The E61 is one of Nokia's new business-centric Eseries of devices, and is the first Nokia phone to sport the popular "BlackBerry" form factor that has been so popular in the United States for years. As an Eseries device, the E61 comes complete with remote management capabilities, a SIP compatible Voice Over IP client, as well as support for a large number of push email vendor solutions. The E61 also runs the 3rd edition of the Nokia S60 user interface over top of the Symbian v9.1 operating system, which means that there is a lot of 3rd party application support for the device.

The sleek E61 is all business.

The two most dominating features of the E61 are its large 320x240 pixel display and its equally spacious QWERTY keyboard. The landscape formatted QVGA display is bright and colorful - capable of displaying up to 16 million different color shades. The keyboard makes use of somewhat loose fitting plastic keys that, while seeming a bit cheap at first, are actually quite comfortable to use. Each key is decently large, and there are a number of shift, function, and other keys that allow the user quick access to letters, numbers, symbols, and even foreign characters. Above the keypad are a number of other keys, including two large softkeys, a pair of equally large call send/end keys, a fine joystick, and dedicated menu and messaging app buttons.

As a business oriented device, it is not all that surprising that the Nokia E61 lacks a digital camera of any sort. It does, however, sport a very nice music player application and a miniSD memory card slot. The music player has the ability to sort tracks based on things like artist and album, and allows for the creation of playlists from a PC or directly on the phone. The E61's wonderful web browser is capable of properly rendering just about any site on the internet, thanks to full CSS and javascript support. The browser supports zooming in and out, easy panning around large pages, and a visual back/forward function.

The E61's QWERTY keyboard is easy to type on.

One of the E61's most compelling traits is its support for most of the major wireless networks. For starters, the E61 has fantastic 802.11g WiFi support, for extra fast web browsing and email access. When out of the home or office, EDGE and UMTS 3G data (where available) are also at the user's disposal. In terms of shorter range connections, Bluetooth, USB, and infrared are also available.

The E61's large display and vast capabilities come at a price in terms of power, necessitating the use of a large and somewhat heavy 1500mAh battery in order to obtain its very respectable 8 hours of talk time in our GSM band tests. The E61 can also be used on European UMTS 3G networks as well, but will get slightly less talk time performance when doing so. Audio quality was a bit above average when used in regular calls, but the built-in speakerphone function is one of the best we have ever tested.

While the early E61 that we tested had some quirks with its IMAP email support when configured for automatic download, most corporate users will likely be very pleased with the device's support for the following push email based systems: BlackBerry Connect, GoodLink, Nokia Business Center, Seven Mobile Mail, Seven Always-On Mail, and Visto Mobile. The MMS and SMS systems are top notch, and worked as well as the rest of the messaging applications.

With its wide array of connectivity and messaging options, comfortable keyboard, and large display, the Nokia E61 is the perfect companion for corporate raiders busy home office types alike. The built-in applications are all very well done, and the availability of plenty of 3rd party apps will help each individual user fill in any perceived gaps in functionality. In short, the Nokia E61 is an excellent choice for a business centric mobile phone.

Nokia, which has long shied away from releasing thin devices, has today announced its entry to the ever-crowded thin handset market with the new N76. Nokia states that it did not want to compromise on features just to shave thickness off the device, and as such, this 14mm (0.5") thick handset boasts some impressive specifications when compared to its rivals.The new Nokia N76 runs the S60 v3 UI on top of the Symbian OS, and so includes all the smartphone features that users have come to expect from the company's Nseries. The folder design holds music control keys underneath the 160x128 pixel resolution external display, and conceals a 16 million color capable 2.4" QVGA resolution internal screen that can also be used in a landscape orientation. A 2.0 megapixel camera is present to satisfy the shutterbugs among us, with 26MB of internal memory and microSD memory expansion supporting up to 2GB cards to store all your photos and music. With UMTS 3G high-speed data and Bluetooth v2.0, the Nokia N76 should satisfy most on the connectivity front. Despite the feature list, the Nokia N76 tips the scales at just 115g (4.1oz).

This is the best mobile I've had, and I've had several over the past 15 years. It looks great and, even more importantly, works well. It's also the first Nokia I've owned, having had poor experiences with two preceding brands. I use the phone for business so extras such as the MP3 place are nice to have but not vital.

Pros: Clear speech (both caller and called). This was a No. 1 priority - a new phone had to have clear speech. Exceptionally poor clarity was the main reason I scrapped a 12 month old Samsung D600. The N76 doesn't have speech clarity circuitry but it's excellent all the same. Has a great MP3 player with ample volume. Voice dialling, neat size, clam-shell form factor, 3.5mm standard headphone socket.

It synchronises with Outlook. This works efficiently and it's easy to find a date and read the appointment. It's not so easy to amend an appointment, but I can do that on the PC after I return home. I no longer take my PDA to appointments - the N76 is more than adequate on the road. A minor quibble is that it is not possible to sync calender and to-do list independently. I don't need the to-do list on the phone but you don't get a choice.

Cons: Expensive. The front screen is prone to showing fingerprints. Some users may need to use fingernails to operate keys as they are rather small (not a serious shortcoming). Doesn't have anywhere to attach a neck or wrist strap.

Some might criticize if for not being openable with one hand. In fact it takes a practice to use two hands. I fumbled and dropped it a few times - fortunately it's landed in my lap. It closes securely and doesn't have a spring hinge that might break down.

Not really a pro or con but the camera is a standard Toshiba fixed-focus 2mp unit with all the shortcomings this implies. It takes reasonable photos in sunny conditions but nothing to get excited about. In other-than-good light the photos are, as you would expect, very noisy. It's for emergency use only. If you need a small camera buy a pocket-sized proper one - they're under $100 these days.

Battery life is a downside - it's not good. From fully-charged 20 minutes listening to music, 10 or so phone calls using the loudspeaker,(say, 30 minutes in total) is enough to completely flatten the battery.

Recommended, with the warning about battery life.

Nokia's N80 is one of the company's new breed of high-end media handsets, and is one of the first such devices to use the new 3rd edition of Nokia's S60 user interface. This is significant because S60 3rd edition is both far faster and attractive than prior versions, making the N80 a pleasure to use.

The N80 comes in a very clean and attractive slider design. When closed, the numeric keypad is hidden within its 4.8oz, 3.8" x 2" x 1" body. The 5-way directional pad controller, a pair of softkeys, a pair of editing keys, and the normal red and green call buttons are still accessible. In terms of feel and usability, the N80's d-pad controller takes some getting use to, but the rest of the buttons and keys are all fine.

When it comes to connectivity, Nokia's N80 has it in spades.
It will work on any of the 4 GSM bands found throughout the world, and even supports 3G WCDMA networks as well - where available. But there is more to it than that. For example, the N80 supports the new enhanced GPRS system called EDGE that is available here in the US and other places, and it also supports 802.11g WiFi data for connecting to a network at high speeds when at home, the office, or a local coffee house. It is even capable of SIP compliant Voice Over IP (VOIP) service, when configured to work with a compatible provider. But that's still not all, as the N80 supports Bluetooth v1.2 and infrared wireless connections as well.

As far as entertainment is concerned, the N80 is equally ready to go. For starters, it comes equipped with a 3.2 megapixel digital camera with a macro mode and red-eye reduction capable flash. The macro mode allows the N80 to take quality photos of people and landscapes as well as smaller, closer objects like flowers. The camera also is capable of recording fine quality video clips in MP4 format at 352x288 pixel resolution, or lower quality 3GP clips at 176x144 pixel resolution. Whether you are shooting video or stills, you hold the N80 horizontally like a digital camera. A dedicated shutter button sits comfortably under your right index finger when used in this way.

Nokia's N80 is also quite capable of keeping you entertained with music, too. You can load up the included 128MB miniSD memory card with music, or buy your own card of up to 2GB in capacity for many hours of music. Of course having the capacity to store a lot of MP3 files is of little use if the music player application is no good. Luckily, the N80's dedicated multimedia button launches Nokia's new music application, which mimics many of the features found in dedicated MP3 players, such as sorting songs by artist, album, genre, and track name. You can create and edit track lists on the N80 itself, or use Nokia's included software. The N80 uses the de facto standard M3U format for playlists. If you manage to run out of MP3 files to listen to, you can always instead use the built-in FM radio with the included stereo headphones.

The Nokia N80 comes equipped with a 3.2 megapixel digital camera with a macro mode and red-eye reduction capable flash.

Of course no handset is perfect, and the Nokia N80 has a few shortcomings. For one, all of those high-tech features require a lot of battery power. As such, the N80 only managed 4.75 hours of talk time, and realistically will need to be recharged every other day at least. Also lacking is the quality of the voice dialing system. But if you can deal with those limitations, the N80 will reward you with more capability in a handset than could have been imagined only a couple of years ago.
