Blockbuster Exclusive Videos

I have the Blockbuster Freedom Pass (i love it) which enables me to rent as many movies (2@time) from my local store for $29.95 a month. I definitely watch more than 6 movies a month so Blockbuster is getting the short end of the stick on this deal. There are a lot of people that ask me why i don't use Netflix (which i once used when it first came out, but eventually canceled). The reasons are as follows:

1. My mailman sucks, he jams everything into my mailbox and my mail is a crumpled up when i pull it out, this is bad for DVD's (after reading this he will probably wipe his boogers on my mail, which I think he already does).

2. I hate waiting for things.

3. I like the people that work at Blockbuster, they always have good movie recommendations and they always want to know how i liked the movies i rented.

4. The movies are accessible within a very short drive. If i want to sit on my ass all weekend and take in 12 movies (you may say that there aren't that many good movies at blockbuster but perhaps you haven't combed the special interest or foreign section, you probably only listen to top 40 music as well).

5. Movies are like currency, if i pick something up one day and don't watch it and something better just hit the shelf i can trade it out and re-rent it later.

A few weeks ago I saw something that disturbed me. DVD's on the shelf that have some really bad Blockbuster cobranded packaging that screamed low budget made for TV movie. In fact these movies are exclusive to me and the other elitist Blockbuster members.

From a content distribution standpoint it doesn't seem to make sense for a Production company to put all their eggs in one basket. Why would you not want to distribute your films to Netflix and Blockbuster or wherever customers have demand for them? Is this a cry for to have your movies pirated and made available to everyone? And what's with the corny packaging, make the movies look expensive and exclusive if that's what you're aiming at. I didn't even want to pick one up with a pair of BBQ tongs seeing how there were so many of them and they were movies i don't remember being in the theaters. So with all that being said i saw an awesome movie last night that was a Blockbuster exclusive. I wish i could recommend it to everyone but lo siento to my Netflix peeps, not for you. Maybe it's on bit torrent. The movie is appropriately titled "Harsh Times".

Update: After doing some more research on this i came across a story published about a month ago that the NVDA or the National Video Distribution Association was hopping mad about the deal with Blockbuster. Here is an excerpt:

I don't think they said one word to the audience and they spent most of thier set hiding behind their bangs, but they fully blew me away. Stuck in bed. I rarely get sick, it happens like maybe once a year. I am very lucky to be resilient. But today... I feel like i was just smacked with a ton of bricks. My posts are getting less and less interesting. I'm using this stupid blogger widget again because i don't feel like posting any links and i don't feel like adding any pictures. Maybe i was too hard on it yesterday. The Party last night was pretty funny. Alex Williams was breaking it down, the pics are up on flickr... dammit now i want to add a link. shit. this widget does suck.

update: no pics of alex doing the shimmy or whatever the hell that was as of yet on flickr. i think Eric Rice is holding them for ransom. Btw there is a boatload of podcast hotel pics on flickr and i look horrible in each and every one of them, but at least i look like i'm having fun.

update2: i'm here. such a struggle but the fresh air feels good and the processed air in the triple door feels pretty good too.

update: The blogger widget sucks. you can't add pictures and my link didn't work when i posted it. it's handy and it doesn't take very long to stick something up but it needs a few more key features to be really handy, is that possible? is there a correlation between google and blogger?

Seems interesting that the boys over at ODEO would name one of the product features after their company. Honestly I think if i was to goto a site with a button that said "send me an Odeo" i'm not sure i would click on it, what the hell is an ODEO?

I picked this up off of Ev Stones feed today:

The idea is this: You click on that button, and you land on a page where if you have a mic on your computer you can send me a voice message. I'll get the message in my Odeo inbox (and an alert in email). You don't need an Odeo account or anything (unless you want to put the button your page. Which you do.)

Of course i do Ev, this shit is cool! So I went to Odeo's site (after a little searching, you will find it under the manage menu under buttons) i was presented with many multiple button versions to pick from. Fat ones, skinny ones, tall ones, short ones and guess what? Some of them said "Send me an ODEO" and some of them said "Send me a VoiceMail". So perhaps this is a branding experiment. Nothing wrong with seeing what sticks with measurable results I always say. I opted for the one that said leave me a voicemail all magenta with the bird on it (peepit and clickon it, it's on the right). Noah Glass if you're reading this, hook me up with that shirt i hound you about everytime i see you. Brown / Pink Bird size Large, then go ahead and Send me an ODEO!

If you have read this blog in the past you have probably picked up on the fact that i'm obsessed with snowboarding. Yes, it's kind of a sickness. But it makes me so happy. I love being up in the mountains. I like the cold. I even like the wet. But most of all i like carving big lines through untracked cold fluffy powder snow. And not the 32 degree kind of powder, but the 24 degree powder or colder. and not the kind that sits on top of a sheet of ice. right now there is 17" of cold dry powder sitting on top of some fresh snow that fell over the last few weeks. and i sit here and wait patiently. my bag is packed and my clothes are laid out, and much like a fireman i'm waiting for the call and i'll slip on my clothes in one fell swoop and slide down the firepole. i wait for the people who don't love snowboarding as much as me who drive 4 wheel drive vehicles that will never see anything remotely offroad. it's very sad. if you want to stunt with a flashy ride that sits on 22's buy a car that isn't made for offroad or live somewhere where you can't go offroad. and to all the peeps with jeeps, you know who you are and you have no excuse, let's go out and do the sport we all enjoy. with 17" of snow sitting on top of fresh snow, it is your duty to be up there. so patiently (or maybe not so patiently... ) i wait. surfs up you bitches, let's ride....

For some reason i feel compelled to give a snow report. After what was a really dissapointing season last year, this season is really shaping up. it's dumping up at the pass. D-U-M-P-I-N-G. I felt like i should just dig a snowcave and camp out for the night but i decided a hot shower seemed pretty compelling. If anyone wants to go and has something that will get us up there, i'll drive it, let's roll!!!
