• Mood DIY: Sewing an Easy Beach Cover Up without a Pattern

Having trouble matching a cover up to that perfect swim suit you just bought? How about making one? This simple gathered tunic can be made in less than an hour (really!), and all it takes is a couple yards of whatever fabric you're currently in love with. Try your own with a linen, voile, jersey, or even a chiffon! Fabrics & materials used: First, you'll need to cut your linen to the size you want your cover-up to be. Two yards, folded in half, is typically enough to cover to a person's mid/upper thigh. The width is where you can mix things up. The wider you make it, the longer your sleeves will be and the more fabric you'll have gathered at the waist. My finished tunic was about 45" wide. Before anything else, I recommend starting by hemming around your entire fabric to keep your edges from fraying. Next, you'll need to add four grommets to the garment, two in the front and two in back. This is easiest with the Dritz Plier Kit, but it can also be done with a hammer. Mark each of your desired grommet locations. I went with 20" up and 10" in. Cut a small hole and fit the front piece of a grommet through. Be sure you insert it from the right side, toward the wrong side. Cover the grommet with it's backing and secure it with the pliers (or a hammer and applicator kit). Lastly, I created the neckline. This is another area where you can play around with the design. Try a chic and simple boat neck or deep V - possibilities are endless! For the neckline I made, I cut the lower section from the main fabric and used it like a pattern. I then traced and cut two of the same shape, adding seam allowance. I stitched them together around the inner perimeter, turned it right-side out, pressed, and attached it to the main panel of fabric. The final touch was a length of ivory and metallic cording for a belt! The project took about 45 minutes and gives off some sea-rious breach-ready vibes. Are you going to be giving something like this a try?

  • Fun in the Sun Fabrics

The summer is the perfect time to show off your skills and create beautiful designs, like cut out dresses and bubble skirts. But, the last thing you want to do this summer is pass out from the heat. The key to avoiding this? Using the right fabrics, of course! Whether you're touring the festival circuit, relaxing at a family cook out, or spending  a day at the beach with bae, these fashionable fabrics will keep you cool, calm, and complimented.

    1.) Cotton

Cotton, in general, is an excellent summer fabric. As a cellulose fiber based material (meaning it comes from a plant) it is hydrophilic, that is, it's absorbent. So, when you're running around in the heat, cotton is what will absorb perspiration quickly and keep you comfortable. Cotton also has a high rate of thermal conductivity, so it transfers your body heat away from you. There are many varieties, and most are generally breathable. Eyelet cotton has small holes in it, making it an excellent choice for flowy shirts and crop tops. Check out this beautiful White Floral Embroidered Cotton Eyelet! Perfect for this Cinco de Mayo Inspired Crop Top

Sateen, the cotton equivalent to satin, is a stiffer cotton that is still breathable and is excellent for a button up blouse, or a flared skirt. The right side has a sheen to it, making it a beautiful fabric to show off in a shirt, but the soft feel of the right side also works as a liner to jackets and blazers. The Patriot Blue Bird Printed Cotton Sateen is perfect for a Memorial Day or July 4th barbecue, maybe in these Bright Summer Eyelet Shorts, paired with the eyelet above!

Another excellent cotton is madras. Light weight with a distinct pattern, it's an excellent choice for summer picnics in the park or at the beach. Check out this lovely Red, Blue, and Yellow Cotton Madras, perfect for swinging summer skirts and dresses.

    2.) Voile

Are you someone who fears the summer sun, and hides under trees and SPF 75? A voile top is perfect for you! French for veil, voile proves its namesake as a lightweight and breathable fabric. Voile is soft, smooth, and semi-sheer to sheer, so it's perfect for a light, long sleeve blouse to keep you cool and protected from the sun. Try out this Italian Orange Floral Cotton Voile in a light button-up blouse, or in this cool Lined Paper Bag Skirt with Pockets, or mix voile with cotton in this adorable Apron Dress!

    3.) Chiffon

Chiffon is often made of silk, and is also sheer and breathable. You can use this stunning fabric as a sheer body suit, a blouse, or even a layered skirt. Chiffon is good for giving your skin some coverage from the sun while still allowing you to appreciate the lazy summer breeze. 4.) Neoprene

This funky fabric is made from the same material as wet suits. Wet suits have a foam insert that keeps in the heat, but neoprene is simply the water wicking surface material. These are also great for body suits. This Light Lilac Leafy Digitally Printed Stretch Neoprene/Scuba Knit is perfect for our Neoprene Skater Skirt and Crop Top!

  • Seersucker

    • Before I started creating my own clothes, I had no clue textiles had so many variations.  Let me be honest, when I heard someone mention a seersucker suit I thought seersucker was a brand. Little did I know, it was one of my favorite warm weather fabrics ever created.  If you're not familiar with seersucker, it's a lightweight fabric more often in a stripe that has a puckered textured.  Not sure if you get the gist, but trust me when I say it's classic sophisticated and very versatile.
    • This wrap top was made using this red and white regatta seersucker from moodfabrics.com that's lightweight, very comfortable, easy to sew and cut and a summertime must have.  If you have another color in mind, don't worry here is a great assortment from moodfabrics.com to get you started.
    • This top was made using this Burdastyle 06/2011 #121A downloadable pattern with the following alterations:
    • Added 3" to the length of the pattern
    • Added a 4" band to the bottom of the top
    • Added 2 75"x 4" waist wraps
    • Added a 3" seam waist wrap opening
    • Added a 24" wide by 20" long sleeve.  Gathered the sleeve by adding three machine basting stitches down the length of the sleeve and securing the stitches.
    • Chandler's dress was made using my Mini Jadore Marie pattern with alterations.

  • Mood DIY: Sewing Leggings without a Serger

Leggings are quickly becoming a universal staple in everyone's wardrobe. You can wear them to the gym, to the couch, or pair them with a blouse and heels for a more fashion-forward look. Regardless of how you're styling them, sewing leggings can be a bit intimidating for newbies or those without a serger. Luckily, we have tips and tricks to make leggings easily with a regular sewing machine! Fabrics & materials used: There are several ways to get around using a serger, one of the easiest being zip-zag stitching. This can sometimes come with it's own set of problems, namely ugly seams that may bunch up or pucker when sewing something skin-tight like leggings. My favorite solution (as it is with most projects) is French seams. If you're not familiar with this type of seam, not to worry - they're incredibly simple! First, be sure that you have a walking foot for your sewing machine. These have wide plates and help to move your top and bottom fabrics at the same rate, causing less stretch and puckering while sewing knits. I recommend cutting out one size larger than you need, or adding an 1/8" to your seam allowance as it's pretty inevitable that sewing French seams with a zig-zag stitch will shrink your garment just slightly. Begin by sewing your pattern pieces WRONG sides together. Use your widest zig-zag setting to ensure the greatest stretch. Trim your seam allowance and fold your seam so the RIGHT sides are together. Zig-zag stitch again, encasing the raw edges within the seam, like you see below. This can be repeated for most seams for any project. One of the advantages to using them is that you can sew all WRONG sides together first and do a fitting before finishing your seams. Above, you can see all the finished seams from the right side of the garment. The image below shows what the inside looks like. Everything is neat and clean, not raw edges to scrunch up while you're working out! How do you sew knits without a serger? Do you have other tips to suggest? Comment below!

  • Victoria stripes

Lately, I've been obsessed with stripes and ruffles. There's something so completely classic and feminine about pairing the two that makes this obsession even more irresistible.  When I spotted this white/navy striped cotton woven at moodfabrics.com this kicked off my warm weather lust.  This cotton has a slightly raised texture with stretch in one direction.  It's lightweight and perfect for warm weather. Chandler's dress was made using my leftover Rag & Bone black and white striped cotton woven which looks very close to my fabric and performs almost identical.  The ruffle was made using the fabric I used for my top. The pattern I used for this top is vintage McCalls 4722 with the following pattern alterations: -Removed the buttons from the front of the pattern by cutting the front on the fold. -Added a seam and a 9"invisible zipper to the back. -Added an additional seam across the back 8" from the top of the back -Cut 2    4.5"x 60"  pieces of fabric and attached them to the shoulder, front and back seams pleating as I attached. -Pleated the sleeve and added a sleeve cuff with two buttons. • Trend Report: Athleisure 2017

Athletics gets luxurious as the runways' most comfortable new trend. Activewear isn't only for the active anymore. Brunch with the girls, yoga after work, or sipping a cappuccino at the local café while making eyes at the man-bunned barista are all perfectly acceptable places to wear Athleisure. The only thing you're not required to do is sweat. Let's take a closer look at what's running laps on the runway.

    1. ) Tight Fabrics

An active-wear classic, the tight fabrics of the runway are reminiscent of the spandex trend in the 80's. A tight spandex jumpsuit paired with heels is the perfect way to strut around the city, and short leather pants and a flat brimmed hat help you sweat it out without ever going out.
