Yeah, the availability of tools on the internet makes it so easy for common people like me to create a small data entry app so quickly without doing a single line of code. Take a look at the picture and tell me if I am wrong
I had written a post about Vertica last year, the column store database. I was reading an article about high performance data warehousing today and found few more facts about Vertica.

All of us may know that it uses highly parallel and shared nothing architecture just like Teradata. The difference is that Vertica stores the data by columns which means that it accesses only the columns that are required. A row based system would need to access the complete record regardless of the nature of query. Doesn't that ring a bell when we think of star schemas? I have come across facts and dimensions which had few hundred columns. That's definitely going to increase the performance!

We talked about column store. Now let's talk about the next weapon from Vertica. Compression - the data is compressed before it is stored in the disk. So it consumes much lesser space compared to the other databases. What's the big deal! The hard disks are cheaper these days. True that hard disks are cheaper but it's not always about the disk size that we can afford. It is also about transmitting the data back and forth from the memory to the disk which is indeed a big bottleneck. The processors are becoming cheaper. Henceforth compressing and decompressing the data in memory compared to transmitting large decompressed data is a better option. Think about those columns which has so many null values and white spaces.

It's not all. Vertica has one more weapon which takes the battle to top notch. Processing on compressed data - Vertica do not decompress the data after reading it from the disk, it does all the processing using the compressed data. It only decompresses it when the data has to be delivered to the end user. This is terrific as the amount of data that Vertica needs to handle becomes lesser and lesser.

Given all these facts, where does it leave us with traditional ETL techniques? Is ETL the right technique while using Vertica? I don't think so. ELT must be the best method given all the processing power of Vertica. What I don't know is that if Vertica has got extensive and robust API to work with data in compressed format. If Vertica has got the robust API, I would recommend to use the data integration tool to just transport data from source to target. The transformation, integration, cleansing, conforming, de-depulication and aggregation are better done within Vertica than outside the Vertica's ecosystem.

I am talking about the All New Hyundai Verna (ANHV) that got launched today in India. Read this for the details and this for test drive report.

Ford India and Hyundai India were playing "wait &

watch" for more than few weeks to launch their flagship products Fiesta and Verna. Fiesta went ahead with a launch two weeks back just show casing their product. I read somewhere that Ford didn't even allow anyone to look at the engine. So it was just an official peep show which also announced about features which are first-time for the segment such as cruise control. Hyundai too did the same with their Hyundia Fluidic advertisements but it was too minimal.

The picture below shows the side views of these two new cars. I feel that Verna looks more radical than Fiesta.

It all got over today. Hyundai dared Ford with the official launch and I would say that it has got the widest range of options possible. So if you have a budget of anywhere from 8 lacs to 12 lacs OTR price, you would be able to find one Verna. I hope Ford does their launch sooner than any later to miss out on a good number of customers.

All that have been said, my take on these two cars based on the reviews I have read

Verna - As always a smoother, bigger and a good looking car. Not an exciting car though.

Fiesta - Last generation Fiesta a.k.a Fiesta Classic is still one of the best driver's car and the new Fiesta will be no different. With some exciting features like Cruise control, it would be more of fun than the sober Verna.

BTW the title of the post is just mentioning about the design cues that each of the products are based on. Ford calls it design Kinetic while Hyundai calls it Fluidic.

It was announced few weeks back but wasn't available immediately for all the countries.

Sony did a phased release of the upgrade to avoid I guess chaos. I did try to upgrade every day from the day of the announcement but in vain. The message was clear that a notification message will be received on the phone to start the upgrade. So it did come on a wednesday morning 6 AM. I couldn't wait and did upgrade immediately.

The biggest trouble was that I lost all my contacts. I had used the backup and restore app and I did have two copies of all my contacts and apps backed up. The applications got restored but the contacts got restored partially. I couldn't figure out the reason, I did raise a ticket with Sony but they couldn't help me either.

I also had the Sony's syncup for synchronizing the contacts. I tried to restore them by syncing from their website but it didn't seem to work. I tried syncing multiple times. But it finally worked out the next day with out trying anything. I guess the sync took it's own time to import all the contacts.

So how does Eclair fare? The biggest difference I experience are the battery performance and faster UI. It is a free app. It allows you to setup multiple accounts. That would be good for avid bloggers. Setting up the account itself was very simple.

The UI is very neat and tidy. There are options to format text, add image,a video and link. It looks Ok on my SE X10 mini pro's small screen. I guess it will look cool in X10 or Galaxy.

Already found a problem with this app. While editing the post using hard keyboard on my phone, it doesn't let me scroll up at all. It's damn good app for free though.

I got so frustrated when I looked at the drafts. It has saved so many copies of this post. If I can't find a fix for this, it's not going to be easy to use this app.

Posted via Blogaway

I was in a training today which took us through Vertica, the column store MPP-based analytics database. Having been worked in a MPP database, many other data integration and information delivery tools, it was interesting and fun to learn something different. There are certain things which I really liked are

- They have kept the SQL to comply to ANSI-99 which is a good thing as the application developers and power users have little to learn

- The concept of making tables as logical is cool as the underlying mechanism of storage (projections) can be reorganized/changed/modified without the end user ever knowing

- The ability of the database engine to do all the processes in the compressed/encoded format and push the uncompress process to the end. What does this mean is that it tries to work with as less volume of data as possible. That's cool.

- WOS (Write Optimized Store) which enables the trickle feed to be written to the memory instead of the disk. I have heard about using in-memory solution for reading but it's my first to hear about using in-memory for writing and I really felt that it would help in real time analytics.

- New nodes can be added without bringing the database down. This is good as the data growth in this era of infomration is exponential and being able to add a node online is critical.

I will be very excited to get an opportunity to work on this database.

Update -

Few more things that I missed to write about,

- Native High Availability - I am not sure if any other MPP databases has such a concept. With proven compressing ratio of 1:8 for Telco companies, I guess the customers won't mind having native high availability turned on for the critical facts. The native high availability is achieved by replicating the projection data in different segments/nodes. Even if a node goes down, the data is still available in some another node.

- Load balancing - the database engine across all the nodes are load balanced by a Vertica process running on each node. But what is missing is the application connection level load balancing. Vertica off the shelf installed on n nodes let the end user connect to any of the node but it doesn't give you a single point of entry. If a customer wants to give a single point of entry, I guess they either need to use a hardware router or an external application to load balance the connection requests.

Disclaimer : The views expressed here are purely personal based on a training I attended. It is not validated by Vertica or anyone else. You may want to discuss with Vertica support if you would like to explore further on anything that is written above.

I am conservative in spending on gadgets, comparing with same segment of people like me. Especially I don't go out and spend whenever there is a new gadget out with a new technology. So losing the phone was a good excuse to buy a better phone. But I was confused with too many options with a budget of INR 15,000.

My budget was around - 15,000 INR. iPhone, Motorola Milestone and HTC HD,Hero,Xperia X10 all were out!

I wanted a compact touch screen phone - Almost all Nokia phones were ruled out due to the size factor!

I wanted an Android phone - Samsung Jet was out

Finally had a choice of Samsung I7500 Galaxy, I5700 Spica and HTC Tattoo on the radar. When I had gone to the shop, I could not find I5700 Spica and the salesperson discouraged me from buying I7500 as there were too many complaints and many consumers have returned the phone back. I didn't personally like HTC Tattoo and I was left out with no choice again.

So I decided to buy a stop-gap phone and bought Samsung Metro which was just INR 4,000. I was using it for 3-4 months and was very unhappy especially with the voice clarity.

Last week I came across this phone Sony Xperia X10 mini pro and I was quite impressed with it's specifications,

Android 1.6

600 MHz processor

5 MP Camera with LED Flash

3G, Wi-Fi

Touch & QWERTY

Timescape included

Very compact

I didn't want to think too much this time as I easily get confused with the options. So visited the shop on Sunday and bought it in less than an hour.

I am still searching for a good pouch and scratch resistance screen for my Xperia X10 mini pro before I start using it full time. I tried out accessing GMail and Facebook through the phone and it was fast and I could read the emails and messages without difficulty.

Hope I would find more time to explore the phone in the coming weeks!

But the world is moving towards Web Intelligence as it avoids all administrative work to be done on the client machines. You still get the power of offline analysis using Web Intelligence Rich Client (XI 3.1 and above).

I think I am not coming to the point; In Web Intelligence one cannot hide a column in a table. Why would one want to hide a column while it does not need to be displayed? One simple answer that I can think of is SORTing. To sort a table on a particular object, the particular object must be part of the table as a column.

So the feature of hiding a column is not supported in web intelligence as of XI 3.1 SP2. But as always there is a work around to render this function. There could be more work arounds to achieve the same but I want to share the one that I know.

Let us say that you have Obj 1, Obj 2, Obj 3, Obj 4 & Obj 5 available in a data provider and you want to display only Obj 1, Obj 2 & Obj 5 in a table and sort the table based on Obj 4.

Step 1 - Create a table with Obj 1, Obj 2 & Obj 4. Note that I am including only three columns as needed to be diaplyed but excluding Obj 5 and adding Obj 4 instead.

Step 2 - Apply sort on Obj 4

Step 3 - Now comes the twist - Create an alerter on Obj 4 with a condition that would always succeed (like 1=1). In the alerter definition, you would have an option to specify what needs to be diaplyed upon success of the expression. In this case, make the object to be displayed as Obj 5

Step 4 - You would see the table with the Obj 1, Obj 2 & Obj 5 and it is also sorted on Obj 4

We’re done. Isn’t that cool?

Every year I take some resolutions and I always go away from keeping up to those. Thus I have decided not to take any resolutions that are unrealistic.

I am on a project which keeps me away from connecting to the internet most of the time. Also facebook, twitter and personal life priorities keeping me away from writing my experiences.

With my little son, this whole year is going to be exciting and demanding. I have realized lot more about my abilities and my interests at work. Will try to read one book every month this year. Will try to blog my experiences at work.

It is the starting point and prior to XI 3x release, they were very minimalistic in feature.

I was asked for a default value option for so many years and also about leaving one of the prompts as optional. Finally SAP BusinessObjects has delivered these two simple but most wanted features. Take a look at the image. You can do both these things when you define the prompts in the Query Panel.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 326px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Gp8L9Zx54YM/SmA87PgBSpI/AAAAAAAABgA/zfequLInmmU/s400/Prompt+Properties.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359350545041672850" />

But cascading prompts is not available yet. It was 6:00 in the morning and the station was so crowded. The train came at around 6:20, my folks got in and the train started leaving the station in another 2 mins.

When I was walking back to my car on the platform, I saw people waving their hands and shouting to stop the train. What the heck? Then I saw an old lay who just missed to get into the train and people (strangers) were trying to help her. When the train guard in the last coach saw these people shouting and waving their hands to stop the train, SMILED and communicated over radio to his co-worker in the front of the train to stop the train. I saw smiles on almost everyone who were waiting for other trains.

What touched me was - the willingness of people to help a person whom they are not connected with. These kind of willingness to help was very common in the place where I grew up but it has slowly started to subside these days. The fast paced life, running behind the monetary benefits, greediness, etc made us to become more ego-centric.

It takes a little to help but the satisfaction and gratitude goes a long way!

The book's detailed caption says it all - "140-bite sized lessons for fast paced world".

I got to read the book. I always get impressed by the ideas and simple thoughts of the author. But an idea about reaching to the world with his ideas using twitter style is terrific. It hardly took 30 mins - 1 hour to read the complete book. As usual his wise thoughts about personal life, business, networking are simple and powerful.

Extras:
The author is well known for his ideas for better life. Thanks to Rajesh Setty who has given me an opportunity to announce about his new book to the world. I have been following his blog for more than a year and I love his writing.

He has decided to make use of the blogs as one of the marketing medium for his recent book Upbeat and requested for volunteers on his site. I was one of the luckier people to get a chance to announce about the book to the world. And Rajesh has not asked for a free service; he has some goodies as gifts for taking part in the Virtual Blog Tour. Thus I am here to make an announcement about his book,
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 269px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Gp8L9Zx54YM/Skmu2KKFm8I/AAAAAAAABEA/MEeqWsq9z78/s400/upbeat-cover-final.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353001877569379266" />
Author Bio:
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Gp8L9Zx54YM/SkmuqWA1_LI/AAAAAAAABD4/HccEx8RpvWs/s320/rajesh-for-website.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353001674593402034" />Rajesh’s mission in life is to bring good ideas to life. With love!
Rajesh is involved in a few companies in some combination as a founder, operating executive, board member and/or an investor. Apart from that, he has written a few books and is working on a number of them. His first book was published at the age of thirteen. While he is not building companies or writing, he enjoys speaking at conferences and company events.
You can read his latest thoughts on his blog Life Beyond Code or on Twitter at UpbeatNow. If you are really curious to know the events that shaped his thinking, you can read his story so far here.
Rajesh lives in the Silicon Valley with his wife Kavitha and son Sumukh

But few things that I wish BusinessObjects can bring in are

- The consistency across the different reporting panels for webintelligence
- Reusable components for webintelligence. Like data provider reuse or report reuse.
- Consolidate the number of information delivery tools to two or three.
- The long term wish would be to have one information delivery tool which could be catered to all types of information delivery needs. Like the application should be able to adapt and metamorph it’s interface based on the user :-)

He has attributed his success to his learning on respecting the bowlers. It is a very simple thought but when you give it a thought, it can be applied in every day aspect of life to make it better.

When you start respecting your rivals,
- you start evaluating their strengths and weaknesses
- you start working on improving your weaknesses to overcome their strengths
- you acknowledge the strengths of your rivals which makes the competition healthier
- you accept your losses as the result of your weaknesses and the strengths of your rivals. Thus you mature and become more composed.
- you don't succumb to the losses in life

And respecting not only rivals, but everyone whether it is a junior at office or a servant at home will make us better people. Respect and equality goes hand-on-hand and brings peace and healthy relationships in life.

But since most of our projects run on XI R2, I did not explore much on XI R3.1. Recently I got a trial version of SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1 installed.

Ok, let us jump to what I wanted to write about. XI 3.1 webintelligence has added 3 new predefined cells to be used in reports.

1) Query Summary
2) Prompt Summary
3) Report Filter Summary

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Gp8L9Zx54YM/SkCdQIdtJeI/AAAAAAAAA7E/3utgSDreHm4/s320/New+cells.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350449257791694306" />

We were able to achieve the same thing by writing some cumbersome formulas. But adding these as a simple drag and drop option is a cool thing. It helps much more in promoting the tool as "casual user friendly" tool. But I have decided to write posts related to my work for two reasons,

1) Will help me to write more as I come across so many things that are interesting to write about.

2) May be, sometime in the future, I may get noticed as a technology blogger than a personal blogger. But what I realized over a period of time is something different - it makes me feel proud and stand alone from others and gives me an identity in the cyber world.

I have never seriously thought of getting more traffic to my blog. But eventually I won few regular readers to my site. But I really did not make it a point to post regularly to keep them visiting my blog on a regular basis. Like my life the theme of the blog was never focused on one thing, it was about everything that I watch, read & like.

Setting goals and achieving them has never been the style of my life. I regret for not having done that all my life. But again I never spend much time to think and worry about the past. I take life as it comes; I think that is good to lead a happier life but achieving goals would make me feel more proud and also would make me search for my passion of my life.

I have so many random thoughts that flash across my mind every now and then. I think I can write these thoughts and read them later to understand the pattern of my thought process.

Fiat India has surprised the Indian automobile market by tagging it with ex-showroom price ranging between 399,000 INR and 600,000 INR.

If I think of cars available in Indian market at that range,

- Maruti Suzuki Swift (Petrol & Diesel)
- Tata Indica Vista (Petrol & Diesel)
- Hyundai i10 (Petrol)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 275px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Gp8L9Zx54YM/Sjs6gwCr_tI/AAAAAAAAA2s/TczTdWmaDLg/s400/fiat_grande_punto_101.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348933316758994642" />
But the Fiat Grande Punto is at par with Hyundai i20, Skoda Fabia & Honda Jazz by design, technical specifications & size. I have never been to a Tata Motors showroom to check out a fiat car. I still hear problems about after sales service for Fiat cars at Tata Motors service centers.

Honda has just priced their car Honda Jazz (Petrol) for approximately more than 400,000 INR. That means one could buy two Grande Puntos at the price of one Honda Jazz. In fact one can buy a Fiat Linea Diesel for the same price of a Honda Jazz.

Honda Jazz is overpriced compared to Skoda Fabia and Hyundai i20. So how does Grande Punto fares with Fabia & i20? The base petrol version of Grande Punto is underpowered with 1.2 L engine and with max power of 68 bhp. The 1.4 L petrol version is on par with Fabia, i20 & Jazz in terms of max power - 90 bhp.

And the Fiat website does not provide the price details of 1.4 L separately. That's a little confusing too.

I believe the 1.4 L Grande Punto would cost almost same as i20 & Fabia Petrol. The coming days would reveal more about the pricing and also about the response for this machine in Indian market.

Dhoni made a mistake of sending Jadeja ahead of Yuvraj Singh. But is that a mistake? If it had worked for Dhoni, he would have been hailed for bringing Jadeja for the crucial tie.

Dhoni accepted that he had made mistakes but I believe it was just not India's day. One stupid reporter from Times Now was shouting as if Dhoni has commited a crime. It more looked like the big fat ugly fella has some personal vengeance against Dhoni. As a sport lover, I understand winning and losing is part and parcel of sports, but looks like the reporter could not take the loss sportively.

As a reporter, he must be able to analyze things and must give benefit of doubts before start accusing anyone for Christ's sake. The chief at Times Now has to be blamed for his reporters being insensitive and conveying speculative news to the public.

Hereby I declare my 100% support for Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. I believe his commitment to the game is at par with any sports person I have ever come across.

JUST FOR LAUGHS!

Ravindu Jadeja - "I had wasted so many balls which helped England winning the match and worst, I had let my team down. Will I be kicked by the Indian fans?"

M.S.Dhoni - "Did I make a wrong decision of sending Jadeja ahead of Yuvi or myself? Once things like the batting order change always used to favor me. Am I running out of luck?"

Yuvraj Singh - "What if I had saved the four of the last ball of the England innings. We just lost by three runs. Anyway I can always blame that it was Dhoni's fault not to send me ahead of Jadeja. I could have won the match easily for India if I was sent up in the order to bat"

Harbhajan Singh - "Oh man, If I had not bowled that wide in the last ball of the England innings, we would have won this match. Hmmmm, anyway it was Yuvraj who missed the ball"

Rudra Pratap Singh - "Does Dhoni hate me? I did so well in T20 games for so long and he did not pick me for the earlier games. In this game I bowled impressively; but when I had an over left, Dhoni did not choose me to bowl in the death. I need to somehow pass this to the media; Should I start writing in a blog?"

Ok, finally my two cents on the match - India lost because they had opted to send in Jadeja earlier instead of Yuvraj Singh.

It may not take long before some B-school starts analyzing the robberies that are taking place in the country.

Today's highlight is the robbery of a jewelery shop by digging a tunnel into the shop from a drainage - in 3 hours gap and that too in the broad day light. These guys must have planned this for a long time, as they have tunneled to reach the exact spot that they wanted.

What could have been the inspiration for these guys? The Bank job movie or the Italian Job. The divide between the poor and rich is getting wider in India; With the population of over a billion; lot of them being poor; lot of urban migration; the crime rate in the urban places may go up.

BTW read about the robbery in detail here.

In fact almost every car maker in India has a showroom on Hosur Road. Jazz is priced at 7 lacs as starting price which is way too far from the current two competitors from the same segment - i20 and Fabia.

But Jazz offers some unique features when it comes to space inside the car; all the seats except the driver's seat can be positioned in different ways to accommodate different shapes of luggages. Also the fuel tank has gone under the front seats to make more room in the boot, 399 litres of boot space.

I think it's the brand name on Indian people minds is going to help Jazz win over i20 or Fabia.

Another competitor for these three cars to be launched in a week or so by Fiat. Grande Punto - looks similar to i20; I expect it to be priced competitively as the sibling Fiat Linea which is built on the same platform is priced very competitively. In fact Honda Jazz will have competition from few sedans as well due to it's high pricing.

My dad owns a Fiat Palio (2000) model and I just can't understand how Fiat lost to make their presence felt in India with such marvelous products.

I will try and test drive both Jazz and Grande Punto in the coming weeks.

I thought I would share my experience at Bangalore International Airport 3 weeks back when I came back from Sydney.

We were given an extra form apart from immigration form in the flight which asked for the personal information and details of any symptoms like fever, cold or body ache, etc. Also it asked if the person has visited Mexico, USA and few more countries (5 or 6 of them). And that's it.

And before immigration there were so called doctors were waiting on their desks to look at the screening form and approve it. I was not questioned at all. It was 11:45 PM and many of the passengers looked ill because of their long journey but none were questioned.

But is that all needed to screen people? I am not sure what kind of screening method is being used at other places. What if the passenger does not feel the symptoms before leaving the airport.

As we were discussing at today's teatime, the governance with 50% of democracy and 50% of enforcement may only help India to improve the quality of everything like service, infrastructure, education, basic amenities, etc.. But without proper leaders who are willing to do good for the country, it is not going to happen.
