DoubleTwist is at its core a free music jukebox that offers content syncing to a variety of portable devices, including the BlackBerry, the PSP, and the iPod, as well as pretty much anything that can mount in Universal Mass Storage mode. One of the main draws of the program is that it can take your iTunes library and sync it to a variety of non-iPod players, an important feature for anyone who has ditched the ubiquitous device in favor of a music phone or other MP3 player.

In addition to acting as a music management app compatible with a variety of devices, the jukebox offers built-in support for Amazon MP3 Store purchases, which is in line with the company's goal to offer consumers choice when it comes to digital music management. Plus, the service includes a podcast aggregator for easily finding and subscribing to a variety of popular spoken-word content. More recently, DoubleTwist added an Android Market, which lets you browse apps and then use a bar code scanner to download them via your phone's camera. All of these features work incredibly well, though our praise for performance ends there.

We connected a variety of devices to DoubleTwist with varying results. It recognized our Sony Walkman effortlessly, though the time it took to sync just 150MB of content was excessive during testing. The program would not recognize our Motorola Droid as anything more than a generic USB device, and as such, we were unable to sync any media to the phone. Our other gripe has to do with music importing: the software imported multiple duplicates of nearly every song in our library, despite the fact they currently only live in one folder. This isn't a deal-breaker, but it does make the jukebox look unnecessarily cluttered.

DoubleTwist also incorporates automatic video transcoding for a lot of the supported devices, which is the feature that initially drew us to the software. However, the functionality is not without its pitfalls, such as the fact that the video transcoding--done during the syncing process--takes forever. Conversion speed was roughly two times the normal speed, so a 90-minute movie took 50 minutes or so to encode and transfer. Still, considering DoubleTwist offers this feature for free and integrates it so simply, we're willing to forgive the sluggishness.

Gripes aside, DoubleTwist delivers as advertised, and it certainly will be a useful solution for a lot of people. It offers a seamless connection with iTunes and lets users easily transfer that content to non-iPod devices. It also successfully converts video to a variety of formats suitable for whatever device is connected, and the process is invisible to the user, which makes it extremely straightforward--a lovely thing, considering the pain that is digital video formatting. Plus, the app includes integrated buttons for automatically publishing photos and videos to Flickr and YouTube.

DoubleTwist isn't without some flaws, but it gets the job done and it does it for free, so it's definitely worth checking out.

What makes RoR different to most simulators is its unique soft-body physics: vehicles chassis and wheels are simulated in real-time as flexible objects, giving the simulation an extremely accurate behavior, while allowing the vehicles to be simply specified by their structural composition, as a network of interconnected nodes (forming the chassis and the wheels). Crashing into walls or terrain can permanently deform a vehicle in a realistic manner. In addition to its unique soft-body physics, RoR also features an advanced flight model based on blade element theory, allowing the accurate simulation of any airplane, base on their physical dimensions and wing airfoils. Cash Register POS (DHPOS)

DHPOS is freeware software that will convert any DOS or Windows computer into a fully functional cash register / point of sale(POS) system.

This project was originally started (2001) by Dale Harris as a way to alleviate boredom one summer and to prove to himself that he could write a better POS system than the professionally written POS software that he was forced to use in the chain store that he worked at. After completing the software he uploaded it to his website for anyone to download for free.

Interest was immediate. Soon users worldwide were downloading the software and emailing him with suggestions for new features and other ways to improve it. Many of these suggestions have been added to the software and new versions come out with new features several times a year (as of 2007).

The project continues because, according to its author, it is needed. While large corporations can afford to pay for expensive POS software many small and medium enterprises cannot. A plain cash register may be affordable for them but it will not provide the information that modern businesses must have to compete.

The current version (2007) of the software has hundreds of features that make it suitable for most small to medium enterprises. The major limitations are a maximum 13,000 different items in the stock table and a maximum of 60 lines in a sale. This would make it unsuitable for a large grocery store, bookstore, or hardware store. The software will drive receipt printers, cash drawers, pole displays , barcode readers and other POS hardware.

As of 2007 there have been over 200,000 downloads of this software (to more than 60 countries) from the main website, and it can be also downloaded from many other freeware websites. Considering that users may receive the program directly from others, instead of downloading it, there is no reliable way to estimate the number of computers that are running it.

BZFlag (an abbreviation for Battle Zone capture the Flag) is an online, multiplayer video game first released in 2007. It is a first-person tank shooting game, similar to Battlezone. It was originally written by Chris Schoeneman for SGI computers running IRIX, and has been ported to other platforms including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, BSD and Solaris.

In a game of BZFlag, players drive around tanks, viewed from a first-person view, in a server-defined world (also known as a "map"), which can be modified. Tanks have the ability to drive through other tanks, but cannot travel through buildings or other world objects. The basic objective is to destroy opponents' tanks, which are tanks of another team's color. For example, green tanks are supposed to try to destroy red, purple, blue, and rogue tanks. Rogue tanks do not have any allegiances to a certain team and are therefore able to kill anybody.

There are styles of game play that modify the objective. Styles are server-based, as the server operator chooses what style to host. If there is no special style indicated by the server owner, the only objective is the above (to simply kill opponent tanks), it is called a "free for all", or "FFA" for short. There are three other objectives and corresponding styles (four in total): a style called "capture-the-flag" (or "CTF" for short) in which tanks try to pick up an opponent's flag and bring to its own home base (a small area marked with the team's color that simply is the home of a team), a style called "rabbit chase" in which the objective is to have every hunter (colored red and yellow)tank try to destroy a particular white tank, called the "rabbit," and a style called "King of the Hill," in which the tanks attempt to stay in a certain area for 30 seconds without being killed. If they succeed, they're "The King of the Hill." Servers can change the game mode and have custom maps made to fit the properties of the game. Certain thresholds are used to catch malicious players and kick them off the server, as well as message filters, and an entire collection of other anti-cheating features. There are around 250 servers active at any given time (although only about 10-20% have active players most of the time).

I stumbled upon BZFlag and I now play at least twice a day during the work week and at least once during the weekend. Here’s the premise:
You: A tank
Goal: Blast your co-workers into smithereens

Sounds fun eh? The game consists of tanks navigating around a world of boxes and pyramids. The basic controls are arrow keys or mouse for moving, mouse button for shooting and tab for jumping. You have 3 cannon shots at any given time. Once the blast detonates, your tank reloads. (all settings and controls can be changed to your liking) Sounds like a glorified Combat game from the Atari 2600 days right?

But it’s more than that. The minimal graphics create a world that is just enough to pull you in and not enough to choke your processor. This is a great example of how you could have the most realistic type of graphics but if it isn’t fun, you won’t play it. There are many different types of games you can play. You could play a straight out melee where it’s every tank for themselves. There’s also a capture the flag game where you team up with tanks.

So why the Flag in BZFlag? Perhaps the most amusing part of this game is the introduction of Super Flags. Super Flags are white flags interspersed around the playing field. Picking up a flag can give you special weapons are powers. You can score a Guided Missile where you lock your opponent in the scope and a heat-seeking missile hunts them down. You could also land the coveted Oscillation Overthruster which allows you to drive through the boxes. But there are bad flags too and you don’t know where they are until you find one. These flags can cause your scanner to be jammed, they could make you extremely obese, or they could limit you to only making left hand turns.

The best part of BZFlag is that it is open sourced. What does this mean? It means that anyone who is compelled to sit down and hack the coding can create new weapons, behaviors, and battlefields. I’m not one of those people but after joining a game on the internet, I’m glad other people are. Online, there are battles that are happening right now that contain multi-leveled worlds and game play so fast you’ll get killed every 5 seconds. These guys are serious BZFlaggers.
