Description

Somewhere in the big city, in a tall, faceless government building someone left a window open. All the winds of change are doing here is blowing leaves all over Joe’s newly-swept floor. He’s been there for two years now. Working a dead-end attendant job making sure the building is as spotless as the suits walking the halls. It’s been like this for years, going from one soul-devouring job to the next.

Our protagonist is Joe in more than just name. He is quite literally Joe Average. Average height, average weight, average IQ. In fact, the only thing remotely remarkable about him is exactly how much he conforms to the median of the hypothetical everyman, and up until this point, Joe’s life hasn't exactly been biography material. This is all about to change.

One morning while tending the floors, Joe is suddenly confronted by a mysterious dying man who is seemingly appearing out of nowhere. The man warns him that a terrible event is about to occur and pleads him to save mankind. As the man draws his last breath, he hands Joe a portable time travel device to aid him on his quest.

It isn't long before Joe activates the device and is confronted by the truth. The mysterious man was right: 40 years into the future mankind has become extinct. Stuck between a desolate future and a present where he is largely ignored, it is now up to our accidental hero to find out what has happened and how to prevent it in order to save mankind.

Two new Android devices launched on Tuesday, Aug. 21, bringing Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to gadgets other than smartphones and tablets. The first device will hit the UK as a touchscreen-based laptop/netbook for students, while the other will launch in the U.S. as a USB stick-shaped mini PC.

The first one is ERGO Electronics' dual-function GoNote hybrid, which combines the traditional laptop form factor with a tablet-style touchscreen. It comes with a 10-inch LED-backlit touchscreen with two-finger resistive touchscreen technology and a 1024 x 600 resolution. It also packs an ARM-based 1.2GHz Rockchip RK2918 SoC, about 1GB of DDR3 RAM (depending on the model), 8GB of internal memory, and a microSD card slot for additional memory (up to 32GB).

The netbook also sports a front-facing VGA camera, four USB 2.0 ports, audio ports, microphone jack, and a miniHDMI v1.3 port for watching HD videos on an HDTV. It packs a Lithium Polymer 900mAh 3.7V battery, which should last for roughly six hours of Web browsing and one week of standby. Other features include an Ethernet port and Wi-Fi connectivity.

"GoNote brings Android to the forefront of 'work' computing, where it's not just about sofa surfing," said ERGO Electronics. "With GoNote, Android gets serious, helping students unleash their ideas, access information, capture their thoughts and maximize their learning potential. GoNote comes with an Office suite pre-loaded so users can create, edit, collaborate and save Microsoft Office format Documents, Presentations and Spreadsheets to the GoNote's onboard storage or to the Cloud. GoNote also comes with Google Play Store, giving users access to 400,000 Android Apps to help them learn, interact and relax at the end of the day."

The GoNote gadget will launch in September in the UK for £149.99 ($237), and will be available in black or white models. There is no word yet on whether the device will also be available in the United States.

Meanwhile, the other new Android device comes from Oval Elephant, which is now accepting pre-orders for its $89.99 Android-based mini PC. The stick-sized PC measures just 3.50 x 1.30 x 36 inches, but packs a powerful dual-core Cortex 9-based Rockchip RK3066 clocked at 1.2GHz up to 1.6GHz, an integrated Mali-400 GPU, 1080pvideo, 4GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, microSD card slot for up to 32GB of additional storage, Ethernet, a USB 2.0 host port, 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, and an HDMI 1.3 output jack.

The gadget runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with installation supported by Google, which means users will have access to Google Play, Google Maps, Gmail, and other popular Google services. The mini PC also comes with a USB to miniUSB cable for power, as the unit does not include an A/C power adapter, as well as a female/male HDMI extender cable. Users can also purchase an additional 5w 2A USB Power Adapter from Oval Elephant for $1.89.

The Android-based mini PC is expected to ship around Sept. 6-7, and Oval Elephant is likely the only company to sell the device directly to consumers in the U.S.

Windows 8 Receiving Unity 4 Engine Support

he Unity game development engine is often praised for its flexibility in development and used for building mobile titles. Unity confirmed recently that the release of Unity 4 will also support Microsoft's upcoming operating system, Windows 8.

Unity announced the news at its Unite conference in Amsterdam. Support for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 will surface during Unity 4's "release cycle". On the FAQ page at Unity 3D, Unity said it will announce a shipping date "soon".

"Our mission at Unity has always been to provide solutions for developers to effortlessly bring their work to as many different platforms as possible. The Unity community has been asking for access to Windows Phone and have been eagerly anticipating the release of Windows 8," Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason said. Unity also claimed Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are two of "the most eagerly awaited platform additions within the Unity development community".

We are excited that that Unity community will now be given the opportunity to develop world class titles for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. The number of high-quality Unity-authored games for PC, Xbox, and mobile devices already created is staggering and we're looking forward to seeing these products appear in the Windows Store and the Windows Phone marketplace," Senior Director of Windows App Marketing at Microsoft John Richards added.

Unity 4 will also have Linux support, an operating system recently adopted by Half-Life developers Valve.

The "Butterfly Effect" Unity 4 tech demo (below) surfaced and ran on DirectX 11, detailing the journey of a man from waking up, then causing mass chaos in a city before returning to bed again.

How well Unity 4 will compete with the next-generation of gaming engines remains unknown. DICE may update its Frostbite 2 engine, rather than launching a new engine entirely, while the increased hardware will mean exciting possibilities for developers like 343 Industries that are pushing the Xbox 360 to its limit.

Unity is basically a free game engine, though platform licenses start from $400 and rise to $1500.

Samsung Galaxy S2 4G for $369.99 Contract-Free – Soon on Boost Mobile

Boost Mobile fans received very good news on Wednesday, Aug. 22, when the carrier announced a slew of Samsung devices coming this fall. The biggest of the three handsets the carrier unveiled at its media event in New York is the Samsung Galaxy S2 4G, which will retail for $369.99 without a contract when it is released on Sept. 6.

The handset is a 4G variant of last year's most impressive Android smartphone. Prepaid carriers used to get only handsets that postpaid carriers did not want, leading to an "okay" selection, but nothing impressive. Users who wanted a phone without committing to a contract had to settle for what carriers had to offer, and the prepaid selection bore no comparison to the handsets available on postpaid operators.

With Boost's new lineup, however, that may be about to change. The Samsung Galaxy S2 4G is still a very impressive smartphone, even if it is last year's iteration. It sports a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 16GB of storage, 1080p movie mode, an 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, WiMAX/EVDO-Rev A. radios, and a 1800mAh battery. Boost is the first no-contract carrier in the U.S. to offer the Galaxy S2 4G.

"Together with Samsung we continue to launch compelling device options from entry-level to 4G-enabled smartphone to meet the evolving needs of our customers," said Boost Mobile's vice president Andre Smith. "Launching the award-winning Samsung Galaxy S II 4G marks a defining moment for Boost's customers craving a portable entertainment powerhouse and a no-contract unlimited plan that shrinks to as low as $40 a month."

In addition to the Galaxy S2, Boost Mobile is also offering the Samsung Galaxy Rush and Samsung Array, two affordable, low-end Android handsets. The Samsung Galaxy Rush comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and will sell for $149.99 in late September. It packs a 3.5-inch display, a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Meanwhile, the Array will come on Sept. 4 at the lower end of the line, with a $59.99 price tag, and will feature a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 2-megapixel rear camera and a 2.4-inch LCD screen.

Microsoft has big plans to release its Windows 8 based Surface tablet this year, and there is no doubt the Surface tablet will find success. As you may already know, there are two versions of the Surface, one that runs on Windows 8 RT, and the other, which is more powerful, runs on Windows 8 Pro. That said, only one version of the Surface will gain massive success, and we believe it could likely be the Windows 8 RT version.

The Surface is a tablet that is aimed at competing with the new Apple iPad and the plethora of Android based tablets out in the wild. The Windows 8 RT version of the Surface is perfect for this task, while the Window 8 Pro version is truly not needed. Want Windows 8 Pro? Get an Ultrabook, that's how we view things.

elow are our reasons why the Windows 8 RT version of the Surface will be successful, and why you should consider picking it up instead of the Pro version.

Windows 8 RT is For Tablets

Windows 8 RT is a tablet operating system, mainly because Legacy application will not work, but only those from the Windows Store. Because of this, users will be using more of the touch interface than the normal desktop UI. The normal UI is not built for touch, however, there are some elements there, but it is nothing compared to the tile interface.

With the Windows 8 Pro version of the Microsoft Surface, the device is now more than a tablet and there is nothing much that is wrong with that. However, we are right back at desktop UI again, which is not as touch friendly as the Tile interface. If you want a Windows 8 Pro device to do everything, it is best if an Ultrabook is purchased instead.

Size Matters

Because of the ARM processor inside the Windows 8 RT version of the Surface, the tablet will be considerably thinner and lighter. Compare both tablets side by side and you will realize what we are talking about. The RT version looks that more appealing.

Heat and Battery Life

This is where the Windows 8 RT Surface shines yet again, and shine brightly it does. The ARM CPU inside is much more efficient than the Intel i5 in the Pro. This makes for battery life comparable to the new iPad. One cannot say the same thing about the Pro Surface. Who wants a tablet in their hands or on their lap that is prone to some serious heat? No one, and that's another reason why the Windows 8 RT Surface is right for the tablet user.

Cheaper Pricing

The one thing that will see the RT version of the Surface rise to stardom, is its price. Expect the pricing to be similar to current tablets on the market, while the Pro version will be similar to that of an Ultrabook. Why pay Ultrabook money for a tablet when you can go out and purchase an Ultrabook for the same money that probably has more power inside?

After Windows 8 is launched, we expect many OEMs to release tablets running on ARM, instead of anything Intel has to offer for the sake of keeping prices down to compete with the new iPad. Intel has been trash talking ARM-based Windows 8 tablets. The company thinks legacy applications are that important when in truth, they are not.

Intel will have no choice but to change its tune when the company sees how successful Windows 8 RT has become, and that includes the many naysayers who refuse to buy ARM.
