You can also choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. Measure the printed patterns to make sure the dimensions are according to the desired fitting and adjust if needed before cutting the fabric. For best results, sew a test garment in a similar fabric to adjust your pattern.

*Length without waistband, for standard (regular) sizes. You can adjust the length according to your preference. To maintain the look, reduce 2 inches for petite sizes and add between 3 and 5 inches for tall sizes. Measurements may vary after adjustments. 3 Tips for Sewing with Lightweight Cotton Denim

⇒ Use a denim needle.
⇒ Prewash your fabric to prevent shrinkage.
⇒ Make sure all pattern grain lines face the same direction to align the denim’s striated pattern.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1 

FRONT PANT SEAM

1. Place the front side and front center pieces next to each other as shown in the photo below.
2. Pin and sew the front side and front center pant pieces together along the center front.
3. Press the center front pant seams open and flat.

Step 2

FLAT FELLED SEAM

1. Trim one of the sides of the seam allowance (the side closest to the side seam of the pants) so that it is only ⅛ inch long.
2. Fold the untrimmed side of the seam allowance over itself, right sides together, then over the trimmed side of the seam allowance to encase all the raw edges.
3. Sew over the folded edge of the untrimmed seam allowance.
4. Repeat for both center front pant seams.

Step 3

FRONT PATCH POCKETS

1. Press a ½ inch fold into the sides and bottoms of the front pockets.
2. Press a 1 inch fold into the tops of the front pockets.
3. Topstitch around the sides and bottoms of the pockets with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
4. Sew two parallel topstitches along the tops of the pockets with a ¾ inch and ⅝ inch seam allowance, respectively.
5. Repeat for both front patch pockets.

Step 4

ATTACH FRONT PATCH POCKETS

1. Layout the front side paper pattern piece on top of the fronts of the pants to find where the front patch pockets should be pinned.
2. Pin the front patch pockets to the fronts of the jeans.
3. Sew around the sides and bottoms of the pockets with a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
4. Sew a bartack stitch on the top corners of the pockets perpendicular to the pocket side seams.
5. Repeat for both front pockets.

Step 5

POCKET FACINGS

1. Serge or sew a zigzag stitch along the rounded edges of the front pocket facings.
2. Place the pocket facings on top of the pocket B bag.
3. Pin and sew the pocket facings on top of pocket B as shown in the photo below with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 6

ROUNDED JEANS POCKET

1. Place the pocket A bags on top of the front pants pieces right sides together with the curves lined up.
2. Sew around the curved pocket opening.
3. Clip the seam allowance of the curved pocket opening.
4. Flip the pocket A bag to the wrong side of the front jeans pieces and press the curve so that the lining is completely hidden inside of the jeans.
5. Sew two parallel topstitches around the rounded jeans pocket with a ¼ inch and ⅜ inch seam allowance respectively.

Step 7

ATTACH POCKET BAGS

1. Place the pocket B backs on top of the pocket A bags from the INSIDE of the pants (the right sides of the pocket facings should be facing the same direction as the right sides of the fronts of the jeans).
2. Pin the A and B pocket bags to each other around the perimeter of the bags.
3. Sew the pocket bags together.
4. Pin the tops and sides of the pocket bags to the waistline and side seams of the front pants pieces as shown in the photo below.
5. Sew the tops and sides of the pocket bags to the waistline and side seams of the jeans with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 8

BACK DARTS

1. Mark the darts on the back waistline of the pants.
2. Fold the back waistlines of the jeans in half right sides together centered over the darts.
3. Sew over the dart lines.
4. Press the darts open and flat toward the side seams of the jeans.

Step 9

BACK PATCH POCKETS

1. Press folds into the back patch pockets in the same manner as the front patch pockets.
2. Topstitch over the back patch pockets in the same manner as the front patch pockets.
3. Pin the back patch pockets to the back jeans pieces following the pocket template on the paper pattern piece.
4. Sew the back patch pockets to the back pants pieces with a ⅛ inch seam allowance like the front patch pockets.

Step 10

SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the front jeans pieces on top of the back jeans pieces right sides together with the sides lined up.
2. Pin and sew the side seams.
3. Finish the side seams with a serger or zigzag stitch.
4. Press the side seam allowance toward the back of the pants.

Step 11

FINISH FLY PIECES

1. Fold the fly shield piece in half longways, wrong sides together.
2. Place the two fly facing pieces wrong sides together.
3. Serge or zigzag around the raw edges of the fly pieces.

Step 12

FLY FACING

1. Place the flat edge of the fly facing right sides together with the wearer’s left side of the front crotch line.
2. Sew the fly facing to the front left crotch line.
3. Fold the fly facing toward the crotch line and press.
4. Place the zipper right sides down on top of the fly facing with the edge of the zipper tape lined up with the seam that connects the fly facing to the pants.
5. Pin and sew the side of the zipper tape furthest away from the fly facing seamline.
6. Fold the fly facing into the wrong side of the wearer’s left side of the pants and press.

Step 13

FLY SHIELD

1. Place the pants pieces right sides together with the crotch seams lined up.
2. Unfold the zipper away from the fly facing.
3. Pin the unsewn side of the zipper tape right sides together with the wearer’s front right side of the crotch line.
4. Sew the zipper tape right sides together with the front right side of the pants.
5. Pin and sew the fly facing directly on top of the zipper seam on the front right side of the pants.

Step 14

FRONT CROTCH SEAM

1. Fold the pants in half wrong sides together with the front crotch lines lined up.
2. Pin and sew the rest of the front crotch seam directly under the zipper fly.

Step 15

TOPSTITCH FLY

1. From the inside of the jeans, fold the fly shield away from the zipper and pin it to the wearer’s front right side of the pants.
2. From the outside of the jeans, pin the fly facing down so that it is laying flat with the front left side of the jeans.
3. Topstitch around the fly facing, stopping when you get to the crotch seam.
4. Unpin and unfold the fly shield and put it back over the zipper.
5. From the outside of the jeans, sew a bartack at the bottom of the fly facing topstitching to secure the fly shield to the bottom of the zipper, preventing the zipper from unzipping further than the facings.

Step 16

BACK CROTCH SEAM

1. Place the two sides of the pants right sides together with the back crotch curves lined up.
2. Pin and sew the back crotch seam.

Step 17

INSEAM

1. Fold the pants in half right sides together with the inseams and crotch seams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the inseam.
3. Serge or zigzag the raw edges of the inseam.
4. Flip the pants right sides out and press the inseam toward the back of the pants.

Step 18

PANTS HEM

1. Press a 1 inch fold into the hem of the pants.
2. Sew two parallel topstitches into the hem of the pants with a ¾ inch seam allowance and ⅞ inch seam allowance, respectively.

Step 19

WAISTBAND

1. Fold the waistband in half longways right sides together.
2. Pin and sew the two short ends of the waistband together.
3. Flip the waistband right sides out.
4. Press a ½ inch fold into the raw edges of the waistband to tuck them inside of the layers of the waistband.

Step 20

BELT LOOPS

1. Fold the belt loop strip in half longways right sides together.
2. Sew the belt loop into a closed tube with a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
3. Flip the belt loop strip right sides out with a loop turner.
4. Press the belt loop strip, then cut it into 6 equal pieces.

Step 21

ATTACH WAISTBAND

1. Insert the waistline of the jeans into the open bottom edge of the waistband.
2. Pin the waistband to the waistline of the jeans.
3. Topstitch around the bottom of the waistband with a ⅛ inch seam allowance.

Step 22

ATTACH BELT LOOPS

1. Fold the top and bottom raw edges of the belt loops down into the inside of the belt loop tubes.
2. Pin the belt loops directly above the center front flat felled seam, flanking the center back crotch seam, and then centered between the front and back belt loops, so that all 6 are pinned in place.
3. Topstitch over the tops and bottoms of each belt loop.

Step 23

INSERT BUTTON & BUTTON HOLE

1. Sew a button hole on the overlapping side of the waistband directly above the fly facing.
2. Cut the button hole open with a seam ripper.
3. Poke a hold into the underlapping side of the waistband using an awl.
4. Insert a jeans button into the hole through the waistband.

3 Tips for Sewing with Ponte

⇒ Use a stretch stitch to attach all the pieces together. This will allow the ponte to retain its stretch.

⇒ Use a ballpoint or stretch needle to avoid pulls and skipped stitches.

⇒ Press all your seams open and flat as you go, but keep your iron on medium heat and high steam.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

SEW BODICE

1. NOTE: If you plan on adding a side seam zipper, only sew ONE SIDE of the bodice side seam. Leave the other one open.
2. Place the front bodice right sides together on top of the back bodice with the shoulders and sides lined up.
3. Pin and sew the front and back bodice pieces together at the shoulders and side seams.
4. Press the shoulder and side seams open and flat.

Step 2

SEW SLEEVES

1. Fold the sleeves in half right sides together with the sleeve inseams on top of each other.
2. Pin and sew the sleeve inseams.
3. Press the seam allowance open and flat.
4. Press a ½ inch fold into the hem of the sleeve.
5. Sew a ⅜ inch topstitch on the folded hem of the sleeve.

Step 3

SET IN SLEEVES

1. Flip the sleeves right sides out and the bodice wrong sides out.
2. Pin the sleeve caps into the armscyes, making sure that the front curves of the sleeve caps are matched up to the front curves of the armscyes.
3. Sew the sleeves into the bodice.
4. Flip the bodice right sides out.

Step 4

SEW COLLAR

1. Fold the collar right sides together with the short sides overlapping each other.
2. Pin and sew the short edges of the collar together to make it a closed loop.
3. Press the seam open and flat.
4. Fold the collar longways, wrong sides together.
5. Press the folded edge of the collar.

Step 5

ATTACH COLLAR

1. Pin the raw edges of the collar with the raw edges of the bodice neckline, right sides together. Make sure that the collar is pinned evenly around the neckline, meaning you may have to stretch the collar a little bit in order to make it fit the neckline.
2. Sew the collar to the neckline.
3. Flip the collar up to hide the seam allowance

Step 6 

SKIRT SIDE SEAMS

1. NOTE: If you plan on adding a side seam zipper, only sew ONE SIDE of the skirt side seam. Leave the other one open.
2. Place the front skirt right sides together on top of the back skirt.
3. Pin the two pieces together at the sides.
4. Sew the skirt side seams.
5. Press the side seams open and flat.
6. NOTE: If you want to add slits to the skirt, only pin part of the way down the skirt. The pins will end where you want the top of your slit to end. Then, after sewing and pressing the side seams open and flat, you can finish the raw edges of the slits.

Step 7

HEM PEPLUM

1. Press a ½ inch fold into the outer circumference of the peplum.
2. Topstitch the outer circumference of the peplum with a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
3. NOTE: If you plan on adding a side seam zipper, you’ll need to cut a straight line through the radius somewhere on the peplum piece. This slit will match up with the open sides of the top and skirt so that a zipper can be added.

Step 8

ATTACH SKIRT TO TOP

1. Layout the bodice right sides out.
2. Line up the inner circumference of the peplum with the hem of the blouse, placing them right sides together.
3. Flip the skirt wrong sides out.
4. Line up the skirt waistline with the peplum and blouse waistline, making sure that the right side of the skirt is touching the wrong side of the peplum.
5. Pin the skirt to the bodice with the peplum sandwiched between them, making sure the sides of the skirt line up with the sides of the blouse.
6. Sew the skirt to the blouse with the peplum between them.
7. Flip the whole dress right sides out.
8. NOTE: If you plan on adding a side seam zipper, now would be the time to do so. Make sure the open sides of the blouse, skirt, and peplum are all on the same side of the dress, then insert an invisible zipper from the armpit to the low hip.

Step 9

HEM SKIRT

1. Press a ½ inch fold into the hem of the skirt.
2. Topstitch over the folded hem with a ⅜ inch seam allowance.

How to Sew The Bormio Faux Fur Cape Coat

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Bormio Faux Fur Cape Coat from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Faux Fur

⇒ Once you’re done sewing the lining, PUT THE IRON AWAY. Under no circumstances should you be ironing faux fur. It could melt, burn, or otherwise change the look of the pile of the fur.
⇒ When cutting out the pattern pieces, don’t just hack away into the whole piece of fabric. Make sure to only snip the backing on the fur so that you don’t get faux fur whiskers all over your sewing room.
⇒ Make sure the pile of the fur is all facing the same direction on all your pattern pieces before cutting.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1 

LINING SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the front cape lining pieces right sides together on top of the back cape lining piece.
2. Pin the shoulders and sides of the front cape pieces to the back cape piece.
3. Sew the side and shoulders of the cape.
4. Flip the cape lining right sides out.
5. Press the cape side seams open and flat.

Step 2

FRONT LEFT SIDE

1. Layout the two front left coat pieces as shown in the photo below.
2. Pin the zipper right sides together with the straight edge of the front left side pieces.
3. Sew the side of the zipper tape closest to the raw edge of the left side coat piece.
4. Place the center left coat piece right sides together on the left side coat piece with the zipper sandwiched in between the two pieces.
5. Pin (or clip) and sew the center left coat piece to the left side coat piece, catching the zipper tape in the stitch.
6. Unfold the center left coat piece from the left front coat piece.

Step 3

FRONT RIGHT SIDE

1. Layout the front right side coat piece next to the front left side coat piece as shown in the photo below.
2. Place the center front raw edge of the right side coat piece right sides together on the other side of the zipper tape that hasn’t yet been sewn.
3. Pin the front right side coat piece to the zipper tape.
4. Sew the front right side to the other side of the zipper tape.
5. Unfold the front right side of the coat from the front left side.

Step 4

COAT SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the front coat pieces right sides together on top of the back coat piece.
2. Pin the sides and shoulders together.
3. Sew the front coat to the back coat at the side seams.

Step 5

WELT POCKETS

1. Press fusible interfacing into the wrong sides of the welt piece.
2. Fold the welt pieces in half longways wrong sides together and press the fold into place.
3. On the wrong side of the front coat pieces, mark the locations of the welt pockets using a fabric marking pen or marker. The size of the welt marking should be the same dimensions as the welt pattern piece when folded in half MINUS the seam allowances.
4. Cut a slit down the center of the welt marking with triangular notches at the ends of the slit, as shown in the photo below.
5. Pin the long raw edges of the welts right sides together to the long raw edges on either side of the center of the welt.
6. Sew the welts right sides together with the coat along the top and bottom welt markings.
7. Flip the welts to the wrong side of the coat and make sure they’re overlapping with the center welt (the one closest to the zipper) laying on top of the side welt (the one closer to the side of the coat) from the OUTSIDE of the coat. This is so that the welt pocket opens toward the side of the coat so that you can actually slip your hand into it.
8. Pin the short ends of the welts to the triangular notches at the sides of the welt opening.
9. Sew the ends of the welts to the triangular notches.
10. Check from the right side of the coat that the welt pocket is laying flat.
11. Repeat for the welt on the opposite side of the coat front.

Step 6 

POCKET BAGS

1. Pin and sew the pocket bags right sides together, leaving 1 inch unsewn on the top and bottom of the pocket opening so that the two pieces of the pocket bag can be separated from each other at the opening, as shown in the photo below.
2. Separate the two sides of the pocket bags from one another at the hand opening.
3. Pin each side of the pocket bag opening to either side of the welt pocket seam allowance, as shown in the photo below.
4. Sew the pocket bags to the welt seam allowances. DO NOT sew them directly to the front of the coat.

Step 7

ATTACH LINING

1. Insert the main coat into the lining coat so that they’re right sides together.
2. Pin the coat to the lining around the entire perimeter of both pieces. That is, pin the necklines, the center front opening, and the hem, making sure to leave a gap between the two pieces at the hem to flip the cape right sides out.
3. Sew around the perimeter of the coat openings except for the gap at the hem.

Step 8

FINISH ZIPPER ENDS

1. Before flipping the coat right sides out, trim both sides of the zipper tape at the neckline of the cape.
2. Trim a piece of the zipper tape from the end of the zipper that is long enough to wrap around the end of the exposed zipper.
3. Wrap the tape around the exposed end of the zipper and pin it in place.
4. Sew over the tape to secure it around the exposed zipper. This will prevent the metal teeth from ripping through the lining or itching you from the inside of the cape.

Step 9

CLOSE COAT HEM

1. Now you can flip the cape right sides out through the gap at the hem.
2. Use a hand sewing needle and thread to sew a ladder stitch along the gap in the hem to close the lining with the main fabric of the cape.

Step 10

MAKE COLLAR

1. Place the two collar pieces on top of each other right sides together.
2. Sew around the perimeters of the two collar pieces, leaving a small gap at the bottom of the collar to flip it right sides out.
3. Clip the corners of the collar to eliminate bulk.
4. Flip the collar right sides out through the gap, then poke out the corners with a point turner.
5. Sew the gap at the bottom of the collar closed with a ladder stitch.

Step 11

COLLAR SNAPS

1. Using a needle and thread, sew the stud sides of the snaps along the bottom edge of the collar.
2. I used 5 studs on the bottom of the collar: one at each corner, one in the center, and two more centered in between the middle and the ends.

Step 12

FRONT SNAP CLOSURE

1. Mark the area of the front of the cape where the inner corner of the lower layer of the cape is overlapped by the neckline of the outer layer of the cape using pins.
2. Hand sew the oversized snaps to the inside out the outer layer and the outside of the inner layer, as shown below, making sure that the hand stitching is not visible from the outside of the cape.

Step 13

NECKLINE SNAPS

1. Sew the snap receiver pieces to the lining at the inside of the cape neckline the same way you sewed the stud pieces to the collar.
2. Make sure the 5 snaps receivers are the same distance from each other as the 5 snap studs on the collar.

How to Sew The Modena Paneled Midi Skirt

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Modena Paneled Midi Skirt from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Faux Leather

⇒ For the faux leather fabric, DO NOT press the seams open with an iron. Instead, press them open with a seam roller or seam creaser tool. This fabric will MELT if you iron it. Don’t even try it (you can press the lining fabric seams open with an iron, though).

⇒ Use a longer stitch length when sewing the faux leather. This will prevent the fabric from getting stuck under the presser foot and warping if you put too many tiny holes in it.

⇒ Even though this isn’t real leather, it would benefit you to use a leather needle on your sewing machine.

⇒ You may want to use clips instead of pins for some parts of this project where the seam are really thick or where you don’t want visible pinholes in your fabric.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

DARTS

1. Mark the darts on the wrong sides of the front and back top skirt pieces with a fabric marking pen, marker, or chalk.
2. Pin the darts right sides together.
3. Sew over the darts with a long straight stitch (3.5-4 millimeters).
4. Fold the bulk of the darts toward the sides of the skirt but DO NOT press them with an iron. If anything, roll the darts open with the seam roller tool. If you don’t have one of those and don’t want to buy one, you can also just press the seam open firmly with your fingers.

Step 2

CENTER FRONT SEAM

1. Place the two top front skirt pieces right sides together with the center seams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the top front skirt center seam.
3. Press the center front seam open with the seam rolled.
4. Topstitch on either side of the center front seam with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 3

FRONT BOTTOM PANELS

1. Place the bottom front panels of the skirt right sides together.
2. Pin and sew the center front seam of the bottom front skirt panels.
3. Press the center seam of the bottom front skirt panels open with the seam roller.
4. Topstitch over either side of the bottom center front skirt panels.
5. Place the top front skirt panels right sides together on the bottom front skirt panels, making sure that the bottom of the upper skirt is touching the top of the lower skirt and the waistline of the skirt is touching the hem of the lower skirt.
6. Clip and sew the top front skirt to the bottom front skirt.
7. Press the middle skirt seam open and flat with the seam roller.

Step 4

BACK BOTTOM PANELS

1. Place the top back skirt pieces right sides together on top of the bottom back skirt pieces.
2. Clip the bottom edge of the top back skirt pieces with the upper edge of the bottom back skirt pieces.
3. Sew the middle seam of the back skirt pieces.
4. Press the middle seam open and flat with the seam roller.

Step 5

FRONT POCKETS

1. Fold all the edges of the pockets over by 1/2 inch (including the top edge, which is not pictured until the second photo).
2. Use clips or pins to hold the folded edges of the pockets in place.
3. Topstitch around the edges of the pockets with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
4. Use the front skirt pattern piece to mark out where the front pockets are meant to go on the front skirt pieces.
5. Pin the pockets to the front skirt pieces.
6. Topstitch around the sides and bottoms of the pockets with a ⅛ inch seam allowance to secure them to the front of the skirt.

Step 6 

SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the back skirt pieces right sides together on top of the front skirt piece with the side seams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the side seams of the skirt.
3. Press the skirt side seams open and flat with the seam roller.
4. Topstitch along both sides of each skirt side seam with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
5. Topstitch along both sides of the horizontal middle skirt seam with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 7

LINING SKIRT

1. Construct the skirt lining the same exact way the main skirt was constructed, but without pockets (as I’m writing this, I’m realizing that you don’t NECESSARILY need to sew the lower layers of the skirt lining. You just just construct the top skirt pieces and have the lining be a mini skirt. It’s up to you!).

Step 8

WAISTBAND

1. Place the waistband on top of the waistline of the main fabric skirt, right sides together.
2. Pin and sew the waistband to the waistline of the skirt, making sure that the darts are folded toward the side seam and all the other seams are open.
3. Unfold the waistband from the skirt and press the seam allowance open and flat with the seam roller.
4. Place the lining skirt right sides together with the other edge of the waistband.
5. Pin and sew the lining right sides together with the waistband opposite to the main fabric skirt.
6. Mark the middle of the skirt waistband (along the short edges, or center back seam) with a pin, as shown in the last photo below. This is where the waistband is going to fold in half and where the zipper will start in the next step.

Step 9

ZIPPER

1. Pin the zipper right sides together with only the main fabric skirt along one of the sides of the center back seam. Make sure the the metal stoppers at the top of the zipper are sitting slightly above where the pin is marking the fold at the top of the waistband.
2. Sew the zipper tape closest to the raw edge of the center back of the skirt.
3. Flip the skirt inside out.
4. Pin and sew the opposite side of the zipper tape right sides together with the opposite side of the skirt center back seam, making sure that the waist seams line up on both sides of the zipper.
5. Fold the skirt in half right sides together so that the center back seams are laying on top of each other.
6. Pin and sew the rest of the center back seam under the zipper and stop when you get to the notch for the slit.
7. Flip the skirt so that the lining and the main fabric are right sides together.
8. One side at a time, pin the zipper tape so that it is sandwiched between the main fabric skirt and the lining skirt at the center back seam.
9. Sew the zipper tape between the lining and the main skirt.
10. Flip the skirt right sides out.

Step 10

STITCH IN THE DITCH

1. Pin the outer skirt to the lining skirt around the waist seam.
2. Sew a stitch in the ditch to attach the lining to the main fabric at the waist seam and keep the waistband folded in place.

Step 11

HEM LINING

1. Sew a double rolled ½ inch hem into the lining skirt. The lining skirt MUST be hemmed shorter than the main fabric skirt.

Step 12

HEM CENTER BACK SLIT

1. Reach between the lining layer and the main fabric layer at the hem of the skirt to grab both layers of fabric along the center back slit.
2. Pinch the two layers of fabric at the slit right sides together.
3. Pull the two layers of fabric out the bottom of the skirt and pin/clip them together.
4. Sew one side of the slit from the notch to the lining hem.
5. Repeat the above process to sew the other side of the slit.

Step 13

TOPSTITCH ZIPPER & SLIT

1. Place pins all along the center back seam from the top of the waistband to the hem of the skirt to make sure the fabric is all laying flat and pressed away from the center back seam.
2. Topstitch along both sides of the center back seam with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 14

HEM MAIN SKIRT

1. Fold the hem of the main skirt ½ inch.
2. Topstitch over the hem of the skirt with a ⅜ inch seam allowance.

You can also choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. Measure the printed patterns to make sure the dimensions are according to the desired fitting and adjust if needed before cutting the fabric. For best results, sew a test garment in a similar fabric to adjust your pattern.

How to Sew The Saratoga Cropped Cape Jacket

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Saratoga Cropped Cape Jacket from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Cotton Herringbone Twill

⇒ Make sure you pre-shrink your fabric before cutting out the pattern! The fabric WILL shrink in the washing machine and dryer.

⇒ Choose a method of finishing the raw edges of your seam allowances before you start sewing. This jacket does not have a lining, and the twill will fray a bit, so either serge, zigzag, or even bias bind the raw edges of the inside of the cape.

⇒ Turn the heat and the steam up on your iron, the cotton twill can handle it, and it will ensure that your pressed seams are crisp.

Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

WELTS

1. Press fusible interfacing into the wrong sides of the welt pieces.
2. Press the welts in half longways wrong sides together.
3. Make chalk marks as a template for where to put the welt pockets on the front of the cape as indicated on the pattern. The dimensions of the chalk lines should be the same as the dimensions of the FOLDED welt MINUS the seam allowance, therefor it will be 1.25 inches tall and 7 inches wide, as shown in the photo with the ruler. Then, mark the center of the welt with another chalk line.
4. Pin the welts to the chalk marks so that the long raw edges are lined up with the center line of the template.
5. Sew the welts on top of the top and bottom chalk lines.
6. Cut a long opening between the two raw edges of the welts along the center chalk line, then cut two triangular notches at the end of that slit as shown in the photo below. This will allow you to flip the welts toward the inside of the cape.
7. Flip the notches to the inside of the cape, then press from both the outside and the inside. Make sure the triangular notches are also tucked toward the inside of the cape.

Step 2

POCKET BAGS

1. Pin the flat side seam edge of the pocket bag to the seam allowance of the welt pocket (DO NOT pin it to the cape itself, only the seam allowance of the welt).
2. Sew the pocket bag to the welt seam allowance with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
3. Pin and sew the other pocket bag to the other welt seam allowance opposite to the first one you just sewed.
4. Line up the two pocket bags with each other and pin around the perimeters of them. Keep in mind that since the pocket bags are both the same size as each other, you will have to fold some of the pocket bag fabric over itself in order to line up the pocket bag perimeters evenly with each other.
5. Pin the triangular notch cutout to the side seam allowance of the welts as shown in the photo below. Do so on both sides of the welts.
6. Sew the triangular notches to the welt side seam allowance. DO NOT sew the triangular notches to the cape itself, only to the welt seam allowance.
7. Sew around the pocket bags to close them.
8. Repeat for both welt pockets on the cape.

Step 3

FOLD BUTTON PLACKET

1. Press a ½ inch fold into both sides of the center front opening of the cape.
2. Press another fold onto the front opening aligned with the notch at the neckline to encase the first ½ fold.
3. Topstitch over the first fold to make the button placket, but be sure only to sew from the bottom hem to about ¾ of the way up the center front opening. We will finish the top of the button placket in a later step. Do not sew all the way to the neckline like I did in the photo below. I strayed a little bit from the instructions the first time I made this.

Step 4

BACK BOX PLEAT

1. Layout the lower cape layer right sides up with the neckline laying flat as shown below.
2. Fold the lower cape layer right sides together with the fold centered over the center back of the cape, lining up the pleat notches at the neckline.
3. Pin the notches together.
4. Sew the pleat with a 2 inch long seam.
5. Open the two right sides of the fabric away from each other, then fold the pleat in half so that the center back of the pleat is lined up with the seam of the pleat.
6. Press the box pleat flat.
7. Sew a basting stitch over the pleat with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 5

BACK SLIT

1. Place the two upper cape pieces right sides together with the center backs lined up.
2. Pin and sew from the neckline to the slit.
3. Press the center back seam open, then press a ½ inch fold into the slit under the seam you just sewed.
4. Topstitch over the slit with a ¼ inch seam allowance, making sure to sew directly over the top of the slit to prevent that seam from popping open.
5. Press a double rolled ¼ inch hem into the center front opening of the upper cape piece.
6. Sew over the double rolled hem at the center front opening.

Step 6 

ATTACH NECKLINES

1. Place the upper cape wrong sides down on the right side of the lower cape layer (keep in mind that in the first photo below, you’ll see that the button placket is sewn all the way to the neckline. DO NOT do this. This was a mistake that I had to seam rip later on).
2. Pin the upper cape neckline to the lower cape neckline.
3. Sew the upper cape the the lower cape around the neckline, making sure the shoulder seams are lined up.

Step 7

HEM LAYERS

1. Press a 1 inch fold into the hems of both the upper cape and the lower cape.
2. Sew the 1 inch fold with a ¾ inch seam allowance. This will create a nice wide hem.

Step 8

TACK POCKET BAGS

1. Lay the welt pocket bags flat so that they are folded toward the front button plackets.
2. Use a needle and thread to hand stitch tiny tacks into the corners of the pockets to secure them to the inside of the button placket. This will prevent the pocket bags from flapping around in the coat when the front of it is unbuttoned.

Step 9

FINISH BUTTON PLACKET

1. Remember how in step 2 I said how important it was NOT to finish the top of the button placket yet? Now we’re going to finish it. Unfold the button plackets and then re-fold each side so that they’re right sides together.
2. Pin the tops of the button plackets right sides together as shown in the photo below.
3. Sew the tops of the button plackets right sides together with a ½ inch seam allowance.
4. Flip the button plackets back so that they are right sides out again.
5. Finish the topstitching over the button plackets by continuing the stitch all the way to the top of the placket.

Step 10

COLLAR

1. Press fusible interfacing onto the wrong side of one of the collar pieces.
2. Place the collar pieces right sides together.
3. Pin the collar pieces together.
4. Sew around the top curved edge and the sides of the collar pieces, leaving the bottom edge open, as shown in the photo below.
5. Clip the corners of the collar.
6. Flip the collar right sides out, poke out the corners with a point turner, and press the seams.

Step 11

ATTACH COLLAR

1. Pin the raw edge of the collar to the raw edge of the cape neckline with the right side of the cape touching the interfaced piece of the collar.
2. Sew the collar to the cape.
3. Press the seam allowance of the collar down into the cape and pin it in place.
4. Understitch the collar seam allowance to the inside of the cape.

Step 12

BUTTON CLOSURES

1. Mark 6 evenly placed locations for the buttons and button holes on the two opposite sides of the button placket. My first button was ¾ inch from the top of the button placket, then every button under it was 3.5 inches apart from the last.
2. Make sure the upper cape layer is laid perfectly flat and in place on top of the lower cape layer, then mark the locations of the button holes on the upper cape and their respective button locations directly beneath them on the lower cape.
3. Sew the buttons onto the placket and the lower cape by hand.
4. Sew the buttonholes onto the button placket and upper cape with the buttonhole foot on your machine.

How to Sew The Vesper Winged Costume Dress

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Vesper Winged Costume Dress from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Crepe Knit

⇒ Use a ball point needle for sewing with stretch knit fabrics like this one.

⇒ Use a zigzag, lightening, or straight stretch stitch for every seam on this garment unless otherwise noted.

⇒ Don’t stretch the fabric too much while you’re sewing. You want to hold it taught, but you don’t want to pull it or force it under the presser foot.

Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed

• (A) TOP BACK
  • Fabric – Cut 1 on fold
• (B) TOP FRONT
  • Fabric – Cut 1 on fold
• (C) SLEEVES
  • Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

CONSTRUCT WINGS

1. Layout the triangular sections of the bat wings as shown in the photo below.
2. If using french seams, pin the side seams wrong sides together and sew with an ⅛ inch seam allowance. Then, press the seam open and flat before folding and pinning the wing right sides together over the seam. Finally, sew over the folded edge with a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
3. If using flat felled seams, pin and sew the side seams of the wings right sides together using a ½ inch seam allowance. Then, fold the raw edge of the seam allowance under itself and pin the folded edge in place. Finally, topstitch over the folded edge of the seam allowance to encase the raw edges.
4. Repeat this process until you have two separate wing pieces that are constructed of 4 sections each.

Step 2

HEM WINGS

1. Sew a ¼ inch single folded hem into all the crescent shaped sides of the fabric at the bottom of the wing. Stop at each corner and start sewing again to keep them neat.
2. Press the ¼ inch hemmed edges.
3. Fold those same edges over again by another ¼ inch and sew them again to create a double rolled ¼ inch hem. Make sure the raw edges of the corner of the wings are tucked in when you sew the second fold.
4. Use this same baby hemming technique on the side seams of the wings. These are the edges that are going to be sewn into the sleeve inseam and side seam later on.

Step 3

DRESS WAIST SEAMS

1. Lay the front top piece right sides together on the front skirt piece with the waistlines lined up.
2. Pin and sew the waistline of the front top to the waistline of the skirt.
3. Repeat the same process to create the back of the dress with the top back and back skirt.

Step 4

DRESS SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Lay the front dress right sides together on top of the back dress with the shoulders lined up.
2. Pin and sew the front of the dress to the back of the dress as the shoulders.
3. Press the shoulder seams open and flat.
