5:15 and the roads are completely clear. Probably the fact that it's Saturday too. I wish I was sleeping in too. Baby is sick, hardly sleeps wont stop coughing, won't eat. To children's hospital we go.

6:11 we are here and checked in and in the room. We get better cable than I have at home, catching up on some TLC shows. What is the deal with these gypsy weddings? Craaaaazy. Have I been living in a hole for not knowing there were still gypsys around? The magazines are up to date too. So. Much. Entertainment. How much time do I have? Should I get into a book?

6:17 nurse just came in. She heard he was cute and smiley. She said they all love his name, she said there are 3 families ahead of me and a new doctor just came on. She brought me a refreshing beverage - apple juice! If only they had diet coke and this would be heaven. Minus the sick kid.

7:34 doctor just left the room. Croup. Debating the steroids being extra careful because of his history. He could hardly hear his heart murmur do he thinks the hole is almost closed.

7:59 medicine taken we are good to go. Now if I could just take a nap on this bed. Where's the mint on my pillow... Yawn. I can drive home like this right? Boston is wide awake and suddenly alert. Crazy man. He's been up as long as I have.

Where I freak out about a pop can

I want to rant a bit, and I figure this is the safest place to do it because, its MY blog.

Its not a well hidden secret that I love me some diet coke. It started as regular coke and as I had kids and spend more time at home I find I NEED it to get through the day. More than one constitutes having to drink the diet.

Husband decided that “we” need to eat more healthy. That to him means no pop. To me those things are different. I am fine with the food, but don’t ask a mom whose highlight of her day is one little can of pop to give up her can of pop. Not your choice to make buster.

So I bought my own box. When husband saw it he flipped and was not happy with me. I told him he made a decision for himself and NOT for me. I am keeping my pop.

Cut to last night. I bought a box for myself and hid it. There was one left so I put it in the fridge, in the very bottom drawer, under the lettuce and limes, and went to the cheap movies with my mom. This morning when I woke up there was one diet coke left on the kitchen table with 2 sips taken out of it, luke warm.

RUDE! Its not your drink, you are eating “healthy” remember? I find it highly offensive that he would refuse to buy them, get mad that I bought them, then take THE LAST ONE and leave it 3/4 full taunting me. What a waste of precious nectar!

So I am spending my afternoon stocking up and hiding my new stash.

Preemie Dolls - Cute or Creepy

My sons were born premature. 29 weeks. They weighed 2 lbs 8oz and 2 lbs 12 oz. It was a challenging time, but I felt like I got a mini nursing degree and brought into the secret NICU Mom's club. The group of moms who understand the traumatic births, stress of practically living in the hospital, gavage feeding your baby, teaching them how to suck, swallow, and breathe, etc. The list goes on. The things you don't really want to learn about.

A Nicu nurse told me I should keep some of the boys' preemie clothes and get a preemie doll. I am not quite sure if she meant a play doll. I assumed, I mean why else would you buy a doll? But as I googled "preemie dolls" I came across a whole new world.

At www.remembermepreemie.com/ you can order a doll (NOT A TOY) that is made to the exact size of your child. You can customize skin colors, face types (blank, sewn, drawn), hair, bald, or if their weight is an actual weight or 'feels right' weight.

Apparently, while not a toy, they are meant to show people how little your baby was and to compare sizes against as they grow.

I can see how these would be interesting to have, even kind of cute. If they weren't over $100 I might just get one. Maybe?

But then I stumbled onto something just a bit more creepy. Its called a Reborn.

These dolls look JUST like newborn babies. Apparently 'moms' are thrilled when they push them in a stroller and give them a pacifier that strangers confuse them for real babies. UMMM. Why? Why would you carry this doll around in a car seat and push it in a stroller. Trust me, its work. A car seat does not a cute accessory make. Then what do you do with them when you are not getting them dressed into their cute outfits and accessories? Do you buy them real cribs and see how creeped out people get? The even more insane fact is that these baby dolls sell around $800 on ebay and etsy. CRAAAAZY.

These twins are a steal at $336 for the pair.

So as a preemie mom, I am curious, and slightly creeped out that people are doing this. I want a $20 doll the size of a preemie to dress up in my preemie clothes and let my kids PLAY with. If it ends up thrown in a toy heap later on instead of my $800 crib for a fake baby, I will be okay with that!

Auburn Bay Showhomes - Calgary Interior Design

I ran to see some show homes today and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. These were well done, not cheesy, and not dark and depressing.

I love this kitchen. If it were my own home I would add pendants, but I love that even with a warm, mid tone paint color, it still feels bright with all the natural light, white cabinets, and lots of pot lights.

This little girls room I thought was really cute and princess feeling.

The Baby Room was well done. I LOOVE the kids art above the crib.

Although the bedding does nothing for me, I love the furniture in this room. The lamps are perfect and I love the mismatched night stands. The tree branch is my fav.

We ended up staying in this room for a while because there is a bucket of toys that someone refused to leave at the house. He wanted to play with each one, and then asked to take them home. He was thrilled!

This was in another house, but I loved the napkin rings and thought it was a nice place setting for decor purposes.

Busytown Busy! Live Show – Calgary

Jett and I had the awesome opportunity to go see Richard Scarry’s Busytown Live from Koba Entertainment. Of all the shows Koba puts on, this is the only one he hasn’t had a phase of watching 24/7. I did know he would enjoy it so I found some episodes on Netflix to watch and he has started asking for Lolly the worm. When we were watching it, Husband commented that our nephew LOVED lolly and his grandma made him a 5’ long stuffed lolly. Too cute.

We invited some friends to come with, as we knew they would like the show too. The first song was How busy is he? BUSYTOWN BUSY. It will be stuck in my head for a while.

We got amazing seats. The first Mezzanine, front row. We could have high fived the characters if they reached for us.

Jett was totally mesmerized and was really enthusiastic about the clapping. Katie kept asking about the light up wands. What are those? Where do we get them? Is that far away? Can we go now?

So of course we had to get some. Overall, the show was awesome, I think you could have cut the intermission and the last 10-15 minutes just because of the attention span of the 3 year olds. In the last few songs the kids were trying to climb on stage and all gathered at the front. Nothing tramatic happened, but the kids enjoyed dancing in the aisles.
Jett went to sleep with his special wand and hasn’t let it out of his sight since! Thanks Koba, we will FOR SURE be seeing you if any Backyardigans, May & Ruby, Caillou, or Toopy & Binoo come to Calgary.

Is Coconut Oil All its Cracked Up To Be?

So it seems that the buzz word I keep hearing these days is Coconut Oil. I keep hearing about it - what can't it do? I decided to try it. It seemed in my mind that only the all organic, granola, hippie type people were the only ones using it, so I asked my friends on facebook. I was actually shocked at how many people use it and for so many different uses.

You can use coconut oil in so many ways:

eat it plain - aids in multiple health uses
add as a supplement to smoothies
bake with it - used to replace butter or crisco
as a deep conditioner for your hair
as a oil for your hair (replace your moroccan oil or biosilk)
use as a lotion / massage oil
use on skin irritations - blisters, rashes, excema, burns
treat baby's cradle cap
helps prevent stretch marks (hello, where were you 9 months ago?)
helps fad stretch marks (I am using this every night in hopes!)
mix with baking soda for a natural goo-gone
use to dilute essential oils
use to pop popcorn

The jar arrived and I was picturing an oil, liquid based. Coconut oil is a solid at room temperature and melts at 76 degrees farenheit, so you just need to warm it up if you want to use it as a liquid. I had no doubt in its abilities as a moisturizer, and am dreaming of it erasing my stretch marks (haha there are plenty of those suckers to work on) but I am still using it hoping it will help to fade them. I will keep you posted. The part that threw me for a loop was cooking with it. I found tons of recipes online but I had a hard time finding some that used "normal" ingredients (read: the 5 basic ingredients I keep in my non-foodie kitchen). I don't own dates, coconut flour, flax seed, etc nor would I ever use them so I decided to experiment. I made basic chocolate chip cookies but instead of butter or oil I used the Coconut Oil. When I tasted the dough I could taste SLIGHT coconut-y-ness in it, but in a cookie that is all good. However, I don't think I would be able to detect it in the baked cookies unless you told me and I was "looking" tasting? for it. I am sure there are plenty of super healthy ways you can cook with it, but for an entry level healthy baking ingredient, this is the best one to get.

Keeping a 3 year old busy

This winter was hard for me. I had twin babies to take care of while trying to keep my 3 year old entertained. He is obsessed with all things Toy Story or Cars. He is also starting to get into super heros. After my failed attempts to DIY some super hero masks to have him dress up, I started to look online for inexpensive costumes for a boy. I found a great siteAnytimecostumes.com and got the Buzz Lightyear costume. I ordered it a size big so that if he wanted to wear it trick or treating he could wear a thick jacket underneath it.

To say he was excited would be a major understatement. He ran into the house, ripped it open and never took that costume off for hours. He kept pointing to the picture of the boy on the package and saying "thats me!" It will be a great dress up costume and he was thrilled so I was too!
Next time I need a costume for anything I am going to order the cool Egyptian costumes for my and my husband. I like having a cool costume on hand so I want to add these to my collection.

Play Room Under The Stairs

Play Room Storage

A lot of things I find hard about living with children is how to organize the things that keep them entertained. Yes, their toys. I love having a play room, but I don't want it to look like a toy cemetery. Here are some cute ideas for storage. I will also be posting ideas for creative / extreme play rooms as well as space saving play rooms.

Store toys in baskets on the wall. Genius!

I want this ikea picture ledge next to my train table. I just am not sure any trains would actually make it there, they are played with All. The. Time.

I love that there are large paper clips to hold up art as well as hooks to have the dress up costumes out in the open. For kids who dress up all the time this is a great idea.

How do you keep your kids room organized? Mine doesn't look anywhere near any of this, but I am working on it.

Giving Your Kids Everything - My Rant

What is wrong with kids these days? Okay not kids but younger adults. I admit, I am one of them. It seems we are cursed with the "I Want It All, And I Want It NOW" syndrome. I think our parents were cursed with the "I Want To Achieve More Than My Parents" syndrome and worked their butts off to create a life for themselves. Their children (us) grew up with the luxuries of their parents work and have come to expect it. What happens when these children grow up and have lives of their own? They still expect to have the nicest of everything and everything handed to them on a plate.

I have a few friends whose parents were able to help them out by giving them a down payment on a house. Another friend told his parents that because they couldn't afford to give them a down payment that they should live rent free in their house until they saved up an equal amount. I am sorry, but what is wrong with renting for a few years and saving without someone giving it to you? By all means, I would take the gift if given to me, but I wouldn't demand it or throw a tantrum so my mommy would give it to me.

Married children living completely off their parents and not working. WHAT THE FREAK PEOPLE. Be Responsible. Do we not know how to work? How to go without? I am sorry but you can wait a few months to get that new iPad without putting it on a credit card. Or drive that car another year so you don't have to make payments on a new one. Just because your parents could afford to give you those things as a teenager doesn't mean that you are entitled to them now. Just because you grew up in a nice home doesn't mean you have to have the nicest, largest home right out of college. Your parents spend 30+ years earning those achievements. They don't need to earn YOURS as well.

Now I can't be on my soap box completely, my parents paid for my college education. However, I also had scholarships that gave me extra income as well as tutored for my department on campus making a measly $5.25 an hour. And I was grateful to have the job. My $100 biweekly paycheck was our spending money as a newly married couple. We paid for all of our expenses and had more disposable income then than we do now.

I want all of my kids to work at construction jobs and as servers in a restaurant to learn the value of work. You have to start at the bottom and work your way up. I can't believe the people that expect to become a manager right away with no experience. ENTITLED. They feel entitled.

Pi Day 2012

March 14th or for us math nerds, Pi Day.

Anyone who grew up in Calgary going to the YSA dances knows about a dear unique friend named Dale.
Dale has an excellent memory and has a list of people. Their name, address, phone number, birthday and email. When you first meet him he will ask you if he can put you on 'The List'. From then on every time he sees you he will announce to you all of your details. We get emails on our birthdays (without facebook having to remind him) as well as unique days. I got a Happy 10,000 day old email about a year ago as well as a 7,777 day old email about 7 years ago.

A famous folk tale told around Calgary is about Dale's Pi Party. On March 14th he has a party for pi. You know, 3.14. In order to attend the party you must memorize the first 25 digits of pi and recite it to Dale either before the party or at the door. We eat Pie (the fruit kind) and for those who are not able to recite the 25 digits have to sit in 'Pie-gatory'. An empty room with nothing but a poster with the digits of pie on it.

I have heard about this person and these party's for years, but after my first year of college I was home in March and was able to attend the event. I must say it sure lived up to its hype. If anyone is interested, I could even share his anecdote on how to remember the digits!

Kids Rooms - Inspiration

This kids room was featured in this month's Rue magazine. It caught my eye because I had curtains just like this in my room growing up, only they were dusty rose with flowers all over them. Perfect to go with my floral on floral wallpaper with a floral border. These are cute, and better yet, my mom knows just how to make them! I think its time for a comeback.

Genius Storage Idea

When I first saw this on pinterest I thought it looked really cool but I didn't like that it wouldn't look cute when it folded up.

Then I was smart and went to the original source and saw this! It looks so adorable on the wall. Andrea even added vinyl for that extra touch making it look like a framed print when folded up. I love this idea especially for the storage on the wall frame when the table is folded down. GENIUS.

Well, I am kind of shocked to see that this post would get so much attention. I just thought that I would clear a few things up for some of the people who have read this and been offended.

I DID NOT WRITE THIS POST.

As I started at the very beginning of the post, my friend wrote it. The intent wasn't to offend the person who lives in this space. The intent and reason I shared was to share the real purpose of an interior designer. You see, a lot of people don't know the difference between 'design' and 'decorate' but I will save that rant of MINE for another day. I just liked the fact mentioned that, and I will re-quote:

It makes a great image, but it doesn’t portray the real intent of careful, thoughtful interior design; to marry function and aesthetics in the most effective manner possible for the specific user(s), making their time within the space easier and more enjoyable.
I know this is going to come off harshly, but there is a reason interior designers go to college, and one of them is to actually design spaces where someone thinks about potential issues like chalk dust in your bed, getting tracked throughout the house, etc What is actually going to end up on that “wall of possibilities”? Most likely a to-do list.

This is not a chalk board wall. This is a wall painted dark grey. If you would have looked at the picture for as much time as it took you to read back and find it, you would see that that is not chalk. Its a home made coat hanger. It is also available from the mom who happens to sell it here.

However, I admire that you follow and read enough to remember that I posted something so similar. Like my friend stated in her blog, the look is beautiful.

A Designers (True) Rant

This was posted on my friends blog (who I am not linking to because she wants her privacy, but know that I am giving her credit where credit is due). It was too true NOT to share.

I’m BEYOND over all these wanna-be design aficionados posting TERRIBLE design like that shown in the image above. Such images suck you in with trendy accessories and cheerful elements, see the child on the bed looking whimsically adorable in her mini-UrbanOutfitters getup?, but all they really scream to me is BAD, BAD design.

Who really wants a chalkboard above your bed? Did anyone think about chalk dust on your face while you sleep, or worse, chalk dust on your sheets, staining them?? Also, what if you aren’t that great at drawing or doodling? What is actually going to end up on that “wall of possibilities”? Most likely a to-do list. Yep, a to-do list, looming over you while you should be forgetting about responsibilities in lieu of some quality shut-eye. The only exception where I would enjoy seeing a to-do list over someone’s bed is if it had sex listed as an item for fulfilling. Just being honest, but I’d laugh!

Bottom line: the ~~designers~~ home-renovation blog addicts/DIYers of this room hopped on the trend train with the chalkboard paint; stripped all of their actual habits, preferences, and references to their life from the space; swooped into Ikea and bought a bedding set right off a bed and returned home to photograph the space with their digital SLR that they learned how to use off of another blog. It makes a great image, but it doesn’t portray the real intent of careful, thoughtful interior design; to marry function and aesthetics in the most effective manner possible for the specific user(s), making their time within the space easier and more enjoyable.

I know this is going to come off harshly, but there is a reason interior designers go to college, and one of them is to actually design spaces where someone thinks about potential issues like chalk dust in your bed, getting tracked throughout the house, etc. I am promptly unsubscribing to all of the “Architecture/Design” Tumblrs that I currently follow. They only make me angry.

Mommy Guilt?

I have read a few posts lately on some blogs (first phrase out of mouth about 20x a day- Blogs are my social life right now) when I realized there were some that really hit home to where I am RIGHT NOW.

The no sleep, tired of no sleep but started to get used to it phase. I love babies, but I love them exponentially more with each hour of consecutive sleep that they get.

My Favorite Things

I was a lucky recipient of an invitation in the mail. The real mail. How often does that happen these days?
It was a Girls Night In. A Favorite Things Party hosted by my real life and blog life friend Mrs. M.
We were invited and asked to bring a guest, which I loved because everyone knew SOMEONE but not EVERYONE. We also brought an appetizer or dessert to share. I brought 7 Layer Dip in a Cup inspired from this PIN.

I had to laugh when I walked in and saw this cute box for our cellphones. After THIS post I was happy that she did have the box so we could all be present in the moment. After taking a few pictures my phone went right into the box.

Mrs. M had swag bags with some treats inside and our names labelled on the outside for everyone.

For those of you who haven’t seen this on the internets (pinterest and blogs) I will explain the Favorite Things Party.
In this case 16 girls were in attendance. We each brought a quantity of 5 of our personal favorite thing. We each explained why that was our favorite things then drew names for who got to take that item home.
My favorite item? Dry Shampoo. I have used the Tres Emme and Suave and love BOTH so much better than the super expensive bumble and bumble.
Other peoples favorite items included:
Diet Pepsi (silly girl, it should be Diet Coke!)

In other shocking news, I have since tracked down a few of the girls blogs and I am starting to feel the shock of 6 degrees of seperation. I am amazed at how many people I have never met before have 12+ friends in common with me on facebook. Its funny how we are all friends of a friend of a friend. One person having a party introduced us all to each other! LOVE IT.

I love this kitchen’s cabinet layout. Different without being trendy. A perfect combination of modern and classic. I could see the two toned being in many different color combinations.
