2. novembril toimus Tartus järjekordne Mobile Monday, mis purustas Tartu publikurekordi ning tutvustas laiemale publikule uusi ja huvitavaid asukohapõhiseid teenuseid pakkuvaid ettevõtteid ning lahendusi - pikemalt aga sellest inglise keeles all pool.

2nd of November saw a great Mobile Monday event in Tartu. We had again a full house and intriguing LBS (Location Based Services) companies and solutions presenting. The broader public heard the first time that EMT is staring to experiment and test AGPS enabled SIM cards and we also welcomed a great mobile LBS startup Positium into our community.

For a Tartu meeting we had the record number of people attending - nearly 80 and the event lasted late into the night. We can say that this was again one of the best MoMo events we have had.

One of the most interesting news even for Estonian experts on LBS was that EMT has started the work on AGPS enabled SIM card testing. They get the first 5 AGPS enabled SIM cards from Sagem during coming week and start testing the sim cards and researching the solutions for future mobile products based on AGPS enabled SIM cards.

We also saw a row of LBS engaged companies presenting their solutions. Positium, Nutiteq, Regio and Mobi are a part of the new Estonian mKlaster project attacking together the LBS market not only in Estonia but also abroad. It was the first time when momoers heard more in detail what Positium and Nutiteq are doing - and this was pretty impressive.

The coolest part of the event were the workshops, though. We had four groups discussing different parts of location based services world - from advertising to public services. At least two groups arrived in the same area of conclusions: namely the location based services have to consider somehow the preferences and interests of the user. So the offered services or advertising is not spam but useful information for the user.

The group lead by Nutiteq founder Jaak Laineste had a thourough discussion on the "Digital Location Footprint" which helps to offer advertising and recommendations for the user -- where DailyPerfect meets LBS. (the summary of the this group is added as the last slide of Jaak's presentation)

The group lead by Lauri Kinkar concluded:

One of the most important bottle-neck for LBS services are privacy issues. The fact that the service provider knows the location of the user is a privacy violation for many.

LBS services in the public sector for certain services, however, may offer more value than the one-time violation of privacy. Thus, the use of location-based services as public services, is particularly suitable for local chrisis communication.

We thank You all who came to the opening of the season 2009 of Mobile Monday Estonia. We had a full house and very good time. We had four great presentations and long question rounds.

So the event was very successful although the main speaker from Skype, the event sponsor had the last-minute cancellation on their presentation.

This time we focused all our efforts on the field of mobile security. We had persentations and discussions about following main topics: mobile client software security, communications channels security, server side security, security of Mobile-ID, social security related to LBS etc.

The presentations:

Peeter Laud, the R&D director of Cybernetica presented the results of the formal analysis of Mobile-ID, and also the possible attacks on the security system. The answer of him on the question: "Would you use Mobile-ID to make transactions with the bank?" he answered: "No." But we all know that computer-security people are a little bit paranoid :)

Mobile Monday Estonia is launching into the third season. Our opening event will be held on 7th of September in Tartu Ülikoolikohvik at 18:00. This years' first topic is "Mobile Security: 0wned by MoMo".

Considering the past couple of years the topic of cyber security has been under the elevated attention. Most of what we do in cyberworld is already recorded in some databases somewhere. Or furthermore, sometimes freely available on-line in the Internet. Mobile communication is on the rise. Discarded mobile phones will be performing at the first mobile symphony in Estonia

Leigo Järvemuusika 2009 festivalil toimub Eesti esimene mobiilsümfoonia. Kunstnikud Eve Arpo ja Riin Rõõs koos Timo Tootsiga tekitavad Leigo maastikule mobiiltelefonidest heli- ja valgusmuusika "Leviala". Sümfoonia korraldatakse inimestelt kogutud vanade mobiiltelefonidega.

„Kutsume inimesi annetama kunsti hüvanguks oma vana lauasahtlis nukralt lebav mobiil!“ hüüavad korraldajad ühes suust. Hetkel on nende sõnul kogutud üle 130 telefoni. Telefone kogutakse EMT esindustes üle Eesti. Lisaks on oma abi osutunud ka mitmed ettevõtted kogumaks telefone oma töötajaskonna hulgast.

Kui sul on mõni üleliigne telefon kapi nurgas tolmu kogumas, siis too see kogumispunkti kunsti hüvanguks Leigole esinema. Mida rohkem, seda uhkem kontsert saab! Eelnevalt palutakse telefonid ümbrikusse panna ning kirjutada peale märgusõnaks "Leigo". Selliselt jõuab saadetis ilusti proovidesse ja esinema. Toodavad telefonid peaksid olema veel võimelised „pilti ette võtma”, koos akudega, võimalusel laadijaga ning ilma SIM-kaardita, et anda oma viimane esitlus. Puuduvad SIM-id paigutavad telefonidesse korraldajad ning kontserdil võid olla kindel, et sinu vana hea kaaslane on õhtuhämaruses osaline heli- ja valgusmänguga mobiilisümfoonias.

Pärast kontserti viiakse kasutud telefonid jäätmejaama. Nii ei koorma vanad telefonid loodust ja saavad ringiga uue elu.

Estonian first symphony using mobile phones will be held on Leigo Lake Music festival 2009. Artists Eve Arpo and Riin Rõõs with Timo Toots will be composing sound- and lightshow called „Leviala“ ("Coverage Area") using old mobile phones gathered from people all over the Estonia.

Currently more than 130 mobile phones are gathered to perform the mobile symphony. Phones are being voluntarily gathered from people all over Estonia.

Discarded, but functional devices can be brought to every EMT shop in Estonia. Make sure the phone is still alive. Include battery and charger (if you still have one). SIM cards are not required. They will be provided by the organizers and thus connected to the network for the last time to perform their last act.

Authors from a creative establishment You must relax ask, that if you have a phone which is not in use lying around you can make it to perform the last time at Leigo Lake Music Festival 2009. After the show, unused phones will be recycled and made sure they will not harm the environment.

Thank You for a Wonderful Summer Event in Tallinn

This spring's last event brought us to Tallinn and dispite the wonderful 27+ weather outside we had a great event. Thank You all for making it happen and special thanks to our event sponsor Skype.

This was the first time for us to battle a very complex topic: Mobile Voice over IP. We had all the key players present: Skype (VoIP service provider), EMT (operator), and Ericsson (network vendor). This resulted in hugely interesting discussions.

The main result, as the answer on our panel discussion topic: operators can love VoIP. More generally the event revealed more of the possible future scenarios for the mobile market than any topic before on MoMo Estonia events. It is interesting to see all the players play together and the coming changes on the market.

First presenter was Nicholas Babaian, the Mobile Product Manager at Skype. In his shot speech he illuminated the main user experience drivers for the change how we use our phones and how a communication session will look like in the future.

Third to present was Tõnu Grünberg CTO at our biggest mobile operator EMT. According to the topic he told us the operator's view on VoIP, the difficulties on markets, and introduced the EMT's VoIP service package.

As the traditional finish to our formal part we had the open panel discussion: "VoIP on Mobile - can Operators Learn to Love it?" which was definitely the most interesting part of the event. The discussion was friendly, interesting, but partly quite heated. We thank the audience for all the intriguing questions!

We are happy to invite you to the next Mobile Monday Tallinn event on the 1st of June in Mustpeade Maja. The theme of the event is "Mobile Voice over IP: we did it!" and we deal mainly with internet telephony from the standpoint of mobile phones.

Skype and other VoIP service providers have been on the market for years, but VoIP on mobile handsets is a more novel and exciting topic. On the 1st of June we will discuss the following questions: what are voice calls over the mobile internet, what possible business models exist in this field, how might VoIP change the mobile market, and what is the future of VoIP on mobile from the eyes of mobile operators and VoIP service providers?

Again, good news on Estonian mobile scene. Tigerprises writes that Estonian programmer Raoul Järvis (company T+1 Solutions) has taken home the Grand Prize, over $557 500, including cash and free maps from the 2009 Navteq Global LBS challenge!

More on Yahoo News: "The winning application, Taxi4me, is a mobile taxi ordering service that helps consumers anywhere in the world connect with trusted taxi companies. The desired time and destination is sent from a user's mobile phone to a taxi brokering server. Local taxi companies then submit competitive bids and proposed routes back to the consumer."

Mobile Monday launches in Latvia

April the 6th will see the launch of Mobile Monday Latvia, with the first event to be held in Riga, the Morberga Hall of the Hotel Riga at 18:00. The event's topic is "Latvian Mobile Service Market and Near Future Trends" – the venue is free and open to everybody interested.

We are happy to announce that also with the support of Mobile Monday Estonia the Mobile Monday community reaches Latvia. This first event is an introduction which will hopefully turn into a series of mobile-themed events that will be held regularly. The speakers at the opening event will cover general trends and developments in the mobile value-added service market. Among other speakers the opening Mobile Monday event in Latvia will be also attended by Jari Tammisto, the CEO of Mobile Monday OY.

The event will begin with presentations which will be followed by a networking part for the guests of the event. All Mobile Monday events are held in English as they are often attended by foreign guests.

Thank You for a Great Tartu Event! The Summary

This years opening event in Tartu was a huge success. The presentations were very interesting, atmosphere was very open and constructive. We really enjoyed the event and thank all who came, who presented their ideas and of course our event sponsor Tele2.

This time we concentrated on the small scale business ideas and opportunities. We also had a change in our traditional event schedule. We replaced the Open Panel Discussion with a Workshop. Even to our amazement the workshop worked extremely well, generating even more fuzz, ideas exchange and networking effect than usual Mobile Monday Estonia meetings. We thank you for that.

First to present was Andres Jõesaar, the Head of Corporate Sales and Content Services of Tele2 Eesti AS. The focus of his talk "Opportunities with Tele2: how to cash innovative ideas?" was on market situation of mobile content business and what kind of opportunities there are for small service providers. Andres gave a short overview on the structure of Mobile Market. What is the role of an operator and mobile service provider.

The second presenter was Veljo Otsason, one of the 5 Mobi Founders. He told us how Mobi started and got here in a presentation "Mobi - from student startup to leading mobile service company". The story of 5 random students meeting up at a university seminar, creating a small project group and succeeding with it, was just fascinating. Veljo also revealed what has been the growth of the company, what was and currently is their position on mobile services market.

The third presentation "Student business, mistakes we made" was given by Aigar Vaigu from AIESEC Tartu and a founder of Teadusmosaiik OÜ. He focused on the typical errors a startup (specially a student / rookie startup) makes, based on his own personal experience with startups. The main messages were these:

First, that a company and a business are two different but essentially interlinked things - in a startup one without another will fail. Second, don't try to figure out everything yourself - ask for advice. Third, you need to sell your product, without that, there is no product and for selling you have to know your customer and you have to have people doing the selling. Fourth - if you have an idea, give it a go, if you just sit on it, nothing will happen. Fifth - be persistent (also Veljos talk stressed that) and stay focused. And sixth - startuping is very very hard, but completely worth it.

Then we had a workshop, "Small-scale Mobile business: Ideas and Solutions". Instead of a typical open panel discussion we picked three topics, selected the experts for the topics, and people divided themselves up between the groups. After 20 to 30 minutes of discussions each group presented the ideas they came up with.

The results were great! The workshop generated much more networking and ideas exchange than we had expected. Also the people in the workshops were very happy.

The results of the "business building group" were presented by Asko Seeba, the CEO of DailyPerfect a fresh startup from Estonia. He made a quick presentation of a small mobile service idea describing the team needed to implement and market the idea and stressed out that the most important thing is the selling of the idea. He actually wrote a great summary about the work and it can be read on his blog.

The results of the "univesity symbiosis with commerce" group were presented by Ulrich Norbisrath. He is a post-doctoral researcher at the Computer-Science Department of Tartu University responsible for the PlayStation3 GRID and friend-to-friend computing research. The main points of this group were that universities should support PhD and MSc students to monetize their research ideas. There should be some kind of university related venture capital fund like the Fraunhofer in Germany. Also he writes a small summary about the results. He also encourages the Tartu start-up founders to start meeting up :) That we call a Mobile Monday networking effect.

The results of the "feasible / unfeasible mobile service ideas" group were presented by Vahur Mäe he is the Member of Board of AIESEC Tartu. This group discussed the main problems related to the mobile services market: like the size of Estonian market. The solution for that was to concentrate and find the niche ideas and services which would be more expensive. An example for that was the mobile voice aid services for vision-impaired people.

For me personally I found the most exiting two ideas of public services. First composing hundreds of volunteers like neighbor watch in Tartu, and the city government or police or medical services could use this SMS list to spread the word of hazards, missing people, stolen cars and crime in generally. This kind of list does exist already among the taxi drivers, but the idea could have much grander scale. The second idea was to have proximity based transportation information service. Where phone could sense instantly where are the nearest bus stations and guide you there, also providing you with the information for leaving buss and a ticket.

Mobile Monday Estonia inaugurates its second year with an event in Tartu, the cradle of Estonian innovation! Looking back on the five events held over the previous year Mobile Mondays’ success in bringing the community together is evident. Innovatsiooniaasta korraldajad kutsuvad uuenduslikke inimesi ja organisatsioone uuendajate kohtumispaika www.in.ee. Esimese kahe nädalaga registreeris in.ee lehel end uuenduslikuna 130 organisatsiooni ja ligi 250 inimest.

"Kutsume kõiki uuendusmeelseid inimesi ja organisatsioone olema teistele eeskujuks ja inspiratsiooniks. After an extremely difficult discussion among the judges about our two strong candidates for the MoMo Peer Awards in Barcelona, in the end Fortumo was selected to represent Estonia among the 42 global nominees. Congratulations to Fortumo, and commiserations to Nutiteq who were just one point behind when the votes were added up - we'd have been happy for either to go.

Eestist registreerusid MobileMonday Mobile Peer Awards'ile kandideeruma kaks meie kohalikku startup'i: Nutiteq ja Fortumo.

Peer Awardsi'le asus kandideerima üle maailma 165 startup'i. Nende hulgas ka Nutiteq ja Fortumo.

Vastavalt konkursi reeglite järgi otsustatakse Eesti vooru edasimineja järgmise kolme päeva jooksul. See tähendab, et üks Eesti mobiili-startupidest jõuab ca 50 hulka, kelle hulgast valitakse 20 finalisti Mobile Monday Comitee poolt.

Finalistid ja võitjad kuulutatakse välja Barcelonas 16. veeburaril 2009.

There are two candidates from Estonia registered for MobileMonday Mobile Peer Awards: Nutiteq and Fortumo.

There are 165 startups all over the world competing for Mobile Peer Awardsi. Among them two Estonian startups Nutiteq and Fortumo.

According to the rules of the Mobile Peer Awards, the Estonian nominee will be selected during the next three days to represent Estonia. This means that one of the Estonian mobile startups will compete with 50 other startups all over the world to compete for the position of the 20 finalists chosen by Mobile Monday Comitee.

The finalists and winners will be announced on February 16th, 2009 in Barcelona.

Mobile Monday Peer Awards are Coming - the Call for Estonian mobile start-ups

Mobile Monday Peer Awards on üks tunnustatumaid innovatsiooni toetavaid mobiili start-up'ide auhindu maailmas ning on taaskord avatud konkureerimiseks. Auhinnad jagatakse välja rohkem kui 1000 pealise publiku ees Mobile World Congressi ajal ning sellel konkursil osalemine on suurepärane soovitus startup'idele ka tulevikus.

Võitjatele on see suur tunnustus ning võitjad saavad oma start-up'i esitleda Barcelonas. Täpsemalt konkursi kohta lugege Peer Awards'i kodulehelt või konkursi avalikust teatest SIIT. Eelmiste aastate võitjate kohta saab lugeda siit.

Sel aastal on selektsiooni protsessi veidi muudetud: http://mobilepeerawards.com/how-to-participate. Osaleja peavad kandidatuuri ise üles seadma (Eesti mobiili start-up'id peakisd registreerima end Tallinn / Tartu chapteri alla).

Sel aastal kandideerides tuleb tõsiselt tähelepanu pöörata sellele, kuidas start-up ennast esitleb. Lõppvõistluse žürii võtab oma otsused vastu puhtalt võistlustulle esitatud materjalide alusel. See tähendab, et osalejad peavad ennast nii hästi "müüma", kui võimalik. Esmakordne on see, et materjalide hulgas on võimalik esitada ka näiteks tutvustav (youtube'i)video enda firmast.

Oma start-up'i esitamiseni on aega 31. Detsembri keskööni kohaliku aja järgi. Peale seda otsustab Mobile Monday Estonia meeskond, kes liigub edasi lõppvõistlusele. Tõenäoliselt saadame me edasi ettevõtte, kes võiks oma esitatud materjalide alusel saavutada lõpp-võistlusel võimalikult kõrge koha.

The MobileMonday Mobile Peer Awards Barcelona are among the most influential events in the mobile industry and, with over 1000 attendants, the point of reference in startup innovation during the Mobile World Congress.

Estonian start-ups should submit their candidacy under Tallinn / Tartu chapter and this year candidates have to concentrate very hard on the materials they submit - the jury in Barcelona will make the decisions based on those materials.

The submission ends on 31st December, midnight local time. After that the Mobile Monday Estonia team will decide who is the best to present Estonia in Barcelona.

Deadlines Changed for Mobile Monday Peer Awards

Startup'ide esitamise tähtajad on muutunud Peer Awards'i jaoks - esitamise tähtaeg lükati kuu aega edasi - kuni 31. detsembrini.

Praeguse seisuga on paljud MoMo chapter'id nõudnud lisaaega oma startup'ide jaoks. Seda ka anti: startup'ide registreerimine lõppeb 31. detsembri keskööl kohaliku aja järgi.

Praeguseks on startup'e registeerunud Buenos Airese (kõige rohkem neist), Bostoni, Berliini, Rootsi, Belfasti, Dublini, Jakarta, New Yorgi, Chennai, Mumbai, Tel Avivi, Tokyo, Madriidi ja Barcelona chapterite juurde.

The submit dates for the Peer Awards competition have changed - to register your startup you have until the 31. of December.

Due to the many requests by chapters to have more time to nominate their startups for the Peer Awards, the startup registration will close on Dec. 31 midnight local time.

So far may chapters allready have registered startups: Buenos Aires (top ranking in registered startups, so far!), Boston, Berlin, Sweden, Belfast, Dublin, Jakarta, New York, Chennai, Mumbai, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Madrid and Barcelona.

The 5th Nordic Mobile Media Conference will take place the first time in Estonia, Tallinn, on December 3-4, 2008 (Mobile Monday community members get a 25% discount on registration).

Thank You for another Mobile Monday

On Monday we met at the Mobile Marketing & Advertising event. We were about 80 people listening to different presentations covering the given topic, plus the three Estonian mobile operators presented their Advertising Reach Package (all the presentations are included below).

As said the center of the event was on mobile advertising, we were also happy to be the first to present and speak about the brand-new Estonian Operators Mobile Advertising Reach Package. But the topic was more widely covered with different case studies on mobile marketing tools and opportunities by Josep M. Nolla from Tele2 and the Media Agencies view was presented by Hanno Kindel from Media house.

We also had Mart Kikas as a guest to present his upcoming Nordic Mobile Media conference and he offered to Mobile Monday community a discount on the conference registration (25% off - look at his presentation slides below for the discount code).

The event was stirred and then nicely wrapped up with our traditional panel discussion. During the panel people rose different questions but also gave answers related to the different players on the mobile market, but also to different ideas where and how to use mobile advertising or what the future might be in mobile marketing world.

Tulemas on järjekordne Mobile Monday Estonia üritus "Mobile Marketing and Advertising". MoMo Amsterdam Speaking at Estonian Annual Innovation Conference - InnoEstonia 2008

Meil on väga hea meel teatada, et üks Mobile Monday Amsterdami asutajaid Yuri van Geest esineb Eesti Innovatsiooni Aastakonverentsil InnoEstonia 2008, 14. Novembril kell 14:00.

Yuri käsitleb oma esinemises "Mobile Internet and LBS: Now and Future" asukohapõhiseid teenusteid, vastavaid turgu ja ärimudeleid, start-up'ide võtmeomadusi, kuid samuti ka sotsiaalsete community'te rolli asukohapõhistes teenustes. Täpsemalt vaata konverentsi programmist.

The event last week was the best so far - thank you for that!

We had nearly 100 of you on our very mobile Monday and a row of prominent speakers covering extremely interesting topics. The open panel discussion was very active as usual and the demos had an interested audience.

We would like to give our special thanks to our speakers:

Director & Head of Multimedia Sales of Ericsson, Joachim Bergman started with the overall view and description of different problems in the mobile media area - how different players in the field have different views on the subject matter although they "share the same bed". He drew out the outlines of the mobile media business, counterparts and the logic of this business. He also described the difficulties of this emerging market related to the media rights costs, the size of the current market and the miscommunication between parties. The talk was a great introduction for the people who had never peaked into the mobile media sector, giving a very good overview.

Head of Data Communication and Content Services' Group from EMT, Ando Meentalo gave an operator's view on the subject matter. He began his talk by giving out two Nokia phones, both running live mobile TV on them - if I'm not mistaken it was the MTV's The Real World show. Both phones were running on different technologies, one showing DVB-H broadcast TV and the other streaming TV over a 3.5G network. To my surprise the quality was just amazing, I could even read the Estonian subtitles on the phone screens. The talk was also interesting giving a lot of new information about the mobile media sector in Estonia.

IT Manager of Delfi, Mait Tafenau gave us a presentation of Delfis' brand new mobile platform, basically two new mobile platforms, one for iPhone like mobile devices iphone.delfi.ee and one for older mobile phones at mobile.publik.ee. This was the first public presentation of the platform, short and to the point and again, audience had the possibility to try out the portals on different devices from an iPhone to a Sony Playstation Portable.

The Open Panel Discussion featured this time: Andres Jõesaar - the Head of Corporate Sales and Content Services at Tele2, Jaanus Lillenberg - the Head of Development and Marketing at Postimees, Jouko Vierumäki - the CEO of Fromdistance, and Joachim Bergman the speaker from Ericsson. The discussion was lead by Priit Salumaa - one of the Founders of MoMo Estonia. The Discussion again emphasized the different view of mobile operators, media companies, hardware providers and application development companies. The discussion was both heated and involved between the audience and panelists, covering among other things different failures and success stories.

After the presentations and the open panel discussion Ericsson had two demos going on: MeOnTV and MSDP. The MeOnTV was quite a remarkable system to handle and present different TV streams on mobile phones and other devices, and MSDP was a very powerful tool to build and maintain mobile portals.

The informal part of the event was very relaxed with networking between the attendees. We have to thank our very kind sponsor Ericsson for the wonderful variety of snacks and beverages.
This was surely our best MoMo Estonia event so far, with some engaging discussions and interesting presentations on an interesting and novel topic - thankyou to all attendees!

He's giving an overview how Ericsson can assist in Mobile Media - some insights into media rights costs (substantial costs). Content aggregation in the traditional sense will not work - internet has proven this, as well as music. How does Ericsson add value and where. The presentation includes two demos: MSDP and MeonTV.
