Top 5 Value for Money Mobiles under Rs. 5000 – Dec’10

some decent value for money mobiles available in Indian market under Rs. 5,000.
Before starting I would like to let you know some essential facts of under 5K price range. This range is flooded with China clad Indian mobile manufacturers e.g. Lava, G-Five etc. No doubt these companies dominate under 5K segment but the major issue with these manufacturers is the quality. They add the features just for the hake of it and there is no perfection guaranteed. Normally I try to avoid these phones in the list compilation.
Getting a decent phone under 5K is definitely a tough job since manufacturers tend to compromise a lot due to budget constraint. But boy, don’t you worry. Hum hain na. Lets see what are the best available options in the market under 5K.
And yes, since 3G has entered India, I have tried to incorporate more 3G mobiles in the list.

Top 5 Mobiles under Rs. 5000 for December 10

Looks a bit like Samsung Omnia Pro. Features like is a Dual Sim, 3 Mega Pixel camera, 32 GB expandable memory (generally found in high-end phones), battery backup of 10 days standby and 3 hours talk time etc. makes it a great buy. No 3g though

5. Samsung mPower TV S239 – Price in India : Rs. 4899

Last phone of the list is dedicated to our CDMA readers who are looking for an option to go 3G for a budget. Samsung S239 is a 3G CDMA handset which comes embedded with the MobiTV to get bufferless access to 50 Live Channels. Since It is developed on the OMH platform, can be used with any CDMA operator. 3G connectivity (up to 2.4 Mbps) is also well optimized for Tata Photon/Reliance Netconnect.

Karbonn Brings in a Battery of Phones

Amongst the low-budget multimedia phone companies, Karbonn has not hit the Indian market too well. Looking at the K10 and K560, you might just agree. They're now trying to counter that with quantity, as they plan on launching ten new phones with varied features and prices.

The specs of all the phones are not officially out, but in brief the Karbonn K111, K11 and K514 fall in the multimedia category while the Karbonn K550i, K424, K343, K316, are music phones. The Karbonn K451i doesn’t boast of any features apart from good battery life. We’ve found some specs from various sites on the K1414 and K25i.

K1414 looks pretty

K1414 is a touchscreen phone with access to Twitter and EBuddy services. The phone supports Dual SIM (GSM + GSM) and has the standard features of Alarm, PC Modem Adaptability and Stopwatch. Here’s a list of the specs for the K1414:

Although there’s no mention of the price, Flipkart has slapped a Rs. 4990 tag on it.

State of the Mobile Web, November 2010

This month, the report reflects on a year of growth for Opera, but more importantly, growth for the mobile Internet. Passing milestone after milestone over the year, our users took the full Web experience to their hearts and browsed an incredible 340 billion pages in the first 11 months of 2010 (compared to 129 billion pages in the first 11 months of 2009).
With more than 80 million users in November, the yearly trends reflect a user base spanning teenagers with smartphones in Western Europe to users of basic feature phones in developing countries. We look beyond borders, and beyond issues of economic development, to present the most rounded picture of the mobile Web available today.
Who are the risers of the mobile Web throughout 2010? Who has seen their star dim? Our statistics show that while some popular websites such as Facebook are staples of the mobile Web, there are significant movements bubbling just below the top sites. Twitter and Zedge are just two of the sites that rose significantly on a global basis, while waptrick and Friendster became less popular as the year progressed.
We believe people with access to information lead more social, more informed and more empowered lives. Growth in mobile browsing means the Web is pushing beyond its traditional borders. If the first era of the Web was about expanding the capability and content of the Web, the second age is clearly about access. Every page view and every new user represents an opportunity to expand the reach of the Web. We believe that is something to celebrate — not only during the holidays, but every day — for we truly live in a remarkable age.
In our regional spotlight, the focus is on Latin America, where we saw tremendous growth over the last year. In Brazil and Ecuador, for example, the number of people using Opera Mini increased significantly, setting the pace in a region where mobile web use is evolving rapidly.

Highlights

As shown in Part 1 of the report, Opera Mini saw significant increases in all three categories of growth in November 2010: unique users, pages viewed and data consumed. In all, 80.0 million people used Opera Mini in November, 44.6 billion pages were served, and 6.3 petabytes of operator data were compressed for Opera Mini users.
As seen in Part 2 of the report, Nigeria passed the United States in terms of total Opera Mini users in the month of November. The United Kingdom, Belarus, Philippines, Poland, Bangladesh and Germany all went up in the ranking of top 20 countries. Turkey was a new addition in November, as Malaysia fell off the list.
In Part 3 of this month’s report, we look at countries in Latin America. The top 11 countries using Opera Mini in that region are Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Honduras.
Some numbers: From November 2009 to November 2010, page views in the top 11 countries of Latin America increased by 543%, unique users increased by 298% and data transferred increased by 447%.
Growth rates in Latin America: Brazil and Ecuador lead the top 11 countries of the region in terms of page-view growth (1535.9 % and 860.4 %, respectively). Brazil and Colombia lead the top 11 countries of the region in growth of unique users (575.6 % and 333.7 %, respectively). Brazil and Dominican Republic lead the top 11 countries of the region in growth of data transferred (1181.5 % and 599.7 %, respectively). Costa Rica leads the top 11 countries of the region in page views per user, with each user browsing 694 pages on average each month.
In the top Latin American countries — except for Brazil — Google, Facebook, Live, and YouTube variously occupy positions 1 through 4 in the site rankings for each country. In Brazil, Orkut replaces Facebook, but Facebook is still in Brazil’s top 10 list of sites.
We looked at the top 10 handsets used in each of the top 11 Latin American countries. Out of the 110 total handsets listed, 66 of them were Nokia, 29 of them were Sony Ericsson, 2 of them were LG, 1 of them was Samsung, 5 of them were BlackBerry and 7 were Apple.
In Part 4 of this month’s report, we look at the top sites and handsets worldwide at the end of 2010 (through November) compared to the top handsets and sites observed at the end of 2009. We also compare Opera Mini growth rates (for the period between November 2009 and November 2010) in different regions around the world.
Twitter and Zedge are two sites that rose significantly on a global basis, whereas waptrick and Friendster became less popular as the year progressed.
Thirteen handsets made the top 30 list in November 2010 that were not present on the list in November 2009. Nine of them were Nokia handsets, one was a Sony Ericsson handset, one was an Apple handset and one was an LG handset.
Between November 2009 and November 2010, Latin America showed the fastest growth in terms of Opera Mini users (up 308%), pages viewed (up 545%), and data transferred (up 487%), followed by South Asia. Africa and the Middle East were also at the upper end of the spectrum in terms of unique user growth, pages viewed, and data transferred.
East Asia grew surprisingly quickly (up 335%) in terms of data transferred via Opera Mini even though that region’s unique user and page-view growth rates were significantly lower in comparison.

Part 1: Growth

Number of users

In November 2010, Opera Mini had over 80.0 million users, a 4.9% increase from October 2010. Since November 2009, the number of unique users has increased 91.8%.

Pages transcoded

Opera Mini users viewed over 44.6 billion pages in November 2010. Since October, page views have gone up 7.3%. Since November 2009, page views have increased 137.3%.

Data consumed

In November 2010, Opera Mini users generated over 677 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Since October, the data consumed went up by 10.0%. Data in Opera Mini is compressed up to 90%. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed over 6.3 petabytes of data in October. Since November 2009, data traffic is up 137.

Part 4: Trends in 2010

In this month’s special focus, we look at the top sites and handsets worldwide at the end of 2010 (through November) compared to the top handsets and sites observed at the end of 2009. We also compare Opera Mini growth rates (for the period between November 2009 and November in different regions around the world.

Highlights

Twitter and Zedge are two sites that rose significantly on a global basis, whereas waptrick and Friendster became less popular as the year progressed.
Thirteen handsets made the top 30 list in November 2010 that were not present on the list in November 2009. Nine of them were Nokia handsets, one was a Sony Ericsson handset, one was an Apple handset and one was an LG handset.
Between November 2009 and November 2010, Latin America showed the fastest growth in terms of Opera Mini users (up 308%), pages viewed (up 545%), and data transferred (up 487%), followed by South Asia. Africa and the Middle East were also at the upper end of the spectrum in terms of unique user growth, pages viewed, and data transferred.
East Asia grew surprisingly quickly (up 335%) in terms of data transferred via Opera Mini even though that region’s unique user and page view growth rates were significantly lower in comparison.

Methodology

For this part of the report, we looked at the combined user, page-view, and data-transferred statistics for the top countries in each of the listed regions, and calculated the growth in each of those categories within the time frame November 2009 through November 2010.
Here is a breakdown of the countries we looked at within each region:

Reliance Infotel’s LTE ready tablet for Rs 8,000

Mukesh Ambani’s company Reliance Infotel, which is the only company with pan India spectrum to launch BWA services, has plans of selling tablets at less than Rs 8,000.

Just to have an idea how cheap Infotel’s proposed tablet will be, consider that it will be about one fourth the price of a high end device such as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, which costs Rs 35,000; or a third of the price of a medium range device like the Olivepad from Olive Communications, which sells at Rs 27,000. Of course, prices in general might go down by the time Infotel’s tablet is available.
Our sources tell us that the company is currently testing tablets from almost 15 Taiwanese vendors. It has already decided that it will use LTE technology for its network.
Infotel is likely to announce its plans in the first quarter of 2011 and will start network roll-out soon after.
While the specs of the tablet are not known, our sources are certain that it will use LTE, or Long Term Evolution high speed broadband technology.
Apart from that some of Infotel’s tablets are expected to run on Android OS and the cheapest ones might use custom Java based operating systems.
It is said that tablets will be key to the mass market adoption of broadband and Infotel is expected to ensure that access devices are cheap, the same as Reliance Communications did when it entered the market with CDMA almost a decade ago.
India has been a laggard as far as broadband adoption goes, and analysts have pointed fingers at two main aspects, device cost and lack of content.
Infotel hopes that it is solving at least one of these problems. The company said in a presentation to its investors that it will also concentrate on creating an eco system to ensure quality content, and we expect them to already be working on it.

Google Beats Facebook On Mobile Web, Says Opera

Opera Software's latest State of the Mobile Web report highlights the browsing behavior of its 80 million users. In the U.S., the big winners are Google and Apple.

Opera releases data generated by its users each month. In November 2010, Opera notes that its Mini browser saw significant increases in unique users, pages viewed and data consumed. Some 80 million people used the Opera Mini browser in the month of November, viewing 44.6 billion pages. According to Opera, its server-side compression crunched down 6.3 petabytes of data.

Year-over-year, Opera Mini's page-view growth climbed 103.1%. The number of unique users swelled by 28.4%, with the average user viewing 422 web pages per month. The average user consumed 10MB of data, and the average web page was just 2Kb.
Facebook was the king of the mobile internet hill in 2009, according to Opera, maker of the Opera Mini and Mobile browsers for handsets. This year, Google regained the top spot worldwide.
Globally, the top 10 web sites as ranked by Opera are 1. Google; 2. Facebook; 3. Vkontakte.ru; 4. Youtube; 5. Odnoklassniki.ru; 6. Yandex.ru; 7. Yahoo; 8. My.opera; 9. Mail.ru; 10. Getjar.

In the U.S., the top 10 web sites look more familiar; 1. Google; 2. Facebook; 3. Youtube; 4. Wikipedia; 5. Yahoo; 6. My.opera; 7. Accuweather; 8. ESPN.go; 9. NYtimes; and 10. Myspace.
Turning to the handsets making use of Opera Mini, it's no surprise to see that worldwide, the numbers favor Nokia. They are: 1. Nokia 5130 XpressMusic; 2. Nokia 2700c; 3. Nokia 6300; 4. Nokia 2690; 5. Apple iPhone; 6. Nokia 2330c; 7. Nokia 2730c; 8. Nokia N70; 9. Nokia C3; and 10. Nokia 5310 XpressMusic. Nine out of the top 10 handsets using Opera Mini were made by Nokia.
In the U.S, it is an entirely different picture. Handsets using Opera Mini in the U.S. are: 1. Apple iPhone; 2. LG VM265 Rumor2; 3. BlackBerry 8520 Curve; 4. BlackBerry 9700 Bold; 5. LG VM510 Rumor Touch; 6. BlackBerry 8330 Curve; 7. Samsung SPH-M810 Instinct S30; 8. BlackBerry 9630 Tour; 9. BlackBerry 8530 Curve; and 10. BlackBerry 9000 Bold.
What's surprising is that not a single Android handset lands in the top 10 when it comes to Opera Mini users in the U.S. Is that because Opera Mobile (Opera's full-featured browser) is also available to the Android platform? Or is it because the stock Android browser is good enough for most people? Opera doesn't speculate.
“We believe people with access to information lead more social, more informed and more empowered lives,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software. “Growth in mobile browsing means the Web is pushing beyond its traditional borders. If the first era of the Web was about expanding the capability and content of the Web, the second age is clearly about access. In Opera we believe that access to the Web is a universal right."

Nokia C5-03 set to replace Nokia 5800XM

Nokia had announced C5-03 in October and this phone is now set for release in India at 10k price point. For long, 5800XM has been one of the best low-midrange Symbian handset. After Nokia 5235 (8k retail price), the next best Symbian touch device is X6 which retails for 15k, and it doesn’t really justify the 14k+ price tag. C5-03 should fill that gap, which was taken care by old horse 5800XM. C5-03 doesn’t boast of any new features. Consider it as 5800XM v2.

After a worth waiting, India’s own and one of the leading handset maker Micromax all set to launch Android OS running smartphone dubbed as Micromax Andro A60 in India. The comapny has showed off its debut Android smartphone at Delhi Micromax Bloggers’ Meet.

Named as Andro A60, Micromax’s latest offering is featured with Android 2.1, 600MHz CPU, 3.2Megapixel camera, 2.8″ resistive touch screen. The smartphone supports both 2G (WAP/GPRS/EDGE) and 3G (HSPA support). Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS come as a fine touch.

While Android 2.1 and reistive touch screen are really disappointing (typing with SWYPE will be a pain), but it is worth of buy when you see at its price tag. Andro is expected to be priced around Rs. 8000, and competes with Samsung Galaxy 5 and Spice MI300.

Micromax Andro A60 is nothing but re-branded ” ZTE Penguin” which was showcased in July, 2010. You can remember recently Dell launched ZTE Racer & Blade Android phones as re-branded Dell XCD35 & XCD28.

iCube is a new mobile company in India like Micromax. We have seen several dual sim mobile phone these day and iCube has take this innovation to a next step with the three SIM mobile phones. I personally don’t know too many phones that can support three SIM cards, so iCube i700 should do good in its market segment. iCube i700 is a bar phone with basic features. You can use 2 GSM and 1 CDMA SIM cards at a time but is it capable to take calls at the same time on these SIM cards? We are not sure for this feature, so if you have one of these, please comment and let us know.

The Pirate Bay Founders Sentenced To Jail And $6.5 Million Fine

The founders of the popular torrent site The Pirate Bay – Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde, and Carl Lundström have had their previous convictions upheld by a Swedish court of appeals.The three defendants did see their prison sentences reduced but the court increased the fine levied on the trio from 30 million kronor to 46 million kronor (USD $6.5 million). In April of 2009, a 1 year jail sentence was handed down to the three defendants; the new sentencing has the Swedish residents spending between 4 and 10 months behind bars: Neij, 10 months in prison; Sunde, 8 months in prison; Lundström, 4 months in prison.

The chairman for the Swedish arm of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, Ludvig Werner said “In two years, this type of piracy will be over. After a ruling like this and all the pioneers start to get older and have children and families, piracy won’t occur to this extent.” Christian Engström, a Pirate Party member of the European Parliament, refutes that claim, “The judgement has no meaning for file sharing. It has continued to increase from year to year and the technical capabilities continue to develop.”

Playstation Phone Details Leak

More details about the Playstation Phone from Sony Ericsson have leaked. The details were leaked to Mobile Crunch who heard that the Playstation Phone was very real. A few other details mentioned about the device include the screen being on par with the iPhone 4 retina display perhaps with some BRAVIA technology being pushed in there by Sony. We also hear that the device is nowhere near ready and that it might be ready for February to be launched at Mobile World Congress.
Other information reveals that the price tag will be somewhere around the $500 mark (unsubsidized). This price tag will see the device have around 5 games that come with the unit. Other games are expected to be sub $10 perhaps pushed through the Android Market.
Z-System has been confirmed as being real and perhaps could be the way games are distributed although that depends on games being pushed through the Android Market. It isn't full clear what this part of the system will do.
Apparently the Mobile Crunch tipster was impressed and said that it's the best gaming on a mobile device he has seen.
Certainly interesting stuff!
