My husband was mentioning to me the other day that his eldest sister is a little dumb. The reason being she tells everything about her married life to their mother. To him, he feels that there are certain things about one’s spouse that shouldn’t be told to other family members. Going by his logic, quarrels and dissatisfaction between husband and wife should be kept private between the two people concerned.

Well, in my sister-in-law’s case, she is not having a particularly happy marriage. There are a lot of problems between her and her husband. So, each time there is a quarrel or disagreement, she ends up telling her mother because she calls her often to chat. What happens then is my mother-in-law begins to see only the bad side of her daughter’s husband. Remember these are only one-sided stories from her own daughter because the son-in-law are not there to defend himself.

The problem is when you already dislike someone, each subsequent negative comments that you hear about the same person would only strengthen your dislike. Therefore, every complaint from my sister-in-law now about her husband would naturally attract anger from her mother. Furthermore, it is difficult for a mother not to side with her own child in any dispute.

The result? My mother-in-law ends up making the problem worse by pouring fuel into the fire. If your mother agrees with every bitter word you say about your spouse and adds in her own negative comments, don’t you think you will be even angrier with your spouse?

So, that is why my husband has this opinion that his sister is a little silly to tell everything to their mother. Close family members, especially parents, have the capability to influence your thoughts. To tell them all your marriage problems and complain about your spouse could potentially hurt your relationship because of the negative comments they may make that can influence your emotions and thinking. In other words, they can stoke the fire.

I know a lot of people do have much to share with their parents and siblings. The question is how much about your spouse and marriage problems should you reveal to those closest to you?

It’s been some time since I owned a car but the last one that I had was a Toyota model fitted with chrome accessories that gave it a really nice look. When I was trying to sell it, many buyers who came to view the car actually admired it because the accessories made the car looked a little more classy and dazzling.

If you fit your car with good quality chrome accessories, they do last and the shiny quality does not really fade with time. So, if you want to sell your car, try fitting in these accessories and who knows, you might be able to entice more buyers and fetch a better price. People are naturally attracted by look and even if you don’t intend to sell your car, these accessories will cause others to give it a second glance as you drive past. It’s about the style.

Straightforward question: How much lollies, candies, sweets and all other forms of confectionery do you let your kid eat a day?

My son has the habit of eating lollies and sweets now after each meal and I’m trying to get rid of this unhealthy habit. Not that I let him eat a lot. Only one and at most two lollies a day but to me, it is still not a good habit to have.

The problem though, it is hard to tell a kid to stop eating lollies and sweets when you are also equally guilty of pinching them from the fridge or jar, right? I suppose the solution would be not to buy any. But can you live without any confectionery at home at all? For me, it would feel like something is missing if I don’t have some sweet stuff lying around that I can chew on sometimes.

So, all along now, I have been controlling how much of these sweet stuff my son takes a day. He knows he can’t have more than one or two lollies a day but that has never deterred him from asking for more on most days. Talk about persistence, all because of the desire to taste some lollies.

Let me ask parents this: How much time do you allow your kids to watch TV everyday? During my time as a kid, the channels and the number of programs that can actually attract a 4 year old to sit in front of the TV is pretty limited. You would probably only have an hour of really interesting kiddy programs everyday after school hours.

But these days, apart from the free national TV channels, you also have a range of pay TV channels that screen children programs. If you subscribe to the cartoon channels, you would get to watch cartoons like 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Even if you don’t subscribe to the cartoon channel specifically, it can get bundled up as a package and you have to take it together with other channels that you would want to watch. So, whether you like it or not, you end up with a kiddy channel or two.

Therefore, how do you stop your kid from watching too much TV? My son now knows he can get cartoons the whole day on TV. It is only so long you can hide that fact from him because once he knows how to keep pressing the controller buttons, he would know there is a cartoon channel just as there is a sports channel. The basic understanding of “sorting”, I guess. You have dramas on the drama series channel, basketball and tennis on the sports channel, music and songs on the MTV channel, stc. So, should I be happy or what that my son understands this basic concept?

Anyway, do you limit how much TV your kid can watch? Even if they are only cartoons? How much TV do you think is too much for a pre-schooler?

I used to buy electronics stuff without doing much research in the past. If I’m in need of a TV, I would simply walk into a shop or two and look around for something that striked my fancy and fit within my budget. For price comparison, maybe I would look around in a third shop and then make my decision.

However, now I realized that buying electronic items require a little bit more research. Most salespeople will only tell you the features and the good thing about what they are selling. But if you want to find out more such as the ease of use or durability, it comes back to doing your own consumer research. The web is a good place to start for that.

Similarly, for price comparison. It is hard walking from shop to shop taking note of the price of the item that you want. Push a few keys and with a few click of the mouse, you have all the price information you need. To me, the web has become the new place to shop for electronic goods indeed.

The recent news about the death of Michael Jackson is certainly a shock to music fans worldwide. I read about the news when I logged into my Yahoo account wanting to check on my emails.

I think for all of us who are in our 20’s and beyond, you can’t really not know who Michael Jackson is. Even if you are not his fan, you will be able to identify him at one glance at his picture. I grew up liking some of his songs but hating the rest. I’m certainly not a big fan and I still cannot understand why some people need to cry when they see him in person or at concerts. It baffles me.

But I have to admit he is an incredible talent. I don’t think any one entertainer has managed to capture so many people’s imagination during their career the way Michael Jackson did. It certainly bring back memories of my teenage years with friends scrimping and saving to buy his albums and posters and learning his dance moves. And for those annual music awards, it was always an anti-climax of sorts because you already know who was going to win.

Even my mom knew who Michael Jackson is. I don’t think women of her generation would know how to appreciate his moonwalk or Thriller album or his look, but mention his name, and she will know what or who we are talking about. Try mentioning Cyndi Lauper or even Madonna to my mom, another two popular celebrities of our generation, and you will most probably get a blank look.

Well, now that the man is dead, I think most people would miss him in their own special way. You may not be his fan at all but go through all his songs, you are bound to find at least one that you would like to listen to now and then or even over and over again. For me, the song “I’ll Be There” comes to mind right now. Perhaps, it is time I go out and hunt for his best collection one of these days. That is, if they have not been sold out.
