I’ve never questioned his ability, but whenever I see something I don’t understand on a tax return, I ask about it, for the simple sake that I want to understand things.

We re-financed our mortgage last year, so when I was estimating our tax return, I entered the closing costs, but when our tax return came back, this wasn’t on here. Only a small portion was.

I knew he was correct. He always is. So, I didn’t sweat it and in fact I waited until after tax season was done before I dropped him an e-mail asking why the closing costs were nowhere to be found.

He wrote back explaining that for a re-finance, the deduction is spread out over the original term of the loan. Our deductible closing costs were roughly $1,200 for the 15-year mortgage, meaning that we’ll see roughly $80 written off each year for the next 15 years. In fact, there was $20 written off in 201, which makes sense given that we re-financed with three months left in the year.

(FYI: For an original mortgage on the property, you can write off the entire closing amount for the year in which the closing took place.)

Good to know!

When it comes to doing taxes, I know that I could likely enter the big stuff. But, honestly, it’s the little stuff like this which makes me really, really glad that we have someone do our taxes.

And not just any someone, but someone we completely trust.

Do you have someone do your taxes? Did you know about the re-finance amortization requirement when it comes to writing off the closing costs?

There are hundreds of cities to consider for a trip to Asia. However, there are a few that stand out among the rest as excellent places to get a full dose of culture.

Shanghai

Shanghai is a huge metropolis that has everything China has to offer and more. If your time is limited, but you want to get the best experience of Chinese culture, then Shanghai is surely the way to do it. Book into a Shanghai hostel to save money as there is plenty to do and see. Perhaps you’re after the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then get down to the markets, where the smell of deep-fried soy is unmistakable. As for architecture, you’ll find old buildings like the Jing’an Temple nestled among shining modern towers, and Western-style buildings speak to its eclectic influences. The city is old, and it has held its cultural and political importance since the 1930s. It is the place to get to know China.

Image: Jing’an Temple. Credit: by kanegen

Tokyo

Go across the Sea of Japan to spend some time in the planet’s largest city, Tokyo. The Japanese capital is also its cultural and architectural flagship. All the sushi you can hope for, while staying in capsule hotels, is waiting for you. There’s the Imperial Palace Gardens to enjoy, along with dozens of other cultural sites, including several Shinto shrines. The skyline is beautiful, and finding top points for taking some amazing pictures is a worthwhile activity. Nearby nature sites and parks are plentiful, and distant snow-capped mountains make for a soothing backdrop to an energetic city.

Image: Sushi. Credit: by Francisco Antunes

Singapore

In Southeast Asia travelers have the opportunity to visit Singapore, a small and country that offers a stark contrast to its neighbors. The city’s main attraction is its level-headed diversity, from Malay to Chinese and Tamil. Different districts will surprise you, especially when you find a mosque beside a temple. It is also a wonderful place to experiment in diverse cuisines. One night you might be enjoying chili crab, and the next you’ll be delving into the tastiness of Laksa or satay. Culturally, Singapore is set apart with so much diversity and travellers will find the city packed with contemporary and stylish hostels to choose from

Image: Singapore. Credit: by jjcb.

Kuala Lumpur

Nearby Kuala Lumpur presents an entirely different cultural exhibition. It shares some traits with its neighbor, such as the apt combination of shiny high rises and shack-like market streets. Kuala Lumpur is remarkable also for its newness, as only 150 years previous it was no more than a village. The real delight is in wandering aimlessly and observing the daily goings-on of a new capital. The best cultural experience to be had is gastronomic. Head to the Golden Triangle to find restaurants, or otherwise hang out beside the street Mamuk stalls—the pickings are incredible.

Image: Street food. Credit: by j.o.h.n. walker

Bangkok

Finally, a list of Asia’s best cultural cities would not be complete without mention of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. Although it shares the attributes of other grand metropolises, it boasts some of the greatest architectural and cultural diversity in the region. You’ll find palaces mixed with modern structures, prime among them the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. You’ll also find plenty of museums and cultural centers throughout the city. One of the most attractive things about Bangkok is its canals, and a boat ride through them is a sure way to get that feeling of immersion.

Image: Grand Palace. Credit: by MadeByMark

There are so many more Asian cities to visit, but keep in mind that these listed here are among the best, and are well-serviced by buses or trains to surrounding villages and towns.

I first laughed when I heard chatter about Pinterest. For those who don’t know, it’s a social media outlet where you share images rather than statuses. It’s really caught on with women, as many women have found things like recipes, fashion tips, and other things that (not to be sexist) generally aren’t as interesting to men as they are to women. I thought ‘Oh, just another passing fad’.

Soon, I started seeing my wife sitting in front of the computer for long stretches at a time, failing to answer roughly two-thirds of questions directed her way. When I probed to find out what was the new source of interest, it turns out she had come across Pinterest.

Now, I have only seen Pinterest in passing, but I have to say, having one person in our household has been a good thing.

My wife has found some pretty awesome recipes. I don’t have the links for them but I know they should be easy enough to find. Some examples of yummy food we’ve had:

Chocolate chip cookies that are softer than usual after you add pudding to the mix

Fiesta rice that is similar (and even better) than the rice you get at Chipotle

Pulled chicken that we’ll be serving at our daughter’s first birthday party.

She’s also got some wonderful decorating ideas for the aforementioned party, and the great thing is that she’s found stuff that is frugal, fun and easy, yet with very unique results.

Again, I don’t have a Pinterest account and have no interest (I keep using that rhyme, which is fun) but I think as long as someone in your house has a Pinterest account, that should be sufficient.

Do you use Pinterest or know someone that does? Has it led you to any frugal ideas?

Last week I wrote about how the old desktop computer I’ve had for roughly eight years looked like it might be done.

Turns out, she’s got a little big of life left in her.

Thanks to my dad (thanks, dad!), who has a nice stash of computer equipment, I was able to get it up and running by replacing the video card.

There was a series of lights on the back of the computer that I had neglected to see, but as it turns out, actually gives you the code of the likely problem in the event of a system problem. The light code pointed right to the video card.

The new card was a cinch to install and after downloading new drivers, I was back in business.

I think the computer is still on its way out, though. The fan keeps getting noisier and noisier. And after all this, one of my USB drives seemed to be conflicting with my wireless keyboard / mouse set, allowing only one or the other to work at a time. Maybe I just need to play with the configuration of the cables. In any case, that’s not so much a big deal, and I can always move my backup procedures to another working computer.

Still, it’s nice to be able to extend the life just a little bit longer. Knock on wood, but I’ve always had pretty good luck with electronic items around the house, with a TV running for fifteen years and counting, the aforementioned desktop on eight years, and a couple of laptops probably six and four years old that are holding up reasonably well.

What are your predictions on how much longer the old desktop has in it? Any guesses?

If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident or an accident at someone’s home or business, one of the first things you must do is find an injury attorney. Medical bills are a predominant reason behind many personal bankruptcy filings. Don’t let this happen to you. If you find an injury attorney, he will work to make sure you get the medical treatment and financial compensation you deserve.

Medical bills, car repairs and lost work time are just a few ways personal injury can bankrupt you if you do not have legal assistance. Lost work time lowers your income which can make it difficult if not impossible to pay credit card bills, student loans, utilities, food and rent. Some people file Chapter 7 bankruptcy to get relief from all of these obligations. However, do not file bankruptcy lightly because this decision will follow you around for the rest of your life and negatively affect your credit rating for 10 years.

When you find an injury attorney who is reputable, he will not ask you for any money upfront. Instead, he works on a contingency. If you do not get money, he does not get paid. Obviously lawyers will not take just any frivolous case because if you lose, they lose valuable time and money due to office expenses such as mailing, phone calls and having staff members research your case.

Be honest with your personal injury attorney, because the other party will discover your financial secrets. If you have sued people or companies before, your lawyer needs to know in advance. Otherwise, the other party could try to use that against you and make you look like someone who is just interested in easy money. Anyone who is legitimately injured knows that money cannot make up for most types of pain and suffering, but unfortunately some people have chosen to exaggerate their injuries to try to get money from others.

Promptly answer all of your lawyer’s requests for information. In some cases, you might have to see another doctor. You must provide the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all medical providers as well as any witnesses to the accident in which you were injured.

Hopefully your attorney can get a settlement without going to court, but you must be prepared to go to trial if necessary. Although stressful, fighting for your rights is always a worthwhile cause.

Today is my wife’s birthday and it’s a big one, so I though I have a million, I thought I’d put thirty reasons I absolutely love my wife:

She loves ice cream almost as much as I do.

She taught me to enjoy eating meals out on the deck.

She puts her children and family first.

She makes me laugh every day.

I love when she laughs.

She regularly laughs at my jokes.

She loves taking walks with me and the kids.

She introduced me to camping, which I know love doing.

When she gets mad at me, she never holds her anger for long.

She’s the most amazing mother I could ever hope for to my kids.

I love falling asleep next to her.

And waking up next to her.

The way we met mirrored the way two characters met in my favorite movie (Swingers)

She gives wonderful hugs.

And even better kisses.

The way she looks when she doesn’t know I’m looking at her.

She loves to celebrate holidays and seasons. All of them.

She gives me a much needed sense of fashion (which I don’t have)

She keeps me feeling young.

She keeps our family eating healthy without being a health nut.

She makes our house a real home.

She makes me want to be a better person.

She always accepts my apology after I do something dumb.

She loves taking pictures to capture our memories.

She is an awesome coupon cutter!

She saw me through two job losses and stuck with me and believed in me.

She strives to make the best chocolate chip cookies ever!

She doesn’t love cats but she loves mine because they’re mine.

Everything is more fun with her.

She takes my breath away.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Beagle! I love you lots!

The economy has been recovering from the lows in 2008 and 2009. Few would argue this.

Unemployment rates were well over 10% at the time.

Housing prices were continuing to fall. Mortgage foreclosures were on the rise and getting worse by the month. Salaries were flat or falling.

For awhile, the stock market was in a free fall.

It’s gotten better. Unemployment is around 8%, a modest improvement.

Housing prices in most metropolitan areas have started to rise, or at the very worse, have flattened. Companies, for the first time in a few years, reported that they were planning on increases wages.

Some people don’t think this enough.

Recovery is typically defined when we get back to 6-7% unemployment, and the growth in spending is at a faster rate than what we’re currently seeing. I’ve seen some articles written where the slow path to recovery seems to indicate that we aren’t really even recovering, and that we could slip back into a recession at any point. I think this fear has a lot to do with the skitishness on Wall Street.

Quite honestly, I don’t believe any of this is really true.

When you look at the fundamentals of what led to the Great Recession, I truly believe it was in the works for 20 years. Maybe I’m jaded because that’s right around the age that I was old enough to understand and start paying attention to the economy and global events, and there’s one that sticks out in my mind:

NAFTA.

That’s right, the good old North American Free Trade Agreement. Essentially opening up our borders to Canada, and more importantly, Mexico.

I remember when I first heard about NAFTA and what it was going to do I thought to myself “That sounds like jobs might go away. I wonder how that’s going to work.”

Well, they told us that it would work by not just taking jobs away, but re-creating them in other areas as the global economy expanded.

Uh-huh, sure, I thought. It didn’t make a lot of sense to me, and I don’t think what they promised would happen actually happened.

Except for the jobs leaving part. That did happen.

Unfortunately, it didn’t mean that we formed a bunch of new jobs. It didn’t mean that the economies of other countries that got those jobs created net new jobs elsewhere, or if it did, that they necessarily were created here.

Long and short, we lost a lot of manufacturing jobs and that…

Wait, let me stop because there’s more to it than just that. After NAFTA, many plants and various other manufacturing activities shut down. That affected the people that worked there, but it also affected a lot of other businesses. The ripple effect of a plant closing means that anybody else working to support that plant also lost their job, and so on down the line. A plant could have had 500 workers, but in the end, 1,000 people (or more) could have been without a job when those jobs got ‘outsourced’. So this job loss was not such a small thing, and even if we became more technically savvy, there just wasn’t enough jobs (or skill for those displaced workers) to get those 1,000 jobs back.

But back to my point,

We lost a lot of manufacturing jobs and they weren’t coming back. We also got a lot better at things that we were doing, so the manufacturing jobs we kept, as well as jobs in all sorts of industries, became less plentiful because we could use technology to find ways of doing more with less people.

Usually a great thing, but not if you’re the people that were no longer needed.

In the end, all of this technology and all this improvement led to a gradual erosion of our job market and our economy.

However, we were able to hide it for about 15 years or so.

We hid it by slowly increasing government spending. They put some of those people back to work.

We hid it by a tech bubble in the late 1990′s, where wealth was created overnight.

When that didn’t stick, we moved on to real estate. Values skyrocketed and people pulled cash out of thin air.

All of this worked to hide the fact that we had a lot more people around that didn’t have as much to do.

Eventually, the bottom fell out, and for the first time in almost two decades, we’re having to deal with the repercussions of all this.

We can’t have the government hire our way out.

We can’t use the stock market or the real estate market as our way out.

We aren’t going to suddenly re-discover our way back to the top of manufacturing.

In other words, this recovery is going to have to be based on something real.

And after essentially twenty years of hiding the fact that the economy has been slowing, it’s going to take time.

A lot of time.

Anybody hoping for a quick fix is hoping that we create a new bubble, because from the way I see it, a real recovery is going to take a long time.

I don’t think we have to consider a slow recovery any sort of lost period. Some will say that if it takes ten years to recover, that would be a lost decade.

I respectfully disagree.

I would call that a rediscovery decade.

Because what that would mean, if we did it correctly, is that we re-built a true economic foundation. The foundations which we’ve been trying to build on for most of my adult life have been weak and non-existent. I would love, for the first time as an adult, to see an economy built on real fundamentals, not built on a bubble.

And if it takes time to get there, that’s fine. Because if we take the time to let the economy build itself the right way, it will not crumble so easily and we will not have the problems that come about virtually overnight as we’ve seen during the last couple downturns.

Slow and steady growth might not be sexy. It might not look great on paper for the people who look only at six or twelve month charts, but if you want an economy that we can truly believe in again, you have to give it time.

For the sake of the next twenty years, please, no more quick fixes.

Many people associate the onset of financial problems with a big event.

A job loss. A major health issue. A catastrophe.

These are all major events and could very well lead to financial troubles. However, it’s not just the major things you have to watch out for and prevent against.

In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I’m guessing that a majority of people in financial trouble got that way without having any major things. Instead, it was just a culmination of little things that added up without them knowing.

My Work Computer

Let me use my work laptop as an example.

I started here in 2006 and was granted a brand new laptop. As with all computers, it worked great but within a few years was showing it’s age. It had gone through a couple of batteries, it was getting slower, had a cracked edge around the outside of the case, and just other general problems that come about from a device that’s used all the time.

So, I was pretty happy when they replaced it with a brand new laptop last summer. Just as with the first one it was great. It booted up in no time, it ran fast, it had better applications, and was overall much better.

After awhile, it didn’t boot up just as fast, but I figure that’s normal. As you install more programs, it inevitably slows the system down a degree or two.

Closing down applications sometimes led to an error message.

One day, Firefox went to do an upgrade and although everything went well during the process, the program crashed upon start. I found a workaround that involved going back a few versions. Not ideal, but it worked.

Then, applications started taking more memory than they should. I am pretty savvy so when I see Excel and Firefox taking hundreds of megabytes of memory every couple of hours, I knew something was wrong.

Eventually, I hit my limit. I put a work order in to get the thing re-imaged. I actually probably waited too long simply out of embarrassment, since I’m an IT guy and prided myself on always keeping my computers clean.

Turned out, it wasn’t anything I had done. The stupid machine had a bad hard drive. They always run a diagnostic check, and the hard drive failed. They replaced it and put a new image on and it worked great.

Back to the point

This leads me back to the point and back into the financial trouble discussion I started with.

See, I let things progress and get to the point where the computer was unusable, simply because everything that happened was small. If the thing had refused to power on or boot up or done a more recognizable ‘crash’, it would have been addressed and fixed a lot sooner.

That can be the same pattern when it comes to getting into financial trouble.

If you get fired and lose all your income, you can pretty well tell that you might hit financial trouble.

But, if you miss a payment, do you see yourself in trouble? If you forget to transfer money and get hit with some overdraft fees, will you say you’re in trouble? If you buy a TV or table and don’t pay off the balance, are you in trouble?

Get where I’m going with this?

You might not be in trouble by doing one of those things, but what if you do them all together in order?

You might say, well at a certain point you’ll recognize that you’re in trouble.

Yeah, but only after it’s gotten to where you’re really in trouble.

See, when it’s all small things like that, we’ll kid ourselves into thinking ‘Ah, no big deal’.

If we do something minor that’s a red flag, we’ll do it. We might even recognize that it’s a bad thing. We might promise ourselves not to do it again. We will likely recognize that this is opposite of what we want in terms of financial health.

Then, the next time we do something, we’ll say the same thing. But, here’s the kicker. We’ll use the aftermath of the first bad decision as the baseline for the second bad decision.

This means that we’ll only allow ourselves to see the latest ‘bad thing’ as bad. We will protect ourselves from seeing the total sum of our bad decisions. We’ll forget the bad decision we made in the past as a way to justify to ourselves that the bad decision we just made might not be so bad.

Bad move.

This can lead to a cycle where you’re making lots and lots of little bad decisions. You fool yourselves into thinking that it’s not so bad, until one day you look around and you realize you’re screwed.

And it didn’t take a job loss or a major medical expense. When those things happen, you’ll recognize immediately the trouble this can get into, where the ‘smaller trouble’ trap can actually lead you into bigger trouble.

So, what to do?

Recognize that you might be in trouble. Look at any negative financial situation for what it means individually but also what it might mean if there’s a pattern or if it’s part of a cluster of bad things that have happened.

Evaluate your personal situation compared to yesterday, six months ago, and a year ago. Honestly, you can substitute any ‘date’ here, but the point is to keep an eye on how things are shaping up for you based on multiple points in the past. This will let you recognize issues in the long term that you might miss if you’re focused only in the short term.

Be honest with yourself. You might not want to admit that you’re heading down the wrong path. Few people do. But, you’re going to have to figure it out at some point. Don’t wait to hit rock bottom. Be honest with yourself now.

Change. Figure out what you need to do to change. Ask for help. Look for advice. Just put a stop to the little things that are getting you opposite of where you need to be.

Have you ever had a bunch of little things happen that you didn’t even know had turned into a big problem until it was too late?

In March, I got assigned to a temporary assignment at work. Instead of working at my office, which is only two and a half miles from my home, I was doing site assessments all over the Metro Detroit area. It was good work, it was on a high visibility project, and it let me see up front what we actually do, versus the back-end support we provide in the office, so it was a pretty positive experience.

One of the things I had to adjust was my morning coffee. My standard routine at the office was that I would drink from the ‘free coffee’ provided, but would add in my own half-and-half. When I started the assignment, I started making my own coffee at home to take with me every morning. Typically I would only make coffee at home on the weekends or on days when I’m off. I buy pre-ground Columbian Coffee from Costco. It’s $15 for a really big can. It would typically last about four months, meaning I would spend about $45 per year on coffee.

After finishing up my assignment, I went back to work and the first day, went back to my old routine, and realized something.

The coffee is horrible.

It’s not the worst I’ve ever had for work coffee, but even so, it’s just not…good.

Six weeks away from the ‘free stuff’ turned me into a bit of a coffee snob. I realized I could have re-adjusted and probably gotten used to the free stuff, but I realized something.

I didn’t want to.

So, I have started bringing some coffee from home. When I pack my lunch, I scoop out enough for the next day, and I make some coffee from home once I get to work. I only make enough for me to drink my two mugs per day. Work has filters (or I have some left over from an old coffee machine) and they have the coffee maker, so all that’s different is that I’m providing the coffee. Since I get to work really early, I don’t have to worry about anybody stealing my coffee while it’s being made.

I estimate that this will require me to buy two additional cans per year. That’s $30, working out to an extra $2.50 per month.

Some people spend that every day on a cup of coffee from Starbucks, so adding that to my budget for the sake of having coffee I truly enjoy is worth it to me. I still think I’m being frugal in that I’m only making a partial pot per day to make only what I need, and I’m still using the company supplies and electricity.

Have you ever justified spending a little more on a small indulgence?

One of my predictions for 2012 was that Wall Street and the financial markets would begin to ignore the European financial crisis, where Greece and possibly others essentially are having a hard time paying all the money that they’ve borrowed throughout the years. Last year the market would get hammered on days where anybody expressed a smidgen of fear of something bad happening.

I thought that the dust would settle and that Wall Street would move on.

I was wrong.

For a while in the beginning part of the year, the news about Europe was pretty quiet. Wall Street did actually shrug off a lot of news, but would still have the occasional freak out about Europe. In the last couple of weeks, the news is suddenly back out and Wall Street has been freaking out in earnest once again.

I believe they actually love it.

Here’s why.

I believe in conspiracy when it comes to the stock market. I don’t trust people that do trading, and I think that there is dishonesty, manipulation, and insider trading that goes on all the time. I believe in the efficient market theory on paper, but in practice, there’s no way.

And, I think traders use Europe as a way to cover up the dishonesty that prevails in Wall Street.

Simply put, Wall Street can use Europe as a scapegoat to do anything that they want and blame ‘Europe fears’.

I’ve watched earnings reports pretty regularly. One theme that I’ve seen happen lately is that a company will blow out earnings. I mean beyond what was likely priced in, as I know pricing stuff like this in does take place. I’m talking 40 cents a share where ‘the Street’ might have predicted 12 cents a share.

The stock will even rise for a little bit in pre-market trading and then at the bell.

Look what just happened. Investors, many whom are likely individual investors (as opposed to institutional investors) just saw great news and they saw the stock start to rise. They buy in, hoping to ride the wave, not knowing that the sharks on the other side of their high speed trading computers, are snickering and reeling them in.

Suddenly the bottom drops off. That stock that just tripled expected earnings suddenly gives back the money it made at the open and actually goes down, often by a few percent.

Individual investors just got taken for a ride. Who do you think took that money and put it in their own pockets?

The crooks on Wall Street.

And when they’re asked about it, they say ‘Well, yeah, they beat earnings, but uh…we’re worried about their growth. You know, because of the whole Europe situation at all.’

They might not snicker out loud or on the e-mail that they use to publish this, but trust me, they are.

And, that, is why I was wrong about Europe and the effect it would have on Wall Street. Because while the news might be bad and there might be trouble, Wall Street has latched on as a way to skim (scam) some additional profits off the backs of investors just trying to do the right thing.

Do you think Wall Street operates on the up-and-up?
