Here are a few ways to make this Thanksgiving more memorable and something worth being thankful for:

Create Thankful Cards – Make a card for each family member that will be your guest for Thanksgiving this year. On each card, write what you love most about them, and why you are thankful for them.

Mini family memory books – Collect family pictures, if you don’t have many pictures, take them to a local copier and have extra prints made. Purchase (or if you are crafty, you can make them too) mini scrapbooks or memory books at your local scrapbook supply store, together with stickers, markers and various scrapbook supplies. Make a mini family scrapbook, using one picture per page. Write what you are thankful for, in relation to each family member, on their designated pages. On Thanksgiving Day, don’t forget to give a copy of your mini family scrapbooks to each family member as a memento.

Assemble Family Recipe books – A few days before Thanksgiving, come up with a list of each family member. Next to their name, make a note of their best dish. Contact these people and ask for a copy of that recipe, and perhaps one or two of their own favorites that they do not mind sharing. When you have all the recipes ready, compile them into a booklet and print them, using your computer and printer. (You can also use professional services, if you like, to make a longer-lasting recipe book.) When your guests arrive for your Thanksgiving dinner, make sure to give them a copy of your special family recipe book.

Beautify Your Yard with Autumn Collage

This is an awesome way to get kids involved in making your front lawn beautiful this fall season. It is not that difficult. Some materials you may want to use are: hay bales, pumpkins (all sizes), scarecrows, cornucopias … think of items that relate to fall. Stack your hay bales to create a backdrop. Then, put the scarecrow in the middle of the stack. You can then continue to add complimentary fall accessories like cornucopias, corn stacks, etc.

Happy Autumn Cards

Supply each kid with markers, paper, glue, glitter, stickers, etc. Let them make several autumn cards and write a special message on the inside of each one. After any wet appliques are dried, gather the cards and take them to your local nursing home to distribute among patients.

Here are some tips, some of which have been recommended by the National Safety Council.

* Ensure a parent or guardian accompanies the kids when they go out trick-or-treating.
* If you have older kids who are going out with friends, instruct them to stay within the neighborhood, and to walk along a well lit route.
* Do not enter homes or apartments without adult supervision.
* Only visit those homes in which you know the families.
* Remind them to look both ways when they cross the street. Kids who wear dark clothing are especially vulnerable to drivers who cannot see them at night.
* If your child is going out with a group of other children, ensure that his or her name, address, and telephone number is tucked inside his or her pocket. This is just in case they get separated from the group.
* Walk; do not run, from house to house.
* Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.
* Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic if there are no sidewalks.
* Do not cross yards and lawns where they cannot see objects or come across uneven terrain can cause them to fall.
* Don’t accept any rides from strangers or talk to them either.
* Always know where you are.
* Avoid pets you don’t know.
* Treat bags carried by youngsters should be light-colored or trimmed with reflective tape if children are allowed out after dark.
* Masks can sometimes obstruct a child’s vision. If masks are worn, they should have nose and mouth openings and large eye holes.
* Give your kids a time when they should return home.
* Advise your kids not to eat any treat before they come home.
* After your kids bring home their treats, inspect everything in their treat bag.
* Wash fruit and slice into small pieces.
* Check for any holes in candy or candy bars or partially open candies. Throw out baked goods that are homemade, unless you know the origin.
* When in doubt, throw it out.
