Isn’t there something special about wearing your man’s work shirt and tie. Is it the hint of his cologne? The silky tie that can be used to strategically cover up a little bit? He loves you enticingly marking your territory almost as much as you do. Its a special intimacy couples share – and he’ll never tie that tie again without a little smile, thinking about how good it looks on you. I just caught this on the news.  Home births are becoming more popular – at least according to the National Center for Health Statistics.  While only 1 percent of  parents choose a home birth, this is an increase of almost 30 percent in the last decade.

The NCHS study reports that home births have a lower risk profile than hospital births, with fewer births to teenagers or unmarried women, and with fewer preterm, low birth weight, and multiple births. Most home births are attended by midwives. If you have no other risk factors, a midwife can help make a home birth a safe and rewarding experience. The news story quotes Eileen Beard from the American College of Midwives: “At home a woman is free to surround herself with the items and people she loves.”  My own midwife worked closely with me when my own delivery issues forced me to switch to a hospital birth.

I’ve photographed births at hospitals, birthing centers, and at home. Certainly, the environment at home is less stressful, with mom and dad in familiar surroundings and in control of the what was going on. In all environments, I’ve been consistently impressed with the midwives I’ve been in contact with. A doula, a birth photographer (of course), and well-coached family members can also make home birth a great experience.

But if you’ve thought about a home birth, Austin has great resources for building your home birth team.  Get a clean bill of health from your obstetrician. And from my own experience I know how important having a backup plan can be in case your deliver becomes challenging. You would be joining a growing number of parents having their babies at home.

Here is a sneak peek for the beautiful Ms. T.  We met through my friends over at the Get Babied doula collective.  Ms. T. saw  some of my maternity and newborn photo canvases on their walls.  Thank you Get Babied!

Amy Haberland, In Defense Of Bridal Boudoir:

“Women think that boudoir is about getting undressed when in reality it’s about getting dressed. You’re getting ready to show your best self. You may start with a long hot bath. Next comes hair and makeup. Next comes the “lingerie” which is just a fancy word for bra and panties. And what I tell women is to pick something really comfy to put on next like sweats. You don’t want to feel like you are peeling out of your clothes after a long hard day at the office. Instead when you come to your shoot, you slip off your sweats to reveal the true beauty concealed inside.”

She really hits the nail when she says “really it’s for any woman at any time.”  While bridal boudoir is certainly a growing trend – and I’ve done  several sessions for brides guaranteed to be memorable for the groom lucky enough to receive that album as a wedding gift – boudoir is not just limited to brides.  Any anniversary – first, fifth, or even your fortieth – is a great time to celebrate being a woman and reminding that special someone in your life how lucky he truly is!

One of my new moms going from belly to baby!  All the green wasn’t that easy, considering we had rain only once during her entire pregnancy!

Only one week away from her due date and a day before her own birthday!  Mrs. R says that this is the best birthday present she could give herself ~ to celebrate the imminent arrival of their fourth child.  Can you guess what she is having?  Hint: the color of her dress & toenail polish should give it away

I could not wait to meet Mr L,  I was fortunate enough to be the only person to know his name prior to his arrival thanks to the adorable momogrammed blanket his parents brought in for his session.  So, of course, when they did come in we had to do a newborn photo with the sticker, “hello, my name is…”  Needless to say, his parents and I thought we were so smart to think of it.  Thanks to mom & dad for bringing your little man to see me!
