eleanor woke up this morning and ran into our room with the biggest smile on her face. it's back to school! her first day of the second year of pre-k and this year her best friend goes there with her!

i'm so proud of my big girl.

the birth of arthur lee

i cannot adequately put into words what an amazing and spiritual experience it was to be present for that fulcrum, the space in between the two worlds of arthur lee. i have labored twice myself and those experiences alone have changed me but it is an experience entirely different to witness a woman birthing.

i am beyond grateful to my brother and sister in law for allowing me to be present in their most intimate moments to document the birth of their son. it was an honor.

this is the childhood i always dreamed of for my children. weekends spent on my grandparents farm. this weekend was perfect, full of hammock swings, creek exploring, learning to fish, and just play. there's something about the pace at the farm and the freedom my children feel here that makes us all the best version of ourselves.

i was cooking dinner saturday night and looked out the window to catch e in her fairy dress picking "flowers" (weeds) from the yard. i love watching my children interact with their world and i love that i get a front row seat to observe where they find beauty. there is currently a bouquet of weeds on my dining room table.

eleanor finished her first year of pre-k today. what a year it has been! she's wearing nightgowns to bed now, she asks for scented lotion after her bath, has her own chapstick, she sounds out words, can recognize nearly the entire alphabet and numbers, and has graduated to drawing pictures of actual things. and just for juxtaposition and because as her mama i sometimes miss my baby girl, i rocked her to sleep tonight.

f: this kid and his donut with "spwinkewls". i swear we couldn't get to the park fast enough for him to tear into it and then when he sat in front of it he just stared adoringly for a few minutes before diving in. he kills me.

e: my girl has outgrown the swings. she is looking so much bigger and older to me lately.

we're getting a little excited for our hawaii vacation and someone couldn't wait to be on the beach so she decided the rug was sand and we had ourselves an indoor beach

eleanor: every saturday stijn packs a lunch and brings the kids to the shop to visit mama. yesterday's weather was perfect so they ran and played in the parking lot for a few hours. since the super bowl, eleanor has been saying, "i'm going to run like a girl." yesterday she took off towards me with this look of pure joy running as fast as she could, arms pumping, and hair blowing.

felix: he's been all sorts of two years old lately and it hasn't been the easiest but then he puts on a lion hat and roars through a smile and i just can't...

doesn't spring make you love your life. after the long suffering winter spring always arrives as the hero and this weekend we gladly welcomed her. sunday was the perfect day. we woke up and had our usual sunday pancake breakfast, the kids built a tent on the living room floor and read books, i folded the mt. everest of laundry, and then we packed lunch and headed to the park. afterwards we stopped at the neighborhood creamy whip for the first cone of the season and on the way home eleanor asked if she could ride her scooter. at this point i wondered if we should jump all into the nice weather activities or if we should enter this next season slowly so as to avoid shocking our systems. i opted for jumping all in and we topped it off with some sidewalk chalk coloring. we may have outdone it yesterday but man was it lovely and i cannot wait to do it all again. spring, you are wonderful and i will love you always.

eleanor has been really into knock knock jokes lately and entertains us regularly with some pretty cute ones she learned in a book. yesterday in the car she made this one up:

"knock knock."
"who's there?"
"mashed potatoes."
"mashed potatoes who?"
"mashed potatoes all over your face!"

oh the mind of a three year old.

felix turned two on tuesday and i cannot believe it. my baby boy has been with us for two whole years. we celebrated his day with our traditional birthday pancakes, lots of balloons, and at his request, dinner at skyline.

e: my little lady making valentines for her class, teachers, friends, and family. i am so proud of her for signing her name to all of them!

f: "vroom vroom, choo choo" give this kid anything with wheels and he's happy

we've been trying to stay busy and avoid the stir crazies while being snowed in by doing all sorts of crafts. we made necklaces and bracelets, played with play dough, and painted lots of pictures.

we're snowed in today and enjoying the coziness of oversized sweaters, a warm fire, a new collection of the palest pink roving for yet another weaving, handmade ceramic mugs filled with chamomile rose tea, the spring-like pink of tulips, and the most delicate of dresses. i have fully embraced the color in it's palest and softest forms and celebrate that it makes my daughter happy not because as a girl she is predetermined to like it but because she finds beauty in its shade. this grey and white loving mama who is most comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt has a pink and purple loving daughter who would prefer to be in a dress at all times and it is ok, it is good.

with the new year and the realization that i dropped the ball on the 52 project last year, having not picked up the camera since week 46, i have decided to participate again this year (sort of). i will challenge myself to pick up the camera and post portraits as often as i can. i cannot say that there will be 52 full weeks, obviously as this is already week 3 and my first post, but i will try because man do i love looking back at them.

so here are a couple of pics of the kids from our first week back...

e: i bought these knit finger puppets 12 years ago in the hopes that one day i would have children to play with them.

f: he loves wearing tiger and lion masks and roaring at us. it's something he's loved since his opa played with him here this summer.

our fairy princess ("without wings", she kept saying) and her dinosaur friend braved the cold and went trick or treating on friday. we went to my aunt and uncles house again this year for a soup potluck. my kids love their kids and eleanor had the best night tagging along with the big girls. as they left each house she would yell, "guys, wait for me!" as she ran to catch up to them (a few feet in front of her waiting). felix was really into it until he face planted on the pavement, which happened two houses in. eventually the cold got to them both and we headed back where they proceeded to eat nearly all of their candy and no soup.

^^^ that little sweetheart keeping e warm under her cloak is isabel, who is eleanor's favorite person in the world and we are so grateful to her for always lovingly allowing her little cousin tag along.
