1- 007 Skyfall premieres this Thursday
Skyfall is the upcoming twenty-third spy film in the James Bond series, It features Daniel Craig’s third performance as James Bond, and Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva, the film’s villain. The film was directed by Sam Mendes and written by John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. Plots goes as Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

You can watch the movie in all cinemas across Qatar starting Thursday the 25th.

“Stop telling people you run this company, you’re nothing but a business developer here. I even heard you tell people you run this company and this is not. I own this and you don’t”

These words were what I heard, before deciding to take all chances and accept all the offers I’ve been rejecting, resisting and fighting to stay in Amman, Jordan. This is when I lost faith. The day this happened was my collapse day to two of my dear friends, that I interviewed, hired and did my best to give the best job offer they deserve.

I accepted an internship with a very big social networking site, an offer in Kuwait, another in UAE and decided to settle for the last in Qatar. Yes.

Why?

Because the company I co-founded and started, is not mine anymore. I never had a penny to spend in making it mine. I started this company when I no longer had my job at one of the best social media agencies in the region, because of many reasons that finishing my B.A. was part of, other things such as incompatibility… I still love that company till this day.

The day I left It I was contacted by a person that seemed to be one of the brightest ones. I started a company with him right away, at some point I was filling 5 titles for the price of one and I never complained while being a digital strategist, client servicing, HR, creative director and content manager.

I managed to create the best social media agency in town as I call it, in no time. Whenever that agency’s name is mentioned, my name was too. I did it, It was all my effort. I worked all weekends, all day, all night & all this other person’s duty was to pay the salaries. He was the investor. And, at the end… If I send a business proposal with a typo, I was treated as If I burned a Quran or had a relation with nun, yes.

So, bright people of Jordan. Do it with your own money or you’ll leave without a penny like my story. No compensation (I even had a laptop on payments, which had a year payments left that were deducted from my last month’s salary). Not a single penny, no written contract, nothing.

Although I’ve produced most of the business pitches for all existing clients on my own. As one person, doing it all because If I don’t, no one else would. Except for this very bright person I managed to hire, and was tracking for a whole year. God bless her and her efforts in this crazy business happening now.

Thank god I’m in a way better place now, where I’ve been doing one job for the past 2 months, and also get paid well for it while being treated like a human being.

I got the US 16GB Black version for 4,300 QR (1,180 USD$) which costs (199$ for the device + 700$ to unlock officially) so I technically paid an extra 250 USD$ for it. which is okay, considering the bad Aramex service in Qatar, the high cost of Borderlinx and the time to ship it from the UK since Apple needs 3-4 to dispatch. So yeah, all in all I’m satisfied. I went to the Qtel branch right after and had my Nano SIM activated and I’m ready to go.

Let me start with the first thing I noticed, IT IS LIGHT! The new iPhone 5 feels lighter than my iPhone 4s even though it’s taller and technically has bigger specs. It looks elegant, slim & shiny while my lovely iPhone 4s felt old the moment I touched the iPhone 5. You know, it is like when you have a child, and then a new born. I could be exaggerating a bit here. I have the black iPhone, where the sides are black too and not metal like the 4s, which helped make it look smaller.

It is just too sad that I won’t be able to have 4G on it in Qatar, since this is the American model. However, I hope they find a solution for this, like a software or something.

Till then, I’m enjoying the best iPhone ever made.

I woke up, left my phones on chargers and headed to the pool.

My friends showed up, we had fun and a nice breakfast over the pool.

I went back to my hotel room, my friends joined over, we played cards & watched a nice movie on TV.

I started itching all over, I want to check my Facebook & Twitter. I slept.

I had to use my phone, I’m sorry. Took a shower after I woke up and resisted checking the phone

7:00 pm
I used my mobiles, laptop and internet. I couldn’t resist.

So, I at least did it for 12 hours. I’m proud.

Iraq iPhone has a nice image of an iPhone as their header image, that reflects the brand properly.

I have to say that its a beautiful device, with a quad-core processor powered device with a big screen. The Question is: Is it enough to beat Apple’s iPhone 4S into submission?

Let’s just agree that Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is an important product: Smartphones now outsell PCs, it’s entirely likely that the S3, will be the computer acquired by more people than any other in the next six months. More than HP or Dell.

The S3 has gone big on innovation, with lots of new features the speculation hadn’t dreamed of. But the first thing you notice is the size. I honestly think it is not a phone, but more of a new breed of device somewhere between a phone and a tablet.

I honestly loved using it, the only thing I hate was probably the plastic-feeling back cover, besides this… it was a great phone, here are some bullets of some pros and cons I found out:

Pros:
- A big screen, not too big to carry neither standard, perfect size.
- Quad-core processor with smooth graphics.
- 60 GB Dropbox for year! HELL YEAH.
- Great battery performance/backup feature.
- Snaps photos while recording FullHD video
- Video recording at 1080p HD / 30fps.
- Great audio quality
- Super slim compared to many phones like iPhone for example.

Cons:
- Plastic body.
- No camera key.
- S Voice is as bad as Siri.

Startup Weekend Amman
Startup Weekend is a not-for-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington, USA, that organizes 54-hour weekend events during which groups of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more pitch ideas for new startup companies, form teams around those ideas, and work to develop a working prototype, demo, and/or presentation by Sunday evening. Startup Weekend has grown into an organization with a global presence. As of June 2012, 468 events were held in over 90 countries.

I had the honour of making the Arabic logo for the Amman, Jordan event this year using the same font, but in Arabic letters instead.

Instagram
Instagram is a free photo-sharing program and social network that was launched in October 2010. The service allows users to take a photo, apply a digital filter to it, and then share it with other Instagram users they are connected to on the social network as well as on a variety of social networking services. Instagram currently has 80 million registered users. A distinctive feature is that it confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images, in contrast to the 4:3 aspect ratio typically used by mobile device cameras.

I did this for fun during a design session earlier this month, I hope you like it as well.

Beat FM 102.5 is a radio station located in Amman, Jordan. The station is owned by Seagulls Broadcast and was established in 2005.

Deadmau5
Joel Thomas Zimmerman (born January 5, 1981), better known by his stage name deadmau5 (pronounced “dead mouse”), is a Canadian electro-house music producer, DJ, and performer based in Toronto. Deadmau5 produces a variety of styles with the house genre, or other forms of electronic dance music. His tracks have been included in compilation albums such as In Search of Sunrise 6: Ibiza, MixMag’s Tech-Trance-Electro-Madness (mixed by deadmau5 himself), and on Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance radio show. Pinterest
Pinterest is a pinboard-style social photo sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, hobbies, and more. Users can browse other pinboards for inspiration, ‘re-pin’ images to their own collections or ‘like’ photos. Pinterest’s mission is to “connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting” via a global platform of inspiration and idea sharing. Founded by Ben Silbermann, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp the site is managed by Cold Brew Labs and funded by a small group of entrepreneurs and inventors. It is one of the “fastest growing social services in the world.”

To give you a quick update and not take long; Umniah recently introduced their 3.75G service, late I know but stable and well performing and also launched fun.umniah.com which is the first entertaining portal in Jordan, providing exclusive content and applications as well, such as games, music and video. To cater to this target, Umniah decided to invite bloggers, tweeps and social media fanatics, to attend the premiere of the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises one night before the official release date in the MENA region, inviting everyone to enjoy 2 tickets, popcorn & soda on their behalf to enjoy the movie.

Not only that, but also invited PBYRC and other NGOs to watch & enjoy the movie with everyone. This was a great idea by the online team at Umniah, special thanks to Noor Kalouti & Khalil Khattari for this great effort.

Umniah launched the first fun portal in Jordan, and was the first to invite people to have fun at cinema, First cinema tweetup in the region and such a great idea. I really see why people switch to Umniah now.

1. It doesn’t work!

Countries who tried to block sites failed and failed miserably! It costs millions and simply doesn’t work! There are VPNs, proxies and other means to beat imposed blocks so why even try it to start with? The Internet is like a tidal wave and if you attempt to get in the way you will be swept aside if not buried alive! In addition, very often harmless sites get blocked because they may contain words that are deemed offensive, (such as women’s health sites when they refer to “breast” cancer for example). Basically we will end up with a complete mess on our hands!

2. There are laws in place already!

There is a cybercrime law in Jordan that specifically addresses the issue of promoting pornography to minors with stiff penalties and jail terms! And this is the real threat here and it already has been addressed. So why complicate matters now?

3. Where do we draw the line?

First it starts with porn and then it could evolve to other sites or issues that are deemed offensive! We are opening a pandora’s box here that will be impossible to close. And if we block sites do we want to block email that contains adult images and videos? Or block satellite TV that contains nudity? Where do we draw the line here?

4. The government is NOT our baby sitter!

Parents should be concerned with their kids welfare and what they do on the web and not the government! This is George Orwell’s Big Brother in its ugliest form! And while we are at it, why stop at porn? Why not let the government block Sony Playstation and Nintendo because our kids are playing games for hours or even Facebook because it distracts them from their studies! Is this what we really want? The government to act as our baby sitter? The only control that works is parental control, and mothers and fathers need to be aware what their kids are doing at all times, whether online or offline. If anything, we should invest in educating parents since the fear of the unknown is what we need to collectively fight. Instead of wasting millions on futile attempts to censor and block sites why not invest the same amount to train and educate parents so they can make more educated and intelligent decisions?

5. Control should be at the user level!

The Internet should be free and untouched and those who want clean and filtered Internet can request it from their service provider, (and accordingly pay for the service), or download one of the hundred apps, (free otherwise), that already exist to block porn.

6. It infringes on freedoms!

In the age of openness and in the midst of the Arab Spring, do we really want governments to infringe on our freedoms?! If a certain mature individual opts to download porn in their own private setting well it is their prerogative, and no one has the right to interfere here! Pure and simple!

7. It damages our IT industry!

Jordan’s IT industry, which has become a real success story with Amman often labeled as the Silicon Valley of the Middle East, was built on the premise that the Internet is open and without restrictions. Government intervention will send the worst possible message to investors and major companies who chose Jordan as their hub and will scare away potential new players. And in these tough economic times we really can’t afford to inflict damage on one of Jordan’s few bright spots and major source of high end employment!

8. It is a black eye for Jordan at the worst time possible!

In the midst of a region of control freaks and enemies of the web, Jordan has been the shining example of openness and freedom, resulting in many investments that enabled us to build our flourishing industry. And now almost 20 years later, and after serving as a model for the rest of the Middle East, we want to go back in time to the dark ages and put our heads in the sand, and at the worst possible time ever! This is what is often referred to as a self inflicted wound! For these reasons, I am 100% against this latest stunt, and for these reasons I chose to speak up! We have many other issues of major concern that require our attention and focus. Let us keep the Internet open and free and maintain Jordan’s position as a vanguard in the IT industry and protect our image as a country of openness and tolerance.

Now, the Social Media scandal Joseph Chacra & Sons did is hire a nonprofessional to handle their social media presence, and started banning the users who are asking for the Batman movie, then to solve this issue after we made a petition, I made a video and created a hype online with friends from the region. All Josepg Chacra & Sonds did was asking fans to move to a new page.

Seriously? instead of solving the issue you’re banning the users or disabling them from commenting then creating a new page to get rid of the negative posts? That is your crisis management strategy?

What’s funny is that also today, they’re claiming that this existing page has nothing to do with this… strange! I’m wondering who has to do with this now.

The real story here; Joseph Chacra & Sons have been delaying many movies and not only Batman, anything that doesn’t keep up with their pockets, doesn’t go early. Take these movies for example:

1- “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” was released in our cinemas on March 15th while the international DVD/Blu-ray release date was March 27th (12 days after the MENA release) which is too late.

2- “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” was released on christmas worldwide, but on March 8th in MENA. One month AFTER the DVD/Blu-ray release on February 7th.

3- “J. Edgar” was released in the MENA on March 1st, while the international release was on November 11th, and the DVD/Blu-ray release was on February 21st, they put it in cinemas 9 days after that.

The Dark Knight Rises is one of the most, if not the most anticipated movie release for 2012. It has been decided by you, that the audience of the Middle East will be denied seeing the film until August 16, when Ramadan has ended. While many may wait to see the film after the Holy Month has finished, there are an equal proportion of Batman fans, if not more, who would hit the cinema for a July 20 release. We are those fans, and here is our argument.

Batman: The Dark Knight grossed USD 2.8 million in the UAE when it was released in 2008 and is one of the Middle East’s all-time top 10 grossing films. For fans who have been tremendously dedicated to this franchise from Batman Begins, it is ridiculous that we should have to wait an entire month for what could become one of the Middle East’s favourite movies of all time.

Going to the cinema is a collective experience and this is not limited to the people in the cinema with you. With any highly anticipated release, there is a global fervour and excitement that is truly a wonderful thing to be a part of. Citizens of the Middle East will be counting down just like the rest of the world and by the time it comes to D-Day in this part of the world, it will be yesterday’s news, the spoilers will be unavoidable and pirated versions of the movie will have popped up all over the internet.

We want to be a part of The Dark Knight Rises in real time. We want to be able to talk about it with our friends from all over the world. We want to join the conversation and the celebration assertively. This is the end of an era, let us celebrate it with the rest of the world.
