Masterful remake of Bob James’s “Nautilus”, with Peter Daou and Dave Darlington on the Rhodes and keyboards, Vidal Davis on the drums, and strings arranged and conducted by Vincent Montana, Jr.

This particular version, with the clean intro and outro, is only available on the 6×12″ box set on Talkin’ Loud. A must-have for MAW fans.

I first discovered Laurindo Almeida via his album with Stan Getz, which I found at the Austin Record Convention several years ago. The first track on that album is one of my favorites, and you can listen to it on Monfresh Sessions #14.

Earlier this week, I looked up Laurindo Almeida on YouTube and came across this great interpretation of Debussy’s piece. It’s from the 1979 album “Chamber Jazz” on Concord Jazz.

Last night, I stumbled upon the Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo 2014 Lecture with Tony Humphries. Around the 7th minute, he describes how he discovered the song “Stand On The Word” by The Celestial Choir on the “Somebody Prayed For This” compilation.

The interviewer then plays that original version from 1982, which is also mistakenly referred to and/or falsely advertised as the “Larry Levan Mix”, when in fact he had nothing to do with it. I have yet to hear a version with Larry Levan’s name attached to it that doesn’t sound exactly like the original 1982 version.

In 1985, Tony Humphries was approached by Eddie O’Loughlin, co-founder of Next Plateau Records, to remix “Stand On The Word”. In the interview, Tony Humphries makes it sound like it was more of a traditional remix without much additional material, but I think he was just being modest because he added some wicked synths and guitars. The only thing I can’t wrap my head around is why the song is pitch shifted up by about a quarter tone.

The only Tony Humphries mix that I have on vinyl is from Louie Vega’s “Choice – A Collection of Classics” compilation, but it’s not mastered very well, so I’ve selected the “Leftside Wobble Edit” for you instead. It’s basically just an extended version of the Tony Humphries “Original Version” mix from the Next Plateau release. Enjoy!

For a long time, I thought this was the “4 Hero Main Mix” because the labels on the record are reversed. Either way, it’s my favorite remix of the late Terry Callier’s interpretation of the “Love Theme” from “Spartacus”, a movie directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1960.
