Let Us Find Good Eats: Spicy Cuisine Szechuan:

Cuisine Szechuan excites lots of Montreal eaters and tourists because of its delicious and spicy food.

Although this has been a previous venture before the talk of gathering fun memories and finding good eats, I thought it’d be fun to post this since we had a very hilarious adventure.

Place Viger Station and Chateau Viger, late 1940s

An old map of Montreal will follow …

For international readers: Viger is pronounced VEE-zjay.

The Canadian Pacific’s first station in Montreal was “Quebec Gate Barracks” - at the corner of Berri and Notre Dame. This was where the first transcontinental train for the west departed. In 1890, the station’s name was changed to Dalhousie Square - after the nearby public square - the land for the latter had been donated by Governor General Dalhousie in 1821.

Viger Gardens were named in memory of Denis Viger, whose widow Charlotte- Perrine Cherrier donated the original parcel of land in 1818. Later, a cousin of Montreal’s first mayor Jacques Viger was one of many who donated additional land for the gardens and public square which eventually became Place Viger.

A major urban fire in 1852 razed the area and neighbouring wards … The refurbished Viger Gardens were opened in 1860. ’First Mayor Jacques Viger’ had died in 1858, so Denis Viger was probably forgotten about by this point. Place Viger (Square) was completed and opened in 1867.

In August 1898, Chateau Viger (the CPR ‘Loire Valley chateau-style building’ behind) was opened by CPR President Van Horne. It housed railway station facilities on its ground floor. An important element of this location was Place Viger’s proximity to the Victoria Pier - the mooring point for Canadian Pacific steamships …

From England, one could travel by ship to Montreal … travel the short distance from Victoria Pier to Place Viger Station, staying over at the hotel if desired … take the CPR train to Vancouver and its harbour-side hotel … and if necessary … take another CPR ship to Asia.

With an increase in passenger business in the early 1900 … more ‘gates’ and tracks for passenger trains were added by building the structure in the foreground in 1910 … and the ground floor of the hotel was then used for hotel purposes. Trains would travel ‘away’ to the right from the far side of this building in the foreground.

One of my favorite Montréal moments: December 22, 2007 at Pintxo, a party of 6 happy eaters. We still talk about ordering every item on the menu except for the mixed salad.

Howard: “We do NOT need to order the mixed salad.”

All of us to our amused server: “Bring us everything but the mixed salad.”

Se alguem soubesse como sou apaixonada pelo Pintxo, dificilmente acreditaria no meu julgamento, mas esse sentimento foi conquistado pelo lugar que considero com uma das melhores comidas da cidade, e com certeza a melhor relação custo-benefício entre o preço e o que é servido.

Mas sim, vamos às comidas, pedimos o menu de almoço do dia, que vinha com 3 pintxos do dia e um prato principal a nossa escolha. Veio uma sopinha de couve-flor com umas lasquinhas de presunto serrano, completamente deliciosa e abriu o nosso apetite; foie gras torchon com cebola torradinhas caramelizadas, completamente fantástico, e figo recheado, que confesso, mesmo com todo o meu amor, não estava muito bom.

Minha companhia pediu bacalhau negro com molho frio de azeite, tomatinho cereja e pepino acompanhado de purê de batata. Estava tudo delicioso, com a casquinha salgada e torradinha do bacalhau contrastando com a leveza geral do prato.

Eu pedi carré de cordeiro com cogumelos salteados na manteiga acompanhado de uma saladinha verde. Tinha tudo para ser completamente perfeito, com os temperos no ponto, o cogumelo e a salada super gostosa e refrescante, mas não acertaram o ponto da carne, de modo que metade esava bom, mas a outra metade estava um pouco passada do ponto, uma pena porque é aquela coisa de poucos minutos que fazem a diferença no ponto de uma carne.

De sobremesa pedimos o cheese cake, o melhor do mundo disparado. No ponto ideal da doçura, completamente leve e cremoso, com uma geléia de frutas vermelhas por cima dando um toquezinho adocicado ideal.

Mas uma das melhores coisas do Pintxo que faz toda a diferença e fez o lugar entrar irremediavelmente pra sempre no meu coração é o atendimento carinhoso, cuidadoso e delicado. Não tem como não amar um lugar que te faz sentir tão especial.

No final, a conta com impostos e gorjeta deu 60 dólares canadenses, sendo que tinha comida para 2 pessoas .
