Understanding the pains of small business, we developed Mokumax to make life a little easier.   One of the latest features is our Rss Feeder.  With the Rss Feeder you can add multiple Rss Feeds to your Mokumax account.  Each feed will display the latest 20 snippets of the stream.  When you hover over a snippet you will see two buttons.  One is for displaying more of the story and the other is for quick sharing of the story.  Click the share button and we format the story and title into a nice clean status update with a link.   Simple and efficient.   You won’t be sharing your content (unless it’s your feed)  but you will still be getting your brand name out there.

After you log into Mokumax follow the instructions below.

Step 1

Click on the Add Feed button.

Step 2

Enter your favorite feed URL.   You can get the Rss Feed URL by click on your the RSS button on your favorite websites.   Then just copy the URL from the browser and paste it into the RSS Feed URL box.  Give it a short description and click the “Add Feed” button.

Click the X in the corner when you are finished.

The Rss Feeder dropdown will update with the new feed you just added.

Note: To edit or delete a feed simply select the feed and click the Edit button.

While it is not your original content, which is ultimately the best thing for your website, BUT it will still keep you in the game while you work on generating your own.

Spend some time on Twitter and you will see a few different philosophies when it comes to when to tweet and how often.  It’s a pretty simple observation when it comes to the number of tweets.

Number of Tweets

Looking at @mashable and you’ll see this:

Now that is a lot of tweets!  Mashable started tweeting on Sun Mar 11 21:28:01 EDT 2007.    That is roughly 1,531 days from the beginning until the day of this writing.  On average, it is about 23 tweets per day.  Before you think of scheduling a tweet each hour consider what you are going to tweet about.  Mashable actually tweet a lot more than 23 times a day now.  Each and every tweet includes a link to something.  Some are links to videos and some are links to short breaking news stories.  Sorry, but there are no famous quotes showing up on their tweet line.

TIP: Tweet often… that is, as often as you have something of value to add.

Keep in mind that I assume you are here trying to find tips to promote your business.  If not, for personal accounts, tweet  until you are blue in the face.  Say whatever is on your mind.  Tell the world you just ate a beef burrito at Taco Bell. Ten minutes later tell the world that you have “taco-belly”.  Twitter was designed for that!

Scheduled vs. Automated Tweets

If you follow Guy Kawasaki you may notice that this guy tweets a LOT!  Quite honestly it could be a full-time job reading everything that he tweets.  If you haven’t guessed it, he automates his tweets.  Every new Alltop post on his RSS feed gets posted automatically to Twitter.  So, does this break Twitter’s guidelines and best practices?

Unless I missed something (or Twitter changed their policy since I wrote this), this does NOT break any rules.  Is it good practice for you though?  That’s for you to decide and experiment with.  Before Guy started automating tweets he had already built up a huge following.  You will also notice that he follows almost everyone that follows him.  Do the same!

Scheduling a Tweet

An alternative to automating your tweets is scheduling your tweets.  This is perfect for targeting the best time to get your message across.  Let’s assume it is midnight and you just wrote the best blog article in the world and it will help everyone who reads it.    So, you post to Twitter with a link to your article.   Sadly most, if not all of your followers will miss it.  This is a perfect opportunity for scheduling your tweet.   Don’t just schedule it for Monday at 8am.  Schedule it multiple days at various times with a different message each time.

TIP: Twitter has a policy against posting the exact same message twice in a row.  (It looks like a duplicate tweet to them. )   Schedule your tweet with a different message and #hashtags.  It your status is about original content on your blog make sure you schedule several messages over the next few days and weeks.

Conclusion

The idea is not to concentrate on how often you should tweet.  The goal is to concentrate on adding quality content to your blog on a regular basis.  The more that you share, the more people will engage which will lead to more traffic for your website, more followers and more tweets.  The key to success is quality.  You want quality content, quality tweets and as a result you will gain quality followers that want to hear what you have to say.

User Settings

Now that you have been with Mokumax for a couple of weeks you should be pretty familiar with the look and feel of the application.  If you haven’t been clicking around on all the links then you might have missed the User Settings option.  In User Settings a few of the things you can update include your password, email address, timezone, and notification settings.

Accessing User Settings:

To bring up User Settings click on your email address (which is also your username in Mokumax) in the top right hand corner.

List of Available Settings:

You will see a list of the User Settings that you can update.  Click on one to update that appropriate setting.

Important Notes:

Without going into detail about each User Setting we do have a couple of things to point out.

• Password changes are immediate.  (You do not need to logout and back in.)
• Username changes are immediate AND you should logout and back in.
• When updating a Timezone – This should match the Timezone for when you want your status updates posted.
• Managing Notifications – These requests are all processed nightly.

Five minutes a day:

Spend just 5 minutes a day using Mokumax.  Just 5 minutes. Preferably in the morning (scheduling tweets for the day) or at night (scheduling tweets for the next day).   Remember, quality over quantity.  It is better to have 5 high quality tweets for the day than 20 ramblings.
