Get Your Patio Ready for the First Summer BBQ

As someone who loves winter, it’s always a little shocking to my system when the first hot days of the year arrive. But with now it’s June and I’m ready to embrace summer entertaining season. Last year we completely overhauled our deck furniture with a visit to Patio Place in Woburn, Massachusetts. We upgraded everything–from our dining table to our seating area and now it time to is welcome family and friends for that first deck dinner. Before we host our Father’s Day Brunch, we are going to do a quick clean up.

Our new furniture was a big investment and we want to enjoy it for years. I’ve employed a few simple maintenance steps to make sure our patio looks great and our guests have a comfortable place to relax.

Start with a Deep Clean

I had a nice sunny day last weekend to start the process. The first step is to do a thorough inspection. We stored our cushions in plastic bins and had furniture covers for all our tables and chairs. Thankfully the covers worked like a charm. But if you see dirt and debris, use a soft brush to remove loose dirt, leaves, pollen, and cobwebs that may have accumulated during the off-season.

The next step is a quick wipe down. For most outdoor furniture, a solution of mild dish soap and warm water works well. Prep a bucket and grab some soft non-abrasive cotton towels or rags. Wipe down frames paying special attention to armrests, tabletops, and other high-touch areas. Rinse thoroughly and allow everything to dry completely before replacing cushions.

Different materials require different care:

Aluminum furniture is low maintenance and can usually be cleaned with soap and water.

Wicker and woven furniture should be cleaned gently with a soft bristle brush to remove dirt trapped in crevices. If you have a portable cordless vaccuum, that’ll work too.

Wood furniture benefits from a wood-specific cleaner and may require seasonal sealing depending on the material.

Steel or iron furniture should be checked for signs of rust and treated promptly to prevent further damage.

Refresh Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor cushions take the brunt of the elements, so they deserve special attention. Ideally, you’ll have treated any stains when they happened last season, but if you notice stains, it’s time to tackle them. If you need to wash your cushions, pick a nice sunny day to do it. Remove cushion covers if possible and follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions and definitely air dry them. Allow cushions to air dry completely in a sunny, well-ventilated area before placing them back on furniture. Trapped moisture can lead to mildew and unpleasant odors. If there’s any shrinkage, it can get very difficult to get the cushions back on.

For cushions that cannot be machine washed, use a mixture of mild soap and water and gently scrub with a soft brush. I buy a few soft bristle tooth brushes when they are on sale from the grocery store to keep on hand for jobs like this.

How to Handle Stains

If you discover stains on your cushions, don’t panic. Most common outdoor stains can be treated successfully with a little patience.

For food and beverage spills, blot the area first and then clean with mild soap and warm water. For tougher stains, create a solution of one cup of water and a small amount of gentle detergent. Test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area first.

Mildew stains may require a specialized outdoor fabric cleaner. Follow product directions carefully and avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the fabric or fade colors. Sometimes a wash and then sun exposure will handle it–or it might be a lost cause.

For stubborn stains that won’t come out, consider replacing the cushion covers or investing in new cushions. Fresh cushions can instantly update the look of your outdoor space at a fraction of the cost of new furniture.

Protect Your Investment

Once your furniture is clean, take steps to keep it looking great all season long. Store cushions in a deck box or covered area during storms, and consider investing in quality furniture covers when pieces are not in use for extended periods.

Regular maintenance throughout the summer will prevent dirt and stains from becoming permanent. A quick weekly wipe-down can go a long way toward preserving the beauty of your outdoor living space.

At Patio Place at Ski Haus, you’ll find stylish, durable outdoor furniture and accessories designed to help families make the most of every summer gathering. With a little seasonal care and the right pieces in place, your patio can become the favorite gathering spot for every barbecue, celebration, and sunset conversation this season.

Yesterday, I got a text alert from a friend. She’d planned a family trip to New Hampshire centering around hiking and the outdoors. Both of her daughters were home from college and this was the one family trip she’d manage to shoehorn into the calendar. With a full weekend of hiking in the White Mountains on the itinerary, she panicked. The weather forecast was looking ROUGH. The weekend is packed with storms in the North Conway area. The trails they had carefully mapped out suddenly felt like a bad idea. But instead of canceling the trip, they did what seasoned travelers know how to do—they pivoted.

The truth is, even in one of New England’s most beloved outdoor destinations, Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate. Fortunately, North Conway and the surrounding Mount Washington Valley offer plenty of ways to enjoy a getaway when the weather isn’t hiking-friendly.

If rain clouds roll in on your next mountain escape, consider these alternatives.

Rainy Day Alternatives in North Conway: When the Hiking Plans Wash Out

Relax and Recharge at White Mountain Sauna Haus

One of the newest wellness attractions in the area is already generating plenty of buzz. White Mountain Sauna Haus offers a modern take on Nordic-style wellness, combining sauna sessions with cold plunges and recovery-focused experiences.

After a morning spent watching the rain fall over the mountains, this is the perfect place to slow down and embrace a different kind of adventure. Instead of chasing summits, visitors can focus on relaxation, recovery, and a little self-care. It’s an ideal activity for couples, groups of friends, or anyone looking to unwind during a rainy weekend. Since her “kids” are in their 20’s this is a great match.

Catch Live Music at Stone Mountain Arts Center

Just across the New Hampshire border in Brownfield, Maine, Stone Mountain Arts Center has built a national reputation as one of New England’s most intimate music venues. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the venue combines exceptional acoustics with a warm, rustic atmosphere that feels perfectly at home in the mountains.

On June 12, Celtic rock favorites Gaelic Storm take the stage, but the venue hosts performances throughout the year. Even if outdoor plans have been canceled, an evening of live music can quickly become the highlight of the trip. Much of the line-up leans family-friendly. Check out the upcoming acts here.

Sip Local at Tuckerman Brewing Company

Rainy weather and craft beer make a surprisingly good pairing.

Tuckerman Brewing Company has become a social hub for both visitors and locals, offering live music, themed trivia nights, special events, and plenty of opportunities to sample locally brewed beer. One upcoming event features a Lord of the Rings-themed trivia night, but the brewery calendar stays busy throughout the year.

The relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to spend a few hours with friends, grab a bite to eat, and wait out a passing storm.

Enjoy Community Theater

For travelers looking for a dose of culture, the local theater scene delivers.

M&D Playhouse is currently staging 9 to 5: The Musical, a lively adaptation of the classic film. Community theater often becomes an unexpected vacation highlight, offering talented performances in an intimate setting. It’s also a great option for families, couples, or anyone seeking an evening activity that doesn’t depend on the weather.

Discover the Majestic Theatre’s Listening Room

If you prefer smaller venues, The Majestic Theatre offers one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Its listening room atmosphere creates a more personal music experience, where audiences can focus on the performance rather than the crowd.

Add craft cocktails and comfortable seating, and you have the perfect rainy-night outing. It’s the kind of venue that reminds travelers why local arts scenes are often more memorable than major attractions.

Try a Different Kind of Mountain Challenge

Not every outdoor activity has to involve a long hike.

The White Mountain Milers’ Friday Night Vertical at Cranmore offers runners a chance to tackle the mountain in a fun, community-oriented event. Depending on conditions, these gatherings can provide an energetic alternative for visitors who still want to get outside and experience the mountain environment without committing to a full day on the trails.

Feeling Lucky? Visit Revo Casino

One of the newer additions to the region’s entertainment options is Revo Casino. Visitors will find gaming, live music, and affordable drinks all under one roof. While gambling may not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning a White Mountains getaway, it offers another indoor option when the forecast refuses to cooperate.

The White Mountains will always be known for spectacular hikes, waterfalls, and mountain views. But one rainy weekend can reveal a different side of North Conway—one filled with live music, local theater, wellness experiences, breweries, and unexpected discoveries. I’m betting they will find breaks in the weather for some shorter hikes and time outdoors, but this list will definitely salvage the rest of the weekend.

It’s the summer of memoirs, and I’m here for it. The latest is Famesick by Lena Dunham.

This book is an irresistible listen/read. It’s part voyeuristic (like watching a car crash) and part mesmerizing (like watching an artist at work). In her second memoir (the first, Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s “Learned,” was published in 2014), Dunham takes us back to her childhood and offers a thorough analysis of how she became the controversial artist she is today. She brings us along for her swift success and then her spiral into a very dark place. Where we end up is a clearer understanding of her art, her voice, and her hard-won self-acceptance.

Unlike many celebrity books, there’s no ghostwriter, and that matters. There’s no filter on Dunham’s work. I adore the pace and the honesty with which she writes about both her successes and her failures.

What I love about Dunham is that she put it all out there—her good qualities, her mistakes, and her messes. Normally, we don’t let women get away with this. We want them tidy and neat, fitting inside a perfectly shaped box. While many people want less Dunham, I want more.

“If you make yourself out to be a bottomless resource, people will frack.”

She’s a canny observer, and that’s what makes this book work.

When Dunham compares her nervous system to that of a bunny, it makes perfect sense. Especially when you rewatch her acting in Girls and see her skin prickle, her eyes dart, and her body try to make itself small when necessary. Her performance may not be traditionally polished, but it is elemental in nature.

The book deals with her career as a multi-hyphenate in Hollywood, but mostly it talks about her health. And to put it bluntly, she’s a hot mess. On top of having numerous health issues, she feels things more deeply than the rest of us. I resisted the urge to say that some of her illnesses must be psychological in nature because I know that psychological pain is real pain.

She covers the early success of Tiny Furniture (2010) and then brings us along as her world flips upside down. She was just 24 when she got to run her own show, Girls—impossible! What a risk HBO took on her, and wow, how it paid off. The show became both a critical and commercial success. I had no idea that behind the scenes she was struggling so profoundly.

With her star rising, her body starts breaking down. The book is a reckoning of sorts. Was it worth the tradeoff?

As I started the book, I began rewatching Girls, and it holds up. The fashions may look dated, but the struggling artists remain timeless. During this rewatch, though, I found myself sad for Dunham. I watched her body change with each season, adding weight and losing some of the spring in her step that characterized the early episodes. We’re seeing her grow up and get sick at the same time.

Dunham just turned 40, but she’s not much wiser when it comes to oversharing or being naked. Now, instead of full-frontal sex scenes, we get the stripped-down honesty of where she is in life and how she navigates the world as a chronically ill person.

“The chaos wasn’t happening to me … I was the chaos.”

Do I want to be her best friend? Absolutely not. Way too much work. But I want women like her to exist. We need more sensitive observers in the world, not fewer.

This book should be listened to as well as read because hearing Dunham’s voice adds another dimension. The moments of pain and joy are perfectly emphasized through her narration. Her early days as a college student and filmmaker were my favorite sections—that combination of hopefulness and cluelessness is a joy to witness.

Thank you, Ms. Dunham, for being the brave artist that you are. I hope to see, read, and experience more of your gifts in the future. I also hope that young artists—and the people who love them—pick up this book. It reminds us what it means to be deeply sensitive in a world where thick skin often seems like a necessity.

Get the book on Amazon here.

Final Thoughts

Raw, funny, chaotic, and surprisingly moving, Famesick is less about fame than it is about what happens when a highly sensitive artist is thrust into the spotlight before she’s ready. Dunham writes with the same honesty that made Girls so compelling, but with the perspective of someone who has survived the fallout. Get Famesick on Amazon here.

One-line takeaway: Famesick is a fascinating portrait of a woman learning that her greatest gift—feeling everything deeply—can also be her greatest challenge.

For fans of: Girls, Not That Kind of Girl, Jenny Mollen, Cat Marnell, celebrity memoirs, stories of creative ambition, and readers interested in the complicated intersection of fame, illness, and identity.

Where I read it: On long country walks with the audiobook in my ears, while simultaneously rewatching Girls and seeing Lena Dunham’s story through an entirely new lens.

I’ve never picked up Anna Quindlen’s fiction before. I’ve read two of her memoirs — Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake and A Short Guide to a Happy Life — and always came away thinking my time with her was well spent. So when I wandered into a bookstore in the Nashville airport recently, I picked up After Annie to keep me company on the flight home from a girls’ trip.

It turned out to be exactly the right book for that particular moment.

For me, friendships have been the cornerstones of my life. I wasn’t someone with sprawling friend groups growing up — just one or two girls I centered my world around. Because of moves and school changes, many of those early friendships were shortened by circumstance. It wasn’t until college that I met my first true soulmate friends. The kind of women who push you toward your best self while also grounding you completely. The love of a real girlfriend is powerful, and Quindlen understands that deeply.

At its core, After Annie is a love story about friendship, grief, and the complicated rebuilding that follows loss. Annie and Annemarie have been best friends since grade school, and the bond they share makes some people wary and others jealous. Marriages, careers, children, and health crises only tighten the connection between them.

When Annie dies — this happens early enough not to count as a spoiler — everyone around her begins to unravel. Annie was the kind of woman who held entire ecosystems together without anyone fully appreciating all the quiet, unpaid work she performed. Her husband, Bill, retreats inward into his grief. Her eldest daughter does what eldest daughters often do: she steps up before she’s ready. While Quindlen gives space to the husband and children Annie leaves behind, it’s Annemarie, the best friend, who feels most untethered by the loss.

That emotional truth is what makes this novel linger.

Quindlen writes with such clarity about the invisible labor women perform emotionally — not just in marriages and motherhood, but in friendships. The women who remember birthdays, orchestrate dinners, notice mood shifts, keep conversations going, and quietly hold entire communities together. When one disappears, the silence is seismic.

From the book:

“The incessant drumbeat of women talking to other women. It never ended, except when one of them died, and then the silence left by that one woman was as big as the sky.”

That feels like the thesis of the entire novel.

If you’ve been lucky enough to have friendships where someone can finish your sentences and see through your nonsense before you even speak, this book will hit hard. Yes, it will make you cry. But more than that, it will make you profoundly grateful for the women who have witnessed your life alongside you.

By the final pages, I found myself reaching for my phone, texting friends, and mentally planning our next getaway before the credits had even rolled in my mind.

Final Thoughts

Tender, observant, and emotionally intelligent, After Annie is less about death than it is about the women who help us survive life itself. Quindlen captures the quiet heroics of friendship with remarkable warmth and honesty. Get After Annie on Amazon here.

One-line takeaway: After Annie is a moving reminder that the women who know us best often become the architecture of our lives.

For fans of: Ann Patchett, Elizabeth Berg, The Five-Star Weekend, readers navigating midlife friendships, and anyone who has ever relied on a chosen family of women.

Every year I tell myself I’ll remember what I read—and every year I don’t. So this is my attempt to keep track, share what I loved (or didn’t), and hopefully give friends and followers a few what should I read next? ideas along the way.

This list will grow throughout 2026 and include everything from buzzy new releases to older books that finally made their way onto my nightstand or into my headphones. Some will be wins, some won’t—but all of them earned my time, which feels worth noting.

2026 Reads (So Far)

📘 White Noise by Don DeLillo
A classic for a reason—but not an easy love. Heavy on ideas about consumerism, technology, and fear, lighter on warmth. Worth reading if you enjoy debating a book more than escaping into it.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/white-noise-a-book-review/

📕 Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden
An intimate, sharply paced memoir about love, divorce, and the quiet mysteries inside a marriage. Best experienced on audio, read by the author herself—and one you’ll want to recommend immediately.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/strangers-a-memoir-of-marriage-book-review/

📘 Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb
An intimate, sharply observed memoir that reveals therapy as both a profession and a profoundly human act.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/maybe-you-should-talk-to-someone-book-review-a-candid-look-at-therapy/

📕 Wards of the State: The Long Shadow of American Foster Care by Claudia Rowe
A deeply reported, emotionally complex look at foster care that exposes systemic failures and the lasting impact on the children it’s meant to protect.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/wards-of-the-state-book-review

📘 The Astral Library by Kate Quinn
A whimsical, book-lover’s fantasy that blends literary escapism with a modern heroine’s search for belonging—imperfect, but an engaging beach read.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/the-astral-library-book-review

📕 This Is Not About Us by Allegra Goodman
A nuanced, character-driven novel exploring sibling bonds, generational tension, and the quiet work of change—rich in detail and emotional insight.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/this-is-not-about-us-book-review/

📘 The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
A smart, quietly compelling epistolary novel about a sharp, solitary woman navigating aging, family tension, and second chances—layered, literary, and deeply relatable (with just enough bookish flair to make you feel very accomplished in the hot tub).
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/the-correspondent-book-review

📕 How to Start: Discovering Your Life’s Work by Jodi Kantor
A practical, hopeful guide for graduates and parents navigating the uncertain transition into adulthood and career-building—with smart insights on ambition, opportunity, and resilience.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/how-to-start-discovering-your-lifes-work-review/

📘 After Annie by Anna Quindlen
A tender, emotionally intelligent novel about friendship, grief, and the women who quietly hold entire families — and each other — together. Thoughtful, deeply relatable, and guaranteed to make you text your closest friends before the final page.
→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/book-review-after-annie-by-anna-quindlen/

📕 Famesick by Lena Dunham
A raw, funny, and deeply personal memoir about fame, chronic illness, creativity, and the cost of living life without a filter. Dunham reflects on her meteoric rise from Tiny Furniture to Girls, offering an unflinching look at success, self-destruction, and hard-won self-acceptance.

→ Read the full review: https://www.momtrends.com/living/famesick-lena-dunham-memoir-review/

The year started with two very different reads. White Noise was a family book club pick and firmly in the “glad we talked about it more than I enjoyed it” category. Heavy on ideas, light on warmth, but it sparked great conversations and reminded me that not every book has to be a favorite to be worth reading.

Then I swung in the opposite direction with Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden, which I listened to on audio and flew through. It’s intimate, smart, and deeply human—one of those books you immediately want to pass along to a friend with a you’ll get this text.

That’s the energy I’m going for here. No required reading, no pressure to agree with me, and no pretending I loved something just because critics did. This is simply a running list of what I read, what stuck, and what I’d recommend to a friend over coffee.

Check back anytime—this list is very much a work in progress.

How to Start arrived at the perfect time to help me stop spiralling. Perhaps I’ve been living under a cultural rock, but I had no idea that Jodi Kantor and Ron Lieber were married. They are two of my favorite New York Times writers. Kantor covered the Supreme Court and was responsible for much of the reporting on Harvey Weinstein that led to his trials and a national — even international — reckoning about power and how men abuse it in the workplace.

Lieber helped guide my family through the college process with his book How to Pay for College. His thoughtful ideas helped me look for value beyond the big-name schools (see full review below).

The Books Parents Need to Get Started on the College Search

I subscribe to Lieber’s newsletters, and his most recent one suggested his wife’s new book. That’s when I put the pieces together about this literary power couple. Side note: I was impressed that Lieber replied to my personal note. I wrote to him about my daughter’s frustrating search for a summer internship and my broader concerns about this current generation of graduates. Based on Lieber’s recommendation, I bought the book.

The premise is simple: offer hope and direction to new graduates. Back in 2025, Jodi delivered the commencement speech at Columbia during a particularly turbulent moment for the university. Amid leadership upheaval and campus unrest, Kantor deliberately chose not to center the Gaza conflict. Instead, she focused on what students most wanted to hear: what comes next.

For the Grads

Our 20-somethings need direction — and a little good news. This book offers both. Kantor doesn’t look at the world through rose-colored glasses. Instead, she uses her reporter’s lens to examine who is succeeding and why opportunities are finding them. Her message is reassuring: you don’t need hundreds of offers. You just need one good match that can launch your career.

The book includes a handful of actionable tips, but more importantly, it offers a mindset for navigating this confusing season of life.

For the Parents

Exploring the themes she writes about leaves you feeling both hopeful and purposeful. Vague optimism is next to useless; we all want advice we can actually use. This is the kind of book you’ll underline, revisit, and keep nearby for the days when things feel especially bleak.

Our Story

This year’s summer internship search was pretty brutal. My daughter’s decision to study abroad took her to Lisbon last fall, and while she was away from the on-campus recruiting cycle, she missed many internship opportunities. I don’t see this as a failure on her part at all. I wanted her to travel freely and fully experience Europe during her semester abroad. Spending every spare moment networking and job hunting didn’t feel like the best use of her precious 90 days before her visa expired.

By the time she seriously began applications and networking in late November — which honestly didn’t seem that late to me — many deadlines had already passed.

What It’s Really Like Out There

Once back in the States, she threw herself into the process. We were fortunate that friends and acquaintances generously shared their time and expertise, but there still weren’t any offers. I could sense her growing fear. Had studying abroad somehow derailed her future?

This spring, she widened her search and finally started seeing some success. That small glimpse of what comes next left both parent and college student feeling nervous. Jodi’s book arrived at exactly the right time.

This is going to be one of the top graduation gifts this season. At under 100 pages, it can easily be read in an hour, but I promise it will spark meaningful dinner-table conversations. Kantor’s work made me feel better, and I plan to recommend this slim little tome to every friend compassionately spiraling alongside their young adults.

Final Thoughts

Practical, reassuring, and deeply timely, How to Start offers both graduates and parents a much-needed reminder that careers rarely unfold in a straight line — and that one meaningful opportunity can change everything. Get it on Amazon here.

One-line takeaway: How to Start is a smart, hopeful read for graduates and the parents cheering them on through an increasingly complicated launch into adulthood.

For fans of: Readers of Ron Lieber, anxious parents of college students, recent graduates, and anyone looking for thoughtful perspective on careers, ambition, and finding direction in uncertain times. And if you loved Anna Quindlen’s A Short Guide to a Happy Life, this is for you.

Where I read it: On a flight while navigating my daughter’s stressful summer internship search — which made every page feel especially relevant.

You can find this—and everything else I’m reading this year—on my running 2026 book list.

Your guide to a stylish, low-stress Vermont girls’ getaway with great skiing, cozy stays, and just enough après.

When a planned ski trip to Schweitzer fell through, we pivoted—fast. No flights, no stress, no TSA chaos. Instead, we booked a charming A-frame, mapped out a few après-ski stops, and headed to Killington, Vermont for a midweek girls’ getaway that delivered far more than expected.

If you’re looking for a no-frills, practical ski escape that balances performance on the mountain with comfort off of it, Killington deserves a spot on your list—especially in spring.

Why Killington Works for a Girls’ Ski Trip

Killington, known as “The Beast of the East,” might not sound like an obvious choice for a refined getaway. But don’t let the name mislead you. This Central Vermont resort offers one of the most reliable and longest ski seasons in the region, thanks to industry-leading snowmaking.

The key advantage? Timing.

Plan a spring ski trip (March–May) and you’ll find:

Fewer crowds

Better restaurant access

Lower lodging rates

Softer, more forgiving snow conditions

With a season that often stretches into May, Killington is one of the safest bets for late-season skiing in the Northeast.

Killington by the Numbers

6 peaks connected across one expansive resort

3,000+ skiable acres (largest in the East)

155 trails for all levels

22 lifts, including high-speed gondolas

3,050 feet of vertical drop

~250 inches of annual snowfall + extensive snowmaking

One of the longest ski seasons in North America

Translation: come for variety, stay for reliability.

Where to Stay: Style vs. Proximity

Killington lodging skews practical over polished, but there are smart options depending on your priorities.

Best for Convenience: Killington Grand Resort Hotel

Closest to the slopes with condo-style accommodations, a full-service spa, and on-site dining. Ideal if you want minimal logistics.

Best Value: Access Road Properties

Further down Killington Road, you’ll find more budget-friendly options—though many are dated. Renovations are slowly catching up with demand.

Best for a Girls’ Escape: Airbnb A-Frame

We opted for a modern A-frame just 15 minutes from the base—and it was the right call. Highlights included:

Private hot tub

Fire pit for après evenings

Fully equipped kitchen

Two comfortable bedrooms (perfect for sharing without sacrificing space)

It delivered the cozy, design-forward vibe that traditional ski lodging often lacks.

Where to Eat in Killington

Dining at ski resorts can be hit-or-miss, but Killington has a few standout options worth planning around.

Dinner Worth Booking: The Foundry

Elevated comfort food, a warm fireplace setting, and a menu that exceeds expectations. The pork chop is a standout.

Casual + Cozy: Yama Ramen

Perfect for takeout after a long ski day. The Thai peanut salad and bao buns are easy wins.

Brunch Stop: Liquid Art

A local favorite for breakfast and light fare. Expect thoughtful dishes and a relaxed atmosphere.

Don’t Miss (En Route): Vermont Sugar & Spice

A classic Vermont stop for pancakes and maple syrup—especially fun during sugaring season.

Coffee & Quick Stops

Sunup Bakery: Great pastries (the gluten-free pumpkin muffin is a standout)

The Skiing Strategy: How to Do Killington Right

Killington is expansive—and that’s both its strength and its challenge. The key is to avoid over-scheduling your ski day.

Smart approach:

Choose 1–2 base areas per day

Avoid excessive traversing

Ski midweek whenever possible

Favorite Zones

Ramshead: Wide, groomed blues and greens—ideal for relaxed cruising

Superstar Area: Reliable spring conditions and classic East Coast terrain

K1 Gondola Access: Central and efficient for first tracks

Insider Tip

Spring skiing here can vary by elevation. If the summit is foggy or icy, move lower—you’ll often find better conditions.

A Note on Pico Mountain

For a quieter, more traditional Vermont experience, spend a day at nearby Pico (included on Killington lift tickets). Fewer crowds, classic trails, and a more relaxed pace make it a hidden gem—especially for intermediate skiers. They close MUCH earlier than Killington, so know that after early April this isn’t an option.

The Future of Killington

Killington is in the midst of a major transformation, including a new village development designed to create a more walkable, integrated resort experience. Expect improved dining, lodging, and family-friendly infrastructure in the coming years.

Final Take: Why It Works

Killington may not have the charm of Stowe or the boutique feel of smaller Vermont towns—but it delivers where it matters.

For a girls’ ski trip that prioritizes skiing, ease, and a touch of comfort, it’s a smart, strategic choice.

Best timing: Early April, midweek
Best for: Intermediate skiers, flexible planners, low-key luxury seekers
Skip if: You want a quaint village or ski-in/ski-out perfection (for now)

With thoughtful planning, Killington transforms from “Beast” to best-kept secret—especially for spring.

Why Portillo Chile Is One of the Best Family Ski Resorts

Unlike larger ski resorts, Portillo is designed for connection. With a guest cap of just 450, this family-friendly ski resort in Chile delivers personalized service, uncrowded slopes, and a relaxed, all-in-one experience.

There’s no need to navigate multiple villages or coordinate complicated logistics. Once you arrive, everything—from dining to ski school—is seamlessly integrated.

For families, that simplicity is a luxury.

What to Expect: A Different Ski Vacation Experience

A Portillo ski trip isn’t about rushing from lift to lift—it’s about embracing a slower, more intentional rhythm.

Ski school starts at 10:30am (no early morning stress)

Daily afternoon tea brings everyone together

Evenings unfold with late dinners and social time

This schedule may feel different at first, but it quickly becomes part of the appeal.

Portillo Dining Culture: Late Dinners and Afternoon Tea

One of the most memorable parts of a Portillo vacation is its food culture.

Afternoon tea—served daily around 5pm—is a signature ritual. Guests gather in the main lodge for house-made cakes and conversation, creating a warm, communal atmosphere.

Dinner begins later than most U.S. ski resorts, with seatings starting around 8pm. Families with younger children dine earlier, while adults linger into the evening.

The result is a more relaxed, European-style dining experience that naturally brings people together.

Where to Stay in Portillo: Best Lodging for Families

When choosing Portillo accommodations, families have several strong options:

Hotel Portillo (the iconic yellow hotel): Best for full-service convenience

Octagon Lodge: Social, casual, and ideal for families

Inca Lodge: Budget-friendly with full resort access

While the main hotel is the most recognizable, many families prefer the more relaxed and social atmosphere of the lodge-style accommodations.

Redefining Luxury at Portillo Ski Resort

If you’re expecting ultra-modern design, Portillo may surprise you. Its aesthetic leans more classic than contemporary—but that’s part of its charm.

Here, luxury means:

No lift lines

Personalized service

Time together as a family

A true sense of community

With only a few hundred guests, Portillo delivers an experience that feels exclusive without being pretentious.

Wellness at Altitude: Spa, Yoga, and Recovery

A Chile ski vacation at altitude calls for thoughtful recovery.

Portillo makes it easy:

Affordable on-site massages (book early)

Daily yoga classes with mountain views

Heated pool and hot tubs for après relaxation

These wellness offerings help balance long ski days and enhance the overall experience.

Best Time to Visit Portillo Chile

Timing your trip can shape your experience:

Early & Late Season (June, September): Quieter, more families

Peak Season (August): Higher energy, more international travelers

Both offer excellent skiing—it simply depends on whether you prefer a calmer or more social atmosphere.

Don’t Miss: Tio Bob’s and Signature Experiences

No Portillo ski vacation guide is complete without mentioning Tio Bob’s.

Located on the mountain above Inca Lake, this restaurant is known for its breathtaking views and relaxed, sun-soaked lunches. It’s less about the menu and more about the moment—one of those experiences that defines the trip.

Other highlights include:

Weekly torchlight parade

Family-friendly ski races

Historic touches throughout the resort

What to Pack for a Portillo Ski Trip

Because Portillo is remote, packing strategically is essential.

Must-haves for your Chile ski trip:

High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm

Cozy après layers

Electrolytes and wellness essentials

A thoughtful packing list ensures you can fully enjoy the experience without needing off-site errands.

Final Thoughts: Is Portillo Worth It?

If you’re looking for the best ski resort in Chile for families, Portillo stands apart.

It’s not just about skiing—it’s about slowing down, connecting, and creating lasting memories in one of the most beautiful mountain settings in the world.

For families who value experience over excess, Portillo delivers something rare: a ski vacation that feels both elevated and deeply personal.

On a recent girls’ ski trip, a friend and I found ourselves doing what book lovers do best—comparing reads. I had This Is Not About Us, she had The Correspondent, and somewhere between the hot tub and our NA brews (we know how to party), we were both completely sold on our respective picks.

Naturally, when I finished mine, I picked up hers. Then I noticed my very bookish mom had the same title in her reading pile. That kind of consensus usually signals I’m on to something. Well, it’s not a surprise that I gobbled up the book and loved the concept and the writing.

About the Book

The Correspondent is an epistolary novel—told through letters and written exchanges—which immediately sets it apart. I know this because I studied the form back in my days at Vanderbilt as an English major–see kids you can use your college major even decades later. It’s a slightly mysterious way to structure a story—you’re only ever getting part of the picture. You have to fill in the gaps, which naturally makes you wonder: can we trust the narrator?

That brings us to one of my favorite literary devices to dust off: the unreliable narrator. Not necessarily someone who is lying outright, but someone whose version of events might be…skewed. Think Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye. It forces you to lean in and really engage with the text instead of letting it just wash over you.

Our narrator—and the writer of most of these letters—is Sybil Van Antwerp, a retired law clerk living in Annapolis (a setting I loved, having grown up nearby in Arnold, Maryland). In her seventies, Sybil is independent, sharp, and more than a little set in her ways. Her days are filled with reading, writing letters, and tending her garden—a quiet, controlled life she seems perfectly content to maintain.

Illness and circumstance begin to force connection, whether she wants it or not. After decades on her own following a divorce, Sybil is pushed into new relationships and reckonings.

And through her letters, we watch her evolve.

What Stayed With Me

This is, at its core, a story about family—particularly the complicated, often imperfect relationship between mothers and daughters. (Yes, I know, I just read something similar—but clearly I’m in a phase.)

As someone who doesn’t have a perfect mother-daughter relationship, this one hit home. There’s something deeply hopeful in the idea that even late in life, there’s still room to understand, to repair, or at least to try.

One of the most striking passages comes from a letter to her daughter:

“You said I am critical of the way you live your life…you said that you hadn’t told me about it because you don’t know how to confide in me…My response to you was that you have never seemed to need me…Well, perhaps you can imagine how it would feel to hear these things from Frannie one day. Terrible.”

It’s raw, defensive, honest—and painfully real.

Why It Works

The structure is part of the magic. Because we only see Sybil through her letters, we’re constantly interpreting—reading tone, questioning intention, filling in emotional gaps. It creates a layered experience that feels more intimate than a traditional narrative.

The characters are thoughtfully drawn, especially the older ones. And while some of the younger perspectives feel lighter by comparison, I appreciated the attempt—particularly with Harry, who becomes a kind of project for Sybil.

There’s also a quiet appreciation for the written word woven throughout:

“Reaching out in correspondence is really one of the original forms of civility…The written word…It is letters. It is books. It is law. It’s all the same.”

As someone who makes a living in words, that resonated.

Final Take

All this is to say: this book is a winner.

It’s thoughtful, character-driven, and quietly powerful in the way it explores connection, aging, and second chances.

Final Thougts

Smart, layered, and deeply human, The Correspondent is a reminder that it’s never too late to revisit the past—or to rewrite how we connect moving forward.

One-line takeaway: Smart, layered, and deeply human, The Correspondent is a reminder that it’s never too late to revisit the past—or to rewrite how we connect moving forward.

If you’re planning a Colorado ski trip and want to skip the crowds without sacrificing terrain, Loveland Ski Area offers a refreshing alternative—just 52 miles from Denver.

As one of Colorado’s longest-operating, independent ski resorts (celebrating nearly 90 years), Loveland delivers something increasingly rare: approachable pricing, authentic mountain culture, and a setup that truly works for families.

Listen First: Inside Loveland Ski Area

Before you plan your trip, get the insider perspective.

In this episode of The Ski Moms Podcast, we talk with Sage McCririck, Loveland’s marketing and events manager, about what makes this mountain so special—from its family-friendly design to its old-school community vibe and spring skiing sweet spot.

From multi-generational ski stories to practical planning tips, it’s a helpful listen whether you’re new to Colorado skiing or looking for a smarter alternative to the bigger resorts.

Why Loveland Works for Families

Loveland strikes a balance that many large resorts miss. It’s accessible without feeling overly commercial, and thoughtfully designed for skiers at every stage.

The resort is divided into two distinct base areas:

Loveland Basin: Home to high-alpine terrain along the Continental Divide, ideal for intermediate and advanced skiers

Loveland Valley: A dedicated beginner area with its own lifts, rentals, and ski school—separate from faster traffic

This layout allows families to split their day strategically—new skiers can build confidence at the Valley while more experienced skiers explore the Basin.

Affordability is another standout. Lift tickets at the Valley start around $50 for adults and $30 for kids, making it one of the most budget-friendly options in Colorado.

An “Old-School” Ski Experience—in the Best Way

Loveland’s independent, family-owned roots shape the experience in ways that feel increasingly meaningful.

“The first thing that comes to mind is old school… a lot of smiling, friendly faces that know each other, families that have raised their kids here.”

There’s a strong sense of continuity here—multi-generational families returning year after year, creating a welcoming, community-driven atmosphere that’s often lost at larger resorts.

When to Go: April Is the Insider Pick

While Loveland’s season runs from early November through early May, spring skiing is where it shines.

“April is definitely my favorite month. You get the best of all the worlds… fresh snow, sunshine, live music on the patio.”

Late-season perks include:

Lower lift ticket prices (especially after early April)

Consistent snow conditions at elevation

A lively après scene with live music every weekend from March through May

It’s a sweet spot for families looking to maximize value and minimize stress.

Small Details That Make a Big Difference

Loveland stands out for its thoughtful, often unexpected touches:

On-mountain BBQ grills (bring your own lunch for a budget-friendly break)

Easy access прямо off I-70—no long detours

Partnerships like the Indy Pass for flexible skiing options

Creative, community-driven events like the Mountaintop Matrimony on Valentine’s Day

These details reinforce the resort’s mission:

“We… want everybody to be able to love this sport and feel like they’re able to participate.”

Where to Stay

Loveland does not have slopeside lodging, but that’s part of its accessibility.

Nearby options include:

Georgetown (closest and most low-key)

Dillon, Silverthorne, and Frisco (great for families)

Keystone and Breckenridge (for a more resort-style stay)

This flexibility allows families to tailor both budget and experience.

Plan Your Trip

Website: Loveland Ski Area

Momtrends Takeaway

Loveland isn’t about flash—it’s about function, access, and community.

For families looking to introduce kids to skiing, stretch their budget, or simply enjoy a more relaxed Colorado experience, it delivers exactly what matters—and nothing that doesn’t.
