Motorola Profits and Sales Enhanced by 600% in Q2 Over Last Year

Motorola Q2 profits boosted by an overwhelming 600% in comparison to same quarter last year, thanks to the launch of Droid. Motorola managed to ship 8.3 million phones in the last three months thrashing both own and various analyst's estimations.

The profit earned during the same period is 1$62 million compared to mere $26 million last year. This doesn't include the sales of Droid X which is likely to shoot up the profits even further. The next quarter that is Q3 is expected to be even better for Motorola as the estimates are about 30% more profits for company.

Sprint to Update HTC EVO 4G with Android 2.2 Froyo From August 3

Sprint has managed to achieve which others so far are dreaming and that is bringing the Android 2.2 Froyo to its folds. It has announced to update the HTC EVO 4G starting from August 3 and it is expected that by August 15, all EVO 4G users will get this update.

"Sprint is thrilled with our customer's response to HTC EVO 4G and the innovative and exciting experience if offers," said Fareb Adib, VP, Product Development for Sprint. "It is exciting for us to lead the industry in bringing the Android 2.2 update to these customers and improve on the amazing experience they receive with America's first 4G capable phone."

The Android 2.2 Froyo will bring the following feature enhancements:-

Voice dialing over Bluetooth.
App Storage on External memory, giving users more storage room for all their apps.
Camera 4 way rotation allows the camera icons to rotate with camera.
Improved browser performance including a faster JavaScript engine and Flash 10x support improving the user's ability to view videos and available content associated with we pages.

The update will be very easy to download since the users will receive notification that Android 2.2 is available for download. It will have very easy installation procedures when then the update is downloaded. So August 3 is just around the corner and you never know that you are the first lucky one to get this update if you are using the HTC EVO 4G.

iPhone 4's FaceTime has Potential for Porn?

Over the years, porn industry has been benefiting from webcams for live sex-chats on the internet but the launch of FaceTime from Apple has surely opened up a new avenue for adult entertainment companies to develop video-sex chats.

This may not be a good news for Steve Jobs and Apple who usually takes a lot of pains to keep its iPhone apps clean and porn free by rejecting even book apps for featuring sexual contents. But FaceTime is such a service which can be very intimidating for porn industry and the use of iPhone 4 for porn cannot be overruled. The same holds good for the HTC EVO 4G which also allows video chats.

This situation is surely not good for Apple and there is a need to check such like activities because in worst scenarios, it can easily connect children to pornography or predators. Lets hope for the best.

Reports of Google Search Blocked in China?

It has been reported by associated press that Google search has been completely blocked in China. Although Google says that it was just a minor glitch and all services are working properly in mainland China. There is a complete contradiction in these two statements. The following figure shows that Gmail was not affected at all during this saga.

It is pertinent to mention that Google has been cooperating with Chinese government sensor policies for the last four years but the Google recent pledge in January to no longer censor search results considered to be subversive pornographic. It appears the the Chinese government has finally lost patience with Google for violating its censor policies and this action will surely hit Google very hard financially since China's 400 million web surfers exceeds the entire US population.

Nintendo to Make Important Product Announcement on September 29

Nintendo has announced the September 29 date for unveiling certain important information about its product. There are no further details available since the company is very tight lipped on the issue.

The expected announcement may include the launch date and pricing of Nintendo 3DS since so far that is rumored to be between $249 and $299 and may come up between October and March 2011. So far these all are speculations. Lets hope that the company confirms these details about the Nintendo 3DS on September 29.

Nokia N8 Available for Pre-Order in Italy to be Shipped by End September

The Nokia N8 is up for pre-order in Italy. The phone will be made available by end September. The asked price is €469 or $610 which may sound a hell lot of money for this phone.

We know that the announced price previously was €370 but that was without taxes and pre carrier subsidy. So Europe has got quite lots of taxes and stuff like that on mobile phones. The pre-order is not up in any other place so we will update you when we come across any such like development.

Lookout Introduced App Genome Project to Warn User About App Threats

Lookout launched this project primarily for security threat identification and provide information about various apps which access personal data and other phone resources. The glaring example being the Jackeey Wallpaper app on Android which collects browsing history, text messages, voicemail password and SIM ID of the user and sends it to a mysterious site in China. This app so far has been downloaded by millions of users.

Early findings of data being accessed by Android and iPhone apps by Lookout include the following:-

29% of free apps on Android have the capability to access user's location, compared with 33% of free apps on iPhone.
Nearly twice as many free apps have the capability to access user's contact data on iPhone 14% as compared with Android 8%.
47% of free Android apps include third party code, while that number is 23% on iPhone.

So if you download the Lookout security app, it will warn you about those apps which fiddle with your personal data. But in addition to that you should also read the privacy warnings which Android shows before you download an app.

Sprint Reported Loss of $760 Million in Q2

Despite the launch of HTC EVO 4G through Sprint network and its overwhelming success, the cellular company lost $760 million in Q2. This figure is much less than various expectations of various analysts.

Analysts predicted 17 cent loss for the company but the present loss though is still quite huge but much less than that figure by 2 cents at 15 cents. It is pertinent to mention that the company has the best year-over-year improvement in net postpaid subscribers which enhanced that figure by 110,000 with a total of 48.2 million.

Amazon Announced Cheaper and Lighter Kindle

The previous version of Amazon Kindle went out of stock a few days back and now the reason has been made known to the world by Amazon. Amazon has announced to launch a much cheaper and lighter Kindle than the existing ones.

"We developed this device for serious readers. At these price points, it may be much broader than that," said Jeff Bezos the Chief Executive of Amazon. "People will buy them for their kids. People won't share Kindles any more."

The new Kindle is almost 15% lighter and 21% smaller than the previous version. It has the same 6-inch display but with 50% better contrast like the Kindle DX. It also include a new feature an experimental WebKit browser. The internal storage has been doubled to 4GB which is capable of holding about 3,500 books. It has a battery life of about one month and with Wi-Fi on the battery will last up to 10 days.

The new Kindle is available in two models. The Wi-Fi only model will cost $139 while the Wi-Fi 3G version utilizing AT&T network will cost $189. Both these versions will be available for pre-orders from Thursday and shipping will begin on August 27. It will be made available in almost 140 countries. A user over at Alldroid has packaged up a simple and easy rooting tool for Windows users. This is a simple GUI program to root or unroot your Droid X. This application installs all the files and drivers necessary for rooting the Droid X and just have two simple buttons, Root Me and UnRoot Me.

Simple download the file and follow the instructions, you will be rooted your Droid X in seconds.

Apple Updates Safari 5, Extentions Gallery now Open

Apple has released the Safari 5.0.1 which is the latest update of Safari 5. Its Extension Gallery is now open and can be traced here. These extensions were introduced by Apple for developers in June which can be created with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. These extensions include Amazon, eBay, Bing, MLB.com, the New york Times and Twitter for Safari.

"Safari 5 has been a big hit, and user response to the innovative new Safari Reader has been fantastic," said Brian Croll, VP of Apple OS X Product Marketing. "We are thrilled to see so many leading developers creating great extensions and think our users are going to love being able to customize Safari."

The extension gallery can be downloaded from here. These extensions can be automatically updated and users can enable or disable a particular extension or turn off all the extensions. Motorola Promotional Ad Hits the iPhone 4 Antenna Woes

Motorola has almost waged war on Apple with their latest Droid X ad which appeared in the New York Times this morning. This ad targeted the iPhone 4 antenna woes for which various solutions like jackets, cases, shields etc have already been suggested.

This ad has the basic slogan "No jacket required". The ad further promotes its product by explaining as follows:-

At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn't have to dress up their phone for it to work properly. That's why the Droid X comes with a dual antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket. For us it's just one of those things that comes a given when you've been making mobile phones for over 30 years.

Well any one can guess whom Motorola is pointing to when it talks about jackets for making clear calls. Lets hope Apple takes this ad positively and comes up with a permanent solution to its antenna woes.

Next Gen iPod Touch with Camera Spotted Again in the Wild

The next generation iPod touch prototype has again surfaced and this time in a photograph and much scratched with a back camera. There are no further information visible on the back of this prototype such as storage etc.

We previously posted about the camera of next generation iPod touch here and here with some other information. The one seen in the picture above seems like a third generation prototype but we are not so sure and will update you as soon as we have some concrete information.

Is iOS 4.1 Beta Solution to iPhone 4's Proximity Sensor?

Apple released the iOS 4.1 Beta 2 for developers and with its installation the proximity sensor issues are no more there. It has been tried by many developers and they didn't experience any call drops or hang ups like it was there before.

Steve Jobs during his press conference said that a software update will be launched soon to fix this proximity senor problems of iPhone 4 and it seems the solution lies in the new iOS 4.1 which when launched as firmware for public will resolve the mystery.

AT&T to be the Premier Windows Phone 7 Carrier

AT&T's major client so far has been the Apple's iPhones and a handful of Android phones but now they are claiming to be the premier Windows Phone 7 carrier as well which is an excellent sign for their growth as a network in USA.

A spokesman of AT&T informed pcworld of this development and claimed, "We'll be the premier carrier for Windows Phone 7. We haven't given guidance on timing." Moreover, a well known Altimeter Group analyst Michael Gartenberg also twitted that AT&T has signed up to buy 8 million Windows Phone 7 devices.

So all these indicators add strength to AT&T claims and we also hope that WP7 should give tough time to iPhone 4 so that the sense of competition results in better products in future.

This is not the case for Canada since the customers can get the SIM of the choice cellular network and also use the phone in any country.

The price is a bit high though as the 8GB iPhone 3GS will cost $549, 16GB $659 and 32GB $753 Canadian dollars. But at least it is hassle free and users can get a SIM costing around $10 from any network.

It will be launched though three networks as well namely Bell, Rogers and Telus with only the Apple Store offering the contract free devices. With two years contract from any of the network carriers, it will cost $199. So choice is yours.

Updated Apple's Mac Pro Expected Tomorrow

We reported that Apple's Mac Pros are not available in Apple Stores and other retail stores. Now we have received an unconfirmed report that Apple is coming up with updated Mac Pros which may be coming as early as tomorrow.

The expected updates are as under:

Speedbumped iMacs (Core i3 OS X).
Magic Trackpad.
27-inch 16:9 Cinema Display.

We will have to wait and see whether these rumors are true or not after all its just a day to go.

Augen appears to be a new company jumping in the tablet world. The Kmart weekly circular revealed that the Augen Tablet will be available later this week in Kmart shops. The tablet appears to be very attractive and within a very affordable range as well.

The Augen Tablet has the following features:-

256 MB RAM.
2GB storage.
7-inch display.
Wi-Fi.
Access to Android App Store.

This tablet has a price tag of $149.99 which is a very attractive deal in view of the features mentioned above. The company also boasts $89, TheBook e-reader with 7-inch LCD with Linux OS as shown in the video after jump.
