying. In light of recent local and international headlines about bullying, this film can be a timely wake-up call for all involved: parents, teachers, administrators, and especially students.

In addition to its theatrical screening, JBEC is offering several Saturday block screenings in Robinson’s Galleria for schools who want to show the film exclusively for their community. In addition, schools can also sponsor campus screenings for a minimal fee. To enhance its use as a formative tool, JBEC will provide teachers and parents with a discussion guide to facilitate processing of the complex message of the movie. (PRESS RELEASE)

Luistro warns teachers against investment scam

The Department of Education advises the public especially its teaching and non-teaching personnel not to fall prey to high-yielding investment proposals that are most likely nothing but scams.

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC said that there are certain lending institutions or organizations that solicit investments from the public purportedly for a substantial return on investment.

“Offers such as faster return on investment and a higher than normal rate of return are attractive to the gullible who are more susceptible to this kind of scam,” Luistro added. For example, an investment of a certain amount will earn as high as fifty percent per week or month. This, financial experts say, is statistically impossible.

Luistro explained that one of the modus is to ask the unsuspecting teacher to deposit a certain amount to the bank and to present the deposit slip as proof of enrolment to the scheme. The teacher will then be left empty-handed.

There was an instance involving teachers at Commonwealth High School in Quezon City where they were made to invest a certain amount of money deductible from their monthly salaries. The alleged investment, they were told, has a provision for loan application. But when the teachers applied for a loan, they were denied for lack of required amount of contribution. When they asked for a refund, they were rebuffed.

“We therefore warn all DepEd personnel to be extra cautious when offered high- yielding instruments which are too good to be true because more often than not, they are untrue,” Luistro said. *(press release)

MNHS Poblacion initiated the one-day Municipalwide Mural Activity in partnership with Mayor Jesse Conepcion,LGU-Mariveles Softnet Information Technology Center and PTA Federation with the full support of “ Dolphins Love Freedom at Roman Boulevard, Brgy. Poblacion Mariveles , Bataan last October 23. To create a great impact to the minds of people in protecting the environmentThe program was conceptualize through meetings conducted by the Faculty Officers of the school.

To cover the expenses such as button pins,T-shirt printing, paint, paintbrushes,food and accommodation, the Faculty Officers solicited ,the PTA Federation(consisting of 23 schools) each school shared budget, and Mayor Jesse Concepcion assisted the activity through financial support and and snacks as covered by LGU fund.

Architect Guerrero M. Saño, a “Dolphins Love Freedom” representative, challenged the people to reduce the current practice of citizens such as catching of extinct marine animals and to implement proper waste management.

Every month of July, the TLE Department participates with the national celebration of NUTRITION MONTH to propagate nutrition messages to students and parents through a principal theme. This 2012, the theme is “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw araw itong ihain!” to give emphasis on the promotion of vegetables and its nutritional benefits.

Enrollment Rate Increases

Mariveles National High School- Poblacion increased 241 students in its enrollment from school year 2011- 2012 to school year 2012- 2013.

The enrollment last school year was 2,419 and had ascended to 3,660 this school year. As its enrollment rate increases, its dropout rate decreased last year through Dropout Rate Reduction Plan of the said school.

Moreover, Poblacion’s participation rate had also increased with the help of faculties, staffs, administrators, and the involvement of parents, the Local Government Unit, Barangay officials and the Community itself.

The completion and retention rate of the school has also decreased last year. Poblacion continues its mission in giving quality education to citizenry of Mariveles as well as its nearby town Binukawan, Bagac, Bataan.

DepEd explains sex education plan

Sex education is not all about making love.

This clarification was made by the Department of Education (DepEd) last Friday after drawing strong opposition from the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) against the plan to teach sex education to elementary pupils and high school students when classes start on June 15.

The statement was made by Education Secretary Mona Valisno after Malacañang asked the DepEd to defer its plan to integrate sex education in the basic curriculum until consultations are done with Church leaders and after addressing the concerns of the CBCP.

Valisno clarified that classroom discussions on sex education that will be piloted in almost 160 schools — 79 public high schools and 80 elementary schools — is not about the sex act but “on the science of reproduction, physical care and hygiene, correct values and the norms of interpersonal relations to avoid pre-marital sex and teen-age pregnancy.”

She said the contents of the modules that will be integrated in core subjects are scientific, informative, and are not designed to titillate prurient interest. “For example in science, the reproductive system and reproductive cycle have always been part of the curriculum, including the changes that happen during puberty,” Valisno said.

The DepEd chief also emphasized that “the role of teachers is to educate young people on issues that directly affect them and empower them to make informed choices and decisions.”

Valisno said sex education will be integrated in science; Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP); health; Heograpiya, Kasaysayan, at Sibika; and mathematics. Under Science, topics on the reproductive system, parts of the body, reproductive cycle, and puberty are discussed. EPP, on the other hand, will integrate proper behavior among and between peers of different genders.

The health component of MAPEH (Music, Arts, PE and Health) covers personal hygiene and reproductive health. Valisno elaborated that sex education will be taught in social studies topics under Heograpiya, Kasaysayan, at Sibika such as the position of religion on pre-marital sex and the norms when people of opposite sex interact. In mathematics, students will use data on issues like pre-marital sex, teenage pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections in their mathematical analysis and exercises in statistics.

“Among those who prepared the modules are psychologists because we want to ensure that specific topics for discussions will be made in the appropriate year levels,” she said. Also, the topics requiring a more mature audience are discussed in the latter years in high school.

Based on the reports from DepEd, two batches of teachers who will be using the modules have already been trained, while a third batch is being prepared for training this year.

BFP joins school maintenance week

The members of Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Mariveles Chapter participated in the school maintenance week at Mariveles National High School-Poblacion on the fourth day of the said event headed by SFO1 Romeo DC Abergas, Municipal Fire Marshal, FO2 Salvador Bernabe III, Municipal Chief FSES, FO2 Joel Pajares, Municipal Admin, FO1 Melani Maiquez , Municipal Collecting Agent/CRO, and the Mariveles Fire Brigade Team.

The BFP repaired the perforated roads, painted the walls of the school and helped the parents by cleaning-up the rooms and different sides of the school.

It is a good thing to know that the BFP has been consistent for so many years in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the school every time there is an implementation of program such as the “Brigada Eskwela”.

In the meantime, Mariveles National High School-Poblacion continued its fourth day of maintenance week for the preparation of the upcoming school year with the help and participation of parents, teachers, and students.

The BFP promised that there good connection with the school will not cease and there support will continue s long as there are activities like the school maintenance week.

Mariveles National High School-Poblacion highlighted the start of the annual School Maintenance Week headed by Mr. Quirino G. Barlis, Secondary School Principal IV and School heads, faculty Staff, with the initiative of parents, students, Supreme Government Officers (SGO), and General Parents and Teachers Council Association (GPTCA) officers which was held last May 21 wherein everyone joined in cleaning the school grounds, classrooms and other part of the school campus to ensure the readiness of every aspect of the school before the start of the class on June 04.

Moreso, there was a motorcade being joined by the different schools of Mariveles district coming from both elementary and secondary levelwhich started from Barangay Alion to Antonio G. Llamas Elementary School wherein there was a short program held at AGLES as the last destination of the said . Meanwhile, there was also an enrolment among second year students being partnered by their parents as they joined together in cleaning the classrooms, repainting the walls and other tasks as they were assisted by some teachers while the main event was going on.

The latest National Leadership Training for Student Government Officers was a great success with less than 6,000 participants consisting of student leaders and SSG Advisers from all all over the country. The annual seminar was held in Teacher’s Camp, Baguio City.

With the efforts of DepEd CSCA and Mr. Joey G. Pelaez, the 7-day workshop became interesting and easy to learn. The Ateneo Code, an group for organization development, provided the student leaders a very friendly approach for teaching management concepts.

Sam Concepcion, Gab Valenciano, Ivan Dorschner and other artists were there to entertain the youths’ evenings for socialization.

New Classrooms Installed

The DepEd Central Office of Bataan, through the Principal – Led School Building Program, provided a 1.120M-budget for the installation of two additional classrooms in Mariveles National High School – Poblacion due to the disturbing escalating number of students.

It can be remembered that this project of additional rooms, including the schools of Lamao National High School and Mariveles National High School – Cabcaben, was initiated since 2009 but the budget was released just this month of September.

After that the budget was released by the Division Budget Management (DBM), the construction of the project was realized through the partnership of the Turquoise Construction and Trading on September 9.

Furthermore, the entity of the project was still on process because there are 2 more rooms to construct to make it a 3-story building which was again supported by the DepEd Central Office.

As of press type, it is depending upon the decision of Mr. Quirino G. Barlis whether how will he disseminate the students to the new classrooms installed and he’s hoping that this will be a great help for the welfare of the students and the whole community as well.

Faculty, Studes back World Teachers Day

Mariveles National High School- Poblacion rejoiced for World Teachers Day last October 5, 2010 in Mariveles Sports Complex.

The program was formally opened by Mr. Quirino G. Barlis, Secondary School Principal- III and Mr. Jonathan T. Tabbun, faculty president who full- heartedly extended their warm greetings to all their co- teachers.

The certificates were then given away next to every mentor of each year level which served as a way of showing appreciation to their hard works.

What became the liveliest part of the program was the presentation prepared by teachers from each year level.

The audience was all amazed as the teachers grooved to the music showing their bubbliest sides.
The sections with the best cards made were also awarded with certificates for winning in the card making competition.

Every teacher went out field with gratitude for the love and appreciation reflected unto them.
The realization of the program was through the effort of the Supreme Student Government (SSG).

PDCC initiates Earthquake Drill

To prepare the students, teachers, workers and administrators of Mariveles National High School- Poblacion, the quarterly Earthquake five minutes-drill which was intertwined by a Fire drill was held at the school quadrangle on September 24.

The said drill was initiated by the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council as a part of preparing the people in times of unexpected incidents brought by the nature.

Prior to the drill, the admirers of every section were given an orientation on how to guide their students whenever the alarm has started to sound and what will be the next step afterwards.

Moreover, some girl scouts, boy scout, teachers and Students Government Officers were chosen to act some scenes like fire fighting, application of first aids and helping the victims in times of needs.

Meanwhile, the signal has started to sound at 10 o’clock in the morning and lasted for approximately five minutes and the whole drill has lasted for almost an hour.

There was an evaluation right after the said drill and the feedback was positive because according to the evaluators, through the time for the preparation is just limited, there was cooperation among the students and teachers during the actual drill.

“We appreciate the presence and effort of our District Policemen and Firefighters together with the evaluators in working well with us to make this drill a successful event and we will do this regularly not only as a requirement but also as an advance preparation for all of us,” said Mr. Quirino G. Barlis, School Principal as he ended his message during the evaluation.

TLE Department Spearheads Educational Tour

The TLE Department spearheaded the educational tour for the students of Mariveles National High School- Poblacion last September 21 on their trip to Pampanga.

With excited hearts, the students went to Pampanga to enrich their minds as they learn while enjoying.

The first destination was Clark Museum wherein different facts about the history and past of the said province were displayed.

After enjoying the beauty and knowledge, everyone went next to SM Pampanga. Here they gained information about the present condition of our Earth regarding the challenges it faces through a film showing.

Lastly, the students were sent to Nayong Pilipino also to have fun and attain additional knowledge as well.

Real life replicas of historical structures and places caught the eyes of everybody which even enriched their minds more.

The success of this field trip would be impossible if not for the coordination of all the TLE teachers who worked hardly for the organization of the whole activity.

“Basyang” Hits Mariveles

MARIVELES, Bataan – the super typhoon “Basyang” hit the town of Mariveles last July 13 at about midnight particularly the location of Brgy. Poblacion where numbers of fishing boats and ships together with some barges were devastated and many houses were destroyed.

In the investigation, the residents are not ready for the unexpected strike of the typhoon because they are unmindful and have no idea how powerful the said typhoon will be.

It was ten in the evening when the typhoon unpredictably shed its force making the power supply to be totally cut off and the Rescue teams, search personnel and navy officers of the government responded the following day to find the dead bodies and missing persons.

With the year’s theme:”Filipino Youth: Pursuing National Unity through Accountable Leadership”, MNHS - Poblacion was hailed as “Mas Matinik’ in the annual UP Patinikan held in Bataan Heroes Memorial College last October 24.

Romalane Magdaong secured the 1st place in the Poster-Making Category with her coach -Mrs. Shirley Mabitazan. The second place,on the other hand, was also garnered by Lovely Joy Peligrino in her Extemporaneous Speech - Mrs. Susan Redima. Andrian Flores bagged the 3rd place in Essay Writing (Filipino) – Ms. Mildred Vilan; Jetaime Siocon, Roxanne Ortouste and Kings Lee Magday as 4th place in the UP Quiz Show – Mrs. Rosemarie Maglaki. Marianne Serrano copped 5th place in the Essay Writing (English) with Mrs. Renila Cornejo as coach.
The said event also highlighted the induction of the new members of the UP Tangway here in Bataan as well as the discussion with reference to the importance of accountable leadership in achieving national unity in our country.
The 1st, 2 and 3rd placers will be the representatives of our school and also of the UP Tangway in the National Level in UP Diliman next year by February.

In compliance to the Department of Educaton Curriculum under the ICT or (Information and Communications Technology) for Education, the Information Hub also known as iHub project in Bataan was launched for the Pilot schools at Mariveles National High School-Poblacion under the Municipality of Mariveles last October 18.
The launching program was started with the ribbon cutting by President Arroyo followed by the confirmation of the iHub computers connection and the speech of Governor Tet Garcia, Cong. Albert Garcia, Cong. Carissa Coscolluella and ended with the message delivered by the president herself.

Pres. Arroyo exclaimed that she is so thankful for the effort of the Officials of Bataan for initiating this kind of project. ‘I want every student nationwide to become computer literate. Kahit isang computer lang basta interconnected sa internet, yun ang importante kasi kung mayroon kang 20 computers kung wala namang connectiviy, walang matutunan kundi computer games lang kaya importante ang connectivity.’ thus said Mrs. Arroyo.
The stated project was realized through the leadership of Hon. Albert S. Garcia, Congressman of Bataan 2nd district and Hon. Carissa Coscolluela, Congresswoman of Buhay party list with the cooperation of Governor Enrique T. Garcia Sr., mayors of Bataan and diverse group of stakeholders deploying 500 computers, 14 laptops, 14 LCD TV’s, 14 WiFi routers, 14 printers and other computer accessories and productivity tools that will benefit more or less 24,000 students, 769 teachers and the community members.
The main goal of the Information Hub project is for computer users to maximize the utilization of information communications and technology and to build and ICT enabled community through the Bataan 2nd district Secondary Schools wherein the expected minimized ratio is at least 50 users for each computer connected with the international networking (internet) cables.

MNHS-Poblacion Tilts STEP Championship

Mariveles National High School-Poblacion has copped once again the championship trophy this year in the previously held Division STEP Competition last October 1-2 in Samal National High School. After garnering a total of 94.5 points with five 1st places, five 2nd places,two 3rd places and one 4th place, our school has prevailed among the other schools in the whole Division of Bataan.

In lined with the Go Negosyo Campaign, the 4th Youth Entrepreneurship and Cooperative in Schools (YECS) Entrepreneurship Training and Conference was clutched last July 26-31, 2009 at Teacher’s Camp, Baguio City and was delegated by different YECS and STEP members together with their advisers and school head teachers, Division and Regional Supervisors in TLE and different School Principals from private and public schools all over the country.

With its theme “Teen Negosyo University: We’re in Business (How to Go Negosyo)”, six days full of entrepreneurial activities among the delegates were held which pursues to enhance more the entrepreneurial abilities of students and prepare them in continuing their career as businessmen of society in the future.

Moreover, Jeverlyn G. Huerto, School’s YECS Chairwoman, III-Star, together with her group, were recognized to have the “Best Business Idea” under the supervision of Ms. Edna B. Empleo, TLE Department Head Teacher III.

Meanwhile, during the entertainment night, different celebrities surprised the delegates with their timely entertainment performances. Two of those were Christian Bautista, famous singer and Sam Concepcion, present DepEd Youth Spokesperson respectively.

This conference was made possible through the help and cooperation of the Department of Education – Center for Students and Co-Curricular Affairs (DepEd – CSCA), Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE), Office of Presidential Consultant on Entrepreneurship Joey A. Concepcion, Department of Trade and Industry – Philippine Trade Training Center (DTI – PTTC) and The Master Lighthouse Foundation (TMLF).

SPA’ s and CJ’s attend Regional Training

A total of around 400 elementary and secondary SPA’s an CJ’s from both Public and Private schools attended the Regional training for School Paper Adviser and Campus Journalists at Juan R. Liwag National High School, Gapan City, Nueva Ecija last September 16-18 as being launched by DepEd Region III.

The said training was participated by Mr. Joey R. Silva, school paper adviser; Ms. Contessa Sagad, Filipino teacher; Angela Yanica Marzo and Joseph Andrew Jalober, both Campus Journalists.

Mr. Renato Aranda and Ms. Liwayway R. Marcado were two of the speakers who discussed some of the insights on how to improve the totality of every school publication especially the importance of implementing programs among the staffers.

Moreover, winners in the said activity were given certificates of recognition on the last day of seminar wherein Mr. Silva got the 2nd place in Feature Writing (SPAs Category); Angela Yanica Marzo, 2nd Place in News writing ands Joseph Andrew Jalober was recognized as 2nd place in Feature Writing.

Student Leaders from all over the Philippines with our very own Supreme Student Government Officers namely, Andrian N. Flores, Kings Lee M. Magday, Marrianne M. Serrano, Charmina G. Sejalbo, and Julie Ann R. Rubia guided by the adviser Mrs. Cecile Rubia attended the annual NTSGO last September 4-9 held at Teacher’s Camp, Baguio City.

This sixth student seminar-training with the theme “New Beginnings for Nation Building: Seizing Opportunities, Sustaining Initiatives, Ako ang Magsisimula ng Pagbabago’’ primarily aims to teach young leaders to have good governance and work hand-in-hand to cope for what our country calls for.

Many speakers were invited such as Fr. Jayboy Gonzales, Mr. Cito Beltran and Mr. Harvey Keh that shared their experiences with regards to leadership. They also challenged the youth to participate more and get involve in the pursuance of a better country. As they say, “Everyone can contribute to nation building.’’

The election of the National Federation of Supreme Student Government Officers was also conducted. The officers who won will be in the position to lead and to serve their fellow students of the country within the whole year.

Celebrities like Gary, Gab and Paolo Valenciano, Diether Ocampo , Sam Concepcion, Ronnie Liang, and Robi Domingo who got there gave some highlights in the event.

This seminar was made possible through the cooperation of Center for Students Co-Curricular Affairs (CSCA) headed by Executive Director Joey G Pelaez with the Department of Education and help of the Masters Lighthouse Foundation and the Ateneo Student Trainers.
