Its been pretty quiet on the WP7 phone front recently, so its a breath of fresh air to see leaked pictures of the next WP7 phone from HTC, the Eternity on the interwebs. The Eternity is packing a 4.7inch display, 1.5GHz processor, 8MP camera, 1.3MP front facing camera, 720p movie capabilities, DLNA support as well as 16GB of storage. There is no word on when or in fact where this phone will be released, but to make full use of the front facing camera, let's just say after Microsoft drops the Mango update shall we? Let's just hope it doesn't take an Eternity to get to our shores.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

Building on the success of Xperia Arc that was released earlier this year, Sony Ericsson has just announced two more new devices under their Xperia series during a media event just few hours ago here in Singapore. Named as Xperia Ray and Xperia Active, both devices are designed to cater different types of consumer.

Powered by 1.0GHz processor, it runs on Android 2.3 a.k.a Gingerbread operating system and comes with a 3.3-inch touch screen that Sony Ericsson dubbed as Reality Display which is equipped with Mobile Bravia hardware accelerator. Just like the Xperia Arc, the new Xperia Ray comes with an Exmor R CMOS sensor for its 8.1-megapixels camera but not for its front-facing VGA camera though. It also boasts a slim profile design with a body that is 9.4mm thin.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active

Moving on, the Xperia Active comes with the same 1.0GHz processor, a Reality Display with Mobile Bravia engine and Android 2.3 operating system just like the Xperia Ray with the exception of a smaller 3.0-inch touch screen and a standard 5-megapixel camera without the Exmor sensor. Since it is designed to cater active lifestyle, the Xperia Active is dust-proof and is able to stay underwater up to 1m in depth for 30 minutes.

In addition to that, the Xperia Active touch display is able to track one’s fingers even though they or the display itself are wet. The Xperia Active also comes together with active lifestyle-oriented apps such as Walk Mate and iMapMyFitness well as the ability to connect to heart-rate monitor through ANT+ wireless technology. It also comes with accessories made for active lifestyle such as a wrist strap and an arm case right inside the box.

What Will it Look Like?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal suggested that Verizon is planning to offer Apple's iPhone in early 2011.

There was yet another Apple rumor in the Journal's piece: According to "people briefed on the phone," Apple is currently working on its next-generation iPhone, unofficially called the "iPhone 5" or "iPhone 5G."

The Wall Street Journal wrote, "One person familiar said the fifth-generation iPhone would be a different form factor than those that are currently available, said one person familiar with the new iPhone plan [sic]. It was unclear how soon that version would be available to Verizon or other carriers."

Although the tight-lipped Apple has made no mention of an "iPhone 5," there has been speculation aplenty. Here's what people are saying about Apple's (rumored) next generation iPhone:

CNET's David Carnoy lists the most important features that an iPhone 5 should have. His top five include 4G network compatibility, a brand new operating system (iOS 5), fewer failed and dropped calls, more carriers in addition to AT&T (Verizon, for example), better battery life, and improved 3D graphics.

Fast Company says that the iPhone 5 could be RFID-enabled, meaning it will function like a credit card. "[Y]ou'll be able to pay wirelessly by waving [the phone] over a panel at the point of sale," Fast Company explains, citing a design patent submitted by Apple.

TechRadar predicts that Apple will announce the fifth-generation iPhone next summer: "Apple's established a rhythm with iPhone releases, with new models appearing in late June or early July each year. It's a safe bet that the iPhone 5 release date will also be late June or early July."

iLounge speculates there is also a slim chance the device could get a January 2011 release date, which would be the most effective way to finally kill the iPhone 4's "antennagate" reception issues.

Presumably, the iPhone 5 would also address the "death grip" reception issues reported by many iPhone 4 users, as well as the durability of the phone's glass screen. Gdgt speculates that "glassgate" could be next for the iPhone 4: "Apple has apparently found that non-bumper style cases -- specifically those that slide onto the iPhone 4, which are occasionally prone to particulate matter getting caught between the rear of the phone and the case -- can cause unexpected scratching that could quickly develop into full-on cracking or even much larger fracturing of the entire rear pane of glass."

LG Optimus 3D Android smartphone

LG goes 3D without any fancy naming conventions, rolls out Optimus 3D

We first caught glimpse of this 3D-screen rocking smartphone from LG back in Barcelona during MWC2011, and still distinctively remember how the spokes person played down the availability since the unit on display was "just a prototype". Today however, that tune has changed as LG just released a statement which says the LG Optimus 3D will be available in Europe and in 60 other countries over the next few weeks.

Powered by a dual-core processor and running on Android 2.2 Froyo, the highlight of the Optimus 3D is definitely the 4.3-inch Parallax Barrier Technology 3D screen. In plain English, this technology allows you to view 3D content on the device without the need for any 3D glasses, much like how the displays on jackpot machines and advertising boards operate. The Optimus 3D will also come with a 3D-ready camera which will allow you to shoot 2D imagery in 1080p resolution and 3D content in 720p resolution.

As usual, no Malaysian release date or recommended retail price has been issued yet.

Apple escalates patent war with Samsung

Ongoing battle over iPhone and iPad patents could stop sale of Samsung devices, and allow Apple to negotiate favourable settlement

Apple has upped the ante in its ongoing patent war with Samsung with a refined and expanded claim that could lay the ground for an injunction stopping the sale of a large number of the South Korean firm’s Android-based devices such as the Galaxy Tab (pictured left) and Samsung Captivate.

The updated claim uses stronger language, and also now refers to forthcoming Samsung devices such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and Galaxy S II, and a range of 4G devices designed to take advantage of next generation data services.

Apple has said it is considering whether to press for a preliminary injunction against Samsung which could stop the sale of existing Samsung products and delay the launch forthcoming devices.

A recent patent dispute between LG and Sony led to tens of thousands of PlayStation 3 consoles being seized by European customs officials.

If Samsung believed a court would be likely to grant a preliminary injunction, it would put Apple in a commanding position from which to negotiate a settlement quickly. The battle between the firms has surprised some, as Samsung is one of Apple’s biggest component suppliers.

Apple’s claim, originally filed in April, refers to both hardware and software patents as well as the overall look and feel of devices such as the iPhone and iPad (pictured right). The original 38 page claim now covers 63 pages.

Samsung initially responded to Apple’s original claim with countersuits in South Korea, Japan and Germany, and later also filed a countersuit in California, where Apple’s orignal claim was filed.

As a result of Apple’s claim, Samsung has been told to provide the firm’s lawyers with access to devices such as the Galaxy S2, which have not yet been released in the US.

As a result, Samsung has filed a request for its lawyers to be given access to the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 to enable it to assess Apple’s adherence to a specific design style, despite the fact that neither device has been announced.

Samsung argues such disclosure is necessary to respond to allegations that it is copying Apple’s design across its range of devices.

Apple’s revised claim comes just days after the firm settled a patent dispute with Nokia. As a result of the settlement, Apple agreed to pay a lump sum and regular royalties for patents held by the Finnish mobile maker.

The settlement is expected to provide a much-needed boost Nokia’s results for the current quarter.

High-end N9 and three entry-level phones revealed as manufacturer pledges to bring up to 10 Symbian-based smartphones to market in the next year

Nokia has said it is making “significant progress” on the new strategy it set out earlier this year following a string of handset announcements and developments at its Nokia Connection 2011 event in Singapore.

The N9 (pictured) comes with a 3.9-inch AMOLED screen made with scratch resistant glass and eight-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss autofocus sensor with HD-quality video capture.

A swipe gesture has replaced the home key so when a user is in an application, swiping from the edge of the display takes it to the home screen.The phone features turn-by-turn drive and walk voice navigation with a new navigation app for drivers. It also features Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities.

The N9 will be available later this year in black, cyan and magenta and will come in 16GB and 64GB models. Pricing will be announced in due course.

The C2-02, C2-03 and C2-06 will launch with Series 40. The C2-03 is a dual-SIM handset to allow users to personalise up to five SIM cards.

All three ship with new Nokia Maps for Series 40, where local maps and places of interest are pre-installed on the phone so users can view maps and plan routes when the phone is in offline mode.

They all come with an FM radio, media player and memory support that can be expanded to 32GB. The C2-06 will cost €80 (£71) on prepay while the C2-02 and C2-03 will cost €75 (£66). All will be released in Q3.

Nokia also reaffirmed its commitment to Symbian by stating that it will start shipping N8s, E7s, C7s and C6-01s with the new Symbian Anna software update. By the end of August, existing owners of these devices can also download Symbian Anna and over the next 12 months it plans to bring up to 10 new Symbian-based smartphones to market.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said: “Earlier this year, we outlined a comprehensive strategy to change our course. Innovation is at the heart of our strategy, and today we took important steps to demonstrate a new pace of innovation at Nokia. It’s the beginning of a new era for Nokia.”

In a startling development, a hobbyist named Jamie Fuller, has seem to have accidentally found a way for a multitouch application to work on the Nokia 5800 aka The Tube.
While he was just trying to write a simple Guitar Hero clone for the 5800, he realize in order to make it work, he would need multitouch to hit the notes at the same time and walla... it worked!
Don't get you hopes too high yet as the application is still in its testing stage and Jamie needs some help yet to get his frankly "Iphone Killer" app out.

Motorola Introduces New MOTOMOBILE Range of Handsets

W375

W210

The W210 combines versatility and style with robust features to create a stunning new handset in the CDMA portfolio. With a striking two tone appearance and colourful wallpaper options, the W210 extends Motorola's design philosophy across the MOTOMOBILE platform. The handset has a built in stereo FM radio offering real-time access to information and entertainment on the move The W210 also comes with Motorola's Lantern feature for illumination at night or in dark environments.

W170

The W170 further extends the CDMA porfolio. Measuring a slender 14.6mm thick, the W170 features FM radio, 32 level polyphonic sound, up to 500 phonebook entries, SMS and an office quality speakerphone.

SPAM - SCAM Messages Awareness & Guideliness

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has proposed several measures to clamp down on spam. MCMC issued a discussion papers in which it listed out several proposals to combat the incidence of unsolicitied e-mail and SMS (short message service).

The proposals include formulating a definition of spam for regulatory purposes, imposing mandatory measures on service providers, and a multi-tier plan to resolve spam-related complaints and disputes. If the problem recurs or becomes excessive, MCMC suggested that users lodge complaints with service providers, failing which a complaint could be lodged with the Consumer Forum, or with the Content Forum for issues related to the content of the unsolicited messages. As a final recourse, users could complain to MCMC. To combat spam originating from overseas, MCMC proposed efforts to initiate the setting up of regional and “possibly” global collaborative alliances with foreign regulators, service providers, non-government organisations, and related projects and initiatives in other parts of the world.

Promoting services via SMS is gaining popularity because of the mobile penetration rate in Malaysia has surpassed 100%. However because of the non-existence of the specific guideline regarding the SMS promotions, the SMS for advertising has become free for all industry. As an association we would like to develop and nurture this new advertising channel so it would not be misused and cast a negative impression from the public. Enclosed is a proposed guideline on the SMS Promotion that should be adhered to by all the CPs.

The common and standardised guidelines between TELCO and MCMC to the consumers are:

Additional Information

OFF PROMO - Stop all promotions (non-chargeable)

Above commands are also applicable for promotion types of SMS messages.

With this method, only one database should be maintained for each telco. All the SMS promo via 6 series will consult this database first before broadcast. Enabling reply to 6 series will make it easier for the recipient to Opt-Out without the need to send to a 3 series shortcode.

Note: Above commands are agreed by the commision as FREE OF CHARGE and telecommuncations operator has no authority to charge the consumer for above listed commands.
