There are a host of different legal options and requirements for companies who wish to be socially engaged. As reviewed in a May 25 Forbes article, here is a summary of five legal forms available to socially-minded companies. They include Benefit Corporations, California’s Flexible Purpose Corporations, Maryland Benefit LLC, L3Cs and B Corporations:

1. Benefit Corporations

This is a new class of corporation, pioneered by the Berwyn, Pa-based nonprofit B Lab. B Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. It is already law in seven states most recently Illinois and Louisiana. This legislation mandates that companies and their boards take into account public benefits that impact society and the environment when making decisions. These companies also have to issue an annual third party audit report that addresses their social and environmental goals. The goal is to give companies legal protection to take certain steps that benefit their non-financial objectives, even if it’s not so good for the bottom line. It is also reassuring to shareholders who are looking for greater corporate responsibility from the companies they invest in.

For more information on Benefit Corporations click here.

2. California’s Flexible Purpose Corporations

This was passed into law in California last October. Flexible Purpose Corporations also allows for Benefit Corporations. Flexible Purpose Corporations, unlike the Benefit variety, don’t have to meet general public benefits. Instead, they can specify at least one “special purpose”–addressing environmental sustainability, for example, or building a park. So the social focus is a lot more narrowly defined than it is with Benefit Corporations. Ultimately, the Flexible Purpose is designed for larger, more traditional companies that want to consider matters other than the financial bottom line, but aren’t “mission driven at their core,” according to Heather Van Dusen, a senior associate at B Lab.

For more information about Flexible Purpose Corporations click here.

3. Maryland Benefit LLC

In addition to allowing for Benefit Corporations, Maryland also permits companies to do the same thing but as a Limited Liability Company. That way, businesses already registered as LLCs don’t have to convert over to a corporate structure. The designation was created by legislation signed on May 19 by Gov. Martin O’Malley. The new law protects benefit LLCs from lawsuits by their members if they make decisions that put the environment, community, or social causes over making a profit. It is aimed at firms that want to make social activism part of their corporate mission.

For more information about Maryland Benefit LLC click here.

4. L3Cs

They’re low-profit limited liability companies with a charitable or educational purpose. There are about 600 such companies in nine states. Proponents created L3Cs to be entities that can be treated as Program Related Investments (PRIs) by foundations. By law, foundations have to direct 5% of their assets to charitable purposes every year. They can do that through PRIs, as long as the organization they’re investing in has a charitable or educational purpose and doesn’t include making a profit as a significant goal. Plus, for-profit investors can put money into an L3C and, as a result, companies potentially can attract considerably more funding. Foundations have been slow to adopt PRIs. But, with new rulings from the IRS, that could change soon.

For more information about L3Cs click here.

5. B Corporations

This isn’t a corporate structure, even though that word is in the name. It’s a certification from B Lab, which rates triple-bottom-line companies. (Think of Fair Trade USA, which certifies Fair Trade companies). Started in 2007, there are now 530 such businesses. Ratings cover five areas–society, environment, employees and so on–with 130 to 180 factors depending on company size and industry. Businesses have to score over 80 out of a total of 200 points. There also are unannounced audits of about 10% of all certified companies every year.

If you read my first review of the L’BRI skin care products, then you likely remember that I was ecstatic with the results. These organic aloe based products are the only skin care line I’ve ever used that produced a noticeable difference in the appearance of my skin, actually making my face look younger…woo hoo! I have now been using them for nearly two months and am happy to report that I’m still seeing positive effects.

Brian, one of the co-founders of the company was kind enough to send some serums to try out, as well as another basic kit which I shared with my neighbor, Linda. Seeing the difference with my own skin is one thing, but to actually notice the difference on someone else really speaks volumes! I have seriously stopped her in passing on several occasions to compliment her skin. Linda is in her fifties and I can tell a significant improvement in her face looking tighter, more evenly colored and having a healthy glow. In her words, “The Smooth n’ Firm Eye Repair Gel cannot be complimented enough. Not only does it puff up and conceal the tiny lines around my eyes, but I’m also using it to conceal the lines around my mouth and it works great. I like the Gentle Freshener so much that in addition to my morning and night routine, I’ve started spritzing it on throughout the day because it feels good and ads a natural pink glow to my skin. This Modern Hippie is in Love!”

Although Linda and I are both impressed with the products, one thing that we noticed is that the Moisturizing Lotion can feel a little heavy at times. When I asked a L’BRI consultant about this, she pointed out that while some companies use water as a main ingredient, L’BRI does not. (This is much better on the wallet since we’re not paying for any filler.) However, she recommended we mix a little warm water with the lotion for better results. We took her advice and have found that this solved the issue.

As for the anti-aging serums, I’ve been using the Maxifirm, Dermaplex A and the High Anti-Oxidant Night Repair Treatment for 30 days and I definitely notice improved tightness in my skin as well as the lines across my forehead fading. These are two lines that have been there so long, it seems like I was born with them; so any improvement is rather astonishing and certainly makes looking in the mirror a happier experience.

I continue to be impressed with L’BRI. I have full intentions to keep using these products and can confidently recommend them to others. The $6.95 sample kit can’t be beat for a way to test them out without breaking the bank. Overall, I give them two thumbs up and wrinkle free smile!

Among the many natural plants and herbs that grow in Africa and have long been known to be highly beneficial to humans, the oil produced from the pits of the fruit of the Argan tree now enter into the hottest anti-ageing wonders that help indigenous women at the same time.

Once a common tree all over North Africa, the Argan tree dwindled in number until recent government measures were enacted to protect it and preserve the living of thousands of women in the kingdom of Morocco. The species Argania spinosa has been declared rare and endangered, and reforestation efforts are helping it to make a comeback as demand for its oil has increased.

The Berber women of the region have long used Argan oil to nourish their skin and hair against the harsh conditions found in the desert-like environment of southern Morocco. In addition to the oil being applied topically, it is also used for bread dipping and mixed with almonds and honey to make a tasty paste. Today, many of the women in the Argan forest region work in a fair trade union (50+ cooperatives have been established) to produce as much of the oil as possible to meet a world demand that began in the 1990s. Part of their profits is then put back into the reforestation project, which will ensure harvest of the oil for generations to come.

Another benefit of the spread of Argan trees is the help it can give to halt the spread of the Sahara Desert as their twisted trunks sink deep roots into the ground and help to stop soil erosion. The sometimes-200-year-old trees produce numerous kernels that have super-high levels of Vitamin E and essential fatty acids. When placed on hair, for example, the oil penetrates the shafts, roots and pores and repairs cells, giving a shine and healthy look that many women long for.

Argan oil is generally used to alleviate dry hair and scalp, split ends, dandruff and the effects of over-use of hair styling products. Most treatment programs call for leaving the oil on the hair for at least 30 minutes or even overnight as the head is wrapped in a towel. For split ends, a bit of oil rubbed into them can help; for dry scalp and other more serious conditions, the oil should be massaged into the hair.

For the skin, Argan oil should first be applied at night to make sure your skin responds well to it. Once you have seen initial positive results, you can put it on problem areas that need extra hydration up to twice a day. Some women put Argan oil as a base for makeup, while others apply even to their lips for hydration therapy. Only a few drops of the oil are needed at a time.

The other part of the body that can be helped by Argan oil are your nails. Mix equal parts Argan oil and lemon juice and soak for 10 minutes. You can also rub a bit of the oil on your hands before going to bed to keep them looking healthy.

Argen oil is the perfect way to organically protect your skin and hair while providing real support to Moroccan women dedicated to fair trade and environmental sustainability!

EarthTalk®
E – The Environmental Magazine

Dear EarthTalk: A few years back a study found over 200 chemicals in the umbilical cords of newborns, particularly African American, Asian and Hispanic babies. What are the causes of this phenomenon and what can be done about it? – Bettina Olsen, New York, NY

The study referenced found traces of some 232 synthetic chemicals in cord blood samples from 10 different babies of African American, Asian and Hispanic descent born in 2009 in different parts of the U.S. Study sponsors Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Rachel’s Network were looking to find out if the hormone-disrupting chemical Bisphenol A (BPA), a plasticizer widely used in food and drink storage containers, is present in the cord blood of minority babies in the U.S. Sadly and not surprisingly, BPA turned up in nine of the 10 cord blood samples tested. But perhaps even worse is the study’s detection of whole new raft of chemicals showing up in babies’ cord blood for the first time. Some of these newer offenders include tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) from computer circuit boards, synthetic fragrances used in common cosmetics and detergents and Teflon-relative perfluorobutanoic acid.

The 2009 study was a follow-up to an earlier analysis of chemicals in cord blood in the mainstream U.S. population during 2004 births. That earlier study found some 287 different industrial chemicals and pollutants in babies’ cord blood, although BPA was not yet on EWG’s watch list at the time. The more recent study focused on minority babies because minority communities in the U.S. tend to bear a disproportionate pollution burden given their closer proximity to busy roads, industrial sites and older housing. But EWG points out that they tested for chemicals that are likely found in virtually every American household, so none of us are immune to exposure. EWG hopes that by continuing to monitor the chemicals we are born with it can hold corporate polluters’ and government regulators’ feet to the fire in regard to waste outputs and pollution mitigation.

EWG did not look for chemicals associated with smoking or alcohol consumption on the part of mothers, instead focusing on contaminants from exposures to consumer products and commercial chemicals omnipresent on supermarket shelves. To EWG, the presence of these chemicals in umbilical cord blood represents “a significant failure on the part of the Congress and government agencies” charged with protecting human health. “Our results strongly suggest that the health of all children is threatened by trace amounts of hundreds of synthetic chemicals coursing through their bodies from the earliest stages of life.”

Part of the problem is outdated laws governing the handling and use of toxic chemicals. Currently 1976’s Toxic Substances Control Act is the law of the land in regard to controlling the distribution, use and disposal of toxic chemicals nationwide. But EWG and other groups complain that hundreds of thousands of new chemical formulations are unleashed on an unwitting public every year via America’s store shelves because the federal government assumes new products and ingredients to be innocent until proven guilty. These critics would like to see the federal government take a more proactive role in approving new substances for use in consumer products, not to mention residential and workplace environments.

On the legislative front, green groups are pinning their hopes for a reformed Toxic Substances Control Act on New Jersey Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg’s Safe Chemicals Act (S. 847), introduced last fall. The bill is currently spinning its wheels in committee hearings, but its 17 bi-partisan co-sponsors are optimistic that it will come up for a floor vote before the 112th Congress wraps up the end of this year.

Many people truly believe that the solar panels are some magical units, which can literally help them to save a lot of money on energy bills. However, the truth is that these units are not magic. This is because they are actually powered by the sun light through specific photovoltaic cells. This thing means that as long as the sun shines in the sky, these devices can stay on. But, the truth is that this theory relates to the most basic aspect of the functionality of the solar units without telling us too many things about the effectiveness of these units. In order to understand how we can keep our solar units as efficient as possible, it is very important to know a few things about them. This article debates specific functional and maintenance facts that relate to the efficiency of the photovoltaic systems.

Photovoltaic Panels: Find Out How They Actually Work

In order to comprehend specific aspects that link to the effectiveness of different solar units, it is essential to know how these systems actually work. In short, any user should be aware of the fact that the solar cells are actually built from semiconductors, which ensure the flow of electrons based on the energy they get from the sunlight. The flow of electrons is actually controlled by specific electric fields, which can be used to direct the electric current towards particular devices that it must power. By simply understanding the functional principle that lies behind the solar units, anyone can easily understand that covering his or her property with photovoltaic panels represents a great life-time investment, which gives us the chance to lower and even eliminate our energy bills.

Things That You Should Do to Maintain the Effectiveness of the Solar Units

After installing the solar units that you need in order to sustain particular energy consumption, the most important thing that you have to do is to maintain them. Similar to any other systems, the solar units must also be maintained in order to ensure proper functionality. A great thing that relates to these types of systems is the fact that they do not come along with different parts, such as hoses and belts, which need to be replaced from time to time. This thing leads us towards typical maintenance jobs, which pretty much include tasks like:

Washing, wiping, and drying panels on a regular basis

Frequent inspection of panels especially in dusty areas

Removal of any debris, bird droppings, grime, and dirt whenever necessary

Use of special lotions, filtered and warm water, and soft brushes whenever cleaning tasks are to be performed

Removal of snow from the panels as often as necessary

Hiring contractors for high buildings where specific inspections and maintenance tasks are difficult to complete

As you are able to see, all these points relate to some serious aspects that any homeowner, who uses solar units, should definitely consider. By simply performing periodical maintenance tasks, you have great chances to keep your solar units fully functional.

Top Reasons Why You Should Keep Your Solar Unit Performing at Its Maximum Capacity

Having a solar unit that performs at its maximum capacity is very important especially if you want to make the most out of your initial investment. Most probably, similar to many other homeowners, you also want to save energy whenever possible. This is where the solar units come into the scene. This is because the photovoltaic units that you are able to find these days can literally help you to save energy. However, in order to enjoy the maximum efficiency of these systems, you must perform specific maintenance assignments that can keep them fully functional. By simply completing the aforementioned maintenance tasks, the solar units can perform at their maximum capacities even after many years of use.

But, how can you know if the photovoltaic panels are clean? In order to complete this assignment, you must check if the panels are sparkling whenever the sunlight hits their surface. In case that they sparkle in the sun, you do not have to perform any cleaning tasks. If dust or debris prevent them from showing some really clean surfaces, it is time to get a brush, water, and appropriate substances to clean the panels thoroughly.

A few weeks ago my family and another family (Total 9 people) wanted to go to a restaurant; so my wife tells me to find the restaurant menus and number. So as I wrote in Mother Earth News, my new favorite website for looking up phone numbers is the YellowPages.com. Just sign up on the Yellow Pages through Facebook or Twitter and get numbers for FREE!! It’s true and they want you to opt out of getting the books as they are working with the EPA to be a leader in this effort to reduce paper consumption.

Back to the story. I went to my IPhone and found everything I needed for Yama Sushi in Briarcliff Manor, New York, (i.e. got my restaurant menus and could call straight from the link ). What happenes when we get there?; It’s crowded!!

So my wife calls our friends to go to another restaurant called Oriental Diner in Hawthorne, New York. I mean there was NINE of us so we had to find the best place.

Green Lighting Connection

Here’s the Green Lighting connection for everyone out there trying to go green and find a quick way.

I stated in the Huffington Post a while ago that when you write a book called Green Lighting, your perspective of this world really changes. So every restaurant I go to saddens me by their lighting. It stinks and also it’s cutting into their companies profits. That then reduces employment options for the rest of us.

I mean if we changed every light in every restaurant and private corporate complex. Here is a moonshot:

Let us change every street lamp in America to LED.

As I recently wrote up an excerpt on green lighting I realized numbers say more than I can regarding retrofits, jobs and energy prices:

In California, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) officials switched to LEDs for functional and outdoor lighting, reducing annual lighting costs by $55,000 and lifetime maintenance costs by $980,000. In Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Sentry Equipment Corporation chose to light its newfactory almost entirelywith LEDs, both interior and exterior. The initial cost was three times more than incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, but this price premium is expected to be repaid within two years from electricity savings. The bulbs are expected to last for 20 years.

James Cameron Wants Green Lighting Too!

Recently I attended the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards that James Cameron was being awarded for his innovative use of technology with the movie Avatar.

Back when the BP oil spill occurred, I had the chance to interview him at the Environmental Media Association awards dinner. What he stated then still unfortunately still rings true: The Gulf Is Not Clean!! I thanked James for his efforts by giving him a copy of my book Green Lighting. He was extremely appreciative and after our discussion about the World Bank and energy projects across the globe we agreed at that moment about one thing; if we just do green lighting across America we can easily save this country. From taxes, jobs, energy efficiency which reduces power plant emissions, to some of our larger national security issues regarding energy security. Everything! It is so important to recognize that each one of us can make a difference.

In the book Green Lighting, you’ll find:

Flip the switch to energy-efficient lighting

This do-it-yourself guide makes it easy to upgrade residential and commercial lighting to reduce costs and environmental impact while maintaining or even improving the quality of the lighting. Filled with step-by-step instructions, Green Lighting shows you how to save money and energy with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), compact fluorescent lighting (CFL), solar lights, windows, skylights, fixtures, controls, and other bright ideas. Methods for calculating return on investment plus recommended sources for energy-efficient products, are included in this practical resource.

Additionally you’ll find that Green Lighting covers:

Color temperature measurements

In-depth details on the differences between LEDs and CFLs How utilities bill for electricity usage

Comparing wattage and determining energy savings ENERGY STAR® ratings Purchasing appropriate bulbs, fixtures, and sensors

Developing a comprehensive green lighting plan for your entire home, office, or commercial environment Incandescent, halogen, and gas-discharge lighting Solar and next-generation lighting.

Green Lighting is really the way to go because as my friends at MSI LED company have helped transform energy savings into massive amounts of cash coming back to their bottom line. We are talking about Macy’s, Jones NY, TD Bank and countless others. After the first month of those bulbs being in one store, Macy’s and Jones NY wanted in, saving millions per year…Millions!!

Green Lighting can help YOU to make a greater impact on this economy, the green jobs needed for us to succeed as a country and more importantly get us a cleaner, greener more cost effective world.

So when you go to a restaurant or need to get restaurant menus after writing the book Green Lighting and understanding it’s correlation to everything, your trip to a restaurant will never be the same again.

Dear EarthTalk: What is the “Fair Trade Your Supermarket” campaign? – Brian Howley, Washington, DC

A project of the non-profit Green America, the “Fair Trade Your Supermarket” campaign aims to empower consumers to advocate for more “Fair Trade” products on store shelves at their local supermarkets. Fair trade is a system of exchange that honors producers, communities and the environment by ensuring that farmers and artisans throughout the developing world are paid fair prices for their work and have direct involvement in the marketplace. The goal of the wider Fair Trade movement, according to Green America, is to build real and lasting relationships between producers in developing countries and businesses and consumers around the world.

And that’s where your neighborhood grocer comes in. “While the Fair Trade movement is gaining steam nationwide, most of our supermarkets still carry few–if any–Fair Trade products on their shelves,” reports Green America. “Together, we can put Fair Trade products within reach for millions of Americans.”

And just how does Green America expect us to do this? “First, take stock of Fair Trade products in your supermarket—look for coffee, tea, chocolate, rice, sugar, honey, wine, fresh fruit, and olive oil.” Scan the relevant aisles for third-party certifier Fair Trade USA’s distinctive black-and-white “Fair Trade Certified” label, which is only attached to imported goods where the producers receive fair prices for their products and where strict socio-economic and environmental criteria are met during production. Alternatively, look for the logos of other third-party certifiers such as “Fair for Life” or “Fair Trade Federation” on product labels if you think fair trade versions may be available in a given product line.

“Then, you can encourage the store to stock more Fair Trade products by talking to the store manager as a loyal customer,” adds Green America. They suggest using comment cards, which can be key to getting a store with no Fair Trade items to start carrying them. “Every time you go grocery shopping, drop a comment card in the box asking your manager to stock Fair Trade items.” Of course, talking to a store manager in person may be even more effective, especially if you are armed with a pile of your receipts from the store from the previous month or two to show how much spending power you alone would be able to allocate toward Fair Trade versions of the items you are buying there.

Another creative way to spread the Fair Trade gospel would be by volunteering to hand out free samples of Fair Trade products that the store already sells in order to raise awareness and build consumer demand. “Stores sell more of a product when a sampling table is set out, and if you, your friends and family are working the table, the labor is free for the store too.”

But why stop with your local market? If there is a chain supermarket outlet in your area, take it to the top by writing an e-mail, letter or postcard to corporate headquarters informing them of your desire to buy Fair Trade items in all of their stores. Check out the Fair Trade Your Supermarket website (link below) for more tips on how to make your next shopping trip fairer to the planet and its people.

The term “electric bicycle” seems a bit counterintuitive. How can a bicycle be electric? Doesn’t a bicycle mean pedals, handbrakes and gears? Suffice it to say, bicycles are getting a bit of a makeover.

The electric bicycle still has all the traditional features of a bicycle but also contains a small electric motor. Most of the time, the bikes will need to be pedaled around just like a regular manual bicycle. Twist the throttle, however, and the electric motor kicks in without any pedaling required. The typical electric bike motor can reach a speed of 20mph and travel 20-30 miles on a single charge. The bikes aren’t meant to get you everywhere via motor—just through the tough parts of your ride such as hills and busy streets.

The most obvious use for electric cycles is the work commute. Typical bicycle commuting means pedaling up and down hills and spending lots of time on the road. The electric bicycle could be a solution to these problems. Hills that strike fear in the hearts of cyclist commuters could be overcome with a simple twist of the throttle. That means no more arriving at the office dripping in sweat and too exhausted to start the day. Additionally, being able to tackle hills and other spaces with a 20mph motor means shorter commute times. Electric cycles could cut a 30 minute commute time by 10 or 15 minutes. A 20 minute bike commute in most cities isn’t that much longer than a car commute.

Why choose electric cycling over car commuting? Well some of the obvious answers include saving money on gas, taking your exhaust fumes off the road and generally living healthier. But also, bike commuting is a great way for cities to reduce traffic congestion. Electric bikes can whip past traffic jams on bike lanes and bike paths. Additionally, bicycling is a great way to get to know your community. Waiting for a stoplight in a car is boring and frustrating. Waiting for a stoplight on a bike might be an opportunity to meet the cyclist next to you.

So, before you do the car commute again, consider the electric bike. It’s a great way to save money, mother earth and your mornings.

Tea has long been regarded as an exotic drink of many flavors, colors, and aromas. Harvested from all corners of the globe, tea-making and consumption is truly an art. From green to white, herbal to blooming, each type has different characteristics and benefits.

Most teas, excluding herbal kinds, are made from the Camilla sinensis plant. Their preparation differs, though, which contributes to different flavors and health benefits. Read on to learn about the natural tea’s family tree and discover which one is for you.

Green

Green tea is steamed, not fermented, which contributes to a grassy taste that can be mixed with scents and fruits to make it sweet or bittersweet. Low in caffeine, a cup a green tea amounts to only five to ten percent of what you would find in a cup of coffee. It’s also packed with antioxidants that have been linked with lowering cholesterol, controlling weight, and healthy skin.

White

Once enjoyed only by royalty, white tea is the least processed of the teas. It is made from the buds of the tea plant, not mature leaves, and fermentation time is minimal. It’s very light in color and flavor, offering a subtle sweet taste. It’s also very low in caffeine, and boasts antioxidant-related health benefits like a better skin and a strengthened immune system.

Blooming

Sometimes referred to as “flowering tea,” blooming tea is tea with an artisan twist. It is hand tied and blooms as it steeps. You can usually find it served in a clear glass to show of what is probably its most memorable feature: the natural beauty of the tea arrangement. Often, the quality of its tea leaves is very high. It’s a good choice from a health perspective, too – its mix of tea, flowers, and herbs means that you can enjoy health perks from all these natural elements.

Herbal

Herbal teas come from herbs, flowers, roots, and seeds, not the Camilla sinensis plant. They are usually caffeine free. Since the herbs in these teas can vary so much, the flavors and health benefits are diverse. For example, peppermint tea can aid with digestion, chamomile is great for helping you sleep, and rosemary can reduce headaches.

With tea, you have countless options, and each type provides unique flavors and benefits. Thanks to the abundance of choices, you are sure to find one that suits your taste buds and your health needs.
