Carmichael Gallery is pleased to present Futuro Anteriore, a group exhibition curated by Simmy Swinder and featuring works by Los Angeles-based artists Sarah Danays, Elyse Graham, Gerit Grimm, Lewis Mauk and Allie Pohl. Through a variety of media, the artists explore the multifarious concept of the artifact and its transfiguration through time. The exhibition will remain on view through March 10, 2011.

The ALAS professional development residency consists of over 100 hours of lectures and one-to-one tuition from the ALAS team and guest lecturers, designed to further artists' understanding of the visual arts sector and support the development of their practice. Supported by regular peer critique and individual tutorials successful applicants will complete 1-2 artworks over a four week period and exhibit them at the gallery in East London. This exhibition will be promoted to an ALAS audience of over 16,000 artists and arts professionals and followed up by a four hour tutorial, focussed on developing achievable personal goals. As well as the opportunity for personal development and bespoke support from successful artists and curators that resident artists will benefit greatly from future collaborations with a talented and ambitious peer group. The residency will take place from Monday June 4 until Monday July 9, 2012 (Monday to Friday, with optional gallery visits each weekend). Successful applicants must attend 80% of lectures, seminars and tutorials in order to participate in the final exhibition.

Having exhibited more than 500 artists and conducted over 250 one-to-one feedback sessions the ALAS residency has been developed by Matt Roberts Arts to offer practitioners, a more thorough understanding of public and commercial opportunities that would benefit them. Following six years of intensive research into galleries and not-for-profit institutions all over the world they believe that they are in a unique position to support artists in this manner. There is a fee of £450 (payable in up to three installments) which covers all studio, lecturing and exhibition costs but not accommodation or living expenses. This represents significant value for money as it equates to less than £5 per hour of taught time. David Kordansky Gallery is very pleased to announce The Strange Young Neighbours, a solo exhibition by Pietro Roccasalva. The show is Roccasalva's first with the gallery, as well as his first solo gallery exhibition in the United States. It will include paintings, drawings, a neon work, and a large-scale sculptural installation that will serve as the site for a tableau vivant performance. The performance will take place on Saturday, February 11th, beginning at 11 h and continuing until the end of the opening reception at 21 h.

Roccasalva explores the potential for art objects to become active agents of simulacrum, sites where the animate and inanimate worlds undergo profound crossing. Painting serves as the orbital center for a practice that includes sculpture, performance, and video, and that has increasingly come to represent a self-contained universe of poetic narratives and philosophical inquiries. Roccasalva has referred to his paintings as 'microchips', devices that organize an ever-expanding network of processes and allusions. Synthesizing compositional strategies drawn from religious iconography, modernist collage, and digital distortion, and skillfully rendered over months and even years, the figures in the paintings are both deeply familiar and impossibly strange. They freeze the gaze and conjure the sense that though artworks can never be fully understood, they are caught with their viewers in an endless feedback loop of exchanged signification.

The Strange Young Neighbours borrows its title from a standalone tale in Goethe's 1809 novel Elective Affinities. In the story, a near-catastrophic drowning plays a key role in uniting a young couple destined to be together since childhood. Though the onset of adulthood and its misunderstood passions temporarily drive them apart, when the girl jumps from a moving boat and the boy saves her, they finally realize that they are in fact meant to be married.

This tale is just one of the texts that inform Just Married Machine, a major sculptural installation that occupies the center of the gallery and sets the stage for a series of new paintings as well as the tableau vivant. A wooden boat suggests direct connection to Goethe's narrative, but the other objects suggest that additional processes are at play. In fact, the scene is also based on a still/still life taken from the short Pasolini film La Ricotta. Roccasalva has allowed a series of visual slippages to transform objects depicted in what is essentially a traditional nature morte into fully realized, life-sized objects: a shallow tray becomes the mandolin-shaped boat, an overturned basket becomes the hot air balloon, and heads of garlic are translated, via a humorous visual 'misunderstanding', into a sculpture that resembles a crown of toilets. The work's most profound slippage, however, takes place between genres as the nature morte is repositioned within the realm of living things. For instance, a bottle in the La Ricotta still life is reinterpreted as a woman; accordingly, on the day of the opening, an actual married couple will inhabit Just Married Machine.

January 12 until February 25, 2012 // FRIEDRICH PETZEL GALLERY // New York

Friedrich Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce "Batman Returns," the third exhibition of new work by the New York-based artist Joyce Pensato. An illustrated catalogue, published by 38th Street Publishers with an accompanying essay by Ira G. Wool, is available on the occasion of the exhibition. The book commemorates the 32 years that the artist worked in her Olive Street studio in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, before re-locating to a new space in the spring of 2011.

For this exhibition, Joyce Pensato uses "Batman" as the predominant subject and inspiration for her paintings. "Batman" is a motif that first appeared in Pensato's drawings as early as the mid-1970's and has been used by the artist only periodically since, the last "Batman" painting, as singular work, having been executed in 1996. Pensato's resurrection of this iconic image sixteen years later marks an additional shift in her practice as it will be the first time that she has added various colors to what until now has been a strictly black, white and silver painting palette. Pastel color has played a role in Pensato's drawings over the years, but color in the paintings is new, and as with her drawings, the color element marks a layer within, simultaneously erased and darkened by the profuse and continual saturation of black and white enamel.

January 18 until February 26, 2012 // featuring : Phoebe Cummings, Glithero & Tracey Rowledge // JERWOOD VISUAL ARTS // London

Formed thoughts explores the fundamental collaboration between maker and material in the forming of concepts and works. Curator Clare Twomey brings together work by artists Phoebe Cummings, Glithero (Tim Simpson & Sarah van Gameren) and Tracey Rowledge to explore the active dialogue that materials provoke in the conception of new work and in its physical formation.

Works on display include new work in Glithero's Burn Burn Burn series (previous work pictured), in which a flame travels over a path of flammable screen-printed paint, leaving behind it a charcoal trace which reveals the memory of a moment that has already passed. Phoebe Cummings' Vanitas explores the possibilities of clay as a raw material, disregarding notions of ceramics as a studio-based practice and as permanent possessions. Her installation will be constructed on site at Jerwood Space, where the work will be left to disintegrate and be broken down over the course of the exhibition. Tracey Rowledge will create new work for the exhibition, drawing directly onto the gallery wall over a 10-day period. Her solid graphite wall drawing, Surface, creates a reflective plane that captures and subdues the light and the movement in the gallery space. @mondomedeusah
