Fall 2010 seems to continue the whole American Sportswear re-invented and military trend. Cozy knits, fabulous outerwear pieces in heavy wools and fur, and big comfortable pants took over the runways. Everything seemed so practical and wearable that I couldn’t help but wish I had it all to wear now and keep forever.

My favorite trend is piling on the chunky knits. This trend reminds me of the perfect ski weekend in Aspen but perfectly acceptable and comfortable for every day life. My favorite show that portrayed this trend was Rag and Bone. These two designers from Nashville totally get the whole Americana style. The mixture of textures and monochromatic tones worked perfectly together; mixture of stylish, comfortable, and cool. The designer’s inspiration for this collection was “crazy English guys who climbed Mount Everest in the twenties in tweed” and they nailed this perfectly.

One of my other favorite shows came as a surprise to me. This designer went back to his roots and it worked out perfectly. Michael Kors put together a collection that was all American. This collection included an array of luxurious outerwear, cashmere floor length skirts and perfectly fitted sweaters. My favorite part of the collection was the outerwear. From the floor length furs and fur trimmed parkas to the wool coats with slits by the elbows, everything was classic Michael Kors.

One of my overall favorite collections came from Phillip Lim. I have always loved his design aesthetic but this collection was more Bohemian and feminine. It was basically Phillip Lim meets Chloe, one of my all around favorite lines when it comes to the feminine boho chic look. From the wide leg pants and bold wool check prints, to the ruffle front blouses and shearling leather jacket, this collection has lust worthy pieces that will last the test of time.

TRENCH COAT: First piece that will last you from Spring to Fall is a basic trench coat.  This is such an easy and versatile piece which is easy to find at a variety of price points.  Wear a trench over a floral dress, striped sweater, or oversized boyfriend shirt with jeans and you have a chic put together look.  If you already have a trench coat, or prefer a more unique option, you can opt for a sleeveless trench coat, which you can wear as a dress.  This style won’t be as easy to find as your basic trench coat but it can be a simple DIY by removing the sleeves.

NAUTICAL STRIPES: Stripes are a huge trend for Spring 2010. You can choose to wear stripes in a nautical way by pairing a striped top with a navy blazer and white pants.  If you prefer an edgier look you can pair an oversized striped sweater or t-shirt with leather pants or cut-off denim shorts.
Stripes are easy to find at a variety of price points, you just need to find the appropriate style to fit your shape.

FLORAL: This season florals are a great way to add a fun feminine print to any wardrobe.  There are so many different styles to work within this trend.  You can opt for a floral dress or a casual floral print cami.  My favorite way to wear this trend however is to go for floral denim.

SOFT NUDES: This season, put your black and grey to rest. The new black is nude!  Pairing different shades of nude is a great way to pull off this trend without feeling uncomfortable if your whites/nudes don’t match perfectly.  If you are daring you can choose a semi-sheer nude or lace to add an extra touch of sexiness and femininity.

GRAPHIC PRINTS: This season, the best accessory to a mini dress is a graphic print. This is the cool new way to add color and a bit of edge into your wardrobe.  The best style for a graphic print is a basic cut.  Remember, it’s all about the print and an edgy avant-garde cut may look too over the top.  Choose a graphic print in a basic shift or an A-line style.

As seen in some of the best runway shows from Spring 2010, a cool print is what is going to transform your Spring wardrobe from ordinary to fashion forward.  Whether you fill your closet with florals, stripes, or graphics prints make it your own by pairing them back to edgy leathers or classic boyfriend blazers.  But don’t forget to incorporate staple pieces that you will wear all season long such as nudes and the perfect trench coat.
