Bij de release van DSM 4.0 was er van de client software alleen een versie voor Windows beschikbaar. Vanaf nu is de client ook voor Mac beschikbaar.

De client is hier te downloaden. Let wel even op dat je in DSM de Cloud Station Package installeert en configureert voor je met de client aan de slag gaat.

Tot nu toe zag Headphones er wat ouderwets uit, maar door de inspanningen van Elmar Kouwenhoven is dat nu verleden tijd. Elmar heeft de laatste weken besteed aan het maken van een compleet nieuwe interface die er naar mijn bescheiden mening fantastisch uitziet.

Daarnaast is er Last.FM integratie toegevoegd voor ontbrekende covers en artiest bio’s.

Om de nieuwe versie binnen te halen open je Headphones en klik je bovenin op ‘update’.

DSM zelf kan uiteraard via het configuratiescherm worden bijgewerkt. De packages moeten apart worden bijgewerkt in Package Center.

Iedereen met een iPhone weet dat met name Couchpotato en Sick Beard zich lastig laten bedienen op een iPhone. Op een iPad gaat het uiteraard al beter, maar optimaal is anders. Bij Couchpotato verdwijnt het zoekveld bijvoorbeeld achter de andere knoppen als je een film wilt zoeken.

De app qouch biedt hier een oplossing. Dit is een enkele app waar je zowel SABnzbd, Couchpotato en Sick Beard mee kunt bedienen in iOS stijl. Hieronder een paar screenshots.

Een USB schijf voor backup doeleinden is voor de meeste gebruikers de meest haalbare oplossing, maar hier kleven een paar stevige nadelen aan: zo lang de schijf is aangesloten loopt de schijf zelf ook risico in geval van kortsluiting, brand, waterschade en diefstal, dus na elke backup moet de schijf zorgvuldig opgeborgen worden. Dit heeft echter tot gevolg dat je niet een automatische backup kunt instellen, en je dus als gebruiker goed moet gaan opletten dat je regelmatig een backup maakt. Dit scenario lijkt haalbaar, maar in de praktijk maakt men de eerste paar weken netjes een backup en daarna versloft dit naar maandelijks en dan opeens na een half jaar bedenk je dat het weer eens tijd wordt voor een backup. Natuurlijk heb je de backup dan nodig op het moment vlak daarvoor en ben je voor een half jaar aan data kwijt.

Nu kun je een Synology laten backuppen naar een tweede Synology. Goed voor onze omzet uiteraard, maar het heeft eigenlijk pas echt zin als de tweede Synology fysiek een flink eind uit de buurt van de eerste staat en de backup via internet verloopt. Nu hebben de meeste mensen geen tweede locatie tot hun beschikking, dus dan zal de tweede NAS elders in huis geplaatst worden. Beter dan niets, maar niet optimaal. Heb je een tweede locatie tot je beschikking dan is dit uiteraard een uitstekende oplossing. Een alternatief is ‘kruislings backuppen’ met een vriend of kennis die ook een Synology  heeft. Dit heeft echter weer als nadeel dat de vriend in kwestie bij je data kan, en vriend of niet, dat blijft toch altijd minder prettig. Om dit te voorkomen kun je in principe je gedeelde mappen versleutelen (standaard functie in DSM), want dan is de backup ook versleuteld. Dit zal echter ongetwijfeld weer negatieve gevolgen voor de algehele performance van je NAS hebben.

Een laatste en zeer interessant alternatief is backuppen naar een online dienst. Synology ondersteunt standaard backups naar Amazon S3, en dmv. de HiDrive Package, beschikbaar in Package Center, ook naar Strato HiDrive. De abonnementen van Amazon en Strato verschillen in prijs, maar ook in afreken methode. Bij Amazon betaal je per gebruikte gigabyte terwijl je bij Strato vaste staffels hebt van 20, 50, 100, 500 en 1000GB.

Bij Amazon S3 betaal je $ 0,125 per GB per maand. Op het moment van schrijven vertaalt dat naar € 0,095 per GB per maand. De eerste 5GB krijg je het eerste jaar gratis. Bij HiDrive is er ook een gratis abonnement voor 5GB, maar voor zover ik heb kunnen achterhalen werkt die niet samen met de HiDrive Package omdat rsync ontbreekt.

Strato HiDrive is er vanaf € 3,90 per maand voor 20GB tot € 39,90 per maand voor 1000GB. Gebruik je meer dan 50GB dan is Strato HiDrive goedkoper dan Amazon S3. Daarnaast is Strato ook echt in Nederland gevestigd wat de communicatie uiteraard wat makkelijker maakt.

Bij QNAP staat deze schijf inmiddels op de compatibility list. Synology zal ongetwijfeld snel volgen, maar is vooralsnog niet officieel bevestigd. Ook niet officieus overigens.
