width="710">

Andong is well known as the home of the Seonbi, Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. Indeed, Andong has so many cultural signs all around the city that it has been called 'the city of cultural assets.' There is Hahoe folk village that keep the look of an old village, and Dosanseowon, a stronghold of Sung Confucianism, and Talchum, a traditional Korean masque dance that satirized the upper class.

Hahoe Folk Village Keeps the Look of a Village in the Joseon Period

Hahoe Folk village in Andong has kept the look of a village from the Joseon period, and it was visited in April 1999 by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and her husband, Prince Philip who both heaped praises on it. It takes 30 minutes by car to get to Hahoe Folk village from the city of Andong. Once there Hwasan, a branch of the Taebaek Mountains on the east side greets the visitor, and Nakdong River surrounds the east, west, and south side of the village, which is skirted with beautiful scenery.

It could be confusing whether the village is a set for movies or a real village actually lived in today because of the appealing 300~500 year-old Giwa dotted here and there. The forest of old pine trees located on the northwest side and a 600-year old zelkova tree located at the center of the village are eye-catching sights. Across Nakdong River, Buyoungdae (a cliff) and pine trees make a beautiful scene - just like a Byeonpoong (a Korean traditional folding screen with beautiful pictures painted on it).

Hahoe Folk village was a clan town of the Yu's family from the time it became prosperous due to Yu Seong-ryoung and his brother Yu Un-ryoung. Yu Seong-ryoung (1542~1607) was a great master of Sung Confucianism, a disciple of Lee Hwang who built Dosanseowon as a Saaekseowon (a temple or a lecture hall where a King gave a signboard with his name on it as a Royal gift). He had helped General Lee Sun-sin to victory during the Imjin war -the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 - with his advanced knowledge of military affairs. There are still Yu families still in the town including Yu (Ryu) Si-won one of the promoters of the Hallyu (Korean Wave/culture boom overseas) who is the 14th descendant of Yu Seong-ryoung.

Dosanseowon, A stronghold of Sung Confucianism

Dosanseowon is the place where Lee Hwang taught his followers and studied himself. He was a grand master of Sung Confucianism who helped develop Korea Confucianism. Sangdeoksa and Jengyodang are two buildings erected in 1574 by his followers; they have been called a 'Dosanseowon' (a group of lecture halls) to which the king Seonjo gave his name in 1575. This complex of buildings is decorated simply and neatly as this properly reflects Lee's attitude and personality as a scholar.

A Mask and a Masque Dance

Andong is famous for the Hahoe Mask Dance Drama, which has been designated as the 69th intangible cultural asset by the government, and various folk festivals including the well known Andong Mask Dance Festival. Each mask represents people of the lower to the upper classes and contributes to the Hahoe Mask Dance Drama and is designated as a national treasure.

The Andong Mask dance Festival 2009, the 13th, will be held from September 25 to October 4 in the city of Andong and at the Mask Dance auditorium in Hahoe Folk village. All kinds of mask dances are going to be shown at the festival for this year including some from other countries.
Andong is the place for traditional not only for mask dance but also Chajenonori (one of kind of folk plays for men), Notdaribalgi (folk plays for women), Jeojeondongnongyo (a song about working on a farm), Naebanggasa (an old form of Korean verse by housewives), and Haengsanggasa (an old form of Korean verse by pallbearers).

Andong Gangodeungeo and Andong Soju

The most famous food in Andong is Gangodeungeo (salted mackerel). As Andong is located far from the sea, coating with salt was the best way to ensure the fish would not go bad. There are three kinds of recipes for a salted mackerel: salting right after fishing, salting after landing at port, and salting after arriving at Andong. Andong Gangodeungeo is made using the third method. Salting the mackerel right before the fish go off is the reason why Andong Gangodeungeo tastes so good.

Also Andong Soju (Korean traditional distilled liquor) is also famous made as it is of five kinds of grains: rice, beans, barleys, millet, and African millet. It is quite a strong liquor that is used as a first-aid medicine for cuts, indigestion, loss of appetite, and even stomachache.

Andong Jjimdak (braised chicken with vegetables, starched noodles and red paper in soy sauce) is also famous. It is very spicy because of the spicy red pepper, but really quite delicious.

http://blog.daum.net/dalko

Stimulating Everyone’s appetite! Sweet and Sour Namgo Korean Apricot

Namgo apricots from Jeollanam-do, one of the cleanest regions in Korea, are attracting appetites. Like Korean people, the Japanese really enjoy apricots in a variety of types pickled with vinegar or liquors. Korean normally enjoys green-colored apricots, but the Japanese enjoy Namgo, the slightly red - colored kind. The signature apricots side dish in Japan is umeboshi - salted apricots with the leaves of the beefsteak plant. Popular in Korea is apricot jangajji(pickle) pickled in sugar.

Apricots have been usually cultivated in the southern part of Korea. The ones harvested at Baekun mountain in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do have the best reputation. Baekun Mountain, skirted by Seomjin river, is know as the clean habitat where rare living things growing in wild places. The apricots cultivated in Gwangyang are juicy, fragrant, and delicious. They turn red if it exposed to the sun; and when they grow to the length of 33mm to 45mm it is time to harvest them and make processed foods. So popular are Korean apricots at home and in Japan that every year the stock runs out.

There are three types of apricot grown in Gwangyang: Namgo apricots, Gapjuchoeso, and Cheongmae (green apricots). Namgo apricots are for making jangajji, apricot teas, and liquor; and Gapjuchoeso is for liquor and tea. Cheongmae, the Japanese favorite, is for pickle, liquor, and tea. Juicy and mild, they sell well as processed foods.

Korean apricots have been cultivated to the tune of 7,900 tons annually by 2,626 farms in Gwangyang. The amount is about 28% of all apricots cultivated in Korea and 45% of apricots cultivated in Gwangyang.
Suhyang Apricot farm, one of the biggest apricot farms in Gwangyang, grows its apricots irrigated by natural spring water that containing minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium in fruit-bearing soil. Each apricot tree is given a personal ID so that it can be monitored during the growing period.

Lee Hyeong-jae, President of Suhyang Apricot farm, said: "When out new apricot factory is built, we are going to sell and export our processed products such as salt jangajji."

http://blog.daum.net/dalko

Early Harvested Sweet Pumpkins Captures the Japanese Market

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga39wdTWK3A0qKnJULV_GOomCrjP7pbYV9mPuyEGQ3e3l8eKjFj408C81aNClDZKBU8AECgnwlbvBUSP7NL2Wf_WhLPpK9GZ1qj0khkxdXZn7JWa5HlkwS_lDzl08Li1etyHBVvtJvUDJ5/s320/focus-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355150141152731346" />

Dangjin sweet pumpkins are capturing the Japanese market with the date of harvesting advanced by two weeks.
According to the Dangjin Agricultural Technology Service Center (DATSC), forty tons of sweet pumpkins are going to be exported in this year by the Society for Dangjin Sweet Pumpkin Research (SDSPR). They harvested its sweet pumpkin late last month and are exporting to Japan this month, unlike other farms that shipped two weeks later than the SDSPR.

SDSPR is an association of sweet pumpkin producers in Dangjin established in 2001. It has 49 farms and its members produce 400 tons of sweet pumpkin every year 10% of which is exported.

Well grown sweet pumpkins are about 1.5~2kg each. After harvesting pumpkins need to be stored for 15~20 days to be sweeter up to 12~13 brix. Dangjin sweet pumpkins have been exported to Japan since 2003 and have recognized on the market there for their good quality. They obtained ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certification 9001 in 2007 since which time the SDSPR’s sweet pumpkins are the most expensive in Korea.
Seventeen tons were exported to German and Japan in total.

One Sweet Pumpkin for Each Branch

SDSPR keeps with diligence its own principle ‘One Sweet Pumpkin for One Branch,’ which means each sweet pumpkin is grow singularly by each branch of the organization that ensures the quality of its produce, including the best amount of sugar concentration in each individual sweet pumpkin. The growing pumpkins are hung from props in the air that makes for a beautiful round shape. Such a method of cultivation needs a lot of work by hand and inevitably it reduces the cultivation space thus limiting the amount of pumpkin that can be grown. Still, conscientious application of the ‘One Sweet Pumpkin for One Branch’ principle does not result in less production compared with other farms.

The way to harvest pumpkins two weeks earlier with the right amount of sweetness is simply by starting planting two weeks earlier in about the beginning of April - and not inside a greenhouse. The most important factor to consider is to avoid frost damage; thus technology is used that raises the temperature of the ground and so the plants. After initial growth in the ground the plants are hung in the air - one only to each branch - using tunnel-shaped props to bear their fruits. Agricultural chemicals are not needed because earlier cultivation avoids the monsoon season. The consequence of this method of early cultivation is that the pumpkins are expensive because they are harvested two weeks early and have no competition.

Cho In-seon, President of SDSPR, said: “We are going to try to obtain an organic certificate because SDSPR’s products are healthier and no agricultural chemicals used.”

Strict Quality Control

SDSPR tests the products of its members’ farms and if any is found to be deficient according to the organization’s standards it is forbidden to be sold, even on the domestic market. Strict quality control by the SDSPR of its members’ pumpkins ensures recognition of their reliable and excellent quality. Since the organization obtained ISO 9001 in 2007, each pumpkin has this standard attached.

Kim Suk-kwang, a manager of Vegetables and Flowers Team at DATSC, said proudly: “SDSPR’s products are the best in Korea; the quality is next to perfect. We are going to increase the producing area of sweet pumpkins and spread the use of our early harvesting technology equipment.”
http://blog.daum.net/dalko

Eiffel tower in Korea

Eiffel Tower in Korea.

Real Eiffel?

Very Small Eiffel.

http://blog.daum.net/dalko

The Busan Biennale and the Pusan* International Film Festival (PIFF) are also regularly held in Busan.

An international film festival was held for the first time in Busan in 1996 from which time it has developed as a Mecca in north-east Asia for movie makers and film cognoscenti. Nampo-dong, crowded with cinemas, is the venue for the PIFF. Visitors can see the copperplate hand prints of worldwide famous movie celebrities on the PIFF Road. Busan is also a frequent shooting location for filmmakers. The fact that a domestic hit film like ‘Nowhere to Hide’(1999) was shot in Busan has contributed to the reputation of the metropolis as a thriving movie city. The PIFF is held every October when filmmakers, celebrities, and throngs of moviegoers congregate in the city every year.

Busan is also a city of festivals. In a few months time when summer approaches, the neighborhoods of Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches will be gearing up for splendid festivals. The Busan International Rock Festival (BIRoF) is a rock crystal that shows the admixture of the concrete blue sea and abstract verdant life of the maritime and hinterland life of the Busan environs. The BIRof, the one and only seashore rock festival in Korea, was first held in 2000. Each year a swathe of top musicians from around the globe descends on Busan to rock Korea!

Gwangan Bridge, known locally as the ‘Diamond Bridge,’ at 7,420m-long, connects Namcheon-dong to Haeundae. Construction commenced back in 1994 and the bridge opened to traffic in 2003. It now stands as a prominent landmark of Busan and boasts a bright and florid night scene as the name of the bridge, ‘Diamond,’ indicates. At dusk the view of the illuminated bridge that crosses to Gwangalli takes the viewer’s breath away.

Haeundae Beach is a second to none source of pride in Busan. It is the biggest and considered the best popular beach in Korea with 2km-long sands, warm water in the summer, and a beautiful seascape. At respective ends of the beach are Dalmaji (moon-viewing) Hill and Dongbaek Island, a plus to the already superb view. Be it sunrise or the graceful moon, both are welcome to admiring eyes from Dalmaji Hill. Nurimaru APEC House on Dongbaek Island was the venue for the 13th APEC meeting of Economic Leaders in 2006. Shaped like the modern-style ‘Jeongja’ (traditional Korean summer pavilion), the house has a picture-postcard in view of boundless sea and ever present Diamond Bridge.

Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park also offers a beautiful night view. Since its completion in 1973, the 120m-high towered over the city. The tower is the first view of land vessels have arriving at Busan Port. Colorful lights installed a few years ago, add a mysterious atmosphere to the night scene of the tower.

Befitting the title of the biggest port city in Korea, Busan has the biggest fish market, the Jagalchi Market, in the nation. Indeed, the Jagalchi Market is synonymous with a Korean fish market. Shopping at the market one can hear the Busan dialect and experience the generosity of Busanites while tasting fresh raw fish and ‘Haemul-pajeon’ (seafood green onion pancake). ‘Dongrae-pajeon’(similar to Haemul-pajeon), which was eaten at the Dongrae Market on ‘Samjitnal’ (March 3 according to the lunar calendar) during the Joseon period (the last dynasty of Korea [1392~1910]), is made by mixing seafoods and green onion and pan-frying it with rapeseed oil.

*In 2000 the South Korean government changed the system of the Romanization of Hangul and so ‘Pusan’ was rendered officially as ‘Busan.’ However, as the city’s film festival predated this change it has continued to use Pusan in its official name.
http://blog.daum.net/dalko

Gorgeous Gurye County, Road to Nature

Gorgeous Gurye County, Road to Nature

Gurye county in Jeallanam-do is famous for such beautiful scenery that Tackriji, an ancient geography book written in the Joseon Period (the last dynasty of Korea [1392~1910]), extols the county for having three big things and three beautiful things.

The picturesque landscape of Gurye includes the Mt. Jiri range and the Seomjin River. Gurye is a central region in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and has been regarded, from olden times as the best scenic region. It also boasts broad fields, abundant crops, and the welcoming generosity of the people.

A Blessed County with Nature Intact

Mt. Jiri is the most noted mountain in the southern part of South Korea situated as it is on the southern edge of Korea’s greatest mountain range started from Mt. Baekdu. The mountain is beautiful throughout the four seasons with thick forests, meandering valleys, fantastic rocks and stone formations, and refreshing waterfalls and cascades. Gurye County is to the west of Mt. Jiri. From Gurye, it is possible to ascend up the Nogodan peak (1,507m) in the direction of the Hwaeomsa, a temple. Also, crossing over the Seongsamjae ridge, Nogodan peak can be reached.

Nogodan peak is one of three peaks of Mt. Jiri. It is named after the ‘Nogodan’, an altar enshrining the old goddess of a mountain. The highlands of Nogodan have the grand size of around 280 acre in Jirisan National Park. There can be found the altar where Koreans in the past used to perform religious ties to the goddess of Mt. Jiri. The whole neighborhood of the Nogodan is usually covered with a canopy of clouds and the mid-slope of Mt. Jiri is enveloped in this ethereal umbrella. The effect is imposing as if the peaks of the mountain float on a sea of clouds. The latter is one of ten scenic masterpieces that can be seen on Mt. Jiri. On Mt. Jiri, Manchurian black bears, an endangered species designated as natural treasure No. 329, attract the attention of visitors to the mountain.

Seomjin River embracing Mt. Jiri meanders for over 200km. Renowned for its beautiful scenery, the river is the cleanest in the country. Visitors can enjoy driving along the riverside road adorned with a motley variety of flowers. They can enjoy water leisure sports including rafting on the river.

A Spring County with Yellow and Pink Flowers in Full Bloom

Driving along No. 4 national road on the right side from the Sandong-myeon, northwards through Gurye County, for about ten minutes by car, one can reach Sangwi village. The village has the best plantation of ‘Sansuyu’ (Cornus officinalis) flowers in the nation. Toward the end of every March, Sansuyu flowers come into full bloom. Around that time, the Sansuyu flower festival is held and visitors around the nation flocked to see the yellow blossoms. They can participate in the festival, pick wild greens, and taste the sap of the painted maple (Acer mono) in spring and pick the fruits of Sansuyu and make Sansuyu tea in autumn.

In April a spring flower festival is held in the cherry blossom road - selected as one of the hundred most beautiful roads in Korea - along the Seomjin riverside in Muncheok-myeon. Walking down the cherry tree-lined road, it is easy to be intoxicated with the scent of pale-pink cherry blossom.

A Venerable County with History Breathing Alive

Hwaeomsa temple, a treasured monument of Buddhist culture, was built by Yeongi, an Indian monk, in 544 A.D., when King Jin Heung (534~576) was on the throne in the Silla period (one of the three early kingdoms in Korea [BC 57~AD 935]). Later in 1426 when the Great King Seo Jong (1397~1450) was on the throne in the Joseon period, Hwaeomsa temple was elevated to the home temple of Zen Buddhism. Before the outbreak of the Imjin war, when the Japanese invaded Korea in 1592, the temple had as many as 5,000 rooms, but it was burned down during the war and the monks of the temple fought to the death against Japanese invaders. After the war thankfully the temple was reconstructed. Some cultural assets, like the Gakhwangjeon, the biggest wooden construction in the East, the stone lantern, and the four-lion-supported three-storied stone pagoda of Hwaeomsa temple, were designated as national treasures and thus been protected.

Although Gurye does not produce a lot of green tea leaves, the Jangjukjeon green-tea leaves plantation in Gurye is famous. According to the Sam-guk-sa-gi (a history book about three the kingdoms of Korea in the early age, 1145), in 828 A.D. King Hong Deok during the Silla period ordered the seeds of the green-tea leaf to be sown on Mt. Jiri and the Jangjukjeon became the first plantation to grow green-tea leaves in Korea. Visitors can relish sips of traditional teas as well as green tea in the Jangjukjeon Jeda, a tea-making house.
http://blog.daum.net/dalko

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk-xsPoqnUBBlnj6PldrQFOPYlKA0QIqTljWtcT5Cb0g1szkUMxRaSjVOkk2EcRiEhkhcm3sd4ld7NHP0woBBoTiGqWX7dBojBMrRgRY5eV62FfDiOhXFbze_yo3ugfqfW-JXEIx4yzBL6/s320/%EC%95%88%EB%8F%997.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330380137651509442" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQZg8qhJ3jlL58g9fPTR-RiR7PuyypnBbE7QA5MFy6KAoxPG9cfjnVy9mVKaLFRpVA1Z0ETCOWzwA0e_WT9WBlNkGLMhFUlPyBmIWABELJvFUE2WCUH89lvM_xqRuN1gTbfEbzHPsBSpEB/s320/%EC%95%88%EB%8F%994.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330379934390667378" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGaj6AWjYV66vmsgKfG_gvprjUsLL42jzCTNYaRRMQTj425bPaSeLY5-5lJPj6B6j-VExAYHvhJffCs7eDiyf59rUGQWhJYYAhYh9nd0K_4Wp88NXMuYncA6g2D2hxa5OHH6Am6qOzBJTg/s320/%EC%95%88%EB%8F%996.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330379756674993538" />
Andong is well known as the home of the Seonbi, Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. Indeed, Andong has so many cultural signs all around the city that it has been called ‘the city of cultural assets.’ There is Hahoe folk village that keep the look of an old village, and Dosanseowon, a stronghold of Sung Confucianism, and Talchum, a traditional Korean masque dance that satirized the upper class.

Hahoe Folk village was a clan town of the Yu’s family from the time it became prosperous due to Yu Seong-ryoung and his brother Yu Un-ryoung.

Dosanseowon, A stronghold of Sung Confucianism Dosanseowon is the place where Lee Hwang taught his followers and studied himself. He was a grand master of Sung Confucianism who helped develop Korea Confucianism. Sangdeoksa and Jengyodang are two buildings erected in 1574 by his followers; they have been called a ‘Dosanseowon’ (a group of lecture halls) to which the king Seonjo gave his name in 1575. This complex of buildings is decorated simply and neatly as this properly reflects Lee’s attitude and personality as a scholar.

It is very spicy because of the spicy red pepper, but really quite delicious.<div
