Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao Did it Again!

Oops, Pac-Man did it again! Another glorious victory for Manny in winning the non-titled welterweight match against De La Hoya. I expected that their fight will not favor Pac-Man against Golden Boy, but it proved me wrong. In the first round of the fight, Pac-Man has showed Golden Boy that he's tough fighter. De La Hoya can't even give hard blows to Pacquiao that all he could do is to cover. Succeeding rounds can be predicted that Pacquiao has dominated the points over De La Hoya. Much more convincing when the last two rounds (7 and 8) that Pacquiao cornered De La Hoya and gave him succeeding hard blows.

I am also quite upset the way De La Hoya fought with Pacquiao (although I am in favor for Pacquiao), believing that he's more experienced boxer and a champion of several titles. He's taller, bigger than Pacquiao and has longer reach, but Pacquiao has no trouble giving in few jabs to De La Hoya. Since De La Hoya entered the ring, he's facial expression looks like he's not comfortable. Quite intriguing further on Freddie Roach's statement that he knew why De La Hoya lost in his last big fight year ago.

What became advantage for Pacquiao is he's younger, energetic and has the speed. De La Hoya is 35 already against 29 Pacquiao. Even the way De La Hoya fought seems he has no energy in giving jabs and hard blows that in the time he jabs, Pacquiao fought back immediately keeping De La Hoya off pace.

It's a good decision that De La Hoya's team conceded in the fight and didn't continue the 9th round. Could this be the last fight for De La Hoya? Only he can tell as he still believes that his heart still can fight, but when his physical doesn't respond, what can he do?

Pacquiao proved it again that he's a real champion. And to De La Hoya, still a champion who faught in great titles and I hope that he can still continue to do song recording - "Ven A Mi".

Life In The 1500's

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water.

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying . It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a thresh hold.

Getting quite an education, aren't you?

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer.

And that's the truth... Now, whoever said History was boring!

Paypal Email - Links to Phishing Scam Site

Another email today caught my attention that came from Paypal Billing department. I am a member of paypal, but haven't use it for my online transactions. First thought I knew this is scam since Paypal will not send notices to their members asking for debit/credit card information, and if ever it's already added/linked during the verification process in paypal account.

Further checking the email contents, it looks like a legitimate email since sender's email is paypal (service@paypal.com), but there is no recipient which is supposed to be my email (if personalized) or to a list (list email group).

Here's what the email is all about.

Due to recent fraudulent transactions, we have issued the following security requirements.

It has come to our attention that 98% of all fraudulent transactions are caused by members using stolen credit cards to purchase or sell non existant items. Thus we require our members to add a Debit/Check card to their billing records as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instance of fraud on our website. Your Debit/Check card will only be used to identify you. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew your records you will not run into any future problems with the PayPal® service. However, failure to confirm your records will result in your account suspension.

We are requesting this information to verify and protect your identity. Federal regulations require all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record identification from all persons opening new accounts or obtaining ongoing payment services. This is in order to prevent the use of the U.S. banking system in terrorist and other illegal activity. For these reasons, PayPal® will utilize services provided by various credit reporting agencies to verify the information you submit to us.

What made this email more obvious scam is the "clicking here" phrase that links to a website www.signlinkgraphics.co.uk. Clicking the said link directs to the phishing site where my browser identified it as a phishing site. I didn't open the link further for security reason. However I tried to open the website www.signlinkgraphics.co.uk and it looks like it's a legitimate website at all. It could be that a hacker successfully gained illegal access on the site and planted script to it.

Let's just be more alert in whatever suspicious emails we receive...

Another scam email that I received recently and it also uses a legitimate
company name in the UK. As usual it can be spotted as a scam since the sender's email (ST_VIDALES@tarleton.edu) is not the same to the company's email. At the last part of the email, another email address (craftfabricrep@gmail.com) is stated to send interest to the offer.

I tried to check with the company if the sender is their legitimate employee as a Recruiting Manager and got a response that the person is a scammer.

Everflux - Google's Indexing Dance?

I am in total surprise when I see my site isn't showing up in Google's search result. I immediately check my site's status in Webmaster's Tools and found that my site is still included in Google's Index and its bot crawler had recently visited my site. Crawl stats/graph is showing normal and sitemap is ok. The strange thing is that I tried to see if my site is showing up in: site, link, cache, info, and relative links but none of those my site is showing.

I don't want to think that my site is totally dropped or deleted in Google's Index since the site's status is still included and bot crawler is visiting my site everyday. Compared to my other test site, which Google has removed in its index it says that it's not included in the index sites.

Further search for an answer about this matter, I saw a more convincing explanation rather than thinking that my site was totally removed in Google's Index. The said "problem" I encountered is dubbed as the Google Dance or Everflux as what SEO experts say. According to several articles I've read, Google updates its entire index of websites once a month and can last for days and this usually happens on every last week of the month. Everflux or Google Dance as they call it, happens because Google in their ongoing effort to make their results as relevant as possible. Using "freshbot" on the other hand is the one that find sites that have either recently changed or are new. Freshbot is a secondary spider/crawler that adds its finding in a temporary database and is incorporated into the results returned from the primary database. The idea behind this is to update its index with pages that change regularly. In this way Google serves search results that are up-to-date.

I don't want to think yet that my site is totally out in Google's Index, not unless I see in my Webmaster's Tools Stats that my site is no longer included in Google's index. I'll wait for few days more or a week since I just noticed this "problem" just today.

Part 2 - Windows Hosts File, How You Can Use It?

Here's another helpful tip on how you can utilize the Windows Hosts File. Previously I discussed on how you can use it as a website url shortcut and as a url filter.

On this topic, we'll going to use the Hosts File as a local DNS in a PC if you are a web developer/programmer and you are running an IIS (Windows XP Pro) or Apache Web Server (Windows XP Home/Pro). Few years ago, whenever I test the html on my browser I usually open it in Internet Explorer in absolute path, and sometimes I use the Dreamweaver's Preview-in-browser.

Some web developers usually has a remote testing server where they usually develop the pages then upload the files in a testing server. Using the Hosts File as a local DNS is an added advantage to this kind of work specially if you are developing many websites for clients, you can:

1. Test locally the websites you are developing using a more descriptive name in Internet Explorer.

2. Easy, more convenient, and saves time rather than uploading the files in a test server.

3. Portable for site presentation of website development project. You can simply put the complete domain of the presented website in IE/Mozilla Firefox browser without requiring an Internet connection.

Now let's get things done for this purpose. If your Windows XP version is Professional, you can use IIS as your webserver. You may use Apache also in WinXP Pro and this is recommended in Win98/ME/2000 and XP Home Edition since IIS is not included in these versions of Windows. Edit the Windows Host File located at \Windows\ folder for Win98/ME and \Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ in Win2000 and XP. Make sure that you open it in notepad and enter the loopback IP and the corresponding name:

Then save and close the file. You may put a shortcut of the Hosts file in the desktop for easy editing if further entries are needed. Next enter the website names you have entered in the Hosts file in IIS or Apache virtual hosts setting. Make sure that you will enter them exactly the same name and it doesn't matter if either all capital letters or small letters. I presume you know already how to use IIS or Apache on this section...

Cloaked Malware

After reading a forum thread about another sexy star's "sex scandal", I was curious about the video being circulated via mobile phone and internet. I tried to search on Youtube and I found the subject with several results. Have tried to check on some video links but they were no longer available. But 1 video has another link to where to get the video. So I was able to download the "sex scandal" video, but it's in 3gp format. Then again I searched for a free 3gp player for the video and I found a free one (it's simply called 3gp Player). After installing the said player, it also required to download some codec for the player and I just let it run. I was then able to play and watch the short video clip. So there it was I am through in the video...

I went back to my previous work on the net and while in the middle of checking emails, a DOS program suddenly ran that it just pop-out and then exit. I ignored for the meantime maybe just another program update. Took a break on some internet work to watch a DVD movie - "Hitman". Then I noticed unusual with my notebook already, that my Windows Media Player kept resizing to normal window (though I maximized it). Looks like there is another program that keeps running in the background that affects my Media Player. I just didn't mind much about it that night and I began further checking my notebook the following day.

I have an antivirus running on my unit - Avast Free Edition. On access scanner always run and updates everyday once I am connected to the internet. I knew that there's something "not so friendly" program running in the background. My antivirus is not successfully detecting it. Since I don't want to download and try other programs again to detect and delete a suspected virus or malware, I tried to find and remove the suspected virus/malware manually.

First, check the processes that are running through Task Manager. Since I am nearly familiar with almost all the processes that are running in my unit, I started stopping those new to the list. And I found that is stubborn that keeps running after several seconds after it was stopped. Next I tried to search on the internet about that particular process "Je6rY8hj.exe" and I found the only result in the search engine. It's a cloaked malware program, which wasn't stated what it does. Since the result website has a trial program to detect malwares, I tried their program.

The next thing I did is to use that program to detect the location of the malware (though it cannot clean it since it's only a trial program).

After I have identified its location, I also searched the registry for its entries and found 3 entries. I deleted them manually in the registry and proceeded to delete the entry in C:\Windows\system32 folder. I also deleted the related dll files and another .exe file in the directory. Then I restarted windows and double-checked again the processes running and the stubborn malware is gone! I observed for sometime and I didn't noticed any other program running in the background. The very fast-running DOS window doesn't pop-put anymore.

Though there are a lot of programs out there that can detect and remove malware, I still prefer to run 1 antivirus in my unit. I am a cautious internet user, but sometimes I take the risk of being infected with viruses/malwares by openning/running websites/program (if I only needed it) specially crack program that I know has big threats of virus/malware infections.

For me, doing manual removal or repair on the system is another plus for knowledge. Never stop learning and consider it as a technical challenge!

Another 419 scam letter again... I noticed that since the first scam letter I received, those scammers always make use of some African countries as their location particularly Nigeria. Since 2000 after my first encouter with a scammer named "Mr. Zeng Zhang Lei", I became more curious why it's called "419 scam" for this type of scam? And here's why...

The 419 scam originated in the early 1980s as the oil-based Nigerian economy declined. Several unemployed university students first used this scam as a means of manipulating business visitors interested in shady deals in the Nigerian oil sector before targeting businessmen in the west, and later the wider population. Scammers in the early-to-mid 1990s targeted companies, sending scam messages via letter,[4] fax, or Telex.[5] The spread of email and easy access to email-harvesting software made the cost of sending scam letters through the Internet inexpensive. In the 2000s, the 419 scam has spurred imitations from other locations in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe, and, more recently, from North America, Western Europe (mainly UK), and Australia.

The number "419" refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code (part of Chapter 38: "Obtaining Property by false pretences; Cheating") dealing with fraud.[6] The American Dialect Society has traced the term "419 fraud" back to 1992.[7]

Simple Ways for a Healthy Brain

Have you ever felt not remembering someone's name or a place where you've parked you car and even an errand that you forgot to do? It is undeniable as we get older, sometimes our brain becomes less active. But it is also true that even we're in young age, sometimes we experience or notice that we are having some sort of memory problems. I don't deny but including me I noticed it to myself.

I am not a doctor nor health expert to discuss this matter, but I just wanted to share what I have read since I am looking also for some ways on how I can improve my brain performance. I am not talking here about becoming more intelligent :). Some of the following things listed are true cause of brain degredation, which based on my personal experience and insight I agree.

Here are some simple things we can do to tune up our brain:

Eat Almonds.
Almond is believed to improve memory as it contains brain boosting element called nutrientriboflavin as well as L-carnitine. Try to take almond oil and milk together before going to bed or after getting up at morning, it helps strengthens our memory power. Prepare the almond milk by crushing the almonds without the outer cover and adding water and sugar to it.

Drink Apple Juice.
Apple juice increases the production of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power as per research from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML).

Have Enough Sleep.
Research indicates that the long-term memory is consolidated during sleep by replaying the images of the experiences of the day. These repeated playbacks program the subconscious mind to store these images and other related information.

Enjoy Simple Pleasures.
Stress drains our brainpower. A stress-ridden mind consumes much of our memory resources to leave us with a feeble mind. Make a habit to engage yourself in few simple pleasures everyday to dissolve stress from your mind. Some of these simple pleasures are good for your mind, body and soul. Simply enjoy music we love, play with our children, take exercise, start a blog (yes blogging that's why I have one!), try yoga and other things that you find pleasure in doing like your other hobbies (good hobbies).

Exercise Your Mind.
Just as physical exercise is essential for a strong body, mental exercise is equally essential for a sharp and agile mind. Have you noticed that children have far superior brainpower than an adult does? Children have playful minds. A playful mind exhibits superior memory power. Engage in some of the activities that require your mind to remain active and playful. Try playing scrabble or crossword puzzle, interact with others, start a new hobby such as blogging, reading, painting, bird watching, practice meditation and yoga.

Reduce Sugar Intake.
Sugar is a non-food. It’s a form of carbohydrate that offers illusionary energy, only to cause a downhill slump once the initial burst has been worn off. Excess intake of sugar results in neurotic symptoms. Excess sugar is known to cause claustrophobia, memory loss and other neurotic disorders. Eat food without adding sugar. Stay away from sweet drinks or excess consumption of caffeine with sugar.

Eat Whole Wheat.
The whole wheat germs contain lecithin. Lecithin helps ease the problem of the hardening of the arteries, which often impairs brain functioning.

Eat A Light Meal At Night.
A heavy meal at night causes tossing and turning and a prolonged emotional stress while at sleep. It’s wise to eat heavy meal during the day when our body is in motion to consume the heavy in-take. Eating a light meal with some fruits allows us to sleep well. A good night sleep strengthens our brainpower.

Develop Imagination.
Greeks mastered the principle of imagination and association to memorize everything. This technique requires one to develop a vivid and colorful imagination that can be linked to a known object. If you involve all your senses - touching, feeling, smelling, hearing and seeing in the imagination process, you can remember greater details of the event.

Control Your Temper.
Bleached food, excess of starch or excess of white bread can lead to nerve grating effect. This results in a violent and some time depressive behavior. Eat fresh vegetables. Drink lots of water and meditate or practice yoga to relieve these toxic emotions of temper and stressful mood swings.

Take Vitamin B-complex.
Vitamin B-complex strengthens memory power. Eat food and vegetables high in Vitamin B-complex. Stay away from the starch food or white bread, which depletes the Vitamin B-complex necessary for a healthy mind.

Windows Hosts File, How You Can Use It?

Not all of Internet users are aware of how websites and DNS work. To reach a website, we simply enter the website name (example www.shopbotica.com) in the browser's address bar. In layman's thinking, computers will simply search for the website's server to reach and open the requested website. In order for the computer to successfully open the requested website, the website name has to be converted in numeric form that computers understand and that this is done on the Internet by special computers called name or DNS servers.

Did you know that the computer you are using (windows OS) has a special file called "HOSTS", which can act as a DNS server locally. The HOSTS file is located in \Windows\ folder for 9X/Me systems and in \Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ for Windows 2000/XP systems.

The HOSTS file is just a plain text with no file extension. You may also find another hosts file with .sam extension, meaning a host file sample. The default HOSTS file has these contents:

127.0.0.1 localhost

The entry 127.0.0.1 localhost is a loopback entry that defines local address and direct the computer to send packets to itself.

How you can use the HOSTS file?

1. Website Shortcut To Speed Up Browsing. By inserting the website's known IP address here in the HOSTS file, the computer's request to the DNS server is bypassed speeding up the request direct to the IP address of the website you want to open. For example, you can put here your favorite websites and their corresponding IP addresses. Like www.yahoo.com, we can simply put in here:

yahoo 209.131.36.158

and so on sites that you want. So in the browser's address, just enter yahoo (instead of www.yahoo.com) and it will directly open the Yahoo! website (www.yahoo.com).

Before you put in the HOSTS file the websites you want, you need to correctly identify the IP address of the website. You can do this by using the PING function or NSLOOKUP. You can run them in DOS prompt - START -> RUN -> CMD.

By the way, Web Accelerators are utilizing the HOSTS file. :)

2. Block Undesirable Websites. By using the HOSTS file, you can also put here the websites that you don't want like porn websites. You simply divert the request to the website by putting the loopback IP (127.0.0.1) to the corresponding website (example www.xxx.com). Or if not, you can divert it to another more friendly website. If you have a child at home who uses the PC, it's a good try to utilize the HOSTS file for this purpose rather than spending some bucks for commercial porno blocking software.

Not only that you block undesirable sites by using the HOSTS file. You can also use it to block known adware/malware sites where download of malware can occur.

And by the way, just in case you are experiencing some problems in your browser's default page like keeps redirecting to an ad search site, try checking your Windows HOSTS file for possible adware entry. Just delete the entries you find suspicious (compare to the default HOSTS file content) and leave just like the original HOSTS entry.

Another scam email that I received from a person named Mr.Zaohang Lin (info@zl.com). I received several emails similar to this one already. And I think this one is almost identical with the one I received way back 2002.

Dear Associate,

Thank you for giving me your time. Please be patient and read my email toyou. I am presently the manager of the Bank of China, Shenzhen branch. Prior tothis position, I was attached to Private Banking services. I am contactingyou concerning an investment placed under our banks management 4 yearsago; you are contacted independently out of investigation in the bank. Iwould like to intimate you with certain facts that I believe would be ofinterest to you.

In the year 1998, a certain Mr. Robert Rice came to our bank to engage inbusiness discussions with our Private Banking Services Department. Heinformed us that he had a financial portfolio of 30 million United Statesdollars, which he wished to have us invest on his behalf. I was the officer assigned to his case; I then proceeded to provide numerous suggestions and advise in line with my duties as the de-facto Chief Operations officer of the Private Banking Services Department, especially given the volume of funds he wished to put into our bank. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but gotno reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered fromhis contract employers, the Chinese Solid Minerals Corporation that hedied from an automobile accident. On further investigation, I found out that he died without making a WILL, and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless.

I therefore made further investigation and discovered that he did not declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This money is still sitting in my Bankand the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it. According to Laws ofRepublic of China, at the expiration of 6 (six) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Chinese Government if nobody applies toclaim the fund. What I wish to relate to you will smack of unethical practice but I want you to understand something. It is only an outsider tothe banking world who finds the internal politics of the banking world aberrational. The world of private banking especially is fraught with huge rewards for those who occupy certain offices and oversee certain portfolios. You should have begun by now to put together the general direction of what I am proposing. Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand in as the next of kin to the man so thatthe fruits of this old man's labor will not get into the hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like you to provide immediately your full names and address so that the attorney will prepare the necessary documents and affidavits that will put you in place as the next of kin.

We shall employ the services of an attorney for drafting and tarization of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration in your favor for the transfer. A bank account inany part of the world that you will provide will then facilitate the transfer of this money to you as the beneficiary/next of kin. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 50% for meand 50% for you. There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by the attorney and my position as the Branch Manager guarantees the successful execution of this transaction.
