Today another new security vulnerability was discovered that gives a phone thief use of the Google Wallet prepaid card even if the phone is not rooted.

The Microsoft Store started taking pre-orders a week ago, requiring interested buyers to put down a $25 deposit to secure their Lumia 900. This week, it was revealed that Microsoft was even taking pre-orders for a yet-to-be-announced white version of the phone. The orders were being taken without an official release date or even the price that the Lumia 900 will sell for when it eventually launches on AT&T. Rumors have claimed that the Lumia 900 will arrive mid-March for $99 on-contract, though neither Nokia nor AT&T have confirmed that.

Google also said that the 2.25 percent of per unit sales fee would continue to be the maximum that it would demand from licensees when it completes the purchase of Motorola and absorbs its patent portfolio.

Normally, the service costs $4.99 per month (4.99 GBP in the UK) and offers unlimited access to up to 50 songs at one time and all of the songs that your BBM friends share with you. The new promotion offers the service for free for four months to new users in the U.S., or for six months for those in the UK. BBM Music now boasts a catalog of over 10 million tracks, so most people should be able to find the music they are looking for on it.

Nokia Astound left out of the Nokia Belle upgrade ball

The Astound will remain on Symbian Anna, the version just before Belle, despite the fact that its C7 cousin will get the upgrade. It's not clear who's to blame for this, but we assume its a combination of T-Mobile, Nokia, and the fact that the upgrade to Belle is a hefty 250MB in size.

Rumors have been circulating for months that the iPad 3 will have a faster processor and an improved graphics processing chip (which is a no-brainer) as well as a high-resolution Retina Display. The general appearance of the iPad 3 is not expected to change much from the current iPad 2. As usual, Apple did not comment on the rumors of the expected launch date or specifications of the upcoming device.

While Path has since apologized for this practice and promises to delete the stored user data, it has come to light that this is a fairly common thing among iOS developers, and it happens without the user ever knowing.

The original Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been banned from sale in Germany because of how much it looks like the iPad, which prompted Samsung to released the redesigned 10.1N version.

Google+ for Android updated, still looks lousy on tablets

Unfortunately, the app still looks awful on Android tablets running Android 3.x Honeycomb or 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as there is a sea of white space and poor use of the larger screen real estate. The tablet complaints aside, the updated app now lets users see who +1'd a post or comment, provides access to the new What's Hot! stream, and offers other navigation enhancements. The updated Google+ app can be downloaded for free from the Android Market now.

In addition to facing intense opposition from the GPS industry, LightSquared is now getting heat from the aviation industry, which has decided to throw its hat into the ring.

Users can now limit the amount of data consumed by lines on their account, which apps and games are accessed, and block ringtone purchases. These new features join the other voice and messaging limits that were already a part of Usage Controls. The Usage Controls feature costs an additional $4.99 per line per month on top of a regular voice plan.

The move will put Nokia's manufacturing plants closer to its component suppliers, which are all based out of Asia. A result of the reorganization will be the loss of 4,000 jobs from the three European plants that used to make Nokia's smartphones. Nokia says the job cuts will be phased in through the course of the year.

The carrier also reported that 66 percent of its post-paid subscribers are now carrying smartphones, which gives it the highest smartphone mix among the top four carriers in the U.S. today. Sprint reported selling 1.8 million iPhones in Q4, though it still posted a $1.3 billion loss for the quarter due to the higher cost of subsidizing the iPhone and building out its network.

LightSquared wants GPS devices built to a standard

LightSquared has long argued that the receivers in GPS devices have been sloppily made and they "listen in" on frequencies outside of the range of GPS services - LightSquared's own frequencies to be exact. The GPS industry has been able to stall LightSquared from deploying its network because of the apparent interference that it would cause with current GPS devices. Of course, should the FCC adopt such a standard for GPS devices, it would take years to implement, and it would do nothing for the millions of devices already in use.

There's also sync support with Chrome for the desktop which gives mobile users access to not only desktop bookmarks, but the tabs that the desktop browser currently has loaded, as well.

Adobe has confirmed that Chrome for Android does not support its Flash plug-in. This doesn't come as too much of a surprise since Adobe announced last year that it would stop developing Flash Player for mobile devices. The company does note that the standard Android browser does support Flash Player for the time being.

What we didn't know at the time was how much the unlocked Lumia 800 would cost or when it would actually be available for purchase. According to information obtained by The Verge, purchasing the Lumia 800 might demand more from prospective buyers' wallets than they initially expected.

Samsung used lower-cost LTE chip in Galaxy Nexus

As technology progresses, the cost of components usually goes down over time, and that appears to have happened with the LTE baseband chip that Samsung chose to use in the recently-launched Google Galaxy Nexus for Verizon Wireless. According to ABI Research, the new LTE chip offers the same high-speed data performance as older chips, but clocks in at just over half the original's $23 price tag. This means that it should be easier for manufacturers to bring LTE smartphones downmarket and offer them at lower price points - something we have already started to see happen with the Pantech Burst and Samsung Exhilarate for AT&T, both of which cost less than $50 on-contract.

Originally offered during the holiday shopping season last year, the double data promotion offers 4G LTE smartphone customers 4GB of data for the same price that usually gets 2GB of data - $30 per month. The promotion only applies to those with 4G LTE smartphones, so 3G users (including iPhone owners) will not be able to take advantage of it. Also launching on Friday is the Motorola DROID 4, which will be eligible for the promotion. Verizon Wireless did not provide a date as to when the promotion will end, but it did say that will be available for a limited time.

Verizon Wireless launching Motorola DROID 4 LTE smartphone this Friday for $199.99

The DROID 4 is the latest in the line of original DROID smartphones, and is the first one to sport 4G LTE connectivity. Borrowing a number of design cues from the DROID RAZR, the DROID 4's battery is non-removable. The physical QWERTY keyboard that defines the DROID line has been redesigned with five rows of edge-lit keys for easier readability, and though the DROID 4 will launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Verizon promises that an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in the near future. The DROID 4 is also compatible with Motorola's Lapdock 500 Webtop accessory that turns the smartphone into a netbook replacement. Customers can order the DROID 4 online or buy it in-store when it launches at the end of this week.

Even more curious is that you can order the Lumia 900 in either black or white, the latter of which was not announced as a color option when the Lumia 900 was revealed at CES 2012 last month.

This has led many to believe that the phone is still using their plan's minutes even after they are done with a call. Nokia has acknowledged the issue, but insists it is not as serious as many are led to believe.

Included within Sprint's grand plan to transition to a 4G LTE network in the near future is the practice of slowly shutting down the iDEN network that currently runs its Nextel services. Sprint has been transitioning its push-to-talk users to a CDMA-based system for the past year so that it can free up the spectrum that iDEN currently occupies (800MHz block). As a courtesy to the users still utilizing the iDEN network, Sprint has set up a website that has information as to when it plans to deactivate the iDEN towers. To start, Seattle and San Francisco will see tower reductions in April, followed by New York City in May, and Miami in June. Sprint notes that the iDEN service is not being totally shut down, but customers can expect to see reduced coverage areas. The carrier's CDMA network is unaffected by these tower reductions.
