Mobile shopping worth $119 billion in 2015.Are you agree?

In 2015, shoppers around the world are expected to spend about $119 billion on goods and services purchased via mobile phones. That number represents about 8% of the total e-commerce market.

“Mobile online shopping is reaching critical mass,” says senior analyst Mark Beccue. “In the United States, mobile online shopping rose from $396 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion in 2009. While definitions of ‘mass market adoption’ vary, a more than threefold increase in one year indicates significant consumer interest."

Noteworthy is that even that $1+ billion turnover in the US is dwarfed by the size of the mobile online shopping market in Japan, which exceeded $10 billion in 2009 alone.

This market is growing solidly in Europe too, and is expected to outpace the US by the end of 2010.

“The driver for mobile online shopping in the US has been the recent sharp spike in Smartphone adoption and the corresponding enthusiasm for mobile Internet. Also, many more retailers have been launching mobile commerce websites,” adds Beccue. A longer-term driver in global terms is the fact that in many less-industrialized regions, mobile are virtually the only way to access the Internet.

Not only does mobile online shopping allow shoppers to manage their time better, but in the fourth quarter of 2009, an interesting trend emerged: consumers were checking out products in bricks-and-mortar retail stores and using their phones for comparison shopping.

A subset of mobile commerce is the trade in virtual goods, generally associated with online gaming. This too has seen rapid uptake, as mobile payments are the best option for online purchases under about $20, and this way of shopping is especially suitable for those – often young gamers – without credit cards

Mobixell Networks, a provider of mobile multimedia and advertising services, announced on Thursday that it has acquired mobile Internet firm 724 Solutions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Mobile Internet Firm 724 Solutions Founded in 2000, San Jose, Calif.-based Mobixell provides multimedia processing and multi-channel mobile advertising to over 300 mobile operators and content producers.
Mobixell said that the merged company "will create a global organisation with local sales and support capability in the US, UK, China, Switzerland, India, Israel, and other countries, and with a customer base of over 350 mobile operators worldwide."

A Mobile site map (or sitemap) is a representation of the architecture of a mobile site. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool or it a listing of all sections of a mobile site, often represented in a graphical, sometimes hierarchical way. Usually, each listing in a site map is a hyperlink.

Please take these points into consideration when you start creating mobile site map:

If you plan to use a Sitemap creation tool, you should check to see that it can create Mobile Sitemaps.
A Mobile Sitemap can contain only URLs that serve mobile web content. Any URLs that serve only non-mobile web content will be ignored by the Google crawling mechanisms. If you have non-mobile content, create a separate Sitemap for those URLs.
If the tag is missing, your mobile URLs won't be properly crawled.

The problems face the mobile web

We thought that the mobile web is the next breakthrough during the next years.But I think the contrary for this. Mobile web has a lot of obstacles to be spread as the internet of mobile technology .i will mention in the following lines why mobile web willnot spread as you think.
1. Wireless carrier networks are SLOW
I’m using a Blackberry 8830 on Verizon’s EV-DO broadband network. It’s faster than any other mobile network I’ve ever used. It’s helluva lot faster than an iPhone on AT&T’s Edge network. But it’s still slow. I find myself getting impatient waiting for sites to load, like it was 1997 all over again.
Last weekend, I was trying to figure out how late Costco is open on Sunday. It would have been faster, literally, to call my wife at home and ask her to look it up on a real broadband connection. That’ a sad state.
2. Public WiFi access is a SCAM
I traveled to New York last week and encountered no less than THREE WiFi networks, all wanting me to pay $7-10 to access for the day, or commit to $30/month — but how can I commit to a monthly fee if every hotspot is on a different network? National Airport in DC had Sprint. Starbucks had T-Mobile. And then LaGuardia’s Delta Shuttle Terminal had Boingo Wireless (I never heard of them either) — I tried to “roam” with the T-Mobile account I set up at Starbucks, but no luck.
I was in New York again this week at the OMMA conference — I tried to connect apparently outside the conference WiFi and stumbled onto Hilton’s WiFi — $5 for ONE HOUR! WiFi on Amtrak? Yeah, right. I’m writing this from Starbucks in DC following a lunch meeting, where I took it on the chin again from T-Mobile because my Blackberry somehow got unconfigured and I can’t get it to connect as a modem.
Everyone is running around all excited about iPhone and iPod touch WiFi capabilities, and here comes a Blackberry with WiFi. All I can say is better get your credit card out, because you’re going to pay, and pay, and pay again.
Municipalities are getting bogged down in their efforts to provide free WiFi access. You have to wonder whether this is just another government/industry joint venture debacle, or if there are vested interests who don’t want to see it happen.
3. Sites aren’t formated for small screens
You would think that in 2007 most sites would be technologically capable of sensing when they are being loaded by a mobile browser and deliver a site optimized for that use. Alas, no. When I loaded Costco.com, I had to scroll through an endless list of links to product categories to get to the page content.
But wait, you will say, what about the revolutionary iPhone, which loads the actual website and lets you zoom in and out with a touch of a finger? What about that, huh?
Yeah, well, remember when everyone had a 800×600 screen resolution, and we used to design websites to fit that width? Why was that? Oh, right, because scrolling is annoying. Looking at a normal web page on iPhone’s 3 inch screen is like surfing the web through a keyhole.
So, great, you can jam the entire NYtimes.com onto the screen — got a magnifying glass? Immediately having to zoom means it wasn’t optimized to begin with.

When I load a site on a tiny screen I want to see the information I’m most likely to be searching for, nicely and intuitively formated.
When I visit Costco on a mobile device, what are the chance I’m going to shop? Almost nil. I want store locations, phone numbers, and hours of operation, and I don’t want to stumble through four slow-loading screens to get that info.
4. Mobile device screens are too small
There is a natural tension between the need for a larger screen to engage with the web and the need for a smaller device to slip into your pocket. The iPhone and Blackberry probably come about as close as you’re going to get to striking the right balance, depending on whether you want a physical keyboard.
But even the glorified iPhone’s screen is still tiny. There are many things I simply won’t bother to do on a small screen, and will instead wait until I have access to a large screen — like shop, bank, blog, etc.
Much of what I’ve read about the future of mobile assumes we will do everything on a mobile device that we do on our desktops or laptops, but even if my complaints #1-3 are fully addressed, technology can’t fix the limitations of human eyesight and hand size — at least not for a while.
I think the mobile web will continue for some time to be about getting done what can’t wait until later — like email or looking up store hours or checking headlines or seeking idle entertainment to pass the time.
5. Advertising gets in the way
When pages load with blazing broadband speed, I don’t care if ads load along with them. With a nice wide screen, I don’t even care if ads take up a large portion of the screen real estate.
But on a small screen, all bets are off. Ads that slow down page loading or fill up the screen are going to be most unwelcome, unless they are extremely relevant and useful, i.e. a coupon for what I want to buy in the type of store I’m searching for.
There aren’t many ads yet on the mobile web — other than banners made for the full-screen web that annoyingly load. So this is more about anticipating the suckiness to come.
I have no doubt that the mobile web will eventually mature — just like Web 2.0 will eventually grow up. But for now, it’s still a fussy child.

T-Mobile announced in August 2008 that they would produce the first smartphone to use Google's Android software and compete head-on with the Apple iPhone. The phone is part of an open standards effort of the Open Handset Alliance.
Android is a software platform and operating system for mobile devices, based on the Linux kernel, developed by Google and later the Open Handset Alliance.It allows developers to write managed code in a Java-like language that utilizes Google-developed Java libraries,but does not support programs developed in native code.
T-Mobile is the first mobile player to bring Android to the masses, but will it be enough to tempt business users?
We will take the Apple iPhone's first generation, for example. It didn’t have support for 3G or Exchange so, while it had consumers falling head over heels in love, businesses – and particularly their IT departments – weren’t so charmed. The second-generation device, however, offers a much more compelling proposition for business users.
After our brief hands-on with T-Mobile’s G1 handset – the first Android-based device to hit the UK – we’re inclined to think that it will, at least initially, have the same level of business appeal as the iPhone mark one. With a lack of support for Exchange and Bluetooth only present in the form of handset and headset support as opposed to that plus file transfer, the first iteration of Android has some serious business critical omissions.
Push email (Gmail and most other POP3 and IMAP mail services) is supported by the G1, however, so business users looking to gain access to their non-work emails on the go will benefit. It’s always on behind the scenes and messages - both email and text - appear in the top-left of the screen as and when they’re received. It’s simply a case of using a finger to drag the complete message into view. Threaded SMS is also a nice tool for business users, who are increasingly turning to this non-verbal communication to relay good news of information to colleagues.
Android’s UI is slick and easy to use, with the G1’s customisable home screen mirroring the sorts of icons and usual Google suspects (Google Mail, Google Talk et al) you’d find on a standard desktop.Those looking to edit Office-based documents are in for a disappointment, however, as the G1 comes with a reader but no editing functionality. It’s likely developers will respond to this omission by creating such an application for the Android Market.

T-Mobile and Google claim their shared vision for making the mobile web experience even better was what brought them together. But have they succeeded? In short, yes, the G1 boasts HSDPA connectivity (up to 7.2Mbps), plus Wi-Fi support so users can surf the web quickly and easily. A scaled down version of a web browser not at all dissimilar to Google’s Chrome is also present, allowing users to open, manage, navigate and zoom in and out on web pages at the mere touch of a finger. GPS and a Digital Compass are both present, the latter of which could come in handy for those who have a habit of getting lost en route to business meetings. Another widget that could prove useful for business people – particularly if it’s their job to buy things for the company – is one focused on price comparison. It’s a case of taking a picture of a barcode and the application does the rest, searching for other locations where you can buy the same item at a lower cost.

So that’s the platform. What about the hardware? T-Mobile’s G1 is an HTC handset that looks a little Sidekick-esque to us, which is no bad thing. The QWERTY keyboard is nicely spaced out and comes to life smoothly thanks to the way it’s attached to body of the handset. It looks rugged without looking to chunky ensuring it’s both practical and not too aesthetically challenged. The 3.2in 320x480 screen is generous but, alas, looks quite prone to greasy finger marks thanks to its incredibly responsive touch screen interface. We normally assume touch screens won’t be responsive, but the G1’s exceeded our expectations, which was a pleasant surprise. Unlike the iPhone and other iPhone-esque touch screen smartphones out there, there isn’t an opportunity to enter data using a virtual keyboard. Instead, you’re forced to use the hard keyboard. Thankfully, that’s no great hardship as the spacing considerations design-wise make doing so a nice user experience.
Keeping the keyboard company, but on the front of the device rather than hidden are five buttons and a small mouse/track wheel. This minimalist approach is becoming an increasingly common trend among phone manufacturers.
The G1 doesn’t support video, which is a shame in our opinion, but the in-built music player is nice to look use, and sound quality from the integrated speakers was pretty good.
Unfortunately, our brief one-to-one with the device was over before we could put the G1’s 3.2 megapixel camera through its paces so we’re unable to comment on whether the snapper is any good.

What Google has achieved with Android is very innovative and offers a viable alternative to those not keen on the iPhone. That said, we doubt very much that business users will be rushing out to buy the G1 as their primary corporate tool once it launches over here in November.
Despite it being free on contracts over £40 a month, and T-Mobile recently having tweaked its fair usage policy to allow a ‘soft’ limit of 3GB of data a month rather than 1GB, there’s just not enough meat on its bones - as it stands now - to get the corporate crowd salivating.

Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch says it’s not an iPhone, but it’s close. It doesn’t have quite the finish of the iPhone (both in terms of hardware or user interface), but it comes pretty damn close. And more importantly, it matches the iPhone on many fronts. It’s got GPS, WiFi, a touchscreen, an accelerometer, a camera, Gmail, Google Maps, a Webkit-based browser (just like Safari on the iPhone), and an App market.

A mobile phone is very different browsing device from a PC.
the most important differences specific to the mobile device and mobile browsing include
the display, keys, memory space, processing power, and battery life.
Display:
The most obvious difference between PC browsing and mobile browsing is the screen size.
The users seemed to appreciate the PDA/Communicator screen size, but
thought that browsing on any smaller screen would be unusable. When we spoke to
smart phone users, the comments were very similar: surprisingly, phone users had few
complaints about the small screen size but they thought that browsing on any smaller screen
would be unusable. Rather than complaining about the screen size, many users complained
about some web pages that did not take small screen browsing into account.
Even on PDA and Communicator, users suffered from a keyhole view problem: they did not
know how large the page is, and where the target content is located. On PDA, this was
mainly because the pages were intact, shown exactly in the same format as on the PC. On
relatively low resolution screens of the PDAs, 1:1 text size was even too big for close
viewing.The display resolution and contrast improve text readability a lot. We have recently run a few user studies with the latest Nokia phone prototypes, introducing a display of 352x416
pixels, physical size being no more than 35 x 41.5 mm. The browser users are amazed about
the display quality and their ability to read even tiny texts on it. In these cases, the display
quality, not only its size, was a clear factor affecting mobile browsing usability.
In addition to a high quality display, the browser software can provide a visualization
method that alleviates the small screen problems
Keys
In addition to the display, the limited keypad on mobile phones is an obvious difference
between mobile browsing and desktop browsing. It was interesting to notice in Japan that a
17-year old male who did not use a PC at all, saw the phone keypad so simple and handy for
him that he would prefer to use it over the “complicated” PC keyboard. This might be a
Japanese peculiarity, but maybe there will be more opinions like this in the emerging
markets where the phone is many times the only device used for accessing the Internet.
For users of limited keypad devices, we have seen that entering a URL is the most painful
text entry task, and the browser should provide all possible aids to help typing in the URL.
When the browser provided auto-complete for URLs, our interviewees entered the
beginning of the URL and picked the familiar address from a proposed list. Here again, we
were surprised that the URL entry pattern was copied from the PC browser. This usage
pattern seems to function better than bookmarking pages and finding the bookmark, even
when the keypad is limited.
Also search engines are used a lot even on limited keypads. Search is used a lot
on a PC, and the lack of a proper keypad does not preclude users’ search habits on a mobile
phone.
No pointing device
Web pages are designed for mouse interaction, and an increasing number of pages include
image maps or show more content when the mouse pointer is on top of an item by
recognizing a ‘mouse over’ event. Mobile phones typically do not provide a pointing device,
but the focus moves from link to link or from form item to item when the user scrolls the
page with a joystick or scrolling keys.
The users in our contextual interviews who used a Nokia Communicator that provides an
arrow pointer controlled by a rocker key did not always like this control, since it was harder
to move the pointer than focus on top of a link. This may be a matter of the input control,
because a joystick-type mouse control is widely used on laptops (e.g. IBM TrackPoint).
Browser access
The time and number of clicks required to get to the first relevant web page on a mobile
browser has an effect on mobile browsing user experience, because a mobile browser is
many times used for finding a specific piece of information quickly. Outside Finland, many
operators bundle the phone and the operator subscription, and have specific adjustments
done to the phone user interface. Typically, these operators want to provide a dead easy
access to their WAP portal, even by providing a dedicated key for that.
The participants recruited to our studies use the mobile browser relatively often, and most of
them seemed to have a quick enough access to the browser. Either the device provided a
hard key for the browser, or a softkey function available in the basic, idle state of the phone.
The rest accessed the list of applications to start up the browser.
If the shortcut is available in one of the softkeys in the idle state of the mobile phone, it is
very likely that a majority of users will test the function. If the first time use provides a
positive user experience, a majority of users may continue using the Internet on phone. The
threat is that if the user is not keen on mobile browsing, s/he has to find a way to map the
soft key to a more useful function.

Opera has been release its latest research into the industry of the mobile web and aside from pointing out that Opera Mini is now the most used mobile browser out there, it’s been taking a look at some of the content preferences for mobile surfers.
In this report you will find the following:
•Tracking the type of content across the top 100 sites visited by all Opera Mini users, we find:
•Social networking is popular worldwide and is the leading source of Web traffic for mobile devices.
•Successful sites on the Web find users on mobile phones, further underscoring the emergence of One Web.

The Web has revolutionized how we interact with and publish information, but up to now it has only been accessible to people with desktop devices. Web-enabled mobile phones now extend the expected global reach of the Web to three times that of today, touching one-third of the population1 of the planet.

The goal of this guide is to provide site owners with enough knowledge to get started with the creation of Web content for mobile users.

Before now, Web publishing for mobile users has been something of a mystery, partly because of a lack of information. The guide aims to provide an introduction for those not familiar with the Mobile Web. It contains techniques and information required to create a basic site that will work well on the majority of phones.
