Hajime Yoshizawa – Verao No Ar

Our next stop in this Brazilian-flavored journey is Japan. Hajime Yoshizawa is one of many Japanese artists who have mastered the NuJazz art form. “Verao No Ar”, featuring the beautiful voice of Catia Werneck, is one of my faves. It was released in 2004 on Especial Records.

I knew this Brazilian JazzFunk workout sounded familiar! When I bought the mp3 in 2010, I didn’t realize it had been sitting on my shelf since 1999 inside the “Mundial Muzique” 3xLP on Guidance. I just had a facepalm moment while looking it up on Discogs.

While the David Morales remixes might be the most popular, I love the Blaze remixes just as much. Going by the FFRR catalog numbers, the Blaze remixes came first. There is a third remix I’m curious about that is only available on a 12″ promo: The Blaze Axis Dub. If you have an audio sample, I’d love to hear it.

Art Blakey Big Band – Tippin’

The 1957 album on Bethlehem Records features quite a lineup of musicians, but “Tippin’”, written by Donald Byrd, only features a quintet: Walter Bishop on piano, Art Blakey on drums, Donald Byrd on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, and Wendell Marshall on bass. My kind of hard bop.

I don’t think this Stevie Wonder production from 1983 is an obscure classic, which is why I’m surprised I had not heard it until 2 years ago on Grant Nelson’s “Housecall“. The original 12″ version is over 10 minutes long, so Enrico Crivellaro, aka Isoul8, aka Volcov, took the best parts and edited it down to about 6 minutes.

The Loud Minority pressed up 300 copies of this edit in October 2010, and it looks like 2 of them are for sale on Discogs.

I heard this for the first time while digging through the bins at the now defunct Rhythm & Culture record store in DC 10 years or so ago. I had not been aware of the original “Ghost Mix” until I heard Doug Smith (of 95 North fame) play both mixes back to back. I then sought out the original single and borrowed Doug’s blend on Monfreshisms 13. The Kerri Chandler remix is still only available on vinyl afaik.

I think we need more Jazz interpretations of classic House tunes. Two years before Christian Prommer released his excellent “Drum Lesson Vol. 1” in 2008, [re:jazz] came up with vocal jazz interpretations of classics such as Coldcut’s “People Hold On”, Ce Ce Peniston’s “Finally”, and Roy Davis Jr.’s “Gabrielle”, sung by the formidable Alice Russell.
