L’assenza di Mario Monicelli pesa, perché non era solo un vecchio regista o un venerato maestro, era  una voce schietta, senza inutili giri di parole. Era un pensiero lucido, presente, in grado di chiarire il sentire silenzioso di molti. Da più di un anno lui non c’ è più, ma i suoi film, i suoi spudorati e bellissimi film non ci lasceranno mai. Tra tanti oggi mi è tornato in mente  ‘Vogliamo i colonnelli‘. Nella notte tra il 7 e l’8 dicembre 1970 in Italia fu messo in atto un tentativo di golpe militare, diventato famoso come golpe Borghese. Gli Italiani non si accorsero di nulla, solo tre mesi dopo un giornale rivelò che un gruppo eversivo di destra aveva tentato di rovesciare la democrazia. Di questa vicenda, come di tantissime altre nella nostra Storia, non si è mai saputa tutta la verità. Mario Monicelli pochi anni dopo nel 1973 ne fa un film tragico e divertentissimo, dove ogni riferimento a persone e a eventi realmente accaduti è ovviamente casuale. Il registro è quello dei b movie italiani anni ’70, la fotografia, il ritmo, le gag sono quelli, anche l’uso di certi attori caratteristi, seppure eccezionali, fa confondere questo film con una strampalata commedia sexy di quegli anni. In realtà quello che Monicelli ci dice con queste scelte di regia è che ad essere scadenti sono la storia che racconta e che ridicoli sono i suoi personaggi, non il film che invece è di una qualità finissima. A garantirlo ulteriormente ci sono Ugo Tognazzi, tra i più grandi attori del cinema italiano, la sceneggiatura di Age e Scarpelli, i costumi di Piero Tosi, le musiche di Carlo Rustichelli, il montaggio di Ruggero Mastroianni e la raffinata grafica di Sandro Lodolo. Non vi consiglio di vederlo, ve lo impongo. Dolcemente.

The absence of Mario Monicelli weighs, because he wasn’t just an old director or a revered master, he was an outspoken voice, without any useless twist of  words. He was a clear thinking, always present, able to explain the silent  feeling of many. He left more than a year ago, but his films, his shameless and beautiful films never will leave us. Among many titles today I came back to ‘We Want the Colonels’. In the night between 7 and 8 December 1970 in Italy it was put in place an attempted military coup, become famous as the golpe Borghese. The Italians didn’t perceive  anything, only three months after a newspaper revealed that a subversive right wing group had attempted to overthrow democracy. About this story, like many others in our history, was never known the whole truth. Mario Monicelli few years later in 1973 makes a tragic and humorous movie, where all references to people and real events is obviously accidental. The style is that of the 70s Italian B movie, the photography, the rhythm, the gags, even the use of certain character actors, though exceptional, make us confuse this film with an odd sex comedy of those years. Actually what  Monicelli tells with these choices of direction is that to be trashy is the story , to be ridiculous are the characters, not the movie, that instead it’s of a fine quality. As further evidence there are: Ugo Tognazzi, one of the greatest actors of Italian cinema, the script by Age and Scarpelli, costumes by Piero Tosi, music by Carlo Rustichelli, the editing by Ruggero Mastroianni and the refined graphics of Sandro Lodolo. I’m not suggesting to see it, I’m imposing. Sweetly.

Tra circa un mese inizierà il Festival di Cannes e allora vedremo Marilyn campeggiare come un monumento sulla croisette, con una torta di compleanno tra le mani e quell’ espressione di estasi sul viso che solo lei sapeva fare. In realtà non si celebra la sua nascita, ma la sua morte, avvenuta 50 anni fa e precisamente il 5 agosto del 1962. In una puntata di Mad Man Don Draper divide le donne in quelle che si identificano in Marilyn e in quelle che si sentono Jackie, in effetti a essere sconvolte e colpite al cuore per quella morte improvvisa, sono più le donne che gli uomini. E forse anche dopo cinquant’anni siamo ancora noi donne a mantenere viva Marilyn, non come una semplice icona ma come un essere amato e mai dimenticato. Non posso fare a meno di collezionare le immagini per me inedite che  internet mi regala. Non riesco a non emozionarmi nel trovare un filmato di Marilyn a Roma che riceve il David, accanto a lei l’attrice che ne rappresenta il contrario, quella spettinata e senza trucco, quella che vince gli oscar e ha quei riconoscimenti artistici che Marilyn ha sempre desiderato, Anna Magnani. In quelle immagini un po’ tremolanti ci siamo un po’ tutte, non ne ami una a discapito dell’altra, perché non c’è antitesi a ben guardare.

In about a month Cannes Film Festival will start and then we’ll see Marilyn dominating the Croisette, with a birthday cake in her hands and that expression of ecstasy on her face that only she could do. Actually they don’t celebrate her birth, but her death happened 50 years ago, precisely on August 5 1962. In an episode of Mad Man Don Draper divide women into those who identify themselves with Marilyn and those who feel Jackie, in fact to be shocked and stricken to the heart by that sudden death, are more women than men. And maybe even after fifty years we women are the ones who still keep Marilyn alive, not just as an icon but as a beloved and never forgotten creature. I can’t avoid to collect those images, for me unknown, that the internet presents to me. I can’t avoid to move me finding a short film of Marilyn in Rome receiving the David award, beside her the actress who represents her opposite, disheveled and without makeup, that one who wins the Oscar and gets those reviews Marilyn has always wanted, Anna Magnani. In these flickering images you see all women, you don’t love one to the detriment of the other, because there is no antithesis at a closer look. 

Il mare è un soggetto che la fotografia e la pittura di paesaggio prediligono da sempre, basti pensare che esiste un vero e proprio genere, la cosiddetta ‘marina’, che io amo molto. Non è facile esprimere qualcosa di rilevante con un soggetto così abusato. In verità i paesaggi di Mikael Kennedy mi hanno catturato non per una distinzione ma per un’associazione. Mi hanno ricordato le sensazioni che danno i quadri di un pittore del romanticismo tedesco: Caspar David Friedrich, lo stesso senso di fascinazione e vertigine insieme. Scorrendoli attentamente mi sono poi trovata davanti ad una vera e propria dichiarazione di poetica e ho capito che il vero soggetto sul quale ha lavorato Kennedy non è il mare né il paesaggio, ma la pittura di Friedrich. E credetemi non è poco.

The sea is a subject very much loved by photography and landscape painting, just think that there is a real genre, the ‘seascape’, which I do love. It’s not easy to express something relevant with a subject so abused. Actually the landscapes of Mikael Kennedy drew my attention not for a distinction but for an association. They reminded me of the feelings that give me a painter of German Romanticism: Caspar David Friedrich, the same sense of fascination and vertigo together. Carefully observing the photos I then found a real declaration of poetics and I realized that the real subject on which Kennedy worked is not the sea or the landscape, but Friedrich’s painting. Believe me, not a small thing .

Susanna è la commedia perfetta per una fredda sera d’inverno. Sin dai primi istanti vi farà sentire la primavera aleggiare insieme alla risata di Katharine Hepburn e ai goffi tentativi di Cary Grant di sfuggirle. Per il grandissimo Howard Hawks fu un insuccesso al botteghino, ma negli anni questa commedia è diventata una delle più amate di tutti i tempi.  Ogni scena è un piccolo capolavoro di umorismo, i dialoghi e le situazioni si susseguono senza mai perdere il ritmo. Gli abiti disegnati da Howard Greer (maestro di Edith Head) fanno brillare la Hepburn sia fasciata di lamé sia in pantaloni di flanella. Ma la mise che non dimenticheremo mai è la vestaglia bordata di piume indossata da Cary Grant. Una menzione speciale va alla splendida interpretazione di Baby, il leopardo.

“Non è vero che lei non mi piace Susanna, perché dopo tutto nei momenti tranquilli mi sento stranamente attratto da lei, ma il fatto è che non ci sono stati momenti tranquilli.”

Bringing up Baby is the perfect comedy for a cold winter night. From the first moments you will feel spring fluttering in the air with Katharine Hepburn‘s laughter and Cary Grant‘s clumsy attempts to escape from her. For the great Howard Hawks was a failure at the box office, but over the years this fine play has become one of the most popular of all time. Each scene is a small masterpiece of humor, dialogue and situations follow one another without ever missing a beat. The costumes designed by Howard Greer (Edith Head teacher) make shine Hepburn both when swathed in gold lame and wearing flannels trousers. But the outfit we’ll never forget is the dressing gown bordered with feathers worn by Cary Grant. We can not fail to mention the wonderful interpretation of Baby, the leopard.

Il paesaggio invernale è sublime, ma un po’ spento di capelli. Cinque pezzi facili per ridare tono e colore a questi giornate in scala di grigi.

C’è qualcosa di profondo ed enigmatico nel fascino di Jeanne Moreau, qualcosa di irripetibile. Nessuno si può paragonare a lei, forse solo Coco Chanel in un certo senso poteva tenerle testa. Entrambe minute nel fisico, enormi nella personalità. Come sostengono Jules e Jim il suo è un volto arcaico e per questo indimenticabile, ha un’aria apparentemente contenuta ma dai suoi occhi escono lampi. Truffaut diceva di lei: “ogni volta che me la immagino a distanza la vedo che legge non un giornale ma un libro, perché Jeanne Moreau non fa pensare al flirt ma all’amore”.
