I have moved my blog to a new domain – www.molom.org

And I have also moved my tumblelog – tumblelog.molom.org

Here is my announcement:

I have finished developing my new blog and its up and running! I didn’t like having my old blog being so limited, so the solution was to create my own. BUT, there will be a few changes around here. I have made this blog a lot more explicit and I am going to put forward my opinion a lot more than the old molom.wordpress.com blog. Don’t worry, I am developing another project ATM that will provide the things you have missed in my old blog and will be up and running soon and will provide many professional blog posts. I will announce it here and many other place I visit like forums and such.

What else is new?
I didn’t like tumblr so much (Pretty much because it was a complete different domain to where my blog was located). So I came up with a solution, my new tumblelog is in the Links footer or the top right header links, which takes you to tumblelog.molom.org.

What the hell is wrong with your theme?!!

Well, since it’s a personal blog, I wanted it to be plain. My project, which I will be released soon will be a lot more creative. So stay tuned!

Thanks for stopping by and let the source be with you

I have 2 years of Commerce and 2 years of Business Studies under my belt from secondary school and out of all my subjects they were the most useful. Business Studies in Australia teaches you how businesses work and regards much to the law which the businesses have to take into account. With Commerce you learn how you should live as an individual in society, in other words you learn the techniques that will help you in the modern world unlike the usefulness of solving the integration of ‘y = x4 – x2 + 3′ in maths. In Australia most popular subjects won’t ever be used again when stepping out of secondary school and university unless relating to your career.

So at school during Commerce, I’ve learned about my consumer rights in Australia (Not sure if there are many differences in the American amendments, acts, laws etc.) and the main one I have learned and found useful are the laws that are found in the Trade Practices Act 1974, which is still under the statutory law of New South Wales at. It states, that it doesn’t matter what the warranty of a product is, the warranty doesn’t override statutory law and it doesn’t remove my consumer rights. The only thing that matters is if the product or service isn’t of merchantable quality, which practically means if you paid a reasonable price for a product and it breaks for example 13 months after you bought it (And it only has 1 year of warranty), you still are entitled to a refund. It really depends on the product, if you paid 1000 AUD for a PC and it breaks after warranty you normally won’t be entitled because PC’s normally break, which makes it really unpredictable, but if the computer was 4000 AUD, you might have a shot to getting it fixed for free regardless of warranty.

If you ever have a problem related to warranties (IN AUSTRALIA) related to this situation, you should follow these steps to be able to get a free replacement/fix/refund:

Read this pamphlet to get an idea of what you can argue with the manager about or whoever refuses to give you a refund or equivalent replacement.

Then return the product to the retailer (With the invoice/receipt) and demand a refund stating your consumer rights. If refused follow to the next step.

Call the retailer again by phone stating that you want a refund stating your rights (Record name, date of call etc.) and if refused say that you are going to make a complaint to the ‘Office of Fair Trading’ (OFT) and if still refused follow the next step.

DON’T CALL THE OFFICE OF FAIR TRADING, IT WON’T GET YOU ANYWHERE!!! Instead write to ‘The Office of Fair Trade’ (Find the site related to your state and look for the complaint link) a very descriptive complaint (Approx. 1 page) about all the details, what is the situation and what you want to happen. If you get a call from the retailer or acceptance email from the OFT you most likely won and can get your refund back once you return the product and the receipt.

If you don’t receive any calls or emails of acceptance or don’t get a response within 2 weeks, you have been rejected, your argument wasn’t strong enough or you’re situation isn’t valid enough for you to receive a refund. Better luck next time! Sometimes you might receive a call from the refusing business to get a refund, you’ll notice it when you have won.

I had a situation recently and I had to follow all these steps (Except number 5 ) and the OFT sent them a letter and got a refund to two products (Don’t want to be specific and reveal details) valued at 80 AUD each. They were cracking badly and were 1-2 months over warranty. 160 AUD back in my pocket!

Don’t think you won’t get the refund, I also didn’t believe I would get the refund because I got a replacement after 10 months by the same business because they were under warranty. The replacements had another 12 months and because were having the same problem. The replacements were 1-2 months over warranty and was refused the refund, I did the steps above and got the refund. So don’t give up .

Tip: Be smart! I made a better argument because the manager said when I got the first replacement that the model is faulty if the same problem occurs… And they did!

I saved 160 bucks and that letter only took me less than an hour to write and send, not bad for 23 months of these products for free

Hope this post will lead you to some money saving, I’ll buy myself something nice with the 150 now

I find there to be advantages and disadvantages in the Mac GUI, some features make the GUI look nicer, but not function well, but some do both. I’ll state the two main features that people notice when changing to or looking at a Mac, when they are accustomed to the Windows GUI.

Global Menu Bar

The global menu bar is the panel which you see at the top on Mac OS X, where the menu bar is located. The global menu bar is a very old concept, its been in the Macs since the black and white versions.

The original Mac OS 1 (1984!)

Mac OS X still uses the concept of this bar and I find it amazingly useful when I had my Mac and am happy Apple have stuck with their old concept. These are the advantages:

The bar is always in the same place, your response will always be faster when looking for it.

You waste less screen space because you have the system tray, clock etc on the same bar. You can hide the dock without hiding the clock and system tray because of this bar, while on Windows you have to hide all of that. For example if I don’t want a taskbar and want to remove it, but have the system tray visible, I simply can’t do that. If I had the global menu bar, I could just remove the taskbar and not even waste space with the external system tray.

It makes theming far more attractive because less sections are found on the windows

Its still there

Disadvantages? All I can think of is if you have a 30″ screen, which would be a pain sometimes moving the mouse so often such a long distance for frequent tasks.

The Dock

I hated Mac OS 9 when I used it, but when I saw the dock in Mac OS X, I really liked the Mac OS. After time, you recognise the dock useless. The task bar is far more efficient. Why?

A dock hides programs in the background and won’t show whats available at a glance, you have to use the middle button function and minimized stuff is found on the dock. On a taskbar everything is shown, its better having everything in one place.

There is no info shown on the dock about the minimized apps, there are screenshots, but no information until you hover over it.

It takes a lot more space compared to a x1 panel taskbar

The dock takes up far more recourses from my experience (Especially if using that annoying magnification feature )

I like the dock just because its a nice eye candy utility, but in terms of productivity, the task bar is superior.

Linux Global Bar?

Yes, there is a global bar like the Mac one available for gnome, its under testing, but from what I’ve heard its pretty stable (Even though the site states ‘use it at your own risk’). When I will install Arch, I assure you that I will be using this one and AWN

If you want a global bar for the advantages or just want Linux to look like a mac, you can find more info here.

Note: Apparently KDE 3.5 has a global menu option in its settings.

Linux Dock?

There are plenty, but the one I really like and recommend is AWN, its been in development for ages, but its stable and it has a HUGE amount of features/extensions and effects. If you think the Mac dock is nice, you’ll be amazed by AWN.

AWN Site

There are plenty of more themes as well!

Other Docks

Kiba Dock

Want to make Linux look exactly like a Mac?

I don’t see the point, you’ll eventually get bored of the theme and want to change, but everyone thinks differently I guess. Click here for a very long instruction on making Linux look 99% Mac-like. But you should install the global menu to add an extra touch of mac

My previous post, seems to have made quite a ruckus. I have got a very large number of referrals from the tuxmachines website (And I’m very grateful and thanks to whoever posted my post on that website) because my post was put on the front page for some few days, I was overly excited. Some diggs came out and so on. I had positive and negative comments, but the negative comments due to that, which were and are still false, which included/related to:

I hate Ubuntu and Canonical

I think Debian is better than Ubuntu [PERIOD]

I think Ubuntu is a poor distro because it’s far more recognised

I’m going to get some points out before anything else, which are:

I don’t hate Ubuntu, I prefer Debian over it and that’s it

I don’t prefer Debian over Ubuntu because Ubuntu is far more recognised

I love my Diet Coke and it doesn’t make me anymore feminine

I believe that Canonical isn’t here for ‘Free Software’, it’s my opinion and don’t go against me for it, of course I respect everyone’s opinion though. Mark Shuttleworth is an entrepreneur who has sold a security company for a very very large amount of money, and I don’t think it will be the last. I have spoken to other knowledgeable Linux users about Shuttleworth and what they say makes a lot of sense. Let me just share a quote, so you get the idea and so I don’t spell it out for you:

‘Shuttleworth founded Thawte in 1995, which specialised in digital certificates and Internet security and then sold it to VeriSign in December 1999, earning R 3.5 billion (about US$ 575 million at the time).’

I think Canonical was made for the same reason. Why? Because I think there are more important things that Free Software (World Poverty, World Hunger, Global Warming, The Homeless and so on), and I’m sure Shuttleworth knows the same. Canonical are probably not getting filthy rich at the moment, but if the idea works, I think it will turn out like a Micrsoft-like project (Not the same, but similar).

Ubuntu is a great OS, but the reason I made that post was for awareness, many believe Linux is Ubuntu, instead of Ubuntu is Linux. Many Ubuntu users that haven’t tried out other distros will find it more comfortable using the mentioned alternatives. I just wanted users to find something that suits them more, but if there wasn’t a better distro for that user, Ubuntu is still a great OS and the user should stick with it. If people don’t sit out trying OS’s they will stick with the same OS for the rest of their lives, think of it for Windows users as well. I have met people that thought that Windows is superior to the rest because it’s more popular than any other OS, it could be the same for Ubuntu when referring to Linux.

If I wanted something installed quickly and done without any trouble, it would be Ubuntu. But if I wanted my OS fast and stable, it would be Debian. A pure Debian distro (Like Parsix, Mepis or DreamLinux) is generally faster and stabler than Ubuntu. Ubuntu is also based on Debian, but an unstable branch of Debian called Sid, where stability is a improved a little and there is also a lot of bloat added. A comment I had to delete told me that I can’t generalise like I did, but if I didn’t generalise I would have to compare every Debian distro to Ubuntu, and I’m not going to do that.

In that reason, I don’t hate Canonical or Ubuntu, I simply prefer other distros. I would say the same the SUSE, Fedora, Mandriva and others, they are slow and unstable compared to pure Debian and Slackware distros and thats why I prefer these pure distros.

Now, I commented that Microsoft is like any other company and I believe it to be the same or even better. Why? Because there are companies that are far worse. Microsoft is just a company that practically an oligopoly, of course they kill competition most of the time, but they don’t use cheap labour and pay people from developing companies cents an hour as much as other clothing industries. Microsoft didn’t place cocaine in their products, like Coca-Cola did in the early 1900’s. Microsoft isn’t the cause of global warming unlike the petrol, oil and coal industries. Microsoft don’t do those kind of immoral things at a large extent like other companies. People put this ‘evil’ image on Microsoft because it is one of the most known monopoly-like companies and they build products that are not of top quality, but that doesn’t make them evil. Microsoft do immoral acts like breaking patent laws and avoid certain fines in some ways, but they are not as immoral as what other companies do.

Now in terms of not being open-source, most companies work like that in the real industry (When I mean real industry, I mean industries that produce proper tangible products, not software). Coca-Cola & Pepsi keep their recipes secret, which is a lot like being closed source, sure it isn’t illegal to steel their recipe in most ways, but its far less possible to steal it compared to closed source code. Closed source code/patency is a way to keep this metaphorical recipe a secret, and if it wasn’t for closed source, all close stakeholders wouldn’t have earned the dividends and salaries provided by Microsoft.

Do I prefer Open-source? Yes I do. But do I find Closed-source unethical? In most ways, no.

The real world works the closed-source way, and if you believe closed source is unethical, you shouldn’t be shopping at the super market anymore. This debate in open-source and closed source is far more controversial because the software industry long ago was all Open-Source and then Closed-Source was introduced, but closed-source in the real world was always in place. Nobody would purchase some popular brands if there was no closed-like methods. Think of it, no body would go to KFC if a competitor had the same ingredient at a cheaper price, open-source encourages more competition, but less profits.

I do prefer Open-source and support it more because it makes community more special and important, people can participate without being employed into a business and Linux is a large example.

If anyone has any returning arguments, please comment below, I’m not closed-minded and respect everyones opinion. And as for some of the people’s comments, which I may have deleted, I’m sorry. I didn’t anytime to respond and the comment box seemed to be a flame war in that post. I have made this post to elaborate my opinion and I hope people understand

Apple has released a range of new iPods, and overall I have found some features useful, some completely useless and some just a complete gimmick.

Let me just categorize these things and mention one after another.

iPod Classic

Upgrades: 120gb instead of 160gb and as thin as the old 80gb classic. Firmware upgrade that has the marketing gimmick called ‘genius’.

This is really not an innovation, but I find it kind of nice they have downgraded the 160gb to 120gb and made it thinner, in my opinion I prefer physical size than capacity, but proportionally. So no arguments about this, the price has gone down and I couldn’t ask for more. And the old 160gb? I don’t think anyone needs such a big HDD unless they haven’t compressed their movies to MP4.

iPod Nano

Upgrades: New size and design, increase in capacity (Up to 16gb now), accelerometer, firmware upgrade including genius and some more useless features.

3 days ago a guy told me 'everyone has to get the new nano'. I asked 'Why?', he told me 'It's so cool! It comes in so many different colours!'. Some people buy anything for the worst reasons... Cough... Impulse Buying...

Ok! A new design… It looks nice, but I can’t stand how the screen is curved, I can see a lot of glare complaints soon. Personally I prefer the last iPod nano which is short, wide, but very thin.

For movies? Can you imagine how you would have to hold a thing that small to watch movies in landscape? It would be like holding a bicycle handle. And I can see another ‘originality’ idea by Apple.

I see that the zune 80 also has a landscape view for movies. I wonder if Apple copied them.

Ok. ‘Genius’ is a marketing gimmick, I’ll make a post regarding that and iTunes 8 later.

The accelerometer is another way to get people to look at it and go ‘Wow!’ and not think about how useless it is. What is the difference just making the firmware go into landscape when a movie is being viewed, no matter if the iPod is tilted or not. Wait! I know now! It’s really, really cool, I’ve got to buy one now! (Sarcasm).

When the iPod is shaked it changes the song?… Wow, you know that the chinese clone iPods and iPhones had that for more than a 2 years? Took Apple quite a while.

Tell me what's the point of coverflow?!!! Its just a way to make people say 'Wow' and make the ipod battery go dead faster... worst navigation UI

The new upgrade to 16gb? Can’t complain, but if you really want a 16gb player check the Chinese players (Which feature a large screen, are touch screen and play music/video) that aren’t hacked on Ebay, they are quite decent and are $110 USD opposed to $200 iPod which doesn’t have any touch features, but as many know, syncing to iTunes is very easy compared to uploading the songs to the clones (But that doesn’t bother me, I would rather save $90 and buy myself something else (I have different needs/wants))

Standard Earphones

I love them, although the quality of the sound on Apple earphones were always rubbish compared to the earphones supplied with Creative MP3 players, I really like the new functionality. The new earphones now have a remote attached to the earphone’s cable/wire (Volume and fast forward/rewind/play&pause), and also have a microphone on the remote. A plus to Apple for upgrading their earphones, really good if you don’t want to pull out your iPod from your pocket for the basic functions.

New In-Earphones

I don’t want to comment about them, I have heard how rubbish the previous ones were and Apple never made good earphones and I don’t expect them to make good ones now. And for $79, I wouldn’t spend my bucks on them.

iPod Touch

Upgrades: New design (Thinner), accelerometer, game innovation, built in speaker, volume controls & longer battery life.

Nothing innovative other than the new accelerometer IMO, but seriously, do you need it? And the NEW way to play games! Imagine how many times you would drop the iPod when tilting it constantly to play a game and how you would get sudden glares when tilting the iPod at different angles.

An innovative way to drop your iPhone!

Built in speaker? That took Apple a while, but still it is a good upgrade. And there are quite a few nice things they’ve added, like battery life and the volume controls. They are not innovative upgrades but very useful. The Touch has overall nice upgrades, but Apple seems to have tried to do the ‘WOW’ factor again with the stupid accelerometer to make consumers take out their wallets.

Other notes:

There are some features regarding the new players I haven’t mentioned that I believe aren’t that important.

Conclusion

A lot of the things Apple released at this conference were useless, but some were really nice and useful. But there is one thing I want to ask everyone before they purchase this. If you have an iPod (or whatever Mp3/4 player) and want to purchase one of these new ones, do you really need it for the new features/capabilities it has? You have an old iPod photo 20gb? Why do you need 120GB’s when 20gb suits you well for photos and music? If you really need/want to watch videos for trips or whatever it may be, buy a new iPod that suits your needs.

Apple does one thing though that many don’t recognise, they make HUGE, HUGE and HUGE publicity for some features that aren’t all that amazing, making everyone think that they need to buy the new (These stupid things are even on the news when these iPods are released).

If you want to buy a new iPod, buy it if you want/need it, but if you have one that is perfectly suitable for your needs, don’t buy one. ‘I’m fine with a 4gb nano and don’t need 16gb’s’, think of it that way.

And be sure to research for other alternatives (Zune, Creative, Archos and others) before you just purchase the iPod. (ebay has some very capable clones at a very small price (Even seen 8gb players go for 50 USD that are not amazing, but its job, I have the 4gb version it does what I need) and might suite your needs.)

Read this post after reading this post and/or before commenting on this post.

I’ll admit it, I really dislike Ubuntu and its official variants (Kubuntu & Xubuntu). The reason why is because I find it bloated, slow and unstable compared to other distros. Many believe that its the only proper user-friendly distribution available. Well… There are more and better alternatives to Ubuntu in some aspects, and these of course are proper/pure Debian-based distributions. I have tried some and they are as easy to use as Ubuntu. Advantages of proper/pure Debian-based distros?

Faster… A LOT FASTER

Stabler… A LOT STABLER

More Packages… A LOT MORE PACKAGES (Currently ~18 000)

Easy Upgrades to New Bases… A LOT EASIER UPGRADES

I will highly recommend these distributions if you want Gnome, KDE or XFCE. These are:

Mepis

Have I tried it? No

Mepis has a long history compared to new distributions. This is a distribution that is based on Debian, supplying the KDE Desktop Environment. This distribution is friendly and easy to use. Mepis supplies all the positives of Debian providing a friendly and elegant system.

Parsix

Have I used it and installed it? Yes, and I still have it on my laptop with no other OS partitions.

Parsix is not as known as Mepis, but I find it to be the best Ubuntu alternative. It is Debian Testing (Which I find far stabler than Ubuntu) + Gnome. Releases are frequent and the distro is very speedy compared to the standard Ubuntu. Many people are put off by this distro because it has a high emphasis on Persia/Iran, but when you install it, you won’t notice any of that (Just go to the keyboard settings and remove the secondary language, which has the capability of changing the English to Persian visa versa with a keyboard shortcut and you’ll never have any trace of the Persian settings again). The community is very friendly and helpful as well. It is not as user friendly as Ubuntu when setting up wireless, but that is about it (I think anyone can live with that). I highly recommend this distro to Ubuntu users, because of its speed, user-friendliness, stability and elegance.

DreamLinux

Have I tried it: Yes

I have not found an exact replica to Xubuntu in looks and set up, but DreamLinux is a Debian distro + XFCE and can be set up easily to look like Xubuntu. DreamLinux has a mac-like dock at the bottom (I believe its Engage) and if you remove that change the panels, change the theme and your ready to go. I personally don’t like the theme though, looks like a mac-aqua-look-a-like. DreamLinux is amazingly fast and I never tried a Debian distro, which is as fast as this. The installation is easy as the Ubuntu installer and I haven’t found there to be any problems.

Other DE Debian distros:

Fluxbox – Mepis Antix

E17 – Maryan Linux (Soon) & Elive

Whenever I see this video, I feel like hitting Steve with a raccoon tied to a stick. Lets first give my opinions of Steve Jobs and some general knowledge. (You’ll see the video later)

Steve Jobs is the co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Apple and has stood at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and introduced the new products, which were then after placed on the Apple website. He has introduced products like the Macbook Air, iPhone, iPod and other Apple’s so called ‘innovative’ products.

Now lets get to my opinion about Apple and Steve. I’m very much surprised Apple has survived under the so called ‘monopoly’ of Microsoft. Apple was about to drop out, but the iPod saved them, it lifted their market share and gave them enough revenue to continue their other Apple products such as the iMac, Powermac, Powerbook and iBook.

Their unpopularity has saved them in a way in terms of Mac OS X. Mac OS X had a compatibility environment that would be able to make Mac OS 9 software work under the new architecture of OS X. Microsoft can do the same, but will have the big risk of loosing market share, its the software availability that makes Microsoft the top of the rank, so if Apple were in the same situation, they wouldn’t be able to.

Apple do their marketing right, they are cheapskate company, who charges consumers an arm and a leg for their products and closes of all competition when it comes to using the Apple operating system on other non-apple hardware. Phystar took the challenge, and it seem to be a real unstable situation due to Apple’s EULA. As you have seen in my other Apple post, you can save over 500 AUD buying a better PC equivalent, imagine when you start comparing to the higher end Macs, you’ll probably save over 1500 AUD. Apples iPods and iPhones are really overpriced when comparing the amount of market share they have compared to Creative and the Zune, Apple produces to many that I’ve heard an 80Gb iPod costs $60 USD to make.

So, when I think of Apple, they have a powerful marketing scheme, they are obviously doing something right by selling an overpriced product (I wouldn’t consider it price skimming though) called the iPod and still have the majority of the market share (I believe its around the 75% line). Apple makes consumers adore the iPod by its looks and user-friendliness, as you would think looks don’t matter, but for the average consumer user-friendliness matters. Apple has pushed an image of having a sleek & polished looking product with the touch of user-friendliness and thats everyone believes (Well, most). You have old seniors that call an MP3 player an iPod, the name ‘iPod’ seems to have placed an image like how we call a cola drink a ‘Coke’. Apple has pushed an image unlike any other software/hardware company I have ever seen. And Macintoshes are starting to have the same image, and they only have somewhere around the 10% of the market share regarding the OS market, although Linux is close and is referred to as a ‘nerd’/'geek’ product. So it is clear that they do good marketing, the pushed advertising and the well thought out product is the somewhat perfect marketing they have used.

When you ask my opinion about it, they are a company that tries to rob people’s wallets using any marketing scheme. The batteries on the iPods are somewhat designed to be next to irreplaceable by the average consumer, so when the warranty is out… you need a new battery, which means you need to pay a large amount of money for Apple to replace the battery or you need to buy a new iPod. The iPod only runs the main Apple formats that are used so you are somewhat forced to purchase videos from the Apple store, the iPod will ‘NEVER’ play DIVX/XVID, unless someone (Not from Apple) makes a hack for the iPod touch or iPhone. The warranty can’t be any shorter and the default phone support only lasts 30 days. Companies are driven by revenue and market share and Apple does it this way. Microsoft does other ways, but I find it incomparable to Apple.

My opinion of Steve Jobs? Well, he has controlled the business very well, as you see they own 75% of the market share for MP3 players because of him and he has set out the marketing strategies, without him, I don’t think Apple would be as good or better as it is with him as CEO. He does annoy me in his arrogant ways stating the iPhone, iPods and Macs are the best products available as indicated in his many speeches, but I do admire his ways of implementing completness and user-friendliness into the Apple products.

Ok! To the video. The video was recorded in 1996, and yes… it is a clip of Steve Jobs (He had hair in those days).

Steve: ‘The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste, they absolutely have no taste’

molom: Please elaborate Steve?

Steve: ‘They don’t think of original ideas’

Ok, ‘don’t think of original ideas’. If Apple think of ONLY original ideas, then I’m Rick Astley .

Apple will rip you off, they're never going to let you down, Apple loves their money and will hurt you!

Lets think of some unoriginal ideas Apple have done:

Dashboard – Konfabulator was released way before

Dock – Yes, Steve Jobs was part of the Nextstep project and Nextstep was one of the first to create the dock, but does that still doesn’t make it a new and original idea

Spotlight – Searching utilities have been released since the wheel was made, its just a pop up instead of a window… very original…

Kernel – A BSD kernel?… Very innovative.

BSD – BRAVO, you (Apple/Steve Jobs) ripped off the Open/Free/NetBSD systems that the BSD teams have developed (And are still developing) without making any profit and made it part of the Mac OS X system. You’re there making millions of $$$ and never paid a cent to the *BSD projects, thanks for your originality and kindness, Apple.

The dock Again – Oh my God Steve Jobs! The new 10.5 dock can reflect windows and is 3D’ish. You deserve a medal for continuously boasting about it (Go on the Mac OS 10.5 WWDC video with the new dock and you’ll see how he boasts about something thats not that amazing). Apple is so original… in the way they stole the idea of the looking glass project dock.

Wow! I see that the looking glass project stole Apple’s 10.5 dock even though Apple released it after the Looking Glass project (Sarcasm)

Spaces – Linux and Unix DE’s have had them since who knows and the idea is a complete copy of the project Apple killed called VirtueDesktops (Click here for the VirtueDesktops site) and also Xerox were the first to implement the idea in 1986 (More than 20 years old! Wow! Apple’s original, not to mention Apple stealing the patented Xerox Gui as well)

Stacks – Wow!!! A pop up with images, sounds like a standard menu with thumbnails with an annoying curve to make it harder for your brain to interpret.

I can keep on going, but I don’t want to waste another 3 hours of my life because of Apple originality at stealing concepts and ideas. That is one thing I can’t stand about Apple fanboys, whenever I speak to them or start a conversation, they end up going about how Microsoft ’stole’ the concepts such as instant search, window previews, ical (A calendar program is original? What?!!!), flippy triangles from finder, photo organisers/iphoto, widgets, 3d chess and having eye candy.

After watching this video, I wanted to slap Bertrand Serlet with a wet salmon, seriously.

‘It has this well-loved feature called activation’

Oh… Ok… MS has the majority of the market share, which leaves to a large amount of pirating of their Windows OS and especially when they sell it at a high price, that’s how MS makes their money. So, Microsoft makes this annoying side-feature called activation to minimize pirating the Windows OS. Apple gets their money by overpricing their hardware and not their OS. So, let me ask Bertrand a question. What will Apple do if they end up with the majority of the OS market share and people start pirating their OS? And I’m sure Apple’s Final Cut Studio has a very similar feature to Windows activation. Guess Bertrand didn’t want to mention it.

Now lets go to Bertrand’s other comparisons. Apple was the first to invent the calendar and the colours ‘red’ & ‘blue’ (Oh my gosh! That’s what Apple should have done, they should have patented the colours red and blue). Apple also made the abbreviation ‘RSS’.

I guess we shouldn’t give credit to MS for creating the registry and dll system (Which is somewhat an original idea by MS) and give credit to Apple for stealing code from a base system called BSD. Next time I see Steve Jobs, I will award him with a trophy for ‘originality’, even more so for Bertrand.

Vista is compared to the main OS competitor that releases a new OS far more frequently compared to Windows, of course a lot of it is going to look like it. Apple look like they don’t copy because the average consumer doesn’t know the history of some concepts and ideas and don’t know other projects like project looking glass. Apple was the first to make proper eyecandy opposed to Windows, which is why people believe Vista copies Mac OS X. Next a mac fan is going to tell me that Apple invented eye candy and called it ‘iCandy’. Apple don’t have to worry so much on security and so on because it is built on the so called ‘rock solid’ BSD Base, while MS has a huge market share and have far more security and virus problems in Windows, which is why they have to worry about it more and focus on that instead of ‘eye candy’ during the Windows ME and XP period (And still now).

All I have against Apple is the overpriced products, cheapskate marketing strategies and their arrogance of calling everything they make ‘innovation’. I really shouldn’t say anymore, they do make a good product that does do what it says, which is ‘It just works’ (Not being sarcastic).

I do not hate Apple. If I really do ‘hate’ Apple, I am a hypocrite, I own an Apple iPod Classic (80gb) I bought from Costco when I went to the states, I did own an iMac G5 for 4 years and I also had an iPod photo before I bought the ipod classic and I can assure you it won’t be the last time I’ll buy an Apple product. I simply write posts like these because I simply like writing them, I do like following the first amendment in Australia and I like showing people my perspective on things.

PS. The new iPods have come out recently, I will make a post on what I think about them soon
