Many thanks to our friend Nina, who is a twitter friend of mine and a myAgenda user. She writes the blog accordingtonina.com, and just conducted a fabulous survey among her twitter friends and blog readers. She asked them, what is your favorite writing implement to use to "pencil-in" dates in your momAgenda or myAgenda?
The top 3 results are posted now, and I am so excited I might just have to run out to Staples to buy all three. The thing is, my obsession with pens is almost as severe as my obsession with day planners, stationery, note pads, etc. I know that many of you feel the same way!

Stay-At-Home Project Ideas

This week, 3 out of my 4 children are home sick from school with what my doctor is euphemistically calling "a virus." I don't know what virus it is, and the doctor did not offer to test them, so we are waiting it out at home. Good news is, their symptoms are (at least so far) really mild; fever, sore throat and cough, but nothing severe.
Bottom line for me is that I am home from work, looking for projects around the house so that I can keep busy, keep myself from worrying, and feel productive. Here are a few project ideas in case you, too, are at home unexpectedly with plenty of time on your hands...
- Clean out kids' clothes. Believe it or not, my 6 year-old still had a drawer full of shorts in his room! I spent this morning clearing out the last of his summer clothes and replacing them with turtlenecks and long pants.
- Sort through winter coats. Another project I tackled this morning was our coat closet. (Interestingly, I counted 10 blue jackets that belong to my husband. Need to bring that up with him.) Anyway, I set aside all the coats that the kids have outgrown and also all the adult-size coats that neither Larry nor I have worn in the last year, and I will donate all those to charity. The coat closet now looks neat and organized.
- Update photo albums. We still have piles of pictures from last year, not to mention this year, that need to be put into albums. I already bought the albums so have everything needed to get this project done.
- Sort through the toys. With the holidays coming up soon, now is a perfect time to go through all the toys and throw out or donate everything that the kids have not played with in the last 6 months.
Do you have any additional project ideas to share?
And for all of you who are also home with sick children, I wish your families all the best for a speedy recovery.:-)

Resilience: Can We Pass It On?

"Nobody really cares if you're miserable, so you might as well be happy." Cynthia Nelms

The above quote appears in this week's weekly momAgenda spread, and when I read it I remembered being 12 years old. We all remember being 12 years old, right? The drama, the "oh why me," the "nobody understands," etc., etc. When I was 12 life had admittedly not been easy up until that point: my parents had long-ago divorced, and the situation between them was still ugly, and I had a stepfather who really did not like me at all. I spent a lot of time in my room thinking about my life and my problems and trying to sort things out, but most of all, feeling sorry for myself.
Interestingly, this approach did nothing to change my situation. My mom still traveled a lot for work, my stepfather still disliked me, and I still had no athletic prowess or artistic talent or even academic brilliance whatsoever compared to my friends at school. One night in my room, listening to the Journey Escape album for the millionth time, I had an epiphany: Nobody feels sorry for me, except me, so I might as well get over it. It was like a light turning on. I realized I was wasting my time feeling sorry for myself, and resolved to move forward and make the best of my situation. I can't remember exactly, but I think I might have even made a list of steps I would take to start feeling better and creating a happier life (even then I was a compulsive list-maker).
I don't know if it was resilience at work in that moment, or if it was sheer practicality, but it served me well. Was it a trait I was born with, or a skill my mom fostered in me? The reason I want to know is that I want my kids to have that same ability, the ability to stop wallowing (because we all wallow at some point or another) and pull themselves up and out of the muck.
We are so busy protecting our kids from harm, from discomfort, and even from teachers they might not "click" with, that we might be missing the chance to help them build up their own resilience skills. I certainly would not have chosen some of the circumstances of my childhood, but I would not trade the life skills I have now, and I hope I can find a way to pass them on to my own children. (Preferably, without the mean stepfather!)
What about you? How do you foster resilience in your kids?

During October, we are supporting our favorite charity, the Breast Cancer Alliance, by donating 20% of the proceeds from our Fuchsia Desktop day planners.
Breast cancer is a cause that is dear to all of our hearts; we all know someone who has been affected. The reason we love the Breast Cancer Alliance is because they are funding vital cutting-edge research and early detection initiatives. They have awarded over $9,000,000 since their inception in 1996.
Thank you to all of our customers for helping us to make a difference in the lives of women in this country who are affected by breast cancer!

Tips for Organizing Your Closet

Once or twice a year, it is a good idea to spend some time organizing your closet. You don't need a large or expensive "closet system" in order to benefit from an organized and neat closet. Here are a few tips that will help you get this task done more efficiently.

1. SORT. Get rid of everything in your closet that does not belong there. I am referring to the classic interlopers, such as yoga mats, empty shoe boxes, suitcases, and, of course, presents you are hiding from your kids. Put those items in a storage spot that you do not use everyday, such as your attic or basement (or my personal favorite, the garbage).

2. TOSS. Go through every item of clothing and ask yourself the following question: Have I worn this in the last year? If you don't wear an item, it does not get a place in your closet. Donate it to someone who will use it! A second question to ask yourself is, Does this item flatter me? Think not just about whether you can zip it up; think about what it does for you. Does it make you feel beautiful, or does it just sit on your body? Only keep (and in the future, only buy) items that make you feel fabulous.

While you are tossing clothes that you don't wear or that don't flatter you, please toss out the wire hangers that are ruining all of your beautiful clothes. Invest in good hangers to keep your clothing looking good over time. And toss out all the dry cleaning bags so that your clothes can breathe.

3. ORGANIZE. Set up separate areas in our closet for dresses, shirts/blouses, and pants. If you are so inclined, you can organize by color as well (for example, place all your black pants together, followed by brown pants, etc). Fold sweaters (do not hang them, it ruins their shape!), t-shirts, and workout clothes. Put shoes in clear boxes (I like the ones at the Container Store) labeled on the outside, that way they won't gather dust. You can also use small containers (either put them in drawers or on closet shelves) to organize items like bras, underwear, socks, and hosiery. For accessories like belts, use hooks to hang them, or roll them up and place them in another small container.

Most important, follow these steps at least once a year, preferably twice. I like to organize my closet once in the spring and once in the fall. If you can maintain a neat and organized closet it will pay off by making your life easier--it will take less time and effort to get dressed each day!
...Visit the site to post comments!

Homework Tips

I don't know about you, but in my house, chaos is the prevailing theme. With 4 kids running around to various activities, not to mention friends coming in and out all the time, our house sometimes feels like Grand Central Station! So when it is time to do homework, I like to create an atmosphere that is calm and conducive to learning.
- Clear the table: choose a homework spot and keep that table clear of papers and clutter. A clean environment that is free from distractions will help your child stay focused.
- Keep supplies handy: I keep a little container filled with sharpened pencils, blue pens for the older kids, highlighters, white-out, a ruler, scissors, tape, and a stapler. This is usually all they are going to need on a typical night.
- Stick around: I try to stay in the general vicinity while they are doing homework, so that I will be available if anyone needs help. I try not to hover, though, because I want them to learn how to work independently.
- Get help: Sometimes my 3rd grader and 6th grader both need help, and I can't be in two places at the same time. That's when I enlist my 8th grader to help me help them! Frankly, most of the homework material is more familiar to him, so he is probably more qualified! If you don't have an 8th grader handy, you can always try a neighbor or friend.
- Stock up on supplies: Here is a partial list of items I like to keep stored in my office, because I know the kids will need them at some point over the course of the school year: Poster board, index cards, looseleaf paper, three-ring notebook dividers, spiral notebooks, post-it notes, and calculators.
Do you have any more homework tips or supplies to add to the list? We want to hear them, so please let us know!

Chance is a sweet little kitten that my business partner, Maureen, adopted. Unfortunately, this poor little guy seems to have been abandoned by his mom, as the people Maureen adopted him from actually found him curled up in a ball under a house they were building! He is about 5 weeks old, and he only weighs 9 ounces. He is going to be hanging out with us in the momAgenda offices until he is bigger and healthy. We are so loving this little kitten! You would think he was our new baby. Please send Chance your good wishes!

momAgenda Hacks: A Contest

The other day on Facebook I posted a picture of my 11 year old daughter's myAgenda hack. She actually used one of the satin ribbons to tie a pen to her myAgenda! And the little bow she made with the ribbon was just perfect! Words cannot express how touched I feel that my daughter has clearly taken after me in so many ways, but I digress. (If you'd like to see the picture, go to our facebook page, link is below, and while you are there, please become a fan of momAgenda!)
It got me thinking that many of you have emailed or facebooked me about changes (or as we call them here, hacks) you have made to your momAgenda day planners and folios. You have attached folders, zipper pouches, and pens, not to mention using certain pages in different ways than how they were intended. We want to know about your hacks, because maybe they can help us design better products in the future!
So tell me: what is your momAgenda product hack? Feel free to submit a hack to any of our products, including day planners and folios.
The winner will not be randomly selected; it will be the momAgenda staff favorite. We will give away a momAgenda or myAgenda Desktop to the winner (your choice of color)!!!!! Feel free to attach a photo as well!
We will choose a winner in exactly 1 week, on Friday, September 25. Good luck all.....

Some Sold Out Items (Already!)

It's that time of the year, when back-to-school is almost behind us, and we get to evaluate how much stock we have left for the Fall/Holiday shopping season. Each year we consistently find ourselves in some sort of a good news/bad news situation at this time of year, and this year is no exception.
The good news is, there is stock left of many of our most popular items! All of the momAgenda Desktop colors are still available. In addition, we are only out of one of the Mini Daily colors, the True Purple.
The bad news is, we are out of stock on several very popular items, including several of our myAgenda versions. As you know we introduced a brand new metallic cover for myAgenda, as well as a larger size for this year. We have been absolutely blown away by the sales results thus far, which have far exceeded our expectations. We don't like to be sold out this early in our season, so we will plan on ordering more--a lot more--next year!
In the interest of saving you the time of checking various items to see what's left, here is a list of what is currently out-of-stock. (Please note that these items will not be replenished, these items are gone for the year.)
Out of Stock Items:
momAgenda Mini Daily, True Purple
momAgenda Personal Portfolio, Rasberry
myAgenda Large, Caribbean Sea
myAgenda Large, Sterling Silver
myAgenda Large, Mochaccino
myAgenda original size, Caribbean Sea
Mini Clips

Thanks everyone for your support for momAgenda and it's up-and-coming sister, myAgenda! We appreciate it!
