In the late 1970s, the German music scene was shaken up by a virtual explosion of new bands that sounded radically different to anything that had come before. They played music that was experimental, playful, absurd, minimalist and astute, with lyrics that were sung – or more commonly screamed – exclusively in German. Appalled rather than enthralled by this new expressionism, the record industry initially showed no interest in these groups, so new platforms had to be set up in order to spread the virus. Small companies like ZickZack and Ata Tak started to release records by these young artists who were springing up like mushrooms. The independent record label was born.

The spirit of this new movement – later branded Neue Deutsche Welle – emerged from a collision between the self-confident attitude of punk, the legacy of Germany’s electronic avant-garde and a belief in the imminence of an atomic apocalypse. In his book “Als die Welt noch unterging” (When the world was still going to end), Frank Apunkt Schneider describes this despair as a joyful dance on the edge of the volcano, which is what underlies the unusual music that you will hear in these programmes.

Continuamos el doble monográfico dedicado al compositor, artista sonoro, improvisador e intérprete Markus Breuss, nacido en Altstätten (Suiza) en 1956. En esta segunda parte dialogamos acerca de sus actividades en las últimas dos décadas, así como de sus experiencias en la India y otros países asiáticos, y sus proyectos actuales. Escuchamos trabajos realizados en solitario (“Ko-Mo-Bi”, “Playa – Forest – Mobile – TV Mind” -del disco AWAKE HU-, así como las secciones “Feld B25″ y “Feld A23″ de “Pasaje”, obra compuesta para la Banda Municipal de Barcelona), y también presentamos el resultado de sus colaboraciones con otros músicos, como Tsukiko Amakawa (“Modelo Piloto 2.5″), Pedro López (tanto en el dúo ruidista Scorecrackers -con las composiciones “y2 d2″, “rtq”, “oyk” y “rñp”- como, más recientemente, en el dúo de free-funk Slesh) y Víctor Vázquez (en el dúo acústico Interworks).

Veterano improvisador, compositor y autor, Wade Matthews (La Chapelle-St. Mesmin, Francia, 1955) es Doctor en composición y electroacústica por la Columbia University de Nueva York, donde escribió su tesis doctoral sobre la improvisación dirigida por sonidos electrónicos en la Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Desde entonces, se dedica a la libre improvisación musical con medios acústicos y electrónicos.
Activo principalmente como concertista, ha presentado su música en el Museum of Modern Art de Nueva York, el Centro Nacional de las Artes de México, D. F., el Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires y en innumerables conciertos y festivales en Europa, las Américas y Oriente Medio. Además de sus grabaciones para las radios nacionales de Francia y España y la BBC, Matthews ha publicado más de quince discos para sellos europeos y estadounidenses. Como autor, Matthews publicó en 2012 el libro Improvisando, la libre creación musical (editorial Turner, Madrid). Ha coordinado números de la Revista de Occidente y Doce Notas Preliminares y ha publicado en La Balsa de la Medusa, además de once tomos de la Historia de la Música Deutsche Grammophon.
Desde 1989, Matthews vive en Madrid, donde coordina el ciclo de conciertos de música improvisada ¡Escucha! en el espacio CRUCE: arte y pensamiento contemporáneo.

El vasco Miguel A. García aka Xedh (Gasteiz) es uno de los artistas sonoros mas inquietos del panorama español. Su obra abarca tanto la composición como la improvisación electroacústica. Utiliza sonoridades obtenidas a partir de residuos de dispositivos electrónicos, a menudo interrelacionandose con grabaciones de campo o instrumentos acústicos, en busca de un tipo de experiencia intima, inmersiva e intensa. Una “música” de formas aventuradas y llena de contrastes, no exenta de sentido del humor.
Con su proyecto en solitario, ha participado en festivales de música experimental de toda España, incluyendo Ertz (Navarra), Experimentaclub (Madrid), Lem (Barcelona), Mem (Bilbao) o Sonikas (Vallecas), y ha tocado en multiples espacios incluyendo el Auditorio Nacional de Música (Madrid), o los museos Artium (Vitoria), Guggenheim (Bilbao), Macuf (A Coruña) o Vostell Malpartida (Caceres). Fuera de España, solo en diferentes grupos, ha tocado en espacios y festivales de Alemania, Belgica, EEUU, Francia, Holanda, Noruega, Polonia y Portugal. Joven miembro en la escena de improvisación libre internacional, entre sus colaboradores habituales se encuentran Tomas Grís, Oier I.A., Xabier Lopez, Oscar Martin (Noish), Seijiro Murayama, Hector Rey o Artur Vidal. Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center announces the 2013 New York Electronic Art Festival in collaboration with River to River Festival, Trinity Wall Street, The Lower East Side Girls Club, The New York Hall of Science, The Hells Kitchen Cultural Center, Electronic Music Foundation and other partners. The festival is a summer series of concerts, workshops, and exhibitions centered on the cutting-edge work being done at the intersection of art and technology.

June 1 through July 31

Harvestworks’ New York Electronic Art Festival presents innovative work made with the most advanced technology that is rapidly altering the conditions of our lives. The festival will focus on the way that technology can alter, expand and exhilarate our perceptions through the creative energies of the artist. We spotlight new artworks from the Harvestworks TEAM (Technology, Engineering, Art and Music) lab and new works created in our local, national and international community.

“New York is a major hub of experimental artistic exploration of art and technology worldwide, so it is essential that the New York Electronic Art Festival bring together innovative practitioners to share their work with the public through immersive sound and color, responsive environments, interactive strategies and experimental instruments,” – Carol Parkinson, Harvestworks Executive Director.

The festival will take place from June 1 – July 31, 2013. Events are open to the public. Venues include The Church for All Nations, 417 W 57th St New York, NY 10019, The New York Hall of Science 47-01 111th St New York, NY 11368, Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University 3 Spruce St. NYC 10038, Harvestworks, 596 Broadway Suite 602 NYC 10012, Saint Cornelius Chapel on Governors Island.

The New York Electronic Art Festival was created to provide a responsive public context for the appreciation of cutting-edge electronic artwork through concerts, workshops, and exhibitions of the highest quality across the arts and technology spectrum.
