Goodbye from momo

The momo Car-Sharing project - more options for energy efficient mobility through Car-Sharing has now come to an end after three successful years. During the entire project, momo worked intensively on various aspects of modern Car-Sharing services. An overview of today’s State-of-the-Art of European Car-Sharing was given, new services were inaugurated, workshops were held and Car-Sharing was promoted all over Europe and beyond. Recommendations to take Car-Sharing a serious supplement to public transport are expressed in the project’s final political document: the momorandum. The momorandum describes the political settings required on European level for exploiting the potential of Car-Sharing for European cities: reclaiming the space of 600,000 cars!

All results - and there are a many - are available on the momo DVD, which can be obtained by contacting us over the contact form on this website. The DVD presents not only the results, but also good practices and contains many media examples (pictures, videos, etc).

This website will stay online as it is in November 2011 some time and will serve as a good source for information on and from the momo project. The momo-coordinator can be reached via this site and is happy to react upon your requests.

Goodbye from momo and looking forward to hearing from you!

momorandum goes Westminster

The momo Car-Sharing experience and the example of the Bremen Car-Sharing Action Plan were presented in the House of Commons by Michael Glotz-Richter.
The ‘All-Party Parliamentary Group on Car Clubs and Car-Sharing’ met on 1 November to discuss a better political and practical support for Car-Sharing in the UK. Member of Parliament Jason McCartney chaired the meeting in the impressive building of Westminster.

In his introductory presentation, Michael Glotz-Richter presented parking problems as a mismatch of available street space and the number of cars – as common in UK cities as well as in other European cities. The momo Car-Sharing video spots served to introduce the basic principles of Car-Sharing. The momo WP2 overview about the European Car-Sharing development showed impressively the leading role of London – and at the same time Bremen could present how to support Car-Sharing also in mid-sized cities. The momorandum showed the remarkable potential of Car-Sharing to reduce the number of cars through Car/Sharing / improving the urban environment in a very efficient way.
Chas Ball - Chief Executive of Carplus - presented the potential of Car-Sharing for the UK for a more mainstream role in meeting urban mobility needs and working alongside public transport. Carplus is an environmental NGO to promote responsible car use and alternatives to car ownership

Final conference of EU project momo Car-Sharing in Brussels

Final conference of EU project momo Car-Sharing in Brussels

About 150 Car-Sharing experts and decision makers from politics and transport providers from more than 20 countries met in Brussels on 15th Sep 2011 to learn more about Car-Sharing in its various forms and states and to discuss the core results of EU project 'momo Car-Sharing’. momo is a demonstration project supported by the European Union through the Intelligent Energy Europe programme and stands for ’more options for energy efficient mobility through Car-Sharing’. 13 partners from eight European countries worked together for three years to improve Car-Sharing services and its energy efficiency, establish new Car-Sharing operators and locations, transfer best practices, and increase awareness about this sustainable mobility service.

“Car-Sharing is the only proven offer which reduces the number of cars in the streets by using cars”, says Michael Glotz-Richter with a smile. He is coordinator of momo and head of section “Sustainable Mobility” at the Senator for Environment, Construction and Transport in Bremen, Germany. “Sharing instead of owning is the simple idea, and to make it easy and comfortable to users, Car-Sharing operators developed highly sophisticated technologies and booking software”, Glotz-Richter continues. “The message is simple: Don’t invent the wheel twice, build on the existing experience and start to improve the quality of life in cities now – worldwide. This helps to regain street space currently used by 600,000 cars in Europe, because that’s the potential we have.“ he summarizes the results.

Since late eighties Car-Sharing has become a market not only in Europe and North America but also in Asia and it is continuously growing. To reach the potential of Car-Sharers especially in cities and contribute essentially to energy efficiency and more livable cities needs intensive awareness raising campaigns. So, spreading the word was one of the core successes of momo and the final conference. All attendees received the momo DVD which gives a comprehensive overview about Car-Sharing and offers numerous videos and clever adverts to stimulate followers.

EU Energy Minister speaks on the occasion of the momo final conference

You can obtain a copy of the momo project DVD from the momo co-ordination.
momo workshop at EU Sustainable Energy Week

During this year's EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), the momo consortium
organised a workshop at the office of the Representation of the Free Hanseatic
City of Bremen to the EU.

Christof Marx, project officer from the Executive Agency for Competitiveness
and Innovation (EACI) summarised why momo and Car-Sharing can play an important
role for more energy efficient developments in Europe.

The goal of the workshop on 13 April 11 was to highlight some best practice
examples from the transnational activities within momo. David van Kesteren
(Taxistop, Belgium) and Michael Frömming (Bremen City Council, Germany)
presented some facts and figures about local Car-Sharing developments and key
factors in their successful implementation. Graham Lightfoot (GoCar CarSharing
Limited, Ireland) presented the range of challenges involved in starting up on a
green field site and how barriers and obstacles can be overcome.

Car-Sharing presented by momo coordinator on UITP World Congress in Dubai

About 2,000 participants from all continents gathered in Dubai for the
biannual UITP World Congress to discuss questions of public transport and
sustainable mobility. As UITP has set the target to double the share of public
transport by 2025, Car-Sharing has its role.

Michael Glotz-Richter from the momo project coordination presented
Car-Sharing in the conference. The supplementary role to public transport was of
big interest and as well the fact that high quality Car-Sharing can substitute
private cars in cities and thus reduce parking needs. With these points,
Car-Sharing was very innovative to many participants of the conference.

You can find more information about this conference on the UITP website: <A

Car Sharing is operational in Athens

As a new service in the over-populated and traffic digested city, providing a
number of benefits which are exploited by European citizens in cities where
car-sharing is operational.

CRES has a contract with CAPITAL RENT-A-CAR with main office at the centre of
Athens, close to Syntagma square and its second office at Thessaloniki, North
Greece. The company operates about 150 vehicles, various models of the Ford
brand; about half of them operate as rental vehicles (on daily basis) and the
other half as leasing vehicles. The Company clearly sees a potential for further
growth, as car-sharing covers a niche section regarding mobility mix.
Car-Sharing implementation of the Pilot Scheme will run until the end of June
and then it may continue at a commercial level.

Service cost : 2.20 € per hour and 0.40 € per km driven. There is no
subscription charge, price includes insurance and fuel.

The service operates from 08:00 in the morning to 21:00 at night and for 365
days per year. There is an option for overnight service.

Car-Sharing in housing developments

Bond Beter Leefmilieu and Cambio Belgium have been cooperating with Autopia
and Bostoen in a housing development project. The Belgian construction company
builds new flats and apartments. Anyone who buys a lot there participates
automatically in the Car-Sharing scheme there.

What's so special about this new cooperation is not only the focus on and the
benefits of Car-Sharing in terms of less parking space required and more green
space available to the residents, but the company Bostoen is also giving active
start-up help as it covers for the Car-Sharing costs in the first year. That
means the cars and the necessary technical equipment is purchased by Bostoen and
then after the first year the Car-Sharing provider takes over and runs the

Momo Car-Sharing worksghop during the Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels

Between 11 and 15 April 2011 hundreds of events organised in all parts of
Europe will show, promote, discuss and celebrate energy efficiency and renewable
energy.

The momo consortium invites to a Car-Sharing workshop on 13th April in
Brussels. Why does Car-Sharing play an important role for a more energy
efficient mobility in urban areas? What are challenges and obstacles to promote
a more energy efficient mobility?

Two momo partners will demonstrate the experiences in these field during the
session. Our Belgian partner taxistop is very well known for the best practice
experiences in Car-Sharing activities. The Irish partner CarSharing Limited will
explain the framework conditions for a 'newcomer' in the field of Car-Sharing.

European Commission released brochure on urban mobility

A snapshot of urban transport research with reference to Bremen
Car-Sharing

The European Commission’s General Directorate for Research has published in
January 2011 the brochure “Keeping Europe’s cities on the move - Meeting the
mobility challenge”. The brochure presents various approaches which are
politically promoted and funded in the research arena of the European
Commission. Of course, Car-Sharing plays a role in that collection. The City of
Bremen serves as a reference case with its ambitious municipal “Car-Sharing
Action Plan” (a deliverable within the momo project) – being the first of its
kind in Europe.

Michael Glotz-Richter (City of Bremen) is quoted in the brochure:
“Car-Sharing is a unique and efficient element to reduce the number of cars in
the cities and to reclaim street space for a better urban environment – and at
the same time even improve transport options for the citizens”. The leaflet
presents his estimation of the potential for European cities - to replace more
than 500,000 cars – being a huge asset of street space to convert from parking
space into liveable space.

The momo project clearly shows ways how to access this potential - but as
well how much more support may be needed to start up successfully especially in
the cities of central Europe.

You can order the 44-page brochure “Keeping Europe's cities on the move
EU-funded research to ensure urban mobility” - online at the EC’s publication
office: <A

Better Cooperation between Public Transport and CarSharing

In Bremen 75 Experts from Public Transportation (PT) companies have
discussed modern mobility covenants

Commuting by tramway and getting as a bonus for one’s subscription a car
every now and then – how could that possibly work? On 20 January, 75 delegates
gathered in Bremen to discuss modern joint offers by PT and CarSharing. The
delegates came from local authorities and short distance PT companies. The
meeting had been arranged by the Association CarSharing (bcs), the Bremen
Senator for Environment, Housing, Transport and Europe, the Federation of German
Transportation Companies (VDV), and the German Association of Cities and Towns.

The contributors presented some practical examples of already existent
cooperation in the German cities of Bielefeld (MoBiel), Mainz („mainzigartig
mobil“), and Osnabrueck. The most extensive and successful cooperation however
was introduced by Didier Dumont from the Brussels PT company STIB. They are in
fact shareholder of the CarSharing company and promote their mutual business by
means of intensive advertisement. They indicate CarSharing Stations at bus stops
as well as in print outs and on their homepage. Although the Brussels
cooperation began only in 2003 it raised the number of customers up to 6,000
within seven years. PT subscribers hold an recently introduced electronic ticket
„MoBiB“ that is used as well as key for the CarSharing vehicles. Utilisation of
PT with CarSharing customers has risen by 26 percent and at the same time 21
percent of the Brussels customers sold their car.

Michael Glotz-Richter of the Bremen Senator for Environment, Housing,
Transport and Europe highlighted how urban development can benefit from the
above mentioned cooperation. In Bremen, all parties approved of a CarSharing
campaign which aims at a minimum of 20,000 customers until 2020. This could then
reduce the demand for parking places by 4,000 to 6,000 cars.

Participants of the meeting postulated that interaction between PT and
CarSharing should be made easy for their common customers. This could be
realized by e. g. just one ticket for PT and CarSharing or one monthly bill for
all mobility services. For up to 10,000 or 12,000 kilometers per year this
combined mobility earns a cost advantage as experience teaches.

The participants agreed that they can fulfill most of their customers’ needs
for mobility by cooperating and thus contribute to reducing environmental and
traffic problems of their cities. T

he meeting in Bremen is part of the European project momo carSharing. 13
partners from 8 European countries are working together to contribute to energy
efficient mobility in the city of the future.

Open Workshop in Bremen

Car-Sharing - an answer to questions of efficiency for urban transport and
individual mobility needs (not only) in times of economic & financial
crisis

Bremen, Wednesday, 23 February 11

Saving Resources is a hot issue in all European cities…so now is a good time
to start and develop Car-Sharing services.

The economic crisis strongly influences activities in both the public and
private sectors. This workshop will show how a city council can save money by
supporting Car-Sharing and how Public Transport operators can attract new
customers by collaborating with Car-Sharing. Car-Sharing operators will report
about the development of Car-Sharing usage during the crisis.

2nd UITP Combined Mobility Platform Workshop

17 November, Brussels, Belgium

The Combined Mobility Platform looks
back to a very interesting and interactive Workshop, which clearly demonstrated
that public transport in synergy with other mobility services like car-sharing,
cycling and taxis is mutually beneficial. Convincing speeches showed that these
forms of mobility are not to be considered as competitive and that combined
mobility is the key to compete with the private owned car in terms of
convenience and cost-structure as well as to enhance the quality of life in our
cities. We face a common and undeniable target that is to change our citizen’s
travel behaviour!
This workshop has been organized in partnership with the

Public workshop on integration of public transport and Car-Sharing in Italy

Italian Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with Iniziativa dei
Comuni per il Car Sharing (ICS) and Italian Association of Public Transport
Companies (ASSTRA), organized a public workshop with the aim to communicate the
integration between Public Transport and Car-Sharing already accomplished in ICS
circuit and to promote the adoption of Car-Sharing as a complementary service by
Public Transport companies.

50 people, representing about 40 Local
Public Transport operators in Italy, participated to two different session
during all day, a general discussion about integration between Car-Sharing and
Public Transport and a round table with 5 Car-Sharing operators.

The
workshop, particularly appreciated by Local Public Transport operators, could
represent a new stimulus to achieve a more complete integration between Public
Transport and Car-Sharing.

November 2010 in Brussels.

In order to face ever more complex mobility needs and to provide a complete
mobility solution to their customers, public transport companies and organizing
authorities are building intermodal strategic alliances with combined mobility
services such as taxis, bikes and Car-Sharing. As stated in the UITP strategy
for the sector, this will help public transport companies to become true
mobility providers.

The UITP Combined Mobility Platform invites you to learn how car-sharing,
bikes and taxis can support public transport and how a successful collaboration
is mutually beneficial. Moreover, it helps to create a culture of more
sustainable travel choices by citizens. A special focus will be set on Business
travel options through Combined Mobility Services. More information and
registration at:

Dump your car, travel smarter!

The upcoming UITP World Congress in Dubai 10 - 14 April 2011 discusses
Car-Sharing as an additional option for Public Transport in Session 21. "An
efficient public transport system should be the backbone of sustainable travel
in every city. However there are interesting additional instruments and
measures that also encourage and enable citizens to live and work in their city
without owning a car. This panel discussion will highlight mobility options such
as car-sharing, taxis and shared bike systems in combination with public
transport as well as restrictive parking policies and congestion charging."

Shanghai World Expo effects in Bremen

The Bremen presentation about Car-Sharing on the World EXPO in Shanghai is
accompanied by a number of local activities in Bremen. Besides awareness
campaigns with a logo-tram, with postcards in pubs and a special T-Shirt (with
Chinese letters for Car-Sharing as eye-catcher), three new
'mobil.punkt'-Car-Sharing stations in public street space were inaugurated.

On 22nd June, the State Minister for Environment, Construction, Transport and
European Affairs Dr. Reinhard Loske and the mayors of three the local councils
together with the business Director of cambio Car-Sharing opened the stations in
densely built neighbourhoods of Bremen. Up to 25 Car-Sharing cars can be put in
the three new and one enlarged 'mobil.punkt'. Dr. Loske and the local mayors
emphasised the expectation that these up to 25 cars will relieve the
neighbourhoods by about 200 private cars which will be replaced by the
Car-Sharing service.

Bremen presentation at Urban Best Practice Area World Expo Shanghai

The City of Bremen in cooperation with the GTZ presented three workshops
under the theme "The Future of Mobility - Options for Sustainable Transport in a
Low Carbon Society" at the Bremen Stand on the Urban Best Practice Area at the
Shanghai Expo from May 24th to 26th 2010.

The workshops focused on the following three key topics for sustainable urban
transport:

* Day 1 - Mon, 24th: Transport and Urban Development

* Day 2 - Tue, 25th: Low Carbon Mobility for Cities *

Day 3 - Wed, 26th: The Role of Electric Vehicles

More than 80 participants attended the event. Participating experts and
practitioners discussed a vision for sustainable urban mobility with a global
perspective. After the events participants joined in for further discussions and
exchanged their experience and knowledge on the subject. The media attention in
China has a focus on the theme of Car-sharing and was pretty good during the
Workshop, several radio and tv groups attending all three days.

Car-Sharing Calculator

cambio Belgium and Autopia ha developed the world's first car-sharing
calculator. This calculator gives advice whether car-sharing might be a good
alternative to your private car. And if so the calculator also gives advice
whether private car-sharing (ride sharing) or professional car-sharing, like
cambio, is the better option. More information:

momo project meeting in Athens

The momo consortium met on 22 to 24 March in Athens for a big project update.
It's clearly visible now that momo is well on track and that results are coming
in. The Fact Sheets, available in German and English for some time now, are
being published in the other momo languages one after the other. In Belgium
various awareness campaigns have been carried out and new collaborations between
Public Transport and Car-Sharing providers were made. Finland and Greece are
constantly pushing towards introducing and promoting Car-Sharing as is our
partner in the Czech Republic is. All partners are advancing their tasks. But
the consortium also had to face the global financial and economical crisis and
some partners had to struggle hard to stay on board. And luckily all managed to
do so.

Next meeting is planned early in autumn in Barcelona.
