Just For Me: Curl Peace Haircare Products Wash Stress Away (AD)

On most days, Liam's hair is as big as his enormous personality. But the past few weeks—maybe even months—have been met with a bit of hair care neglect thanks to a disturbance in our daily routine. Much of our motivation has shrunk in the same way that Liam's hair has. We've had to comb through a lot of tangles, both literally and figuratively.

Much to my surprise, Liam was down for wash day. The idea of a package arriving for him was just the bait needed to get my hands on his hair. I wasn't going to waste one moment <insert evil villain fingers here>.

To be fully transparent, we've tried other brands of hair products before and have sang their praises. That doesn't mean we can't love others; we appreciate each of them for various reasons.

The colors. Imagine having to send someone into the store to pick up an item or two. You'd simply direct them to the blue and green packaging. We love a standout product!

PRICE POINT
There's not breaking the bank with this line. Most items are priced just right with average costs just around $5 and others are a little above that, making them affordable and a great value. Of course it will vary depending on where you make your purchase.

REPRESENTATION
I loved seeing all the #blackgirlmagic and #blackboyjoy on the promotional advertising for this line. Also, as a boy mom, I was excited to see the little guys included in the talk about hair. It is important that our kids learn to love their natural hair, whether it be long, short, curly or straight.

AVAILABILITY
I typed in my zip code and several stores locations popped up on the map. Walmart, Target, Sally and Beauty are some of the locations you can grab Just For Me: Curl Peace. Online merchants like Amazon are plentiful, too. If you want it, chances are you'll be able to find it.

SCENT
What's that smell? It's my hair, of course. Nothing is more refreshing than a head of heavenly-scented hair. The scent wasn't too overpowering for sensitive noses, especially for the little ones. Makes it a delight to snuggle your nose into their hair for a cuddle session. Yummy!

We enjoy being introduced and trying out new products. It gives us the opportunity to be exposed to things we may have never had on our radar. Our favorite products were the Tender Head Detangling Treatment and the Nourishing & Defining Slime Styler. I liked how the THDT loosened up the tangles in the hair before we even got started washing. I liked the consistency and texture of the NDSS. These two items will stick around for our future wash dates because they were the most effective.

If there is one complaint, it would be finding the right combination of products and routine that won't leave Liam's hair with a white residue. Something goes wrong in the drying stage of our haircare process and causes his hair to have white flakes. A bit of patience and research should fix this problem.

When the day comes when he finally decides to take me up on that scissors offer, I'll be right there waiting. And there will be nothing dull about this moment. At the end of the day, Liam's hair doesn't define who he is. Ya'll heard what India Arie said. It's an exclamation point to who he already is. Addition, not subtraction. Black. Boy. Joy.

As I type this, I am simultaneously blowing away virtual dust from the pages of this blog. It's been awhile since I've shared here. Although, I have been micro-blogging through social platforms like Twitter on just about any aspect of my life that seems relevant in that moment.

I always have a lot to say, but not really much at all. My timelines are mainly random rants about current events, the plight (and joys) of motherhood, and shares of things from other users that echo my same sentiments. My words have been willfully lazy and not nearly as reflective of the old me who would attempt to be more rational. Now, whatever fills my head is usually what spills onto the internet.

Yes, I know this shit is forever.

I'm still empathetic and sympathetic. I'm just a little less apologetic, something I should have been a long time ago. I'm about three decades too late, friends. But I will make up for that. Trust me!

My creativity has been halted by raised levels of anxiety, responsibility—and mostly—exhaustion. The occasional doodle session with my little guy or a brainstorming session with my big guy for a school assignment are holding me over for now. But I'm itching for that one thing that will fuel my fire again, a figurative explosion of some sorts. I need to feel the burn of something besides a hot glue gun.

Damn —I miss the old Ke-ye.

My intentions weren't to come here today to get you caught up on my wavering sanity. It was really a heat check, to see if I still had any words in me to fill this tiny piece of space that I carved out for myself years ago. I wanted to see if my head still matched my heart, and vice versa. They do, just not on the same days. I'm okay with this.

What's been holding me hostage for so long is the need to check off all the boxes of some imaginary list of belonging. Being a spectator in this arena of success—in the nosebleed section, might I add—can sometimes leave you feeling like you have to be more than a cheerleader. Like you can't just sit in the stands as a fan of others who are soaring, while you figure out when you'll go from the crowd to the court and join the game. Sometimes sitting on the bench isn't a bad thing either (and neither is an analogy like this when sports have been temporarily stripped from your life over a viral epidemic). My time will come.

I've always challenged my own worth and talent. I tell myself it's a form of self-love and motivation for me to do better. It hasn't worked thus far, so I may have to employ other tactics. For now, I'll have to quiet my subconscious when it dances on my shoulders and whispers in my ear that I'm not enough. I am. Validation be damned!

I can't promise that I'll ever get my head and heart to line up perfectly ever again, or that I'll return to this space frequently with something inspiring or thought-provoking to share. But what I can promise is that I'll always show up for my purpose. Whatever tugs at my heart and/or head will face little to no resistance; I will oblige.

I've lost so many people in my life over the past years that it would be a tragedy if I lost myself, while I'm still living, breathing and able.

Here's to showing up to where we are suppose to be, and most importantly, where we want to be...unapologetically. I see you, shorty.

Marvel Universe Live! Coming to Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax + Giveaway

I'm not the best person to test Marvel trivia on. My only lessons in Marvel come from my youngest son's constant re-enactment of movie scenes or special sequences he choreographs as if he too is a superhero (or villain, depending on his mood). But what I do know is Marvel Universe Live! is coming to Fairfax in a couple of weeks and despite my inexpert attempt at being a fan, I am sure this is show is one I will appreciate attending (thanks to Feld Entertainment for inviting my family and me).

Power Season 4 Premieres Tonight on Starz #PowerPremiere #PowerTV

Que the music – "They say this is a big rich town..." and you know the rest!

Season 4 of 'Power' returns to STARZ tonight at 9 PM (or right now if you start your free trial for the STARZ app.). With Season 3 ending in the shocking arrest Omari Hardwick's character, James "Ghost" St. Patrick, it's sure to keep the anticipation levels high. I knew that Ghost couldn't go undetected forever, but I never expected his arrest would come at the hands of Angela Valdes (Lela Loren), who wore blinders throughout the entire Angie-Ghost love affair. Having already previewed the first episode, I can tell you with certainty that this is going to be an all out war!

A little over two weeks ago, I was invited by the Starz TV family (shout out to XFinity Moms) to attend a Season 4 Premiere Party in Washington, DC at the beautiful Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue. It was a POWERful display of stars as they poured from their cars, into the building and onto the red carpet for interviews with some of the popular media outlets in the area. One by one they made their way down the carpet, donning their best fashion fits.

After an hour of shouts and calls of "over here! Omari! Fifty! Naturi!", we all headed to the theater to watch the Season 4, episode 1 premiere of 'Power'. Before all of the lights went down, there were a few notable speakers who shared their love for the show. The key theme fell on the lines of representation and diversity. Courtney A. Kemp (creator) and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson (executive producer) have taken this show to a new level to maintain its authenticity.

Shot and produced in Brooklyn, New York (where several jobs and economic revenue have been generated), 'Power' attempts to represent diversity in the media. The storytelling, no matter how good or bad the experience, has done a great job of representing real-life for certain areas all over the country. I should note that 'Power' is the number one drama on television in Washington, DC which is part of the reason why the creator chose the district as the backdrop for the premiere party.

For a little under an hour, we sat in our seats often talking back to the movie screen to express our dismay, agreement or shock over the scenes being played out. Then, the episode was over.

Applause filled the room as the end credits rolled and chatter buzzed throughout the theater. Immediate reactions among groups of friends could be heard in every inch of the building. Guests spilled into the lobby of the Newseum where we were greeted with drinks, light refreshments and musical selections from WKYS's own, DJ Quiksilva, on the ones and twos.

After enjoying delightful, passed hors d'oeuvres and signature drinks splashed with 50 Cent endorsed Effen vodka nonetheless, I scanned the room to take in all the energy in the room. I ran into fellow Xfinity Moms bloggers – Mimi Cute Lips, The Domestic Life Stylist and The Style Medic – who looked fabulous, as always.

The 'Power' cast mingled with everyone without hesitation. They stopped to chat, posed for pictures and made themselves available to the fans. I wear my "fangirl" title well. While I'm not extremely over-the-top with my approach, I have no shame when it comes to expressing my love and admiration for the people and/or things. 'Power' is a show that I have followed since it first hit the television screen and I haven't looked back (unless we're talking about watching a marathon). You can imagine my excitement level went through the roof when I saw each character just feet away from me at the reception.

Besides the stars of 'Power', there were local celebrities that dropped by the premiere. The ladies (and gentlemen) of the 'Real Housewives of Potomac', the Washington Wizards' point guard, John Wall and government officials from other states, as well as local.

As noted by U.S. Representative Hakeem Jefferies, "in good television, art imitates life. But with great television, life at times can imitate art and 'Power' is great television. We all draw inspiration from it."

The night was more than the star power and the glitz and glam of it all. It was a real celebration of a television show that aims to connect people from all walks of life through a world that many of us have no clue about. Through their experiences, we as viewers are able to find that one part where we can relate, drawing us in each week and wanting to know more. We become invested in characters and begin to take it all personal.

If you're looking for a great show to watch, I'm not really here to convince you to watch 'Power'. It's more like, "I told you so!"

Final Chance to see Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors at Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC

It is the hottest ticket in town. Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrors at Hirshhorn Museum has proven that the art of hysteria is alive and well. Each Monday since late February, as many as 50,000 hopefuls log onto the Hirshhorn Museum's website to claim 6,000 or less available passes that can go as quickly as one minute. If you do the math, well, this exhibit is nothing short of popular.

Weeks ago, I started setting my phone's alarm to go off just before noon. I sat down at the computer (I prefer this method over the phone) and continuously refreshed the supplied link to free timed passes until the the option to select a date appeared. With a rather flexible schedule, I opted to choose the first available time for two passes. I believe this helped increase my chances of getting passes because I didn't waste a lot of time with selections and I wasn't as specific with my requests. Some weeks I was successful; other weeks not so much. For the favorable attempts at visiting this exhibition, I could barely contain my excitement. I was fortunate enough to get through, not once, but three times (it's possible, people. it really is.). Get this: in the picture above with my son and I standing in front of the pumpkin, I was so eager to visit that I went on the wrong date. I had to wait patiently for 24 hours so that I could return the next day.

I won't rehash the same details that you see flooding the Internet. By now, most of you have read an article on this experience. You've seen thousands of the same pictures posted on various social networks with the tag #InfiniteKusama attached. You've scanned through opinionated updates by both the bummed out, unlucky ticket-seekers and the successfully, persistent ones. You've probably also gained a new appreciation for polka dots and pumpkins. No matter your intrigue level, there is no denying that the cultural phenomenon known as Infinity Mirrors has caused a spike in Google searches on all words associated with it and increased web traffic to the Hirshhorn's site.

Monday, May 1st marks the last chance you will have to visit on dates from May 8th through May 14th. Sadly, May 14th is the final day of this exhibition's run at Hirshhorn Museum. Minutes before noon, log onto the site and familiarize yourself the page. Wait for the link to go live and pray the polka dotted gods are on your side.

The rooms are receiving most of the attention, but there is more to Yayoi Kusama's collection. Sculptures and paintings serve as strategic pauses from beginning to end. Speaking of end, when you reach the infamous white room covered with circle stickers, you have finished your journey through Infinity Mirrors. The Obliteration Room is the highly popular and most photographed portion of the exhibit. It may have something to do with the unrestricted amount of time museum-goers can spend in here (the other rooms allow only 20-30 seconds). This room will leave you feeling bubbly and focusing on the significance of how a dot occupies and contributes to a space. It is a metaphor to how we as humans are each important to the overall composition of the world that we live in.

Besides being the ultimate backdrop for endless selfies to fill my phone's camera roll, Infinity Mirrors served a greater purpose. I was thoroughly introduced to the fascinating world of Yayoi Kusama. My curiosity to research more artists and their creation peaked significantly. I discovered a new world of exploration for my toddler besides the typical visit to the zoo, park or playground. And once again I was reminded just how fortunate I am to live so close to Washington, D.C. with gems such as the Smithsonian museums to visit for free.

If you are not able to get through to secure a free timed pass, remember that artists from all walks of life need your support. Continue to visit museums, attend art shows, discover new talent and even make your own visions come to life.

I've mentioned before how much of a fan my youngest son is of the Monster Jam brand. Liam wakes up looking for his Monster Jam trucks and goes to bed with at least one of them in his hand. We can't even leave the house without his favorite truck (this changes often) in tow. To say that he is obsessed would be an understatement. Take a look some of his collection:

I am still raving about my family's fun night with UniverSoul Circus this past Thursday at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. It's an event that leaves a lasting impression on the attendees and has them talking about it for days and weeks after. I was reminiscing about our last adventure back in 2011, our first time ever attending. It was just like I remembered – fun, fun, fun! If you want to be apart of all the fun, I encourage you to visit UniverSoul Circus before it leaves the DMV area at the end of this month (July 31, 2016). If you need a little convincing on why you, your family and friends MUST attend, here are five reasons to help you with your decision:

1. There is no such thing as a bad seat.
The circus takes place under a tent (big top) and is laid out in the typical circular design, or a "ring". Each act enters the tent and takes center stage. Most of the performers make an effort to visit each side of the ring so that every section can get a piece of the action. There may be a few times when you're viewing the backs of heads (depending on your seat), but this does not take away from the show. Keep seat selection in mind when you are purchasing tickets. Don't be discouraged about sitting too far away or high up. The view is great from mostly everywhere.

2. Crowd participation.
This show belongs to you. Attendees are highly encouraged to get up, dance, perform and become apart of a few of the acts. This is why no two shows are ever the same. The UniverSoul Circus is so original and unpredictable because of this element. Most people are far from shy in this atmosphere, so you will mostly likely see several hands waving in the air, hoping they are chosen to participate. If you have ever wanted to join the circus, now is your chance. Make sure you shine during your moment.

3. Music. Dancing. Music. Did I say, "dancing"?
Who knew that I was going to be partying under the big top? I would have worn my dancing shoes. Before I even made it into the tent, I could hear the music pouring into the air. Upon entering, there was an energy like no other. People were out of their seats, groovin' and having a great time. Most of the dancing was being led by a group of fantastic performers known as Fresh the Clowns (they weren't even creepy). The latest dance crazes were demonstrated and a few classics were played. It was the perfect mixture of old and new. Something for the entire family. Here's a spoiler: Soul Train line!

4. Diversity.
There are acts included in the circus from all over the world. Watch the big screen for more information as the show is being performed. You will be amazed by the amount of diversity that is included in the show. Acts from Trinidad and Tobago, China, USA, South Africa, Italy and a lot more. It literally and figuratively adds an assortment of color. The global awareness of the UniverSoul Circus is amazing and is a common theme throughout the show. Their messaging is very simple, "We are one"!

5. Add-ons. The circus is the main performance, but you will find that there is so much more going on around you. You can ride the elephants or camels (for a fee). You can buy classic circus treats like snocones, popcorn and cotton candy (do not bring any outside food or drink with you). There are several toy options for purchase that help illuminate the big top with their colorful lights. I also love that there is a photographer that comes around to capture a picture of you and your group. You can choose to buy the picture if you want.

I could probably add more items to this list, but I am hoping that you visit UniverSoul Circus and are able to add your own reasons. I am sure that you will have no problem doing so.

You should know that the circus is on the grounds of the National Harbor. You will not miss the big tents upon your arrival. The location is 300 Waterfront Street Oxon Hill, MD 20754. There is parking available on the lot next to the tents. However, I parked in the St. George parking garage across the street from the show. It was a $10 fee. Make sure you plan accordingly for after the show. There will be a lot of traffic leaving at once, so if you don't have patience, try another option. Also, you can use your credit card to pay AT the gate on your way out. It is much easier than waiting at the machine. DO NOT LOSE YOUR TICKET.

Also, the circus starts promptly at the set time. You don't want to miss a single minute. Doors open an hour before the show starts in case you want to arrive early and get in your seats or take in a little of the action. Also, there may be lines of people waiting to get in, so do yourself a favor and arrive early. The show runs for approximately 3 hours, including intermission. I thought that would be a lot for my toddler crew to handle, but they hung in there the entire time and were never bored. Also, my baby nephew even enjoyed it and didn't cry once (he had noise reduction headphones on because it can get a little loud).

Overall, the circus was a blast. Take my word for it. Even better, go see for yourself. Purchase your tickets to UniverSoul Circus now. This is definitely an event for the entire family, from ages 0 to 110.

Almost a year ago, I thought my toddler and I had kicked diapers to the curb. I had successfully, or so I thought I had, trained him to ask and use the potty in just a weeks time. For awhile, he was doing great. There was an occasional accident here and there, but nothing to make me think that he wasn't getting the hang of this no diaper thing.

Then, life happened.

We were always on the go. In the car. In the gym. Hours at a time. Not that it's any excuse to forget my son's potty-training efforts. But I had completely given up on the commitment. It was Mommy who had failed. Yet another thing to add to my enormous list of incomplete parenting.

Potty training is an amazing milestone for toddlers and parents alike, but it can also be stressful. Spring is the time many families kick-off potty training so they are ready for summer fun and then for the start of preschool. Potty training can feel like an overwhelming process, and when minor leaks or accidents occur, it can be a disappointment. Pampers Easy Ups helps makes this journey a little easier by providing better leak protection than the leading competitor.

We decided to do away with diapers and give Pampers Easy Ups a try. I figured this would give my toddler the confidence of wearing underwear while still adding protection from any accidents. It also gave me piece of mind when we were in the car for extended periods of time and did not have a potty break. They served as insurance in a way – not that you wanted to depend on them, but the help was there if necessary.

First, feed the toddlers. This is a great way to get them all to listen to you talk. We went with a delicious meal of Chick-fil-A nuggets and waffles fries, accompanied with Juicy Juice. I also provided some water. I figured the more liquids they consumed, the more pee pee they would produce.

They were more excited about the balloons though.

The attention span of a toddler is not the greatest. I tried to talk to them about what they say when they need to use the potty. They pretty much have that part covered. Hopefully, they will follow through.

I have consumed enough burgers in my lifetime to be ashamed...or not. I should probably be walking around with one of those burger costumes on because that is what I will eventually turn into. My very first Hard Rock Cafe experience was in Miami, Florida back in high school. Let's just say that was a loooonnnnnggg time ago. I just remember the atmosphere being so fun, upbeat and live. I didn't want to leave. But, for whatever reason, it has taken me this long to get back there. That is about to change...tomorrow. Disney Kids Preschool Playdate Brings the Magic of @DisneyWorld to Your Home #spon #DisneyKids

Pixie dust is probably the only thing that can be sprinkled around the house that does not require a vacuum to clean up the mess. In fact, it is a welcomed guest. It brings the most magical experiences whenever it lands in your life. Somehow, smiles are sizable, moods are merrier and laughs are louder in its presence. And the magic of pixie dust is noticeably present on any occasion that involves children. Our Disney Kids Preschool Playdate was graced with the magic of Disney World and helped carve out a moment in the day to celebrate the beauty of play.

As the mother of a toddler, I know that my son requires a lot to hold his attention. He is easily distracted by the tiniest of moments and needs to be entertained to a certain degree to maintain a level of happiness. What this all means is – he needs to have fun with a lot of stuff!

When Disney sent us over a generous package of their goods, I was thrilled to dig in and explore the magic. It felt like Christmas in March as I unboxed all of the goodies and laid them out on the floor to get a better look. Disney sure does know how to cover all the details and make hosting a playdate a breeze, especially for busy families with tight schedules.

March was extremely "mad" and finding the perfect moment to host this event was difficult. So, I made sure to get it in before all the Easter fun so that the children would not be overwhelmed. I made our playdate as simple as possible – food and fun. I've learned that toddlers are never really concerned with details; they like to see the bigger picture. A lot of the stress of party-planning is self-imposed. Do what you can and have fun. I managed to incorporate a few Disney-themed inspirations to help the playdate feel special to the children. At the end of the day, your guests (even the tiniest of ones) will appreciate your efforts.

FOOD
Finger foods are perfect for the little ones. I thought of the classics that most preschoolers enjoy. Using a Mickey Mouse waffle iron (a birthday gift from my cousin), I made the perfect grilled cheese sandwiches. They were quick to prepare, easy to hold in tiny hands and darn cute.

To add a more nutritional element to their meal, I mimicked Minnie Mouse's hair bow (or Mickey Mouse's bowtie) by placing two strawberries with a blueberry center on a popsicle stick.

I also made miniature "pig in a blanket" bites using crescent rolls to wrap around cocktail wieners. It was inspired by the hot dog song that is played during Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I caught myself humming the tune a few times while preparing them.

Special goodies always make any playdate more exciting. The Mickey Mouse Oreos were so simple to make. I just pressed the mini Oreos into the double stuffed Oreos to create the shape. I also filled the provided Disney "Frozen" GLAD bags with popcorn as a snack for later. There were also CARS fruit snacks available to the preschoolers.

Since there were only a few playdate-goers, I was able to use some of the materials provided to embellish a few items. I used the ring from the Walt Disney World Resort Preschool maps to wrap around the bottles of water. This is a trick that I like to use to get the toddlers to notice and desire water more than usual.

Also, if you take a look under their plates, you can see a colorful placemat. I used a square sheet of construction paper and chose different pictures out of a poster book. Then, I each picture onto a square and the children chose which character they wanted.

I don't think I had any complaints. The food was enough to keep this active crew in their seats for a few minutes. It was just enough time to capture pictures of them at the table.

FUN
It's easy to entertain preschoolers (a cardboard box can hold their attention for quite some time). In keeping with the whole simple theme, we played one of the games supplied in the package that was sent by Disney. An over-sized cutout of Mickey's head with a missing smile used similar rules as the classic game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Instead of a tail, I cut a red smile out of construction paper to be pinned onto Mickey's face. The preschooler who came the closest to placing the smile in the correct place became the winner. They were all a little reluctant of the blindfold, but still played along.

The Mickey Mouse cutout was so cute, I thought, "why not turn it into a backdrop for pictures?!" So, I did. I used wrapping paper that was lying around the house to add a pop of color.

Those handy drawstring bags worked perfectly as decor for the back of the chairs at the table. At the end of the playdate, I stuffed all the items from the party (snacks mainly) into the bag to be sent home with the children. Worked like a charm.

The preschoolers attempted to make puppets out of lunch bags. It didn't go so well. It may have been too close to nap time to hold their attention. They did manage to scribble a few designs onto their bags. But, that's as far as it went.

The funny part about entertaining preschoolers is the fact that you can say something as simple as, "Mickey", and they will go nuts over it.
The children wanted so badly to play with bubbles. It was the perfect way to end the playdate just before they all got ready for a nap. A little outdoor air on a pleasantly warm Spring day was most inviting to the tots in the backyard.

Our Disney Kids Preschool Playdate was awesome. I did not go over-the-top with games, decor and food. Instead, I kept it simple and made adjustments that catered to the preschoolers. It's quite similar to planning a vacation at Walt Disney World Resort – you are equipped with the proper tools to help facilitate in the planning of a memorable vacation that works best for your family. This is what makes the Disney brand so personal; there is always an opportunity to individualize your experience. And somehow, the magic always finds a way to appear, creates a ton of memories and never leaves your heart.

Thank you, Disney! Let's hope I can look back on this playdate and say, "remember when we imagined that we were at Disney World?"...as we're on a plane flying to make our dreams come true in sunny Florida. Fingers crossed.

Chick-fil-A Cow Flash Mob Rocks Baltimore to Encourage Families to "Get Mooo-ving" together + {Giveaway} #showusyourmoooves

My bucket list includes, "Participate in a Flash Mob Dance". I have yet to cross it off of said list. I should probably step my game up if I am considering competing with all the cool, fitness fun that took place recently in Baltimore, MD. The Chick-fil-A cows filled Pratt Street, along with 120 dancers, to encourage families to “Get Mooo-ving” together.

Baltimore bystanders were surprised & delighted this weekend when a herd of 23 Chick-fil-A cows marched down Pratt Street in Baltimore. Crossing the street and waving to amazed drivers, the bovine were joined at the Trans America Plaza by 120 parents and children for a dance through the decades to songs like Rockin Robin, the Twist, Staying Alive, Footloose and You Can’t Touch This. The final song, the well known Cupid Shuffle allowed everyone to join in on the fun. The fitness flash mob was part of the debut of the Baltimore Chick-fil-A dancing cows. Their message is to encourage families to “Get Mooo-ving” together.

The flash mob was sponsored by the 36 Baltimore Area Chick-fil-A restaurants. Lisa Scott, Baltimore Area Marketing Director said “Chick-fil-A cares about a healthy lifestyle and is dedicated to providing a balanced menu with lighter options and healthier choices. The new kale & broccolini Superfood Side is a great example. Exercise is also an important part of healthy living and the “Get Mooo-ving” message is a fun way to encourage families to spend time together being active. What is more fun than dancing and who can resist a group of big dancing Chick-fil-A cows? ”

Hey, Dirty Girls! This Run's for YOU. Dirty Girl Mud Run comes to Baltimore on May 14th. {Discount Code}

I feel like I've been running a marathon since becoming a mother. I've been running errands, running around looking for my keys, running after my toddler, running up and down the road to sports practice and doctor office visits, running away from my responsibilities and on some days, I've felt like running away. If you add up the total amount of miles that I've accumulated over the last decade, well, I should be on the couch asleep right now. But, these examples aren't the type of running that challenges me in the way that I want. I want (need) something that is not necessarily required of me to complete, but presents the opportunity for me to follow through on the commitment.

For the last few years, I have been saying that I am going to complete a 5K run. For those of you who are not familiar as to what a 5K run is, the simple answer is: a run that is a little over 3 miles in distance. This is shortest run that one can participate in, out of all the many runs and races that are offered. It's a good place to start if you aren't an advanced runner or want to get your feet wet (and sweaty...ha) into the racing world (check out a few races over on Pursuit of it All to get an idea). A 5K is also a great way to spend time with friends and family to create memories. I also hear there is a great amount of support from strangers in this whole running/racing world. I'm here for it all!

I'm happy to announce that I will be participating in my first (gasp) 5K run – Dirty Girl Mud Run. I know for some of you this is hilarious because you have a shelf full of medals and trophies from the gazillion races that you've participated in. But for me, this is an accomplishment. I have to start somewhere. And for someone who despises running – I mean I HATE running– I am already proud that I have even entertained the thought of registering for this event. I've already won in a way.

I think that I am most excited to complete this run with friends. Since sharing online, I've had a few of them say that they would like to join in on the fun. I think it would be great to have an entire team of the people that I love working together towards one common goal. This is what Dirty Girl Mud run is all about – inspiration and empowerment. I also know that there will be a few laughs along the way. My cousin even reminded me that the mud will serve as a great conditioner for our hair. You know us black women don't play when it comes to messing up our hair (or so they say). So, this is serious business here, people.

Disney's Animated Series "The Lion Guard" Premieres "Follow That Hippo!" Episode on Friday, March 18th + My Interview with Dusan Brown

Most days, I feel like my life is one, big animation. It's filled with colorful characters (my children), various levels of liveliness (toddler tantrums & a teen talking back), endless adventures (on the road...again) and a few exaggerated moments (drama for your mama). If you were to throw in a well-written script, my family and I could provide you a bit of must-see television.

But for now, we'll just stick to watching all of the other wonderful programming that takes over our TV screen for several hours each day (don't go all judgmental on me). And we all know that having a toddler in the house most likely means that most of what we view is animation. I don't mind though; animated series make me feel a little lighter during the day. Thank goodness for shows like, "The Lion Guard", on Disney Junior (and Disney Channel) that bring a bit of nostalgia from my adolescence and teach valuable lessons to Liam about teamwork, community and diversity.

"The Lion Guard" continues the epic storytelling of Disney's "The Lion King" and follows the adventures of Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, and his diverse group of friends as they unite to protect the Pride Lands. They are: Bunga, a fearless honey badger; Fuli, a confident cheetah; Beshte, a friendly and good-spirited hippo; and Ono, an intellectual regret. Together, Kion and his friends make up the Pride Lands' fiercest, bravest, fastest, strongest and keenest of sight."

When I discovered that "The Lion Guard" would become an animated series I was thrilled. I have so many pleasant memories of the original movie dating back to 1994. I was excited for the opportunity to relive this classic with my toddler and watch his reaction to the characters, colors and music. What really solidified my elation for this series was the discovery that one of our favorite actors from another animated series, Dusan Brown, was going to be the voice of Beshte the hippo.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Dusan a few weeks ago. His energy was off the charts and his passion for the art of acting came through in his words. Here is what went down when we spoke:

Me: What does your name mean?

Dusan: My name, Dusan, means 'God is my judge' and my middle name is Khalil, which means 'friend'. It's Swahili.

**I should note the significance of this. Each episode of "The Lion Guard" includes Swahili words and phrases. What an awesome connection to have as an actor working on a show that shares the same meaningfulness of words as your birth name.

Me: So, your character on "The Lion Guard", Beshte, he's known to be friendly and good natured and friends with everyone, that's how it was describe. Does that compare to your personality in real life?

Dusan: Oh yes! It really does because Beshte in the Pride Lands he's saying 'hello' to everybody, everybody's saying 'hello' to him. And when I go to school, I'm saying 'hello' to everybody and everybody's saying 'hello' to me. So, it's like I'm really Beshte in a way. And I was also class president, so it just shows that I'm with everybody and everybody's with me.

Me: So, I was curious. The original "The Lion King" movie came out in '94 and I know that you're nowhere near that age, so I was wondering, how were you introduced to the original "The Lion King"? Was it just something that you just watched?

Dusan: Well, the original "The Lion King" was shown to me by my parents when I was much younger. After that, they went to go and take me to the play and after I saw the play I had asked my parents. I said, "hey guys, I actually want to play young Simba." So, a few months later, I actually ended up auditioning for "The Lion King" and I ended up being young Simba. So, for me, booking this job and being Beshte is like another part of my life all connected together. And it's all connected to my family.

Me: That's awesome that you saw the movie, said that you wanted to be Simba and then right after that, you became apart of what you wanted to be, what your dream was. So, that's awesome! So, I'll finish with, what is your dream role and who would you love to work with?

Dusan: Okay, my dream role would be like a very, very expensive movie because I would want to work with Denzel Washington. I would want to work with Kevin Hart. I would want to work with Jamie Foxx. I would want to work with Samuel L. And this is all in like one, huge movie. But, it's like an action movie with superheros and it's going to be like Marvel.

Me: Okay, I feel like that could probably happen with your enthusiasm.

And that's where we ended it (for the sake of time). I'm sure that Dusan would have been ready for any question that I presented him with. I was blown away by how quickly he tackled the questions and dove right in. He speaks with conviction. I can only imagine how much energy fills the room when he goes on an audition. If I were a casting director, I would easily remember him once he left the room. His presence is huge and I felt that just from being on the phone with him.

Interviewing Dusan gave me a new appreciation for his character when I watch "The Lion Guard" with Liam. We make certain to tune in whenever there is an episode on the television. In fact, Liam insists that I watch past episodes on the nights where he is having trouble sleeping. He sings along to all the catchy songs. I even find myself getting into the groove.

I am also drawn to this character because I feel as though my children can relate and/or aspire to follow their dreams as black boys. It warms my heart to know that the voice behind some of Liam's favorite animated characters belongs to a young man that looks like him. This is major for us and helps retain us as fans of the show.

This Friday, March 18th, "The Lion Guard" will premiere a brand new episode titled, "Follow that Hippo!" In this episode, "Beshte rescues a young elephant that idolizes him after he wanders into danger". Here is a clip from this episode and a little bit of singing from Dusan Brown for your pleasure:

Review: Monster Jam with the Fam at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD

Liam conquered his first Monster Jam show at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD on Friday night. His anticipation grew with every day that neared the scheduled date. Every sentence that he spoke either ended or began with the words, "monster truck". I am happy to report that the show did not disappoint and Liam is now saying, "I love monster trucks!" Well, good for you, son.

My family and I headed to Baltimore on a chilly Friday night. The show was scheduled to start at 7:30 PM. I was amazed that our almost hour drive to the arena was a breeze; we were able to get there in no time, all while Liam slept peacefully in his car seat. I was excited to get there and begin our adventure.

We parked at the garage directly across from Royal Farms Arena on Baltimore Street (201 W Baltimore St, Baltimore, MD 21201). I have been to my fair amount of shows at the arena, so I knew that this location for parking worked best for us and that the cost would be $20 ( My cousin who lives near New York said that this price to park is a steal compared to their arenas. Oh, okay.) You will pay the attendant at the gate when you arrive, just keep your ticket in side the car and hand it back to them when you exit. The garage fills up quickly and the closer you arrive to showtime, the higher up in levels you will have to drive. Make sure you back into your parking space so that you can exit more quickly and easily when the show is over.

The walk to the arena from the garage is only a few minutes. There is usually a vendor on the corner by the street light who offers to sell items that compliment whatever show is inside. I'm not suggesting that you purchase your items from them, but for this particular show, they were selling earplugs for cheaper than inside. If my memory serves me correctly, outside prices were $1 for each set and inside prices were $2 each. Not much of a difference.

As soon as we entered the arena, we could hear the roaring of the monster trucks engines. There was excitement all around. Liam was slowly coming out of his nap, but became completely alert when he heard all the noises inside. He shouted, "monster trucks" and started pointing in the direction that he wanted to go. Almost as if to say, "get me to all the action, now!"

We had awesome seats – section 112. At these particular events, the lower levels are taped off, covered and not available for seating. They are way too close for guests to sit there. We were a bit taken aback by the noise level when we first sat in our seats.

A couple of weeks before the show, I purchased Liam a pair of Snug Safe n Sound Kid Earmuffs. They canceled some of the noise out, but we eventually when to the concession stand to purchase earplugs for the entire family. We also moved up to the 300s section in the arena. This is not technically allowed at the show (please sit in your correct seats), especially ones that are sold out, but the attendant at the door was very accommodating and allowed up to do so. It was perfection.

This brings me to another suggestion about seating. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a bad seat at a Monster Jam show. This particular arena is smaller in size, so you will see a great deal of action from any angle. It just depends on what type of experience you want (and how many great photos or videos you want to capture). We were just as excited to sit high as we were to sit low. You can decide what works for your group based on pricing, too. Tickets for the Monster Jam show can be purchased here.

The arena is normally a bit cool. I don't know if this is a requirement for the trucks to perform at their best or not. I do know that the chill temperatures help ease the smell of fumes that are emitted into the air. Dress in layers, so that if it does warm up (from all the dancing and jumping up that takes place) you can remove them accordingly. Also, dress comfortably. You'll be sitting for most of the show and will also be jumping up and moving around in your seat to follow the excitement.

Monster Jam shows are to the point. There are events lined up for each truck to participate in. After their performance, they are judge accordingly. The scores help determine a winner and sometimes the crowds applause can help sway the scores. Make sure you scream loud for your favorite driver and truck. Also, there are several fun giveaways in between each event that will keep you going for the night. All this happens in a quick two or so hours with an intermission of about 15 minutes.

I suggest eating before the show. Not only does it save a few dollars, it also helps everyone concentrate on the monster trucks and not a growling stomach. We did get the boys an order of nachos to share. Always expect to pay a little more for concessions at events, including the workers who walk around with sno-cones, cotton candy and other items to entice your little ones. Be ready for negotiations with your toddlers who will most likely have a fit if they can't get an item. We left before I had a chance to get Liam a die-cast car. They were priced at $10 a piece and are a great piece of memorabilia to take home.

Liam is in love with fan-favorite, Grave Digger. He recognized the truck as soon as it entered the arena and his little eyes lit up. I was so excited to see him be excited. He watches videos every day of Monster Jam, so he has a pretty good idea of what each truck is. He even named a few when they drove in. It was so cute.

I loved seeing the monster truck, Zombie and was intrigued to find out that it's driver, Bari Musawwir, is the first African-American drive for Monster Jam. It made us instant fans and he actually put on a great show.

Monster Jam is for the entire family. It's an event that everyone will enjoy. Just keep in mind that the arena can be loud, so make sure the people attending with you can handle that aspect. I would suggest that everyone attend at least one show in their lifetime. We have been several times over the past years and each time we notice something different.

Royal Farms Arena will host it's last show on Sunday, February 28th at 2 PM. Check to see if tickets are available to purchase. Also, be on the lookout for Monster Jam to return to your area.

Monster Jam Returning to Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD on Feb. 26-28 + Giveaway ~ CLOSED

The other day, I discovered Liam in the closet. It's his go-to spot when he is trying to mask the misjudgment of a toddler. His eyes always widen as I yank open the door, uncover his mischief and beg the question, "what are you doing?!" Somehow, he always finds a way to swiftly maneuver around me and seek refuge behind a wall, a pillow or anything that creates space between him and my scolding. I can't help but shake my head when I reveal what he has done.

Here's what I exposed recently:

I can only assume that Liam was trying to re-create a scene from one of the many Monster Jam videos the he watches daily on YouTube. He was clever enough to dump flour onto the floor to mimic the dirt piles covering the floors in the arena. He then preceded to run his monster truck back and forth through the flour so that the tires would leave a mark. And for added accuracy, he destroyed one of his smaller, die-cast monster truck's tires just like the one in the video that lost one of theirs.

I can't say that I am mad at his attempt to simulate the atmosphere of a Monster Jam show. He's pretty creative, excited and obsessed (he sleeps with his trucks) when it comes to monster trucks. Check out his reaction when I asked him if he wanted to go to Monster Jam:

It's kind of like déjà vu– Kaden, my oldest son, shared the same intensity about monster trucks. We have even attended our fair share of Monster Jam shows in the past thanks to Feld Entertainment. Here we are in 2011 at one of the events:

"I love you much, Mommy."

Liam's words flowed gently through my ears, but hit my heart heavily like a bat to a ball. The thought of hearing him speak such tenderness left me feeling both joyful and heartbroken.

I projected the years ahead and envisioned my once wee boy pulling away from my firm grip on his cushy hand at the playground. I would watch anxiously from a neutral location – far enough away for freedom, close enough for assistance – as he climbed the colorful, metal stairs that welcomed him on an adventure.

Occasionally, he would turn around to make certain that I was still a spectator in his world. My intense waving and excitement-filled face was just a cover-up for the nerves that continued to creep into the pit of my stomach.

Don't fall!
Be careful!
Slow down!
Watch out!

The panic was all consuming, causing me to scantily observe the delight that rested playfully in his movement.

He ran.
Jumped.
Wiggled.
Fell.
Walked.
Jogged.
Hopped.

All with the sole objective of having fun.

He succeeded greatly. I, on the other hand, needed a bit of loosening up.

We were at opposite ends of playground endeavors. I wanted him to pull back; he wanted to move full speed ahead. His imaginary harness was in the form of my presence. As long as he could see me alongside his actions, there was no risk too big or small to conquer.

Eventually, I would join him as he began to flirt with vulnerability.

A too tall sliding board.
A steep rock climbing wall.
A speedy merry-go-round.

Mama had her limits.

But for some reason, I felt like limits were just obstacles put into place to curb the curiosity of humans.

What if we all stepped outside of these limits – however much desired – and explored the possibilities?

How is it that we can't live like children and rest on the belief that someone will be there to harness our risk-taking?

Liam's independence would be a direct reflection of the both of us making an attempt to do just that. The more I let him go, the more I would grow...as a parent and as a person.

Suddenly, I felt relieved.

Life does and will move forward. There is no way to make it stop. Continuation does not mean you have to leave behind the life you once had. Bring along the parts that you want to include.

"Inside the Teen Brain: Is There an App for That?" Stop Medicine Abuse Forum in Washington, DC #StopMedAbuse

"I'll just need your driver's license," asked the cashier behind the counter at the local pharmacy. This was after I had been browsing each aisle like a mad-woman, all while coughing up what felt like my entire insides. A terrible cold had finally caught up with me. But, I was determine to win this temporary battle by taking a simple over-the-counter cough medicine. As a Mom, I can rarely afford to be "down". This would have to do for now. So, I was directed to the register to retrieve my item. Cough syrup was now being housed behind the counter.

"I'm sorry. I don't understand. You need my driver's license in order for me to purchase cough medicine? That's weird!" I scratched my head, searched through my wallet for my identification, then handed it over reluctantly. Either I was extremely exhausted and making this all up in my head, or, I was completely out-of-the-loop over new rules surrounding the purchase of cough medicine.

As it turns out, it was the latter.

"Yeah. We have to make sure the person buying the cough medicine is not a minor and is eighteen or older. It's a new thing now; teens are using it to get high. So, we have to treat the sale of cough medicine like buying cigarettes. It's a safety thing. Sorry for the inconvenience, ma'am."

And just like that, I was schooled. I was shocked to find out that this was a new trend among teens. I was too busy worrying about how long my son had been gaming to even consider this as an issue. Of course, this was a few years ago, at a time when my oldest son was much younger and the concern over cough medicine abuse was irrelevant to our family. But, I knew that eventually my son would reach the age where peer pressure who rear its ugly head and present undesirable scenarios in his life. I had so much to learn about this topic. So, I did.

About a month ago, I attended a forum in Washington, DC titled, "Inside the Teen Brain: Is There An App for That?". It was the perfect introduction to October's National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month and promotion of prevention efforts by organizations such as Consumer Healthcare Products Association's (CHPA) Stop Medicine Abuse, Community Anti-Drug Coalition Institute (CADA) , Tribal Worldwide and Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. For a parent such as myself who just knew the surface of the problem but wanted to dig deeper, I was rather impressed with the information that was presented by the panelists, especially Childhood and Adolescent Therapist, Darby Fox. Here is what you need to know to join the fight in preventing OTC cough medicine abuse:

First, what is being abused? It will be quite hard to prevent the abuse if you do not recognize the product. I was surprised to learn that teens are using simple over-the-counter cough medicine containing dextromethorphan (DXM), an ingredient that is found in most OTC cough medicines and is safe when used correctly to reduce coughs. When taken in excess, like up to 25 times more than the recommended dosage as reported by some teens, DXM has the ability to intoxicate. Several side effects include nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, lack of motor control and distortions. Startling statistic from various studies suggest that "1 in 30 teens have abused cough medicine to get high, and one in 3 teens in grades 9-12 knows someone who has abused cough medicine to get high".

So, how did this become a "thing" and where are teens getting their information from to participate in such abuse? If you take a look at this infographic, you can see that one of the main sources of information in the Internet and other teens. We all know that the answer to just about any question is at the tip of our fingertips. With the abundance of computer and smartphone access, a quick online search can produce results that fuel the start of cough medicine abuse. That is why it is important to constantly monitor the activity of your child's online usage.

Look for keyword searches like, "What is it like?" and "How do I do it?" when pertaining to DXM, especially around back-to-school time and the return from breaks for the holiday in January and February. Be sure to check all social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube where teens are more likely to "open up more" than they would with their parent(s). **As a blogger, I have a slight advantage because I am constantly online and able to see most of my teen's interactions.**

Even more accessible to teens are the people that they see on daily basis. Friends and peers are the most influential when it comes to both positive and negative decision-making. As listed on number three of the picture to the right, "teens are almost 3 times as likely to trust their friends as a source of information than their family (even their siblings)". This adds to the point that you should always know the people that your child is hanging with because they may become the company that they keep.

Curiosity will often lead to discovery. A teen will go online if they know a friend or have heard about DXM abuse in the news. As a parent, just make sure that your curiosity about your child's online activity is stronger than their desire to attempt this act.

What do you do if you suspect your teen may be abusing cough medicine or has made inquiries about DXM usage? Well, the first step is to have a conversation. This is something that should be taking place on a regular basis anyway. Talking to your teen may be the best form of prevention for most of the problems they face in their adolescence. In approaching your teen to talk about this topic, remember to lose all judgement. Talk with your teen and not at them. Natural, non-lecturing, non-distracting moments are the best time to start the conversation. I am proud to say that I have been talking to my oldest son about drugs for years. We created a fake scenario of someone asking him to use drugs and played our respective roles. We laugh about our little skit now that he's older. But, it has stuck with him. I always find a clever way to talk to him about what is going on at school without being too obvious. Tactics will vary based on your teen because they are individuals who have to be engaged differently. Just remember:

Sometimes we have to get on the level of the teen. What better way to do this than through an app created by DXM Labworks? It is available for free on iTunes and for Android. The premise of the game is for users to get a virtual idea of what abusing cough medicine looks like without actually trying it (thank goodness). There are also other great resources on WhatisDXM.com. Just to make a note, this site has been visited by teens one million times and the app has been downloaded almost 300,000 times. Continued efforts to prevent cough medicine abuse appear to be showing some positive results. For instance, only 26% of teens agree strongly that taking cough medicine to get high is the cool kids thing to do. That is down from the 29% that was recorded in 2011. Also, teens who thought that it was easy to obtain DXM was at 65% in 2010. Since then, the number has gone down to 41%. This shows a few steps in the right direction. A decrease in abuse is always a great motivator to keep the conversation going. Also, continue to provide empowerment opportunities for our youth:

The Results are In: My Walgreens #WellnessTour with the National Urban League Experience #spon

I'm 51 years old. At least that's what my test results from the Walgreens Wellness Tour with National Urban League say. After inputting the numbers for my glucose levels, body composition and blood pressure, the calculations added almost eighteen years onto my life. So, instead of being an active, energetic and healthy 34-year-old mother of two, I am barely hanging on to any ounce of my youth. Sadly enough, I am not at all surprised by the outcome.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, my youngest son, Liam, and I headed to one of the stops scheduled for the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area. This particular location was located in Clinton, Maryland at a senior housing apartment complex called, Clinton Manor. Residents of the complex could easily walk out of the entrance of their building and step up into the bus. But just so you're not confused, the services are available to the public. as long as you are 18 years of age or older.

I entered the wellness bus and was immediately assisted by one of the staff members there – Ashley. Both her smile and personality were inviting, as was the rest of the staff. I welcomed her warm spirit on such a cold, rainy day. She was the perfect person to make a first impression. The staff was accommodating to Liam as well. They kept him occupied while I sat down to receive my tests (this is not apart of their job, but I was appreciated their help).

First up – total cholesterol & glucose testing. This required a simple finger prick as blood was drawn and captured into a tube. The blood was then tested on a machine that gathered results. The glucose test was important for me because diabetes runs in both sides of my family. I couldn't remember if I had anything to eat before taking the test, but that may have altered my results a bit.

The cholesterol test results were also determined from the small blood sample that was taken. This test reveals any excessive amounts of bad cholesterol that may be in your artery walls. This could cause potential blockage and blood flow to your heart, causing a stroke, heart attack and/or heart disease. I'll share my results at the end of this post. Let's just say, I had a rude awakening.

I don't think anyone is ever excited to step on a scale. This scale was pretty fancy. Just by stepping on it, I was able to get results for my complete body composition. Measurements of my body fat, visceral fat, BMI, skeletal muscle, resting metabolism, body age and body weight were all recorded in one take. I expected the numbers that I've received. I've known for quite some time that I am overweight and could stand to shed about twenty pounds. I am definitely making weight loss a priority in the coming weeks, even if it is holiday season. I can't lose anything if I don't gain the strength to start somewhere. And seeing myself in the picture is motivation enough. I don't even recognize this woman.

Blood pressure and I have a love/hate relationship. Most of the time it's great. Then, there are the moments when I am super stressed or nervous and my blood pressure notices. I started having blood pressure difficulties after my first pregnancy back when I was just twenty years old. Both of my pregnancies resulted in early deliveries due to my condition with preeclampsia. As soon as they ended, I would return to normal. But on this particular visit to the wellness tour bus, it was sky-high. I should note that the night before I did not feel too well and went to bed more earlier than usual. I don't know if the anticipation of next day's events cause a spike in my pressure, but I am going to work out a solution with my primary care physician to make sure this was just a one-time occurrence and not a permanent problem.

I was the only one on the wellness tour bus at the time. This made it my tests analysis arrive quickly. Allow yourself at least 20 minutes during your visit to complete the entire process because there may be a few people ahead of you. I met with Ashley to go over my results. She explained briefly what all the numbers meant. For the numbers that were not so favorable, she noted that all of the results work together and would change for the better with a decrease. Long story short – get to fixing your health problems if you want to see satisfying outcomes.

I can't tell you how many times I've read or heard a story where the person expressed how early detection and prevention saved their life. Had they not taken a step in the right direction to see where they were in their health journey, the outcome may have been a bit different. Now that I know my health is not nearly as great as it can be, I am going to make changes in my life to ensure that I am around for awhile longer. I am at risk for a heart attack or stroke at the young age of 34. This is unacceptable. I need to do more for myself...first! The results from this health assessment are just what I needed to make plans with my primary care physician to create a routine that will revive my healthy state.

Besides, I want to be around for my children's milestone, like this little guy getting his driver's license.

Washington Football Team Training Camp is a Must for Fans #RedskinsSocialDay

If you ever wanted to get up-close and personal with your favorite football team, training camp is the way to go! Thanks to Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, Ian and I were able to attend Redskins Social Day at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Virginia last Sunday. We had a great time.

One hundred Redskins fans and "social-ites" were offered the opportunity to experience Skins Camp, VIP style. A special section was reserved for VIP and media. There were tents erected for fans to sit under comfortably, shielded from the sun. These sections were set-up closest to the fields where the Washington Redskins practiced their plays and performed training routines.

There were some fun perks and prizes involved as well. The Redskins Social Day team provided a boxed lunch, unlimited sodas and water, a t-shirt, fun giveaways with awesome prizes and increased access to the players. It was pretty cool to see the team just walk through, right in front of your face. You could literally reach out and touch them (don't try that though).

Ian and I spent most of our time doing a scavenger hunt. Using the Redskins mobile app on our devices (the iPhone app was having difficulty connecting), we were given clues that sent us around the entire park to collect badges. When in close proximity, the app would send a notification that you successfully found the location. Ian found all five, but for some reason his phone would not log them in properly. Bummer. The grand prize for winning this was a signed Pierre Garcon jersey.

Training camp is a real treat. Unlike a football game, the team is more relaxed and playful. They don't have to be so serious and intense. There are moments where you may catch a player dancing on the field, telling a joke, coming over to the crowd to give love or making eye contact with you. If you're lucky enough, like some of the Redskins Social Day participants, you may even receive an autograph from the quarterback or your favorite player. So, bringing your most prized memorabilia is a good idea. They will even pose for pictures. Say "cheese".

August 16th, 2015 was the last practice open to the general public at the Richmond facility. But, there is always next year (Today, fans are enjoying Fan Appreciation Day in Asburn, VA). You can also sign up to receive updates on all things Redskins so that you'll never miss a great event such as this.

Even though this was a day full of football, it was also a day for relationships. I saw so many families, couples, and fans sharing a great experience together. The father and son, whom I was standing next to at one point, looked down at his son and said, "I'm so glad you get to see this". The fan who was got a bit emotional and said, " I never been to nothing like this, man. I'm excited." I also used the day as a way to spend some quality time with my love. It's because of him that I'm a "default Redskins fan". It's more of a supportive thing. But, life is always better when done together. The day, well, it was just perfect!

I would like to add that there are definitely levels to being a fan. It's a big fascinating to see some of the dedication that goes into being a fan of a sports team. It can also be a bit over-the-top when people become possessive or try to outdo one another. My whole thing is – if you're a fan, be a fan of the fans. Stop competing. You're rooting for the same team.

Where the hell have I been?

One would think that I packed up my suitcase, grabbed my passport (the one that I do not own) and jetted off to some exotic location to see what the rest of this world has to offer.

Wishful thinking, huh?

Although that would have been an ideal explanation, there is nothing exciting to report. I've simply been living the simple life. Sorry to disappoint.

I've been hanging around in pajama pants,
checking my social feeds,
eating ice cream in dangerous quantities,
watching ratchet reality television programs,
practicing the art or isolation,
stalking the thredUP site for fashionable finds (here's $20)
distancing myself from negativity,
dying my hair blonde and black within months of each other,
arguing with my teen about his video-gaming,
and conquering the world of potty training with my toddler (Please check out OH CRAP! POTTY TRAINING: Everything Modern Parents Need to Know to Do It Once and Do It Right by Jamie Glowacki. You can thank me later.)

Move right along. There's nothing exciting to see here, folks.

Err, I mean, COME BACK! Things are about to heat back up. It may be a bit lukewarm in the beginning (like the beach water was in Ocean City, MD when we visited in June). But, I promise I won't leave you hanging (as much) like I have in these past few months.

Summer seems to have gotten the best of me. Not a bad problem to have, I guess.

I thought about updating with a post on several occasions. You know the ones that state the obvious about how I haven't posted in awhile, that I'll be back soon and how deeply sorry I am for letting my blog go down the drain? Yeah, that one.

Then, I realized that no one really cares. There are like fifty-million blogs and sites on the Internet to troll. My little piece of the online world would surely not cause any one (or two) of my readers to lose any sleep. Shout-out to you both. Ha!

Speaking of sleep, I have yet to get any. This little toddler of mine has decided I must pay the consequence of being a parent. It can't all be perfect Instagram pictures and worthy Facebook posts from my little guy. I have to work for this motherhood gig.

While I've been missing in action from this particular outlet, I have been making an appearance elsewhere. Are you following me on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Periscope (@keonte), Google +...down the street? I kid, I kid. But I do want you to check me out on the sites that I mentioned. Sometimes it is just easier to do a quick share rather than compose an entire post of rambling (which is where this post is heading).

I have so much stuff to dump on you, I can hardly contain my excitement. You're going to want to sign-up to receive updates to my blog (or at least read one post, then unsubscribe while I wreck my brain trying to figure out why you would do such a thing).

Don't go waiting for some extra awesome announcement about me being invited to take over Harpo studios. My heart would have immediately stopped upon being asked and I would have never made it to this blog to share the news. For now, I'll be slowly working on getting my voice back to the place that has helped me in so many aspects of my life. I may even do some re-arranging and dusting off. Who knows?

Over the past month, SoCozy has been a big part of our daily routine. The products almost felt like an honorary member of the family because we were either mentioning their name, finding SoCozy items all over the house or using the products on hair. Let's just say that we became fans quickly, and not just of the actual products, but of creator Cozy Friedman herself. We even had the chance to meet her at a SoCozy event held in the DC area. Take a look at some of our fun moments together:

The great part about that day was how I put our real-life routine to the test. Before arriving, I washed Liam's hair, did I bit of untangling and sectioned it off to twist. He wore it like this to the event, but I took them out once we arrived by using the SoCozy Detangler + Leave-In Conditioner in Fruity-tutti scent. What Mom do you know that carries a bottle of detangler around in her purse? Hopefully, a lot! You should really pack this great item in your purse/baby bag. Trust me.

The line of SoCozy products are designed to meet several of your little one’s hair care needs. Most of my local Target stores carry SoCozy products – some a little, others a lot – making it easy for me to pick up an item or two whenever I dropped in or needed to replenish. Since the SoCozy products have hit the shelves, I can say that they appear to be selling well. Most times when I visit the hair care section at Target, the product is either low or not available.

I would have to say that our two favorite SoCozy products are from the Cinch collection: Detangler + Leave-In Conditioner in Fruity-tutti scent and 3 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner + Body Wash in Mango-go scent.

The reason I chose these two products was based solely off of the convenience and effectiveness. Whenever one product can provide multiple benefits, I am more willing to purchase it. The 3 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner + Body Wash is pretty self-explanatory. I can shampoo and condition Liam’s hair and wash him up in the tub all with the same product and at one time. This is a parent’s dream to be able to save time and be efficient in doing so.

I am also appreciative of the little things. I like that each product has its own scent, leaving Liam's hair smelling delicious. I find myself sniffing his hair way too long when he is sitting in my lap or cuddled up to me. I am also thankful for the ease at which the detangler sprays because of the clever trigger/spout/handle. It looks professional, comes out effortlessly and is easy to hold. Packaging is just as important.

Liam has curly, natural hair that tends to kink a lot, especially in this Maryland humidity. I like to keep his curls in order and hydrated. So, these are the two products that work best for my little man of color. I did discover that I could only use a tiny bit of Behave Styling Cream Soft Hold in Pear-fection scent and Behave Styling Mousse Medium Hold in Peachy-keen scent to help define his curls a bit (but not too much because it would flake on is damp hair sometimes). We would wash, detangle, twist, untwist, set with a gel or mousse and look adorable after.

Of course Liam cannot wear some of the fancy styles that are showcased on the SoCozy YouTube channel. But, I have a goddaughter is who really into cool hairstyles and I cannot wait to try a few on her hair. I like that each video tells you the products and supplies you will need to achieve the look, and in great detail. Here is one style that I have been eyeing for awhile – the Heart Braid.

I have had an absolute blast testing out all of these awesome SoCozy products and sharing my thoughts with family and friends both online and offline. Catch Cozy Friedman and SoCozy on HSN for the 2-day Summer Beauty Event #AD

We are fans of Cozy and her products. Over the last few weeks, they have been a staple in our haircare routine. This always dreadful event has become somewhat pleasant because we have added yummy-smelling, chemical-free and result-producing products from the SoCozy line.

Just recently, SoCozy sent over their new Wet or Dry Detangling Brush and our favorite product, Detangler + Leave-in conditioner, to give a try. I must admit that it is difficult to find a product that will work equally on all types of hair, especially hair as thick and coarse like Liam's. I will say that I was impressed with the ease at which I was able to get Liam's hair through the bristles. He still complained a bit, but it was not a total meltdown as in recent sessions.

I like that the Detangler Brush is light-weight while I hold it in my hands. I also like the color; I can easily find it on the counter or whenever Liam decides to hide it. I like that the bristles are covered on the tips for added gentleness so that the hair won't snag. The plastic material is durable without being too rough on the hair or scalp. I also think that $9.99 is a great price for an item that will probably be used on a daily basis.

I'm quite sure our experience with SoCozy products is different than most. These products were not specifically created for ethnic hair, so the results will vary from time to time. I do like the detangler for its ability to loosen tangles and knots, all while conditioning Liam's dry hair. Here is a look at how we use the SoCozy Detangler Brush.

Being the mother of two boys, you would think that unmanageable hair would be the least of my worries. I should have more serious "crimes" to solve like girl crushes, excessive dirt-tracking in the house or injuries caused by a daredevil act. While these all fall under the category of things that I have dealt with in my thirteen years of parenting, none have quite matched the mystique surrounding the styling of my boys' hair.

It is tradition in our family for a boy to receive his first haircut at the age of one. It signifies the leaving of babyhood and the welcoming of toddlerhood (and it eliminates the awkward comb-over phase a baby may have gone through for months). Both of my boys never received a haircut on their one year anniversary of life. I am not big on tradition and believe that individuality should be honored at a young age, even if the individual can barely speak (or hold a utensil properly).

My oldest, who is now thirteen years old, did not ask for a haircut until he was six years old. It was a tough moment for me (it's always about Mom) because I had grown to love his curly locs. We often bonded (and fought) over hair sessions on the floor when I would braid and twists his hair for school pictures or an outing. I would have to bribe him with fun treats and some form of animated entertainment so that he would sit there while I combed through tangles and knots. It was probably one of his least fondest childhood memories.

What I didn't know is that I would experience déjà vu nearly 11 years later when my now two year old started growing his hair. 'Cause it was his choice and all. Right?!

I headed to my local Target (four, to be exact) to checkout this new hair care line. I spotted SoCozy on the shelf under the section marked 'Family Hair Care' and marked with a "Kids" divider. There was no mistaken these kid-friendly products from the colorful and fun packaging.

I picked up the bottles to examined it closely to see what made SoCozy products “So Smart, So Safe, So Easy, and So Cool”. Evidently, a lot of people agreed because there were only a few bottles left of the only three products offered at this particular location. I was able to snag the detangler + leave-in conditioner and the 3 in 1 shampoo + conditioner + wash on my first trip.

I was a bit upset about not having the full line of products available at this particular location. Fortunately, I live near a lot of Target stores and I am able to visit various locations when one does not carry a certain item. I looked online at the SoCozy products to see which store carried additional products and was able to find two nearby locations to head to. During that trip, I picked up the conditioner and the styling cream (soft hold)/.

I have four products to give a try. I am always curious to see how well they work on my son's and goddaughter's hair. I think it is important that a product that is deemed "smart" to be effective on ALL types of hair. I am most excited that SoCozy products are safe, effective and completely non-toxic. This is especially important for the combination products that work both on hair and on the body.
