The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Petaluma Pleated Trousers from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Cotton Linen Tencel Woven Blend

⇒ Choose a method for finishing the raw edges of the seam allowances all throughout this pattern. This fabric frays a lot and you’ll want to either serge, zigzag, blanket stitch, or at a very minimum, pink the raw edges of the fabric.

⇒ Pump the heat and the steam on your iron to get crisp seams and folds. This fabric is all natural fibers, so it can handle it.

⇒ Make sure you prewash your fabric before cutting out the pattern because this is a textile that will shrink in the washing machine and dryer.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

SIDE SEAM POCKETS

1. Pin the flat sides of the pockets right sides together with the side seams of the front pants pieces. Make sure the top of the pockets are 3 inches down from the waistline of the pants.
2. Sew the pockets to the pants side seams starting and ending ½ inch before the raw edges of the pockets, as shown in the photo below.
3. Repeat this process for the back pants pieces.
4. Press the pockets seams open and flat.

Step 2

PLEATS

1. You’re going to repeat this same process for all 4 pants pieces (2 fronts, 2 backs).
2. Starting from the side seam of the pants, bring the first notch and the second notch right sides together, then pin.
3. Pin the third and fifth notches right sides together.
4. Pin the 6th and 8th notches right sides together.
5. Pin the 9th and 11th notches right sides together. This will leave you with 4 complete pleats.
6. Sew the notches together with a 2 inch long seam.
7. Press the pleats into box pleats with the two knife pleats on the end facing outward from the box pleats (the first pleat should be folded toward the side seam and the last pleat should be folded toward the crotch seam).

Step 3

SEW SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the front pant pieces right sides together on top of the back pant pieces.
2. Pin the front pants to the back pants at the side seams and around the pocket bags.
3. Sew down the top part of the side seam, then around the pocket bag, and finally down the rest of the side seam.
4. Repeat for both the right and left pant legs.

Step 4

TOPSTITCH WAISTLINE

1. Topstitch over the pleats with a ⅜ inch seam allowance to keep them in place for the next few steps.

Step 5

BACK CROTCH SEAM

1. Place the two sides of the pants right sides together with the back crotch curves lined up.
2. Pin and sew the back crotch seam.

Step 6 

PREPARE FLY

1. Layout the fly facing pieces wrong sides together and fold the fly shield in half, longways, wrong sides together.
2. Serge, zigzag, or blanket stitch around the raw edges of both pieces.
3. Press the pieces flat.

Step 7

SEW FLY FACING

1. Place the flat edge of the fly facing right sides together with the wearer’s left side of the front crotch line.
2. Sew the fly facing to the front left crotch line.
3. Fold the fly facing toward the crotch line and press.
4. Place the zipper right sides down on top of the fly facing with the edge of the zipper tape lined up with the seam that connects the fly facing to the pants.
5. Pin and sew the side of the zipper tape furthest away from the fly facing seamline.
6. Fold the fly facing into the wrong side of the wearer’s left side of the pants and press.

Step 8

SEW FLY SHIELD

1. Flip the pants wrong sides out.
2. Unfold the zipper away from the fly facing.
3. Pin the unsewn side of the zipper tape right sides together with the wearer’s front right side of the crotch line.
4. Sew the zipper tape right sides together with the front right side of the pants.
5. Pin and sew the fly facing directly on top of the zipper seam on the front right side of the pants.

Step 9

FRONT CROTCH SEAM

1. Fold the pants in half wrong sides together with the front crotch lines lined up.
2. Pin and sew the rest of the front crotch seam directly under the zipper fly.

Step 10

INSEAM

1. Fold the pants in half right sides together with the inseams and crotch seams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the inseam.

Step 11

WAISTBAND TIES

1. Fold the waistband ties in half longways right sides together.
2. Sew the waistband ties with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
3. Flip the ties right sides out with a loop turner.
4. Press the ties flat with the seam on the fold.
5. Fold over the raw edges of the ties and topstitch to prevent them from fraying.

Step 12

WAISTBAND FLAP

1. Place the two waistband flap pieces on top of each other right sides together.
2. Sandwich one of the waist ties between the flat short edge of the waistband flap (NOT the short angled side of the flap).
3. Pin the waistband tie between the two waistband flap pieces.
4. Sew around the two long edges and the short flat edge of the waistband flap. DO NOT sew the short angled edge. Leave that edge open.
5. Clip the corners of the waistband flap, then flip it right sides out.
6. Press the waistband flap at the seams and poke out the corners with a point turner.

Step 13

CONSTRUCT WAISTBAND

1. Layout the waistband pieces as shown in the photo below.
2. Fold all the waistband pieces in half longways, wrong sides together, then press the fold into place.
3. Unfold all the waistband pieces and place the front left waistband right sides together on top of the back waistband.
4. Sandwich the other waistband tie in between the front left waistband and back waistband CENTERED in the top half of the waistband (the bottom half of the waistband is going to be the inside edge of the waistband that is touching your skin, so you want the tie to be on the outside).
5. Pin and sew the front left waistband to the back waistband with the waist tie sandwiched in between them.
6. Unfold the waistband pieces and press the seam open and flat.
7. Repeat the same process with the front right waistband and the back waistband, but this time with the waistband flap sandwiched between the two waistband pieces centered in the top hand of the waistband. IMPORTANT: Make sure the waistband flap is oriented on the waistband as shown in the photo below. The angled edge of the flap needs to be placed in between the waistband pieces such that it is hanging off the raw edge of the front of the waistband.
8. Pin and sew the front right waistband to the back waistband with the flap sandwiched between them.
9. Fold the entire waistband piece in half longways, right sides together.
10. Pin and sew the short overlapping edges of the waistband to close the ends.
11. Flip the waistband right sides out, poke out the corners with a point turner, then press the top fold again.

Step 14

ATTACH WAISTBAND

1. Unfold the waistband so that you’re only working with one layer of the waistband.
2. Pin the outer layer of the waistband to the waistline of the pants, lining up the closed ends of the waistband with the fly shield and fly facing, respectively.
3. Sew the outer layer of the waistband to the waistline of the pants. IMPORTANT: Make sure when sewing the waistband to the waistline that you don’t accidentally catch the ties or waistband flap in the waistline seam. Those pieces need to be able to move freely so that they can tie to each other around your waist.
4. Press a ½ inch fold into the inner layer of the waistband.
5. Pin the folded edge of the inner layer of the waistband to the seam between the pants and the outer layer of the waistband.
6. Sew a stitch in the ditch between the waistband and the waistline to attach the inner waistband to the wrong side of the pants.

Step 15

HOOK & EYE CLOSURE

1. Hand sew the “hook” piece of the hook and eye closures to the inside of the top overlapping waistband directly above the zipper on the wearer’s left side.
2. Hand sew the “eye” piece of the hook and eye closures to the outside of the bottom overlapping waistband directly above the zipper on the wearer’s right side.

Step 16

BLIND HEM

1. Finish the raw edges of the hem with a method of your choice (zigzag stitch, blanket stitch, serger, baby hem, etc).
2. Press a 1 inch fold into the hems of both of the pant legs.
3. Sew a blind hem into the fold of the pants hem either by hand or with the blind hem foot and stitch on your machine.

It’s about time we made something for the everyday professional! The Spoleto A-Line Skirt takes the classic workwear skirt and gives it a little more shape and interest, without making it any harder to style. Whether you’re headed to a job interview, giving a big presentation, or just want something polished enough for the office, this is the kind of piece that earns a permanent spot in your wardrobe.

The real focus of the Spoleto A-Line Skirt is its seamlines. Vertical panels shape the upper portion of the skirt before meeting a folded waistband, while the lower portion flares into an A-line silhouette. An asymmetrical seam connects the two sections, giving the skirt an almost architectural look that feels much more interesting than your everyday pencil skirt.

For our version, we chose a plaid Virgin Wool Twill Suiting with a mix of classic neutrals and deep green, navy, and red jewel tones, complete with a comfy twill lining. The suiting gives the skirt a traditional professional feel, but this pattern definitely doesn’t have to stay at the office. Try it in a dark wash denim or cotton corduroy for a more casual version that still lets those seamlines stand out.

Construction is pretty approachable, too. The invisible side seam zipper will likely be the trickiest part, but once that’s out of the way, the rest of the skirt comes together through straightforward panel construction. It’s a nice project if you’re ready to move beyond a basic skirt without taking on anything overly complicated.

Pair yours with a cashmere sweater and ballet flats for an everyday look, or add a blazer and pointed-toe heels when you need something a little more polished. How to Sew The Spoleto A-Line Skirt

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Spoleto A-Line Skirt from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Wool Twill Suiting

⇒ Keep your iron on medium heat with low steam, and make sure to use a piece of muslin to protect the wool from the iron when pressing your seams open.
⇒ Make sure all your pattern pieces are cut exactly on the grainline, because twill weaves are different in the warp direction than they are in the weft direction.
⇒ Use a sharp size 70 or 80 micotex needle on your machine to prevent thread pulls in the textile.

Step 1

TOP BACK

1. Layout the back left, back center, and back right skirt pieces next to each other in order.
2. Pin and sew the back left and back right to their respective sides of the back center.
3. Press the seams open and flat.

Step 2

TOP FRONT

1. Assemble the front of the skirt the same way you assembled the back.

Step 3

TOP SIDE SEAM

1. Place the back skirt right sides together with the front skirt.
2. Pin and sew the short sides of the front and back skirt pieces together.
3. Press the skirt side seam open and flat.

Step 4

LOWER SKIRT

1. Layout the lower skirt piece right sides up.
2. Line up the bottom of the upper skirt with the top of the lower skirt, right sides together.
3. Pin and sew the upper skirt to the lower skirt.

Step 5

LINING SKIRT

1. Mark the front and back skirt darts with a fabric marking tool of your choice.
2. Pin the front and back skirt darts.
3. Sew the skirt darts right sides together.
4. Press the skirt darts outward toward the side seam.
5. Place the back lining skirt right sides together on top of the front lining skirt.
6. Pin and sew the side seam that will end up on the wearer’s right side. The zipper will be installed later into the wearer’s left side seam. 
7. Press the lining side seam open and flat.

Step 6 

WAISTBAND

1. Pin one of the long edges of the waistband right sides together with the waistline of the outer skirt.
2. Sew the waistband to the skirt.
3. Press the waistband seam open and flat.
4. Pin and sew the other long edge of the waistband right sides together with the lining skirt.
5. Press the waistband seam between the lining open and flat.
6. Fold the waistband in half so that the lining skirt and the main skirt are touching wrong sides together, then press the top folded edge of the waistband.

Step 7

ZIPPER

1. Place the zipper face down (right sides together with one of the raw edges of the open side seam of the skirt, lining up the little plastic stopper at the top of the zipper with the fold at the top of the waistband.
2. Pin the zipper tape closest to the raw edge of the side seam to ONLY the outer layer of the skirt, not the lining.
3. Sew the pinned side of the zipper to the outer layer of the skirt, as close to the teeth as possible.
4. Flip the skirt inside out (wrong sides out) and pin the other side of the zipper tape right sides together with the other raw edge of the skirt side seam, lining up this side of the zipper so that it perfectly matches the side you already sewed.
5. Sew the other side of the zipper tape to the outer layer of the skirt.
6. Flip the skirt right sides out again and press the zipper seams.
7. Cut a ⅜ inch notch at the top of the waistband where you pressed the fold in the previous step to make room for the zipper.
8. Flip one of the side seams at the zipper inside out (wrong sides out) so that the main fabric and the lining are right sides together with the zipper sandwiched between them.
9. Pin the lining to the zipper and main fabric at the side seam, making sure the very top of the zipper tape is sticking out of the notch you cut into the waistband.
10. Sew the lining right sides together with the zipper and main fabric at the side seam until you get to the zipper pull. You can use a ⅜ inch or ¼ inch seam allowance for attaching the lining so that it’s not sewn so close to the zipper tape on the inside of the zipper.
11. Repeat the same process to attach the lining right sides together with the other side of the zipper.
12. Flip the skirt right sides out again and pin the waistband seams together so that the seam attaching the waistband to the lining and the seam attaching the waistband to the main fabric are pinned directly on top of each other, wrong sides together.
13. Sew a stitch in the ditch from the outside of the skirt between the skirt and the waistband to keep the lining and waistband from shifting when you wear the skirt.

Step 8

SIDE SEAMS

1. Fold the skirt right sides together and pin the rest of the side seam below the zipper, making sure the bottom points of the front and back skirt are lined up with each other at the side seam.
2. Sew the rest of the side seam under the zipper.
3. Pin and sew the lining side seam under the zipper.
4. Press the side seams open and flat.

Step 9

BLIND HEM

1. Press a ¼ inch fold into the hem of the main skirt.
2. Press another fold that is ¾ inches above the first fold.
3. Use a blind hem (either by hand or with your machine) to hem the skirt invisibly.
4. Sew a double rolled 1/4 inch hem into the lining so that it doesn’t stick out of the main skirt.

How to Sew The Boho Bow Bag

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Boho Bow Bag from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Denim

⇒ Wash and dry your fabric before cutting out the pattern.

⇒ Use a denim needle on your sewing machine. There are going to be some parts of this bag where you’re sewing through 4-6 layers of denim at a time.

⇒ Turn the heat and the steam way up on your iron when pressing after every step to make sure you get crisp seams and corners.

Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed

• (A) BAG
  • Fabric – Cut 2 on Fold
• (B) TIES
  • Fabric – Cut 2

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

BAG SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the front and back bag pieces right sides together.
2. Pin and sew the sides and bottom of the bag.
3. Serge or zigzag the raw edges of the seam allowance on the sides and bottom of the bag.

Step 2

HEM BAG OPENING

1. Before completing this step, check step 7 for alternate finishing options.
2. Fold a double rolled ¼ inch fold into the long edges of the bag straps (which are connected to the top of the bag).
3. Start sewing the rolled hem on the sewing machine and keep folding/rolling as you sew. I find that this is easier than folding, pressing, and pinning before sewing.
4. Hem both sides of the straps and top of the bag in this manner.
5. Press the hem

Step 3

SQUARE OFF CORNERS

1. Fold the bag in half right sides together so that the straps and side seams are laying flat on top of each other, as shown in the photo below. Make sure the corners of the bottom of the bag come to a point.
2. Measure 1.5 inches from the seam at the bottom corner of the bag. Make a mark with tailor’s chalk or a fabric marking pen.
3. Flip your ruler perpendicularly to that mark to draw a line across the corner of the bag.
4. Pin the corner of the bag along that line.
5. Repeat this process for the other bottom corner of the bag, making sure the two corners are folded and pinned separately from one another.
6. Sew across the chalk lines separately to box off both bottom corners of the bag. This gives the bag structure and shape.

Step 4

CONNECT STRAPS WITH FRENCH SEAMS

1. Pin the tops of the straps wrong sides together.
2. Sew the tops of the straps wrong sides together with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
3. Press the seam open and flat.
4. Fold the straps right sides together over the seam at the top of the strap and pin again.
5. Sew the straps right sides together over the ¼ inch seam allowance with a ⅜ inch seam allowance to make sure the first seam allowance is hidden. This is a french seam.
6. Press the seam flat.

Step 5

MAKE BOW TIES

1. Fold the bow ties longways right sides together.
2. Sew the folded strips with a ½ inch seam allowance.
3. Trim the seam allowance with pinking shears to eliminate bulk.
4. Flip the bow ties right sides out with a loop turner.
5. Press the bow ties so that they are folded on the seam.
6. Topstitch two parallel straight stitches over the bow ties with a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
7. Sew a thick bartack stitch over the short ends of the bow ties to prevent the denim from fraying.
8. ALTERNATE FINISHING METHOD: If you are having a hard time flipping the denim right sides out with the loop turner, you can instead fold the bow ties so that their long edges meet in the center of the strip, then fold them in half again to encase those raw edges. Then, topstitch over the folded edge with an ⅛ inch seam allowance.

Step 6 

ATTACH BOW TIES

1. Find the center front and center back of the bag opening and mark it with a pin.
2. Pin the short edges of the straps to the center front and center back of the bag opening, making sure there is at least ½ inch of strap hanging on the inside of the bag for the stitch to catch onto.
3. Topstitch over the straps from the outside of the bag, making sure that the topstitch goes directly over the seam you made to hem the edges of the bag opening.
4. Tie the bag straps.

Step 7

ALTERNATE FINISHING OPTION

1. If you aren’t a fan of the french seam at the top of the strap, pause after the first step.
2. Serge the two short edges at the tops of the straps.
3. Sew the straps right sides together and press the seam open and flat.
4. Now you can proceed to step 2 and sew a rolled hem along the edges of both straps.

How to Sew The Carmel Twin Set

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Carmel Twin Set from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Rib Knit

⇒ Use a ballpoint/stretch/jersey needle on your sewing machine when sewing this twin set together to prevent skipped stitches.

⇒ Use a stitch that has the capacity to stretch for every single seam on this garment. You can use a zigzag stitch, a lightning stitch, or a straight stretch stitch. If you have a serger, you can use that too, as long as you set your serger to stretch settings.

⇒ Make sure the ribs on the fabric are all parallel with the grainline on the pattern to ensure the stretch direction of the fabric is horizontal over your body.

Pattern Pieces & Fabric Cuts Needed

  • Fabric – Cut 1 on Fold
• (B) CARDIGAN FRONT
  • Fabric – Cut 2 Mirrored

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

TANK TOP SIDE & SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Place the front of the tank top right sides together on top of the back of the tank top with the shoulders and sides lined up.
2. Pin and sew the front and back of the tank top together at the shoulder and side seams using a stretch stitch.

Step 2

NECKLINE BINDING

1. Cut binding strips that are 2 inches wide and at least 70 inches long. Make sure when cutting out the binding that the ribs are perpendicular with the longest measurement of the strip.
2. If you can’t get one continuous piece of binding that is 70 inches long, sew your strips right sides together at the short ends to create one long strip.
3. Layout the neckline of the tank top so that the front and back neckline are laying on top of each other, wrong sides together.
4. Cut a strip of binding that is a few inches shorter than the neckline when UNSTRETCHED. You want to make sure that this strip of binding can be gently stretched to be the same length as your neckline with little effort, but the unstretched binding should be a little shorter than the circumference of the neckline.
5. Pin and sew the neckline binding along the short raw edges to create a closed loop.
6. Line up the seam on the neckline binding with the center back neckline of the tank top.
7. Pin the seam of the neckline binding right sides together with the center back neckline of the tanktop.
8. Evenly pin the rest of the neckline binding around the neckline, right sides together.
9. Sew the neckline binding to the neckline with a ½ inch seam allowance.
10. Trim the seam allowance with pinking shears to eliminate bulk.
11. Fold the outer edge of the neckline binding toward the seam allowance of the neckline, then fold it over itself again until that fold meets the neckline seam itself.
12. Pin the inner folded edge of the neckline binding to the neckline seam, encasing the pinked seam allowance.
13. Ensure that the final width of the folded neckline binding is consistently ½ inch around the entire neckline.
14. Pin the folded binding around the entire neckline.
15. Sew a stitch in the ditch from the outside of the tank top into the neckline seam, making sure the stitch is nearly invisible from the outside and that it catches the folded edge of the neckline binding on the inside.
16. Press the neckline binding to make the folds all lay flat.

Step 3

ARMSCYE BINDING

1. The armscye binding is attached in the same manner as the neckline binding.
2. Cut strips of armscye binding that are a couple inches shorter than the armscyes when unstretched, but when stretched gently, are the same length as the armscye circumference.
3. Pin and sew the short ends of the armscye binding strips right sides together to create closed loops.
4. Pin the armscye binding right sides together with the armscyes, making sure the seam of the binding is lined up with the side seams of the tank top.
5. Sew the armscye binding to the armscye with a ½ inch seam allowance.
6. Trim the seam allowance with pinking shears to eliminate bulk.
7. Fold the outer edge of the armscye binding toward the seam allowance of the armscye, then fold it over itself again until that fold meets the armscye seam itself.
8. Pin the inner folded edge of the armscye binding to the armscye seam, encasing the pinked seam allowance.
9. Ensure that the final width of the folded binding is consistently ½ inch around the entire armscye.
10. Pin the folded binding around the entire armscye.
11. Sew a stitch in the ditch from the outside of the tank top into the armscye seam, making sure the stitch is nearly invisible from the outside and that it catches the folded edge of the armscye binding on the inside.
12. Press the armscye binding to make the folds all lay flat.
13. Repeat for both armscyes.

Step 4

HEM TANK TOP

1. Press a ⅝ inch fold into the bottom hem of the tank top.
2. Hem the tank top with a stretch stitch and a ⅜ inch seam allowance to leave a ¼ inch of raw hem on the inside of the tank top.
3. Press the hem of the tank top again.

Step 5

CARDIGAN SIDE & SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Place the fronts of the cardigan right sides together on top of the back of the cardigan with the sides and shoulders lined up.
2. Pin and sew the fronts and back of the cardigan together at the shoulders and sides using a stretch stitch.

Step 6 

CARDIGAN SLEEVES

1. Fold the sleeves in half right sides together with the sleeve inseams overlapping.
2. Pin and sew the sleeve inseams.
3. Press the seam allowance of the sleeve inseams open and flat.
4. Pin the sleeves right sides together with the armscyes of the cardigan, making sure that the fronts of the sleeves are lined up with the front for the cardigan.
5. Sew the sleeves into the armscyes.
6. Flip the cardigan right sides out.

Step 7

HEM RAW EDGES

1. Press a ½ inch fold the raw edges of the center front opening of the cardigan toward the inside of the garment.
2. Pin the fold in place.
3. Press a ⅝ inch fold into the hem of the cardigan.
4. Pin the folded edge of the cardigan.
5. Topstitch over the center front folds and folded hem of the cardigan with a ⅜ inch seam allowance all around.
6. Press a ½ inch fold into the ends of the sleeves to tuck the raw edges of the sleeves into the cardigan.
7. Topstitch over the sleeve fold with a ⅜ inch seam allowance.

Step 8

CARDIGAN NECKLINE BINDING

1. Fold the cardigan in half wrong sides together to isolate the raw edge of the neckline.
2. Cut a strip of binding for the neckline of the cardigan that is 2.5 inches wide and at least 60 inches long. 
3. If you’re unable to cut a continuous piece of binding that is 60 inches long, sew several strips right sides together on their short ends to make one long strip.
4. Fold the strip of binding in half to find the center point of the strip.
5. Pin the center of the binding strip right sides together with the center back neckline of the cardigan.
6. Place two pins into the neckline binding that are a few inches shorter than the length of the neckline.
7. Stretch the neckline binding so that the pins are lined up with the end of the neckline on both sides.
8. Pin the neckline binding right sides together with the rest of the cardigan neckline.
9. Sew the neckline binding to the neckline with a ½ inch seam allowance, stopping at the end of the neckline and leaving long tails on the end of the neckline binding to use as the waist ties.

Step 9

WAIST TIES

1. Fold the waist ties of the neckline binding right sides together.
2. Sew the waist ties with a ½ inch seam allowance starting from the end of the ties and ending at the seam where the binding meets the neckline of the cardigan. The final width of the waist ties should be ¾ inches.
3. Insert your loop turner into the tube you just sewed starting at the opening at the center front neckline.
4. Feed the loop turner to the end of the waist tie and hook it around the raw edge.
5. Flip the waist ties right sides out with the loop turner.
6. Press the waist ties so that they’re folded on the seam you just sewed.
7. Repeat for both waist ties.

Step 10

FINISH BINDING

1. Fold the remainder of the cardigan neckline binding around the neckline in the same manner as the neckline and armscyes of the tank top.
2. Pin the folded cardigan neckline binding around the entire neckline. The width of the binding around the neckline of the cardigan should be ¾ inches.
3. Sew a stitch in the ditch of the neckline seam, making sure the stitch is nearly invisible from the outside of the garment and catches the inner folded edge of the binding on the inside of the garment.
4. Press the cardigan neckline binding.

Step 11

BUTTON HOLE

1. Open up the cardigan to expose the side seam on the wearer’s right-hand side of the garment.
2. Press a small piece of knit fusible interfacing into the waistline of the side seam on the wrong side of the fabric (the waistline will be the smallest part of the waist of the cardigan where the side seam cuts in).
3. Use a marking tool of your choice to mark a 1 inch gap on top of the fusible interfacing. It needs to be 1 inch so that it is slightly wider than the waist ties are.
4. Make sure that the opening of the buttonhole foot attachment is also 1 inch so that the buttonhole perfectly lines up with your markings on the interfacing.
5. Sew a buttonhole onto the markings on the interfacing.
6. Open the buttonhole with a seam ripper.
7. Carefully pull up the fusible interfacing around the buttonhole and trim it as close to the buttonhole as you can.

How to Sew The Belladonna Wrap Dress

The instructions provided below are designed to guide you through sewing the Belladonna Wrap Dress from start to finish.

3 Tips for Sewing with Viscose Georgette

⇒ Use a sharp skinny microtex needle (size 60 or 70) to prevent thread pulls in the fabric while you’re sewing.

⇒ Use lots of pins to hold your pattern pieces down while cutting out the fabric so that the georgette doesn’t shift on the bias and make your pieces wonky and misshapen.

⇒ Use a rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat to cut out your pattern pieces to make sure your fabric doesn’t shift around on the bias while cutting.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

SHOULDER & SIDE SEAMS

1. Place the front dress pieces right sides together on top of the back dress piece with the sides and shoulders lined up.
2. Pin and sew the front dress pieces to the back dress pieces at the sides and shoulders.
3. Repeat this step for both the main fabric and the lining fabric.

Step 2

SLEEVES

1. Fold the sleeves in half right sides together with the inseams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the sleeve inseams.
3. Clip ¼ inch notches around the inside circle of the sleeve ruffles.
4. Pin the inside circle of the sleeve ruffles right sides together with the bottom opening of the sleeves at the wrist.
5. Sew the sleeve ruffles to the bottoms of the sleeves.
6. Hem the bottom of the sleeve ruffles either by serging the raw edges, folding them up ½ inch, and sewing with a straight stitch OR by sewing a baby double rolled hem.

Step 3

INSERT SLEEVES

1. Place the lining inside of the main fabric so that they’re wrong sides together.
2. Flip the two pieces so that the lining is on the outside and the main fabric is on the inside.
3. Pin the sleeves right sides together with the main fabric dress from the inside of the dress.
4. Sew (and serge, if you want to finish your seams) the sleeves to the armscyes.
5. Flip the dress right sides out so that the main fabric is on the outside again.

Step 4

WAIST TIES

1. Fold the waist ties in half longways right sides together.
2. Pin the long raw edges of the fabric together, then pin one of the short raw edges together.
3. Sew over the pinned short side of the waist ties, starting from the folded edge, pivot around the corner, then sew the long side, leaving the opposite short end open.
4. Clip the corners around the seams of the waist ties.
5. Flip the waist ties right sides out from the raw edge opening using a loop turner.
6. Press the waist ties so that the seam is folded and the corners are poked out.
7. Pin the raw edges of the waist ties to the raw edges of the center front opening of the dress, right under where the neckline ends (there is a point on either side of the front dress pieces. You basically want to pin the ties at that point).

Step 5

SKIRT RUFFLE

1. This step is going to be a lot easier if you cut out the skirt ruffle using a rotary cutter and self healing mat. Trust me.
2. Hem the outer edge of the spiral-shaped skirt ruffle by either sewing a baby double rolled hem OR by serging the raw edge, folding it over ½ inch, and topstitching over the folded serged edge.
3. Finish the two short ends of the skirt ruffle with a baby double rolled hem.
4. Sew two parallel gathering stitches with a 4 millimeter stitch length along the inner edge of the spiral-shaped skirt ruffle.
5. Pull on the top threads on either end of the skirt ruffle to begin gathering that edge.
6. Gather the top edge of the skirt ruffle until it is the same length as the skirt from one waist tie, around the entire hem of the skirt, to the other waist tie.

Step 6 

ATTACH RUFFLE TO SKIRT HEM

1. Pin the raw gathered edge of the skirt ruffle right sides together with the raw edge of the main fabric skirt, starting directly under one waist tie, pinning all the way around the hem of the skirt, and pinning the other end of the ruffle to the other waist tie.
2. In one continuous seam, sew the waist ties to the waistline of the skirt, then sew the ruffle to the hem of the skirt, making sure to finish the raw edges with a stitch of your choosing (I serged mine). Make sure that you are ONLY pinning and sewing the ruffles and ties to the MAIN FABRIC, not the lining.

Step 7

FINISH NECKLINE

1. Separate the lining from the main fabric of the neckline.
2. Tuck the bulk of the dress into the bodice so that you can pin the lining and the main fabric right slides together at the neckline.
3. Sew the lining and main fabric right sides together at the neckline from one waist tie to the other.
4. Cut notches in the neckline seam allowance around the shoulder and back neckline.
5. Flip the dress right sides out and press the seam between the lining and main fabric around the neckline.

Step 8

MAKE WAIST TIE OPENING

1. Layout your dress with the wearer’s front left side overlapping the wearer’s front right side.
2. Place two pins on the wearer’s right side seam at the natural waist that are the same distance apart as the waist tie is in width.
3. Press a tiny piece of fusible interfacing to the side seam on the wrong side of the fabric where the pins are to reinforce the fabric for the next steps. If you don’t have fusible interfacing, just pin a small piece of fabric under the pins.
4. Make sure the lining and the main fabric are both pinned together at the side seam with the fusible interfacing between them.
5. Sew a buttonhole through both the lining and main fabric that is as tall as the space between the pins. This will ensure that the buttonhole is exactly the same height as your waist tie.
6. Cut the buttonhole open with a seam ripper.

Step 9

HEM LINING

1. Sew a double rolled ¼ inch hem around the entire lining skirt from one waist tie to the other.
2. Press the hem so it lays flat.

Step 10

NECKLINE RUFFLES

1. There are two ways to finish the neckline ruffle. You can either sew tiny rolled hems into both of the long sides OR you can fold it in half right sides together longways, sew the raw edges together, and flip it right sides out with a loop turner. Both methods result in roughly the same finish. I chose to sew tiny rolled hems along both long raw edges, but it can be tricky with this fabric so I wanted to provide an alternative method.
2. Sew two parallel gathering stitches with a 4 millimeter stitch length along the bottom edge of the neckline ruffle.

Step 11

ATTACH NECKLINE RUFFLES

1. Line up the center of the neckline ruffle with the center back neckline.
2. Pin the right side of the neckline ruffle to the lining side of the dress at the center back neckline.
3. Gather the neckline ruffle by pulling on the top threads until the ruffle is the same length on both sides as either side of the neckline.
4. Fold over the short raw edges of the neckline ruffle and topstitch them to hide the raw fabric.
5. Pin the bottom gathered edge of the neckline ruffle all the way around the neckline so that the gathered edge is right sides together with the lining of the dress. Pin the ends of the ruffles so that they end right at the waist ties.
6. Topstitch around the neckline with a ⅛ inch seam allowance so that you’re just catching the bottom gathered edge of the ruffle in the neckline.
7. Gently STEAM, but do not press the neckline ruffles so that they relax and lay nicely.

Step 12

CHOKER (OPTIONAL)

1. Cut a strip of fabric that is 2 inches wide and at least 4 times the length of the circumference of your neck.
2. Fold the strip of fabric longways right sides together.
3. Pin and sew the raw edges of the long sides together, then pivot at the corner to sew one of the short ends shut, leaving the opposite short end open.
4. Flip the strip of fabric right sides out with a loop turner and press the strip so that it’s folded on the seam.
5. Turn the raw edges of the open end to the inside of the tube and press that end flat.
6. Topstitch over the folded open edge of the strip.

How to Sew The Palisade Peplum Blouse

3 Tips for Sewing with Embroidered Cotton Eyelet

⇒ Wash and dry your fabric BEFORE cutting out your pattern pieces. Cotton shrinks!!!

⇒ Use a super sharp, super skinny microtex needle on your machine to prevent thread pulls in the fabric. The embroidered parts of the fabric are especially susceptible to thread pulls.

⇒ Make sure that your pattern pieces are all cut out on the SAME grainline so that the patterns in the eyelet are all facing the same direction when wearing the final garment.

Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.

Step 1

SHOULDER RUFFLES

1. Sew a double rolled baby hem along the curved edge of the shoulder ruffle pieces.
2. Press the rolled hem.
3. Sew two parallel gathering stitches with a stitch length of 4 millimeters along the straight raw edge of the shoulder ruffles.
4. Don’t gather the shoulder ruffles just yet, we’ll do it in a later step.

Step 2

SLEEVES

1. Fold the sleeves in half right sides together with the sleeve inseams lined up.
2. Pin and sew the sleeve inseams.
3. Sew two parallel gathering stitches around the inner circle of the sleeve ruffles.
4. Pull on the top threads of the gathering stitches to gather the inner circle of the sleeve ruffle.
5. Gather the sleeve ruffle until it is the same length as your sleeve opening.
6. Pin the gathered edge of the sleeve ruffle to the bottom of the sleeve, right sides together so that the longer side of the circle ruffle is lined up with the sleeve inseam and the shorter side of the circle ruffle is facing the outside of the sleeve.
7. Sew the ruffle to the sleeve, then finish the raw edges of the seam allowance with a zigzag stitch or serger.

Step 3

SHOULDER SEAMS

1. Place the center back piece and the center front pieces on top of each other right sides together with the shoulders lined up.
2. Pin and sew the center back and center front pieces together at the shoulders.
3. Press the shoulder seams open and flat.

Step 4

ATTACH SHOULDER RUFFLES

1. Open the center front from the center back at the shoulder seams and lay the pieces right sides up.
2. Gather the shoulder ruffles from step 1 until they are short enough to fit between the BACK HEM and the FRONT NOTCH (you don’t want the ruffle to go all the way down to the front hem, make sure you gather it enough that it stops at the notch).
3. Pin the raw edge of the ruffle to the raw edge of the center front and back blouse pieces, right sides together.
4. Sew and serge (or zigzag) the ruffle to the sides of the center front and back blouse pieces.

Step 5

FRONT SIDES

1. Layout the side front and side back pieces with shoulders lined up as shown in the photo below, right sides up.
2. Place the side back pieces on top of the side front pieces right sides together.
3. Pin and sew the side back pieces to the side front pieces at the shoulders.
4. Open the side front pieces from the side back pieces at the shoulder seams and press the seam open and flat.
5. Layout the side blouse pieces right sides together with the center blouse pieces, right sides together, making sure that the side fronts are touching the center fronts and the side backs are touching the center back.
6. Pin the side blouse pieces to the center blouse pieces with the ruffle sandwiched between them, right sides together.
7. Sew and serge (or zigzag) the side blouse pieces to the center blouse pieces.
8. Open the side blouse pieces from the center blouse pieces and press the seams open and flat, making sure the shoulder ruffles are facing away from the center of the blouse.

Step 6 

SIDE SEAMS

1. Fold the blouse at the shoulder seams, right sides together.
2. Pin and sew the front and back of the blouse together at the side seams.

Step 7

ATTACH SLEEVES

1. Place the sleeves inside of the blouse, right sides together.
2. Pin the sleeve caps into the armscyes with the fronts of the sleeves lined up with the front of the blouse.
3. Sew the sleeve caps into the armscyes.
4. Serge or zigzag the seam allowances of the sleeves.

Step 8

RUFFLED PEPLUM

1. Sew gathering stitches to the inner circle of the peplum piece the same way you did for the shoulder ruffles and the sleeve ruffles.
2. Gather the peplum until it’s the same length as the hem of the blouse.
3. Pin the gathered edge of the peplum right sides together with the hem of the blouse, making sure the open ends of the ruffled peplum are lined up with the opening at the front of the blouse.
4. Sew and serge (or zigzag) the gathered edge of the peplum to the hem of the blouse.

Step 9

HEM NECKLINE

1. Before hemming the neckline, I serged the whole front opening of the blouse from the hem of the peplum, around the back of the neck, down to the other peplum hem. You can zigzag stitch here, or do a double rolled hem to hide the raw edges.
2. After serging the neckline, press a ⅜ inch fold into the serged edge toward the wrong side of the fabric and pin in place.
3. Sew the folded neckline with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 10

BUTTONS & BUTTON LOOPS

1. Cut strips of the elastic cord that are 1.5 inches long.
2. Ties the elastic cord strips into an overhand loop knot (I had to look up what this knot was called, I didn’t know it had an official name. Basically, you fold the cord in half, wrap the folded part around your finger, then pull the folded part through the loop around your finger and pull tight).
3. Pin and sew the loop knots to the bottom of the V-neck and the seam between the blouse hem and the peplum.
4. Pin and sew buttons by hand on the opposite side of the center front of the blouse.

Step 11

LACE TRIM

1. Pin and sew lace trim to the bottom hem of the peplum, folding the raw edges toward the inside of the blouse at the center front edges.
2. Pin and sew lace trim to the bottom hems of the sleeves, sewing the two raw edges of the trim to each other to make a closed loop with no visible raw edges from the outside of the blouse.

Different jeans silhouettes will come in and out of style, but denim with contrast stitching is forever. Despite how they look, these barrel-leg jeans are surprisingly simple to make. There are no darts, no pleats, and no complicated pocket construction.
