At a press event in London yesterday, HTC announced the release of an all new Google Android phone, the HTC Hero! Not only is this new handset running Android but also HTC’s, all new, widget-based operating system – ‘Sense’. This new user interface will provide easily customisable live content in the form of email, SMS and social networking which I’m certain will be expandable with a variety of other downloadable widgets and services.

Along with Android and an all new UI the handset will feature 3G HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, 5mp camera, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack plug, digital compass and a MicroSD card slot. All this will be centred around a 3.2” HVGA touchscreen which apparently uses a new anti-fingerprint coating! On top of this HTC also say that this is going to be the first Android phone to support Flash, straight out the box! Sound pretty promising doesn’t it?

The HTC Hero will be available in Europe in July on Orange and T-Mobile.

Internet searches related to the recycling of mobile phones have almost trebled over the last 12 months. UK Internet searches for a portfolio of mobile phone recycling search terms – such as ‘recycle mobile phones’, ‘mobile phone recycling’ and ‘phone recycling’ – increased by 189% between the week ending 17/05/2008 and the week ending 16/05/2009.

Further proof that money concerns are trumping environmental concerns in the current environment is evident in the decrease in searches for other types of recycling. UK Internet searches for the recycling of other items - including computers, electronics (excluding mobile phones), CDs, clothes and furniture - have fallen by 50% over the last 12 months. Searches for regional recycling centres have also decreased by a third over the same period.

This guest post i written by LaptopLogic.com - a great site to find more informations on smartphones, netbooks and laptops. Also check out their laptop finder section to find out what laptop brand you should go for.

With more than 32 million smartphones sold in the first quarter of 2009 its become obvious that they are here to stay. Many of the smartphones all share the same features, web browsing, media player, calendar, games and more. Most all have QWERTY keyboards and cameras as well. They almost all offer very vibrant screens and offer a sleek design. With everything, there are always slight differences and that is what you should consider when looking at various smart phones. Does the phone work with your PC or Macintosh? Will it connect with existing software you have like Entourage or will it work with all your music and movies you have stored on your laptop? These are things to keep in mind when considering a new phone, especially a smartphone.

Palm Pre Versus Apple iPhone - Popular vs. Practical

There is no doubt that the Apple iPhone is one of the most talked about gadgets, let alone phones, on the market today. At the time it was released it truly changed the landscape of what cell phones can do and offer. It forced every other manufacturer to play catch up. Certainly Palm was forced to do some catching up. The Palm Pre definitely has some great features and did steal some ideas from the iPhone but then every manufacturer has had to steal something from the iPhone. While the Pre uses a sliding keyboard rather than a touch screen like on an Iphone it still does get the job done but still falls a little short of the iPhone. If you are a PC user you may find that the Pre works better with your computer and existing software. The Pre also has a cut and paste feature which the iPhone does not. The Pre will also allow you to both send and receive photos via text, the iPhone does not.

Palm Pre Versus Apple iPhone – The Gadget of the Year

There is no doubt that the iPhone was the gadget of the year. It has become a fashion statement for most people. To some people you just aren’t “cool” unless you have one. The iPhone undoubtedly offers the most features with all the additional applications or “apps” that can be downloaded on the iTunes store. The iPhone has an incredible user interface and software, a sleek design and it’s very user friendly. Both phones offer many of the same features, the iPhone has quite a few bells and whistles but if you’re only interested in a practical phone then they are really in a dead heat. Depending on whom you talk to you will hear a whole variety of responses regarding the Pre, iPhone or any other smartphone out there. The best idea is to go to the store and try some out; hold them, use some of the features and see what works best for you. In the end they are both very reliable, convenient and fun cell phones.

Yesterday the Samsung BeatDJ M7600 launched in the UK and it’s already proving a hot seller according to a few insiders we’ve spoken to.

This is a real music phone with 3.2 MP camera, beat DJ feature and loads of extra features.

The unusual ‘pill’ shaped M7600 is a compact phone and a clever piece of design. It weighs just 99 grams, making it very light, and measures 112×51x13.9mm, so you’ll never have a problem slipping it into your pocket and forgetting about it until it’s needed. The curved ends of the phone itself conceal the stereo speakers, which are enhanced by Bang & Olufsen ICEPower, giving a far better sound when the phone is facing you in landscape orientation, while sitting on the end is a 3.5mm jack plug for your own headphones.

However, it won’t be the pretty design or friendly OS which attracts anyone to the Beat DJ, it will be the flashy music player and its ability to let you create your own tracks! The music player itself has been specially created for the M7600 and takes advantage of the circular control at the base of the touchscreen, which overlaps on to the actual handset case. This iPod-like control deals with the track forward/track back commands, while the display replicates this circle in its centre, allowing you to skip through the song playing. By turning on the Beat DJ feature, this control then lets you scratch, add filters and sound effects plus make fine adjustments to any customisation you’ve added. It’s intuitive enough and with some practice, keen DJ’s should be able to create something quite impressive, which can then be recorded on to the phone.

The phone is codenamed the 100-F from a Latvian manufacturer, new to the mobile phone market, called Lirpa. It seems bizarre, but the phone design has been inspired by the global credit crunch (which must have reached Latvia too), and works as either a coin-operated or credit/debit card mobile. The UK variant will have a £1 coin slot for calls and a 10p slot for texts.

Although the Iphone is pretty cool it still has a long way to go to tick all the boxes. With Iphones being all the rage, Nokia wants a slice of the action so lets see how it compares to the Iphone:

Nokia 5800

Here are a few points that might help you decide:

Cost
This is definitely at the top of the requirements in these tough times. Phones are a luxury item so it needs to be affordable. The Nokia 5800 is cheaper than the Iphone which is a definite plus.

Display
It looks very similar to the iphone but the resolution is better on the Nokia 5800 with 640*360 pixels against 480*320 pixels for the iPhone.

Camera
The Nokia 5800 boasts a 3.2Mpix camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and dual flash whilst the iphone can only muster a basic 2Mpix camera, without flash. Here the 5800 wins hands down!

Music
The Nokia 5800 has its own music store and its apparently free for the first year which is another credit crunch busting point. Although Itunes has been around for a few years now, we all love a bargain and with the increased battery power topping the iphone battery need I say more?!

Video recording
The Nokia 5800 is capable of video recording which is something the Iphone still cant do

MMS

Another point the Nokia 5800 is able to do and the Iphone isn’t

Overall, the Nokia 5800 is the clear winner here don’t you think? The Nokia “iPhone” offers excellent value for money so why not give it a go.

Nokia 5800 deals and Nokia 5800 info.

Samsung has unveiled the Samsung Omnia HD at MWC - we previously thought this was going to be called the Acme but Samsung has gone for the tried & tested Omnia name.

The Samsung Omnia HD and HTC Touch Diamond 2 were unveiled at Mobile World Congress. What do they have to offer compared to the predecessors?

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, HTC took the wraps off their newest phones based on the HTC Touch design. The HTC Touch Diamond 2 (and the accompanying HTC Touch Pro 2) is a feature bump to the original, popular HTC Touch Diamond phone.

Like the original, the new HTC Touch Diamond 2 (specs) is a Windows Mobile phone with an improved graphical interface running on top. In this case, HTC has improved the already-impressive TouchFLO 3D interface, and the new HTC Touch phones will be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 later this year. This upgrade will be free to existing owners, and will for instance add Internet Explorer Mobile 6, Windows Marketplace and the new My Phone cloud service for mobile backup.

At the same time, Samsung announced their newest all-touch smartphone, the Samsung Omnia HD (specs). While the original Omnia was a Windows Mobile device, the new Samsung Omnia HD is a Symbian device running a touch-friendly interface. In fact, the Omnia HD will use the same Samsung TouchWiz interface that we saw on the original Samsung Omnia. The interface relies heavily on desktop-like widgets, and screenshots of the new Samsung Omnia HD show that the phone will retain this design paradigm, albeit on top of Symbian S60.

Meet the Nokia N86, the latest N Series smartphone to be released by the worlds biggest mobile phone manufacturer. The N86 hasn’t been officially announced but it seems to have been intentionally leaked by Nokia to build up some buzz at the MWC this week.

The specifications include a 8 megapixel autofocus camera, obviously using Carl Zeiss optics, and a Xenon flash.

Other features include assisted GPS, a 3,5mm jack plug and a 2.6″ 16 million colour OLED screen, video and music player, Wi-Fi, TV-out, stereo speakers and A2DP Bluetooth.

It’s a smartphone with Symbian S60 3rd Edition and an 8GB internal memory and a MicroSD card slot to increase this to 16GB. The likely launch date is May this year in the UK.

BGR has full details:

The image above is extracted from a Nokia press document covering the background of Nokia’s business relationship with optics master Carl Zeiss. Little beyond the form factor can be ascertained from the document, though an image of the back of the phone does reveal a xenon flash to go along with that much anticipated 8 megapixel shooter. The screen looks to be a bit on the small side which makes us think it will not be touch-enabled but hey - baby steps. Nokia’s new Eseries sets are nice and all but this is the kit we want.
