Hello to the Photo Faithful,

Yes the MNPA is alive and well and preparing for this year’s contest. I hope all of you are well and have had a fabulous year.

This year’s deadline is Sunday, March 18th at midnight. The contest will work just like last year’s. CPOY will be judged by local photographers. The first place entries from the college contest will be entered in the pros. The professional contest will be sent to another newspaper where it will be judged.

The next important date Saturday, April 28th is the convention day. This year we will have enough money to fly a speaker in. If you have any suggestions please let me know. If there is anyone in Minnesota you’d like to hear speak let me know that too. The plan is to have one speaker fly in and maybe one local one and then a showing on the winners.

Once we have judges and speakers in place I will let everyone know.

Take care everyone!

Can you believe it? MNPA is back. Thanks to the help of Ben Garvin, Jim Gehrz, Janet Reeves and especially our new web guru McKenna Ewen. We’re leaner, more nimble, and ready to move forward. Check out the new and improved website which will be our portal to visual fun and excitement in our region. http://www.mnpa.org/ Here’s our plan.

Contest:

Yes we have one! The due date for entries is Sunday April 10th 10:00 pm. Please go to the website for all the details. http://www.mnpa.org/?page_id=1436 It’s pretty simple. Click on the category and upload the file. The rules are the same as last year. The contest fees have changed slightly. Check it out. If you have any questions just email me or us at mnnewsphoto@gmail.com

The contest will be judged out of state. We’re sending it off and the hope is to have all three judges, from the same locale, meet and look at the work together. The multi-media would be judged by separate group of folks.

Eligibility especially for the freelancers in the area can be an issue. If you’ve lived in Minnesota in 2010 and/or had done work for a Minnesota news organization (paper, magazine or website) you are eligible. If you have any questions just email us.

Convention:

We’ve scaled it down to one day Saturday April 30th at the University of Minnesota’s Murphy Hall. We’re hoping that we can fly one person in to speak. They will be photo critiques. Canon said they were going to try and send someone for the day. If there are local folks who you would be interested in hearing from, topics you’d like to address let us know.

Our Future:

Well you know what I’ve always said: It’s up to us. This organization survives because you are interested, because you care. It was nice hearing from so many of you who were disappointed at the possibility the organization was dying and upset that you didn’t know how to help. We are all so busy it’s hard to know how to contribute.

Here’s what you can do. Tell us what’s happening with you. Tell us what cool visual stuff is happening where you live. Let the MNPA help promote you. Let the website, Twitter and Facebook page keep us all informed about each other.

This is a great region with solid talented visual journalists who are really good people. We’re hoping that the MNPA’s web vessels will keep us all connected. As always I’ll be your guide if you have any questions or comments. I might not be as fast responding (my boy, Will, keeps me pretty busy) but I will respond.

I hope all of you are well and as happy as you can be. Contact me if you need anything.

Show and Tell – A Minnesota Photo Night

We hope we you can make it to the first MN Photo Night hosted in South Minneapolis. Come to share work and be inspired by the work of others.

In the spirit of building a stronger photographic community in the Twin Cities area we are starting a photo night to bring local photographers together to get to know one another, socialize and look at work.

The Details

Date – Tuesday March 22
Time – 7 pm
Location – 4615 Cedar Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55407. There’s no parking in front of our house on Cedar, but there’s parking on 46th Street and along the street by the Lake Hiawatha Golf Course.
Website – http://showandtellmn.com/<http://ackermangruberimages.createsend3.com/t/y/l/fkjct/pkiuutydk/h/>

What to Bring

10-30 images on a USB key/CD to share or a short-film/multimedia piece to share.

The work you share can be a recent project you’re working on or past projects you’ve completed.
Please be thoughtful of everyone’s time and limit your work to 10 min.

This will be a very informal event – we want to celebrate all kinds of photography so bring whatever you want to share with the group and seeing as we’re still getting familar with MN there’s probably a few photographers we missed in this email so feel free to invite them and any other creatives that you think might enjoy a photo night.

We would love for everyone to share work, but if you’d like to come and just be inspired by the work of others that is fine too.

Potluck – If you have a signature dish we’d love for you to share it. Otherwise we will have some food to nibble on while we check out great photos.

BYOB (Bring your drink of choice.)

Any Questions?

Please get in touch with either of us if you have any questions, need directions, etc. Email Tim and Jenn at mail@ackermangruber.com<mailto:mail@ackermangruber.com> or call at +1-612-293-7175

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you all soon!

Yes it’s Minnesota photographers’ personal cheerleader again but this time she has some sad news. I am stepping down as president of MNPA. It’s actually pretty painful for me to let go. I still have so much I wanted to accomplish but it’s time. It’s time for a new president and new ideas. I can’t tell you how much fun it was to meet all of you. So many different people from all over the state and some folks right in town that I didn’t even know about. It was an honor meeting you and looking at your work year after year.

Thank you for your participation. Remember without you there is no organization. Speaking to that someone will need to take the reins. Someone will need to lead the MNPA. If you are interested please let me know. I’m not going anywhere so whoever decides to take this job they will have my support and the support of all the people that care about this organization. You will not be alone.

Well thanks everyone for a fabulous time. Your former president but still your cheerleader,
