How to Sew The Fiona Athletic Set

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Fiona Athletic Set from start to finish.

 Tips for Sewing with Mesh Jersey and Fleece-Backed Cotton Knit

⇒ Sew both materials with a stretch needle or ball point needle to prevent skipped stitches and thread pulls in the fabric.
⇒ For the fleece-backed knit, make sure that your grainline is going perpendicular to the direction of stretch in the fabric.
⇒ Launder both fabrics before cutting out the pattern.

Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed

  • Fabric – Cut 1 on Fold

  • Fabric – Cut 1 on Fold

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

SHORTS POCKETS

1. Fold and press a ½ inch fold the sides and bottoms of the back pockets toward the wrong side of the fabric.
2. Fold and press a 1 inch fold into the tops of the back pockets toward the wrong side of the fabric.
3. Topstitch over the 1 inch folded top of the pocket with a ⅞ inch seam allowance.

Step 2

ATTACH SHORTS POCKETS

1. Place the wrong side of the back pockets on the right side of the back shorts pieces with the bottom edge of the pockets laying parallel with the bottom hem of the shorts. I put my pockets so that they were evenly spaced between the side and crotch seam and the hem and waistline seam.
2. Pin the sides and bottoms of the pockets to the backs of the shorts.
3. Topstitch around the sides and bottoms of the pockets to attach them to the backs of the shorts.

Step 3

BACK LACING LOOPS

1. Cut strips of beading cord that are around 2 inches long and wrap them into slipknots around your fingers as shown in the photo below. You’ll need 24 loops in total (12 for each leg).
2. Evenly space out the elastic loops along the right side of the side seam of the back of the shorts as shown in the photo below. Make sure to leave enough space on the top of the shorts for the waistband and the bottom of the shorts for the hem when placing the elastic loops.
3. Staystitch over the elastic loops with ¼ inch seam allowance to attach them to the side seams of the backs of the shorts.

Step 4

SIDE PANELS

1. Place the side panels right sides together with the side seams of the backs of the shorts.
2. Pin and sew the side panels to the side seams of the backs of the shorts.
3. Press the side seam allowances open and flat.

Step 5

FRONT LACING LOOPS

1. Evenly space the elastic loops along the side seams of the fronts of the shorts in the same manner that you spaced them out on the backs of the shorts.
2. Pin and sew the loops to the right side of the front side seams of the shorts.
3. Place the opposite sides of the side panels right sides together with the front side seams of the shorts.
4. Pin and sew the side panels to the front side seams of the shorts.
5. Press the front side seam open and flat.

Step 6 

CROTCH SEAM & INSEAM

1. Place the left shorts piece right sides together on top of the right shorts piece with the crotch seams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the front and back crotch seams together.

Step 7

SHORTS HEM

1. Fold the hem of the shorts up by ½ inch and press toward the wrong side of the fabric.
2. Sew two parallel straight stitches along the folded hem.

Step 8

WAISTBAND

1. Press a ½ inch fold into the waistline of the shorts toward the wrong side of the fabric.
2. Poke two holes with an awl on either side of the center front of the shorts at the waistline for the drawstrings.
3. Sew the folded waistband of the shorts with a ⅜ inch seam allowance to create a closed channel for the drawstring.

Step 9

DRAWSTRINGS & LACES

1. Cut two strips of fabric that are the length of your fabric front selvage to selvage and 1.5 inches wide.
2. Fold the strips in half longways and sew them right sides together.
3. Flip the tubes right sides out with a loop turner.
4. Cut one of the strips in half so that it can be used on either side of the shorts side seams.

Step 10

INSERT LACES

1. Insert one of the drawstrings into the waistband channel using a safety pin to feed it through the opening of the tunnel that you made with the awl in step 8.
2. Lace the drawstrings back and forth in a corseted pattern through the elastic loops at the side seams of the shorts.
3. Tie knots at the ends of all the drawstrings.

Step 11

GOLD NUMBERS

1. Following the instructions on the Heat & Bond Web Adhesive, peel off the backing to reveal the sticky side of the web adhesive.
2. Place the sticky side of the web adhesive to the wrong side of the imitation latex.
3. Place a piece of muslin over the web adhesive and then press it to the imitation latex with high heat and no steam. Let it sit and cool for a second before removing it from the ironing board.
4. Place the numbers (and letters, if you choose) on the right side of the imitation latex.
5. Hold the number stencils in place with pattern weights and carefully cut around them with a rotary cutter or X-acto knife.

Step 12

ADHERE NUMBERS

1. Place the paper side of the numbers on the front of the jersey and center them.
2. Peel the paper off the back of the numbers and place them back onto the front of the jersey.
3. Place muslin over the numbers then iron them to the jersey with the iron on high heat and no steam.
4. Let the numbers cool before removing them from the ironing board.

Step 13

LACE COLLAR

1. Cut strips of lace that are lined up parallel with the front and back necklines of the top pattern pieces. Make sure that there is ½ inch of seam allowance of lace trim at the shoulders and center of each top piece.
2. Sew the lace right sides together at the center front and back of the collar.
3. Unfold the front collar and line it up with the front neckline.
4. Pin and sew the lace collar right sides together with the front neckline.

Step 14

LOCKER LOOP

1. Fold the locker longways right sides together.
2. Sew the loop with a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
3. Flip the loop right sides out with a loop turner.
4. Pin the locker loop to the center back neckline as shown in the photo below.
5. Pin the back collar right sides together on top of the locker loop.
6. Sew the back collar to the back neckline, securing the locker loop in place.

Step 15

SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Place the front jersey right sides together with the back jersey with the shoulders lined up.
2. Pin and sew the front and back jersey pieces together at the shoulder seams, making sure to sew the lace collar as well as the jersey fabric.
3. Press the shoulder seams open and flat.

Step 16

SLEEVES

1. Separate the front and back top pieces and unfold at the shoulder seams.
2. Line up the sleeve caps right sides together with the armscyes of the jersey, making sure the fronts of the sleeves line up with the front of the jersey.
3. Pin and sew the sleeve caps right sides together with the armscyes.
4. Fold the jersey at the shoulder seams with the side seams and sleeve inseams lined up.
5. Pin and sew the jersey side seams and sleeve inseams.

Step 17

HEMS

1. Press a 1 inch fold into the hem of the shirt and the hems of the sleeves.
2. Press the stitch witchery hem tape into the 1 inch fold for a seamless hem on both the sleeves and the hem of the jersey.

How to Sew The Amalfi Zip-Front Midi Resort Dress

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Amalfi Zip-Front Midi Resort Dress from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Stretch Cotton Sateen

⇒ This particular print that we chose is a repeating pattern that spans perpendicularly to the stretch direction of the sateen. Make sure that the stretch direction of the sateen aligns horizontally across your body, and if you’re using this print, that the citrus print spans vertically across the front of the dress.

⇒ Pre-shrink your fabric before cutting it out. It WILL shrink.

⇒ Serge or zigzag stitch all the raw edges on your dress, especially around the armscyes.

Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed

• (A) BACK
  • Fabric – Cut 1 On Fold
• (B) FRONT
  • Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored
• (C) COLLAR
  • Fabric – Cut 2 On Fold

Remember to consider the pattern placement whether you sew with the same fabric as we did or with another patterned fabric.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

CENTER FRONT ZIPPER

1. Layout the front dress pieces right sides up with the center fronts lined up.
2. Place the zipper right sides together with one of the front sides.
3. Pin and sew the zipper tape closest to the raw edge of the center front of the dress.
4. Open the seam  between the zipper and the dress and press it flat.
5. Lay the front piece with the zipper and the front piece without the zipper right sides together.
6. Pin and sew the other side of the zipper tape to the other side of the center front of the dress.
7. Press a ½ inch seam allowance into the raw edges of the center front of the dress under the zipper.

Step 2

TOPSTITCH ZIPPER & SLIT

1. Topstitch over both sides of the zipper from the neckline to the hem with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 3

COLLAR

1. Place the two collar pieces right sides together.
2. Pin and sew the two short sides and one long side as shown in the photo below.
3. Clip the corners of the collar.
4. Flip the collar right sides out.
5. Press the collar seams.

Step 4

SIDE & SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Place the front of the dress right sides together on top of the back of the dress with the sides lined up.
2. Pin and sew the side and shoulder seams.
3. Press the side and shoulder seams open and flat.

Step 5

SLEEVES

1. Finish the raw edges of the armscyes with a short and wide zigzag stitch or a serger.
2. Press the serged edges of the armscyes toward the inside of the dress with ½ inch seam allowance.
3. Topstitch over the folded armscye with ⅜ inch seam allowance.
4. Repeat for both armscyes.

Step 6 

ATTACH COLLAR

1. Pin one of the raw edges of the collar right sides together to the neckline of the dress.
2. Sew the collar to the neckline.
3. Gently press the seam allowance between the collar and the neckline towards the collar and away from the neckline.
4. Press a ½ inch fold into the raw edge of the collar that is not sewn to the neckline.
5. Pin the folded edge of the inner collar to the neckline seam.
6. Sew a stitch in the ditch between the collar and the neckline from the right side of the dress.

Step 7

HEM

1. Sew a 1 inch hem into the bottom of the dress, making sure both sides of the slit line up in the center.

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Reef Sleeveless Cover Up from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with French Terry

⇒ French terry is stretchier in one direction than the other, so make sure all your pattern pieces are cut on the same grain line with the stretchier direction of the french terry spanning horizontally over your body, not vertically.

⇒ Make sure you press all your seams open really thoroughly because the french terry is really thick and bulky, so pressing your seams will prevent bulk when wearing it.

⇒ Use a microtex needle when sewing through the parts of the pattern where there are 4-6 layers of fabric.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

CONSTRUCT FRONT

1. Layout the front dress pieces right sides up with the front upper piece on top, the front lower piece in the middle,  and the front skirt piece on the bottom.
2. Pin and sew the front dress pieces right sides together.
3. Press the front seams.

Step 2

CONSTRUCT BACK

1. Construct the back in the same manner as the front.
2. Press the back seams open and flat.

Step 3

HEM BAND

1. Lay the front hem band right right sides together on top of the back hem band.
2. Pin and sew the short sides of the hem bands to each other to create one big circle.
3. Press the hem band side seams open and flat.

Step 4

SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the front of the dress right sides together on top of the back with the sides lined up.
2. Pin and sew the front of the cover up to the back of the cover up at the side seams.
3. Press the side seams open and flat.

Step 5

SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Line up the front and back shoulders right sides together.
2. Pin and sew the shoulder seams.
3. Press the shoulder seams open and flat.

Step 6 

SLEEVES

1. Press a ½ inch hem into the armscyes.
2. Pin the armscye hem into place.
3. Topstitch over the folded armscye with a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
4. Repeat for both armscyes.

Step 7

ATTACH HEM BAND

1. Place the hem band right sides together around the hem of the cover up.
2. Pin around the bottom hem of the dress.
3. Sew the hem band to the skirt.
4. Flip the hem band down and press the seam open.

Step 8

COLLAR

1. Place the two collar pieces right sides together and pin the upper curved edge as shown in the photo below.
2. Sew the tops of the collars together.
3. Press the collar seam open and flat, then fold the collar wrong sides together and press the seam folded.
4. If you haven’t already, cut the slit in the center front neckline of the coverup that is as long as the teeth on your zipper.

Step 9

ATTACH COLLAR

1. Pin one of the raw edges of the collar right sides together to the neckline of the cover up.
2. Sew the collar to the neckline.
3. Gently press the seam allowance between the collar and the neckline towards the collar and away from the neckline.

Step 10

CENTER FRONT ZIPPER

1. Pin the zipper right sides together with one of the sides of the center front slit as shown in the photo below. Make sure the top of the zipper is lined up with the seam at the top of the collar, NOT the raw edge of the inner collar piece.
2. Sew the zipper tape to the center front neckline.
3. Flip the zipper so that the other side of the zipper tape is right sides together with the other side of the neckline slit.
4. Pin and sew the other side of the zipper tape right sides together with the other side of the neckline slit.

Step 11

FINISH COLLAR

1. Fold the inner collar piece so that it is right sides together with the outer layer of the collar.
2. Pin the short edges of the collar pieces to each other with the zipper tape sandwiched between them, as shown in the photo below.
3. Fold the long raw edge of the inner collar wrong sides together with a ½ inch fold (we’re doing this now so that all the raw edges are hidden for the next step).
4. Sew the the short edges of the collar pieces right slides together, making sure you caught the zipper tape.
5. Clip the corners of the collar and then flip it right sides out and wrong sides together.
6. Pin the  folded edge of the inner collar to the seam between the outer collar and the neckline.
7. Sew a stitch in the ditch between the collar and the neckline from the right side of the cover up.
8. Topstitch around the zipper.

Step 12

LACE TRIM

1. Press a 1 inch hem into the bottom of the skirt.
2. Press stitch witchery fusible hem tape into the hem of the skirt (or hem it with a ⅞ inch seam allowance.
3. Pin the lace trim around the hemmed edge of the skirt.
4. Sew the lace trim to the skirt with a ⅛ inch seam allowance.

Step 13

TOPSTITCHING

1. Topstitch above and below the seam between the front top and front bottom pieces.
2. Topstitch above and below the seam between the back top and back bottom pieces.
3. Topstitch the top of the collar.

Step 14

MARK POCKETS

1. Using the markings on the paper pattern, mark the locations of the zipper pockets on the front skirt. Make sure you only make the markings as long as the zipper teeth of the zipper you’re using for this pocket.
2. Cut out a slit along the pockets as shown in the photo below.

Step 15

POCKET ZIPPERS

1. Pin and sew the zipper right sides together with the inner edge of the pocket slit.
2. Do this for both zipper pockets.

Step 16

INNER POCKET BAG

1. Place the inner pocket bag right sides together on top of the zipper you just sewed.
2. Pin and sew the inner pocket bag directly on top of the zipper you just sewed.
3. Flip the pocket bag to the inside of the cover up dress.
4. Pin the other side of the pocket bag to the other pocket directly on top of the zipper. This step is a little tricky because you have to manipulate the fabric to pin it from the inside of the cover up dress.
5. Sew the inner pocket bag to the opposite zipper.
6. Sew the opposite side of zipper tape on each of the zippers right sides together to the opposite side of the pocket slit on both sides of the skirt.

Step 17

OUTER POCKET BAG

1. Place the outer pocket bag right sides together on the inner pocket bag.
2. Pin the pocket bags together around every edge except for around the zippers. When you get to the zippers, make sure you only pin the outer pocket bag to the outer edge of the zipper tape.
3. Pin the tops of both pocket bags to the seam allowance between the cover up top and cover up skirt.
4. Sew each of the pinned sections one by one, making sure no seams are showing from the outside of the coverup.

Step 18

TOPSTITCH POCKETS

1. Fold the triangular pieces of the pocket slits toward the inside of the skirt to hide their raw edges.
2. Topstitch around the zipper, making sure not to sew the pocket shut in the process.
3. Repeat for both pockets.

3 Tips for Sewing with Rayon Challis

⇒ I highly recommend cutting out this fabric with a rotary cutter on a self healing mat. This fabric shifts around a lot on the bias, and it’s a lot easier to cut out curved pattern pieces with the rotary cutter than with straight scissors.

⇒ Launder your fabric before cutting out the pattern pieces so that it is pre-shrunk.

⇒ If you want a really professional finish on the hem, put the finished cover up dress on a mannequin and button it the way you would if you were wearing it. Let the dress hang for 24 hours, then trim the raw hem of the dress so that it is even all the way around before hemming. This is because rayon challis tends to warp when it hangs.

Step 1

POCKETS

1. Fold the sides and bottom of the breast pockets toward the wrong side of the fabric.
2. Press a ½ inch fold into the sides and bottoms of the pockets.
3. Fold the top of the pocket by ¼ inch then again by ¾ inch.
4. Press the fold into the top of the pocket.
5. Topstitch over the bottom edge of the top of the pocket.

Step 2

ATTACH POCKETS

1. Cut out the pocket from the front paper pattern piece.
2. Place the paper pattern piece over the front of the dress.
3. Place the pocket in the cutout.
4. Remove the paper and pin the pocket in place.
5. Sew around the sides and bottom of the breast pocket.
6. Repeat for the other pocket on the opposite side of the front of the dress.

Step 3

BUTTON PLACKET

1. Fold the center front of the dress along the notches at the neckline. There should be one ½ inch fold of seam allowance and one 1 inch fold for the button placket.
2. Press the folds into place.
3. Pin the button plackets.
4. Topstitch over the seam allowance of the button plackets.

Step 4

SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the fronts of the dress right sides together with the back of the dress, making sure the sides are lined up with each other.
2. Pin the fronts and back of the dress right sides together at the sides.
3. Sew the side seams of the dress.

Step 5

SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Pin the fronts and back of the dress right sides together at the shoulders.
2. Sew the shoulder seams of the dress.

Step 6 

SLEEVES

1. Fold the sleeves right sides together with the inseams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the sleeve inseams.
3. Fold the raw edges of the sleeve hems toward the wrong side of the sleeve with  a 1 inch fold.
4. Press the sleeve hem.
5. Press stitch witchery hem tape into the fold for a completely seamless finish. Alternatively, you can just hem it with a straight stitch.

Step 7

INSERT SLEEVES

1. Flip the dress inside out.
2. Pin the sleeves right sides together with the armscyes of the dress, making sure the sleeve fronts are aligned with the front of the dress.
3. Sew the sleeve caps to the armscyes.
4. Flip the dress right sides out.

Step 8

COLLAR

1. Place the collar bands right sides together with the shorter curved edge of the collar pieces.
2. Pin and sew the collar band to the collar as shown in the second photo below.
3. Press the seam between the collar band and the collar toward the collar.
4. Place the two collar pieces right sides together.
5. Pin around the sides and top edge of the collar pieces.
6. Sew around the sides and top edge of the collar.
7. Clip the corners of the collar and band.
8. Flip the collar right sides out and press.

Step 9

ATTACH COLLAR

1. Pin one of the raw edges of the collar to the neckline of the dress.
2. Sew the collar to the neckline.
3. Press a ½ inch fold into the other raw edge of the collar.
4. Pin the folded edge of the collar to the seamline between the collar and the neckline of the dress.
5. Topstitch a stitch in the ditch between the collar and the neckline of the dress to attach the inner collar to the dress seamlessly.

Step 10

BUTTONS

1. Evenly mark the button hole locations on both sides of the center front of the dress.
2. Hand sew the buttons to the button placket on the wearer’s right side of the dress.

Step 11

BUTTON HOLES

1. Use the buttonhole foot attachment on your sewing machine to sew buttonholes on the opposite side of the button placket.
2. Use a seam ripper to open the button holes gently.

Step 12

HEM

1. Press a 1 inch fold into the bottom of the dress.
2. Press stitch witchery hem tape into the fold for a seamless hem, or hem the dress with a straight stitch if desired.

How to Sew The Azure Tankini Skirt Set

3 Tips for Sewing with Tricot

⇒ Make sure to switch out the needle on your sewing machine for a ballpoint needle, which is made for stretch fabrics.

⇒ Use a rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat to cut out the pattern pieces. It will prevent the fabric from moving around as much as you’re cutting and will ensure your pattern pieces are symmetrical.

⇒ Use a zigzag stitch to connect ALL your pieces together. This will allow the fabric to stretch with you without popping seams open. Alternatively, you can use the straight stretch stitch on your machine, which is the stitch that looks like 3 straight stitches all lined up next to each other.

5. Pin and sew the waistlines of the two waistband pieces together.
6. Flip the waistband right sides out.

Step 3

ATTACH WAISTBAND

1. Pin the waistband to the right side of the skirt waistline.
2. Sew along the pins to attach the waistband to the skirt waistline.
3. Flip the waistband up and out.
4. Flip the skirt right sides out.

Step 4

ATTACH RUFFLE

1. Evenly pin the skirt ruffle right sides together with the hem of the skirt.
2. Sew along the pins.
3. Flip the skirt ruffle down and the skirt right sides out. Leave the hem of the skirt ruffle raw.

Step 5

SIDE & CROTCH SEAMS

1. Before starting the bottoms: Keep in mind that the lining is optional. If you’d like the bikini to be unlined, you can opt to add a gusset and finish the raw edges of the bikini the same way they are finished in the Antikythera One-Shoulder Bikini sewing pattern. Otherwise, this is how to make the bottoms fully lined.
2. Place the front bikini bottom piece right sides together with the back bikini bottom piece (for both the main fabric and the lining).
3. Pin the crotch seams of both the bikini bottom lining and the bikini bottom main fabric.
4. Pin one of the side seams on the main fabric bikini bottom, and whichever side you choose, pin the opposite side seam of the lining.
5. Sew along the pins.

Step 6 

LEG HOLES

1. Place the lining bikini bottoms right sides together with the main fabric bikini bottoms.
2. Pin the lining to the main fabric around the leg hole.
3. Sew around the leg hole.
4. Flip the bikini bottoms right sides out.
5. Use the burrito method to close the other leg hole.
6. Press the leg hole openings so that the lining doesn’t show from the outside of the bikini.

Step 7

CLOSE SIDE SEAM

1. Open up the unsewn side seam of the bikini bottoms and place the main fabric right sides together with itself, the lining right sides together with itself, and the seam at the hip of the leg opening lined up between both layers.
2. Pin and sew the open side seam.
3. Flip the bikini bottoms right sides out.

Step 8

CLOSE WAIST

1. Sew the main fabric to the lining at the waistline, right sides together, except for a small gap through which you will need to flip the bikini bottoms right sides out.
2. Flip the bikini bottoms right sides out through the hole in the waistline.
3. Press the waistline.
4. Sew a wide and long zigzag stitch along both leg openings and the waistline to ensure the lining does not show from the outside of the bathing suit.

Step 9

TOP SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the back top pieces right sides together with the front top pieces (for both the main fabric and the lining).
2. Pin and sew the top side seams with a straight stretch stitch.

Step 10

STRAPS

1. Fold the straps longways right sides together.
2. Sew the straps right sides together with a zigzag stitch.
3. Trim the seam allowance to ¼ inch.
4. Flip the straps right sides out with a loop turner.
5. Press the straps flat.

Step 11

STRAP RUFFLES

1. Evenly pin the ruffles along the straps, stretching the strap to fit the length of the ruffle and leaving ½ inch of strap at the end before pinning the ruffle.
2. Topstitch the ruffle to the strap with a zigzag stitch.
3. Repeat for both straps.

Step 12

ATTACH STRAPS

1. Place the main fabric top right sides together with the lining top.
2. Insert the straps in between the lining and the main fabric at the front of the top.
3. Pin the straps between the lining and the main fabric at the two points in the front of the top, making sure the straps are right sides together with the main fabric and the ruffles are facing out from the top.
4. Feed the other end of the straps in between the main fabric and the lining at the back of the top.
5. Pin the other side of the strap so that it is right sides together with the main fabric at the back of the top. Make sure your straps are not twisted.
6. Pin and sew around the entire neckline of the top, making sure to catch the straps.
7. Flip the top right sides out.

Step 13

INSERT BACK ELASTIC

1. Cut a piece of swimsuit elastic that is 1 inch shorter than the length of the back top piece.
2. Pin the elastic in between the main fabric and the lining at the back neckline of the top, making sure the elastic is pinned from side seam to side seam.
3. Topstitch around the entire neckline with a wide and long zigzag stitch, making sure to catch the elastic in the back.
4. Flip the top right sides out.

Step 14

TOP WAISTBAND

1. Fold the waistband right sides together with the two short raw edges touching each other.
2. Pin and sew the short ends of the waistband right sides together.
3. Fold the waistband wrong sides together so that if it half its original length and the seam allowance is hidden in the waistband.

Step 15

ATTACH TOP WAISTBAND

1. Pin the raw edges of the waistband evenly around the bottom of the bikini top.
2. Sew along the pins.
3. Flip the waistband down and the bikini top right sides out.

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Kythira Wide-Leg Beach Pants from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Rayon Challis

⇒ I highly recommend cutting out this fabric with a rotary cutter on a self healing mat. This fabric shifts around a lot on the bias, and it’s a lot easier to cut out curved pattern pieces with the rotary cutter than with straight scissors.

⇒ Launder your fabric before cutting out the pattern pieces so that it is pre-shrunk.

⇒ If you want a really professional finish on the hem, put the finished pants on a mannequin and tie it the way you would if you were wearing it. Let the pants hang for 24 hours, then trim the raw hem of the pants so that it is even all the way around before hemming. This is because rayon challis tends to warp when it hangs.

Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed

• (A) PANTS FRONT/BACK
  • Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored
• (B) WAISTBAND
  • Fabric – Cut 2 on Fold

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

CROTCH SEAM

1. Place the two sides of the pants pieces right sides together with the curved crotch seams lined up.
2. Pin the crotch curves together.
3. Sew the crotch seam.
4. Surge or zigzag the raw edges of the crotch seam allowance.

Step 2

SIDE SEAMS

1. Sew a double folded ¼ inch hem on all 4 side seams (front left, front right, back left, back right).
2. Press the side seam hems flat.

Step 3

WAISTBANDS

1. Fold the long edges of the waistband pieces toward the center line of the waistband, wrong sides together.
2. Press the folded edges into place.
3. Fold the waistband right sides together on top of itself.
4. Tuck the short raw edges of the waistband into the wrong side of the waistband.
5. Sandwich the front waistline in between the layers of the waistband and pin.
6. Sandwich the back waistline in between the layers of the other waistband piece and pin.
7. Sew the waistbands to the waistlines of the pants.

Step 4

HEM

1. Sew a double folded ¼ inch hem into the bottom of the pants.
2. Press the pants hem.

3 Tips for Sewing with Tricot

⇒ Make sure to switch out the needle on your sewing machine for a ballpoint needle, which is made for stretch fabrics.

⇒ Use a rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat to cut out the pattern pieces. It will prevent the fabric from moving around as much as you’re cutting and will ensure your pattern pieces are symmetrical.

⇒ Use a zigzag stitch to connect ALL your pieces together. This will allow the fabric to stretch with you without popping seams open.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

SIDE & SHOULDER SEAMS

1. NOTE: Before cutting out your pattern pieces, decide on which side you’d like the shoulder strap to go.
2. Place the front top and the back top pieces right sides together with the sides and shoulders lined up.
3. Pin and sew the side and shoulder seams of the bikini top.

Step 2

TOP WAISTBAND

1. Fold the top waistband right sides together with the two short ends of the waistband meeting.
2. Pin and sew the raw edges of the short side of the waistband.
3. Fold the waistband wrong sides together longways with the seam allowance hidden inside of the waistband.
4. Pin the raw edges of the folded waistband to the raw edge of the bottom of the bikini top.
5. Sew along the pins.

Step 3

FINISH ARMSCYE

1. Fold the raw edges of the armscye in toward the wrong side of the bikini top.
2. Sew around the armscye with a zigzag stitch to secure the raw edges of the armscye in place.
3. Press the armscye hem.

Step 4

RUFFLE

1. Pin the RIGHT side of the ruffle to the WRONG side of the neckline of the bikini stop.
2. Sew along the pins.
3. Sew the seam allowance of the ruffle to the inside of the neckline by understitching with a zigzag stitch.

Step 5

GUSSET

1. Place the RIGHT SIDE of the gusset against the WRONG SIDE of the back of the bikini bottoms.
2. Place the RIGHT SIDE of the back of the bikini bottoms against the RIGHT SIDE of the front of the bikini bottoms (before sewing, the layers should be like this: front and back bikini bottoms right sides together and pinned at the crotch, right side of gusset piece against wrong side of back bikini bottoms).
3. Pin the layers together and sew.
4. Press the gusset seam flat.

Step 6 

GATHER BOTTOMS

1. Sew two parallel gathering stitches with a stitch length of 4 millimeters along all 4 open side seams of the bikini bottoms. Make sure to only sew the gather stitches along the top half of the side seams.
2. Gather the stitches as much as you can.
3. Pin the front and back bikini bottom pieces together at the side seams, making sure to secure the gathers with a short and narrow zigzag stitch.

Step 7

ELASTIC

1. Cut a piece of elastic for the waistband of the bikini bottoms that is 1 inch shorter than the circumference of the unstretched waistline of the bikini bottoms.
2. Cut 2 pieces of elastic for the bikini bottom leg openings that are 1 inch shorter than the circumference of the unstretched leg openings.
3. Pin the elastic evenly around the bikini bottom waistline and leg openings with the raw edges of the openings folded over onto the elastic.
4. Sew over the elastic and the folded edge of the bikini bottom openings with a zigzag stitch.

You can also choose the size according to your desired finished garment measurements, blending between sizes as needed. How to Sew The Rosolite Négligée Gown

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Rosolite Négligée Gown from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Chiffon-Like Silk Voile

⇒ Use super skinny, super sharp microtex needles for your sewing machine to prevent thread pulls in the fine fabric.

⇒ For a super clean, super professional finish, sew French seams on every single seam that you can. This means you have to sew the fabric wrong sides together with a ¼ inch seam allowance, press the seam flat, flip the fabric right sides together, then sew the seam again with another ¼ inch seam allowance.

⇒ Make sure when cutting out your pattern pieces that the fabric is not at all distorted on whatever surface you’re using to cut. This fabric shifts around a lot on the bias, so you want to make sure your grainlines are perfectly perpendicular to each other before cutting out the fabric.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

FRONT BODICE

1. Layout the front bodice pieces as shown in the photo below.
2. Pin and sew the bra cups right sides together.
3. Press the bra cup seams open and flat.
4. Pin and sew the bra cups one at a time to the center front diamond piece, right sides together.
5. Repeat this step twice to get two layers of bodice.

Step 2

STRAPS

1. Fold the straps longways, right sides together.
2. Sew the folded straps with a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
3. Flip the straps right sides out with a loop turner.
4. Place the front bodice pieces right sides together.
5. Sandwich two of the straps in between the front bodice layers.
6. Pin the top neckline and straps of the front bodice.
7. Sew along the pins, securing the straps in place.
8. Clip the seam allowance on the top corner of the bra cups.
9. Flip the front bodice piece right sides out and press the seams.

Step 3

FRONT SKIRT

1. Layout the front side and front center skirt pieces as shown in the photo below.
2. Use french seams to attach the front side pieces to the front center pieces, only down to the notch where the godets will be inserted later.
3. Use french seams again to attach the two front center pieces together.
4. Press all the french seams towards the side seams.

Step 4

ATTACH FRONT SKIRT

1. Use french seams to sew the top of the front skirt to the bottom of the front bodice.

Step 5

BACK BODICE

1. Insert the other two straps (back straps) into the bottom hole of the metal bra strap sliders.
2. Place the two back bodice pieces right sides together.
3. Sandwich the back straps between the back bodice pieces.
4. Pin the necklines of the two back bodice together, making sure to also pin the straps in place.
5. Sew along the pins.
6. Clip the corners of the back bodice.
7. Flip the back bodice pieces right sides out and press the seams.

Step 6 

BACK SKIRT

1. Hem the top edge of the center back skirt pieces with a double rolled hem.
2. Use french seams to attach the center back pieces to the side back pieces as shown in the photo below

Step 7

ATTACH BACK SKIRT

1. Use french seams to sew the top of the back skirt to the bottom of the back bodice.

Step 8

SIDE SEAMS

1. Use french seams to sew the side seams of the dress together.
