my studio class too me to mumbai this semester. i have always dreamt about going to india. since i was a kid, i have been fascinated by its cultures, languages, religions, architecture and music.

we saw so much in mumbai within a week. the extreme way in which the island city has grown during the past century was astonishing. our site in south mumbai is perhaps a miniature of the city. with 4 different constituent groups, including high-end residents, business, a cultural center and informal housing dwellers, adjacent to one another, the premise of this studio project is set of such complicated and delicate issues that i feel the solution(s), if there is one, will be beyond architecture and planning.

the city is built along a corridor of vehicular transportation system. many of the high-rises - built, incomplete, under-construction, and abandoned - remain empty. the desert city is lit by its highways; the clusters of new business centers are the dark voids decorating the skyline.

on my way back from mumbai, i was unprepared to make a detour in dubai in which i was lost in both time and space.

senegal

it's been five months since my last blog entry. i have entered my third year in architecture school. my option design studio took me to senegal in november. the trip was memorable in many different ways. when we were in senegal, my professor was asked how the trip could have changed or impacted the students. she replied that changes would not happen right away. instead, there would be a profound effect that helped direct the career path of the students in the long run.
