As reported by Flurry, advertising dollars are indeed flowing into mobile, with 63% of leading brand marketers increasing their mobile advertising spending over the last 24 months, but this is only the tip of the iceberg—where are the rest?

According to Flurry Analytics, “the main reason for this disparity is that the mobile-App platform has emerged so rapidly over such a short period of time.  With the iOS and Android App economy only three-and-half years old, Madison Avenue and other brands have yet to adjust to an unprecedented adoption of Apps by consumers.”

The cross-sectional view Flurry offers through its charts is as following: although the time spent on mobile devices accounts for 23% of the time consumers spend in front of media consumption devices, the biggest budgets are allocated to TV and print.

And this is just the present picture. The mobile industry is poised to grow, reaching one billion Smartphones and tablets by 2015.

Another quick glance into the world of mobile advertising offered by Flurry puts the audience under the microscope. The research company took a sample of 60,000 daily active users of iOS, from among a total group of 6 million, and calculated the “effective cost-per-mille” or eCPM. The higher the eCPM by audience attribute, the more valuable the audience is, both to advertisers and publishers, Peter Farago explains.

What the research company found is that women aged 25–34 fetch the highest eCPM; in other words, they are bridging the mobile ad spending gap, followed by men aged 18–25. As Farago points out, the highest eCPMs are coming from people whose incomes range from $60,000 to $100,000.

In conclusion, a mobile user profile who interacts with ads on Smartphones and/or tablet looks like this: they are aged 18–34, have at least a bachelor’s degree, and have a housing income ranging between $60,000 and $100,000.

The latest numbers come from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, who surveyed Smartphone users in the first four weeks of 2012. The result: Android has recorded huge growth with a 36.9% share of Smartphones in use in the UK. Its biggest rival, Apple, has the next biggest share, with 28.5% of all handsets, while RIM has just over 15%.

The numbers are significant in the light of Kantar’s latest data, published just two days ago, saying that feature phones are now in the minority in the UK. The figures released by the research company also show that Smartphones made up a remarkable 71.4% of mobile phone sales during the holiday season.

Both surveys (one covering the holiday season, and the other, the first four weeks of January 2012) show that while Android has become the most popular mobile OS, Apple is now growing at a faster rate.

This could be due to the most sought after iPhone 4S, but the previous generation iPhones are also very popular among Smartphone buyers.

However, Apple’s popularity is stronger in the US than on the old continent. According to Kantar’s data, Apple’s share was at 44.9%, while Android took 44.8% of the US market in the holiday season and the first four weeks of January 2012. Apple also increased its share of the British Smartphone market from 22% a year ago to 34%.

Another interesting highlight of the report is the growing popularity of the Windows Phone. Although the Nokia Lumia 800 has gained its first one percent of market share, it has a long road ahead, as it failed to finish the quarter among the top ten Smartphones sold in Great Britain.

Blackberry, on the other hand, remained “the brand of choice in the Smartphone gifting market”, with 57% of Blackberrys purchased as gifts in the fourth quarter of 2011, rising to 76% during the holiday season. Kantar also found that 55% of new Blackberry owners are under 16, indicating RIM’s hold on the UK youth market.

While these numbers look great for both RIM and WP, the battle for the lion’s share is between Android and iOS. While Apple’s iPhone continues its steady growth, the Android OS is still the most popular among Smartphone users.

While the information they got does not cover every aspect of the device scheduled to be launched next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it offers a quick glimpse of what we can expect to see in a couple of days.

The 7-inch tablet will be equipped with mini-HDMI, Micro-USB, and Mini-USB, will feature a 2 MP back camera and possibly a VGA front camera, and 1 GB of RAM.

Furthermore, there will also be a micro SD card slot, and the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-running tablet will offer 3G connectivity. The display is said to be a high-resolution 1024 x 600 pixels panel with a pixel density of 169 ppi.

Pocket-Lint does not have information about the processor, but we can expect at a dual-core CPU from the Google-certified device.

Although it still appears as “out of stock”, an online listing will sell the device for $350, so the price seems acceptable.

While Apple faced a huge blow in China in its battle over the iPad trademark with the Taiwanese Proview—which now seems to be going in the right direction for them—it has been successful with its iPhone.

Apple’s focus on China got a result: starting March 9, the iPhone 4S will be available at China Telecom, the country’s No. 3 mobile carrier and No. 1 Wi-Fi and fixed-line provider, having 216 million subscribers.

This is a huge step for Apple. CNN helps to put this into perspective: AT&T sold 7.4 million, Verizon sold 4.2 million, and Sprint 1.8 million.

Now, the potential of new iPhone 4S owners has grown by another 15 million over night—China Telecom holds 38.7 million 3G subscribers. The aforementioned 15 million subscribers are just the potential new owners, who, based on a Morgan Stanley report, can easily afford Apple’s iDevice.

However, there is another giant Apple has to reach an agreement with: China’s no. 1 carrier, China Mobile—by the way it is also the world’s largest carrier, with more than 600 million subscribers—has not yet signed a partnership with Apple, although the discussions started years ago.

Meanwhile, CNN reports that according to Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty, 20% of China Unicom’s 43 million 3G subscribers have already bought an iPhone, and she expects a 60% growth over the upcoming months.

With this information flowing in, Oppenheimer’s iPhone sale forecast adjustment gets a new light and is likely to be close to what we read in Apple’s fiscal Q2 report.

Apple.pro, a reliable source of Apple rumors, has recently leaked a spy shot of the iPad 3’s front, and it sure looks like the previous generation tablet. As MacRumors already measured the size of the screen, and it is the same 9.7-inch as the iPad, it wasn’t hard to guess that the iPad 3 front would have the exact same size as its predecessor.

The difference will be obvious when you power on the device, however, as it will ship with the eagerly awaited Retina Display and will feature improved cameras. There are different rumors claiming that the iPad 3 will sport an 8 MP camera, but this isn’t likely to happen.

Meanwhile, another source, M.I.C.Gadget, has posted some new shots of the back of the iPad 3, claiming that it is 1 mm thicker. Well, looking at the photos I’d say it was just an illusion—it won’t be thicker, and the rumors that the tablet will have a bigger battery. It is photographic art; I love those shots, but they are just creating an optical illusion.

Xie Xiaghui, the bankrupt company’s attorney said, according to AFP: “We are now preparing for negotiations, but the court cases will continue until we reach an agreement.” He said Apple has reassured Proview that it has peaceful intentions, so the talks will soon take place.

Proview’s decision comes hard on the heels of yesterday’s blow when the Intermediate People’s Court in Huizhou ruled that distributors should stop selling iPads.

“Apple has so much cash that they will look at the situation, look at how their profits are going to be impacted, and if it looks like it is going to be significant, they will just pay and take care of it,” said Ben Cavender, a senior analyst at China Market Research Group, suggesting that Apple will reach an out-of-court settlement with Proview.

Meanwhile, a Shanghai court is tomorrow scheduled to hear the case by the Taiwanese company against Apple.

Furthermore, Proview has filed lawsuits against Apple’s local resellers in several cities. The outcome of these lawsuits depends on the Shanghai court’s decision as well as the Apple-Proview trademark settlement.

The company sees a strong demand for the iPhone during this quarter, so it forecasts 31 million unit sales, up from its originally estimated 29 million. The other Apple best-selling product, the iPad, was also revised, with 1 million units. So, Oppenheimer expects to see 11 million iPads sold during this quarter, up from the previously announced10 million.

Kidron said the iPad sales were slowed down by the imminent launch of the iPad 3.

However, choosing a Smartphone depends on many factors, but according to a blog post by Nielsen, the decision is closely related to age and earnings.

Nielsen’s claim is based on recent research the company conducted when they surveyed 20,000 Americans with mobile phones in January.

Their findings show that 66% of those aged between 24–35 own or have previously owned a Smartphone. In the same age group, 80% of those who decided to purchase a new device, opted for a Smartphone. “Among those who chose a device in the last three months, more than half of those under 65 had chosen a Smartphone,” Nielsen reports. Still, the Smartphone penetration stood at only 48% in the first month of this year.

When taking into account both age and income, the latter wins for older Americans, aged between 55–64 who make over 100,000 a year, while those in the 35–44 age bracket make 35,000–75,000 a year.
